Responsibility of Students Essay: Good morning respected teachers and my dear friends. There are some words that are associated with our daily life. Life revolves around some gestures that make us social beings. Amongst such things, responsibility is one major activity that our life requires. Being responsible is a basic key to success in our life. A child learns to be responsible by watching their adults. So students’ life is one of the golden periods in an individual’s life when they get an opportunity to acquire values and qualities that make them responsible.

A student goes to school and gets associated with various duties and responsibilities. It is one of the primary steps of learning various things. Home and school are the cradles of shaping an individual for the future. At home, the parents shoulder a great responsibility to teach their child to form basic habits and being responsible. Similarly, at school, the teachers play an important role in directing the students to handle responsibilities for a bright life ahead.

If a child learns to be responsible right from the student life, then he or she has paved a golden path for the future. It is the stage to shape one’s character and moral duties. At school, various tasks are assigned to the students where they learn to become responsible. If right from childhood responsibility is not given to them they do not understand its importance in life. So the value of being responsible is to be imbibed right from a student’s life.

Here we can discuss some basic steps to become responsible. Responsibility should be handled through various steps. One major responsibility of a student is to acquire education. A nation develops when the population is educated and can contribute to human resources. To contribute towards building a strong nation is a key responsibility of a student. A student learns to be responsible when he or she acquires education at the proper time. It is the prime duty of both school and home to make the students realize how to become responsible. Once a student gathers knowledge through education then they can shape their lives in a positive direction accordingly. We know education empowers an individual to discriminate what is right or wrong. Education develops the potential of that particular individual so if the students handle the responsibility of acquiring education then they can contribute to a better nation. Nation demands such students to be responsible citizens in the future and can fight against crime, treachery, dishonesty, or crime.

We have discussed the responsibility of a student towards the country. But it does not end here. A student should learn to handle responsibility while in school. Various occasions are celebrated in the school premises which are majorly conducted by the students. So when they are assigned duty it is their responsibility to perform it with great care. Even the school holds programs like investiture ceremony where different titles are conferred to students for various activities such as the head boy and head girl, cultural captain, sports captain, house captain. These rewards acknowledge the potential of students and arouse a sense of responsibility towards the school. These small steps actually instill a deep sense of responsibility amongst the students.

Home and parents are the most important part of a student to learn how to become responsible. Children from a tender age should be aware of the responsibility that every family member has to perform in the family environment, in his/her own capacity. Students must acquire values of fellow-feeling, empathy, and respect for others whether they are at school or home. This helps them to have a healthy relationship with others with whom they interact. They learn the value of teamwork and become responsible to contribute and share without being self-centered and selfish. Students should keep in mind it’s their responsibility to always demonstrate such behavior, attitude and actions that reflect their culture and family values.

Short Essay on Responsibility of Students

Good morning dear friends and teachers. Today we are going to discuss a very important and essential part of human beings and more specifically for students. First of all, we need to understand what is responsibility? This can be defined or interpreted in different ways as different people have different ways of expressing their responsibility.

To some people, being responsible means performing their duties properly. Whereas some believe that a sense of responsibility originates from a collection of qualities like love, affection, compassion, and commitment. Some of the responsibilities are associated with authority but that is not always the case. We all have some kind of responsibility towards our family and society as well. Responsibility is the attribute of a human character which implies that an individual should act in a certain manner to take on a few obligations and commitments. He/She must also be accountable for the outcomes of the activities.

For students, who are at the beginning phase of their life, responsibility mostly refers to their mindset, attitude, and actions that they are expected to demonstrate in the family and social environment.

The primary duty or responsibility of a student is to learn and acquire knowledge, along with improving their intellect and widening their mental capabilities. It is the time for students to learn good traits like discipline, obedience, perseverance, and respect for elders. School is a platform that provides opportunities for the development of these qualities. So it is the responsibility of every student to imbibe these fine qualities which would guide them in the journey of life in the future.

