Made in Future: A Story of Marketing, Media, and Content for our Times

Publisher,Penguin Random House SEA Publication Date, July 6, 2022 Format, Paperback Weight, 420 g No. of Pages, 332

In this new age, marketers, media owners, agencies and content creators tend to struggle with the new realities of marketing. Everything they learnt while they were growing up is being challenged, and seems to be growing irrelevant against the disruptors that they face. Marketing thinking, even in some of the world’s largest organizations, is disconnected from their own ground-level executions.

The game has changed. But they are still playing by the rules of the 1990s. They are set to lose if they keep applying Band-Aids on a broken model and trying to fit the future in the containers of the past. They need a ‘native’ view of marketing in the digital age. This book provides a conceptual glue.

Prashant Kumar, in his groundbreaking new book  Made in Future , delves into the principles and applications of marketing strategy in the new age. Rich in research and great case studies, this book is an effort to bridge the two worlds of old school marketing principles and the new consumer and media behaviours.

Lets Discuss Something Good…

Book Review: Made in Future: A Story of Marketing, Media, and Content for Our Times by Prashant Kumar

Being a blogger influencer and digital marketing professional, I know the true potential and value of this book. Lucky me to have found this book by an industry expert, such books are rare!!

Made in Future: A Story of Marketing, Media, and Content for Our Times by Prashant Kumar is a treasure trove that cannot be ignored by bloggers, influencers, marketers, ambitious corporate people, and above all for those entrepreneurs who have put their life in the marketplaces. The length and breadth of the book is extensive, its coverage on marketing approaches, history, disruption, future is simply lollapalooza.

I sighed in appreciation for the author as he knows so much about marketing…simply superb and amusing. I have read many short e-books on marketing tips, tricks, strategies, and what not…but this one blows me out. The author takes time to define and explain all things that matter in the marketing. He begins with types of marketplaces, rules, customer positioning, brand strategies, social media cause and effect. He explains with perfect examples and analogies. For instance, he talked about the ruination of Tata Nano due to negative marketing, and on the other hand how Apple products lead the race because of superb UX.

But the best part that I liked from the book was based on social media. He explained some eight parts and parcel of it, including social media crises. But it was really a takeaway for me, since I am someone who is dependent on social media ads for revenue for our business.

Right since the beginning you will notice that the author included data and technology in every aspect of marketing because it’s future. Marketing is nothing without data and tech trends. Data with technology is considered IR 4.0. It means industrial revolution 4.0.

The book offers great insights into everything related to new-age marketing. I could not grasp all in one reading, so I made personal notes for referring over and again. The take on marketing is simply superb and engrossing and way ahead than time. Reading with patience such a great book means witnessing a change in life. Prashant’s control over language, presentation of facts and brands’ success/failure stories take the book to a different level. The more I praise this book, the less it’s going to be.

Book review: made in future by prashant kumar.

Indeed a story of marketing, media, & content for our times. It’s a high-value book for people involved into understanding businesses, media houses, online and offline marketing, and much more. However, the book is a treasure for marketing professionals, as like other fields are changing, so the marketing landscape is bound to change.

made in future book review

The author Prashant Kumar is a veteran from the marketing field. His work goes back to dot com era, where he experimented and learnt a lot before commencing Entropia, now a part of Accenture.

The book is not a cakewalk; it’s heavy at many places, yet beneficial for its discerning readers. As a matter of fact, whosoever wants to be updated with marketing insights and secrets, need to pick up this book at the first opportunity.

The book’s language, analogy, graphs, charts – is all class, of international standard. Prashant has delivered very important lessons and tricks using simple language, with relevant examples, yet the field-jargons are rampant. Otherwise it is a way useful book.

Let’s see what’s inside the book that stretches up to 300 pages. The core theme of the book is to bring disruptions of the marketing into limelight along with data and ever-evolving technology.

The book holds 12 chapters, all built around marketing trends and updates, marketplaces, and other allied factors. The author posits that the traditional approach of marketing is no longer available due to excessive data mediated aspects like ML, AI, and so on. Also, technology has played a major role in changing the markets like the advent of marketplaces and social media platforms.

The first chapter sheds light on types of marketplaces. Prashant explained them lucidly as per the segmentation such as utility, sensorial, spontaneous, and relationship. All chapters are beyond definitions, the marketplace insights will equip any e-commerce entrepreneur with right sense of information, and it’ll help them in understanding their target audience and formulating business strategies, as one cannot sell anything in any marketplace. And today’s market is governed by marketplace rules and technology. The author further says that continuous evolution of marketplace is possible due to data and technology.

The book is not banal at any juncture. It quotes examples from history of industrial revolution to 1980s and 90s. It’s a useful book to understand markets, marketplaces actors, brand positioning, and social media measurement, creativity, and much more. The biggest USP of the book is that you can identify yourself with respect to the market. It’s an eye-opener sort of book, and a must read for new, budding, and all types of entrepreneurs.

FUTURE TENSE

How we made artificial intelligence―and how it will change everything.

by Martha Brockenbrough ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 19, 2024

A valuable resource for classrooms, libraries, and forward-looking teens.

A deep dive into the past, present, and future of artificial intelligence.

