Thank you speech: how to perfect cordiality in a speech

Appreciation is the sincerest form of flattery. It makes people feel seen, and their efforts feel recognized.

Any leader worth their salt knows that the key to winning the loyalties of their team is regular appreciation.

Giving a thank you speech is not just good manners but gives an insight into your character. The acknowledgement only works if it comes from the heart and rings genuine.

So, how do you give a thank you speech?

Let’s jump into it!

Table of Contents

When is it appropriate to give a thank you speech?

In a company, at an award function, for friends and family, structure of the opening statement, thanking the speakers after the event, thanking the organization, thanking the organization team, have you missed anyone, concluding your thank you speech, mention people by name, positive ending, get it over with.

You don’t really need an occasion to thank somebody. However, in a more formal setting, there may be occasions that specifically call for it. The following are the times when it is most appropriate to give a thank you speech:

  • After getting a promotion
  • After celebrating an achievement
  • Appreciating your team after tackling a tough project
  • When receiving an award or recognition
  • When establishing a new venture

The list can go on endlessly as your field might have different occasions to give a vote of thanks. Make sure not to miss any opportunity to acknowledge the reasonable efforts of the people around you!

Things to keep in mind

When you’ve decided to give a thank you speech, you need to keep a couple of things in mind. This advice differs according to why you are giving a thank you speech and who is in your audience.

If your company is celebrating you for a milestone or recognition of hard work, make sure you don’t only talk about yourself.

Be generous with your words when talking about the company itself and the great work it does.

Elaborate on how much you enjoy working here and what exactly the company does the right to make it happen.

This will make sure your higher-ups feel appreciated for the work environment they’ve created.

If you are receiving an award by a third party for your work, make sure you adequately express how honored you will be selected.

It is always a good idea to highlight what a recognized organization it is and how you are happy to be a part of it.

If you’re giving a speech to thank friends and family, the setting is much more intimate. You can drop the formalities and talk about how special these people are to you.

As they have gone the extra mile to appreciate you, make sure you return the favor by talking about how lucky you are to have them and their support.

How to write a thank-you speech?

There is no need to beat around the bush with a thank you speech. You can simply start off by expressing gratitude.

An award or recognition means that you can simply open by thanking the company or organization for the honor.

You don’t need to come armed with quotes. In fact, that might actually seem much more disingenuous. Your opening statement also sets the tone for the rest of your speech.

Some factors might determine how formal or informal you need to be with your opening:

In a formal setting, it is best to keep it cordial. Assuming it is a suit and tie event, most people are dressed up and expecting you to keep it classy as well.

As such, we recommend you go for something along the lines of, “I’m so honored to be taking up this renowned stage. Words cannot express how grateful I feel to be the recipient of this award.”

An informal event can be anything from an intimate gathering of loved ones to anniversary parties of a broader range of friends.

In such an event, you can express yourself more freely and don’t have to hold back.

We suggest opening with something along the lines of, “I can’t believe my luck on being able to be surrounded by such wonderful people. I’m immensely

grateful for each and every one of you and honored to be taking up the stage tonight.”

We have drafted a script for your opening statement. Feel free to customize it as per your needs.

Good evening, Distinguished [name], Honorable [name], Mr. Chairman, Respect Host/Hostess, and all our beloved guests.

It is my honor and privilege to have been given the opportunity to present a vote of thanks on this momentous occasion.

I am honored to represent [Company/Organization] on this prestigious [Event] stage.

I’d like to give a respectful nod to the entire [other supporting/sponsoring organization, team, crew, special guests present in the audience] that have stood behind me to make this possible.

My gratitude extends to all the speakers as well as organizers and hosts due to whom we’ve all come together on this eventful night.

Another possible scenario as a host is that you might have to thank the line of speakers that took up the stage during an event. Please find and customize the script for this as follows:

Let’s hear a big round of applause for [name speaker], His/her incredible delivery on [speech topic] leaves us all leaving this Event a little more aware.

Pick up on the central theme and reiterate it as a reminder to the audience and to show the speaker that you were paying attention.

If there are more speakers, then follow suit and consider using these thank you examples:

I’d like to thank our second speaker [name speaker] for her take on [speech topic]. Her view on [central theme] was poignant and worthy of a big round of applause.

Furthermore, let’s also express a sincere appreciation for [name speaker] for gracing our stage with her strong opinions on [speech topic]. [Refer to central theme]

Following up, I’d like to thank [name speaker] for providing such an in-depth analysis of [speech topic]. [Reference]

We are grateful to [name speaker] for having the audience in stitches with her insightful yet light-hearted presentation. [Reference].

I would like to hear a resounding round of applause for [name speaker] for his/her inspirational speech that has surely revved up our drive to achieve more.

We are lucky to have the opportunity to listen to your craft and are leaving here today, all inspired by your beautiful words!

This script is for when you need to express appreciation for the organization that is holding this event. It is usually added to the end of a speech. Feel free to edit it as required.

And last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to [organization] for allowing us to use their beautiful venue.

Our utmost thanks to the logistic support that made this Event the smooth success that it has been. Our appreciation further extends to the technical team and organizers who’ve worked tirelessly for this [fun] evening.

In the case of sponsors: I would also like to extend my thanks to [brand name] as well as [brand name] for their enormous cooperation in making this Event possible.

Mix and match these various styles so that it doesn’t get repetitive as you speak.

As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Such is the case with this Event as well. There have been many people working for weeks across multiple group chats and meetings to make this possible.

Getting every detail right and lining up one after other fantastic speakers. Our biggest thank you to the dedicated organizing team for working on every tiny detail and helping create this amazing Event.

I cannot thank everyone enough for their involvement. Each and every one of you is to be credited for your dedication and the willingness to take on the completion outside the realm of their comfort zones!

Read the room and decide the degree of the flair of formality that needs to be adjusted. People will be happy that their efforts are being recognized. Just make sure not to be too ostentatious about it.

The only thing that is worse than not being appreciated for your work is being singled out or left out.

Make sure you think hard about all the people that have put in their time and effort. Are you sure you haven’t missed anybody? How about anybody from the following list?