Students are considered to be future leaders who can take the country towards progress and prosperity. So they should develop a mindset and prepare themselves to protest against all shades of malice existing in society. In my everyday life, I play many different roles, but currently, the most prominent one is the role of a student. This role is primarily for me because the majority of people whom I communicate with observe me as such. A college in itself is a place where people are expressing distinct roles and act according to this setting, or shared reality (OpenStax 86). Every person at this stage has a determining role they are expected to play.

As a student, I am expected to complete many tasks in a short amount of time and behave in a specific manner. This includes being polite and respectful to others by their status in the educational facility, as well as being prepared for the tasks, being attentive, and on time. While in college with many people around, especially if there are any professors present, I feel obligated to stay at my best behavior. However, the situation differs when there are only students around, as there is a different kind of pressure in the company of equals. Cooley states that “we imagine how we look to others, draw conclusions based upon their reactions to us” (qtd. in OpenStax 87). Since I am expected to behave differently in front of these two hierarchical groups, I act the way I want that group of people to think of me.

I perceive my status as a college student as something that I have achieved. I believe many other students follow the same trail of thoughts, and I regard them as equals in this setting. A student can have many various responsibilities, duties, and behaviors to follow in a college and outside of it, and can experience role strain. I experience role strain during my study when multiple overlaying duties accumulate and overlap with my other roles. Role strain is especially prominent during exams, however, it is still manageable.

As learners, students play a crucial and active role in education. They involve and interact with students and teachers, participate in classroom discussions, and act in a receptive manner. With changing times, the role of learners in education has got subverted from a facilitator to a task monitor. They collect materials for learning and assignments, check on their study times, put back materials at their respective places after using them, and more. With great powers come great responsibilities. With rights come duties. Students are the future of a nation, and teachers and parents need to groom and nurture the kids in a manner that they grow up to become responsible and able leaders. Thus, apart from being entrusted with rights, students are entrusted with responsibilities and duties that they are expected to perform and help in the development of society.

Charity begins at home, and school is the second home of students. Every student has some responsibilities towards the institutions they are studying in. They are given duties to perform, which they are expected to discharge efficiently.

Students play an active role in classrooms. Apart from the classroom or traditional learning, the world of education and learning is changing rapidly. Find out how traditional learning differs from online learning .

Some of the roles and responsibilities of students in classroom management are:

  • Being in their best of behaviours: An educational environment is required to ensure that the students get access to an excellent education. But, for that environment to exist, they are expected to comply with behavioural expectations and display values of politeness, kindness, compassion, and respect.
  • Meeting academic expectations: Students must meet the academic expectations by creating a collaborative learning environment and displaying values of teamwork and unity.
  • Being respectful and punctual: By being respectful, students contribute to a quality learning environment and reduce disruptions and disciplinary actions. Students are also supposed to be punctual. Being late for class creates a negative impact on their grades. Thus, students must maintain discipline in the classroom.

Besides performing duties towards their class, students play an important role in managing their school.

Given below is a list of ten duties that students should perform in school:

  • Obey the teachers
  • Maintain discipline in the class
  • Keep the school neat
  • Greet everyone with a smile
  • Abide by the rules of the school
  • Complete the assigned work on time
  • Participate in the activities organized in the school
  • Co-operate with the teachers
  • Decorate their school with charts, posters, et cetera

Students play a crucial role in managing their schools and classrooms. But, that is not enough for them. Ultimately, students are expected to come out of their comfort zones as able leaders and contribute to the development of the society they are living in.

The various responsibilities of students towards their school and society are:

Eradicate literacy by using their acquired skills, and teach others to read and write. One way of achieving this goal can be actively participating in literary campaigns organized by schools and imparting mass education.

  • Fight anti-social activities of a few corrupt people.
  • Work with the teachers and other staff members of the school to uplift the socially and economically disadvantaged groups, blind children, and orphans.
  • Be sensitive towards their environment, and devise ways to protect their environment from pollution, fight energy crises, and more. Some ways of doing this are keeping their localities and school clean and tidy, practising reuse, recycling, and reducing, et cetera.
  • Students are the future of their nation, and it is important for them to actively participate in cultural, social, political, and economic affairs, striving to be the change they wish to see around themselves.

