14 Best Free Online Movie Streaming Sites UK 2024

With so many streaming services out there these days, it’s easier than ever to watch movies online. However, the costs quickly start to add up, whether you’re looking at a Sky subscription or a streaming service like Netflix – unless you find places to stream movies online for free.

Some services (like Amazon’s Prime Video, Paramount+, etc.) offer limited-time free trials – which is nice, but you still can’t really call it FREE.

Luckily, there are a lot of totally free movie websites as well – yes, you can actually stream movies for free these days, and we’re not just talking about old classics from 100 years ago – you can even find some blockbusters to stream without paying a single pound.

And we’re NOT talking about illegal torrents and piracy sites – all the free streaming movie services we’re going to list here, are perfectly legal. Be careful when you search online – many websites will send you to dubious destinations that not only stream illegal content, but also slam you with spammy warnings and pop-up windows… (In general, if it looks too good to be true – with the most recent Hollywood hits being offered ‘for free’ – then there’s something fishy).

And finally, all the services listed here work in the UK (as of this writing, at least) – there are many free streaming services, like Tubi, Vudo and more – that unfortunately only work in the US (though there are workarounds for that ).

So I took the time to comb through the ones that work on our side of the pond, in order to give you the definitive list of the best free movie streaming sites in the UK.

One last note – most of these will work directly on your browser, but some (like the Roku Channel) require a special app or device. We’ll note this in the site’s description.

1. Channel 4 Films

Channel 4, the free commercial broadcaster, is a great curator of films. Not only that, they also finance films via their Film4 production company.

While Channel 4 is normally available live, via Freeview , it’s also available to watch on-demand via its Channel 4 streaming service.

The streaming service (which used to be called All4 ) is totally free – you just need to register, and then you can watch it directly on your browser, or via an app, which is available for most of the streaming devices and mobile phones in the UK. The one downside? There are advert breaks.

Channel 4’s Film category has an ever-changing collection of films – from romantic comedies to thrillers, dramas, and everything in between. While you won’t usually find the most recent blockbusters – there are some real classics there, plus a few hidden gems.

2. BBC iPlayer Films

BBC iPlayer, the BBC’s on-demand player, is a treasure trove of content. It’s both a catch-up service for movies (and TV programmes) that aired on the BBC recently, plus an on-demand library full of interesting things to watch.

And, yes – it’s all free, sort of – as most people do need to pay the annual TV licence fee. Other than that, you just need to register for an account first. You can watch the movies either directly from your browser, or via the BBC iPlayer app (which is available practically everywhere).

The list of movies you can stream online for free often changes, but it includes both classics AND big Hollywood blockbusters (though usually not very recent ones). As I’m writing this, they’re offering Rainman, Moana, Ghostbusters, The Producers and many more – that’s quite the collection, and all for free (and without adverts!).

3. ITVX Films

ITVX is the streaming service from ITV – the replacement for ITV Hub.

Most of the content on ITVX is totally free to watch (with advert breaks). The optional, paid Premium tier removes the adverts and adds films and TV shows from BritBox.

But the free tier includes more than 10,000 hours of free content – including many films. And, ITVX is really pushing the envelope when it comes to free films – as the list includes a lot of classic Hollywood blockbusters, and even some newer ones.

ITVX is available on most of the streaming devices and Smart TVs sold in the UK ( except for several older boxes and TVs ), as well as on Virgin Media’s TV boxes, Sky Glass and Sky Stream , mobile phones – and you can watch it directly on your browser (once you sign up for a free account).

4. My5 Films

Another free-to-watch commercial channel that normally airs on Freeview, Channel 5 also has an on-demand service, called My5.

It’s totally free (with adverts), and you just need to register for an account. Then, you can stream the movies directly from the website, or via the app, which is available on many streaming devices.

Many of My5’s on-demand free movies come from Pluto TV Movies – which is another streaming TV service owned by Paramount (which owns Channel 5). Many of the films are obscure titles you’ve never heard of – but there are several hidden gems, as well as some older Hollywood hits.

5. The Internet Archive – Feature Films

The Internet Archive is a free digital library that includes a massive collection of digital books, games, old websites, and – movies.

All the movies available to stream for free on the Internet Archive are in the Public Domain – so most of them are pretty old. But you can find a lot of real classics there, as well as strange titles you’ve never heard of.

They offer more than 16,500 free films (as of this writing), both feature-length and shorts, divided into categories like Sci-Fi, Horror, Comedy, Film Noir and more. There are also a few curated collections, that help in finding those hidden gems.

You can stream the movies online for free, directly from the website – or even download them as a file to then watch anywhere.

6. Pluto TV

While most of the services in this list offer on-demand movies (and TV shows), Pluto is different, in that it focuses on a long list of “live” channels. You still stream them via the internet – but they work just like live TV channels, where you can only watch what’s streaming RIGHT NOW.

If you miss that live TV experience of flipping channels and dropping in on whatever’s airing at the moment, Pluto will scratch that itch. But they also offer a limited selection of on-demand movies.

There are several live channels dedicated to movies, which are divided into topics – SciFi, action, westerns and more.

You can watch Pluto TV’s content directly on their website, or via one of their apps, for mobile phones and the leading streaming devices.

7. Freevee (Formerly IMDb TV)

For a long time, IMDb TV (which is owned by Amazon) was only available in the US – but thankfully, in 2021, it launched in the UK as well , and then changed its name to Freevee.

The premium service features licensed content from various studios and production companies, as well as original productions.

Therefore, it has some classic films you’ve actually heard of, such as Reservoir Dogs, Hellraiser, Donnie Darko , and others.

And, everything is free to watch – but with advert breaks.

Freevee available both as a Prime Video Channel, which you can access directly on your browser, or with a standalone app which is currently on several streaming devices – such as Amazon’s own Fire TV, Android devices, iOS and more.

And while you do need a (free) Amazon account – you DON’T need to be a Prime subscriber.

8. Plex Free Movies And Live Channels

Plex is normally a popular personal media streamer, that helps people organise and watch their own media ( see our full Plex review ). However, they also have two services with free content – the on-demand Movies and TV section, and the Live TV section.

The on-demand Movies and TV part of Plex offers an eclectic list of movies you can watch for free (with adverts). In the US, the list includes many known titles – but in the UK, you would be hard-pressed to find movies you’ve heard of.

Still, they’re all free – and there are some interesting finds, especially if you’re a fan of some specific niches.

The Live TV section offers live channels in various topics and niches – some of which also show movies – mostly older classics and niche oddities.

Plex’s on-demand and live free movies can be streamed directly on the Plex website , or via their apps (which are available practically anywhere).

9. The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel, which launched in the UK a couple of years (see our review), is a free service from Roku, that gives you thousands of free movies, TV programmes and kids’ content on demand.

The Roku Channel in the UK features a selection of popular global and British content. Most of the movies are pretty old or obscure, but there are some classics, especially if you like specific niches like horror – as well as a few Roku originals, such as Weird: The Al Yankovic Story .

Unlike most of the other services on this list, The Roku Channel doesn’t work directly on a browser – but instead only works via one of Roku’s streaming devices ( see our Roku comparison here ). In the US, you CAN stream The Roku Channel from the website – and hopefully, this functionality will reach the UK at some point.

Formerly known as ‘W4Free’, Wedotv is the UK version of a service with several versions of free movie streaming sites around Europe. Everything is free – but with advert breaks.

