Free Printable Homework Pass Set for K-12 Teachers

Plus ideas for using them.

Set of four free printable homework passes on a blue background with school supplies

The homework pass just might be the most coveted of all school rewards. It’s easy for teachers too, since it doesn’t cost a thing. Make it even easier to hand out homework passes with our free printable set of two options, each in two styles. Just fill out the form on this page to grab them.

Homework can be a surprisingly controversial topic. While many assume it’s just a natural part of a child’s education, others feel that homework isn’t all it’s cracked up to be . As we seek to encourage a better work-life balance for adults, is it possible homework is sending the wrong message to kids ?

That being said, very few schools have banned homework altogether , and it does have its benefits. It’s especially useful in subjects like math and reading, where students profit from lots of skills practice. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to offer kids a break with no penalty, or at least the chance to postpone their assignment to a better night. That’s where the homework pass comes in.

Homework Pass Options

Our free printable homework passes come in two options, with styles for both elementary and middle/high school:

  • No Homework: This pass allows kids to skip a homework assignment, with no penalty to their grade.
  • One Day Late: This one gives them an extra day to turn in their work, which can be really helpful if they have a busy night of after-school activities or aren’t feeling well.

Most teachers put some limitations on their homework passes, specifying that they’re for certain assignments only. (You don’t want to give a student a free pass on a big project or paper.) Make sure you explain any restrictions when you hand yours out.

Some teachers give every student a certain number of passes to use each semester or year. Others use them as rewards or prizes for in-class competitions or quizzes.

Classroom Rewards Ideas For High School Students

Classroom Rewards Ideas For High School Students

Rewarding your high school students is a great way to motivate them and encourage them to continue fulfilling their highest potential.

High school students are often burdened by their social circumstances or home lives and thus, it is imperative that they are rewarded for their commitment to hard work.

The following rewards can be given to high school students when they have exuded positive behavior and results:

While you may feel like high school students are too old for stickers, they can actually work!

This is because stickers provide a sense or certification for their achievements and students are conditioned from kindergarten to feel great about receiving these rewards.

It also gives them something physical to show their parents to demonstrate that they have been working hard.

Homework Passes

A homework pass is a brilliant reward for hard-working students who may want a night free of homework.

You should ensure that you explain carefully the conditions in which it can be used.

Just be sure to make it clear the coupon is not valid for a project or essay.

30 Minutes Of Music/Computer Time

Having a break to listen to their favorite musicians and/or play their favorite computer games can be hugely motivating for students.

Bracelet And Shoe Charms

If charms are all the rage in your area, then you should consider purchasing some charms that the students are able to earn.

You can also purchase charms that are suitable for shoes like crocs.

Snack Coupons/Food Vouchers

You can arrange with the school’s cafeteria to obtain coupons for free snacks that can be gifted to your students.

Sometimes these free snacks like ice cream are the biggest motivators of all!

Coupons For A Local Restaurant

This may be harder to obtain, you can contact local restaurants that students are known to visit and purchase some meal coupons.

Check in with any Wendy’s restaurants in your area as these restaurants are known for giving out free coupons.

Choose A Seat Coupon

This coupon enables students to choose where they want to sit during a specific day.

If you have more comfortable areas within your classroom, this is a great motivator for most students to work harder.

You might have heard of these and assume they’re for elementary kids. Nope. My high schoolers are still kids on the inside.

Desk Pets are officially erasers shaped like animals. But you could choose small stuffed animals in lieu of the erasers. I have a class mascot, a small stuffed teddy bear named Ted (I know, not too creative!). A student who deserves kudos can be put in charge of “babysitting” the pet for a period.

I’m always surprised how the little things work so well.

Extra Points

For students who thrive through academic activities, this provides the chance to earn more points to enhance their grade which is a massive incentive for these particular students.

Lunch With Yourself

Lunch With Yourself

If your students favor spending time with you specifically, then you can offer lunch on you as a means of reward.

Purchasing snack packs or bags or chips is a great way to incentivize high schoolers to work harder and meet their targets.

Buying packs of sweets and/or gum and gifting it to high schoolers who work hard is a great way to motivate them to continue to work as hard as they can.

If gum is banned in your school, then opt for sweets or TicTacs.

Sit In The Teacher’s Seat

Sitting in the teacher’s seat is appealing to most students and you could even offer them the opportunity to lead the discussion where possible!