We sincerely hope you’ve got a solid idea about the responsibilities and duties of being a student.

At times, you may face a dilemma about whether to seek outside help for academics. Some of the students have a hard time grasping tough concepts or some are shy in raising their hands in class which ultimately leads to bad grades. Their parents, teachers and elders appreciate a person who has such qualities. An ideal student is not only a desirable student for his teacher but also a pride of his family and the nation.

Qualities of an Ideal Student

An ideal student is always disciplined and lives following conduct. He is always conscious of his duties and responsibilities towards his parents and elders.  He is truthful, generous, kind-hearted and optimistic. He has a quest for knowledge. He maintains good health and a sound mind.

An ideal student is persevering and consistent in his studies.  He is regular in his classes. He reads a lot of books other than academic books. Time never stops for anyone. Next, he is always obedient and broad-minded. He follows instructions from his teacher and allows himself to be corrected and reformed for betterment.

An ideal student is always humble. Only if he is humble, he will be able to learn, be obedient and will gain the knowledge and the skills imparted by his parents or teachers.

An ideal student is responsible. Without having the capability to shoulder the responsibility regarding anything, a student will not be able to achieve anything worthwhile in life. Only a responsible person can carry forward the greater responsibility of being a good citizen, a good person or even for that matter the responsibility of a family.

An ideal student is never selfish. He is always very helpful and generous. Knowledge is said, increase only by sharing. He will always help his fellow students. He is full of humility and will never know what pride, conceit, vanity or selfishness is.

An ideal student will have a keen observation and a seeker. Only a curious mind will seek new things and like to learn novel concepts as only a keen observer can acquire knowledge of new things.

An ideal student respects and obeys the laws of his country. He has all the qualities of a good citizen. He has respect for all religions. He has a passion for serving his motherland. He never tells lies and he doesn’t betray anyone. He fights against social evils.

As we all know a disciplined student is always successful. Finally, an ideal student is also respectful. He who has no respect, knows no knowledge, is a maxim. One cannot progress without the blessings of his teachers and elders, which he earns only when he possesses all the above qualities.

Characteristics of an Ideal Student

An excellent student is fully aware of his responsibilities and obligations. He is paving the route for future generations. Today's pupils will be tomorrow's leaders. If pupils have lofty ideas before them, a nation can progress. A student with good grades is not necessarily a good student. He may establish a new school record, but he could be a complete failure in real life. A perfect student is someone who embodies both simple living and high thought. He is fearless enough to tackle life's difficulties.

An ideal student follows the standards of conduct and discipline at all times. This is the stage of life when a person's character is formed. According to the proverb, if you lose your wealth, nothing is lost; if you lose your health, something is lost; and if you lose your character, all is lost.

A student who lacks self-control is like a ship without a rudder. It goes adrift and never makes it to the harbor. He must adhere to the school's rules and must heed his teachers' commands. He should choose his friends carefully and deliberately. To ensure that no evil tempts him, he must be completely aware. He is well aware that a single rotten fruit can ruin the entire basket.

An ideal student understands how much he owes to his parents. When he grows up, he never forgets to take care of them. He is a human being's servant. He expresses his concerns and troubles to his family members. Volunteering in the community is something I'm enthusiastic about. He should take an active role in identifying and resolving various societal issues.

Our country requires students with steely nerves and iron muscles. They should be able to delve into the universe's secrets and mysteries. They must be resolute to carry out their responsibilities, even if it means risking their lives. Only such students can assist the country in obtaining prosperity and overall development.

The Parent's Role in Creating an Ideal Student

Almost every parent desires nothing but the best for their children. Parents are unquestionably influential in their children's lives. Many youngsters strive to be successful, but they lack the qualities that make a perfect student. So, are those children the sole perpetrators? The answer is emphatical no.

This is because parents play a huge role in determining whether or not a student will be an ideal student. Furthermore, parents must recognise that they have a significant role in shaping a child's general personality and attitude. Furthermore, parents must instill in their children the value of education.