The book’s early chapters cover AI’s history—going back to ideas from ancient China, Egypt, and Greece—providing readers with a thorough foundation that summarizes various technological developments, each more advanced than the next. This section is best suited to research papers, as the language tends toward the dense and dry. That said, readers will appreciate the text’s impressive clarity in technical explanations and the author’s obvious respect for young readers’ intelligence. The writing becomes remarkably more engaging once the book progresses to modern applications—the good (some medical uses), the bad (surveillance of daily life, deception by bots), and the problems AI can learn to solve. Brockenbrough is particularly good at finding ways to tie its applications to students’ lives through relatable examples. At the same time, she covers the broader international context (for example, she compares the AI race between China and the U.S. to the Cold War space race). The book documents both the diversity of the humans behind the creation of AI and the racial bias that can be baked into the technology through the flawed data it’s trained on. A careful neutrality, an emphasis on the pros and cons of AI itself, clear ethical judgments regarding certain uses (e.g., privacy violations and manipulation of opinions and emotions), factual accuracy, and rigorous documentation all support authorial credibility and make this an important read.

THE NEW QUEER CONSCIENCE

THE NEW QUEER CONSCIENCE

From the pocket change collective series.

by Adam Eli ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 2, 2020

Small but mighty necessary reading.

A miniature manifesto for radical queer acceptance that weaves together the personal and political.

Eli, a cis gay white Jewish man, uses his own identities and experiences to frame and acknowledge his perspective. In the prologue, Eli compares the global Jewish community to the global queer community, noting, “We don’t always get it right, but the importance of showing up for other Jews has been carved into the DNA of what it means to be Jewish. It is my dream that queer people develop the same ideology—what I like to call a Global Queer Conscience.” He details his own isolating experiences as a queer adolescent in an Orthodox Jewish community and reflects on how he and so many others would have benefitted from a robust and supportive queer community. The rest of the book outlines 10 principles based on the belief that an expectation of mutual care and concern across various other dimensions of identity can be integrated into queer community values. Eli’s prose is clear, straightforward, and powerful. While he makes some choices that may be divisive—for example, using the initialism LGBTQIAA+ which includes “ally”—he always makes clear those are his personal choices and that the language is ever evolving.

THEY CALLED US ENEMY

by George Takei & Justin Eisinger & Steven Scott ; illustrated by Harmony Becker ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 16, 2019

A powerful reminder of a history that is all too timely today.

A beautifully heart-wrenching graphic-novel adaptation of actor and activist Takei’s ( Lions and Tigers and Bears , 2013, etc.) childhood experience of incarceration in a World War II camp for Japanese Americans.

Takei had not yet started school when he, his parents, and his younger siblings were forced to leave their home and report to the Santa Anita Racetrack for “processing and removal” due to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066. The creators smoothly and cleverly embed the historical context within which Takei’s family’s story takes place, allowing readers to simultaneously experience the daily humiliations that they suffered in the camps while providing readers with a broader understanding of the federal legislation, lawsuits, and actions which led to and maintained this injustice. The heroes who fought against this and provided support to and within the Japanese American community, such as Fred Korematsu, the 442nd Regiment, Herbert Nicholson, and the ACLU’s Wayne Collins, are also highlighted, but the focus always remains on the many sacrifices that Takei’s parents made to ensure the safety and survival of their family while shielding their children from knowing the depths of the hatred they faced and danger they were in. The creators also highlight the dangerous parallels between the hate speech, stereotyping, and legislation used against Japanese Americans and the trajectory of current events. Delicate grayscale illustrations effectively convey the intense emotions and the stark living conditions.

Book Review: ‘The Age of AI: And Our Human Future’

made in future book review

From ensemble cast of authors former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and MIT’s Daniel Huttenlocher comes “The Age of AI: And Our Human Future,” an exploration of how artificial intelligence (AI) is already changing our world and how it may someday change the very nature of the human condition.

AI will affect everything from the way we make scientific discoveries to the way warfare is conducted, the authors predict. It has already surpassed the world’s greatest chess players, and it won’t be long before AI algorithms are the safest drivers on the road, the sharpest medical diagnosticians or the most prolific artists and writers.

But, uncontrolled, AI also poses nightmarish dangers to society: producing hyper-realistic fake speeches or videos of events that never happened, AI-driven warfare spilling over into the civilian sphere, or, most disturbingly, a future where the most significant decisions about the fate of the world are not made by humans.

While I had some familiarity with the subject of AI, I was excited to develop a well-rounded understanding of it from this title.

“The Age of AI: And Our Human Future” is dense with explanations, predictions, opinions and fears about AI, and is also encased in difficult and, at times, repetitive language. It lays out rough outlines for national and global committees that should determine AI’s uses and limitations across industry, academia and governments, in what feels like a stream of consciousness narrative.

Because this book is based on actual conversations between the authors, it felt at times as if I were being hit with the conclusions of many hours of thought without the time to reason through it all myself and keep pace.

But the abstruse wording and repetitive statements weren’t the biggest obstacles to getting through this book. Instead, it was the deeply thought-provoking points made by the authors that regularly sent me spiraling into reflection. The authors did succeed in what was perhaps their primary objective: to instill in the reader a sense of the significance of AI and the need for discourse about it.

This book ambitiously attempts to walk the reader through as comprehensive a summary of AI as can be fit in 143 pages. This book has convinced me that AI will span far beyond the domain of science and technology, infiltrating every aspect of society and changing nearly everything about the way we live our lives.

