Nina Kankunda famously known as “Nina Roz” is a Ugandan Singer and song writer born in Kampala. She is likened to American Model Amber Rose. The tall and beautiful singer kick started off her career in Team no sleep record label earlier this year but left due irreconcilable differences to start up her own record label, Nina Roz. Nina attended St Stephens COU primary school, Kakungulu before moving to Trinity College Mityana. However she took a break from the University of East Africa where she was pursuing Business Administration to concentrate on music. Her unique voice, performing skills, sense of fashion fascinates whoever listens to her. The song ‘Mekete’ in which she features fellow Ugandan artist Roden Y is the most successful of her releases.

Nina Roz was born in the capital of kampala in kibuli mutajazi to a business woman, Lucy Mbabazi and Hajji Gitta Salongo, Nina was born one, though she has other siblings in a household that was filled with music from day one. She has dual heritage of western Uganda and Rwandese blood. Her father comes from Rwanda and she is also a Rwandan by default. She is the only child in her mother and father but with step-siblings with both sides of the parents.

Nina attended St. Steven’s Church of Uganda which is based in Entebbe Kisuggu [3] . After her primary level, she joined Kakungulu Memorial she later changed and joined Kibuli SS which is also a Muslim school and she finished her secondary level at Mitiyana Trinity College. She later joined the East African University where she was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration but never got a chance to finish because of financial issues. Nina Roz stepfather Hajji Gita Sulaiman was the pillar of the family and was the person paying Nina Roz’s tuition fee but he fell sick when Nina had just joined campus and could no longer pay for her which made Nina drop out of campus and join the music industry. During her life in school, Nina Roz says she connected more with boys more than girls and she referred to herself as a tomboy. [4]

Nina Roz started commercial modelling during her vacation in S6 and joined the music industry in 2016. Nina’s height of over 6ft was unique which attracted most of the modelling companies to use her in their projects. She released her successful song, Omuliro. When she joined the industry in 2016 the lovely singer was a friend of Jeff Kiwa, the label owner of the Uganda talent management company called Team No Sleep (TNS), and before she began her solo career, Jeff helped her record her first single. In recent times, Nina Rose changed management to Black Market Records from Sure Entertainment where she is also managed by Daddy Andre along with Bruno K and Angella Katatumba .

In September 2016 Jeff Kiwa took her to producer Shidy Beats who produced her first single titled Oli Mekete which was a collaboration between her and Roden Y Kabako. After the release of the song a video producer called Grate Make gave her an offer to shoot her first video and in October 2016 the video was released [5] [6] .

Nina Roz introduced to her parents, singer and producer Andrew Ojambo alias, Daddy Andre. Recently, the Mekete singer denied rumours of dating Daddy Andre but they couldn’t mask it when the introduction took place [7]

Nina Roz – Education and Background 

Nina Kankunda famously known as Nina Roz was born in July 1993  to a family of Mr Matia Nsemeirwe Martin and Proscovia Tumukunde in Mbarara but was raised in Kampala. 

According to  Nina Roz, the name Kakunda comes from her mother’s side  which makes most of the people to think that she comes from western Uganda but Nina says her father comes from Rwanda and she is also a Rwandan by default. Kankunda is the only child in her mother and father but with step-siblings with both sides of the parents. 

In her early days of school, the beautiful tall talented diva attended a school called St. Steven’s Church of Uganda which is based in Entebbe Kisuggu. Nina Roz – Fashion career

In her s.6 vacation, Nina Kakunda alias  Nina Roz joined the modelling industry . Nina’s height of over 6ft was unique which attracted most of the modelling companies to use her in their projects.

Music career 

In her secondary level (s.4 and s.6) Nina Roz connected with a ragga female dancehall artiste known as Empress who was the best at the time and became a backup artiste of Empress in most of her gigs and beach bashes were she could perform.

After dropping out of campus Kakunda joined the groups of girls that were slaying and partying in Kampala’s best clubs at the time and she got a chance to link up with friends who were influential in the music industry.  

One Saturday morning Nina was invited by her friend Davido to attend a boat cruise and on this boat cruise Nina Roz connected with a lady who a had the most trending hit in a town known as Ice cream and according to Nina, her life changed the day she  met Sheebah Karungi . 

Nina says she meant Sheeba when she was going through a lot of depression and frustrations but Sheeba helped her to overcome.  

Nina later flew to South Africa to get a job and in this period she spent looking for a job she realized that the only thing she could do was music. 

After one month Nina returned to Uganda and went back to Team No sleep and told  Sheeba’s manager Jeff Kiwa  that she wanted to sing.  Jeff Kiwa took her  to the studio to record her first demo to see if she had the potential of singing.