My students are always grabbing my chair when I’m not looking and I have to throw them out. This is a great way to give them access.

Packets Of Ramen

Picking up some ramen packets and giving them to deserving students is the best way to incentivize them to work hard.

These rewards are inexpensive and your students will thank you immeasurably.

Credits For Missing Assignments

Another reward that is cost-free is a missing assignment points coupon.

These can be used if a student fails to turn in their assignment, as they can receive points for this future assignment regardless.

You may wish to set a limit on this, for obvious reasons, so that they do not receive full marks for an incomplete assignment.

Drink Packets

Drink packets are highly favored by students who bring water bottles to school and thus, they act as a brilliant form of incentive. They are also usually inexpensive.

Good Calls Home

Receiving a good call home is the best way to incentivize some students to work harder.

Providing good call passes in the form of coupons is great as students can also choose when to receive a good call home, filled with praise for their progress and achievements.

This is particularly great for students who are trying to get their parents on their side for a weekend-based event or party!

Hot Chocolate Mix

Hot chocolate is a great treat for students during the winter and this can motivate students to work even harder.

Stress Balls/Equipment

Purchasing inexpensive gifts from your local store is a great way to incentivize your students into working harder.

This Set of 18 Stress Balls is Super Affordable

Students get stressed immeasurably during exam season and this is a great way to ensure that they keep hitting their targets without becoming overworked and burnt out.

As mentioned, sweets like lollipops are the perfect reward to engage your students.

Every high school student loves hanging one of these out of their mouths and it can also help those inattentive students to concentrate more easily.

Allow your student to select which movie to watch during movie day, ensure that they are provided with appropriate guidelines in advance and that you have scheduled this film day in accordance with the academic schedule.

Pop-tarts are perfect during all seasons and will undoubtedly motivate your students into working harder. They are also relatively inexpensive.

Colorful Notebooks

Notebooks can be a great reward for hard-working students who can tailor them how they like.

Multipacks of different colored notebooks can be purchased at your local dollar store.

Fun Erasers

High school students are also enthralled by quirky equipment like fancy erasers.

You can buy quirky sets at your local dollar store and there are a plethora of options to choose from.

To conclude, there are a wide breadth of rewards that you can offer to your hardworking, high school students.

Often, these rewards are enough to incentivise them into continuing to work hard and thus, you will all reap the rewards massively!

The Magic of a Homework Pass for Classroom Management

Middle school classroom management requires a teacher to have many different strategies at their fingertips. Add the homework pass strategy to your classroom management plan to help engage and reward students from the 2 Peas and a Dog blog.

I surprised all of them this morning with a HAPPY NEW YEAR homework pass. I rarely hand out paper homework passes because I am trying to cut down on my class’ paper consumption. This year students have received only three paper homework passes Welcome Back, Birthday and Happy New Year.

Students get so excited when they get a homework pass. The majority of my students do not use them. They like to collect them throughout the year to see how many they can collect and not use. I taught some of my current students last year in my 7/8 split. They asked me on the first day of school if their homework passes carry over.

Do you use homework passes in your classroom? What is your procedure? Please share your ideas in the comments section below.  Try reward passes in your classroom. Find this resource on Shopify CAD and Teachers Pay Teachers USD .

K-Hope you are feeling better soon! I love the idea for the passes! I don't do this because I expect homework to be done and I give students plenty of time to get it finished and handed in on time. I do use something similar to you though..I stopped having a prize box this year and I have a set of cards…I got the idea from PINTEREST..and I laminated them. Things like, Special Supply Box, Specialty Seating, Wear a Hat in Class, Wear your IPOD in class. The kids LOVE it. I keep track of them in a method similar to yours…but I do hand out the pass…the kids love picking one out and then they have to submit it when they want to redeem it. I guess I don't worry too much because I laminated them, so they will get used again and again. This has motivated my students much more than the regular "pull something out of the prize box" and it has cost me next to nothing! Get better soon!

14 PBIS incentives for high school students

Mary Dean March 5, 2020

Teacher with high schoolers in class

High school student management can be a difficult job. Students at this age are going through lots of changes — everything from puberty and adjusting to a new school environment to learning about who they are and what they want to achieve. Even though these tough times can be challenging to navigate, there are several incentives you can use to encourage positive behavior in school.

Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions (PBIS) is an incentive-based program that encourages students to behave well in school. High school students may be coming into their own and striving for more independence, but they still need structure. PBIS incentives offer an easy and fun way to teach them about behavioral management and prepare them for social, emotional, and academic success for years to come.

PBIS incentives come in a variety of different shapes and forms. Here are 14 highly successful ideas you can implement in your high school.

14 effective incentives for high school students

1. jeans day.

Does your school have an assigned school uniform policy? If so, offering a jeans pass as a PBIS incentive is a great option. Each student who earns this incentive is given a pass to wear a pair of school-appropriate jeans to school each day. You can also implement this on a daily or weekly basis. Some schools also choose to only allow this incentive on certain days, such as Mondays or Fridays. A recurring incentive like this can give kids something to look forward to, reinforcing the importance of repeating good behaviors over the course of multiple days.

2. Late homework pass

High school students often have many things going on in their lives at once. Many kids are learning how to drive, spending time with friends after school, or even working a part-time job. With so many things on their to-do list, homework sometimes gets pushed to the back burner. Try offering an opportunity to turn in a class assignment a day or two late. This way, the homework is still completed, but students get the benefit of spending a little extra “me” time after class.

3. Move seats

Seating charts in class help keep things organized and are also a great way to minimize chaos. Many teachers implement seating charts to break up disruptive groups or keep kids focused in class. But one PBIS incentive that many students enjoy is the option to move seats for a class period. You can still enforce requirements to this option, like refraining from chatting with neighbors during class, but it gives high school students a little extra freedom in class.

4. Nap time

Remember nap time in pre-K? So do many high school students! This PBIS incentive is a wonderful way to encourage entire classes to display model behavior. When it comes time to reward this, choose a day when the whole period can be quiet and dimly lit. Students can spend this time napping lightly, relaxing, or working on homework. The flexibility offered during this period will be appreciated greatly by your students.

5. No homework pass

High school students don’t always enjoy doing homework. Unless you’re assigning Facebook posting or coloring pages, they may not get excited. However, your students might get excited at the possibility of skipping a homework assignment. When they skip this assignment, the grade can be recorded as a perfect score, or merely an excused assignment. Administrators can also prohibit specific assignments, like study guides, reviews, or exams, from being skipped.

6. Electronics pass

Many schools have implemented a strict no-phones policy to promote class engagement and minimize distracting behavior. However, using cell-phone time as a reward can be a great way to encourage positive behavior in school. Allowing students to listen to their own music or spend a predetermined amount of time checking their phones can be an effective way to reward the behaviors you are looking for in class.

two students talking together while working on their homeworks

7. Skip a class assignment

Some students find themselves dragging at school from time to time. Offering a free pass to skip an in-class assignment can help insure them against bad mental health days. These passes can have expiration dates, requirements, and exclusions, meaning they work well for any class and any subject. Additionally, you want to make sure that this time is spent wisely. Specify what other activities will be allowed, such as reading or working on homework from other classes.

8. Candy chest

No matter how old they get, students still enjoy the same simple pleasures just like they did in their earlier childhood. The age-old candy chest is an excellent example of an incentive you can implement in any classroom. Choose bite-sized candy bars or, to pack an extra punch, try full or king-sized options. Survey your class to see what types of candies are favorites so you know what options your students will love.

9. Special parking space

High school students are often driving their first car with a freshly earned driver’s license. The novelty of having their own designated parking space can be a highly sought-after reward for many teens. Try choosing a spot near the front of the building and marking it with a placard for students who earn it. You can reward students with this privilege on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The choice is yours!

10. Teacher’s chair

This is a fun twist on the pick-your-own-seat PBIS incentive. Instead of moving to an alternate student’s desk for the day, students are allowed to sit in the teacher’s chair for a day. This PBIS incentive is a light-hearted and fun activity for many students of all ages. Just make sure that no sensitive information is left open on your computer and that students won’t have access to any sensitive files or other documents.

11. Gift certificate

Many restaurants, candy stores, or ice cream shops in your community might be willing to contribute to your cause at school. Try asking local businesses to donate gift certificates as a reward for students. This can be as simple as a free or discounted ice cream treat or a free meal from a local hot spot. With this incentive, kids can enjoy a free treat on you as a reward for their hard work in school.