The site currently offers hundreds of movies on-demand, as well as some TV series. The films are divided into categories, and they have a nice selection of genre films, such as horror and crime.

As is usually the case with free streaming, you’re not likely to find any blockbusters or many films that you’ve heard of – but you might find a few hidden gems.

11. Top Documentary Films

If you’re looking to learn something, you’ll find thousands of full-length documentary films, as well as series and shorts, divided into categories – from history to health, sports, nature and the list goes on and on.

While the user interface makes finding things a bit messy, I like the fact that each documentary has a long description, and often also user ratings and reviews – so it’s easier to decide what to watch.

Many of the films are simply embedded from YouTube – but the fact that someone took the time to curate all these selections, makes things so much more comfortable.

12. Films for Action

This is another great collection of documentaries, with their official goal being “to provide citizens of the world with the information and perspectives essential to creating a more just, sustainable, and democratic society.”

You will find more than 4,000 documentaries – from feature-length films to shorts and clips, divided into categories like Economics, Racism, Gender, Politics and more.

The interface is a bit confusing, with so much stuff to watch, but if you dig into it, you’re going to find a lot of food for thought.

Most of the titles in the digital library are free (without adverts!), with a few films only being available to the Patreons who donate to the site, and also a small selection of Pay-per-view titles.

13. Filmzie

Filmzie is yet another service with free films (and TV shows), with advert breaks, but there’s one thing that sets it apart from some of the others – there are lots of indie films here, and Filmzie say they pay the filmmakers for the views, so you’re supporting the people who made the film when you’re watching.

The selection is, for the most part, what you would expect – a mishmash of films you’ve never heard of, some interesting hidden surprises, reality shows ( Gordon Ramsay is everywhere!) and – as promised – a selection of films from independent creators.

You can watch directly on the site , and they also have an impressive selection of apps – for mobile phones, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TVs and more.

14. YouTube

YouTube gets an honourable mention, because there are indeed A LOT of free movies you can stream for free in there – but… they’re often hard to find.

With millions and millions of clips and titles, YouTube is also full of movies that get uploaded illegally – and it’s often hard to distinguish between what’s under copyright and what’s not.

Still, if you know what you’re looking for (especially older movies that are already in the public domain), you can find a lot of free films to watch and enjoy, and there are a lot of playlists that curate public domain titles.

The Best Movie Streaming Sites

Save yourself some money and make the educated choice

At this point we can’t imagine a world where our ex-partners aren’t syphoning off prestige TV from our streaming accounts, and frankly we don’t want to. Netflix and its ilk have revolutionised the entertainment industry, freed us all from pricey cable packages and provided tiger- and meth-based distraction through some extremely trying times.

But not all streaming platforms are created equal, and signing up to every single one will send your monthly subscription bill through the roof. That’s why we’ve decided to give you the lowdown on the best and most varied services in the UK, from world cinema platforms to child-friendly options.

In two words: Ted Lasso.

Price: £4.99, one week free trial

Navigation: Swish and slick, in the usual Apple mode. The Apple TV app is preinstalled on Apple devices and looks a lot like the podcast app you'll likely have bumped into at some point. Everything's well signposted and satisfying to noodle around.

Positives: The selection of new releases available only a few months after they've hit cinemas is extremely decent – right now you've got Dune , No Time To Die , Boiling Point and The 355 , all of which are still playing in theatres at the time of writing – and the TV shows pull from American channels Starz and The History Channel. There have been some very tidy British shows too – adoption sitcom Trying with Rafe Spall is a little gem. There are some big hitters like Succession and Curb Your Enthusiasm too.

Negatives: Despite one gigantic exception in Ted Lasso , Apple TV's original telly shows haven't set the world on fire. The Great is good and you've got Euphoria on there too, but would you pay for access to such glittering Apple TV jewels as Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd's The Shrink Next Door ? Hmm.

In two words: Horror dungeon.

Price: From £3.99 a month (one week free trial)

Navigation: All very straightforward, in that 'look, here's everything!' way that Amazon Prime is set up.

Positives: Rather than just whacking everything up on here and letting the algorithm shovel whatever its beeps and boops reckon a user wants, everything on Shudder is curated by an actual human being who reckons it's good. Most of your classics are on here, including Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , but so are deeper cuts like Dario Argento's Giallo chiller Deep Red and the inventive slasher mockumentary Behind the Mask , and a tranche of weirder, cult B-movies. There's a great selection of horror docs and making-ofs on there too, and Shudder's getting more and more first-run exclusives too.

Negatives: If you're not into horror, you'll probably struggle to get your money's worth.

In two words: High end.

Price: £9.99 per month for Entertainment package, £9.99 per month for Cinema package

Navigation: It's not too bad, with Netflix-style curation sliders and the ability to add stuff to your watchlist. What can be a little more annoying is seeing something you fancy, clicking on it, and then being told you can't watch it because it's in the package you've not signed up for. Would it kill you to just label them guys?

Positives: The artist formerly known as NOW TV has a load of big-hitting drama and comedy from the US and the UK. Thanks to its link-up with Sky Atlantic and HBO Succession 's here, as are Mare of Easttown , Euphoria and Yellowjackets . See also The Wire and Chernobyl . It's got a load of classic UK sitcoms and drama on there too. At last, an excuse to get rid of that tower of Open All Hours VHS tapes.

Negatives: Getting all your TV and film needs from NOW could set you back a princely £20 a month – a month! – which is steep compared to most other streamers which combine the two. And while The Simpsons are on here in all their glory, they're cropped and reframed from their original 4:3 ratio to fit into widescreen so you'll miss a fair few sight gags.

In two words: Well curated

Price: Free (£3.99 without ads, 14-day free trial)

Navigation: Not amazing, to be honest. There isn’t a dedicated ‘film’ section in the category list, and so you have to scroll and rummage around until you find the Film4 thumbnail. Except, there are two Film4 thumbnails, and while one of them features the whole roster of movies (next to the ‘Featured Collections’ heading), the other (far more accessible) one inexplicably only features twenty. Madness! But also: it’s free, so we shouldn’t complain too much.

Positives: It boasts an impressive and eclectic catalogue of films, ranging from celebrated Film4-backed productions ( 12 Years a Slave , 24 Hour Party People, My Beautiful Laundrette ) to world cinema (depending on when you’re reading this, Benedikt Erlingsson’s Woman at War may still be on the service. You should watch it right this very second). All 4’s themed collections, which change regularly, are also crammed with great films: the Pride 2021 playlist features Love Simon , 120 BPM and Simon Amstell’s Benjamin, while the Indian Film Season catalogue is a must-watch. That’s not to mention the app's forgotten classics spanning the past few decades, as well as the short films and indie projects that Channel 4 funds. The catalogue isn’t small – it’s curated, and all the better for it. Plus there’s loads of television shows to be getting on with (including, but not limited to: Seinfeld, Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo, ER, The West Wing, It’s a Sin, Peep Show, The Simpsons, The IT Crowd, This is England, Stath Lets Flats and a wide array of absolute rot).

Negatives: As we say, the navigation isn’t the best. Also the regular adverts are frustrating – especially as, if you’re watching on a laptop, you can’t switch to another tab while they’re playing. You can go ad-free by paying £3.99 a month.

In two words: Family friendly

Price: £5.99/month (free 7-day trial available)

Navigation: Well organised and easy to navigate, but slightly tricky to find the series or episode drop-down menu on an individual show.