  • People who sent out invitations
  • Special guests who made time for the Event
  • People behind the technical arrangements
  • The team responsible for location hunting, stage setting and lighting
  • Any musicians or other performing entertainers
  • People in the catering team
  • People from the press and media who are covering the Event

Now all your thank you speech needs is a neat bow to tie it up cleanly. Try this on for size:

Mr. Chairman, ladies, and gentlemen, I would like to thank all of you for being a wonderful audience.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have such a delightful crowd presence. Once again, I’d like to give a big round of applause to all of the speakers for gracing our stage with their well-refined speeches. One last round of applause for all of us here, thank you very much!

Extra Tips to Keep in Mind

While we’ve covered most of our tips, sometimes the simple things can get away from us. And you know what they say, “Better safe than sorry.” So here they are:

A handy tip for appreciation versus criticism is this: When acknowledging people for their good work, always use their name, however, when handing out criticism in front of a crowd, try to generalize as otherwise, you will end up embarrassing people.

Instead of simply thanking your team, use their names if possible in the given time limit. This will make your appreciation seem much more personalized.

Make a list of all the people you’d genuinely like to thank. If you have time, briefly talk about how they’ve helped you in your journey.

Emphasize how important they’ve been and how. Speak from the heart, and it will definitely ring true.

For phrasing, try something along the lines of:

“From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to give a special thanks to some of the amazing people without whom I cannot imagine standing up here on this stage. Name your supporters and give out your sincere thanks.

If you have extra time, you might want to add in a few lines to thank your supervisor or boss as well. It is customary to make sure they don’t feel left out.

It can be challenging to achieve this as we’re sure any crowd consists of so many people that someone is bound to feel left out.

Your goal is, don’t leave out any of the higher-ups and the important people. But don’t start listing just about everybody just because they are in the crowd. This can reduce the impact of your gratitude for people who have actually helped you.

You’ve given your thanks to so many people who’ve made you who you are. The stage has gotten quite emotional at this point, and your audience is looking at you.

You need to end on a high note. If you simply say your thanks and leave, it can feel incomplete and lacking.

Try to say something inspirational and uplifting. Suppose you’re being recognized for your work.

In that case, you can give your team a motivational boost by saying, “The journey is not yet over, but I can’t imagine being on this ride with any team that is more dedicated or competent than the one at [name].

Let’s wear these tires out and keep this smooth ride going!”

You can also go for dedication to your strongest support or mentor. Something like, “And lastly, I want to leave you with the words of my strongest support, my [name].

When I was full of doubts and insecurities, they’re the ones who said [something inspirational].

This award is for you and your belief in me. I hope I’ve made you proud. Thank you for everything!”

We know, we know, this is your moment on stage. After all, this is such an honor, and there are so many people to thank.

But your audience is eager to get to the catering table! Be considerate, and keep it clear but brief. You don’t want to take the audience through your entire journey.

A good thank you speech is no longer than two and at most three minutes. Use your time well and remember: It is always better to leave them wanting more than getting them to be like, “Get it over with already!”

Writing a thank you speech can be intimidating. It is challenging to remember all of the people who have helped you along the way. If you recently reached a personal, spiritual or career milestone, you may be wondering how to compose a ‘thank you’ speech. A ‘thank you’ speech needs to identify all of the people you are thankful for, as well as the specific things you are thankful for and their personal or professional meaning to you. While ‘thank you’ speeches are relatively straightforward, they can be tricky to write, especially if the list of people to thank is very large or very small.

Sample Thank You Speeches

a speech on thanks

Prioritizing Your Thank You List

Step 1 Make sure you have a complete list.

  • Who helped you become the person you are today?
  • Who offered you the most encouragement?
  • What specific contributions are you thanking people for?
  • Who gave you the time of day when you really needed help?
  • Who offered valuable expertise at crucial moments?

Step 2 Start ordering your list.

  • For instance, under the category expertise, you could rank individuals from most to least important contributions of expertise to the project or award you are giving the speech for.

Step 3 Determine the top ranked people.

  • For instance, a ‘thank you’ speech at a wedding should be no longer than three minutes long.

Composing Your Speech

Step 1 Outline the structure of your speech.

  • In 1985, Sally Field spoke from the heart in her Oscar thank you speech. She said, “I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now you like me!”
  • In 1970, at the age of 61, John Wayne was genuine about how long it took him to win, upon accepting the award for best actor for the role of one-eyed Rooster Cogburn. He said, “Wow! If I’d known that, I would have put the patch on 35 years ago.”

Step 4 Express humility.

  • For instance, you could say: “I am so humbled by this honor.”
  • You could also use humor. For instance, when George Clooney won best supporting actor in 2006 but lost the best director award, he drew on his self-deprecating humor. He said, “Well, it looks like I’m not winning best director…”

Step 5 Avoid verbosity.

  • If it is a short ‘thank you’ speech, it is often best to skip the intro entirely. The audience will know why you are giving the speech, so follow the example of Abraham Lincoln who always skipped the introduction.

Step 7 Write about the most important people on your list.

  • Once you have written about the most important individuals, you can always edit the speech later for concision.
  • Budget your time for each person. Remember that if you spend too much time on any one person, you may not be able to get to others who still really need to be thanked.
  • If your speech needs to be really short, you could say: "I would like to thank Charley, my wonderful husband for supporting me through the long nights. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to my beautiful daughters, Kiera and Emily. Mommy can play more now. To Jeff Goldstein of Caracas, for feeding my crew; to Jake, Mindy, Paul, and Gwen for staying up so late, so we could get it right..."

Step 8 Finish composing the body of your speech.

  • To recognize people by function, you could say, “I also want to thank everyone who brightened up this long journey with good humor, such as John, Johnny, Arjen, Peter, Ann, Zoe, etc.”
  • So, for example, you might say: "And for the catering, thanks to Joe, Mike, Mindy, and Jeanette."

Step 9 Compose a conclusion.

  • “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice (Meister Eckhart)
  • “We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love” (Mother Teresa)
  • “I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks” (William Shakespeare)

Timing, Memorizing and Practicing Your Speech

Step 1 Time your speech.