Nina says the demo was a success although it wasn’t released because of unclear reasons. In September 2016 Jeff Kiwa took her to producer Shidy Beats who produced her  first single titled Oli Mekete  which was a collaboration between her and Roden Y Kabako.

After the release of the song a video producer called Grate Make gave her an offer to shoot her first video and in October 2016 the video was released. 

Jeff Kiwa told Nina Roz  that he was unable to manage her but advised her to get a sponsor, not a manager and according to Nina, this was a blessing because Jeff had shown her how the music industry runs and those who matter in the industry.

In 2017  Nina Roz was signed to Boom bark records  and early that year she linked up with Daddy Andre who produced her second club banger titled Omuliro which was an Afro-DanDancehall song. Later in 2018, she released another single titled Olumya Banno which was produced by Nessim pan production and in 2019 she released Anayinama a dancehall song.

In 2020  Nina Roz left Boom bark records  and joined the management of Sure Events where she has released two latest singles titled Ntinka nkutike and Ekyoyoyo and they were produced by Diggy Baur and Daddy Andre respectively.

Kakunda is known for her soft sweet silky voice and her videos which are characterized with creativity and the latest fashion trends which makes them unique.

Controversies

When  Nina Roz and Sheeba Kalungi became close friends  news started making round that these two were dating each other and it was said Nina Roz was the girlfriend while Sheeba acted as the boyfriend. Nina Roz came out to refute the claims and she says Sheeba was just a close friend who helped her to overcome the depression she was going through.

After deciding on joining the industry and started singing these two long time friends stopped Seeing Eye to eye and Nina says she didn’t do anything to Sheeba but Sheeba just decided to end their friendship. Nina also adds that she didn’t receive any support from her friend like how she had expected before joining the industry.

Close friends to Sheeba say she didn’t like the whole idea of Nina joining industry since she was sounding like she and Nina were starting to be close to Jeff Kiwa which Sheeba didn’t like.

Nina Roz has been accused of being a drug addict  and the drugs have started affected her music career but Nina has claimed that these reports are wrong and irrelevant.

It’s also alleged that Nina Roz and a Ugandan dancehall artist known  as Beenie Gunter  were dating but both have said these reports aren’t true.

Loved ones searching for 25-year-old Nina Rose missing since April 29, 2022, in Inglewood, California

Update: On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, Nina Rose was located in Venice Beach, California by her sister Brittney, after she learned Nina's debit card had been used there. It is unclear at this time what happened to Nina. "Right now, we're just more concerned with loving on her and helping her heal," Brittney told Dateline in a text in which she also expressed gratitude to the many strangers who offered support in the search for her sister.

It has been almost two weeks since 25-year-old Nina Rose was last seen in Inglewood, California. Brittney Rose, one of Nina’s sisters, told Dateline that the entire family is extremely worried about Nina’s well-being. “She’s the baby -- the baby of the family,” she said.

The Rose family grew up in the West Los Angeles area. They spent their time hanging out together and going to the beach. “The beach has always been our peaceful place,” Brittney said.

Brittney says that Nina was always very studious. “She's still the most intelligent girl I know. I mean, straight-A student. She was in the newspaper in Lancaster for having the highest GPA,” Brittney told Dateline. “She was the one that, you know, everyone's like, ‘Yeah, she's -- she's gonna be the rich one in the family.’”

Nina’s cousin Christina Jaus told Dateline that she used to babysit Nina and her siblings. “I'm a little bit older than them,” Christina said, adding that she often felt more like an aunt than a cousin. She said that growing up, Nina was “very sweet, very bright. You know, just one of those happy, playful kids.”

Christina lives in New York and told Dateline that the past few weeks have been extremely difficult since hearing that Nina was missing on the other side of the country. “It's painful because, you know, I've always felt a sense of responsibility for them,” she said. “I'm always wanting to take care of them. And so not being there has been -- has been hard.”

Christina looked back fondly at the time Nina moved to the East Coast and lived with her for a little bit. “She lived with me for probably about three or four months,” Christina said. “She did well while she was here, but I think the distance just became too much. And so then she ended up moving back to California.”

Brittney told Dateline that her little sister got a partial scholarship to UC Santa Barbara where she started out studying psychology. Nina had been attending the university for a few years when Brittney recalled something shifted.

“I don’t know if something happened on campus. We believe something might have happened,” Brittney said, and Nina “kinda hasn’t been the same since.”

Nina took some time off from college, but Brittney told Dateline that her sister was determined to finish her degree. “Her passion was really trying to finish school,” Brittney said. “She actually did go back to finish,” Brittney noted. “She took about a year or two off and she went back at the beginning of the year.” That was in January of 2022.