Essay Introduction:

Students are the repository of all that is vital and vigorous in society. They are the vital forces in the social organism. If the students do not come upto our expectations simply because they are led astray and their vigor is drained away, the radiance of our hopes is likely to be dimmed. It is essential, therefore, that students should realize this and make full preparations for playing their proper role in society and answering the call of the time to come.

Duties of students:

This leads us to the consideration of the duties which the students should discharge in order to become good citizens of tomorrow. When we talk of duties, the terms ‘rights’ naturally occurs to us. The students of today, unfortunately, are conscious of only their rights. It is good that they should have a consciousness of these too, for they are the basic conditions of freedom. But, what is more important to understand is the fact that rights do not stand by themselves. They grow out of duties.

Hence the need is to be more conscious about duties than about rights. Duties of students can be divided into four categories: (1) Duties to themselves, (2) Duties to the family, (3) Duties to the society and the (4) Duties to the humanity.

Duties towards themselves:

The first duty of students is towards themselves. They should try to have good health, for a sound mind lives in a sound body. One cannot do anything great without good health, however much one wants to do so. For this purpose they should take part in games and sports. They should be guided by the maxim “Read while you read and play while you play.” The second duty which they owe to themselves is character formation. Building up of good habits in the beginning is very necessary. The good habits that are formed in the student life last throughout. And character is nothing but a bundle of habits.

‘Simple living and high thinking1 must be the motto of their lives. They should develop decency, good manners and good behavior towards others. Thirdly, they should pay full attention to their studies, for it is their studies which shall determine their future course of life.

Duties towards the family:

Besides duties towards themselves, students owe duties towards their parents, elders and teachers. Parents who are responsible for their having come into the beautiful, delightful world have a moral claim upon their children, who should do everything to repay at least some part of the irreparable debt they owe to their parents. They should not do anything that tarnishes the image of their family.

Next to parents come teachers to whom students woe irreparable debt. The teacher who guides youth to course through this life as a respectable member of society deserves the most sanctified respect of the students.

Duties towards society and nation:

Man is a social being. He is what he can be; what he intends to become due to society. Social service leads to the liberation of the self which in turn leads to the ennoblement of the soul and the enlargement of the spirit. Besides these spiritual gains, students can get experience of an education in harmonious social living. They can also eke out their resources by earning some little money as a result of their social service. They can help in the eradication of social evils like infant marriages, casteism, untouchability etc.

During their vacation students can organize night schools in villages and thus be helpful in solving the problem of illiteracy. They can instill political consciousness in the villagers and can tell them their rights in the democratic set up of the country. During times of war students can organize civil defence operations and look after the families of these who are actively engaged infighting against the enemy.

Duties towards humanity:

Service to humanity is the crying need of the hour. Nationalism is an utterly crude term in the context of the modern times. The world is a family; this should ever remain on the conscious plan of their minds. Thanks to science that it has conquered barriers of space. Students of one country can communicate and establish contacts with students of foreign countries. They should try to develop sense of accommodation for the people of all countries without discrimination on the basis of social or political systems of their countries or the faith or religion of their societies.

In the world of today our lot is closely connected with the lot of people of every other country. Students should help in the formation of effective world public opinion against cases of injustice, tyranny of oppression in any part of the world.

Students and politics:

Politics is an integral part of our life. What Mahatma Gandhi once said of himself, “I take part in politics because it encircles us like the coils of snake” may with the same degree of emphasis be said of every one of us including students. And hence they should be allowed full participation in the policies of their country and that of the world.

Conclusion—duties and rights:

We have put before the students a plethora (superfluity) of duties. In fact, the performance of these duties is very essential particularly now when free India demands active participation of students in the task of social advancement and national development. But the society and the government should not lose sight of their duties and responsibilities towards students.

Those suffering from financial hardships should be rendered all possible financial help; for the proper execution of their studies. Employment after studies should be ensured with perfect fairness and non-discrimination.