  • You could try using online script timers to get a rough sense of your speech time. However, you should still practice with a real timer because everyone speaks at a slightly different pace.

Step 2 Write keywords or phrases on note cards.

  • You could dress up in the clothes you will be wearing at the event.
  • Try practicing the speech at the event location to get more comfortable.

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

Writing a thank you speech can seem intimidating, but if you make a list of the people you’re grateful to first, it should be relatively simple. Make a note of anyone who has helped you get to where you are now, whether professionally, supporting you emotionally, or giving you valuable advice. Order the list by how grateful you are to each person. When you write your speech, give the top few people more time and add a few details about how they helped you. Then, you can list the people further down the list together. For example, say, “And I also want to thank my colleagues, Peter, Ann, Zoe, and John.” Practice saying your speech out loud so you can keep it within the time limit. There are many ways to show someone that you appreciate them. You can buy them a gift. You can write them a thank-you note. And in some cases, you can give a speech in their honor. There are plenty of occasions when you may find yourself in a position to give an appreciation speech.

Jump ahead to these sections:

  • Steps for Writing an Appreciation Speech

Sample Appreciation Speeches

If you’re graduating from high school or college, you might give a speech thanking friends and family members for their support.

If you own a business, you might tell your employees “ thank you for your support ” as part of a speech. Speeches can also be a great way to say “ I appreciate you ” to the people in your life who support you.

Here, we break down the steps that go into crafting an excellent appreciation speech. We also include excerpts of speeches from an assortment of occasions and audiences to draw inspiration from.

Steps for writing an appreciation speech

Step 1: Know Your Audience — And Your Place

Your speech will depend on a variety of factors. But the most important ones to consider are the setting and the crowd. If your speech is a casual toast between friends over a bottle of wine, it will be a lot more casual.

You can rely on personal anecdotes and the language you use will be more personal. If you’re giving a formal speech in front of colleagues though, your tone will be very different. Your speech will be a lot more structured and concise.

Step 2: Create an Outline

Whether your appreciation speech is long or short, it’s always a good idea to craft an outline ahead of time. This will help you make sure you don’t forget to mention anything you want to cover. Overall, most speeches will break down like the following:

  • Introduction: In an introduction, you will let the audience know who you are and give a preface of what you plan to say. For instance, if you’re recognizing a specific person in an appreciation speech, give a quick rundown of why they’re worthy of appreciation.
  • Body: Here, you’ll flesh out the points you made in your introduction. You can give more specific examples of things the subject of your speech has done, and you’ll expand on why those actions deserve gratitude.
  • Conclusion: In this final section, you can reiterate the points you made earlier in the speech.

Step 3: Grab People’s Attention with Gratitude

Start with a strong opening line. In a more formal speech, a quote about gratitude can be an excellent way to set the tone. In a more casual speech, you can avoid a quote. However, you should still stick with the theme of gratitude.

Step 4: Be Personal and Specific

In casual and formal speeches alike, you should feel free to be specific. If you’re giving a speech in honor of one person, you can list all of the things they do that deserve appreciation. If you’re thanking other people for their support, you can list the ways they helped you.

Personal anecdotes are a lot more engaging for listeners. They will also help you feel more connected to your material. The more connected you feel, the more confident you’ll be in speaking. These personal anecdotes can be funny, poignant, or a blend of the two. Again, this will largely be dictated by your audience and the setting of your speech.

Step 5: Practice Makes Perfect

For a casual speech like an appreciation toast, you can probably get away with speaking off the cuff. But any kind of pre-planned appreciation speech definitely benefits from repeated practice.

The more comfortable you are with the speech, the easier it will be for you to deliver it. If you don’t know your speech inside and out, there’s a good chance that you can be tripped up by certain words or turns of phrase.

Step 6: Time Yourself

When you’re practicing your speech, you should also be timing yourself. This means you should have a stopwatch going while you read your speech aloud. Speeches can be deceptive.

A few pages don’t seem like they should take that long to read. If you only read them over in your head, that can reinforce the notion that your speech isn’t that long. But it takes a lot longer to read something aloud than it does reading it to yourself.

If you don’t practice it out loud ahead of time, you may panic in the middle of your actual delivery. If you fear your speech is taking too long, you might start to read faster and faster, which could make the speech incomprehensible. Practicing it out loud can help you hit your ideal time target without having to rush.

Step 7: Keep Your Notes Handy

Even if you’ve practiced your speech until it’s practically etched into your brain, you always want to keep notes or an outline with you. No matter how much you practice, you may find yourself freezing up in the moment. If you don’t have notes handy, you might flounder. On the other hand though, you also shouldn’t keep your whole speech with you.

If you do, you might find yourself relying on it like a security blanket. You may end up just reading the whole speech straight from the paper without engaging with your audience at all. Both ends of the spectrum are too extreme, so it’s best to find a happy medium. Some people just keep their outline with them.

Other people write out the first sentence of each paragraph to jog their memory and help them orient themselves. As you practice, you’ll find the method that works best for you.

Step 8: Do a Test Run in Front of an Audience

Practicing for a speech on your own is important. But once you feel more comfortable with the speech, you should practice in front of someone. Ideally, you’ll rehearse it in front of people several times until you can keep your nervous responses in check.

This means delivering the speech without your heart racing and your speech speeding up to match.

Step 9: Weed Out Any Trouble Spots

Every time you practice your speech, you should be refining it until you can’t improve it any further. One of the big things you should be looking out for is your usage of filler words or speech disfluencies.

Speech disfluencies encompass those little noises like “um”, “er”, and “uh” that we tend to use when we aren’t confident. These can make people tune out because your discomfort makes them feel awkward in turn.

As you practice, pay attention to places where you’re inserting those disfluencies. Keep practicing them until you become comfortable enough to leave them out. Or, rewrite those sections so they come to you more naturally.

Step 10: End On a Good Note

Above all else, remember that this speech is intended to be a positive thing. An appreciation speech should make someone’s day .

Remember to end the speech by reaffirming specifically why you are showing appreciation.

