The PhD in Geography is our department’s core doctoral program reflecting the multi-disciplinary research and teaching expertise of our exceptional and award-winning faculty. Graduate students engage in coursework from within and across three areas of focus: Urban and Regional Analysis, Earth and Environmental Systems, and Geographic Information Science. A broad range of elective courses build upon shared training in the theoretical and methodological foundations of Geography, advanced research approaches (quantitative and/or qualitative) and spatial technologies and analysis. Independent research follows yielding a dissertation that advances knowledge in Geography and its related disciplines.

Doctoral students in Geography at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte are members of a student-centered, well-resourced and collegial department comprised of social, physical and applied scientists. As many as half of our PhD students are supported through competitive Graduate Assistantships or Fellowships and our students are frequent recipients of the university’s most prestigious scholarships and national awards. Currently, the program’s Graduate Assistantships include a 9-month stipend of $21,000 plus tuition and health care support through a Graduate School GASP Award.

Our commitment to professional development translates into student involvement in faculty-led research and outreach teams; summer field work grants; financial support to present at national and international conferences; and preparation for teaching and research excellence both pre and post-graduation. Doctoral students in the program have established a tradition of engagement and leadership in the department, across campus, and within national and international professional associations such as the American Association of Geographers and its regional and specialty groups.

The program is structured to be completed within 4 years and our graduates find professional success across the occupational spectrum – as tenure-track professors, international researchers, community planners, analysts with local to national scale governments, post-doctoral fellows, applied scientists, spatial entrepreneurs, private sector consultants and more.

We are now accepting applications for Fall 2024 Admission. Applications received before February 15, 2024 will be given priority consideration for available assistantship and fellowship funding.

Please note that our program will continue to waive the GRE requirement for applicants seeking admission for Spring and Fall 2024. If applicants wish to submit GRE scores they may still do so and those will be considered in the review process.

2. UNC Graduate School reviews department recommendation and renders a final decision:

The UNC Graduate School reviews all admissions recommendations made by programs. Once final decisions have been made, the UNC Graduate School will send the applicant an email instructing them to login to their application portal to see the decision letter.

III. Costs and Funding

When estimating costs, please visit the UNC Cashier’s Office and use the Graduate and Professional Program Tuition and Fees link. Please note that the tuition and fees of graduate programs at Gillings vary from other graduate programs at UNC.

1. Applicants will be reviewed for eligibility for limited scholarships. Departments and concentrations will decide which applicants to nominate. No additional application is required.

3. Apply for FEDERAL financial aid by March 1 (please verify this date via FAFSA ). If you have been admitted and completed the FAFSA form by their deadline, the UNC Office of Scholarship and Student Aid will create a financial aid package for you.

School of Nursing

Phd program (now online).

The PhD in Nursing program is delivered in an online format, with both synchronous and asynchronous experiences. Students will be invited to campus 2-4 times per year for intensive interaction with School of Nursing faculty members. If students are unable to travel to campus, a synchronous online experience will be offered.

DNP to PhD Pathway

Do you have your Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree but now desire a research focused PhD degree? UNCG School of Nursing offers an individualized DNP to PhD Pathway where you can receive up to 12 credits towards your PhD. This means you will need only 39 credits ( 27 credits of coursework and 12 hours of dissertation work) for your PhD in Nursing. Want more information? The Clinical Health Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina Charlotte is accredited by the APA, and students receive intensive training in foundational clinical psychology skills and clinical health psychology-specific skills. Students are taught how to be both excellent practitioners and researchers. The program also strongly adheres to the Biopsychosocial Cultural and Social-Ecological models of health, such as using holistic techniques to provide innovative ways to understand mental and physical disease, risk, and health promotion.

How To Become A Practicing Psychologist In North Carolina

Becoming a licensed practitioner of psychology in the state of North Carolina takes commitment and determination for a prolonged period of time. In order to become licensed, you will have to interface with the North Carolina Psychology Board after completing all of your education requirements.