He is the backbone of the nation and the pride and glory of his country. He must, therefore, be dutiful to himself, to family, and to the country. It is not proper for him to rush into politics, for he will get plenty of time for it later.

A student lives in society, he has his duty to serve it. Our country has a lot of problems like illiteracy, rural uplift, etc. During long vacations, students may go back to their villages and impart elementary education to uneducated boys and adults. They can also clear jungles, and repair roads. It is in this way that they can know the country and feel for it.

Student life has, therefore, smiles and tears, joys and sorrows, privileges and duties. So a student should form good habits and give up bad ones. He should be guided by his guardian or teacher who is supposed to be his ‘friend, philosopher, and guide.

British Academics Despair as ChatGPT-Written Essays Swamp Grading Season

‘It’s not a machine for cheating; it’s a machine for producing crap,’ says one professor infuriated by the rise of bland essays.

The increased prevalence of students using ChatGPT to write essays should prompt a rethink about whether current policies encouraging “ethical” use of artificial intelligence (AI) are working, scholars have argued.

Times Higher Ed Logo

With marking season in full flow, lecturers have taken to social media in large numbers to complain about AI-generated content found in submitted work.

Telltale signs of ChatGPT use, according to academics, include little-used words such as “delve” and “multifaceted,” summarizing key themes using bullet points and a jarring conversational style using terms such as, “Let’s explore this theme.”

In a more obvious giveaway, one professor said an advertisement for an AI essay company was  buried in a paper’s introduction ; another academic noted how a student had  forgotten to remove a chatbot statement  that the content was AI-generated.

“I had no idea how many would resort to it,” admitted  one U.K. law professor .

Des Fitzgerald, professor of medical humanities and social sciences at  University College Cork , told  Times Higher Education  that student use of AI had “gone totally mainstream” this year.

“Across a batch of essays, you do start to notice the tics of ChatGPT essays, which is partly about repetition of certain words or phrases, but is also just a kind of aura of machinic blandness that’s hard to describe to someone who hasn’t encountered it—an essay with no edges, that does nothing technically wrong or bad, but not much right or good, either,” said Professor Fitzgerald.

Since  ChatGPT’s emergence in late 2022 , some universities have adopted policies to allow the use of AI as long as it is acknowledged, while others have begun using AI content detectors, although  opinion is divided on their effectiveness .

According to the  latest Student Academic Experience Survey , for which Advance HE and the Higher Education Policy Institute polled around 10,000 U.K. undergraduates, 61 percent use AI at least a little each month, “in a way allowed by their institution,” while 31 percent do so every week.

Professor Fitzgerald said that although some colleagues “think we just need to live with this, even that we have a duty to teach students to use it well,” he was “totally against” the use of AI tools for essays.

“ChatGPT is completely antithetical to everything I think I’m doing as a teacher—working with students to engage with texts, thinking through ideas, learning to clarify and express complex thoughts, taking some risks with those thoughts, locating some kind of distinctive inner voice. ChatGPT is total poison for all of this, and we need to simply ban it,” he said.

Steve Fuller, professor of sociology at the  University of Warwick , agreed that AI use had “become more noticeable” this year despite his students signing contracts saying they would not use it to write essays.

He said he was not opposed to students using it “as long as what they produce sounds smart and on point, and the marker can’t recognize it as simply having been lifted from another source wholesale.”

Those who leaned heavily on the technology should expect a relatively low mark, even though they might pass, said Professor Fuller.

“Students routinely commit errors of fact, reasoning and grammar [without ChatGPT], yet if their text touches enough bases with the assignment, they’re likely to get somewhere in the low- to mid-60s. ChatGPT does a credible job at simulating such mediocrity, and that’s good enough for many of its student users,” he said.

Having to mark such mediocre essays partly generated by AI is, however, a growing complaint among academics. Posting on X,  Lancaster University  economist  Renaud Foucart  said marking AI-generated essays “takes much more time to assess [because] I need to concentrate much more to cut through the amount of seemingly logical statements that are actually full of emptiness.”

