5 routes to getting a Doctorate

While most of those studying for a PhD take the PhD by thesis pathway, there are five viable routes to achieving a Doctorate, with both full-time and part-time options available

PhD by thesis

This is the most common means of getting a Doctorate. Over the three or four years of research at university, your PhD supervisor will support you as you aim to produce a thesis based on your research proposal .

A thesis is typically 60,000-90,000 words in length - although this can vary between institutions. For instance, the University of Glasgow's College of Social Sciences expects a thesis to be 70,000 to 100,000 words including references, bibliography and appendices, while the University of Cambridge has set an upper limit of 80,000 words.

Once completed, you'll need to defend your PhD thesis in front of a panel of examiners during your viva voce .

Doctorate by publication

This route involves submitting previously published work - such as books, book chapters and journal articles, which together form a coherent body of work and show evidence of an original contribution to a particular field of study.

The PhD by publication route is often taken by mid-career academics that haven't had the opportunity to undertake a standard Doctorate degree.

Generally, a minimum of five to eight published pieces are required, but this varies between institutions and depends on their length. The published work will be assessed to the same rigorous standards as a traditional PhD by thesis.

You must also provide a written supporting statement, which typically ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 words.

For instance, the University of Westminster asks for a commentary of 5,000 words (science and technology subjects) or 10,000 words (arts, social sciences and humanities). On the other hand, Queen Margaret University Edinburgh requires 12,000 to 15,000 words on the rationale and theoretical context for the portfolio of published work.

The work will then be presented to an academic committee. A supervisor will assist you with selecting which publications to submit, as well as guidance on the supporting statement.

Some universities accept only their own graduates for a PhD by publication, while others restrict this route to their academic staff. In general, you should have graduated from your first degree at least seven years ago to be eligible.

For example, The University of Manchester has published its own Guidance for the PhD By Published Work , with eligibility only extending to current members of staff.

Professional Doctorate

This type of Doctorate includes a significant taught component and a smaller research project, and is geared primarily towards current professionals in vocational sectors such as:

• engineering and manufacturing
• teaching and education .

Professional Doctorates are often taken on a part-time basis and can last between two and eight years. Like their standard PhD counterparts, they usually begin in October or January.

While you won't typically be looking to get an academic job , your research is expected to contribute to theory as well as professional practice. Projects often revolve around a real-life issue that affects your employer.

Several professional Doctorates, such as the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy), are accredited by a professional body - for instance, the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and The British Psychological Society (BPS) - and may also lead to a professional qualification .

Common titles for graduates of professional Doctorate degrees include:

• Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
• Doctor of Education (EdD)
• Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
• Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Unlike many professional Doctorates, the EngD is typically offered as a full-time course and is aimed at young engineering graduates with little or no professional experience.

Integrated PhD

This four-year qualification, also known as the New Route PhD, involves studying a one-year research Masters degree (MRes) before progressing onto a three-year PhD.

Offered by a select number of universities across the UK, integrated PhDs are supported by the government and the British Council through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) .

The integrated PhD involves a combination of taught materials, practical experience and advanced research. This allows you to learn subject-specific methodologies, while building the transferable skills that will enable you to become a leader in your chosen profession.

Institutions can also develop personalised integrated PhD programmes to meet each student's needs. For example, universities may offer you the opportunity to gain a postgraduate certificate (PGCert) in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education - perfect if you're considering a career as a higher education lecturer .

Online/distance learning PhD

As PhDs are based primarily on independent research rather than time spent in lectures and seminars, distance learning has always been a viable route for many Doctoral students.

PhDs by distance learning offered by course providers such as The Open University are therefore a good option to consider if you've got family or work commitments or are an international student - as this gives you the chance to undertake Doctoral research without having to live close to your chosen institution. It's also a suitable mode of study if your subject requires you to be based in a specific location away from the university.

For the most part, you'll be in touch with your supervisor by phone, email or Skype/Zoom. You'll need to bear in mind that even if you opt for this form of research, you'll generally still need to attend university for one or two weeks of each academic year for meetings and to receive research skills training. Your final exam may be undertaken either face-to-face or virtually.

With online PhDs, you can usually register as a full or part-time student. The level of fees you pay varies between institutions - some charge the same as for a standard PhD while others offer a reduced rate.

Check that any funding you plan to apply for is available to distance learning students, as this isn't always the case.