Although I expected to come away from the reading somewhat satisfied on the subject, I was left asking more questions than I could find answers for in these pages. Though it was my first book on the subject, it will certainly not be the last.

This book may not be the singular text about artificial intelligence that I was hoping for, but it’s worth reading nonetheless. It’s a guidebook for the kind of considerations we should be having about AI: how it will impact the economy, law, warfare, diplomacy and what it will mean to be human in a world dominated by nonhuman intelligence.

At its core, this book is meant to start a conversation — perhaps what will soon be “the” conversation. As a new, AI-driven epoch of human existence looms on the horizon, this is a subject everyone needs to take the time to familiarize themselves with — the sooner, the better. To that end, one need not look further than “The Age of AI: And Our Human Future” to do just that.

Rancho Santa Fe Review

Rancho santa fe review | a future of hope choice must be made in author’s new novel set in 2050.

Author David Brin

Even though David Brin identifies himself as a science fiction writer, he declares the genre has been misnamed.

It should be called “speculative history,” the local author and futurist said before a book signing for his newest work, “Existence,” last week at Mysterious Galaxy Books in Kearny Mesa. “These are stories about the effects of change on individuals, peoples and generations.”

He circles around a lot of topics in his interviews, from the state of science education — we’re not as bad off as everyone thinks, he posits — to what “artsy types” think of science fiction — they “despise it.”

Be certain, though, that his interest in science fiction began with a love of history and he’s quite willing to talk about either or both.

While he says only 10 percent of science fiction writers are scientists — and he’s one — all science fiction writers devour history.

As a man who holds an undergraduate degree in astrophysics from Cal Tech, a master’s in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in space physics from UCSD, he brings a unique understanding of science and technology to his craft. Adding adventure and imagination, he has written more than a dozen novels of his own, collaborated with other authors on more, and published graphic novels, young adult novels and nonfiction as well as short fiction. One book, “The Postman” was made into a film starring Kevin Costner in 1997.

Writing was his “passionate hobby,” he said, noting that he figured he would publish a novel every five or six years while teaching and doing research. But, he added, “civilization had other plans for me … I had success at storytelling and that became the tail that wagged the dog.”

A third generation writer, Brin has won awards from Hugo International Science Fiction, the American Library Association and Nebula. (His daughter seems to be continuing the family tradition as she is now a journalism major who has designs on following in his footsteps. Brin and his wife, Cheryl, who he followed to Paris when she was doing her post-doctoral degree, also have two sons.)

More recently, with UCSD’s Sheldon Brown, Brin helped formulate the proposal for the newly launched Arthur C. Clarke Center for the Human Imagination and will be involved as the new center at UCSD moves forward. While his role hasn’t been determined, he joked that he will be “a grand old fart adviser.”

Brown was UCSD’s director of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts until he was named to head the Clarke Center which aims “to develop, catalyze, and be a global resource for research, teaching, and value-added initiatives inspired by the singularly imaginative, multi-disciplinary legacy of Sir Arthur Clarke.”

Using all of the resources of the university — and with the support of all of its deans — the focus will be on collaborations around the world in technology, education, engineering, health, science, industry, environment, entertainment and the arts.

Brin, who blogs regularly, calls himself the go-to guy on extraterrestrial life and says he’s “best known as a ‘futurist’” who comments plausibly and entertainingly about trends in technology and society. He’s been featured at TEDxDelMar, addressing the question “Is Outer Space Still Part of the Dream,” has spoken to NASA scientists and, on July 14, he’ll be part of a panel at Comic-Con on “Traveling the Spacetime Continuum” and signing his recent work, “Existence.”

His first new novel in nine years, “Existence” is set in 2050. His website, which includes an illustrated trailer to the work with stunning art by Patrick Farley, teases readers: “Billions of planets may be ripe for life, even intelligence. So where is Everybody? Do civilizations make the same fatal mistakes over and over? Might we be the first to cross the minefield, evading every trap to learn the secret of Existence?”

He calls himself a hopeful person. “Only by studying history can you overcome cynicism and realize how amazing this trip has been,” he said. “Think about it. Our ancestors struggled hard. The best of them dreamed we’d be better off than they were. … At this rate our grandchildren may be amazing but we’ve somehow got to get across the danger zone of the next 20 years.”

That’s part of the message he’s trying to convey in “Existence” and why he picked the time frame for the novel.

In it, he said, “the prospects are neither all gloomy nor all sunny.”

Adding, “We’ve been very smart between now and 2050 at keeping disasters barely contained … then something new arrives that forces us to finally make up our minds about whether to deliberately choose a future of hope.”

With his wife on hand at last week’s book signing, the audience of more than 50 fans who seemed more like friends than fans was ready to hear some details as Brin basked in their attention.

“It’s nice to be back,” he said.

What is Project 2025? The Presidential Transition Project explained.

The detailed plan to dismantle and reconstruct the government laid out by  conservative groups  known as the 2025 Presidential Transition Project has critics up in arms over its " apocalyptic " and " authoritarian " nature.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., led an effort to create the more than 900-page  "Mandate for Leadership,"  published in April 2023, reimagining the executive branch and presented a plan to overhaul several federal government agencies, including the FBI, for the country's next conservative president to follow.