12. Test points

No matter how hard they study, some students don’t do as well on tests as they hope to. Extra test point coupons afford students the ability to add a set number of points to a test of their choosing. Many teachers find five, ten, and fifteen-point vouchers work best. This way, students still earn close to the same amount of points they would have, but they get a slightly higher score as well. You can also choose to exclude semester tests or statewide benchmarks from these coupons.

13. Yoga ball seat

Looking for a cheap and easy way to mix things up in class? A yoga ball or assortment of yoga balls can be just the answer to your search. Incentivize students to display good behavior by allowing them to sit on a yoga ball instead of a chair for a class period or other set periods of time. Be sure to specify the amount of time allowed and instruct students to avoid disruptive or overly distracting behavior. As long as this is implemented properly, it can be a fun way to encourage the right kind of behaviors in your class.

14. Treasure chest

Try a grown-up treasure chest. This PBIS incentive is similar to a treasure chest that you might find in a lower-level classroom, but the prizes differ. Some examples of prize ideas are keychains, lip balm, sunglasses, or an assortment of air freshener. Some teachers also use inexpensive lotion, hand sanitizer, and body spray. Reward a single behavior with this incentive or make it a requirement for students to show multiple instances of ethical conduct to earn this incentive.

PBIS incentives final thoughts

PBIS incentives are a cheap and easy way to encourage positive behavior in school. When students are rewarded for exemplifying desired behaviors at school, everybody wins! Class engagement will improve, student-teacher relationships will blossom, and kids will be excited to come to school each day. Investing time in setting up these incentives will help you eliminate problematic behaviors over the long term.

10 Homework Tips for High School Students

homework tips for high school students

Having trouble getting focused with homework? Here are 10 simple homework tips for high school students to make life much easier!

Hopefully after reading this, you’ll find a more enjoyable way to do homework while also being focused and efficient.

Let’s get started…

Prioritize Your Classes

Write down your homework everyday at school as it’s being assigned in some sort of agenda, planner, or notebook.

At the end of every day, list your homework assignments in order of how you’re going to do them. I recommend starting with the harder assignments first and finishing off with the easier ones.

Be sure to keep in mind what homework will need more time than others. If you have a project, essay, or long studying to do, start with that first.

This is going to give you the basics of how to organize your homework after school and what to prioritize.

Blue Pen, White Paper

Writing with a blue pen on white paper is the easiest way to remember your writing. It is scientifically proven to help retain information more efficiently than any other writing combo.

This is literally hacking your brain to memorize things easier. It is one of the best homework tips for high school students to use.

Try using this trick during your actual classes in school. That way when you study, you’ll already have your notes written in the best format.

Using other memory tools such as bullets, numbers, drawings, and highlights are also efficient ways to make studying a breeze.

Take breaks often.

homework tips for high school students

There is a technique in efficiency known as the Pomodoro Technique. Here is the basic formula for how it works:

  • Work for 25 minutes
  • Take a 5 minute break
  • Repeat 4 times
  • After the 4th cycle, take a longer 30 minute break

This is the best studying technique in the world for not only retaining information, but also no burning out while working on any task.

It will come in handy when you have long hours of homework that may seem impossible for your attention span.

There are actually Pomodoro timers out there online that you can use to remind you when it’s time to take a break.

Get Rid of Distractions

This one is obvious, but crucial!

Clear your desk, turn off your phone, avoid social media on your computer, and even clean your room.

A decluttered environment is a decluttered head. You will be able to focus much harder on the task at hand when there aren’t a bunch of distractions in your face.

You should also allow as much light to enter your room as possible. Open blinds, turn on lamps, and turn up your computer’s brightness (if you do homework on it).

More light in a workspace is proven to improve focus and efficiency.

Start Right When You Get Home

Getting in the habit of starting your homework right when you get home as a high school student is going to save you a lot of procrastination.

When you get home, eat something and then prepare yourself homework. Getting it done early will also give you unlimited free time until you go to sleep.

Taking your break first and then doing homework can cause anxiety from the fact that you don’t know how much time you have left to complete your assignments.

Do yourself a favor and avoid that anxiety. It feels much more rewarding to finish your homework and have the rest of your day to do whatever you want.

Related Post: 10 Time Management Tips for Teens

Finish homework during school.

This might be one of the best homework tips for high school students who don’t do much during lunch breaks.

This will save you so much time when you get home. I have literally finished over half of my homework before I even stepped foot in my house most days.

Utilize your breaks in between classes to work on smaller assignments that can be done without much focus.