Unfortunately, Brittney said, Nina got into a car accident not long after returning to the university. “She was injured from the car accident,” Brittney told Dateline. But luckily, it wasn’t anything too serious. “Just, like, bruises and bumps and stuff like that,” she said.

Nina’s car was not as lucky. “Her car was totaled in that accident,” Brittney said, so her sister would have been getting around on foot.

Nina had been putting herself through school, while working as a caregiver, at a retail job and being a DoorDash driver to support herself.

After the accident, Brittney told Dateline that Nina was struggling and needed to try and get back on her feet. “She came back to LA to try to settle down again and take some more time off work,” Brittney said. “I was trying to convince her to come up to Riverside and live with me, but, you know, she's one of those, ‘I want to do it on my own’ type.”

Nina checked herself into the Adventurer Hotel on Century Boulevard, near family in Inglewood, California. Despite being close to family, Brittney told Dateline that Nina didn’t like asking for help and wanted to try to make it on her own.

Brittney last spoke with Nina on April 26, 2022, and thought that she seemed a little stressed out. “I know that she was kind of running out of money and I was trying to convince her to come up here and live with me and she was being -- she was being stubborn, still on wanting to do things on her own,” Brittney said.

“The 27th is when the hotel said she checked out. The 28th is the last time her phone was active at 4:00 p.m.,” Brittney said.

“I found out that her phone was off that Friday night,” Brittney said. That was April 29. “We were a little concerned. But we were, like, you know, ‘Maybe she didn't charge her phone.’”

The family waited a few days, hoping Nina would get in contact. “Saturday and Sunday passed and no one still had heard from her,” Brittney said. “I called Monday morning and filed a missing persons report.”

That was May 2. “I drove down there that day and we walked around with her picture asking multiple people,” Brittney said. “There were about three or four people that said that they’d seen her.”

Brittney told Dateline that those witnesses all told her basically the same thing: They remembered seeing Nina three days earlier, which would have been Friday the 29th, in the area surrounding the hotel in Inglewood. They said Nina was on foot and had some bags with her.

Brittney said that the reason Nina was staying at that specific hotel was because they had weekly rates. “It's not the Hilton,” Brittney said. “I know that it's not that great of an area where she went missing from.”

Brittney told Dateline that since April 29, calls to Nina’s phone have been going straight to voicemail and texts are not going through. “She hasn’t used her debit card since the 27th, so her bank account has had no activity on it,” she added.

Brittney said that over this past weekend, a detective from the Inglewood Police Department was finally assigned to Nina’s case. Dateline contacted the Inglewood Police Department and spoke with Lieutenant Geoffrey Meeks and Lieutenant Scott Collins from the Press Information Office. They provided a press release which confirms that Nina was last in contact with family on April 28 and was reported missing on May 2. The release states that Nina is an at-risk missing person. In an email, Lt. Meeks wrote, “In addition to the information presented within this Press Release, this case is currently under active investigation by Detective Jon Thompson of the Inglewood Police Departments Missing Person’s Unit.”

Brittney told Dateline that once a detective was assigned to the case, she was “just grateful that they actually assigned somebody,” but she expressed frustration that valuable time may have been lost in the search for her sister, and concern that security footage from the time Nina was last seen might no longer be available.

Christina told Dateline she felt the same frustration as her cousin Brittney. “I think for me the biggest -- the biggest issue is, you know, not having the police move on it quickly,” she said. “The longer it goes on, the less likely you are to be able to identify or find information.”

Brittney feels like there has been very little assistance when it comes to actually searching for Nina. “It was just me and my sister and a couple of my friends, and then my uncle went out,” she said.

They created flyers to help spread the word about Nina’s disappearance. “We taped them up all around the area. There were businesses that allowed us to tape them up. We went to Hollywood and taped them up from Sunset to La Brea, and all down the Walk of Fame on Wednesday,” Brittney told Dateline.

All the way across the country, Christina told Dateline that she is at a loss for what to do. “It’s one of the things that, as a woman, you're fearful of, but it's just, I don't know,” she said. “It's like -- I feel useless.” But she does what she can, “trying to use Twitter and -- and trying to spread the word,” she said. “And trying to be as emotionally and psychologically available to [Nina’s sisters] on the phone and calling and checking. And, you know, writing whatever -- whoever I need to, because as painful as it is for me, I know this is their sister, you know?”

Nina said that despite dealing with mental health issues previously, Brittney would never have gone this long without communicating with her family. “If anything, it might have been like a day or two that we didn't hear from her,” Brittney said.

