Hundreds of Fans Wept in the Street for Musician DJ Arafat, Who Died at the Age of 33

Allison Cacich - Author

Aug. 13 2019, Updated 5:03 p.m. ET

One of Ivory Coast’s most beloved musicians has died at the age of 33. On August 12, DJ Arafat — whose real name is Ange Didier Houon — succumbed to injuries he sustained in a motorbike accident the day before. He leaves behind his girlfriend Carmen and their two children.

Reports state that the popular Coupé-Décalé artist suffered a skull fracture after his motorcycle collided with a car in the Angre neighborhood of Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast.

Though Americans may not know his name, DJ Arafat's incredible legacy lives on, especially in French-speaking countries around the world. Here’s what you need to know about the star and the impact his death has had on fans.

Who was DJ Arafat?

The performer was born into a musical family — he was the son of Ivorian singer Tina Glamor. His late father was also a musician and sound engineer. Throughout his career, DJ Arafat released a total of 11 albums, most of which were in the dance music genre Coupé-Décalé, earning him the nickname "King of Coupé-Décalé."

His most recent music video , which was uploaded on July 24 and features French rapper Naza, currently has over 1.7 million views on YouTube. Naza expressed his shock over the DJ’s passing and the beginning of his message on Instagram roughly translates to "My brother, you left too early."

Local artists and politicians also offered their condolences on social media. Ivorian producer Ickx Fontaine told the AFP news agency , "We are all in shock. He was a real singer and a drummer... he gave a new breath of life to Coupé-Décalé."

"He was a legend of Ivorian music. He gave concerts all over Africa," TV host and hip-hop producer Ozone added. "He had a natural charisma. He will remain a force for Ivorian and African music."

Nigerian singer Davido, who previously performed with the DJ in Abidjan, tweeted , "Woke up this morning, still can’t believe you gone! I love you brother... I will be there for your family as long as I’m here! Like they say, the best flowers are picked first! Enjoy heaven."

In a statement on Facebook, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara referred to DJ Arafat as an "icon of the youth" and an "ambassador of Ivorian music and culture." He wrote, "I extend my sincere condolences to [his] mother, [his] children, [his] biological and artistic families as well as to all [his] fans."

In his own post , the country’s defense minister, Hamed Babayoko, stated, "'DJ Arafat,' my son is gone. I personally fell down on his remains this morning. I am deeply saddened. This is a heavy loss for African culture. I address my prayers for the rest of his soul."

Fans gathered outside the hospital after hearing about DJ Arafat’s death.

According to Aljazeera , around 1,000 fans descended on the hospital where the celebrity was taken after the accident, weeping and chanting "Arafat cannot die."

Later on, CCTV footage of the crash began circulating online, showing the father of two’s wrecked bike. "It hurts me so much, I cannot believe it," one fan named Estelle Oulaye told the AFP.

Our thoughts are with all those who loved DJ Arafat.

Remembering dj arafat – six essential songs.

Music In Africa Foundation's picture

DJ Arafat , the popular musician who died in a motorcycle accident on August 12, was an icon of coupé-décalé, a genre and movement from his native Ivory Coast popularised by  Douk Saga  in the early 2000s.

biography of dj arafat

Arafat  released many hits in Ivory Coast and beyond throughout his 15-year career. A multi-talented producer, singer, composer and arranger, he never stopped innovating his music by incorporating other genres and sounds such as zouglou, ndombolo and rumba.

As tributes continue to pour in for the late artist, below are six songs that defined his incredible career:

Hommage à Jonathan

Released in 2003, this song is credited as launching DJ Arafat's successful career. The song is dedicated to Jonathan, an Ivorian musician who also died in a motorcycle accident. The song was later included in the album  Renaissance , released in December 2018.

Djessimidjeka

'Djessimidjeka' is a song from Arafat' album Gladiator released in 2010. In the song, DJ Arafat disses his detractors by saying "You tried to kill me but I'm still alive", most probably referring to an accident he was involved in in October 2009.

In 2012, DJ Arafat made his long-awaited comeback with 'Kpankaka', the title track of his album released that year. In 2012, he also won two Kora Music Awards for Best African Artist of the Year and Best Male Artist in West Africa.

In March 2015, DJ Arafat released the video for 'Gbobolor'. The video was an instant hit and quickly reached a million views on YouTube. A year later, he released the mixtape  Yorogang that included a collaboration titled 'Pour les Fans” (For the Fans) with Malian kora player  Sidiki Diabaté .

Enfant Béni

In 'Enfant Béni' DJ Arafat recounts his difficult childhood. "I grew up on the street / My dad was not even around / I grew up on the streets without friends," he sings. In the song, he motivates those going through difficult times to never give up and to always stay strong. The single, released in 2017, is an excerpt from Renaissance , his last album.

This is DJ Arafat's last single, released three months ago, in which he sings about his passion for fast motorbikes.

The legacy of DJ Arafat and how he took the Coupé Décalé sound to the world

DJ Arafat

A night out in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire’s commercial capital, is not complete until you find yourself in a line of Ivorians, all standing side by side facing the giant mirrors that line every dance floor in the city, dancing to a DJ Arafat song.