In order to consider becoming a licensed psychologist in North Carolina, you’ll have to achieve at least a bachelor’s degree and potentially a master’s degree in psychology, as well. Earning your bachelor’s degree will typically take up to four years of full-time coursework en route to completing roughly 120 total credit hours. After you complete your B.A. in psychology or a closely related field, you can move on toward your master’s.

Some institutions will roll their master’s degree into their doctoral program in order to facilitate a shortened process. In any event, most master’s degree programs will require roughly two years of full-time coursework to the tune of 45 total credit hours. In order to get into one of these master’s programs, you’ll have to pass a Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

After you have completed your master’s degree, you will move on to pursue your PsyD degree from a university that meets the American Psychological Association (APA) standards. Along the way, you’ll have to complete your thesis and dissertation will pursuing up to seven total years of education.

After meeting education requirements, you are ready to begin the licensing process.

• To begin the licensing process, you’ll first submit an application to the North Carolina Psychology Board. You will include much in the way of information while primarily focusing on your clinical training. You’ll also include three professional references before completing a supervision contract form. Both forms must be notified.
• Next, you’ll need to go to your local law enforcement agency in order to get your fingerprints taken. You’ll also complete an information release form so that the Board will be allowed to do a thorough background check.
• Finally, you’ll get your school transcripts ready, along with $138 in total fees, and have all of your documents shipped off to the Board for reference.
• After your application is reviewed, the North Carolina Psychology Board will request that you take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology . This test requires a $650 fee as well as a scaled score that meets or exceeds 500. After you pass this exam, you will move on to the North Carolina State Examination. You will pay a $200 fee while requiring at least a 78% score to pass the test.
• If you wish to achieve a permanent license in North Carolina, you’ll have to complete at least 3,000 hours of supervised work experience. Half of those hours must be completed after you receive your doctoral degree. Additionally, a quarter of these hours must be spent working directly with patients. A majority of these hours will have been acquired during your doctoral pursuit.
• If you meet all examination requirements as well as the other information outlined above, the Board will award you your license to practice in the state of North Carolina.

Executive Doctoral Program in Health Leadership Curriculum

The online Executive Doctoral Program in Health Leadership curriculum teaches students how to conduct and capitalize on practice-based research. During the first two years, you will complete online coursework that focuses on three content areas: leadership, public health and research. 

In the spring or summer of your second year, you will be asked to present and defend your dissertation proposal. At the end of the second year summer, you will take your written comprehensive exams. You will concentrate on your dissertation research in the third year.

• Population Perspectives for Health — Identify important population health problems, some of which may be appropriate as dissertation topics.
• Essentials of Practice-Based Research — Master fundamental quantitative and qualitative research skills, including formulating research questions, the pros and cons of different study designs, basic statistical techniques and sources of secondary data.
• Fundamentals of Research Analysis — Consider alternative research methodologies and analytical techniques for different research questions. Focus more heavily on qualitative research, and prepare your formal dissertation proposal.
• Health Policy Analysis and Advocacy for Leaders — Learn the policy analysis and policy making process. Identify strategies you may consider in your dissertation.

Admissions: Executive Doctoral Program in Health Leadership

The Gillings School of Global Public Health values a diversified cohort that represents a variety of perspectives and experience. The admissions committee evaluates each applicant holistically. GRE scores are not required. Note that meeting the minimum requirements does not ensure admission. 

Admissions Requirements: 

• A prior master’s or doctoral degree (not necessarily in public health)
• GPA of at least 3.0 in prior graduate study
• Full-time employment in the field
• At least five years of post-graduate experience in the health field, with significant management or leadership responsibilities at the mid- to senior-level

Deepen Your Knowledge With Key Leadership Skills

The online Executive Doctoral Program in Health leadership will prepare you for high-level leadership roles in health care, with 28 competencies related to management and government; data and analysis; policy and programs; and education and workplace development.