Positives: First thing’s first: every episode of The Simpsons – the classic ones, the great ones, the mediocre ones and the “Stop! Stop! He’s already dead!" ones – are all available to stream for the first time ever, alongside every Disney, Marvel and Star Wars film in existence. The new service hosts over 500 movies and 350 TV shows, including classic Disney capers and long-forgotten hits of your childhood. There are also original documentaries and behind-the-scenes extras.

Then there's the new STAR service on the platform, which is pretty impressive. At launch it boasts acclaimed shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer , Scrubs , Modern Family and 24 , and also hosts OJ Simpson: Made in America – for our money the greatest sports/true crime documentary series ever made.

Negatives: It should come as no surprise that the quality free-falls once you’ve exhausted the top-tier line-up. It might take you a few months, but at some point you will find yourself watching Ray Liotta’s Operation Dumbo Drop.

Minute Shorts

In two words: Indie shorts

Price: Free

Navigation: Couldn’t be easier, for reasons we’ll go into below. Minute Shorts can’t even be compared to sites like Netflix in terms of scale, but the big players could learn a thing or two from the simple and adaptive approach the team behind it have taken.

Positives: When Minute Shorts founder, Janvier Wete, struggled to find a home for his first film project, he decided to do something about it. The idea behind this unique streaming site, which showcases hand-picked short films from up-and-coming directors as well as award-winners, is that you can choose the amount of time you have to spare at the very beginning. Tap onto the site or app (available on iPhone and Android), and you’re presented with three options: five, ten or twenty minutes. Then you’ll arrive at a grid of documentaries, dramas, comedies and what have you – every single one a much more enjoyable and illuminating alternative to doomscrolling through your commute on Twitter. What’s more, 50% of the films chosen are directed or produced by womxn, and 50% of the content comes from minority ethnic communities.

Negatives: We haven’t noticed any. It’s a fresh and intelligent concept utilised in a socially conscious way. We’ve all heard constant pledges from within the creative industries to improve diversity over the years, but a recent report found that the problem is actually getting worse. It’s particularly pronounced in drama, where behind-the-camera contributions from Black, Asian and minority ethnic people fell from 8.6% in 2018-19 to 5.9% in 2019-20. Platforms are important, and Minute Shorts is dedicated to providing one (there’s an option to submit your own work, naturally).

YouTube Premium

In two words: Ad-free

Price: £11.99/month (free 30-day trial available)

Navigation: Easy – it is YouTube after all. You know the drill. In fact, you don’t even really need to navigate it: just choose a video and let the algorithm do its thing, as it churns out an endless cycle of related content that you might be interested in. The downside to that kind of mad machine learning, of course, is that you’ll eventually, inevitably, land on a three-hour conspiracy video dedicated to celebrity eyelids. Might as well hear it out, though – it’s not like you have anything better to do, is it?

Positives: YouTube ads are incessant, and getting rid of them is a major positive – especially when watching public domain movies and TV shows. The price may be high compared to some other sites, but considering how much time we actually spend on YouTube (over a billion hours a day collectively, according to Forbes) it’s not a totally unreasonable price to pay for ease of use. Premium also allows you to keep playing sounds while you switch between apps on your phone or tablet, and also when you decide to lock your screen – a pesky annoyance on the free model. What’s more, you can download videos to your device for offline use, a very useful feature for travelling (in the event that we’re actually allowed to travel anywhere anytime soon). You also get YouTube Music Premium along with the package, which features certain albums and tracks that Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal don’t have rights for.

Negatives: It’s relatively expensive and ultimately unnecessary if you don’t spend enough time on YouTube every day. The Premium deal doesn’t give you free access to YouTube’s wide selection of rentable/purchasable movies and TV shows (Amazon Prime also suffers from not clearly setting out its free selection), and they don't feature ads anyway.

In two words: Arthouse Netflix

Price: £9.99/month (free 30-day trial available)

Navigation: Great. It doesn’t try to categorise or algorithmicise its eclectic database too much, and it’s all the better for it – diving headfirst into unknown territory is part of the Mubi mindset. A four-hour near-silent movie set in feudal Japan? Why the hell not.

Positives: The palaver that surrounded Parasite ’s Academy Award win revealed just how narrow-minded English-speaking audiences can be about world cinema. Mubi’s highly-curated collection will introduce you to foreign stories, directors and actors, as well as taboo-breaking, boundary-pushing arthouse movies that will challenge, move and occasionally bore the living shit out of you. What's more, Mubi has introduced a new 'Library' service that hosts a huge back catalogue of films.

Negatives: Smaller selection than Netflix.

In two words: Old reliable

Price: From £5.99/month (free 30-day trial available)

Navigation: Pretty slick. Everything’s organised under useful and impressively niche genres and categories (‘Cringe Binge’, ‘Irreverent British TV Programmes’ etc). The search function – which supplies you with recommended alternatives to movies you type in – is great too.

Positives: While it still pales in comparison to its American counterpart, Netflix UK has the best collection of readily-streamable movie, TV shows and documentaries bar none. What’s more, the ‘Netflix Original’ production house occasionally throws up a belter – highlights over lockdown included crime drama Ozark, Michael Jordan doc Last Dance and the true-crime meme factory Tiger King, and the latter two became the talk of Twitter for months on end. It’s also one of the cheapest options out there.

Negatives: A distinct lack of foreign cinema, and the site carries far fewer classic, mid-and-early-century movies than it once did. Passive aggressive ‘Are You Still Watching?’ prompts add a sad air to streaming binges.

In two words: Global cinema

Price: £4.99/month (free 14-day trial available, 30 with Prime)

Navigation: Not great, not terrible. It’s all divided into genres and thematic collections.

Positives: Similar to Mubi at half the price, BFI Player seeks to introduce audiences to arthouse cinema and contemporary classics (recent highlights include Bong Joon-Ho’s Mother and the ‘Japan 2020’ series of films, which includes Tokyo Story , otherwise known as the other greatest movie of all-time). It’s a broad mix of films, but recommendations from the likes of Mark Kermode will help you pick the right film. Much like Mubi the selection is relatively limited, but it also provides plentiful rental options at reasonable prices.

Negatives: No app. While that’s fine for now (if you’re able to cast your laptop screen to your TV), it’s frustrating for those of us who want to watch these great pieces of art as the director originally intended: cut up into 30-minute segments on a mobile phone during a rush hour commute.

In two words: Package deal

Price: From £7.99/month (free 30-day trial available)

Navigation: Probably the best of all the streaming sites. Easy to navigate and well organised.

Positives: The quality of NOW TV is really dependant on how much you’re willing to pay. The £8.99 Entertainment Pass has a good selection of critically-acclaimed TV shows that you won’t find on Freeview ( Chernobyl, The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones ), and the £11.99 Sky Cinema Pass is an impressive deal too – boasting over 1,000 movies and a steady stream of new ones, too. Hayu, the cheapest pass at £3.99, is a deep trove of reality TV episodes, and there’s a £3.99 kids option too.

Negatives: Combining the Entertainment and Cinema passes would make this the priciest option.

Amazon Prime

In two words: Kafka-esque mindfuck

Navigation: Slow and cluttered and baffling, seemingly driven by algorithmic data over any kind of design philosophy.