Her cousin, Christina, agrees. “Even in the moments that have been down, she has always stayed in communication,” Christina told Dateline. “She has always, you know, like been very clear about, like, ‘I'm just not feeling emotionally up to it right now.’ Like, ‘I just need a minute to myself.’ But it's always been in communication, and there's never been like anything like this, you know?”

Brittney doesn’t believe Nina was seeing anyone new at the time of her disappearance, but she told Dateline that “Nina is very trusting, very soft-spoken.” She believes that if her sister was feeling stressed or dealing with mental health issues, “she might have trusted the wrong person.”

Nina is 5’4” and weighs approximately 120 lbs. She has a tattoo of a phoenix and a crescent moon on her forearm, and a flower near her ear. She has brown eyes and curly brown hair, that she will sometimes straighten. Nina has a caramel complexion and, according to Brittney, “has a pretty smile. She has deep dimples.”

Ultimately, Brittney just wants her baby sister home and asks that everyone keep an eye out for Nina. “You know, the more eyes, the more possibilities that we can find her.”

Dr. Nina Rose Fischer (she/her) is a tenured Associate Professor at City University of New York John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Interdisciplinary Studies and the Graduate Center Social Welfare Phd program. She is a leader in developing social justice oriented pedagogy, policies and research design. She innovates praxis-based experiential learning courses about social justice to co-create solutions for institutionalized oppression. She directed the prestigious Vera Fellows Program and was a Social Justice Teaching Fellow. Dr. Fischer has 30 years of experience in harm reduction and youth justice as an organizer, therapist, creative, administrator, program developer, policy maker and researcher. She is currently Principal Investigator for three original research projects 1) youth and police relations; 2) substance use harm reduction with teens; and 3) arrest diversion for youth with gun charges. She was recently invited by the United Nations in Vienna to present her harm reduction research. She published a book called The Case for Youth Police Initiative: Interdependent Fates and the Power of Peace an ethnographic exploration of youth/police relations; and recommendations for how law enforcement can benefit from social welfare infrastructure. She has also published in both peer reviewed journals and popular periodicals. She is Executive Producer of an in progress documentary series based on her book. Critical race, class and gender analyses are central to Dr. Fischer’s work.

The Case for Youth Police Initiative: Interdependent Fates and the Power of Peace offers first-person narratives from youth, police, and community members. Police shootings and other negative exchanges between community members and the police have brought heightened awareness to the volatile relations between and police and the communities they serve. The Youth Police Initiative (YPI) was founded in Baltimore in 2003 to prevent young people from being arrested and incarcerated, and from gun violence and fatalities- through training police officers to humanize in their encounters instead of arresting, harassing and brutalizing young people. The training has been replicated in over 40 cities in the United States, Belize and Bermuda. Youth with the most police contact learn to resolve conflicts safely while they teach police officers, some with a track record of citizen complaints, to treat young people with understanding and respect.

The voices of the participants reveal surprising changes in attitudes and actions from before to after YPI’s implementation. YPI’s success in addressing tensions between youth and police maps out a blueprint for progress across the US and globally.

Suitable for scholars and researchers in sociology, psychology,  and social welfare, as well as practitioners on the front lines, The Case for Youth Police Initiative provokes dialogue on best practices to actually change the volatile climate between police and the young people in their communities.

Nina Rose conducted the first evaluation of a cutting edge harm reduction substance use curriculum for teens that includes the effects of race and class on drug policy called Safety First Real Drug Education for Teens developed by the Drug Policy Alliance with over 800 high school freshmen. Her research earned her the Dr. Andrew Weil Award for Research in Drug Education. She published an article based on her findings called "School-based harm reduction with adolescents: a pilot study" in Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy (2022) 17:79  https://doi.org/10.1186/s13011-022-00502-1.

Nina Simone (born February 21, 1933, Tryon, North Carolina , U.S.—died April 21, 2003, Carry-le-Rouet, France) was an American singer who created urgent emotional intensity by singing songs of love, protest, and Black empowerment in a dramatic style, with a rough-edged voice.

A precocious child, Simone played piano and organ in girlhood. She became sensitive to racism when at age 12 she gave a piano recital in a library where her parents had to stand in back because they were Black. A student of classical music at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City , she began performing as a pianist. Her vocal career began in 1954 in an Atlantic City , New Jersey , nightclub when the club owner threatened to fire her unless she sang too. Her first album featured her distinctive versions of jazz and cabaret standards, including “I Loves You, Porgy,” which became a 1959 hit.