An Integrated Masters with a PhD (iPhD) is a four-year postgraduate level programme that combines a one-year Masters course with a three-year PhD course. They allow students to familiarise themselves with their chosen topic, research methods and academic writing techniques before embarking on their own independent research project. An Integrated Masters with a PhD is particularly popular with international students and students who initially lack specialised knowledge or research skills.

Introduction

An Integrated Masters with PhD, also commonly referred to as either just an Integrated Masters degree or an Integrated PhD, offers a relatively new way to undertake postgraduate training. They maintain the depth and focus of a conventional PhD but offer a more comprehensive doctoral training experience.

Due to their growing popularity, both the number of universities offering these newer forms of PhD and the number of students applying to them has steadily increased.

This page describes what Integrated Masters with PhDs are, who they are for, their advantages and disadvantages, how they differ from conventional PhDs and how they are structured in terms of programme, eligibility and costs. This page is for you if you are considering applying for an integrated course, or simply want to know more about them.

What is an Integrated PhD?

An Integrated PhD is a four-year postgraduate programme. They involve undertaking a one-year Masters degree (MRes or MSc) in your first year, followed by a three-year PhD programme in your second to fourth year. Although the courses run back-to-back, a student can only progress to the second year if they show satisfactory performance in their first year. The one-year Masters and the three-year PhD are considered separately in terms of qualifications; therefore, a student who completes an Integrated PhD will receive both a Masters degree (MRes or MSc) and a PhD as opposed to a single postgraduate qualification.

The aim of an Integrated PhD is to provide a structured approach to doctoral studies, combining advanced PhD research with formal teaching in relevant subjects, research methods and communication skills.

As Integrated PhDs are relatively new compared to more regular doctoral pathways such as stand-alone or MPhil-upgraded PhDs, some professors informally refer to them as ‘New Route PhDs’.

Difference Between Integrated PhD and Regular PhD

The most significant difference between an Integrated PhD and a regular PhD is the addition of the one-year Masters degree at the beginning of the programme. This results in an Integrated PhD typically lasting four years, as opposed to the three years as with regular PhDs.

Integrated PhDs are structured in such a way that they provide students with a broader range of foundational skills than a regular PhD. The first year introduces you to a combination of taught elements, practical experience and advanced research skills. In a regular PhD this mode of teaching is missing as it is assumed you already have this level of knowledge.

The last significant difference between the two types of doctoral programmes is the ‘group’ aspect associated with the Integrated version. Since the Masters programme also includes other students enrolled in Integrated PhDs, you will have a small cohort with whom you will work closely alongside during your studies.

Who are Integrated PhDs suitable for?

Integrated PhDs can be an effective pathway for any student, but they stand out in two situations:

Scenario 1: International Students

The Higher Education system differs across countries , although not by a large amount, enough to where an unfamiliar student may struggle, especially when working independently. An Integrated PhD allows you to adapt to the UK education system by offering a more guided and hands-on approach to your learning and research process before you embark on your three-year research project.

It also has visa benefits. If an international student seeking a Masters degree in the UK already knows they want to follow it up with a PhD, enrolling in an Integrated PhD will save them from having to leave the country and re-apply for a visa after completing their initial postgraduate degree.

Scenario 2: Lack of undergraduate research experience or a relevant Masters degree

An Integrated PhD is useful for students who have academic abilities but lack the necessary background to be considered for a standard-route PhD. This usually occurs under one of three scenarios:

• The applicant is currently an undergraduate student or only holds a Bachelor’s degree,
• The student has a Masters degree, but in a subject only loosely related to the discipline they wish to pursue at doctoral level,
• The student has a relevant Masters degree, but the programme lacked a research focus, leaving the student with underdeveloped research skills.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Integrated PhD

The advantages of an Integrated PhD are strongly linked to the international and inexperienced students they cater for. They offer students an effective means of gaining more confidence, knowledge and research skills in their field before starting a doctorate, and also provide visa benefits to international students who will be undertaking prior postgraduate study.

Integrated PhDs also enable students the possibility of receiving funding for the Masters phase of their programme, as will be explained in more detail in the ‘Funding Opportunities’ section.

Integrated doctorates have no obvious disadvantages, but are generally not suitable for those who already have a Masters degree or well-developed research skills in their chosen field. For these students, the additional costs and duration of an Integrated PhD can be avoided by opting for a traditional PhD for which they will already be suited for.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

The programme of study is naturally divided into two parts, the first for your Masters studies and the second for your PhD studies.

