The Holy Quran changed my life…

I was just 14 years old when I was first introduced to Islam. Back in 7th grade social studies class we had to memorize the name and symbol of Islam, the Five Pillars of Islam, and the name of Islam’s holy book. Fast forward to my freshman year of high-school, where Islam was formally introduced and discussed. We talked about women in hijab (my teacher, let’s call him Mr. C,  made it clear they did not feel oppressed in it) and how it would be wrong to take their right away to wear what they wanted… That class saved my humanity. All my ignorant assumptions were eliminated, which made it easier to follow the path of truth.

My family is very Christian, but my immediate family has fallen away from practice. When I was 6 or so we would always go to church. I would remember my grandma drinking coffee offered before the service with her hat on (She would always make sure her hair was covered by something before entering the church, as she thought it was disrespectful to have hair uncovered) and I would cry for some coffee too. I would eventually be given some, decaf of course, but it was enough to silence me. I never understood what was taught to me in church, all I remember was I got snacks, got to paint, sing, dance, run around, etc. Soon my family stopped attending, and my faith ceased with it. My faith was revived when I found Islam…

Oh Allah, I wish I could describe the warmth You give me, to make them understand why I have turned towards you. But, Your magnificence is one that is transcends words. Nothing will ever be sufficient enough to explain.   I had doubt in my mind when I thought of the existence of You. I’m still unsure to this day what compelled me to do so. Maybe I knew I was in error to deny Your magnificence, or maybe it was my  hope that I was correct in my ways.  

I remember when it first happened, my eyes were tired and my heart cold. I typed my address into a website for free reading material. It was late, I did it quickly to ensure the least amount of regret for doing so. After verifying my address, I also requested to be called about a free mentoring program that would help me learn about Islam.

A few days later, I was sitting in my school cafeteria a received a call. I didn’t notice that I had missed it until a few minutes later. A voicemail was left, an older man asking me to call back when I had time to discuss the mentoring program. I never called back, and I deleted the message. I pray to Allah I had not caused him harm waiting for a call he had never received.

A few months passed, and I forgot all about the reading material and the voicemail. Life went back to normal for me, back to having my head in classic books and studying for arduous exams. I got home one day and my name was printed on a semi-crushed orange envelope stuffed into my mailbox. I was confused as to what it could be. I opened the top, and suddenly a soft aroma much like the fragrance flowers drifted into my nose. It was a smell that I would never be able to forget. A smell I often find floating in my room and into my mind. I never knew someone’s heart could be so attached to a smell, it’s a smell my heart will desire for eternity.

When I held Your words in my hand for the first time, I was fighting off tears. I thumbed through the pages, over and over again. With each turn there was the aroma I admired so much. I was scared to read. I was scared I might be wrong about You. I finally decided to open it.

I couldn’t hold them back anymore. The tears streamed from my eyes onto my Quran and the pages gratefully soaked every one of them up. It’s not just tears that are embedded into the pages of that Quran forever, but also my heart. Oh Al-Rahman, only You can turn the hearts.

After that I had accepted Islam whole-heartedly. I accepted Your Light into the empty spaces of my being. Spaces caused by anger, guilt, denial, sadness were no longer causing me anguish. Instead they now reflect your Light, in shaa Allah, to the highest degree. The reflection set a fixed light upon my heart and the warmth melted every drop of ice I was harbouring in my soul.

Your essence has captured my mind and my love. To this day I find it hard to hold back tears when the thought of you, Oh Al-Wadud, floats into my mind. How arrogant was I to deny your existence, when there is proof of it everywhere? Everything around me submits to You, from the atoms to the mountains, to the celestial bodies in space. Everything acknowledges You.

It was revealed to the last prophet of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad (SAW). The arch-angel Gabriel brought this scripture in the 7th century A.D. in instalments. It is in Arabic. It has 30 sections, 114 chapters and 6,666 verses. It is the only infallible book of the world.

“This is the book about which there is no doubt, guidance for those conscious of Allah.” (Al-Quran 2-2)

The Holy Quran is a complete code of life. One can find a solution to every problem. It not only deals with the worldly affairs but also with matters of the world hereafter. It gives us complete guidance. There are clear injunctions about our life in the Holy Quran. Every aspect of our life has been discussed in detail in it. It helps us lead a noble, honest, humble and fair life and makes us live a more harmonious life with our fellow beings. It is the matchless treasure and it contains the solution to every problem.

Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “The Holy Quran is a wealth that no wealth can equal (or reach) it. And there will be no poverty after it.”

Essay – Purpose of Life in My Reading of Quran

It is inconceivable for a book with such a grandiose goal such as Quran to be lacking a stated purpose for its followers. However, due to an overtly religious image ascribed to it, the stated purpose for humankind is usually stated as ‘to worship Allah’. This conveys the idea that we were born for the purpose of filling up masjids and praying as much as possible for a God who demands prostrations. Islamic scholars would deny this of course and justifiably so since even in Traditional jurisprudence, ‘worship’ has a far wider connotation but this is the reality of the mindset on the ground. Muslims view ‘ibadah’ (worship) as the religious, ritualistic side of Islam. One can discern this from their language. Often times we hear people say ‘its time to do some worship as one is getting on in years’.

I do not believe this is our purpose as per the Quran. It is not that ritualistic worship has no place in the Quranic project but rather it is the means through which we attain a particular state of being. That state of being then propels us into the project itself – which is to bring peace into the world.

The clear, unequivocal statement of Quran is that Allah did not create us except to worship Him (51/56). This verse of Quran has suffered the fate of many other verses which is to be quoted out of context.  Even worse, this verse starts with an ‘and’ (as in ‘AND I have not created except ..’) which shows a direct link to the previous verse but when it is quoted, the ‘and’ is usually dropped. I find such treatment of Quran (by believers no less!) to be deplorable.  If one reads from 51/52, it speaks about the coming of the messenger. 51/53-54 speaks about a negative response to the message and 51/55 speaks about fertilising or vivifying the message for it benefits the believers. Then we come to 51/56 which connects directly to the passage so far. Therefore, it is very evidenced that the ‘worship’ mentioned is about following the messenger and vivifying the message. This is what it means to ‘worship’ Allah – to follow the totality of the message for that is what we are created to do.

However, this doesn’t mean that we are to become carbon copies of one another. Not at all. Quran acknowledges our individuality and sees us as bricks within a structure. Indeed, those who fight in Allah’s way (to uphold truth and justice for all mankind, not for some jihadist power trip!) are seen as a well structured wall (61/4).  Furthermore we are told that each of us have an expression which Allah himself turns us to (2/148) and so we are to strive towards the good. This again shows our individuality is an intricate part of the Quranic project. We do not need to become zombies or lose our indigenous cultures in order to become islamic at all.

The question may now arise – what unites us then if we are allowed to be individualistic? People do seek unity in a religion after all, if not uniformity itself. Once again, we can find our seemingly divergent purposes come together in a single purpose by simplying looking at the context of 2/148 which was quoted above.  If we read from 2/142-152, we would see that the divergent goals 2/148 mentions is under the auspices of ‘masjid al-haram’.  It should be said here that I do not believe this refers to the mosque in Makkah but rather a space in which God’s laws are submitted to (the literal meaning of the term ‘masjid’) and this space is sanctified by God (the literal meaning of the word ‘haram’).

Therefore what unites us should be the struggle to build a space where we can adhere to Allah’s laws and thereby attain sanctity.

Perhaps an example of this would help elucidate my proposition above. Let us take a more outlandish example. What if a person’s talent was in arts and crafts? It wouldn’t mean that he or she would be outside the Quranic spectrum of purpose. Rather, he or she could channel those energies into spurring people on towards the Quranic goal of a sanctified space. Many artists and craftsmen do that even now, inspire people towards the good with their works.

Quran is a text which allows humankind to achieve self-actualisation without losing their personal identity. It really is the simple matter of reading it holistically and living your life within the parameters of a set of rules as well with an overarching goal.

That state of being then propels us into the project itself – which is to bring peace into the world.” – Very nicely put. As I used to say in my own clumsy way, it takes both the inner AND the outer. This eloquent statement of yours makes it clear why both are necessary.

You talked about the purpose of life. This reminds me of some questions: What counts as doing good? What’s the purpose of medicine, which saves people’s life? Is euthanasia allowed? If the purpose of life is to vivify God’s message, then doing good should include making people more righteous, and medicine should recover patients from illness in such a way that they will have a chance to become more righteous. But what about persistent vegetative state and brain death? If the patient can never ever be conscious and conscientious again even if his heart is still beating, does it mean that he’s dead, and euthanasia is allowed? This is related to the definition of nafs. If the nafs is taken and is never returned, then the person is dead. But what’s nafs?