Positives: For £7.99 a month you’ll also be receiving all Amazon Prime benefits. That means unlimited one-day and same-day delivery, Prime Music, Kindle’s lending library, as well as access to Amazon Pantry and a host of other features. It’s far more than a streaming site – it’s part of a lifestyle package. It has its own original programming, too, and Amazon are piling millions upon millions into becoming a rival to Netflix. Having said that, they haven't produced a legitimate must-watch yet.

Negatives: The selection is pretty hit and miss, and the navigation is – have we mentioned this? – bad.

In two words: Dave on-demand

Price: From £5.99/month (free 7-day trial available)

Navigation: Really easy. Neatly divided into genre tabs at the top and more granular divisions further below, there are also editorialised collections – celebrity superfans picking their favourite Spitting Image episodes, for example.

Positives: Created by the BBC and ITV, this is mainly a resource for classic British TV shows. If you’re the kind of person who still stubbornly refuses to engage with American comedy (a huge percentage of the population, weirdly!) then this is a perfect option. But while the massive box-set collection is the main draw, the service also offers a wide catalogue of British films – from forgotten comedy feature lengths to indie dramas. It’s also one of the only streaming sites that’s still invested in hosting old classics, like Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps and John Mackenzie’s The Long Good Friday .

Negatives: It just doesn’t have the same amount of quality films as other sites. Click along the British Film Classics category, and it’s not long before you end up on stuff like The Inbetweeners Movie and Porridge The Film ­– not bad by any stretch, but hardly classics. What movie do you want to watch next? This is a loaded question. The list of movies to watch bends to the will of passwords you've acquired for various streaming services (whether your own or from a generous friend or family member). Most streamers have a staple service — the one that's been solidified into our monthly budget like bills and rent (probably Netflix for most people in the UK). But your reliable option probably doesn't have every single film you want to watch, especially when titles are constantly flip-flopping which service they call home.

Wired marks 2018 as the start of the streaming wars. Since then, the streaming service market has been an ever-evolving car crash. It seems like a major service has dropped every year since, with the likes of Disney+ and Peacock launching relatively recently.

In a way, the branching out makes sense. More and more networks and media conglomerates are deciding that they want the rights to their own stuff rather than letting Netflix and Prime Video rake in the subscription fees. But for the viewer, keeping track of which libraries are worth yet another £5 to £10 a month often leads to shamelessly begging an acquaintance for their password.

Unfortunately, this isn't a long-term solution to your streaming woes, so we've broken down the advantages and disadvantages of each app — both generally and for specific fandoms — to help you find the best site for you.

What's the difference between streaming sites and live services?

Platforms like Sling TV, fubo TV, and DirecTV offer an assortment of channels for a monthly free. While these are great for catching sports, TV shows, or the news as it airs, it's probably not a necessary investment for movie watching.

Unless you're trying to catch, say, an old school movie marathon, but then again, many of those films can probably be found on a streaming service.

What are the most important features of a streaming service?

The number of movies (and whether those movies actually pique your interest) is a given piece of criteria, as well as price. But some other factors can help set similar platforms apart:

Concurrent stream allowance — Despite a few streaming platforms threatening to crack down on password sharing over the past few years, pretty much every mainstream streaming service allows at least two simultaneous streams at once. This means that a handful of people in different households can use the same login info and watch at the same time. Large families or friend groups who plan to share an account should probably opt for a service that allows at least three devices streaming at once.

Free trials — It's always nice to preview a service out before you commit. In that week-long(ish) period, you can browse the full library, test the 4K or HDR upscaling if you care about that, and get an overall idea of how smooth or laggy the interface runs. Every paid streaming service on our list offers at least five days of free play time — Disney+ is the notorious oddball that doesn't.

4K and HDR support — People who have gotten used to binge-watching in regular HD on the TV they've had since college probably don't care much about higher resolution viewing. Others can't focus on anything but the indecipherable blobs. The latter group of people will have to be pickier about the apps they pay for — because while 4K TVs are common nowadays, content available to stream in 4K isn't yet . For instance, Netflix only unlocks 4K upscaling if you bump your plan to the most expensive one, and HBO Max only offers 4K for certain movies. This will require a certain internet speed, too.

Compatible devices — No one's going to pay for a streaming service that's impossible to access on their smart TV or device they use to access apps on their TV. Luckily, barring a few temporary caveats, most streaming services listed below play nicely with all that stuff. Unless specifically noted, you can assume that each app listed is compatible with the streaming interface of most big brand TVs, the main mobile operating systems (iOS and Android apps), media players (Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV), and gaming consoles (Playstation and Xbox). 

There are plenty of other things to consider when selecting a streaming service, but keeping these things in mind will help you get started.

How do you stream global content?

Signing up for a VPN can open the door to a plethora of international shows and films that aren't available in the UK. VPNs essentially allow you to make up your own internet rules by carving out a personal security tunnel in which you browse, stream, or game the way you normally would. 

That security tunnel paves the way for location spoofing and getting around location-based roadblocks or censors. All decent VPNs offer a wide selection of servers based in multiple geographic locations. Picking one of those essentially tricks your ISP into thinking your device is based there, maneuvering around geoblocks and opening the door to international content, like another country's Netflix library.

Should you consider pirated movie sites?

VPNs and cybersecurity go hand in hand. When framing cybersecurity around movies, the conversation naturally leads to pirated movie sites. We've all used them, and admittedly, they've saved all of our asses once or twice when we couldn't find the movie we wanted anywhere else. But they're not as instantaneous as we give them credit for — not when you have to "X" out of five pop-up ads before the movie starts, plus any time you need to pause or fast forward. Not only does the experience just suck, but a misdirected click on an infected ad could get you sent to a website with malware waiting in the wings. 

Malware spreading is much more likely if you actually download the movie or a whole app rather than watching in a browser, but still. Cybercriminals are on their A-game knowing that the pandemic has people looking for stuff to watch to fill up their time. 

Antivirus software is the obvious first line of defense here, but that doesn't help with the clunky interface or volatility of these sites. Stuff freezes, audio stops working, and people's words don't line up with their mouths. Most pirated movie sites are shut down eventually, too, and frequently have to change their domain name to stay up and running. It's just not a reliable setup, especially with apps like Tubi and Documentary+ out there. (Yes, Macs need to be armed with antivirus , too.)

Best For Range

Death, taxes, and Netflix . We're at the point where access to Netflix (whether through your own login or someone else's) is so ubiquitous, the app barely requires explanation. 

To sum up the ins and outs for those who have yet to hop on the bandwagon, it's the first place to check for that random movie you've been itching to watch. 

A respectable subscription price gets you access to over 3,000 movie titles. This impressive range is amplified by critically-acclaimed Netflix originals.

Best For Amazon Regulars

The frequently-Googled question "Is Amazon Prime worth it?" seems like a "duh" moment when you consider that the fast and free shipping also comes with fast and free access to one of the best streaming libraries on the market.

Amazon Prime Video is simply an included perk of a Prime account. While Prime members will still have to pay to rent titles (like ones still in cinemas or freshly released), nearly 13,000 films are completely free.

The most annoying part is that free and paid titles are mixed together, and the browsing function can be generally chaotic.

Best For Kids

It took forever for us to get a streaming service with all things Disney in one place. But Disney+ proved that it was a force to be reckoned with when it sucked in 10 million subscribers within 24 hours of launch. 

Let's not kid here: It's hard to beat the app that's home to all of the Star Wars movies, all of the Marvel movies, and their spinoffs. Even for people who have never seen a single movie from either franchise, Disney+ is worth the cost for the pure nostalgia. From the princess movies to Pixar favourites to oldies from the vault to live-action remakes, it's a must to have on hand. 