Now that we’ve gone into what makes a good appreciation speech, let’s see some examples. These are just excerpts from longer speeches, but they may help demonstrate the sort of content you might be looking for.

Example of appreciation speech for graduation

Example of appreciation speech for graduation

“As I look around at all my classmates, I realize how much I appreciate you all. Many of us have relied on each other to make it through school and to our graduation day. We supported each other during tough times. We used each other’s examples to fuel us towards getting better grades. When someone was in danger of not graduating, we pulled together to get everyone to the finish line. We all owe a lot to our families for their support. But we should also be sure to appreciate ourselves.”

Example of appreciation speech for friends

“I’d like to take a moment to raise a glass in appreciation for Bethany. Everyone here has one thing in common — Bethany’s friendship. She has always had an uncanny knack for finding people in need of a community and bringing us together. From there, we’ve been able to find the other things that connect us. But if it weren’t for Bethany, most of us would have missed out on enriching, life-changing friendships. Bethany — here’s to you!”

Example of appreciation speech for employees or a boss

“As the year draws to an end, I’m proud to announce that it’s the company’s strongest year yet. We have grown by leaps and bounds and still managed to maintain profitability. Our client satisfaction scores have never been higher. And each and every one of you has played a role in our success.

"I want to thank our sales division for going above and beyond in meeting our clients’ needs. I want to thank our marketing department for creating materials that are very transparent about our mission. I want to thank the managers for leading their divisions by example. I could stand up here and tell you a half dozen things I appreciate about every person in this room, but I’m sure you’re all ready to hit the buffet line. So I’ll conclude by saying that I appreciate all of your contributions, and am so proud to be on a team with each and every one of you.”

Example of appreciation speech for mom, dad, grandma, or grandpa

Quote for example of appreciation speech for mom, dad, grandma, or grandpa

“Hello everyone! I’d like to thank all of you for coming here today in celebration of Grandma Joy and Grandpa Bill’s 50th wedding anniversary. As most of you know, I’ve never had a relationship last more than a year. Fifty years is an absolutely mind-boggling level of commitment to someone like me.

"There are so many reasons to love and appreciate Joy and Bill. There’s all the basic grandparent stuff. Joy taught me how to make amazing cookies and Bill taught me how to change a tire. But they also took me in when my home life was less than ideal. And when they realized some of my friends also had difficult lives at home, they opened up their den as a safe space. On any given day, you could find at least two or three misfit teenagers sleeping on their fold-out couch.

"Grandma and Grandpa, I’ll never be able to let you know how much I appreciate you. I know you probably don’t think you even did anything special. But you have made so many lives worth living thanks to your compassion and generosity. Thank you for always being there for others, just like you’ve been there for each other for five decades.”

Show People You Appreciate Them Through Meaningful Speeches

There are many ways to show gratitude . An appreciation speech is just one of them. Whether you’re giving a short toast or a lengthy speech, you can communicate your gratitude for someone.

These steps and examples should help you craft an excellent speech. Ultimately though, just remember to be sincere and personal. That’s the real key to successfully showing appreciation.

Do you ever find yourself in a position where you need to deliver a thank you speech? Perhaps you've been asked to speak at an awards ceremony, a retirement party, or a wedding reception. Whatever the occasion, expressing gratitude is an important part of our interpersonal relationships. However, crafting an effective thank you speech can be challenging. In this article, we'll provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to write a short thank you speech that will leave a lasting impact on your audience.

Understanding the Purpose of a Thank You Speech

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of writing a thank you speech, it’s important to understand why they are essential. Expressing gratitude is at the heart of all human relationships, and a thank you speech is one way to show appreciation. Let's take a look at the three main purposes of a thank you speech:

Expressing gratitude

The primary purpose of a thank you speech is to express gratitude. Whether you're thanking a group of people, an individual or an organisation, a thank you speech is an opportunity to express your sincere appreciation. It is important to note that expressing gratitude is not only beneficial to the person receiving it, but also to the person giving it. Studies have shown that expressing gratitude can improve mental health, increase happiness and improve relationships.

When expressing gratitude in a thank you speech, it is important to be specific. Mention the actions or contributions that the person or group has made that you are grateful for. This not only shows that you have taken the time to reflect on their efforts, but also makes the thank you speech more meaningful and personal.

Acknowledging achievements

Another purpose of a thank you speech is to acknowledge achievements. You might be thanking someone for their hard work, dedication, or contribution to a particular project or organisation. A thank you speech gives you the opportunity to highlight specific accomplishments and recognise the efforts of others.

Acknowledging achievements in a thank you speech not only shows appreciation, but also motivates the person or group to continue their hard work and dedication. It is important to note that acknowledging achievements does not have to be limited to professional accomplishments. Personal achievements such as overcoming a challenge or reaching a personal goal can also be acknowledged in a thank you speech.

Celebrating milestones

Finally, a thank you speech can be used to celebrate a milestone. Perhaps you're thanking people for helping to organise a successful event or celebrating a particular milestone, such as an anniversary or a retirement. Whatever the occasion, a thank you speech can help you commemorate a special moment.

Celebrating milestones in a thank you speech not only shows appreciation for the people who helped make the milestone possible, but also allows everyone to reflect on the journey that led to the milestone. It can be a time to share stories, memories and experiences that brought everyone together to achieve the milestone.

In conclusion, a thank you speech is an important way to express gratitude, acknowledge achievements and celebrate milestones. Taking the time to write and deliver a heartfelt thank you speech can have a positive impact on both the person giving it and the person or group receiving it.

Preparing Your Thank You Speech

Now that you understand the purpose of a thank you speech, let's move on to the preparation phase. Here are three essential steps you should follow when preparing your thank you speech:

Identifying your audience

Before you start writing your speech, you need to consider your audience. Think about who you will be speaking to and what their expectations might be. Are they colleagues, friends, or family members? What is the occasion, and what is the tone of the event? Understanding your audience will help you tailor your message to their needs and expectations.

Listing key points to include

Next, make a list of the key points you want to include in your speech. Think about the purpose of your speech and what you want to say. Make a list of important people you want to thank, particular achievements or milestones to celebrate, and any other relevant information that you want to share.