Your Masters studies will usually be divided into 180 module credits, half of which will focus on taught components and the other half on research components.

The modules will be tailored to your course, but they will include a variation of:

Taught modules:

• Subject-specific module – You choose one or two modules from a predefined list of topics within your subject area. Your selection should reflect the research area you want your PhD to focus on.
• English and Communication – Academic language and communication skills will be taught to prepare you for the ‘writing-up’ phase of your doctorate. A common misconception is that this module is similar to the English language requirement tests required to apply to a iPhD. In reality, the module will focus on learning how to critically evaluate research sources, write abstracts, literature reviews and conclusions, communicate in lab-based environments and present to audiences.
• Research Techniques  – You’ll receive in-depth training to familiarise you with the different research methods and analytical techniques available to modern researchers.
• Research Proposal Development  – You’ll work with your intended PhD supervisor to prepare a research proposal for your three-year PhD research project.

Research Modules:

You will carry out one or two small laboratory research projects under supervision for practical experience.

If you complete these modules with satisfactory performance, you will be awarded a Masters degree and will be considered for the following three-year PhD programme.

Each university has its own process for making this consideration, but most invite you to an interview with the supervisor you wish to conduct research with. The interview is used to confirm that you have acquired the specialised knowledge and research skills expected at masters level, and beyond that of someone capable of completing doctoral study.

If your interview goes well, you will be enrolled in your PhD programme. From this point on, your path will be the same as a regular PhD student. During your doctoral phase, you will conduct independent research and laboratory work for two years, followed by a final year of writing up and formally submitting your findings as a thesis. Your thesis, expertise and research competence will be assessed in an oral examination known as a viva. Upon successful completion of your viva, you will be officially awarded a PhD, and your studies will come to an end.

It should be noted that aside from the above, your university may offer optional modules which can equip you with a wide range of transferable skills.

Eligibility

Entry requirements for an integrated masters degree in the UK will vary from university to university, but the typical requirement is an Upper Second Class (2:1) honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted.

If you are an international student and English is your second language, most universities will require proof of your English language proficiency through an exam certificate. It’s best to check directly with the universities which certificate types they accept, but the most common English language qualification requirement is an IELTS certificate, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each category.

The typical annual tuition fee for an Integrated PhD in the UK is £4,712 per academic year for home/EU students (or £2,356 for part-time study) and £19,596 per academic year for international students (or £9,798 for part-time study).

As with all doctoral programmes, there are likely to be additional costs associated with your studies, such as bench fees for lab work, travel costs for collaborating and potential write-up fees for students who need more time to submit their thesis. Funding Opportunities

You can obtain funding for Integrated PhDs in the same way as for regular PhDs. Funding is usually provided by one of the seven UK Research Councils  and research charity organisations such as the  Wellcome Trust ; grants, scholarships and funded opportunities can be found directly in our searchable database .

Funding can either be partial (tuition fees only) or full (tuition fees and living costs). Most funding providers also cover the tuition fee for the Masters degree programme due to being integrated with the PhD, however, you should confirm this on a case-by-case basis.

As with regular PhD funding, the fully-funded opportunities are generally limited to home and EU students.

It’s also worth noting that PhD programmes which include an integrated Masters degree are eligible for a Doctoral Loan , even if you already have a postgraduate Masters degree from a previous university. Applications for Doctoral Loans must be made directly to Student Finance England and you must first be registered for a full doctoral degree. Due to application restrictions, you won’t be able to apply for a separate Postgraduate Masters Loan for the integrated Masters phase of your degree.

Minimum Qualifications for admission to Full-time PhD Programmes

Table 1 defines the minimum qualifications required for admission to full-time Ph. D. programmes at IIT Delhi. Please note:

These are Institute minimum requirements and any Department/Centre/School operating through their DRC/CRC/SRC can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.

This table includes most of the degrees, but each DRC/CRC/SRC is free to specify the qualifications and disciplines acceptable for admission to their programmes.

Candidates in the final year of their programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance until the preceding semester (preceding year if their programmes are year based) would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In any case, all admissions are provisional at first and it is confirmed only after all certificates and previous records are duly checked and verified, a process which may take a few weeks into the starting semester.

Exemptions, relaxations and clarifications:

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (S. No. 1 & 2 in Table 1) is relaxed from 60% to 55% (CGPA relaxed from 6.00 to 5.50).