The only part that's not such a fairytale is the absence of a free trial.

Best For Horror

Apple's exclusive films deserve as much attention as its shows. Both a Beastie Boys and Billie Eilish documentary are there, as well as titles with names like Tom Hanks, Anthony Mackie, and Justin Timberlake. 

The allowance for six simultaneous streams (double what most services allow) and HDR support are rare instances of Apple being more generous than they have to be.

Streaming services have changed the way we watch TV shows and movies. We no longer have to wait until a certain date and time to watch something that tickles our fancy - there's plenty available to watch on multiple devices, wherever we happen to be.

The only problem is, with so many subscription services and places to stream content online, which should get your hard-earned cash?

Which is the best streaming service in the UK?

You can read all about the biggest streaming services in the UK below. However, we've also chosen our current favourite... Disney+ .

Disney+ was the winner of the TV streaming service of the year category in the Pocket-lint Awards 2023, and its current line-up of Star Wars and Marvel shows and films is perfectly complemented with other dramas available through the Star section (in the UK and Europe). Wu-Tang: An American Saga is a fine example of something you wouldn't necessarily associate with Disney, for example.

• Price: £7.99 per month or £79.90 when paid for 12-months upfront
• Notable shows (and/or films): The Mandalorian, Hawkeye, Andor, Willow, Pam & Tommy

Because it's run by Disney, the presentation and depth of content on Disney+ is very impressive. All the Disney classic animated films are available, as well as all of Pixar's output, the whole Star Wars saga and plenty more, including hit show The Mandalorian and the Marvel Cinematic Universe .

Box sets of TV shows for kids young and old are on offer, and thanks to the Star section in the UK and Europe, there are also plenty of more mature movies and series to choose from. Shows and movies can also be downloaded for offline viewing - for a car journey, say. And content is available in 4K HDR (Dolby Vision) and with Dolby Atmos where available - all as part of the standard membership fee.

The best of the rest

Netflix is the biggest name in streaming for multiple reasons - it offers a wide selection of movies and TV shows, with several series being exclusive to the platform or made and funded by Netflix itself.

• Price: From £5.99 per month for Basic with Ads membership, up to £15.99 for Premium with 4K HDR (Dolby Vision) viewing
• Notable shows (and/or films): Stranger Things, The Umbrella Academy, Better Call Saul, Squid Game
• Devices include: PC, Mac, games consoles , Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Sky Q and Glass (Stream), Virgin TV

Netflix is among the oldest, most established streaming services and that is reflected in the amount of content available to watch - the library is vast. It also creates its own programming and big budget movies, so there's regularly something new to watch on the platform.

As well as profiles for each member of the family, you can set up a dedicated kids account, so your child will only view age-appropriate shows.

4K video streaming is available for a large amount of content, in HDR and Dolby Vision for supported devices. You will need to pay for the most expensive tier to get it, however.

Offline viewing is also available to all but the Basic with Ads plan.

Amazon Prime Video

Like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video offers a subscription-based streaming service. It too makes a range of TV shows that are exclusive to the platform and has content deals for shows made abroad, but can only be found on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.

• Price: As part of Amazon Prime membership (at £8.99 per month, £95 per year), or £5.99 per month for just Prime Video
• Notable shows (and/or films): The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Boys, Jack Ryan, The Handmaid's Tale

Amazon effectively offers the best of both worlds with its service, as you can stream shows and movies as part of your subscription, but also pay to rent or buy newer releases or box sets.

Like with Netflix and Disney+, it makes its own shows and films that are exclusive to the platform, with a recent example being the Lord of the Rings TV series, The Rings of Power.

Much of the content is presented in 4K HDR and Dolby Vision where possible, but 1080p when not. Resolution is largely dependent on your broadband speeds.

Although it was one of the last major streaming services to adopt different profiles, you can now set up different homescreens for each family member and limit access for younger members.

The only main caveat to having the ability to also rent and buy movies through the same platform is that you can often get confused as to what's available to stream as part of your subscription, and what will cost you extra.

Apple's own premium streaming service is another relatively recent entrant to the market, and provides an interesting option for people. While its lineup is truncated in comparison to others, it's selection of original programming is of a very high quality - with the likes of Ted Lasso and movie Coda winning awards around the globe.

• Price: £6.99 per month, you also get three-months free when purchasing an Apple device
• Notable shows (and/or films): Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Coda, Severance
• Devices include: PC, Mac, games consoles , Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Google TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Sky Q and Glass (Stream)

Apple's TV+ service isn't a widely served with content in comparison with some of the others, as it only ranges exclusive programming and movies (mostly made by Apple itself). It also seems to set a high bar when it comes to quality, with many of its series and films winning awards - such as Ted Lasso and the Oscar-winning movie, Coda.

Apple also sets the standard when it comes to picture and audio performance, with 4K HDR (Dolby Vision) and Dolby Atmos coming as standard across most of its productions. Plus, as with Amazon's Prime Video, you can use the same Apple TV app across the majority of platforms to view rented or purchased videos. You may have to buy or rent the show or movie through your iPhone or iPad first, but can then watch it at its best on a Smart TV or streaming device.

Unlike most of its peers, Apple TV+ does not currently support different family profiles on the same account. Although you can set up different accounts and link them to the same family subscription.

Sky-owned Now (formerly Now TV) is a service offered by the broadcaster and provider for those without access to a satellite dish or who want something simpler and more flexible than a conventional TV package. It offers content to view live and on demand that would normally be broadcast by Sky on one or more of its many channels.

• Price: Plans include Entertainment or Cinema for £9.99 per month each, Sky Sports £34.99 per month
• Notable shows (and/or films): Live Premier League football, entire F1 season, Succession, House of the Dragon
• Devices include: PC, Mac, games consoles, Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV

With Sky being higher up the movie release window list, the films on offer through Now are excellent - they are certainly ahead of most other streaming services. You also have the added bonus of being able to subscribe to Sky Sports, for all live channels and on demand content, plus a wide range of entertainment channels and box sets. The latter includes HBO programming in the UK, including House of the Dragon and Succession.

You do have to subscribe to individual packages though, which can get pricey if you choose to take everything that's on offer. In addition, you have to pay extra for the best video and audio quality - currently 1080p and 5.1 - with a Now Boost add-on costing £6 extra per month. It does also skip adverts during on demand content though.

A relative newcomer to the UK, Paramount+ includes plenty of shows and films from the eponymous studio, including Tom Cruise starrer Maverick, plus the hugely successful Yellowstone and its spin-offs.

• Price: £6.99 per month, although it's also worth noting that Sky TV subscribers get Paramount+ for free
• Notable shows (and/or films): Halo, Yellowstone, Maverick (the Top Gun sequel), South Park, Star Trek: Discovery
• Devices include: PC, Mac, Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Sky Q and Glass (Stream)

Paramount+ has been available in the US for some time, but only came to the UK in more recent times. Because of that, it's content line-up is not as extensive as some others, although there are plenty of franchises and series exclusive to the platform. This includes the Halo TV Series and much of Star Trek. Every episode of South Park is also available to watch through Paramount+ , as is the Tom Cruise movie, Maverick.

Where it suffers at present is in its streaming quality. The UK version of the service is currently restricted to 1080p at maximum and stereo sound. The US version does have a 4K surround sound option, so we hope that will extend to Britain too at some point.