The Online Learning Experience

Students in this program study completely online. You will receive material (recorded videos, narrative case studies, datasets, readings, etc.) online each week, study these materials on your own time and complete tasks before the weekly, live sessions.  

You will, however, be expected to come to campus three times a year during the first two years, for a total of six on-campus visits during the program. One of the six on-site visits may be to an international site or to another location in the U.S. 

First-year students will attend classes on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time. Second-year students attend classes on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

The following courses are required in the major:

SIE 554A: Systems Engineering Process

This program covers the process and tools for systems engineering of large-scale, complex systems: requirements, performance measures, concept exploration, multi-criteria tradeoff studies, life cycle models, system modeling, etc. Graduate-level requirements include extensive sensitivity analysis of their final projects.

SIE 558: Model-based Systems Engineering

This course introduces model-based systems engineering (MBSE), the formalized application of modeling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification, and validation activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development and later life cycle phases. It emphasizes the practical use of the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and MBSE methods.

SIE 550: Theory of Linear Systems

This is an intensive study of continuous and discrete linear systems from the state-space viewpoint, including criteria for observability, controllability, and minimal realizations. It also optionally covers aspects of optimal control, state feedback, and observer theory.

SIE 531: Simulation Modeling and Analysis

Learn discrete event simulation, model development, statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments, variance reduction, random variate generation, Monte Carlo simulation. Graduate-level requirements include a library research report.

SIE 520: Stochastic Modeling I

In this course, you will focus on modeling stochastic processes from an applied viewpoint. Markov chains in discrete and continuous time, renewal theory, applications to engineering processes.

SIE 530: Engineering Statistics

Learn about the statistical methodology of estimation, testing hypotheses, goodness-of-fit, nonparametric methods, and decision theory related to engineering practice – with significant emphasis on the underlying statistical modeling and assumptions. Graduate-level requirements include additionally more difficult homework assignments.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The University of Houston offers a Master of Science in Nursing degree. Our face-to-face and web-enhanced classes are designed to work around your busy schedule, and you’ll receive a quality university education from excellent faculty at a great value.

The Master of Science in Nursing program (Education, Administration and FNP) is designed to build upon the BSN degree and is offered at the University of Houston at Katy and online. Students in this program are prepared to function at advanced levels with an expanded knowledge of theory, research and clinical application. Graduates are prepared to provide evidenced based health care and to work on collaborative teams. Lab and/or clinical course requirements will be in a face-to-face learning environment for practice and demonstration to meet course objectives and accreditation requirements. Each graduate will be able to function in an advanced practice role as a Nurse Administrator, Nurse Educator, or Family Nurse Practitioner. Nurses who have a master’s degree in nursing may be eligible for a Post Master’s Certificate as a nurse educator or nurse administrator.

MSN Administration

The Administration track prepares students to lead healthcare innovations by improving access, addressing quality and safety issues, and supervising the finance and operations of a health care organization.

MSN Education

Through the Education track, nurse educators prepare to apply educational theory and practice, develop courses and curriculum for nursing students and staff, and develop classroom and clinical strategies to prepare nurses to function in the health care environment.

Family Nurse Practitioner

The FNP track integrates both academic and community-based training to promote an evidence based approach to the care of individuals, families and the community. Hybrid graduate tracks offer face-to-face classes one day a week for maximum scheduling flexibility for students, while offering the essential benefit of role-modeling and networking with leaders in the profession.

Post Master's Certificates

Post Master’s certificate candidates are required to achieve a grade of B or higher in all post MSN certificate courses to be eligible to earn the certificate.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The new Post Master’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program (Administration, Family Nurse Practitioner) is designed to build upon the MSN degree and is offered at the University of Houston Main campus and online. The Doctor of Nursing Practice is an evidence-based-practice-focused program and students who complete this program will demonstrate the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice. Nurses who have a Doctor of Nursing Practice have completed the highest level of education in nursing practice.