Choosing the right tone

Finally, consider the tone of your speech. Do you want it to be formal or informal? Do you want to use humour or keep it serious? Think about the occasion and your audience, and choose a tone that is appropriate.

Structuring Your Thank You Speech

Now that you have prepared the groundwork for your speech, it's time to start structuring it. Here are three essential steps to structure your thank you speech:

Crafting a strong opening

The opening of your speech sets the tone for the rest of your message. Start with a strong opening that grabs your audience’s attention and sets the tone for the rest of your speech. You can use a quote, anecdote, or a personal story to capture their interest.

Organizing your main points

Next, organise your main points. You want to structure your speech in a way that is easy to follow and understand. Start with the most important points and work your way down. You can use chronological order, a logical sequence or a thematic structure to help convey your message.

Concluding with impact

Finally, end your speech with impact. The conclusion should be memorable and leave a lasting impression on your audience. Restate your main points, thank your audience for their attention and conclude with a call to action or a memorable quote.

Tips for Writing an Effective Thank You Speech

Now that you have the structure of your speech in place, here are three essential tips to help you write an effective thank you speech:

Keeping it concise

A short thank you speech is often the most effective. Keep your message concise, clear and to the point. You don't want to bore your audience with lengthy speeches, so keep it short and sweet.

Personalizing your message

Be sure to personalise your message. Use the names of people who have had an impact on your life and speak from the heart. This will make your message more memorable and help you connect with your audience on a deeper level.

Using anecdotes and examples

Finally, use anecdotes and examples to illustrate your message. This will help your audience relate to your speech and make it more engaging. Stories are one of the most powerful ways to communicate your message, so use them to make your speech come alive.

Business thank you speech

Let's write an employee appreciation speech.

By:  Susan Dugdale  | Last modified: 04-21-2021

There'll be those times, (hopefully a lot of them: many, many more than once a year on Employee Appreciation Day ), when as an employer or a manager you want to formally thank your team for a job well done in a speech.

To help you do that, here's an example employee appreciation, or business thank you, speech to use as a template. It covers off all the areas you'll most likely want to comment on or acknowledge.

At the bottom of the page, under the speech, you'll find a printable of the template to download.  I hope it's useful to you!

Graphic: Employee Appreciation quote. Text: Take time to appreciate employees and they will reciprocate in a thousand ways. Bob Nelson.

How to make this speech work best for you

If you've never given a thank you speech of this type before the best place to begin is by reading my notes on the benefits of giving thanks, and the most effective way to do it. Once you've done that you'll be ready to get maximum benefit from the template for your staff, your company, and yourself.

Be specific, direct, generous and frequent with your thanks

Thank you. They're two simple, yet extraordinarily powerful, words.

Studies show regularly and sincerely showing appreciation and gratitude for all the positive efforts employees make delivers benefits to employers and employees alike.  And focused specific acknowledgement is even much more effective than generalized.

The benefits of giving thanks include:

  • Increased job satisfaction leading to increased motivation, innovation and productivity
  • Increased loyalty which in turn means less loss of staff
  • Increased happiness and health for everyone in the work place, in their homes, and communities.

For more please see leader of the O.C. Tanner Institute, David Sturt's, article for Harvard Business Review:  The Easiest Thing You Can Do to Be a Great Boss ,  outlining the results of "two separate but recent studies involving nearly 3,500 employees, from startups to Fortune 100 companies."

And this article:  Giving thanks can make you happier  from Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School.

Do you know the difference between generalized and specific praise?

To make what you say count, to make it stick in minds and memories, praise, thanks and acknowledgement needs to be specific.

For example saying, "Thanks everyone for a job well done.", while pleasant, is generalized.

Who does it really apply to? What is the job being referred to?  Is everyone being praised regardless of the size and value of their contribution? Even the guy in accounts who bunked off as soon as he thought no one was looking?

The comment, although nice, is wide open. And because it is so broad, it is easily discounted as having very little value.

Contrast that with: "Thanks Robbie. Those extra hours you put in night after night for two whole weeks last March to get to the bottom of the problem with our analysis of data from the laboratories were a life saver. Your effort got the job back on track. We couldn't be more grateful for your perseverance and initiative."

This is significantly better.  You've let Robbie know his work is being seen and valued.

You've also let others listening know which is important for his self-esteem. To be a member of a group where excellence is openly and genuinely acknowledged makes everybody feel proud. This is effective, memorable praise. Something worth striving for.

We are people, and we want, and need, to be acknowledged by the significant folk in our lives: work, friends and family, for what we do well.

These are your next 7 steps:

1. Read the speech through to get an idea of what is covered, and how.

2. Scroll to the foot of the page to download the speech template.

3. Take sections out or, add pieces in, to fit your own situation.  For instance, you may not want to talk about challenges. So that section is cut out.

4. Replace all the purple highlighted words inside the brackets eg.  { Fill in project(s) name here. Example:  Data Digitization Project}  with what you want to say about your company and your people.

Please note - Some of the speech segments start with an explanation. These have been highlighted in light green and are not part of the speech itself. Eg:  Add a brief description of at least one of the challenges endured.

5. Once you have completed everything, say the speech out loud and record it.

6. Play it back and listen for any areas where you need to make changes. For instance:

  • Do the transitions work?
  • Are you repeating yourself?
  • Have you missed an important section out?
  • Have you mentioned everybody you can and have you been clear about why they are being called out?
  • Is the language too formal? Or too informal?
  • Is it too long?

7. Make all of the changes needed. Then record your speech once more and listen again. Repeat the process until you are satisfied.

Example business thank you speech

Friends and colleagues,

We all know why we are here today, so I'm beginning with the obvious: a simple, heartfelt, and well-deserved THANK YOU!

For those of you who took on the {Fill in project(s) name here. Example: Data Digitization Project} , I couldn't be more grateful! {Name some people you want to acknowledge specifically here. Example: Sandy, Darren and Joe} I know it wasn't easy at times.

Add a brief description of at least one of the challenges endured.

Standing on your feet all day on the cold concrete floor of {Change name to fit. Example: ABCD's Record room} instead of sitting at your desks in our warm, comfortably cozy and friendly {Change name to fit. Example: Quest} office, isn't anybody's idea of fun.