Sky TV subscribers should note that they can get Paramount+ for free in the UK, thanks to a deal between the companies. You can then watch shows on your Sky device or any other compatible box or mobile phone through the sign-up you create.

Exclusive to the UK, ITVX is free for those who just want to watch ITV programming with adverts but can also be subscribed to for added bonuses. That includes ditching the ads plus access to the entire gamut of BritBox content - including all of the classic Doctor Who episodes.

• Price: £5.99 per month or £59.99 for a whole year
• Notable shows (and/or films): Classic Doctor Who, A Spy Among Friends, Downton Abbey, The Twelve
• Devices include: PC, Mac, Xbox consoles, Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Sky Q and Glass (Stream), Virgin TV

ITVX is a UK-only service that replaced the free ITV Hub in 2022. It is primarily the home to all on demand and catch-up content from the broadcaster, ITV, although there is also a subscription element that expands the offering and includes BritBox .

While existing BritBox subscribers can continue to use the older BritBox app, all new members must subscribe through ITVX - hence we've replaced BritBox on this list. You still get access to the huge catalogue of archive British programming from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, but through the ITVX system instead. A subscription also includes ad-free catch-up streaming and offline viewing (through downloads).

All ITVX streams currently max-out at 1080p and Dolby Digital sound.

Previously called StarzPlay, the streaming service from Lionsgate has, perhaps unsurprisingly, been rebranded Lionsgate+. It offers a healthy selection of TV shows to stream, albeit from a smaller pool than some of its rivals.

• Price: £5.99 per month
• Notable shows (and/or films): Outlander, BMF, the Power Book series, The Serpent Queen
• Devices include: PC, Mac, Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Sky Q and Glass (Stream)

Lionsgate+ seems new but is actually the new name for StarzPlay. It has a healthy selection of original programming and movies that are exclusive to the platform, although they are arguably less well-known than on some of the other streaming services.

There are apps available across a wide range of devices, although you can also subscribe to Lionsgate+ through the Amazon Prime Video service as one of its channels, and watch all the shows and films via that app instead. That means it can theoretically work on a wider array of devices than Lionsgate lists itself (anything that has access to Prime Video, basically).

Lionsgate+ shows and movies are currently presented in up to 1080p only.

Discovery+ is a little different to most streaming services - it focuses primarily on reality TV and sports. There's a possibility that it will include BT Sport programming in future too, under the new name of TNT Sports, although that's yet to be fully confirmed.

• Price: £3.99 per month for an Entertainment pass, £6.99 per month for Entertainment & Sports
• Notable shows (and/or films): Gold Rush, Ghost Adventures, live sports including tennis and snooker
• Devices include: PC, Mac, Xbox consoles, Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Sky Q and Glass (Stream)

Discovery+ mainly focuses on reality TV, including documentaries and true crime shows. However, you can also subscribe to view live sports from Eurosport, including snooker, cycling and tennis.

Plus, thanks to a merger between BT Sport and Warner Discovery, the Discovery+ app will be the likely home of the newly rebraded and relaunched UK sports service, TNT Sports, from the summer of 2023. That's still awaiting confirmation, however, so hold your horses for now.

Streaming quality is limited to HD content at present.

Amazon Freevee

Amazon's Freevee service is available both through its Prime Video service and as a standalone app. It does exactly what it says on the tin and offers thousands of shows, movies and live broadcasts to watch for free.

• Price: Completely free
• Notable shows (and/or films): Alex Rider, Bosch Legacy, Judy Justice, Neighbours
• Devices include: Android Smart TVs, iOS and Android, Google TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV

Freevee is Amazon's ad-supported streaming service that provides completely free content 24/7. There is no subscription required and you only need an Amazon account to view it.

It hosts a healthy library of archive shows and films to stream on demand, such as Miami Vice, Baywatch and The West Wing, while there are channels showing live streams of popular programming, including Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen. Amazon also has a selection of original programming available, with the Bosch spin-off, Bosch : Legacy being exclusive to the platform. It will also be the new home of Neighbours - the decades-old soap opera that has been given a new lease of life as a Freevee original.

The picture resolution for Freevee is not quoted, but we suspect it's 1080p maximum. Most of the classic shows were shot in lower resolutions anyway.

Like Freevee, Pluto TV is a completely free offering that gives you access to a huge amount of streamed content at no cost. You don't even need to log into the service, just either watch live channels or on demand shows and films.

• Notable shows (and/or films): Auction Hunters, Geordie Shore, Mad Men, Charlies Angels

Like Freevee, Pluto TV is free to watch. Although you don't even need to log into this service.

It has been established for a long while in the US and is making its mark in the UK too, with over 100 free-to-stream TV channels and a large library of classic and archive shows to watch on demand. Thanks to deals with the likes of Channel 5 and MTV, there are some channels based on true crime series and music hits, while others also focus on specific shows, so you can sit back and just binge endless episodes of Mad Men or cartoons.

Picture quality again seems to max-out at 1080p although that largely suits the vast amount of source material.

Sky Go is the most unique on this list as it's a live-streaming and catch-up TV service for existing Sky TV customers. The content available depends on your TV subscription and there is an extra add-on that allows you to expand the offering to include offline viewing on mobile devices.

• Price: Free to Sky TV customers, with Sky Go Extra included in a Sky Multiscreen package
• Notable shows (and/or films): Succession, House of the Dragon, Premier League football, Sky Cinema movies
• Devices include: PC, Mac, PlayStation consoles, iOS and Android

Sky Go is more an add-on than a streaming service, as it requires an active Sky Q, Sky Glass or Sky Stream subscription first. It allows you to view Sky programming on a mobile device or PlayStation console, with the accessible content depending on your Sky package. For example, if you subscribe to Sky Sports you will also be able to watch live sports coverage on your phone or tablet.

A Sky Go Extra add-on is required for offline viewing, while Sky Q customers can also download their recordings onto a mobile device to watch later.

Other streaming apps

If you’re hungering for TV news programs, you can’t go wrong with ABC News Live . The service provides completely unrestricted access to live news content directly from ABC News and operates 24/7.

This is a single-channel option for individuals who want to watch US news. What’s more, you don’t need a VPN to watch ABC News Live, regardless of where you live. It’s a truly free option for US news, without restrictions. ABC News Live is even accessible without a VPN in China , which often restricts content from Western countries like the US.

This site puts ads on all video content, which is to be expected. You can stream ABC News Live through its dedicated app on Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV, or you can watch using any modern web browser.

2. Adult Swim

Originally part of Comedy Central, Adult Swim is now its own, separate TV network currently owned by WarnerMedia. The WarnerMedia ownership gives Adult Swim access to not just a selection of Warner’s content, but a fairly large library of TV shows that you’ll only find on Adult Swim—including the ever-popular cartoon action-comedy, Rick and Morty.

If you try to connect from outside the US, Adult Swim will display a message that says “ BLOCKED: Sorry, there must be some sort of restriction on the content we are streaming here. Come back later or select another stream”.

If you see this message from your location, use NordVPN to connect to a US server so you can acquire a US IP address and zoom right past the geographic content blocking. We’ve found NordVPN easily unblocks what Adult Swim offers for free.

Charge! is one of several genre-specific TV streaming provides that focuses on 24/7 live streaming with an ad-supported model. Charge! is geared toward fans of action TV, although it does offer some sports content on occasion.

