Apple re-launches online education store with expansive design refresh.

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Apple on Tuesday announced a new version of its online Education Store, which comes with a new design similar to the main Apple Online Store introduced in 2021 . The new webpage highlights all the Apple products that students can get at a discount.

Apple’s new online Education Store

For those unfamiliar, qualified students and teachers can buy products such as iPad and Mac at a discount. The company is also promoting its traditional Back to School campaign , which offers things like AppleCare+, Gift Cards, and even AirPods to students buying a new Apple product.

“In time for gifting the graduating high school seniors in your life, Apple today launched it’s newly designed  Education Store Online , offering students headed to college and all educators the perfect destination to shop and discover education pricing for Mac, iPad, select accessories and more — including the all new iPad Air and new MacBook Air,” Apple told 9to5Mac .

The new website has specific sections for each product, making it easier to find exactly what you need. It also has an icon to highlight which products are eligible for a student discount. There’s even a section with articles on how to take advantage of the Apple ecosystem at school and college.

Of course, students and teachers can already buy the company’s latest products, such as the M2 iPad Air , M4 iPad Pro , and M3 MacBook Air from the Apple Education Store.

How-To Geek

How to get apple's education discount on a mac or ipad.

Apple offers special education pricing for Macs and iPads. Homeschool teachers, college students, and faculty can take advantage of it. Here's how.

Quick Links

Who is apple's education discount for, how do you get apple education pricing, how much do you save, what are the limits, how do you prove you're eligible, why you shouldn't abuse apple's education pricing, what about apple education pricing outside of the united states.

Are you a homeschool teacher, college student, parent of a college student, K-12 teacher, or faculty member? If so, Apple offers discounted Education Pricing on Macs and iPads. Here's how to save some cash on your Apple hardware purchase.

According to Apple's sales terms , the following people are eligible to take advantage of the education discount in the USA:

  • Homeschool teachers teaching K-12 students.
  • K-12 teachers and other employees of K-12 institutions. Even school board members are eligible.
  • Students at higher education institutions, including students who have been accepted to a college or university but aren't yet attending.
  • Parents of higher education students provided that they're purchasing the hardware on behalf of their child.
  • Faculty and staff at higher education institutions.

Apple says that these products are not for resale.

Here's the best part: Getting Apple's education discount is actually pretty simple. You just have to go to the right place on Apple's website.

To start shopping, head to Apple's Education Store website. Choose the products that you want to buy, check out, and buy them. It's that simple.

But how much money can you save with the Education Store? Well, as of Nov. 27, 2020, the discounts are as follows:

  • MacBook Air : $899 on the Education Store vs. $999 normally ( save $100 )
  • MacBook Pro : $1,199 on the Education Store vs. $1,299 normally ( save $100 )
  • Mac mini : $679 on the Education Store vs. $699 normally ( save $20 )
  • iMac : $1,049 on the Education Store vs. $1,099 normally ( save $50 )
  • iMac Pro : $4,599 on the Education Store vs. $4,999 normally ( save $400 )
  • Mac Pro : $5,599 on the Education Store vs. $5,999 normally ( save $400 )
  • Pro Display XDR : $4,599 on the Education Store vs. $4,999 normally ( save $400 )
  • iPad Pro : $749 on the Education Store vs. $799 normally ( save $50 )
  • iPad Air : $549 on the Education Store vs. $599 normally ( save $50 )
  • iPad : $309 on the Education Store vs. $329 normally ( save $20 )
  • iPad mini : $379 on the Education Store vs. $399 normally ( save $20 )

Your savings will vary depending on the model you choose. For example, on some more expensive iMac models, you can save $100 instead of $50.

Of course, the products and discounts available may vary over time.

There are limits on how much you can buy from the Education Store. According to Apple's terms, each individual has the following purchase limits as of November 2020:

  • Desktop : one per year
  • Mac mini : one per year
  • MacBook : one per year
  • iPad : three per year

The limits reset each academic school year.

In the U.S., you don't actually have to provide proof of your eligibility at the time of purchase, although Apple might contact you to request some sort of proof if they judge it necessary.

If you're a student, teacher, or faculty member at an educational institution, you may want to use your email address for that institution to place the order. A .edu email address will make it pretty clear that you're eligible.

While it may sound easy for anyone to get the discount, we highly recommend that you not abuse this system. Don't order from the Education Store unless you're actually eligible.

In its terms, Apple reserves the right to charge your credit card the difference between the normal price of the hardware and the education price you paid. If you don't pay with a credit card, Apple says it reserves the right to invoice you for the difference in price and sue you if you don't pay.