Change championship

Acknowledge the knock-on effect: how everybody, even those indirectly involved, was asked to accommodate and adapt for the duration of the project.

The same gratitude goes to those of you who were on this project part time. Thank you for taking time away from your other important tasks so that we could keep pace with our customer's goals and deadlines on this one.

Whether it was cooperating through {Enter specific examples of ways people worked to allow the project to go on. Examples: carpooling like Jo and Liz, Mike and Bob offering to double up on a few of the more tedious tasks, or simply through putting in some extra unexpected time that the project demanded like Fred and his two faithful side kicks: Dawn and Bruce,} , your efforts were appreciated.

Accountability

Acknowledging how responsibly the project was undertaken and the effect that had.

Through all of you coming in day after day and always putting your best foot forward, we were able to achieve so much. At the same time our client was assured of our commitment to the highest quality of work.

We did this by {Enter specific examples to illustrate. Examples: following the strict quality work standards set by Bill's team, being willing to work closely and cooperatively to fill in any gaps that arose, (Yes, that's a nod to Rose for stepping in.) , taking the initiative to go back over some aspect of the work that occasionally required double-checking. (Thanks Hugh.)}

I want you to know they are delighted with the accuracy we achieved. Without your shared pride and accountability, we simply could not have been so satisfactorily, so triumphantly, successful.

Acknowledging how people worked together.

As is true with any project encompassing so many different aspects, there were some ups and downs, but that's to be expected. Whether {Enter specific examples of team work. Examples: someone needed help analyzing, or data compilation was falling behind, or someone simply needed a ride to or from the office} ... everyone pulled together and worked as a team.

I know how much time and energy this assignment demanded, and I deeply appreciate all of your efforts, both individually, and collectively.

Customer focus

Acknowledging the result of satisfying/fulfilling the customer's need.

Merely completing this project was a hurdle in and of itself. However, congratulations are in order to each and everyone of you for a job so well done!

We've always known about your willingness to consistently go above and beyond. Now our client has experienced it too.

In fact, they are so satisfied they are currently in the process of retaining our services for another project!

Very few things speak more loudly about a company than a client wanting to be a repeat customer. So, not only can each of you be very proud of yourselves but we can all be proud that everyone on the {Enter the name of your company here. Example: Quest} Team will continue to benefit as a result of your contributions!

Thank you all, sincerely, for being true professionals, for being inspirational! You are a great team. This successful outcome, the result of all your hard work and dedication, is down to you. And, lastly thank you for the pleasure and privilege of working with you! Congratulations, once again!

Chad Dyer - MemesBams Managing Director

Chad Dyer from MemesBams says:

"Saying 'thank you' to acknowledge or encourage desired behaviors at work is very effective, and a form of what’s called positive reinforcement.

Research has proven top performing teams and leaders give each other more than five positive comments for every criticism.

Acknowledging good behavior and actions actually reinforces and drives more good behavior. Goodness becomes self-perpetuating!

It’s also proven that positive reinforcement is more effective at changing behavior then dishing out negative feedback.

This holds true for both your colleagues, direct reports, and YES even your Boss. So, say 'thank you' more often through a speech, email, card, or private conversation.

* The story behind this business thank you speech

It arrived one day through my contact form - almost in the form it is now. A complete speech, from a complete stranger!

I emailed him to thank him for his thank you speech, and to ask if I could post it on my site. This is what he said:

Ms. Dugdale,

You're welcome for the contribution. Truth be told, as I was writing what I needed to be a "business" or "professional" type thank you speech, I was scouring the web for some well-placed anecdotes, tips to improve upon, or general all-around good advice to include in a thank you speech.

Surprisingly, incredibly difficult to find. Google may churn out billions of "results," but none were applicable. So, as I continued to compose my own, I happened across your website. I found it helpful in terms of examples of speech writing structure, some main points to include, etc.

Long story short, when I had finished it the other night, I just thought I'd pass it on when I saw that that was an option on your useful website. You may certainly post it as a "sample business thank you speech" on your page if you wish. Since, as I said above, they were incredibly difficult to come by.

If it helps someone else who, perhaps, has never written anything like that before and now finds themselves in the position of needing to, I'd be glad if my example could help them.

It seemed fitting to send it to you after using some of your tips to help me complete it.

Thank you for your rather enthusiastic reply! It was both a surprise and a delight for me. I'm glad to hear my speech brought a smile to your face too :)

Kind regards,

a speech on thanks

A thank you speech is a heartfelt expression of gratitude that leaves a long-lasting impression on the audience. Whether you’re receiving an award, thanking your colleagues, or appreciating a loved one, a well-crafted thank you speech can make all the difference. This article will guide you through the process of writing an impactful thank you speech.

1. Understand your audience:

Before diving into the writing process, consider the audience you’ll be addressing. Knowing who will be listening will help tailor your message and ensure you make appropriate references that resonate with them.

2. Establish your purpose:

Determine the primary goal of your speech and what message you want to convey to your listeners. Are you thanking people for their support, acknowledging hard work, or expressing gratitude for a particular event? Clarifying your objective will provide direction for your speech.

3. Brainstorm and list key points:

Take some time to brainstorm and jot down all the crucial points you want to cover in your speech. These may include specific accomplishments, memorable moments, challenges overcome, or individuals who played significant roles in your success.

4. Organize the content:

With all your key points listed, start organizing them into a coherent structure. Sequence them logically and divide them into sections like introduction, body, and conclusion for optimal clarity.

5. Make it personal:

Personal stories are often the most memorable part of any speech. Include anecdotes that highlight particular individuals’ contributions or share how their support impacted you personally.

6. Express genuine gratitude:

Be sincere in expressing your appreciation and ensure that every word comes from the heart. Demonstrate your gratitude by acknowledging everyone’s unique contribution to your success.

7. Keep it concise:

Thank you speeches should ideally be brief and direct, lasting no more than a few minutes. Stick to the essential information without meandering or going off on tangents.