To reiterate, this is not an on-demand streaming service. All of its TV shows and movies are broadcast live. Its model means it operates like traditional over-the-air TV stations, except that its content streams online.

If you think Comet looks familiar, you’re right. It’s owned and operated by Sinclair Broadcasting Group, which also owns and operates Charge! The only difference between Charge! and Comet is that Comet is focused on science fiction TV shows and movies.

To that end, everything we said about Charge! above applies to Comet, right down to how it operates and where you’ll find available apps for watching it outside of a web browser. You’ll even see the same location-based blocking message if you try to stream Comet from outside of the US. CONtv began its life in 2007 as the streaming service Viewster. Content distributor Cinedigm purchased the website in 2019 and rebranded it. Alongside a new name, CONtv also upended the content library. What was once a free service focused on anime is now a free service focused on action and US-based cartoons.

The bigger change that occurred with CONtv, however, was the newly implemented geographic content restrictions. As Viewster, the service was available to stream anywhere. As CONtv, however, you may not be able to access the service everywhere.

That said, CONtv’s FAQs explain that it is only available in the US. We’ve discovered that’s not actually true . Through testing, we’ve found CONtv works in many other countries outside the US, including Canada, the UK, and Germany. It’s possible that some of CONtv’s content is blocked due to licensing agreements, but we did not find any among the titles we tested (and we did not test every TV series and movie on the site for accessibility). If you do find blocked content, a VPN to a US IP address will likely unblock it for you.

This service has apps for Android and iOS devices.

Crackle was previously owned by Sony (and previously named “Sony Crackle”) until Sony sold a majority stake of the service to the company Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. The same company behind the well-known self-help book of the same name, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment immediately went to work by changing the name (back to Crackle) and ramping up the original content production.

This service now has 1,300+ titles available. Crackle lost most of its top-rated Sony content with the ownership change. However, its library still has a wide range of ad-free, on-demand streaming TV shows and movies across different genres.

If you try to visit Crackle from outside the US, you’ll see this message: “Thanks for visiting. Unfortunately, we’re not currently available in this region.” . Connect to a NordVPN server in the US to get a US IP address and bypass Crackle’s geographic content blocking .

Crackle has a large number of apps on almost any device you may want to use, including most that also work with separate VPN apps.

The CW has some of the best TV show content available in the US, especially if you’re a DC Comics fan. Impressively, The CW also provides much of that content available for free through its ad-supported streaming service, CW Seed. The company even advertises the service with the tagline “Free For All”.

This service offers 80+ titles available on-demand. 

You’ll see the following message if you try to load CW Seed TV shows from outside of the US: “Due to licensing restrictions this content is only available in the US” . That’s pretty self-explanatory. Using NordVPN and a connection to a US server, you can easily bypass that message and access both the on-demand and live content available through CW Seed.

If you plan to download the app on an Android, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV, there’s a NordVPN available on all of those devices that will still allow you to bypass geographic content blocking for the service.

8. Fawesome

This ad-supported streaming service is unique in its content is  only available through its dedicated apps. And its app library is fairly limited.

You can stream Fawesome’s 250+ titles on Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, using its Windows app or using an app for LG smart TVs.

Fawsome has some excellent content available, despite inflexibility on how to watch it. Its multi-genre library includes major TV and movie hits, like Third Rock From the Sun and The Contract .

No VPN is required as far as we can tell, but blocking may be imposed if you’re in a country known for blocking American content, such as China.

9. FilmRise (via YouTube)

FilmRise is a content distribution company that acquires licenses for various TV shows and movies. Its content is available on a large number of different streaming services, but you can access most of it through the company’s YouTube channels or its dedicated iOS, Android, and streaming device apps.

This service carries 1,500+ titles in its library.

Geographic content blocking on FilmRise is a real hit-and-miss. We’ve found that some TV shows and movies on its YouTube channel are blocked to non-US users, while others will play almost anywhere.

For example, FilmRise has full episodes of the US TV show 21 Jump Street , but you can’t watch those episodes through FilmRise’s YouTube channel if you’re a country outside the US, such as Canada, the UK, or Germany. Instead, you’ll get YouTube’s standard content blocking message: “Video unavailable. The uploader has not made this video available in your country” .

Grab a US IP address by connecting to a NordVPN server located in the US to bypass any content blocking you might find when using FilmRise. If you’re in the US and you see a geographic content blocking message from FilmRise, you will also need a VPN. However, you may need to do some trial and error by connecting to servers in different countries to determine where that content is available.

10. BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer is the UK’s largest free-to-watch streaming platform, carrying a regularly-updated library of TV shows, movies, and radio broadcasts. What’s more, it allows users to watch around a dozen channels live. These include the big ones, such as BBC One and BBC Two, as well as regional channels like S4C and Alba, which are some of the only places you can stream Welsh and Gaelic content online.

The only catch is that you’ll need a TV license to use this platform. Still, with around 95 percent of UK households currently paying for one, there’s a strong chance you can watch BBC iPlayer without spending anything extra.

BBC iPlayer is only available in the UK, so if you’re traveling abroad, you’ll need a VPN to continue using the service.

11. Amazon Freevee

This service used to be called IMDb TV, but after being bought by Amazon, it has since been integrated into the company’s streaming library. Don’t worry, though: you do not need an Amazon Prime account to watch , though you will have to create a free Amazon account (if you have one that you use for shopping, this will do nicely).

According to JustWatch, Freevee currently has over 3,000 ad-supported titles to choose from. These are easy hurdles to jump, but if you’re outside of the US Peacock will block your entry completely. Going to the website with a non-US IP address yields the following message: “This service is unavailable in your region” .

Grab a US IP address using NordVPN, then load up the Peacock website. From there, you can register using any email address and some other basic information. Peacock does not ask for credit card details for the free account, so anyone can sign up to use it.

This service is also available via apps for most popular devices, many of which can be paired with a VPN app where available.

There might be some title-specific geo-blocking applied, as this is common when sites like this have licensed content. However, we did not see any during testing. If you do find any content that’s blocked, we’ve verified that Popcornflix does work with a VPN.

If you plan to watch Popcornflix on devices outside of a desktop or laptop computer, its Android, iOS, and Fire TV apps can be paired with VPN apps for those devices.

18. SBS On Demand

SBS On Demand is singlehandedly one of the best streaming sites for TV shows and movies anywhere in the world. It carries top-rated streaming from around the world, including many Oscar-winning titles.

SBS On Demand is based in and serves the Australian market. Accessing its impressive content library requires an Australian IP address. If you try to go to the SBS On Demand website from outside of Australia, you’ll see the following message: “Content unavailable in your location. Most of our content is only available to stream within Australia due to publishing rights” .

We’ve found this service does not block VPNs. Connect to a VPN server in Australia to get an Australia-based IP address and stream SBS On Demand from anywhere, including from the US.

19. Sling TV

Although it’s known more widely as the second-cheapest virtual multichannel video programming distributor in the US (Philo takes the top spot there), Sling TV has an almost hidden free streaming section that anyone with a US IP address can take advantage can use, even without creating a Sling TV account.

The free version offers 550+ titles on-demand.

Sling TV imposes site-wide geographic content blocking. Even trying to access its homepage will give you the following message: “We’re sorry. Sling TV is only available inside the US. Thank you for your interest” .

To get rid of this message and get to the free content, connect to a VPN server in the US. Sling TV will then let you right in and allow you to enjoy its free TV shows and movies.