“My biggest issue [with AI] is less the moral issue about cheating but more what ChatGPT offers students,” Professor Fitzgerald added. “All it is capable of is [writing] bad essays made up of non-ideas and empty sentences. It’s not a machine for cheating; it’s a machine for producing crap.”

What are your physical fitness goals? How much do you weigh? Do you plan on running a marathon next year? The goal of all these questions is different but they involve a set of similar activities; Exercises. Physical exercises are activities that improve or maintain physical fitness and overall health. Why do we Exercise?

Exercise is like any activity that requires physical effort and helps maintain physical fitness and overall health. When we exercise, our bodies undergo numerous physiological changes, such as an increase in heart rate, which further pumps more oxygen-rich blood to our muscles. This delivery of oxygen further benefits the muscles’ ability to perform efficiently and helps improve cardiovascular perseverance.

The above effects further lead to improvements and long-term adaptations in our bodies. Further regular exercise also leads to:

  • Regular exercise helps reduce the risk of heart disease and improves cardiovascular health conditions.
  • Methodical exercise benefits in strengthening the muscles and making them more resistant to fatigue.
  • Weight-bearing exercises help restore bone formation and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Exercise can improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels.

As per the study published in The Lancet Psychiatry in 2018, people who exercised were found with 43.2 percent fewer days of poor mental health than those who did not exercise. The numbers are sufficient enough to elaborate on the powerful link between physical activity and the importance of mental health in our lives.

Types of Exercise

Now, as you come to know about the importance of exercise in our daily lives, similarly, it should also be noted that not all exercises are equally effective. Different physical activities offer unique benefits.

To understand it more, let us learn about some main categories of exercises:

1. Aerobic exercise: Aerobic exercise is also known as cardiovascular exercise. This physical activity helps increase heart rate and breathing. Examples of aerobic exercise include running, cycling, swimming, and brisk walking. It is important to know that Aerobic exercise is an excellent workout for cardiovascular health and calorie burning.

2. Strength Training: A strength training exercise that works against resistance to build muscle strength. This type of exercise includes weightlifting, bodyweight training, and resistance band workouts. Strength training is important for the growing age as it helps maintain muscle mass.

3. Flexibility Exercises: Flexibility exercises include stretching and practicing yoga. These physical activities improve in range of motion, reduce the risk of injury, and also help in the relaxation of muscle tension.

4. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): HIIT involves exercises of intense activity followed by periods of rest or lower-intensity workouts. This type of exercise is highly effective for improving fitness and burning calories in a short amount of time.

Should We Make Exercise a Habit?

Although we all know the benefits of exercise, many people still struggle to make it a regular part of their lives. To overcome this hurdle, here are some strategies that could help one make exercise a regular habit.

  • Begin your workouts with goals that can be easily achieved. Doing 10 minutes of exercise a day is better than none.
  • Find activities that you enjoy. Doing exercise does not mean going to the gym. Dancing, hiking, or sports serve the same purpose that is counted as exercise.
  • Schedule your exercise like any other important appointment in your daily schedule. Mark your calendar and stick to it.
  • Find friends or a team to exercise with. Support of social groups increases one´s motivation and makes exercise more enjoyable.
  • The market is full of fitness applications. Find a fitness app and wearable devices that help keep track of your progress and motivate you.
  • 75 to 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise and 150 to 300 minutes of moderately intense aerobic activity help reduce the mortality of cardiovascular disease by 22% to 31%

Exercise is a powerful tool that not only helps one physically but mentally. Understanding the benefits of exercises, exploring the types of workouts, and developing strategies for doing regular aerobics helps enhance one´s well-being.

Either go for a brisk walk or do a yoga session, find whatever works for you. Physical activity should be a joyful part of your daily life and trust that your body and mind will thank you for it.

essay duty of student

In 2019, the tragic death of Lachlan Cook, following diabetes-related complications which manifested during a school trip to Vietnam, highlighted that a school’s duty of care to students extends to overseas trips and cannot be delegated to a third party.