More: Project 2025 head says 'second American Revolution' will be 'bloodless if the left allows'

According to the Project's website, the playbook provides a governing agenda and a lineup of people ready to implement it to "rescue the country from the grip of the radical Left." It includes a domestic and  foreign policy  agenda, a list of personnel, training, and a 180-day playbook.

"It is not enough for conservatives to win elections," Project 2025  said on its website . "With the right conservative policy recommendations and properly vetted and trained personnel to implement them, we will take back our government."

Project 2025's Director is  Paul Dans , who served as the U.S. Office of Personnel Management chief of staff in former President Donald Trump's administration. Although it mentions Trump by name, the handbook does not directly assume the Republican party's presumptive nominee will be the one to carry out its agenda.

What is in Project 2025?

The mandate attacks several policies that former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden instituted, including  student loan forgiveness  and  Obamacare . It simultaneously calls for expanded executive power for the commander-in-chief while criticizing what Project 2025 members perceive as overreaches by the Biden administration.

"Presidents should not issue mask or vaccine mandates, arbitrarily transfer student loan debt, or issue monarchical mandates of any sort," the plan reads. "Legislatures make the laws in a republic, not executives."

The playbook calls for the reinstatement of a  Trump executive order  augmenting a president's power to hire and fire federal officials by replacing civil servants with political appointees throughout government.

It also seeks to repeal aspects of the  Affordable Care Act , urge the Food and Drug Administration to reverse the  approval of abortion pills , and further empower Immigration and Customs Enforcement to  deport undocumented immigrants .

The plan also specifically addresses LGBTQ+ issues and attacks "radical gender ideology." In addition to calling for an end to the Department of Education, it suggests legislation that would forbid educators from using transgender students' names or pronouns without written permission from their guardians. It also appears to oppose same-sex marriage and gay couples adopting children by seeking to "maintain a biblically based, social science-reinforced definition of marriage and family."

Project 2025 generates concern

Project 2025 has received substantial criticism from Democrats, including  Representative Jasmine Crockett , D-Texas, who called out the controversial plan during a congressional hearing last month.

"I don't know why or how anybody can support Project 2025," Crockett said. "In the United States of America, dictatorships are never funny, and Project 2025 is giving the playbook for authoritarianism as well as the next dictator to come in."

Progressive Democrat U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts called it a "far-right manifesto" in a  post on TikTok . The Biden campaign captioned a video detailing Project 2025, stating it "needs more attention."

CONCERNING THE FUTURE OF SOULS: 99 Stories of Azrael , by Joy Williams

Last month, at the Vatican, Pope Francis told a group of visiting comedians that it was OK to laugh at God, so long as the joke didn’t hurt the feelings of believers or the poor. I grew up Roman Catholic; half of me was staggered by this news. The other half of me wondered if the pope had been dipping into the fiction of Joy Williams .

Williams is the daughter of a Congregational minister. Her work is shot through with flinty and anarchic varieties of religious experience. In her last book of short fiction, “ Ninety-Nine Stories of God ” (2016), the Lord wandered the planet as if he were Jeff Bridges in a floppy bathrobe in “The Big Lebowski.”

He drove a pink Jeep Wagoneer. He stood in line to get a shingles shot. He was a naturalist who thought Home Depot was for wimps. He attended a hot-dog eating contest and called it “the stupidest thing I’ve ever witnessed.” He longed to be in a demolition derby. He probably has $10 on the Mets this weekend.

Blasphemous? In Williams’s fiction, nearly everything she values is a) too important to take entirely seriously and b) fair game for sharp but mostly playful abuse. The abuse is proof of her love. Don DeLillo said it in “Underworld,” and I feel it keenly in my own life: The highest currency that can pass between certain friends is “the stand-up scorn that carries their affections.”

Williams, who turned 80 this year, resembles Mark Twain in the wildcat nature of her literary scorn. One of the best things about Twain’s nonfiction is that he will stop everything and criticize the hell out of a bird or a plant, deliver an absolute drubbing, simply because it happens to be in front of him. Thus, in “A Tramp Abroad,” “the average ant is a sham,” cats have lousy grammar, the Edelweiss flower is beastly ugly and so on. His original rants are longer and vastly more fun. On audio, these will make you stop in the street and bend over, laughing like a fool.

Williams writes with more feeling about nature than any writer I know — or, at least, with more feeling than any writer whose preciousness doesn’t make me want to refund my lunch into my shirt pocket — but like Twain she knows there are more weirdos in the natural world than Audubon can count. When a fern appears in her fiction, for example, it will sit there looking “crazier than hell.” It won’t “have much of an emotional life because it is insane.” Kids? They’re “fickle little nihilists.”Williams and Twain: They’re name-calling peas in a very small American pod.

Power book ii: ghost season 4 episode 5 review: ego death.

made in future book review

All midseason finales don't need to go out with a massive cliffhanger. Or even a bang.

They just need to do enough to leave you wanting more.

Did the LAST Power Book II: Ghost midseason finale pull that off? Yes and no.

Getting The Bag - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

This season of Power Ghost has been more hit-and-miss than we're used to, but even with some hours that weren't the best, the series continues to be one of the most entertaining on television.

And that's exactly what this hour was.

It may not have ended on a crazy cliffhanger that will keep us guessing until the show returns this fall, but it didn't need to. We'll still be coming back to see how this story finishes.