The untimely death earlier this week of the man dubbed the King of Coupé Décalé left fans stunned as they come to terms with the loss of a charismatic, ground-breaking artist who brought Ivorian dance music to the global stage.

The 33-year old, born Ange Didier Huon, burst onto the musical scene as a DJ in Yopougon, one of Abidjan’s best known nightlife districts. He came from a musical family —his mother was a well-known singer and his father a prominent sound engineer. One of his first hits, Hômmage a Jonathan , was a tribute a friend he lost to a motorcycle accident. This is why, among many reasons, it was particularly tragic Arafat also lost his life a few hours after his own motorcycle collided with a car on Aug. 12.

DJ Arafat on his motorbike

The Coupé Décalé sound and movement started in Paris nightclubs in the early 2000s where it was brought by Ivorian DJs. In Nouchi (Ivorian slang), Coupé Décalé means “to cheat” and “run away” or cut and run. The fun, bass-heavy sound embraced the joie de vivre that typifies Abidjan, a city known for its legendary partying. It also celebrated young resilient Africans who having endured the difficulties of being migrants in Europe, eventually made it big—sometimes by unorthodox means. Hence the concept of cheating the system and getting away with it. It’s an aspirational genre that emerged at the time of the first Ivorian civil war (2002-2007) when dispirited youth needed to believe in the possibility of a better life sometimes in the form of finding fame and fortune abroad.

While DJ Arafat was not the creator of the sound, he took it to the mainstream, first amassing a large following in French-speaking western and central African countries and eventually in Europe and North America where significant African diaspora populations are represented. He was also an early collaborator with the rising Afrobeats sound out of Nigeria and Ghana meaning he had an even more pan-African following.

To many of his youthful fans, DJ Arafat epitomizes the spirit of the sub-genre in that they witnessed his rise to fame and fortune locally. In Coupé Décalé dancing comes first—the popping of champagne bottles, the expensive cars and the fancy houses are merely an aspirational backdrop for the merriment. It is a musical genre that is about people having fun against all odds. DJ Arafat’s raspy, energetic voice carried clubbers along with the frenetic percussive styles, deep bass and repetitive minimalist arrangements.

DJ Arafat is leading example of a generation of young African artists who had taken advantage of the lowered barriers of distribution for pop music with millions of social media followers aggregated across YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and beyond. Even more important has been the ability to maintain strong dedicated fan bases across from Abidjan to Douala but also Paris, London and Montreal.

With 11 albums to his name , the young artist leaves behind a remarkable legacy. His star was rising even higher with several cross-continental collaborations and continental hits in the past years. Last year, he was one of the stars highlighted in an expansion of the world’s largest music company Universal Music across Africa, particularly for the Francophone Africa.

The tributes continue to roll in (from the Ivorian president, Alassane Ouattara, Ivorian football legend, Didier Drogba, hordes of African musicians—especially Francophone musicians who cite him as having influenced their decisions to get into music.) His popularity has seen the signing of a petition with over 70,000 signatures from fans asking he be accorded a state funeral at  Félix Houphouet Boigny stadium in Abidjan.

Top 10 hit songs by DJ Arafat

We at African Vibes also grieve the loss of DJ Arafat, one of Africa’s finest young talents. His song ‘Maplorly’ made it to our top 10 favorite music videos of the week (August 2nd). However, moments of grief also provide a pause for reflection. Rather than dwell on the pain, we want to celebrate his life and keep his memory fresh. Thus, we want to use this time to reflect on his life and contributions to the music industry. To that effect, we compiled a list of his top ten songs.

Sadly, this is one of DJ Arafat’s last contributions to the music industry. Launched on May 10, 2019, this music video has over 4.6 million views on YouTube. The song follows his signature coupé-decalé. However, it also comes with its own dance step that mimics driving a motorbike. This is probably the song that best exemplifies the artist’s love for motorcycle.

DJ ARAFAT MOTO MOTO

Dosabado is one of DJ Arafat’s most successful songs to date. The club banger which was published on June 20, 2018, has over 5.6 million views on YouTube. It is hard to hear this song and not get on your feet. However, it also has a colorful and creative interplay of graphic effects.

DJ ARAFAT DOSABADO afro-décalé

This is street music that also gives you a glimpse of DJ Arafat’s love for motorcycles. The video has a number of motorbike displays. The amount of people in the video also tells you how much people love him and his music. Consequently, it was hard for us to hold back our tears while watching this video. Released on April 10, 2018, the video has over 1.6 million views on YouTube.

Hômmage A Jonathan

DJ Arafat’s love for motorcycles obviously did not start today. Hômmage A Jonathan is one his tracks as a young artist that has a sparing display of motorbikes. Published on December 6, 2012, the track has over 3.7 million views on YouTube. Notwithstanding his young age, Arafat was already showing lots of promise in rap and beats. You could easily predict his future success from this song.

Football stars popularized the dance step of this song. However, you will also find lots of videos of people trying to replicate the dance step. It looks easy until you try it. Arafat’s street videos always attract a large crowd showing you how much people appreciate his music. Published on March 13, 2015, this song already has over 6.9 million views on YouTube.

