Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

  • Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

8 The Project Framework

The story continues….

Harry and Physicus spent hours exploring research and finding some fascinating information. Nothing directly explained why a Siamese cat would not have an interest in catching mice. However, Physicus found a study in which researchers concluded that the obesity of small animals was related to their playing and hunting habits. The more overweight the animal, the less they played or hunted.

“This makes sense,” argued Physicus. “When an animal is not hungry, it does not need to be very active in hunting food.”

Another study interestingly connected the number of prey to the lack of engagement in the hunt. Researchers found that a lizard would hunt for a single cricket placed in its cage.  However, the lizard would not hunt any of the crickets when 100 were released simultaneously.  Further, researchers noted when 10 crickets were released into the lizard’s cage, they were immediately hunted and eaten.

Physicus was so excited. “You see,” he exclaimed, “somewhere between 10 and 100 crickets is where the lizard lost interest in the hunt!”

“I wonder if this has anything to do with how Pickles behaves?” Harry said.  Possibilities, but no answers, thought Harry.

Physicus continued, “Now we have two ways we can use to think about the problem. Maybe Pickles is overweight or overwhelmed.”

Interpreting the Story

Physicus and Harry investigated research findings to see what they could learn about the problem. What they discovered were two possible reasons for Pickles’ behavior. This information gave Harry and Physicus two ways to think about the problem. Harry and Physicus will choose one of these ways to provide a direction for exploring published theories that are related to the problem.  The friends will choose one theory as the basis for their inquiry. The chosen theory guides the development of the research project. This is called a Project Framework.

The Project Framework

The role of the Project Frame is to outline how the problem will be studied. This component details the perspective or angle from which the research story will be viewed. The Project Frame provides the lens for how the researcher will focus their attention on certain features of the problem and disregard others.

A starting point to frame a project is use a published theory. However, advanced researchers may base their projects on more than one theory, so you may encounter this when reading published articles. In educational research, theories about learning, development, cognition, psychology, teaching, etc., are used to frame how an educational problem is studied. Examples of published theories are Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, Knowles’ Adult Learning Theory, Theories of Behavior, Teaching as Inquiry, and Professional Development Theories. The Project Frame is bounded by the chosen, published theory.

A published theory is chosen by how it connects to the research problem. The connection can be found in the Background of the Problem, such as a feature of the setting or participants, or the theory connects to your hypothesis about how to solve the problem. For example, if the problem occurs in a classroom, a social learning theory might be in order; if the problem occurs in a rural school, we might select the psychology of poverty to frame the study. If we hypothesize that professional development (PD) training is needed to solve the research problem, then we would choose an appropriate theory of PD.

The theory provides the parameters for how a project is developed. The theory acts as guard rails to keep the methodology focused and to ensure the purpose of the study is realized. Different frames for the same problem will yield very different results. Think about the problem of low test scores, as an example. If a social cognitive learning theory (learner-focused) is used to frame a project involving low test scores, the project design will be different from the design of a project involving low test scores using a professional development theory (teacher-focused).

The writing of the Project Frame includes a full description of the published theory citing the original theorist’s work. The writer must explain why this theory is the best choice to frame your problem. The specific aspects of the theory that relate to your problem are discussed. The discussion details how the theory relates to the background or context of the problem, and how the theory connects to the purpose of the capstone project.

Telling the Research Story

The Project Frame explains the “point of view” of the research story. It is based on a published theory. In our example problem of low test scores, the point of view was from a social cognitive learning perspective. This point-of-view is focused on how low test scores can be explored by using a student-focused perspective that employs social cognitive strategies.

The elements in this heading can be written in a variety of ways, however, the elements must be there. Often, the Project Frame is written by presenting the theory, how it addresses the problem, and why it is the best choice first. This is followed by how it relates to the background and/or context and then how it connects to the purpose of the project. In other cases, the theory is presented first, followed by how it addresses the problem, is the best choice, relates to the history and current situation, and ends with how the theory supports the purpose of the project.

Since the Project Frame functions as the point of view in the research story, elements of the theory or framing perspective are found throughout the rest of the capstone project. This means that the other components of the research story are told from this point of view. The perspective of the Project Frame keeps your research story structured and on track.