8. Add some humor (if appropriate):

Adding a touch of humor to your speech can make it more engaging and memorable. However, ensure that this humor is appropriate for the occasion and considerate of the audience you’re addressing.

9. Rehearse your speech:

Practice your speech multiple times before the actual event. This will help build your confidence and troubleshoot any potential issues in your delivery, such as pacing, tone, and emphasis.

10. Conclude with a strong closing statement:

End your thank you speech on a high note with an impactful closing statement. This could be a quote or personal sentiment that reinforces your message and leaves a lasting impression on the audience.

Remember, a well-crafted thank you speech showcases gratitude while making everyone in attendance feel appreciated for their support. By following these steps, not only will you compose an effective speech, but you’ll also strengthen relationships and leave an indelible mark on those who’ve helped you along the way.

Ensuring that your speech strikes the right balance between formality and sincerity is a good way to make it impactful and memorable.

In crafting your type of speech for an award, it’s crucial to find a good way to strike a balance between formality and approachability. By doing so, you can avoid an overly formal tone that may hinder the genuine expression of gratitude. Focus on using language that is sincere and earnest, steering clear of excessively formal or stiff speech patterns. This will ensure that your speech award acceptance is heartfelt and free from overly formal, stilted language. Essentially, aim for an acceptance speech that is both warm and genuine, reflecting the heartfelt appreciation you feel towards the awarding body and your supporters.

Should a thank you speech only express gratitude?

A thank you speech should go beyond expressing gratitude. It can acknowledge the hard work of team members, convey sincerity, and inspire future endeavors. A winning speech at an award ceremony should encompass gratitude, appreciation, and recognition of challenges overcome.

If you want to give a memorable thank you speech for an award, it’s important to take the time to craft a message that is both heartfelt and authentic. Start by reflecting on what the award means to you and why you are grateful to receive it. Use specific examples to illustrate your appreciation and show your audience how much the recognition truly means to you. Remember that your speech isn’t just about you – it’s also an opportunity to thank the people who helped you get to where you are today. From mentors and colleagues to friends and family members, be sure to acknowledge everyone who has played a role in your success. By doing so, you’ll not only create a winning speech, but you’ll also leave a lasting impression on your audience.

In conclusion, a winning thank you speech for an award is not just about expressing gratitude, but also about recognizing the awarding body, sharing your journey towards the achievement, and connecting with your audience on a personal level. Use appropriate tone and language, incorporate personal stories, and add a touch of humor to make your speech stand out. Remember to avoid overly formal language and to go beyond just expressing gratitude. A well-crafted thank you speech has the power to leave a lasting impact on your audience and create a memorable moment. So, take the time to prepare and deliver a speech that truly reflects your appreciation and showcases your personality.

Thank You Speech - Always Appreciated

A thank you speech and heartfelt words in a note can mean so much. Everyone values being thanked and we all enjoy feeling appreciated.

thank you speech

A thank you note can take just a moment of your time, yet it can brighten the recipient's day immeasurably!

Take a moment to read through the words of wisdom and gratitude, personalize them and then buy or even make your own thank you card.

Hand write your special message - a beautiful handwritten card remains a special gesture and one that is sure to be appreciated.

Dear____________

A special word of thanks I have to say,

your thoughtful, kind gesture certainly made my day.

Our days tend to be frenetic - always rushing around

Yet you searched till the perfect gift you found.

I appreciate, as always, you going the extra mile

unwrapping your gift, brightened my day and made me smile

So in my thoughts you will continue to be,

I so appreciate that you took the time to remember me.

____________________

Words of gratitude in a card can also be read out loud at a special function - especially if you have the odd butterfly flying around in your stomach.

It is perfectly acceptable, especially if you are feeling a bit emotional, to preface your speech with something like: " May I take the opportunity to read you the words of thanks that I wrote in my card."

Expressing Gratitude at the End of a Speech: Formal and Informal Ways

Concluding a speech with a heartfelt expression of gratitude is an essential way to acknowledge your audience’s time and attention. In this guide, we’ll explore various ways to say thank you in different contexts, providing you with tips and examples along the way.

Table of Contents

Formal Expressions of Thanks

When delivering a formal speech, such as during a business conference or an academic event, it’s important to maintain a professional tone. Here are a few ways to express gratitude formally:

1. Thanking the Audience as a Whole

Addressing the audience collectively is a common practice in formal speeches. Here’s an example of how you can express your thanks:

Thank you all for being such an attentive and engaged audience. Your presence here today is greatly appreciated.

2. Expressing Appreciation to Specific Individuals

If there are particular individuals you would like to acknowledge, consider mentioning them by name. This personalized touch can demonstrate your sincerity. For instance:

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. John Smith for his invaluable guidance throughout this research. I am also indebted to my colleagues, Sarah and Michael, for their unwavering support and collaboration.

Informal Ways to Say Thank You

Informal speeches, such as toasts or informal gatherings, offer a more relaxed atmosphere. Here are a few ways to express your gratitude informally:

1. Keep It Simple and Sincere

When speaking in a casual setting, simplicity and sincerity can go a long way. Consider using straightforward language to express your appreciation:

Thank you, everyone! Your presence here means a lot to me, and I am truly grateful for your support.

2. Inject Humor or Personal Anecdotes

Injecting humor or sharing personal anecdotes can create a warm and memorable moment. Tailor your expression of thanks to the specific audience and occasion. Here’s an example:

Oh, before I conclude, let me share a funny story. Last week, when I was rehearsing this speech, my dog decided to join me on stage. Thankfully, you’re a far better audience than my mischievous pup. Thank you all for being here tonight!

Combining Formality and Warmth

Expressing gratitude can be a balancing act, particularly in instances where you want to maintain professionalism while also conveying warmth and appreciation. Here are some suggestions:

1. Blend Personal Touches with the Bigger Picture

Integrate personal anecdotes into a broader message of gratitude to create a heartfelt but still formal conclusion:

As I stand here, reminiscing about the journey we’ve embarked on together, I cannot help but think of the countless individuals who have shaped and guided me. This room is filled with such remarkable souls, and I am truly grateful for every one of you. Thank you for being an integral part of my growth.