Doing this homework in a group of friends that share the same classes will also help you get the homework done faster. Win-win!

Do Homework with Friends

When you get home, hop on a FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom call and do homework with friends.

This will benefit you in 2 main ways. One, you can share answers, insight, and make the work go by faster. Second, it’s simply way more fun!

You can essentially split the workload depending on the type of homework. You’ll also learn from each other, create closer bonds, and quiz each other for upcoming tests.

There are clearly many benefits to working in a group that most high school students miss out on. Even 1 friend can save you a ton of time and effort.

Utilize outside sources.

Homework doesn’t only have to be done with your class textbooks and notes from school.

Utilize certain outside sources such as Youtube, Khan Academy, and Slader.

Slader is one the greatest homework apps of all time, especially for math. It provides step by step solutions to all of your textbook’s questions.

They have so many subjects on their app! Here are a few:

  • Foreign Language

If your homework is done directly from textbook questions, chances are that Slader has the answers for you already. Look up your book name or ISBN number and find solutions to everything you need.

Same thing goes with Youtube, Khan Academy, and other online sources. This generation has more access to information than any other generation ever. Take advantage of it!

Work on a Full Stomach

Starting homework on a full stomach eliminates the need to get up from necessity.

Our brain naturally starts to focus on our hunger, thirst, or going to the bathroom if it exceeds the need of the task you’re currently doing.

When you’re doing homework, take breaks, but take them voluntarily. You won’t be able to focus one bit if your mind is on other things.

Get home, eat a nice meal, drink water, go to the bathroom, and start doing your homework. A full stomach from a good meal will also help your brain work better.

You’ve probably been told to eat a good breakfast before a test day to be “smarter”. The same thing applies to doing your homework.

Pro tip: Dark chocolate is proven to regain your focus on the task at hand. If you start getting distracted easily for no reason… have a treat.

Listen to music without lyrics.

I highly recommend listening to music while you work. However, listening to music with lyrics is a bad idea.

Find a no lyric playlist on any Music platform such as Spotify, Soundcloud, or even Youtube. Youtube has a constant live stream called “lofi hip hop radio” that has no lyrics and is excellent at helping you work.

Listening to music will not only help you focus, but it also makes homework more enjoyable. Without it, your mind will wander to different places.

Plus, music in your ears means less noise from the outside world. Everyone hates being distracted while doing homework by someone yelling outside your room.

Pop those headphones on and tunnel vision into your assignment!

Hopefully these were the best 10 homework tips for high school students you’ve ever heard. Try implementing them into your next homework session at home and in school.

They helped me so much during the last couple of years of high school. I wish for them to do the same for you!

Good luck this semester!

J.D. Vance went to Yale Law School. Here's what to know about his time there.

homework pass high school

Sen. J.D. Vance is former President Donald Trump's vice presidential pick for the 2024 election, as Trump announced on Truth Social on Monday, the same day the Republican National Convention kicked off.

Trump passed over established GOP politicians like Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota for the relatively young Senate newcomer, 39-year-old Vance.

While he is the junior senator from Ohio now, Vance graduated from Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut. Here's a little more about his time there.

When did J.D. Vance go to Yale?

Vance attended Yale Law School from 2010 to 2013 after graduating from Ohio State University with a degree in political science and philosophy.

He would go on to write and publish the best-selling memoir  "Hillbilly Elegy"  in 2016, later becoming the junior senator of the state of Ohio, where he grew up.

Did J.D. Vance mention Yale in Hillbilly Elegy?

Yes, a large part of his memoir is about his time at Yale Law.

According to Vance, he received a generous financial aid package to the prestigious law school due to his disadvantaged economic background.

Vance wrote in his memoir that he did appreciate his education at Yale Law and the people he met there. However, he said he felt the class disparity between him and the others at the school, explaining that many students came from middle class upbringings, whereas he came from a poor family with a parent struggling with substance use.

What did J.D. Vance do while at Yale Law School?

Vance met his wife Usha Chilukuri during their time at Yale Law and later got married in 2014.

According to his memoir, Vance became an editor of the Yale Law Journal , an accolade achieved by former Secretary of Labor  Robert Reich , former National Security Advisor John Bolton and other notable individuals.

Vance had author, corporate lawyer and John M. Duff, Jr. Professor of Law Amy Chau as one of his law professors. She would give him some sage advice regarding clerkships and career opportunities.