The Project Frame component appears in Chapter 1 of the capstone project. The framework used to develop a capstone project can be a theory, or it can be related to the type of practical product the project aims to create or implement. For example, professional development training, informational literature (handbook), or policy development.

When conceptualizing and developing your capstone project design outline, you will be exploring your project components, structuring your outline format and establishing the scaffolding for how the objectives of your concept will be met in your finalized project.

Your project design outline will serve as a planning tool as you move forward with your project work. It will establish a path for managing your project successfully so that you are efficient with your time and effective with your efforts.

At this point, you have a solid project concept, comprehensive project objectives, and relevant resources that you have reviewed. While this is extremely important information, the key to a successful capstone project is putting it all together in a useful, professionally presented manner. This is where a project design outline comes in. I like to think of the project design outline as the framework of a house or the scaffolding of a skyscraper. When you frame out a house, you bring the one-dimensional blueprints to three-dimensional life. You establish the physical framework for where the kitchen will be, you erect walls to indicate where each bedroom will be, and you structure the roof so that everything is solidly connected. This is similar to what the outline of your project will do for your finalized project. It will provide an outlined structure for how your project intends to achieve each of the objectives you have established, and your literature review will inform the best practices that you will apply.

First , you will want to establish your purpose. Why are you completing this project? Secondly , you will want to establish your intended audience. Who will ultimately be reading your capstone project? While your first audience may be your capstone course instructor, you may eventually plan on presenting your work to a manager within your organization. Thirdly , you will want to break out individual objectives and identify the following for each of them:

  • The tasks that you must complete to meet this objective
  • The application of best practices as they relate to this objective and
  • The resources or operational components of the objective

Fourthly , you will be designing a simple timeline which illustrates a date by which each objective should be completed. For those of you preparing your capstone for roll-out in your workplace, your project implementation and evaluation will continue beyond the end date of our course, so many of your dates will be outside the borders of our 10- or 12-week timeframe, which is perfectly fine. For those of you researching a managerial topic such as effective leadership styles, a simple timeline or schedule showing when you will complete each section of your capstone project is sufficient. This section is a mechanism for keeping you on track. Without scheduled deadlines, it is easy to procrastinate. A schedule helps you to identify priorities and keeps you on a clear path to meeting your goals. There are many tools and software programs available to help you organize your thought when designing a project outline. You’ll notice that in the reference outlines, the students have taken their major project objectives and broken them each down into the tasks that must be completed to meet the objective, the application of best practices as they relate to the objective, and the resources needed to achieve the objective. My capstone project is to design a 2-week online professional development workshop using existing classroom best practice videos on instructional moves website. I developed the structure of the workshop and curated the content to be used in each module. Particularly, I designed one module with detailed content.

Design Framework

At the beginning of the design process, the first thing I did was to decide the design framework. I have considered three frameworks: Design Thinking, ADDIE and Backward Design. After considering the constrains and the context, I landed on Backward Design framework. Below is my analysis.

  • Constraints: Both Design Thinking and ADDIE frameworks require integrating feedback from stakeholders constantly during the design process. In this project, I have two main stakeholders- learners and Instructional Moves team. Although I was able to receive feedback from my team constantly, due to the time and cost constrains in this project, I was not able to test with potential learners constantly during the design process.
  • Context: Design Thinking works best especially in innovative context. It also emphasizes people the most. In this online training project, we prefer to follow a certain structure to align with previous course. Although learners are important consideration in decision making, content/knowledge is our key component.
  • ADDIE emphasizes more on the design process while Backwards Design emphasizes more on the goal of each design stage. I think these two frameworks are very similar. They come from different angels of definition but they follow through similar process.
  • Although I followed Backward Design framework, I was able to leverage some concepts from Design Thinking and iterate based on Instructional Team’s feedback during the design process.

Learner and Context Analysis

The first step in Backward Design framework is to know your students. Instructional Moves team has launched one similar online course last year and collected basic student information. I also interviewed 5 teaching fellows who are our targeted audience. I used the Audience Analysis Worksheet shared in the class to help with my learner analysis.