I actually walked away excited that no lives were left in the balance or some crazy secret was dropped (though there were certainly some of those through the hour), but instead, we now get to ponder what Tariq will do next.

It's a common question Tariq asks himself, but the stakes are much higher now that he's about to be someone's father.

Tariq's been floundering since Brayden helped him escape that death trap Noma and the Tejadas set up for him, and even though he and Brayden have started a new business venture, he's half in and half out with all the various things going on in his life.

Serious Tariq - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

The greatest trick the Power Universe ever played was making me root and care about Tariq St. Patrick.

I want him to get his revenge on those who've set out to destroy everything he built. I want him to find a way to get to the top, protect the people he loves, and live a long life.

But at the same time, it seems like such an unattainable goal. And is that even what Tariq truly deserves after the life he's lived?

Tariq waking up after the events of Power Book II: Ghost Season 4 Episode 4 hungover and getting blown off by Anya felt like it could have been a rock bottom moment, but Tariq turned it into a learning experience.

Never one to stay down too long, he was onto the next thing, and isn't that the difference between not only him and Brayden but him and so many others?

Not everyone can go through life, have bad things happen to them, and just get up and keep going like it doesn't affect them. That's not a reality for many people, and it doesn't make Tariq better than anyone because he takes his licks and pretends like they didn't happen.

Shots All Around - PB S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

Tariq has been and continues to be very selfish, and at the end of the day, it's Tariq's way or no way. There's a reason that man is alone, not a friend or person in his corner, outside Brayden.

Tariq's problems are always the biggest. They're always the most important. And it's high time someone told him about himself, and I'm glad it was Brayden, even if I was nodding along with both of them when they were getting their whacks in.

Brayden's done a lot for Tariq, but Brayden has also messed up. He's made messes Tariq has had to clean up. He wanted out not long ago and came back for Tariq, but you can't blame Tariq for having doubts about how invested Brayden truly is in what they're doing.

Related: TV's Best Hate-Driven Relationships

Tariq's inability to see beyond his life is one of his worst qualities because it gives him such a narrow view of the world. He doesn't know how to be a friend to anyone or a romantic partner.

You can say he kind of knows how to be a son, but I couldn't type that out without scrunching my face up because, duh.

One thing you can appreciate about Brayden, though, is that he and Tariq can have a knockout, heavyweight fight, but the second Tariq was in trouble, Brayden went running.

Cane Is Ready - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

Brayden has such terrible taste in women. It's truly a crime, and Elle seems like a nice girl who's been dealt a lot, but what we don't do in 2024 is drug people in an attempt to get them to loosen up.

What are we doing here, Elle?

It was nice of them to give Elle some depth beyond 'the girl who Brayden is sleeping with and is slowly getting him hooked on coke,' but they lost me with this little plot, which put Brayden in a terrible place.

You would think he'd be a little less trusting after Riley, but that's just who Brayden is at his core. He wears his heart on his sleeve, but he should recognize he doesn't know this girl like that.

Tariq's acid trip didn't cause too much damage to Tariq, thankfully, but it did something that nothing else in his life has done; it made him finally see he's more like his father than he thought.

Everyone in his life and beyond has known that, but Tariq has attached so much venom and disdain to Ghost that he's never allowed himself to see their similarities and embrace them.

Brayden Faces Off - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

He's reached a crossroads where he either needs to get out, turn the page, and find something else for his life. Or he can lock in and ascend to heights he's never reached to be better than even Ghost was.

It was an interesting image seeing Tariq versus Tariq while he was tripping on acid, two versions of the same man.

Tariq's decision to take that fever dream as a sign he needed to move more toward Ghost 2.0 than away led me to one conclusion and one conclusion only: whether now or in the future, he'll ultimately succumb to the same fate as his pops.

Related: 13 Characters Who Broke Our Hearts by Embracing the Dark Side

Tariq becoming the apex predator would mean him going full-throttle, with no remorse, setting the whole goddamn world on fire and doing it with a smile on his face.

Is he capable of that? He shot his father, so yeah, he's certainly capable, but we've seen variations of this story before. If he makes it, he'll be on top, and he'll be all alone.

Diana's decision to have the baby wasn't shocking. It was what she wanted, but it felt like she was looking for that one reason to support her decision. But the Tariq of it all makes things so messy.

Diana Looks Out - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

These two were trying to kill one another a few hours ago, and now they're splitting ultrasound photos? Not to mention Tariq lying to her face about Salim.

It was shocking to hear Tariq come out and tell Diana his plans to be the big dog in town as if that was supposed to impress her or excite her after all the loss she'd recently incurred and the danger she'd been in.

These two trying to navigate their relationship with zero trust or affection and then successfully co-parent in the future seems like something that will never happen.

It makes you wonder whether Tariq will rethink his plans for total bloodshed. Hint: the answer is no.

Diana was not the only Tejada with a choice to make. Monet decided that she was finally ready to step up, put on her world's best mom hat, and reunite a family that had been fractured beyond repair.

Power shows can be so comical in the way they have people ready to fight to the death and then turn around soon after that and have them talking about the depth of familial bonds and the need for everyone to put aside attempted murder and come together for the greater good.

Monet Talks - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

Monet thought a good meal would get her three kids to forget about the past 24 hours, and it was about as naïve as it gets.