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (Sr. No.3 in Table 1) is relaxed from 70% to 65% (CGPA relaxed from 7.00 to 6.50).

Qualifying degree performance is computed by aggregating performance over all the semesters/years of the qualifying degree, as per the credit or weightage system approved in the institution/ board where the degree has been completed.

Requirement of qualification in GATE / National Exam is waived for the following categories of applicants:

Currently registered students in Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) pursuing B.Tech./B.E./ Integrated M. Tech/ Integrated M.Sc. Programmes (or any other programme of minimum four year duration, admission to which is on the basis of JEE), who have completed 6 semesters or more, and have CGPA of 8.00 or above (on a 10 point scale). Such students must obtain a CGPA of 8.00 or above at the time of graduation, and before they formally register for the Ph.D. programme (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);

Graduates of CFTIs (in the programmes marked under (i)) with a final graduation CGPA of more than 8.00 (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);

M.A or M.Sc. graduates from IITs with CGPA 8.00 or above.

For purposes of shortlisting, the primary method of evaluation (i.e., CGPA/CPI, or aggregate percentage, whichever is appropriate) followed by the institution where candidate has obtained his/her qualifying degree will be used by IIT Delhi for determining whether the candidate meets the final shortlisting requirements.

For assistantship purposes only (and not for qualification), candidates with M.B.B.S. qualification will be considered equivalent to M. Tech., for admission to Ph.D. programme in Centre for Biomedical Engineering;

For candidates with M.A. degree in English, a 5% relaxation in marks or 0.5 relaxation in CGPA may be permitted for admission to the Ph.D. programme in Humanities and Social Sciences;

Candidates holding an MBA degree are eligible for applying to the Ph.D. programme in the Department of Management Studies.

Managing The Transition From Masters to PhD – Top Ten Tips

Taking The Research Leap

So you have completed your Masters. You enjoyed the experience of postgraduate work. And you’ve caught the bug. You’re going to make the leap to the next research step: the PhD . This article aims to provide ten top tips for managing the transition between a Masters (whether taught or research) and PhD work . It is intended for PhD students in the Humanities and Social Sciences, though some of the tips might also be suitable for Science PhD students. The principle is still the same: taking the next step on your academic journey is not always as tough as it seems.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed

A PhD is generally 80, 000 words. A Masters thesis tends to be around the 20,000 word mark. Starting out on a PhD can, therefore, be truly overwhelming; there seems to be so much time, and so many words, to explore your research topic. Prepare for this by planning short-term goals rather than getting lost in the expanse of the three or four years you have ahead of you.

Go to visit your supervisor

Your supervisor may be someone you already know, or they might be completely new. In any case, they are your first point of contact and—generally—they will have experienced the PhD experience first-hand. Try to arrange regular meetings and ask them to give you some immediate goals to achieve.

Don’t let the scale of the research get you down

A common first step on a PhD is to undertake a form of literature review. This can either be very specific or rather vague and can seem like an unassailable mountain. Concentrate on a specific area or theme at any one time and check in regularly with your supervisor to make sure this research will actually add to the PhD.

Build on the skills gained from your Masters

In some cases, students are able to write a PhD thesis on a broadly similar topic to their Master’s dissertation. Don’t let the work you did then go to waste—draw on the initial Master’s research and indeed the skills, like time management and organisation, essential to completing the Master’s.

Go to support classes and networking events

Meeting fellow first-year PhD students can be a great way to share experiences and develop common research and reading strategies. Networking events are also a great way to get out of the isolation that often accompanies a PhD in the Humanities and Social Sciences, while you can also meet later-stage PhD students who may be working on similar areas.

Write little and often

Master’s often tend to be centred on long essays and a dissertation, which may well deal with very discreet topics. Working on a PhD on one topic necessitates regular writing to keep a track of your research findings and to reflect on the future direction of the project. Writing short pieces, and submitting these to your supervisor to read through, can lead to a narrowing of the research project that will fit the confines of an 80,000-word thesis.

Read the requirements of the degree

It might seem a little odd to suggest reading the regulations about the conferment of a PhD degree when you have already obtained a place to study. Yet looking at the precise requirements of the degree, which generally mention the need for a substantial piece of original work, can focus the early research stages and prevent getting too carried away with interesting, though not particularly helpful, side projects.