WorkSafe Victoria is now criminally prosecuting Melbourne private school Kilvington Grammar and World Challenge, an educational school travel company, for failing to ensure that 16-year-old Lachlan was not exposed to health and safety risks.

Schools not only owe a duty of care towards students. Schools must also, so far as is reasonably practicable, provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to health for workers. The legal implications of failing to meet this required duty are significant.

Owing duties to multiple stakeholders, where interests do not always neatly align, can adversely impact the mental health of teaching professionals, in particular school leaders. One in five school leaders reported moderate to severe depression, compared with 1.5% of the general population, with others reporting serious mental health concerns including anxiety, burnout, stress, and trouble sleeping, according to a 2024 study by the Australian Catholic University.

Schools have the very difficult job of balancing these duties.

Duty of care towards students – overseas trips

In 2023 Victorian Coroner’s Court found that Lachlan Cook’s death was preventable. The Court derided Kilvington Grammar for its “laissez-faire” attitude towards its responsibility for the students on the trip. Lachlan had been self-managing his diabetes when he fell ill after consuming street food, developed high glucose levels, and eventually suffered a cardiac arrest and brain damage leading to his death. The two teachers and World Challenge leader on Kilvington Grammar’s trip to Vietnam were not trained to support students with diabetes, and did not have access to Lachlan’s diabetes management and action plans.

In April, WorkSafe charged both Kilvington Grammar and World Challenge under section 23(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic) ( OHS Act ), which states that employers owe a duty, as far as reasonably practicable, to people other than employees to ensure they are not exposed to risk to health and safety. The proceedings are ongoing.

While this case lies on the extreme end of the spectrum of failure, it is clearly established that schools and teachers owe a duty to their students, both under legislation and at common law. The duty is based on the fact that the school stands in for the guardian of the child while they are at school.

The outer limits of the duty have been tested in cases which held that this duty extends beyond the physical confines of the school, and the temporal limits of regular school hours. In practical terms, this means the duty may apply to students at a bus stop after school or where a student is dropped at school before school starts. The duty does not ‘clock on’ when the first bell rings, and end when the students depart the classroom for the day.

Principal burnout

Managing the at-times murky boundaries of the duty of care can have psychosocial implications.

Schools are increasingly stretching already-thin resources to cover risk management and supervision responsibilities, compounding the day-to-day stress that is faced by principals in dealing with negative behaviour and challenging situations in the school environment.

The annual Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey from Australian Catholic University (ACU), published March 2024 and involving over 2,300 principals, has revealed the ‘worst recorded levels of physical violence, threats of violence, and bullying’ against principals in the history of the survey, according to a media release by the ACU. Principals report stress due to heavy workloads, a lack of time to focus on teaching and learning, mental health of students and mental health of staff.

In the United Kingdom, there is also growing discourse on whether overworked principals could initiate legal action for “moral injury”, a psychological condition historically reserved for active soldiers. Moral injury is the intense psychological distress done to a person’s conscience when they perpetrate, witness, or fail to prevent acts that transgress their own ethical code.

Headrest, the 2023 Annual Wellbeing Report on headteachers in England from the Brown Collective, suggests that school leaders are regularly faced with having to make the ‘least bad choice’ due to budget limitations, staff shortages or other constraints, in decisions that can go against deeply held beliefs and principles. Moral injury can arise from balancing the competing interests of various stakeholders (students, parents, teachers and the community) or witnessing or being unable to prevent harm to students.

Limits on mental health injury claims

A Victorian Auditor-General’s Office report from June 2023 shows that mental injury was consistently the highest cause of principals’ workers compensation claims between 2015 and 2021, making up almost half of all claims. Principals took a median of 34.5 workers compensation leave days a year during this period, more than triple other teaching staff, and double non-teaching staff.

The rise in mental health claims has resulted in ‘increasing financial pressure on the WorkCover Scheme’, with the Government claiming that mental injuries represented ‘around 50 per cent of the costs to the Scheme’.