According to previous students’ information and my interview, 70% audience are higher education professors and 30% are K-12 teachers. The majority audience are from U.S. with sufficient English level. They have part-time or full-time jobs therefore they are very constrained on time. They are motivated teachers and they are looking for new teaching approaches that can be applied right away. They are unfamiliar with at least one of the following teaching approaches- Case Method, Simulation, and Case-based Collaborative Learning. They have high expectation for Harvard. We expect them to finish the course with 10-12 hours over 2 weeks.

To better empathize learner’s needs, I created a learner persona. Learner “Jay” is a fictional teacher composite based on demographic, previous student survey and interviews conducted with targeted audience group.

Jay, 30 years old, was born and raised in U.S. He received his PhD degree in Economics from an American university last year and became a new teacher at a U.S. college. He teaches Micro Economics to freshmen. Jay has been actively seeking and trying new teaching approaches to make his class more interesting and engaging. He does not want to lecture the whole class but that is how he learned Micro Economics. This is his motivation to take an online Professional Development workshop. He has heard of Case Method and Simulation and has basic understanding of what the class look like. He has never heard of Case-based Collaborative Learning. He has never experienced classrooms using any of these methods as a student.

He wanted to take an online workshop because he is very busy teaching and doing research every day as a new teacher at college. He does not have time to participate in an in-person workshop. He expects to be able to use what he learns online immediately in his class. He is very interested in Harvard online courses because he thinks this means high quality of content. He finds it very appealing to watch Harvard professors’ best practice in real classroom setting.

When analyzing learner’s persona, I also paid attention to their learning context – what is it like when they are learning? They might be using fragmented time on buses/subways during commute, or during lunch break. They are usually interested but also somewhat tired. They are learning online but they will perform in an in-person formal teaching environment. What the learner profile tell me are:

  • Focus on higher education context but also provide access to K12 examples.
  • Focus on basic knowledge of the teaching methods but provide access to advanced level resources.
  • Learning unit should be small enough so they can fit in their busy schedule.
  • Focus on practice, not theory.
  • Content needs to be engaging.

Learning Goals and Outcomes

According to the leaner’s persona, Jay wants to be able to apply these methods in practice. He expects the class to be introductory instead of advanced level. Therefore, the main learning goal is that learners are able to apply one of the three methods that they have not used before in their teaching practice. There are three detailed learning outcomes:

  • Learners are able to identify at least one similarity among these methods
  • Learners are able to identify at least one difference between any two methods
  • Learners can develop a lesson plan using one of the three methods

Learning Assessment

Formative Assessment:

  • Pre-assessment to surface learner’s understanding of the content. Based on learner’s persona, they have heard of some of these teaching methods but have limited knowledge of how to apply. This assessment will help learners prepare for conceptual change. It is also to promote metacognition.
  • Reflect and connect strategies in each module to their past experience or future plan. Learners will need to include the similarities or differences they learned in the module. Since the main goal is to apply what they learn in this workshop, this assessment will help learners constantly make meaning of the content. It is part of the conceptual change process.

Summative Assessment:

  • Choice by learners to design a lesson plan using any of these three methods with current or future teaching content to demonstrate their skills of designing and implementing teaching through problems. This assessment aligns with the main learning goal – learners are able to apply one of the three methods that they have not used before in their teaching practice. Peers will also provide feedback using an assessment rubric. I want to use authentic assessment with which learners show how they would apply in real world.

Learning Theories

Cognitivism

Cognitivism emphasizes connecting new knowledge to existing knowledge and making knowledge meaningful ( Ertmer& Newby, 2008). In my instructional design, I applied this theory through tasks that requires learners to think about their current teaching methods and how the new strategies can fit in their existing teaching context.

Another application of this theory is how I structured the workshop. When designing the learning sequence, I considered two different ways to structure it. One is to present the knowledge based on “teacher, student and content” triangle. According to my design advisor, this is a common framework in instructional design. Another one is to follow the common process when learners apply the new teaching method: planning, executing and making meaning. I decided to use the latter one because this fits the mental model learners already have.