Make a point of being collegial

A PhD is frequently seen as a stepping stone to the next stage of an academic career. Regardless of your motivations for studying a doctorate, the big difference between a Master’s and a PhD is your change in status. You are now a researcher and as such, it can be really helpful to seize the opportunities that come with this: opportunities to attend research seminars, the potential of a research mentor or indeed teaching mentor and opportunities to talk less formally with academic staff.

Read up on the upgrade process

Many PhD degree programmes require an upgrade from MPhil to PhD status, normally after the first year of study. Discuss this process in advance with your supervisor and other members of staff (such as the Director of Graduate Studies) to plan in advance and ensure that your work from the first year will be sufficiently focussed to pass the upgrade process. Some institutions have more stringent requirements than others, so it pays to prepare some time in advance.

Enjoy, reflect, respond

The first year of the PhD can pass very quickly; try to enjoy this initial experience and use it as a stepping stone between the very focussed Masters programme and the comparative autonomy to widen your research project. Reflecting on a regular basis—on a blog or through a diary—on the progress made in the first year can be really helpful to show how far your project has developed. And finally, be open and responsive to the suggestions of your supervisor and other academics, at your own institution or elsewhere; their feedback matters more now than it ever did during the Master’s and can really help to shape a successful PhD.

Last year the UK Government confirmed its commitment to R&D through its Innovation Strategy by committing to a budget of £39.8Bn up to 2025. The UK Government is looking to increase expenditure on R&D to 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2027. A further 25,000 PhD students need to be recruited . However, research suggests that not all PhD students remain in universities to build long term academic careers .

Types of careers after completing a PhD

There can be no doubt that the graduate salary premium is very attractive, and the evidence backs this up .

It is hardly surprising as many students want to branch out into other areas once they have completed their PhD. Lots of students return to their home countries to pursue specific careers as academics and in business.

The current academic job market has become increasingly competitive for PhD graduates, which has made it important for you to explore the available options and careers after PhD.

However, there are number of traditional roles in university research that many PhD students are naturally drawn to. These apply in most search intensive universities, so it is normal for PhD students to take up posts in different locations.

M.Sc Ph.D is a three to six years-long dual degree programme that combines MSc and P.hD. This integrated course rewards a student with a double degree. The minimum eligibility criteria for SC/ST candidates are relaxed to pass class over the first class in the qualifying examination.

Additional notes

(a) Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biotechnology/ Chemistry/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences/ Agriculture as applicable to individual discipline, under the 10+2+3/4 system, are eligible to apply to this program.

(b) The minimum requirement for admission to the Integrated Ph D programme is a FIRST CLASS or equivalent Grade in the Bachelor’s degree (as declared by the University) as indicated against each department.

(c) The minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.

(d) Some departments have specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelor’s or 10+2 levels. Candidates have to ensure that they meet these requirements.

(e) Those in the final year of their qualifying examination and awaiting results are also eligible to apply. However, they should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree, including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining.

(f) While the regular PhD program allows an exemption from GATE scores for students with a 4-year degree from a CFTI and with a >= 8.0 CGPA out of 10.0, this is not applicable to Integrated PhD programme.

The short-listing of candidates for in-person(offline) interview is done based on the performance in JAM 2024. Short listing for Physical Sciences is also done based on JEST 2024. The selection of candidates for admission to research programmes is through an interview to be held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. To see Important Dates

Selection – For Biological, Physical and Mathematical Sciences selection will be based on the combined performance in the Test and in Interview. For Chemical Sciences, selection will be based only on the performance in the Interview.

Candidates written the following papers in JAM are eligible for the discipline(s) to which they seek admission.

(a) The interview letters for the short-listed candidates will be sent by email and the same is available on the Applicant’s interface after login to the Admission Portal. Such candidates shall make necessary arrangements for attending the interview. No separate communication will be sent by post. TA (second class sleeper class train fare) will be paid to all the SC/ST candidates who attend the in-person interview.

(b) Candidates called for an interview have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation etc.

(c) Candidates called for an interview should bring with them attested copies of all the transcripts (marks cards from SSLC or equivalent onwards, degree certificates of the qualifying examination, etc.) and produce them before the interview committee, failing which, they will not be interviewed.

(d) Candidates belonging to the SC/ST category should bring the original caste/tribe certificates, issued by competent authorities for purposes of verification.

(e) If you belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) – you must produce the original Income and Asset Certificate issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.

(f) If you belong to OBC-NCL catregory – you must produce the valid OBC-NCL issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.

