Ph.D. Programs Dual Degree Programs

Economics (MA)

Program description, dual degrees.

The Master of Arts program is designed to accommodate both full-time and part-time students. It requires a minimum of three semesters of full-time study. The time limit for completion of the degree is five years for both full- and part-time students.

Admission to the Master of Arts program in economics is limited to students of outstanding promise. First and foremost, we aim to admit students with excellent training in economics and quantitative methods—that is, students with grades of A-, A or A+ in economics and mathematics courses at undergraduate level. More specifically, strong applicants will meet the following requirements: GRE Quantitative Reasoning score > 80th percentile (≈ 159 on new scale); GRE Analytical Writing score > 80th percentile (≈ 5.0); GRE Verbal Reasoning score > 50th percentile (≈150), two undergraduate calculus courses (or one calculus & one linear algebra course), one statistics course & one course in econometrics, intermediate microeconomics and intermediate macroeconomics, plus four other undergraduate economics courses, overall GPA of 3.5 and above at the undergraduate level, and TOEFL > 105 (internet-based version) (TOEFL requirement is for international students only). A strong application will have ‘A’ grades in most of these courses (i.e. undergraduate economics, calculus, statistics & econometrics). Please note that we only accept GRE scores. The GRE general test is required for all applicants. No exceptions are granted. GMAT will not be accepted in place of the general GRE. We evaluate applications on their general merits. What is important is the total picture of an applicant’s competence, not performance on an individual criterion.

All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit the  general application requirements , which include:

  • Academic Transcripts
  • Test Scores  (if required)
  • Applicant Statements
  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
  • Letters of Recommendation , and
  • A non-refundable  application fee .

See Economics for admission requirements and instructions specific to this program.

The Economics Department offers two dual degrees with the NYU School of Law:

  • Economics (MA)/Law (JD)
  • Economics (PhD)/Law (JD)

See Economics for additional information and admission requirements specific to these programs.

Program Requirements

Formal requirements for the Master of Arts degree in economics are the satisfactory completion of graduate studies totaling at least 32 credits and the writing of a special project report. In order to graduate, students must complete at least 24 credits within the Department of Economics at New York University (i.e., courses with an ECON-GA prefix). Transfer credits do not count toward this requirement. Most courses carry 3 credits; the special project carries 2 credits. Students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 with 18 credits of B or better. Students may take 8 credits outside the Department of Economics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will have achieved the following skills and abilities:

  • Skills in advanced economics, particularly mainstream macroeconomics and microeconomics. Students should acquire the analytical toolkit used in contemporary microeconomics and macroeconomics. Students should acquire knowledge of the main questions addressed in modern macroeconomics and microeconomics and how they relate to contemporary markets and economic systems. They should obtain knowledge of the determinants of the main macroeconomic aggregates, such as output, consumption, unemployment, wages, inflation and the interest rate.
  • Skills in econometrics and statistics for quantitative research and analysis. They should acquire working knowledge of various topics in statistics that are needed to understand econometric theory, including random variables, mathematical expectations, estimation and inference. They should obtain a good grasp of the simple regression model, multivariable regression analysis, hypothesis testing, specification analysis and the generalized regression model (including random effects models), instrumental variable models, simultaneous equation models, some topics in macroeconometrics and microeconometrics. In addition, student should acquire knowledge of methodological issues related to generalized method of moments and maximum likelihood estimation. They should also obtain preliminary knowledge of the techniques of machine learning and their application in economics.
  • Skills in mathematical techniques. Students should acquire knowledge of appropriate mathematical methods that relate to various types of economic analysis. They should acquire working knowledge of the concept of sets, set operations, functions, matrix algebra, partial differentiation, techniques for unconstrained optimization. They should be able to apply these techniques in economic equilibrium analysis.

Checking Your Grades

As a student at New York University, your class grades and grade point average make up a large part of your academic record and are determined according to university grading policies.

You can check your final grades on NYU Albert each term you’re enrolled after your instructor submits them to our office.

To view your grades:

  • Go to the Grades and Transcripts section in NYU Albert
  • Generate an unofficial transcript to see your grades and your cumulative GPA

Official transcripts must be requested from the Office of the Registrar.

Grade Point Average

Your grade point average or GPA is a weighted average that measures scholastic achievement on a scale from 4.000, an A, to 0.000, an F.

Your GPA is created by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of credit hours earned.

  • Learn more about how your GPA is calculated

Your GPA contains three decimal points rather than one because of a University Senate resolution issued in March 2018.

The new system resolves inconsistencies between quality points and grade point averages, since the latter are represented on your NYU transcript using three decimal points.

Please note: A specific grade may not be valid in a particular school or division.

Grading Policies

All final grades are due to the Office of the Registrar 72 hours after the scheduled final exam date.

If you receive an incomplete (I) grade in a course, it will lapse to a failing (F) grade based on the lapsing rule of the school you took the course through.

Blank and No Record (NR) Grades

You may receive a blank grade if your instructor or authorized school administrator does not enter your course grade within 30 days from the grade due deadline. If this happens you will see a No Record or NR on your transcript.

NR grades can be changed by instructors or authorized administrators using the standard grade change process in NYU Albert at a later date.

If you receive an NR grade:

  • Your course will not count toward earned credit or factor into your GPA.
  • Your course will count as credits attempted and impact academic progress evaluations used for financial aid eligibility.
  • You cannot graduate with an NR grade on your record without a formal documented exception approved by the academic Dean.

NYU Requirements for Admission

Choose your test.

What are NYU's admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

  • GPA requirements
  • Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
  • Application requirements

In this guide we'll cover what you need to get into NYU and build a strong application.