Je Veux Réaliser

Pandou Koule

This track was done under the Universal Music Africa label. Published on October 23, 2018, this song has over 1.2 million views on YouTube. It also has a couple of comic scenes that will bring a smile to your face. However, you could also try to replicate the energetic dance steps. One thing we noticed about DJ Arafat’s street music videos is its gender neutrality.

DJ Arafat - Pandou Koule

Lékilé is a perfect fusion of traditional African culture and hip-hop. The song features cultural dancers with Arafat breaking in from time to time with rap. This is one of the songs that allow you to experience African culture from an unorthodox perspective. Published on March 7, 2019, the video already has 1.3 million views on YouTube. This song was also done under the Universal Music Africa label.

DJ Arafat - Lékilé Clip Officiel

Arafat also enjoyed a number of high-profile collaborations. However, one of his foremost was with Davido. Published on October 31, 2014, this track has over 6 million views on YouTube. This club banger has a bit of drama to it. The moves pulled by the dancers is also hard to ignore.

buy followers

DJ Arafat , professionally known as an influential Ivorian DJ, singer, and producer, was born Ange Didier Houon in the Abidjan suburb of Yopougon to Tina Glamour (mother), a popular singer, and Pierre Houon (father), a deceased musician and sound engineer. He became a fixture of the coupé-décalé movement in the early 2010s and remained at the fore of the scene until his death in 2019.

Arafat, who was born on January 26, 1986, is most known for his distinctive combination of dance, R&B, and hip-hop. During his 15-year career, he recorded 11 albums and a slew of songs, including the successes “Dosabado,” “Kpangor,” “Zoropoto,” “Enfant Beni,” and “Moto, Moto.”

He was well-known in French-speaking Africa, having won the “Best Artist of the Year” title at the Coupé-Decalé Awards in 2016 and 2017.

Arafat began his music career as a DJ in Yopougon in the early 2000s when he was only 14 years old. He began recording albums in the early 2000s, taking his pseudonym after Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, a nickname given to him by some Lebanese acquaintances.

By 2009, he had established himself as one of the most popular African singers in Francophone nations across the world, and he had begun to gain traction in other areas as well, with the BBC dubbing him the “king” of coupé-décalé.

Fans continued to respond to subsequent attempts like 2017’s “Yorogang” and 2018″Renaissance,” but disaster was on the horizon.

Arafat, a die-hard motorcycle fan, scored one of his biggest successes with the tune “Moto Moto” in early 2019. Unfortunately, he died later that month from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.

On 12 August 2019, Arafat died in hospital after a motorcycle accident in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. His motorcycle was said to have collided with a car in the Angre neighborhood on Sunday, 11 August 2019. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital in Abidjan for a skull fracture before eventually dying at around 8:00  a.m. UTC on 12 August 2019.

After the news of his death spread, on 12 August 2019 around 1,000 of his fans assembled in Cocody suburb near the hospital where he died and mourned his death chanting "Arafat cannot die". After his burial some fans exhumed his grave after a rumor sufficed that his body was given to cult members. Police struggled to manage the crowd gathered in the area. A crowd of his fans also gathered around his house singing some of his hits. Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, the Ivorian Culture Minister condoled his death and a tribute was held in his honour.

He was awarded the "best artist of the year" at the Coupé-Decalé Awards in 2016 and 2017. He also won two WatsUp TV Africa Music Video Awards in 2016.

He was considered one of the most popular African artists in Francophone countries around the world. He became a star of his genre around 2009.

He released 11 music albums primarily in the popular "Coupé-Décalé" dance music style, in his career that spanned fifteen years. BBC described him as the "king" of Coupé-Décalé, which means "cut and run", in Ivorian slang it means "to cheat someone and run away" and it began in the early 2000s during Ivory Coast's civil war. The music incorporates fast percussion, deep bass and hip-hop-style vocals. Arafat became the symbol of the flashy well-dressed lifestyle which is associated with the music. His song Dosabado is one of his most popular hits. He liked motorcycles and also featured them in his recent hit 'Moto Moto' released in May. He had multiple motorcycle accidents, one of which in 2009, was serious. Ten years later in 2019 Arafat had a fatal motorcycle accident.

Ange Didier Houon (26 January 1986 – 12 August 2019), known professionally as DJ Arafat, Arafat Muana and various other stage names, was an Ivorian DJ and singer who made music in the Coupé-Décalé genre. "Jonathan", "202", "Dosabado", "Kpangor", "Zoropoto" and "Enfant Beni" were some of his major hits. He was popular in French-speaking countries in Africa. He was awarded the "Best Artist of the Year" at the Coupé-Decalé Awards in the year 2016 and 2017. He died in a motorcycle accident on 12 August 2019.

Arafat was born as Ange Didier Houon on 26 January 1986. He was the son of Tina Glamour [fr] , a popular singer, and the deceased musician and sound engineer Houon Pierre. He started his music career in the early 2000s when he was a DJ in Yopougon, a night-life district in Abidjan. He left for France to improve his career and even overstayed his visa. In 2005, he spent a month in detention as an undocumented migrant.