(g) Candidate belonging to PwD (person-with-disability), KM (Kashmiri-Migrant) categories should produce the originals of the appropriate certificates, issued as per Government of India rules, and Kashmiri Pandit/Kashmiri Hindu Family living in Kashmiri valley should produce Kashmiri valley domicle certificate.

(h) The offer letter for the selected candidates will be posted on Applicant’s interface on IISc Admission portal under Application Status. You can download the offer letter and make necessary arrangements including payment of fees etc. No separate communication will be sent by post.

(i) The candidates admitted to the Integrated Ph D programmes should report to the Institute for completing admission formalities.

(j) At the time of joining, candidates should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc.

(k) Only candidates who produce all the mark sheets and degree certificates (original or provisional) issued by the University Authority will be given regular admission.

(l) Candidates who are awaiting results but have completed all formalities for the award of a degree should produce at the time of joining, a Course-Completion Certificate, issued by the Head of the institution (The Principal/Registrar). Such candidates will be given only provisional admission, which will be regularized on their producing all the marks sheets and degree certificates (original, or provisional) etc., issued by the University Authority on or before 31 October 2024, failing which, the provisional admission stands cancelled.

(m) Candidates who are given provisional admission are eligible for a scholarship only on regularisation of admission (on production of the required documents). They will be paid a scholarship with retrospective effect, i.e., from the date of joining.

NOTE: The results for some of the recent National Entrance Tests, such as GATE/ JAM etc, may not be available at the time of submitting the IISc admissions application. You must enter the available details of these exams, such as your enrolment/ roll number, paper, etc., in the application, but you may leave the score/rank/results blank. You will have the option to update your national entrance results in the application from the main “Application Status” page. You must make this update within 3 days of the results being declared.

                   Hey fellow Engineer!!! I actually am an engineer turned Physicist, After the success of my blog ‘Physics after Engineering’ which is for engineers switching to physics, I thought of building one such for mathematics as well. So, I have checked all the institutes that take engineers into Physics to see if they take engineers into also into mathematics. I’ve listed out all such I found.   I’ve tried my best to include as many as possible but I urge your help to complete the list and keep it updated as I am in the field of physics and not math. Note: All that said, Reader discretion is advised on choosing a mathematics career cause one might not earn as much as one can with an engineering or MBA degree. Ways to study Mathematics after Engineering

These are the major ways for doing Msc or Integrated Ph.D.(or direct Ph.D. in some cases) in Mathematics after Engineering.

         This is an exam conducted by IITs as an entrance test to MSc and an Integrated Ph.D. in IITs and IISC. Along with these, IISERs also take JAM rankers into Integrated Ph.D. and some have started MSc programs too. Actually, there is a small confusion about the eligibility of engineers into IITs through JAM. IITs require 4 semesters with at least one maths(or related) subject in your undergraduate(engineering) coursework. This is a vague statement but the IITs selection process and our (physics aspirants) experiences are even more confusing. So, do read this blog post about the experience of JAM physics rankers in the selection process of IITs to get some idea regarding this confusion (It is written from Physics aspirants’ experiences but is applicable to maths ones as well. Just read ‘maths’ wherever you find ‘physics’ in the post)

IIT Mandi, IISC, and IISERs  have their own application portal , you have to apply to each of them individually through their websites and not through the JAM counseling portal( where you can apply for all IITs in a single place) also, NITs take students through another counseling but none of them take Engineers in M.Sc Maths, NIT Arunachal Pradesh takes Engineers in mathematical physics course but it’s a pretty bad course and people recommend sitting for one more year and preparing for the exams again rather than taking admission there.

Engineers are eligible for lots of courses in ISI which has multiple campuses across the country and the main campus at Kolkata. We are eligible for PG courses M.Math, M.Stat, MS(QE-Quantitative Economics), etc, and also for diploma courses in statistics. Go through their official website for full details.

Universities and Other Entrance tests

I’ve searched the eligibility criteria of almost all major colleges and universities and of them all, These are the ones that I found to give admission to Engineering grads in M.Sc/MA in Mathematics or related fields like applied mathematics. Almost all of the Institutes below don’t have any eligibility criteria for coursework unlike IITs which is a kind of saving grace for those who don’t satisfy the criteria

• This is a Common entrance test for some Central Univs. Central Govt. is trying to bring all the central Univs under this one common entrance exam. (A rant on the Indian govt) Our beloved Govt. of India has been reassuring us time and again how it’s going to underpay and undervalue the researchers and research institutes in the country. With acts like a minimal hike in Ph.D. stipend given after 4 years and intensive protests from scholars, time and again it proves that these conditions are going to prevail for a long time.