Cane: I'm not gonna be sitting here eating french toast with motherfuckers who tried to kill you, Ma. Monet: Look, a lot of shit has happened. But we can fix it. I know we can. We just need a reset, man. We family, ya'll. And if I can forgive, Cane, you can too. Cane: I could, but I won't. Permalink: I could, but I won't. - PG S04E05

Everything Monet is doing feels too little too late. The damage has been done, and she's dealing with adults with their own lives and ambitions. They no longer feel the pressure and need to conform to their mother's wishes.

Cane's got his own thing going on. Diana's been saying she's out and being with child, there's less insistence she put herself in danger. And Dru, well, he's always had one foot out the door, and he's ready to move the hell on now.

Related: Power Book II: Ghost Season 4 Episode 3 Review: Birthright

Props to Dru for being the one person to hold Monet accountable. He's said what he's felt, and he's made her work for his forgiveness, which was something he didn't have to extend to her in the first place.

It feels like if Monet doesn't say family at least ten times an episode, she's going to glitch or something. She's been saying 'family first' and 'everything I do is for the family' for so long that it's lost all meaning.

It was simply what she told herself to justify her actions when the truth was that most things she did were for her. And it started when she put that gun in Cane's car seat.

Dru Listens - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

Much like Tariq, she had a decision to make about her next move, and just like Tariq, she chose the business, though she sprinkled in some talk about the business being second to family that I don't believe for a second.

In watching all of these shows, a common theme is everyone born into the life or existing in a world where the game is their life, unable to escape it, and most don't even want to.

Monet doesn't want to leave the business because it's all she knows. It's scary to start over. We watched Tariq have to sweep a floor with disgust for a single shift and then balk at the idea of a life spent in don't honest work.

Even if her intentions are in the right place, this belief that Monet can balance the business and her family in some new way feels misguided at best. And it got off to the worst start possible.

For all those who knew there was something majorly off about Detective Carter, I'm currently slow-clapping in your honor because not only is that man DIRTY, but he's also unwell.

Carter has been laser-focused on Tariq and Monet, and while he appeared to be after them because he wanted to rid the streets of drugs and make New York a safer place, he had a rather twisted agenda.

Detective Carter On The Move - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

Dirty cops is no shocker, but Carter and his task force trying to hide behind some morality code was a surprise and spoke to Carter's issues, which appear to stem from the resounding grief he feels from his wife's murder.

But that's purely a speculation because there's still so much we don't know about what happened there. Was he always dirty? Did said dirtiness have anything to do with his wife's death?

Or did her death turn him into this vigilante policeman? And how the hell did he get all these other officers on board?

Related: Power Book II: Ghost Season 4 Episode 2 Review: To Thine Own Self

It's pretty sick when you think about it. Skimming from the drug dealers whom you let do what they do but threaten to kill or arrest if they dare to kill the wrong person is a wild proposition.

My task force decides who gets to operate in this city. You stay in line, keep innocents out of harm's way, you can continue. But you go rogue, you will go to prison. Or we kill you. Carter Permalink: My task force decides who gets to operate in this city. - PG S04E05

Monet and Dru had no choice but to agree, but Carter's cockiness was next level for a man who had just laid all his cards out on the table in front of a woman who would now make it her sole mission to bring him down.

Of all the ways I saw this Carter storyline going, this was not one of them. He's crooked, sick, dangerous—all of the above.

Ready To Fire - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

So, as we head into the final five episodes, we've got Tariq on a mission to become the biggest drug dealer in the city. Monet and Dru working for the police. And we didn't even discuss Noma and Cane, who made an enemy out of 90s Mike Tyson, er, Zion.

All these stories should converge at some point, even if they currently seem like three completely separate entities.

Power has always been masterful at connecting the dots and making the convoluted make perfect sense.

It's what makes it one of the best.

Everything Else You Need To Know

  • Noma has been walking around unchecked for far too long, and even though Zion doesn't feel like a credible enemy right now, it was nice to see her sweat a little from something other than Tariq.

Date Night - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

  • It was hilarious that it only took Noma one party to clock Tariq and Brayden's business. It was such a smart plan, but it wasn't stealthy at all.
  • They still don't know what to do with Davis, but having him be some kind of Noma informant while also sleeping with her is one of the more intriguing things heading into the end of the season.

Related: Power Book II: Ghost Season 4 Episode 1 Review: I Don't Die Easy

  • Speaking of Noma and Davis, Cane is about to be UPSET. And an upset Cane with a bruised ego is liable to do anything!
  • Is Dru Tejada, yes, Dru Tejada, slowly becoming the MVP of this season? He's standing on his business and is easily the one doing the least annoying things thus far.
  • I really appreciated that talk about Sickle Cell between Elle and Brayden.

fight Night - PG S04E05 - Ego Death - Power Book II: Ghost

  • Tariq and Brayden will never beat the Ghost and Tommy allegations. Zion is out here calling Brayden' tiny Tommy,' and these two are screaming at each other and coming up with a plan to take over the world the next day. That's brotherhood in Power land.
  • I don't care one way or the other about Kamaal, but I did not appreciate how that little task force talked to him. Now that I know they're dirty, I hope he's the one who takes them down.

Boo split seasons! I may understand them, but I don't have to like it!

The good news is that more Power Ghost is coming to Starz , but the bad news is that we will have to wait for it!