These terms are likely aimed at people who are really abusing this system---for example, resellers who order the maximum number of products every year and sell them elsewhere for cash. However, if you're eligible for the education pricing, don't worry about it.

Apple does offer education pricing in some other countries. If you live in another country, search the web for the "Apple Education Store" in your country. The discounts and eligibility may differ from country to country.

Other countries may require more verification as well. For example, Apple's Education Store in the U.K. requires you to verify your status with UNiDAYS before ordering.

Smartwatches and Atrial Fibrillation: What Works and What Needs Improvement?

May 29, 2024   |   Kevin Buda, DO

Expert Analysis

Quick Takes

  • Clinicians will increasingly encounter heart rhythm data generated from consumer-grade devices.
  • Consumer-grade smartphone-paired devices and smartwatches have very high sensitivity and specificity for atrial fibrillation.
  • The specificity for arrhythmias with regular R-R intervals is very poor.

As the availability of smartphone-paired devices and smartwatches increases, clinicians will increasingly encounter data generated from consumer-grade devices. This expert analysis reviews several common consumer-grade devices, their specificity for detecting atrial fibrillation (AF), and the limitations of their use.

Most consumer-grade devices for detecting arrhythmias use photoplethysmography (PPG). This technology measures volumetric changes in blood flow on the basis of the intensity of reflected light measured from the skin's surface. This signal generates peaks proportional to pulsatile blood flow, with the peak-to-peak interval proportional to the R-R interval. Given this method's ease of detecting irregularity, PPG technology has primarily been validated for detecting AF.

The broadened availability of consumer-grade devices may increase the detection of AF in the subclinical phase. With stroke as the initial manifestation of AF in almost one-quarter of cases, early AF detection may help relieve its burden as a leading cause of disability in the United States. 1

The Accuracy

  • Apple Watch. The Apple Watch (Apple Inc., Cupertino, California) monitors heart rate and rhythm using PPG. Newer models can also record an on-demand single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). The Apple Heart Study investigators enrolled >400,000 participants without AF. People who received an irregular pulse notification had telemedicine visits with a clinician and received an ambulatory ECG monitor. Of the 2,064 patients with irregular pulse notifications, the positive predictive value (PPV) for AF was 84%. 2 Notably, Apple recently received a cease-and-desist order on some Apple Watches after the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) ruled that Apple Watch technology infringes on oxygen saturation patents held by Masimo Corporation (Irvine, California). The cease-and-desist order on relevant Apple Watches is scheduled to take effect on December 26. This order may significantly reduce the number of Apple Watches that are available for purchase until patent issues have been resolved.
  • Kardiamobile. Kardiamobile (AliveCor, Mountain View, California) is a small handheld device that can provide a 30-sec single-lead ECG. One study included monitoring participants three times daily and whenever they felt palpitations, with findings of a higher rate of AF detection with the Kardiamobile device than with 24-hour ECGs (9.4% vs. 2%). 3 In another study, >1,000 patients without a history of AF were randomized to standard care or twice-weekly monitoring with Kardiamobile, with findings of a 3.8% detection rate for AF in the Kardiamobile arm compared with <1% in the standard-care arm. 4
  • Fitbit. Fitbit (Google, Mountain View, California) is a wrist-worn device with PPG technology with 37 million monthly users as of 2022. 5 Similar to the Apple Watch, some newer models also incorporate the ability to perform a single-lead ECG. The Fitbit Heart Study had a similar design to the Apple Heart Study; >400,000 participants enrolled. Routine ambulatory ECG monitoring occurred in patients with irregular rhythm notifications. Among 1,057 participants with an irregular heart rate notification and an analyzable confirmatory ambulatory ECG, the PPV of irregular rhythms for AF when using consumer-grade screening with reflex to medical-grade confirmation was 98.2%. 6

Overall Efficacy

The findings of two meta-analyses included high specificity (94%) and sensitivity (96%) for AF detection with smartphones and noninferiority of smartwatches compared with medical-grade devices. 7,8

Benefits Compared With Medical-Grade Monitoring

  • They are more widely available. 4
  • They do not require a prescription.
  • They can detect arrhythmias independently of ECG checks when the patient is free of symptoms.
  • They have very high sensitivity and specificity for detecting AF. 7,8
  • They can help monitor patients with established asymptomatic AF to assess AF rate and burden.

Limitations Compared With Medical-Grade Devices

  • They are not worn continuously and need to be removed for charging. Therefore, their sensitivity for infrequent paroxysmal arrhythmias is lower.
  • The specificity for arrhythmias with regular R-R intervals is very poor. 9
  • Monitoring in patients with a low pretest probability of arrhythmias increases the false-positive rate.
  • There are no guideline recommendations on what to do with information from consumer-grade devices.
  • The large volume of data obtained from consumer-grade devices may further contribute to an already strained clinician workforce.