School location: New York, NY

This school is also known as: New York University

Admissions Rate: 12.5%

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at NYU is 12.5% . For every 100 applicants, only 13 are admitted.

image description

This means the school is extremely selective . Meeting their GPA requirements and SAT/ACT requirements is very important to getting past their first round of filters and proving your academic preparation. If you don't meet their expectations, your chance of getting in is nearly zero.

After crossing this hurdle, you'll need to impress NYU application readers through their other application requirements, including extracurriculars, essays, and letters of recommendation. We'll cover more below.

NYU GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.8

The average GPA at NYU is 3.8 .

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.8, NYU requires you to be near the top of your class , and well above average. Your transcript should show mostly A's. Ideally, you will also have taken several AP or IB classes to show that you can handle academics at a college level.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.8, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

NYU hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to NYU will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

NYU SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1455

The average SAT score composite at NYU is a 1455 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes NYU Strongly Competitive for SAT test scores.

image description

NYU SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1470, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1560. In other words, a 1470 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1560 will move you up to above average .

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

NYU has the Score Choice policy of "Contact School."

This means that the school wants you to contact them to learn more about their Score Choice policies. Keep reading - we may have extra notes about this from our own expert research.

NYU ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, NYU likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 34

The average ACT score at NYU is 34. This score makes NYU Extremely Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 33, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 35.

Even though NYU likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 33 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 34 and above that a 33 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 35 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

However, from our research, NYU is understood to superscore the ACT . We couldn't confirm it directly from the school's admissions website, but multiple sources confirm that the school does superscore the ACT. We recommend you call their admissions office directly for more information.

Superscoring is powerful to your testing strategy, and you need to make sure you plan your testing accordingly. Of all the scores that NYU receives, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all ACT test dates you submit .

Click below to learn more about how superscoring critically affects your test strategy.

For example, say you submit the following 4 test scores:

English Math Reading Science Composite
Test 1 16 16 16 20
Test 2 16 16 16 20
Test 3 16 16 16 20
Test 4 16 16 16 20

Even though the highest ACT composite you scored on any one test date was 20, NYU will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 20 to 32 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and NYU forms your Superscore, you can take the ACT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your ACT score is currently below a 35, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the ACT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the ACT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

NYU considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is extremely selective, getting a high SAT/ACT score and GPA is vital to having a chance at getting in . If you don't pass their SAT/ACT and GPA requirements, they'll likely reject you without much consideration.

To have the best shot of getting in, you should aim for the 75th percentile, with a 1560 SAT or a 35 ACT . You should also have a 3.8 GPA or higher. If your GPA is lower than this, you need to compensate with a higher SAT/ACT score.

For a school as selective as NYU, you'll also need to impress them with the rest of your application. We'll cover those details next.

But if you apply with a score below a 1560 SAT or a 35 ACT, you unfortunately start out with the odds against you and have a tiny chance of getting in. There are just too many students with high SAT/ACT scores and strong applications, and you need to compete against them.

CS GPA Calculator

Information on NYU Grading is available from the Registrar's Office .

The Grade point average (GPA) can be obtained by determining the total of all grade points earned (quality points) and dividing that figure by the total number of credit hours completed (quality hours). For example: a student who has completed 8 points of A (4.0), 4 points of B (3.0), and 4 points of C (2.0) has a grade point average of 3.25. This is obtained by adding 8 (points of A) x 4.0 (point value of A), 4 (points of B) x 3.0 (point value of B), and 4 (points of C) x 2.0 (point value of C), which totals 52 (the total of all grade points earned), and then by dividing 52 by 16 (the total number of credit hour completed). This gives the grade point average of 3.25.

A student's semester GPA is the weighted mean value of all grade points he/she earned in a semester. A student's cumulative GPA is the weighted mean value of all grade points that have been taken at NYU so far.

Enter both grade (A, A-, B+, etc.) and credits (1,2,3, etc.) in the calculator below.

Prepare Your Application

  • Get teacher recs that speak to your character. If you know what you’re majoring in and include that in your New York University (NYU) app, try to have at least 1 recommendation from a teacher in that department.
  • Apply Before the Deadline. Too many students wait until the last minute to submit their application, and too much can go wrong during this precious time window. Since many students are applying on the last day, it’s possible that New York University (NYU)’s own system crashes. Don’t risk the added stress this can cause - submit your app a few days early.

What's Daniel Larsen GPA?

Economist Meade

who cares about GPAs? It's all about connections and luck in this game. Don't forget, a high schooler has a better publication history than you.

Who has ever succeeded in math through ''luck''?

Economist Myrdal

who cares about gpa? pursuit of interests is key!

He is clearly the sort of person who deeply pursues what interests him.

Economist Fahrenheit

why GPA 5.0 not good like GPA 4.0?

why does MIT do 5.0 scale? God intended there to be only 4 points.

Economist Aumann

Given some (or maybe one) people here repeatedly moan about nepobabies, it's no wonder that Larsen would be the target (sooner or later). If he fail he's a loser (like Kriz or Mocz), but if he's successful it's because of his parents and uncle ljl.

He's already successful in that he solved an interesting problem, published his work in a top 5 journal (while in high school) and had this covered by Quanta.

His sister is more of a justified target for nepobaby as she did a Harvard math degree summa cum laude, but without the indicators of ability like Daniel, and is now at MIT for a PhD in the same area of specialization as her parents. She could be high ability, or she could be a nepobaby of mediocre abilities carefully nurturing her resume. Time will tell.

solved an interesting problem, published his work in a top 5 journal (while in high school)
Checking this, Wikipedia says it was IMRN. At the time of his result the news was that it was going in Acta. Not sure what happened.

Economist Hart

Huh? Where do you got that it was going to Acta math? IIRC it's not going to Acta math, but to Acta combinatorica