Well, while we do, leave your comments about the hour and the first half of the final season below so we can discuss! I'll see you in the fall!

Biden digs in despite lapses, alarming polls, doubts: 6 takeaways from ABC interview

made in future book review

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden  dismissed concerns about his mental fitness Friday and rejected calls to drop out of the 2024 election as he pushed back at detractors in perhaps the most consequential television interview of his presidency.

Biden, in an interview with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos that aired on primetime television, reiterated he won't withdraw from the race following his disastrous debate last week, downplaying his performance as a "bad night" because of fatigue and a "really bad cold."

The 22-minute interview was Biden's first on television since his dismal debate performance in which the incumbent president struggled to complete thoughts, finish sentences and rebut claims made by former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

Here are six takeaways from the interview, which was taped during Biden's campaign visit Friday afternoon to Madison, Wisconsin.

Biden says he won't even entertain exiting race

Biden dug in as Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed Biden whether he would end his candidacy if Democratic congressional leaders came to him to convince him he can't defeat Trump in November.

"Well, if the Lord Almighty comes down and tells me to do that, I might do that," Biden said, later insisting that his Democratic allies aren't going to demand that he exit.

"I'm not going to answer that question. It's not going to happen," Biden said. "I've not seen what you're proposing."

Biden said he's seen concerns about his candidacy "from the press," but not heard it from most Democrats.

Five Democratic members of Congress have publicly called for Biden to drop out of the race. The Washington Post reported Friday that U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., is working on assembling a group of Democratic senators to ask Biden to exit the presidential race

Biden won't commit to a cognitive test

Biden said he has not taken a neurological or cognitive test to measure his mental fitness, nor would he commit to an independent medical evaluation that includes such an exam.

"No, no one said I had to. They said I'm good," Biden said, adding that he takes a cognitive test "every single day" given the demands and responsibilities of being president.

More: Biden refuses to say whether he'd take independent cognitive test and make results public

"Everything I do, I have that test," Biden said. "Not only am I campaigning but I'm running the world."

Asked again whether he would take a cognitive test to assure Americans of his health, Biden again refused.

"Watch me. There's a lot of time left in this campaign. It's over 125 days."

Biden says he doesn't believe polls showing him losing

Despite Trump leading Biden in virtually all national polls and in most battleground states Biden said he doesn't believe he's currently losing.

"I don't buy that," Biden said. "All the pollsters I talk to tell me it's a toss-up."

Biden also said he doesn't buy that his approval rating is as low as 36%, which some polls have found.

"I don't believe that's my approval rating. That's not what our polls show," he said.

Even before Biden's disastrous debate, Democrats were growing more nervous about a second Trump presidency because of polls showing Biden consistently behind the former president.

When asked whether he's being honest with himself about his ability to beat Trump, Biden responded: "Yes, yes, yes, yes.''

"Look, I remember them telling me the same thing in 2020 − the polls show I can't win," Biden said.

At the end of his interview, Biden gave an answer that is sure to upset his detractors on how he would feel in January if Trump wins the election.

“I’ll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did as good a job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about," Biden said.

'I'm still in good shape,' Biden insists

Biden insisted that he's in good enough physical and mental condition to serve in the White House another four years.

"Can I run a hundred in 10 flat? No. But I'm still in good shape," said Biden, who spoke clearer than he did in the debate but still sounded hoarse at times.

Biden said he is not frail or in worse condition than when he entered the White House three and a half years ago.

"I wouldn't be running if I didn't think I did," he said about whether he can serve another four years, which would make him 86 years old at the end of his term.

Stephanopoulos asked if Biden was being honest with himself.

"Yes, I am. George, the last thing I want to do is not being able to meet that," Biden said.

Biden says he hasn't watched the debate

Biden said he hasn't watched his heavily criticized debate, which was now eight days ago.

"I don't think I did − no," Biden said.

Biden said his performance was "nobody's fault but mine," and that he prepared for it by going over material in "explicit detail," like he does for meetings with foreign leaders with his National Security Council.

Biden said he had trouble keeping up with all of Trump's lies.

Biden was asked about recent comments from former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling it a "legitimate question" to ask whether Biden's debate performance was a "bad episode" or a sign of a more serious "condition."

"It was a bad episode," Biden said. "No indication of a more serious condition. I was exhausted. I didn't listen to my instincts in terms of preparing. I had a bad night."

Biden says recent travel made him tired because of 'really bad cold'

Biden was pressed how could have been tired from recent overseas travel − which he has claimed − when he returned to the United States 12 days before the debate took place.

"Because I was sick. I was feeling terrible," he said, adding that he felt so bad that he had his doctors test him for COVID and other viruses, which turned out negative. "They just said I had a really bad cold."

Biden spent the six days leading up to the debate at the Camp David presidential retreat preparing with top White House aides.

The temporality of expat life comes up against victimhood, privilege, maternity, marriage, and death as each of these women’s struggles become surprisingly interwoven in this web of desire.

Expats, starring Nicole Kidman, Ji-young Yoo, and Jack Huston, is streaming on A mazon Prime Video .

The Peasants

The feuds, scandals, and romance of a late-19th-century Polish village are at the center of The Peasants ’ dramatic narrative. When a young woman is made the bride of a widower and the village’s wealthiest farmer, her life is uprooted with comic but tragic fallout. Playing out in four parts, each corresponding to the four seasons, she finds herself wrestling with conflicting desires as the farmer’s eldest son and other leading men in the community catch her eye. Embedded in the landscape of rural Poland, The Peasants chronicles how village gossip and deep-rooted patriarchy collide.