Anyway getting back to our topic, the General GRE with a combination of TOEFL or IELTS is necessary for the USA, and having a Maths GRE score is also recommended. As for the European countries, only IELTS is enough (Sending GRE scores might add to your profile but is not mandatory). The tuition fee is zero in some countries like Italy and Germany.

           TIFR is one of the elite research institutes in India if not the best. It has campuses in Mumbai, Banglore, Hyderabad, and Pune. Of them, the ones in Mumbai and in Banglore(ICTS) have mathematics departments. Engineers have to opt for an Integrated Ph.D. paper, Your questions will be from the BSc syllabus but the no.of questions will be rather less, and look for your deep understanding of a concept. Very few people get selected this way. The interviews will also be very thought-provoking. You need to be very strong with your fundamentals.

The best part of this(or any other Ph.D. course) is the stipend. You’ll receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 16,000/- for the first year. At the end of the first year, upon satisfactory performance, the fellowship is enhanced to Rs 25,000/- per month (further raised to Rs 28,000/- after registration for PhD. and annual contingency of Rs. 20,000/-(First Year Int. PhD. students)-Book Grant Only / 32,000/- per year [Ph.D. students and Int. Ph.D. students (Second Year onwards)]

Hi Dushyanth! Any ideas for a MSc. Math course through distance education in Tamil Nadu? I am pursuing my career as a Software Engineer, and would like to do an M.Sc. Math and B.Ed. through distance education for my interest in taking up a government teaching job in Mathematics.

• Applicants who are reside aboard aren’t eligible.
• Applicant’s up to the age of 28 are eligible.
• Applicants must have completed their first-year bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology from a recognized university.

There are four tiers of posts available in scientists, for which you can apply based on your qualifications. They are as follows: 

• Scientist ‘B’ post
• Scientist ‘C’ post
• Scientist ‘D’ post
• Scientist ‘E’ post

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or a three-year diploma in Engineering/ Technology / Computer Science /allied subjects in the required discipline from a recognized institute. Candidates in their final year of a degree in any field are now able to qualify for DRDO 2023. Candidates should ensure that they meet all of the DRDO Eligibility Criteria.

Candidates must have a class 10th diploma or its equivalent from a recognized Board/Institute. In addition, he or she should have a degree from a recognized Industrial Training Institute (ITI).  

If an ITI does not offer the course, an applicant must at least one of the following:

• A 1-year course certificate from a recognized institute 
• A National Trade Certificate in the appropriate discipline  
• A National Apprenticeship Certificate in the required discipline.

Upper Age Limit: Candidates above the age of 28 (as of May 31, 2018) are ineligible for the DRDO test.

Age limit Relaxation:

• SC/ST candidates:  For Scientist ‘B’ Post – 33 Years (5 Years of Relaxation). 
• OBC (non-creamy layer): For Scientist ‘B’ Post – 31 Years (3 Years of Relaxation). 
• The age limit is also relaxed for candidates who are from Armed Forces as per rules.
• Scientist “D”/ “E” –  45 years.
• Scientist “C” – 35 years.

Candidates will find all of the essential dates for DRDO recruitment through GATE 2023 below:

Step 1: Before filling out the application form, you must first enroll. You would be required to input information such as your name, email address, and phone number, among other things.

Step 2: After registering, you can log in again to enter additional information such as demographic information, education qualifications, and contact information.

Step 3: After entering all of your information, you must upload records such as self-assisted certificates, dates of birth, passport-size photos, and so on. Students in their final year would be able to upload their interim or degree certificates at a later date.

Candidates from the General/OBC group would be required to pay Rs 100 online. Fees are waived for SC/ST, PWD, and female applicants.