In response, Victoria has tightened criteria for mental injury workers’ compensation claims. The changes started on 31 March 2024 and include, but are not limited to:

  • exclusion for stress and burnout: claims will not be accepted if the mental injury is predominantly caused by stress or burnout as a result of events that are considered typical and are reasonably expected to occur in the course of workers' duties. There is an exception for jobs involving traumatic events on a regular basis (such as ambulance officers and other front line workers); and
  • a new and stricter definition of mental injury , meaning compensation is now only available for mental injuries that cause significant behavioural, cognitive, or physiological disfunction, and must be diagnosed by a medical practitioner (not including a psychologist).

The changes have sparked debate and union backlash over the potential abandonment of workers in need, with the Independent Education Union of Victoria and Tasmania calling them ‘regressive’, and saying they would leave education workers ‘high and dry’.

The impact of the more stringent criteria for workers compensation, and whether this will motivate claims for “moral injury”, is yet to be seen.

Schools are generally well aware of the duty of care they owe to students. However, schools should consider whether staff adequately understand this duty, and that the duty does not ‘clock on’ when the first bell rings, and end when the students depart the classroom for the day. Leaders and staff should be trained in what the duty looks like and how it may apply in practice.

Schools are also generally aware of the duty they owe to workers while at work. However, schools may not be aware of this developing area of law in relation to “moral injury”. With workers’ compensation claims being narrowed in Victoria, and principals finding themselves ‘being asked to do more with less’, leading to a looming mass exodus of even the most experienced and battle-hardened educators , this is an area which may develop further over the coming years.

These annual rankings are a cornerstone in the field, influencing decisions that range from student applications to institutional funding and providing a glimpse into the current state of affairs in the world of higher education. This list can provide helpful insights into the relative merits of the schools students may be considering adding to their college lists. In order to use this list effectively, however, it is important to understand the nuances of the ranking system and the factors considered therein.

Here is a breakdown of the rankings’ methodology, as well as key takeaways from this year’s list:

These rankings offer quantitative data students can consider when building their college lists, providing a fairly comprehensive picture of universities’ academic prowess and institutional reach. That being said, students using the rankings to build their college lists should note that many of these factors do not capture the qualitative aspects of students’ experiences.

Key Takeaways from the 2024–25 Rankings

1. The number of universities considered rose by more than 10%.

This year, 2,250 universities across over 100 countries were considered—up more than ten percent from the 2,000 schools considered in the previous ranking.

2. Harvard University lands on top.

As in the last cycle, Harvard University claimed the #1 spot in the global rankings list. This prestigious accolade reflects Harvard's unparalleled academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and global influence. Known for its distinguished faculty, cutting-edge facilities, and a tradition of innovation, Harvard continues to set the standard in higher education, making it the leading choice for students and scholars worldwide.

3. The U.S. dominates the rankings for another year.

Nearly half of the top 50 schools in the ranking are located in the U.S., totaling 24 of the top 50 on the rankings list. Additionally, four out of the top five are U.S. schools: Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley. This remarkable achievement underscores the global prestige of U.S. universities, known for their world-class research, innovative academic programs, and extensive resources.

4. UT Austin and Brown University dropped in the rankings.

Both Brown University and The University of Texas at Austin surprisingly dropped in the rankings, falling out of the top 50. Given both schools’ excellence, this shift demonstrates the fierce competition for top spots in the rankings this year.

5. U.S. News and World Report adds new subjects to the rankings.

This year, four new disciplines were added to the subject-specific rankings, including: ecology; green and sustainable science and technology; environmental engineering; and marine and freshwater biology. These additions not only demonstrate the ranking system’s commitment to reflecting the most relevant information in higher education today, but also provide a glimpse into recent trends and changes in the disciplinary offerings at the most prestigious universities in the world.

The 2024–2025 U.S. News and World Report Rankings offer students valuable information regarding the trends in the global higher education landscape. While students should take their personal preferences and the intangible elements of a school’s culture that draw them to a specific school into account, these rankings can be a helpful first step for students as they set their collegiate goals and assemble their college lists.