Stirr offers free TV and movies to anyone, but you’re going to be extremely limited if you’re outside of the US. This service takes a unique approach by mixing your free channel and movies based on what US city you live in, and not by country. If you try to use Stirr with an IP address from outside of the US, the service will show you its “National” package of content, which is almost nothing.

Connecting to a US VPN server through NordVPN or other VPN providers is necessary to gain access to Stirr’s content libraries. But you may also want to hop around to different servers in the US to see what type of content you get.

That recommendation also applies to US users, as well. Since Stirr will show you different channels based on your city, you may want to use a VPN to get the full benefit of the service.

Stirr has apps several devices that also work with VPN apps: Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV.

Tubi’s winning free-with-ad model allowed it to grow to become one of the largest and best-streaming sites for TV and movies. It also caught the attention of Fox Corporation, which purchased the site in 2020.

This service carries 28,000+ titles in its content library.

Tubi was previously available in multiple countries and offered different libraries where available. Now, however, its expansive library of top-rated TV shows and movies is only available to those with a US IP address.

If you try to stream from outside the US (but from a non-EU country), the service displays the following block message: “Content unavailable. Sorry, this video is not currently available”.

And if you try to connect from an EU country, you’ll get this message: “I’ll be back. – Terminator. Tubi is the largest free movie and TV streaming service in the US. We are not available in Europe due to changes in EU laws. The GDPR went into effect on May 2018; Tubi is working on compliance and planning to re-launch in European countries soon”.

There may be hope in the future that Tubi will bring its services overseas. For now, a VPN works well to bypass its existing content blocks.

Tubi is available through multiple apps for devices that work with a VPN, including Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV.

Although it primarily operates as a service for buying and renting digital TV shows and movies, Vudu also carries many free titles that are supported by advertisements.

The service is only available in the US, however. It doesn’t even both to provide an IP block message. If you try to access the site from outside of the US, you’ll just see an HTTP ERROR 400 page.

Connect to any US VPN server to get an IP address and bypass this restriction. You can also watch with a bypass on multiple devices thanks to a large library of dedicated apps for Android, iOS, Apple TV, Fire TV, and more.

Although most of the best free streaming sites for TV and movies are locked to the US, there still many options available elsewhere. None of that matters if you can’t access XUMO’s content . XUMO is currently restricted to US IP addresses. We’ve found VPNs work to bypass Xumo’s geographic content blocking, but the service uses fairly effective anti-VPN countermeasures. You may need to contact your VPN provider’s customer support to determine which VPN servers effectively bypass its content blocking.

Is Free Video Streaming Actually Free?

Nothing in life is truly free. Although free video streaming services may not cost money, you are almost certainly paying with the personal data that the services collect. In the case of most free video streaming services, your ad views are what matter. Kanopy is an exception; it doesn't show ads.

The specifics of ad behavior vary across services. For instance, Amazon Freevee, Crackle, and Xumo include markers on the playback interface to show you exactly where to expect ads to play. It's a safe bet that you'll sit through ads about every 10 minutes or so, at least for on-demand content. CW Seed has a particularly bad ad experience; in testing, we had to sit through five ads (each between 15 and 30 seconds long) when streaming a 43-minute episode. Plex does not insert ads into streams, though Crunchyroll, RetroCrush, and Tubi all include ads.

In our experience, it's sometimes possible to get around ads on the services' web versions by using a combination of ad-blocking and privacy-enhancing extensions. However, we've had less luck blocking commercials when using Hulu's ad-supported base tiers. To get rid of ads, you need to pay for a higher tier. Services that don't include ads at all are becoming increasingly rare. Disney+ , Max, Netflix, and Prime Video all now have ad-supported tiers.

You can still set up an account with those services (except for with CW Seed and Xumo), but doing so does not grant you extra content or remove ads. Instead, accounts generally let you track what you watch and customize other aspects of the experience.

Other free services are more like free samples that lock their full library and features behind a paywall. Crunchyroll and PBS Video offer paid plans that unlock ad-free streams, premium content, and other perks. Plex, too, has a premium tier option, called Plex Pass. This upgraded plan gives you extra library management features but doesn't expand the available on-demand content.

Common Limitations of Free Video Streaming

Don't expect free services to include all the top features that you'd associate with paid services. The most apparent limitation may be the maximum streaming resolution available, with few services supporting full-HD streams. Crunchyroll and Kanopy are the only services that support 1080p streaming at their free tiers. Most other on-demand content on the other services is capped at 720p or lower. For example, many of the popular movies on Tubi are available to stream at about 540p, which is disappointing. That said, the base Netflix plan caps the streaming resolution to SD quality, so subscribers to that plan will see an improvement with free services. Still, most paid services generally provide a better viewing experience. Apple TV+ , for example, supports high-end Dolby audio and video standards, plus 4K streaming.

Most free on-demand services don't support offline downloads on mobile devices, though the paid options of some anime streaming services have this capability. You can sync media offline from your Plex server, with a Plex Pass, but if you already own that media, you can skip Plex altogether and transfer files to your device's local storage.

Kanopy has a limitation that no other streaming service does: It caps the number of titles you can watch each month. Every other streaming service offers unlimited access. Kanopy's restriction at least does not apply to its kid-friendly content.

Free live TV options don't include DVR recording capabilities or storage. You don't have to pay much for these features. Inexpensive options, such as Philo and Sling TV , have DVR and storage capabilities.

Video Streaming Parental Control and Accessibility

A few of the free services include parental control options, though most are extremely limited in terms of functionality. Tubi is unique in that it lets you specify what is allowed by content rating. Others use a simple on or off toggle, or in the case of many anime streaming services, provide an option to filter mature or explicit content. Kanopy includes a dedicated section for kid-friendly content. However, most free services have an implementation problem; there's nothing to prevent your kid from signing up for the service on their own or not using an account at all.

All the free services we've reviewed include Closed Caption (CC) options for most of their content. Amazon Freevee, CW Seed, Crackle, Kanopy, PBS Video, Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Xumo let you customize their subtitles' appearances. We won't get into the heated anime sub vs dub argument here, but after acquiring Funimation's dubbed content Crunchyroll is now the best of all worlds. Amazon Freevee provides limited support for audio descriptions and is the only free service we reviewed that offers this accessibility feature.

Should You Use a Free Streaming Video Service?

If there's something on any of these services that you want to watch, you should take advantage of the fact that they are free. The limited resolution options and ads may diminish the experience a bit, but if you weren't going to pay for the content anyway, that's a fine compromise. You won't find any of the latest releases, either, so it's likely not important to ensure you have the best possible viewing experience.

If you are seeking new shows to binge-watch, you won't find many worthwhile series. As mentioned, originals and popular classic shows are unlikely to leave their content holders' services. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for, or rather don't pay for in this case.

The cord-cutting audience won't likely find a suitable replacement in the free category either, as the majority of actual live content on the free options is from a handful of news networks. Still, if cable's appeal was just to have something on in the background as an audial or visual distraction, then these might fit the bill. For live cable channels and sports, you need to pay up.

Free vs. Paid Video Streaming

You don't have to exclusively use paid or free services. Nor do you have to use the same services every month. You may find that you can get by just fine with one or two paid options, and a free live TV option to fill the void left by cable. Even if you pay for a full-fledged, live TV streaming service (which likely includes a significant amount of on-demand content), you may find that free offerings fill an occasional gap.