Follow the steps mentioned below to apply for the Exam

• Step 1: Apply online through the official website of DRDO. ( https://www.drdo.gov.in/ )
• Step 2: Click on the Advertisement Tab, To fill the DRDO online application form 
• Step 3: Enter your Email Id and Password.
• Step 4: Click on the recruitment JRP tab.
• Step 5: You will be directed to the DRDO application form tab.
• Enter your personal details (your name, date of birth. Gender, nationality, etc
• Enter your Educational Qualification details (University’s name, year of passing, etc.
• Enter your contact details (your address, mobile number, etc.) the following details carefully (Make sure you don’t make any  spelling errors in the application form)
• Step 7: Upload all scanned documents required (Educational qualification, mark sheets, etc.) 
• Step 8: Review all the details carefully.
• Step 9: The application fee of INR 100/- (for General and OBC (Male) candidates) is payable only online. Candidates who are SC/ST/Women/PWD are excluded from paying processing fees.
• Step 10: After successfully submitting the application form, candidates must print the application form and mail it to the following address: (To the Director, DRDO, Ministry of Defense, Center for Airborne Systems (CABS), Belur, Yemlur Post, Bengaluru-560037)
• Step 11: Even after completing the online application process, candidates should keep a copy of the online recruitment application (pdf format) and the acknowledgement slip provided for future reference.

Yes, you can work at DRDO after the 12th as a shop assistant or administrative assistant. You may also enter DRDO as a technician in the desired discipline if you have an ITI credential. You enter as a group-D employee known as a technician.

(Note: After the 12th grade, you can sit for the store and administrative assistant assessment, which is a two-tiered exam followed by a typing examination. Since the applicant is not a graduate, no professional positions would be open to him or her)

In order to join DRDO after engineering the minimum eligibility criteria for joining DRDO is BSc in Science or BE or BTech in Engineering/Technology/Computer science and other specialisations like Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Instrumental, Chemical and Electronics and Communications with first division with NET/GATE qualification OR ME or MTech in Engineering in the first division in both graduate and postgraduate level.

Will trying to start a PhD late and after a gap of 4 years after my Masters, deteriorate my chances of getting admitted in a PhD program?

I am 30 years old now and I graduated with a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering when I was 26. I have worked in the industry after I graduated, in 2 companies for one year each and then in 1 company for the remaining 2 years. In the last company I worked mainly in Machine Learning. Now, I am motivated to pursue research in this field.

Will my age and the fact that I have a gap in research after my Masters affect my chances of getting into a PhD program ?

At least in the United States, discriminating based off your age would be illegal, so hopefully that would not affect your chances. I started my PhD program at 25 without a masters after working for a year in an industry that was only tangentially related to my program.

I would also not expect the 4 year gap in education to make an impact. I've known multiple people who have done this after working for a number of years. If anything I would expect most programs to see it as a positive. Many people coming into a PhD program directly after an undergraduate degree would have little to no experience in the area, and as such would have a higher risk of deciding that the field is not for them and not completing the program. Somebody leaving a full time job to pursue research in the field is clearly making a deliberate decision to do so because of their interest in the work. Will a 5 year gap between Undergrad and PhD hurt my chances?

In my opinion, it depends. I started my PhD around your age and I found some schools/advisors appreciated more mature students b/c they are more professional and focused (b/c they know why they are there as compared to the UG who may have just rolled into grad school b/c they could). However, I know some programs had unwritten rules of if you were more than 4 yrs out of school they preferred not to take you. So much of applying to PhD programs is department and professor dependent. But don't worry, for the overwhelming majority of schools I think is completely a non-issue.

I myself did not go straight from my MA to my PhD (sort of). In my case, I graduated with an MA at 24 and then was admitted into my PhD program at 32. In addition to that, I had already been through another PhD program (which I had started immediately after my MA) and had dropped out because it wasn't a good fit, and in that sense I felt like I had even more working against me.

In the end, I was never under the impression that the gap period, lack of research, or even a prior PhD experience hurt me. I mean, maybe it did with the programs that rejected my application, but I still got into a few good programs. I would also add that when it came to actually going through the PhD program, I strongly believe that my age and life/work experiences made me a far more mature and ambitious graduate student compared to others in my cohort, which is not only something that all of my professors recognized, but it also allowed me to progress through the program very quickly.

With that in mind, I think you can leverage your work experience to your advantage. After all, the pursuit of a higher degree is not just about graduate student life and producing research, and faculty (should) know that. I think they're also looking for applicants who they can envision actually getting through the PhD program in one piece and in a timely manner, with a degree and job offer in hand at the end of it. I think having prior (related) work experience is a good indicator that you have the potential to accomplish all of that if you can connect those experiences to being demonstrably productive, as well as to your research interests. Basically, if you can think of your gap period as an advantage rather than an impediment, it shouldn't be too hard to write a convincing narrative in your application that argues just that.