The Peasants, starring Robert Gulaczyk, Sonia Mietielica, and Miroslaw Baka, is available on VOD .

The Tiger's Apprentice

Laurence Yep’s action-adventure fantasy novel is the first in The Tiger’s Apprentice trilogy, which charts a young boy’s life changing forever when he meets Mr. Hu, a talking tiger, and discovers he has magical powers. In this world where animals can take human form, the young boy joins up with a gang of creatures as they face off against an evil force trying to obtain an ancient talisman that the guardians protect.

The Tiger’s Apprentice, starring Leah Lewis, Michelle Yeoh, and Henry Golding, is streaming on Paramount+ .

The Passionate Epicure

Set in 1885, but plodding over 20 years of slow-burn romance, cook Eugénie and Dodin, the gourmet she works for, are a dream team in concocting dishes that stun anyone who has a bite. Their shared love of food brings them together, but when Eugénie confesses to not wanting to marry Dodin, he decides to enter the kitchen and cook for Eugénie for the first time. The character of Dodin is based on Rouff’s character Dodin-Bouffant, which is loosely inspired by the infamous bachelor Anthelme Brillat-Savarin.

The Taste of Things, starring Juliette Binoche, Benoît Magimel, and Emmanuel Salinger, is available on VOD .

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover has become BookTok royalty , and so a film adaptation of It Ends With Us has been much anticipated. The 2016 novel follows fresh graduate Lily, who moves to a new city and falls in love, but her newfound romance faces unforeseen challenges when her first love arrives on her doorstep. Memories of her abusive home resurface and Lily faces patterns of violence that mirror her youth as her world is turned upside down.

It Ends With Us, s tarring Blake Lively , Justin Baldoni, and Jenny Slate, has been pushed back to August 9.

Frankenstein

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has been the subject of endless adaptation, but this new, loosely inspired narrative offers a renewed focus on the subject of rebuilding a man. Lisa Frankenstein is set in 1989 and follows a teenage goth reanimating a corpse from the Victorian era to make him the perfect boyfriend via her broken tanning machine. A coming-of-age romance brews between this bizarre but charming duo as they embark on a murderous journey for life and happiness.

Lisa Frankenstein, starring Kathryn Newton , Cole Sprouse, and Liza Soberano, is streaming on Peacock .

The Never Game

Colter Shaw is like if Bear Grylls became a private investigator; Colter is a lone survivalist who tracks down all sorts of missing people across the country. But his hardest case yet comes when three people are kidnapped across California, and there’s a ticking clock on their lives. However, Colter is simultaneously facing struggles closer to home that require his urgent attention. This investigation kick-starts a domino effect of hair-raising proportion.

Tracker, starring Justin Hartley, Robin Weigert, and Abby McEnany, is streaming on Paramount+ .

Spider-Man and Madame Web

In the depths of New York City, Cassandra “Cassie” Webb is a paramedic who begins to develop clairvoyant abilities. In the comics, Cassie doesn’t actively fight villains, but it seems as though the forthcoming film will offer a creative reimagining if the action-packed trailer is anything to go by. Cassie is tasked with protecting three young women who unexpectedly become the targets of a deadly foe.

Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Celeste O’Connor, is available on VOD .

The Walking Dead

This spinoff of The Walking Dead is set to reunite two characters from the original series; the focus will be on Rick and Michonne after the events of The Walking Dead season 11. The Ones Who Live is set to tackle the pair’s tumultuous love story. As Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, they face a war against the dead — or perhaps the living. With their circumstances constantly changing, they’re in a hunt for who they really are, together and apart.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, starring Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, and Pollyanna McIntosh, is streaming on AMC+ .

Shogun

Set in 17th-century feudal Japan, Shōgun follows an unconventional trio as they make their own way through a highly nefarious political landscape while trying to reach the top. These characters include English sailor John Blackthorne, who rises up the ranks to become a samurai; Lord Toranaga, who faces threatening political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a highly skilled individual whose unfavorable family history leaves her with a lot to prove.

Shōgun, starring Cosmo Jarvis, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Anna Sawai, is streaming on Hulu .

Dune

This new chapter in the Dune universe continues to adapt Frank Herbert’s acclaimed sci-fi epic as the clairvoyant Paul Atreides finds himself drawn to the Fremen people. He’s on course to securing his “destiny” as Kwisatz Haderach, a messiah figure. However, first, his loyalty is tested as he faces a war against House Harkonnen, an enemy of House Atreides after they conspired against them. And most importantly, more Zendaya is expected for Dune: Part Two .

Dune: Part Two, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson, is now playing in theaters.

Over the last two decades, the disruption brought about by data and technology has created a wide chasm between marketing strategy and what really works in the marketplace. Made in Future is a groundbreaking new book that seeks to recast marketing from a white sheet, with an incisive view of how vast changes in media, content, influences and people's expectations have come together to write a new story of marketing. The book challenges a lot of the accepted wisdom of the past, yet is brutal where the hype is ahead of substance. In the process, it offers an alternative journey that is conceptually whole, makes you think and helps you follow it all up with pragmatic decisions.