In the 1960s Simone added protest songs, became a friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. , and Malcolm X , and performed at civil rights demonstrations. Her 1964 song “ Mississippi Goddam” exemplifies this period. Her popularity grew as she added folk and gospel selections as well as songs by the Bee Gees , Bob Dylan , and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (“I Put a Spell on You”) to her repertoire . Angered by American racism, she left the United States in 1973 and lived in Barbados , Africa, and Europe for the rest of her life.

Like her private life, her career was turbulent, and she gained a reputation for throwing onstage tantrums, insulting inattentive audiences, and abruptly canceling concerts. A 1980s Chanel television commercial that included her vocal “My Baby Just Cares for Me” helped introduce her to many new, younger listeners. A similar rebirth occurred in the 21st century when her 1965 recording of “Sinnerman” was remixed as an electronic dance music standard. Despite ill health, she continued to tour and perform, and she maintained a devoted international following until her death in 2003.

The Real-Life Inspiration for Rose From Titanic

James Cameron had this amazing artist in mind when he created Kate Winslet's iconic character.

Kate Winslet portrayed protagonist Rose DeWitt Bukater, the love interest of DiCaprio’s character. A young heiress and socialite forced into a loveless engagement with a wealthy man (played by Billy Zane), Rose becomes enamored with Jack, a poor, free-spirited artist who made his way onto the doomed vessel.

Even a quarter-century after the film’s release, one of the most common questions among views of Titanic remains: Was Rose based upon a real person? The answer, according to Cameron, is yes … and no.

There was no Rose DeWitt Bukater aboard the actual Titanic , nor was she based upon any specific passenger of the ill-fated ship. But the character was partially inspired by Beatrice Wood, an avant-garde artist and studio potter who captured Cameron’s imagination and directly inspired elements of the older version of Rose’s character, played by Gloria Stuart.

“Beatrice was proof that the attributes of Rose’s character that I thought might have been perceived as far-fetched were not,” Cameron wrote in Titanic: James Cameron's Illustrated Screenplay .

The Real-Life Rose

While Cameron was developing the film that would become Titanic , actor Bill Paxton ’s wife, Louise Newbury, lent him a copy of I Shock Myself , Wood’s autobiography. (Paxton, a regular collaborator with Cameron, had a supporting role in Titanic .) Cameron immediately saw similarities between Wood and the protagonist he imagined for Titanic .

“The first chapter describes almost literally the character I was already writing for Old Rose,” Cameron wrote in the Illustrated Screenplay . However, Cameron noted that Wood is “only a refraction of Beatrice, combined with many fictional elements,” including memories of his own two grandmothers, one of whom was named Rose.

I Shock Myself: Beatrice Wood, Career Woman of Art

Wood, born in 1893, was educated in Paris and New York, and ran away from a wealthy, domineering mother at age 17 to became an artist and ceramicist, according to the Illustrated Screenplay . Rose has a similar life story in Titanic , fleeing from her mother’s machinations for an arranged marriage in favor of a life on her own terms as an artist.

“I left home, a luxurious home, with $15, to be free,” Wood said . “And I went through a few years understanding the word poverty. But I was free. And freedom means a great deal to me.”

Wood became romantically involved with cubist painter Marcel Duchamp, founding and editing Dadist magazines with Duchamp and writer Henri-Pierre Roché. Wood partially inspired Roché to write the novel Jules et Jim (1953), about a love triangle between three Bohemians, which was adapted into the French New Wave film Jules and Jim (1962) by François Truffaut.

“Charming, Creative, and Devastatingly Funny”

Wood eventually settled in Ojai, California, near where Cameron lived while making Titanic. He spent a few weeks with her to learn more about her life and personality, which influenced the development of Rose’s character.

“When I met her she was charming, creative, and devastatingly funny. And her memory of her teenage years was extremely lucid,” Cameron wrote in the Illustrated Screenplay .

The artist’s studio in which Titanic viewers first see the elderly version, working over a pottery wheel, was directly inspired by Wood’s real-life home. Additionally, when Jack paints a nude portrait of Rose during one of Titanic ’s most famous scenes, Rose mentions the famous French painter Claude Monet , whom Wood had met and even watched paint in real life.

When Titanic was released in 1997, Cameron invited the 104-year-old Wood to the premiere, but she was unable to attend for health reasons. Instead, Cameron and Stuart personally visited her and gave her a video copy of the film.

Wood watched the movie, however, saying , “It was too late in life to be sad.” She died on March 12, 1998, at age 105.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson wasn’t based on any real individual. A real-life Titanic crew member named Joseph Dawson signed his name “J. Dawson,” but the director said he didn’t even know about that man while making the film. However, that hasn’t stopped his tombstone—which reads “J. Dawson”—from becoming a popular tourist destination among Titanic fans.