Constructivism

Constructivists believe that learners should construct their own understanding. Some strategies include situating tasks in real world context, using real examples, and collaborative learning to share alternative views ( Ertmer & Newby, 2008). In this online workshop, the main content is videos from the real classroom. The summative assessment task is to construct a lesson plan that learners will use in reality. I also designed community discussion promoting sharing the peer learning. Adult learners are more motivated by learning that is relevant to their context.

Learning and Transfer

Since the learning context is different from performing context, I expect learners to be able to transfer what they learn into the performing context. There are different characteristics of learning and transfer. I particularly considered the implication of this one: “Knowledge that is overly contextualized can reduce transfer; abstract representations of knowledge can help promote transfer (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000)

When designing the structure of the content, I tried to abstract the common theme from the three different methods. As mentioned earlier, I decided to follow the mental framework of planning, executing and making meaning. However, there are three methods. If we go over each method with this framework, it will take too long for students to learn. Besides, the reason we put these three methods in one workshop is because they share common themes. Therefore, the structure I used is to categorize the module by similarities and differences. I expect to promote transfer by abstracting the characteristics of the three methods.

Media Choices

The main media in this online workshop is asynchronous videos and text. I think video is the best choice to deliver the content of this workshop comparing to audio and animation. In this workshop, we are teaching adult learners how to teach using three different methods. The content is about practice in real higher education classrooms. The most straightforward way is for learners to be able to see and mimic.

The videos I am using include both classroom footage as well as interviews with professors and students. They not only show how to carry out the teaching methods, but also the motivation and rationale behind. Each video is less than 5 minutes so learners can use fragmented time to learn.

From affordance perspective, video production is relatively high cost. However, since all the videos I am using are already produced, the video production cost for this project is zero. These videos can be applied in different context like online workshop, in-person workshop or general online resources. Therefore, I think the investment of making these videos is justified. To make the content more accessible, I included audio file and transcript for downloading.

The other media being used in this workshop is text including text content and readings. All the text and reading are complementary to the video content. According to Mayer’s 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning, “people learn better when cues that highlight the organization of the essential material are added”. On-screen text in this workshop shows the structure of the learning and also provides the name of the concepts learners are going to learn from the videos.

One media I would like to mention is Virtual Reality. I would like to test out the effectiveness of using VR vs. video to deliver this workshop. VR experience enables learners to feel like they are learning in a real classroom which is the context they are performing the skills. At current stage, the cost of VR is very high. But I believe as technology develops, one day the cost of VR will not be a constraint any more. At that time, should we implement VR learning because it is a better media in delivering this content?

This course will be launched on Canvas. Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) used in Harvard community. Since this workshop is going to be part of Harvard continuous education programs, it is going to use Canvas as the platform.

When designing the workshop, I considered the advantages and limitations of Canvas. One advantage of using Canvas is that this is the standard platform many educational institutions are using. For online learners, it is important to reduce extraneous information load. By using a common platform, learners can focus more on the content. From the perspective of the providers, school-wide LMS has strong IT support. The familiarity makes it easy for the team to upload information to the platform.

One limitation of Canvas is that we have to use Yellow Dig as the community discussion board. Students are not able to comment under each page of content directly. Instead, they need to move to a separate forum. Ideally, I would like to have learners comment right next to the content so that they can see what others think on the content they are reading or watching.

Implication for my future work

Before this project, I have never designed an online professional development workshop. I have participated in the development of in-person professional development workshop teaching similar content. Below are some of my learnings that I will carry over to my future instructional design projects.

  • Learner-centered design. Use learner profile tools to analyze and know my learners. Regardless of design framework, I should always consider how to meet learners where they are. For online learning, we should think about learners’ learning context and accessibility of learning technology.
  • Learning theories. Professional Development usually focuses more on practical skills. I want to consider learning theories that work best for the learning goals and design activities accordingly.
  • Platforms. When design online workshop, I want to evaluate the affordability, accessibility and functions of different platforms. Choose the platform that fits the learning theories I am using in the design.