Future Directions

Given the higher false-positive rate in patients with a low pretest probability of AF, future studies need to determine the patients most likely to benefit from ambulatory monitoring. Further, it is unknown whether increased AF detection on consumer-grade heart rhythm monitoring increases appropriate anticoagulation prescription or lowers cardioembolic stroke risk.

The ongoing Heartline Study will assess the impact of AF detection with the Apple Watch on clinical outcomes. The primary endpoint is the time from randomization to the detection of AF. Secondary endpoints include health resource utilization, cost-effectiveness, and a composite including stroke, heart failure hospitalization, and all-cause death. 10

Will Broadcom Be Worth More Than Apple by 2040?

May 30, 2024 — 04:00 am EDT

Written by Leo Sun for The Motley Fool  ->

Broadcom 's (NASDAQ: AVGO) stock has soared about 1,900% over the past 10 years. The chipmaker, which was known as Avago until it bought the original Broadcom in 2016, impressed investors with its robust growth and bold acquisitions.

With a market cap of $650 billion, Broadcom is now one of the most valuable chipmakers in the world. However, it's still much smaller than its top customer, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) , which has a market cap of $2.9 trillion. Let's see if the growing chipmaker has a shot at overtaking its market-leading client by 2040.

Digital rendering of a semiconductor.

How fast is Broadcom growing?

Before it bought Broadcom, Avago had already purchased a long list of smaller companies to expand its portfolio of wireless, optical, and data storage chips. By acquiring Broadcom, it gained more mobile, networking, wireless, and industrial chips.

Broadcom subsequently expanded into the infrastructure software market by acquiring CA Technologies in 2018, Symantec's enterprise security division in 2019, and the cloud software giant VMware in late 2023. It expects its takeover of VMware to gradually reduce the weight of its semiconductor business , which accounted for 79% of its revenue in fiscal 2023 (ended October 2023), to roughly 50%. That acquisition will also reduce Broadcom's dependence on Apple, which contributed 20% of the chipmaker's revenue in the past two fiscal years through its purchases of wireless chips.

From fiscal 2016 to fiscal 2023, Broadcom's adjusted revenue rose at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15%, its adjusted gross margin expanded from 60.5% to 74.7%, and its adjusted earnings per share ( EPS ) increased at a CAGR of 21%.

Analysts expect Broadcom's revenue and adjusted EPS to grow 41% and 11%, respectively, in fiscal 2024 as it integrates VMware, it sells more AI-oriented chips, and the macro environment improves. In fiscal 2025, analysts forecast its revenue and adjusted EPS to rise 14% and 22%, respectively, as it fully laps its acquisition of VMware.

Yet Broadcom doesn't look like a bargain right now at 30 times forward earnings . Its valuation was likely inflated by the bullish sentiment regarding its sales of AI chips, which quadrupled year over year to $2.3 billion (31% of its semiconductor revenue and 19% of its total revenue) in the first quarter of fiscal 2024. That helped to offset its slower sales of enterprise and telecom chips. It expects its AI chip sales to continue rising and account for 35% of its full-year semiconductor revenue.

That's a bright outlook, but investors shouldn't put Broadcom in the same category as Nvidia , which is growing significantly faster, generates most of its revenue from AI chips, and trades at just over 40 times forward earnings.

Could Broadcom overtake Apple by 2040?

It's impossible to tell what will happen to Broadcom over the next 16 years. It could "deworsify" its business with too many acquisitions, struggle to keep pace with its competitors, and lose major customers like Apple.

But assuming Broadcom trades at a more reasonable forward multiple of 20 and boosts its adjusted EPS at a steady CAGR of 15% from fiscal 2024 to fiscal 2040, its share price could rise to about $9,000. That would represent a six-bagger from its current price and boost its market cap to $4.2 trillion, which would make it worth more than Apple today.

But to reach the same market cap, Apple's stock would only need to rally by less than 50% over the next 16 years. Apple might be in the middle of a cyclical slowdown right now, but it will likely expand its business with new hardware products, subscription-based services, investments, and big acquisitions over the following two decades. It should also continue to plow billions of dollars into its buybacks to boost its EPS. Therefore, I think Apple's stock could still easily double or triple by 2040.

Broadcom probably won't be worth more than Apple by 2040, but it could generate much bigger gains from today's levels as it expands its semiconductor and software businesses. Nevertheless, investors should still keep a close eye on Broadcom's expansion strategies to make sure it isn't sacrificing its margins or taking on too much debt to grow its revenue.