2. Express Hope for a Lasting Connection

Show gratitude while expressing a desire for ongoing connections and future collaborations:

In closing, I extend my sincere thanks to each and every one of you for gracing this occasion with your presence. I hope that our paths will continue to cross, and that together we can achieve even greater heights. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey.

Tips for Delivering Your Thank-You Message

As you approach the end of your speech, remember these tips to effectively convey your gratitude:

  • Eye Contact: Maintain eye contact with your audience while expressing your thanks, as it demonstrates sincerity.
  • Tone of Voice: Modulate your voice to convey your appreciation authentically.
  • Body Language: Use open and welcoming body language, such as smiling and open palms, to enhance your message.
  • Timing: Place your expression of gratitude towards the end of your speech, allowing it to leave a lasting impression.

Saying thank you at the end of a speech is a powerful gesture that leaves a positive impact on your audience. Whether you choose a formal or informal approach, ensure your expression of gratitude reflects the tone and context of your speech. Remember to maintain an authentic and warm tone, and consider tailoring your words to resonate with the specific audience, creating a lasting connection based on appreciation.

Ah, Thanksgiving. Typically a time to gather with family and friends to engage in merriment and passive-aggressive squabbles. Some people celebrate with family members they don’t see often, others get together with a smaller crew, and some sign on to Zoom for the occasion. Even if 2022 wasn’t your favorite year, there is always something to be grateful for. This isn't to say you need to go full toxic positivity . But taking a small moment to recognize the things that got you through the year — whether that's friends, family, your pets, or Postmates — can feel kind of good. If you're at a loss for words this year, these 15 Thanksgiving toast and speech ideas will have you covered.

  • These are the people you want to personally and publicly thank since they have an important role for the success of your event. Note that of their names in ranking with the first one as the most important. You may also like special occasion speech examples & samples.
  • Avoid being general in your speech. State specific reasons as to what exactly are you thanking the person or group for. Aside from making your speech shorter this way, it also gives your speech more meaning.
  • As mentioned before, always be specific. Explain how what the favor or gift meant to or how it helped you. This is you chance to compliment and/or praise them. You may also check out speech examples for students .

How to Write a Thank You Speech

Like any form of writing you need the basic three parts in your speech. Here’s how to write each parts of the speech:

1. The Introduction

Typically, this is where you explain the reason as tho why there is an event as of the moment. Just like in any writing, your introduction opens up your whole speech. This also where you typically greet everyone. In addition, you explain why there is a need for you to thank everyone. You may also check out leadership speech examples & samples.

In the introduction, you can always narrate a small story leading to the day of the event. Short stories that relate to the event help people understand your experience better. Aside from its entertainment value, it helps people relate and empathize with you and your experiences.

2. Body of the Speech

In this part of the speech, you slowly make your way into thanking the people who has helped you. Start by thanking the people on top of your list and make your way down to the last one. Always allot as much time thanking them according to their importance for you. But generally, always make time in thanking everyone. You might be interested in introduction speech examples & samples.

You can also add and insert quotations that directly relate to you or reflect the relationship you have with these people. Not only are quotations great filler, they also add sentimental value to your speech. It may sound a bit old school but it is just another way of expressing gratefulness.

3. The Conclusion

The conclusion basically wraps up your entire speech. This is where you summarize the entirety of your speech in the shortest possible way. You summarize the main points you have made during the speech and finish. You can also add some wise parting words and a compliment of you wanting to work with the same people again. Remember to always end your speech in a high note; reiterate how thankful you really are and wish everyone a good day or night. You may also see tribute speech examples & samples.

It is also very important to remember that generally thank you speeches are not as lengthy as you want it to be. It is best to not get carried away with your emotions and only include significant people in you list and then thank the rest as a group or as a whole.

Just like in awarding ceremonies like the Oscars, winning artists are only given a few minutes to receive, acknowledge and thank all the people for their award. Like what you see, artists usually bring a short list containing a list of people they want to publicly thank, so should you. You may also like motivational speech examples & samples.

How to Give a Thank You Speech

Although this type of speech is seldom spontaneous, you can have a couple of days even weeks to rehearse your speech; spontaneous speeches are more difficult. But sometimes even though you have rehearsed it, nerves always get in the way and get the best out of you. Here’s an easy guide how to flawlessly deliver your thank you speech:

1. Always be prepared

Even though you do not expect to be given the chance to express you thanks say in awarding ceremonies where you expect not to win, always prepare a short speech, just in case. You can never know when or where you’ll be given a chance to thank the important people in you life especially in events where you are actually a part of. You may also see steps in speech composition .

In this sense, there is no point in not preparing when you already know you are tasked to do the thank you speech at the end of you event. Just because you are familiar with the people you’re about to recognize does not mean you should not prepare. In order to avoid blabbering, always prepare your speech beforehand and practice, practice, practice.

2. Make a list

If you want to specifically thank and mention some people, make sure you do not forget the most important ones. Make a list to make sure you have all the right people to include in you message and that you have not forgotten anyone. Forgetting people like your assistant that has contributed and helped you so much, can cause offense and can be embarrassing in you end. Make sure you review and check you list. You may also like wedding speech examples & samples.

3. Thank everyone in the room

Although you already have a list of people you want to thank, you have to thank all the people present before anything else. Appreciate their presence and support in swift but sincere way. You can go like, “I appreciate all of you coming out, especially in this weather. I’m so grateful to have people in my life like you.” You may also check out how to conclude a speech .

4. In case you forget someone, send them a personal thank you

In a scenario where you forgot to thank someone special, apologize and send them something after the event. It can be distasteful and can hurt the person’s emotions when they know they’ve helped you be where you are. Send them a card or any gift, not only because you forgot to thank them publicly but because they done a good job and has helped you along the way. How to Deliver a Thank You Speech

a speech on thanks

So now I have an important question for you:  Should you find the time to stand up in front of an audience and thank someone who went above and beyond?  Who helped you in some significant way?  I am not just talking to managers who are fortunate enough to have a hard-working administrative assistant.  And I’m not just talking about work-related situations. I’m talking about any situation that allows you to speak from the heart and publicly thank someone for a special kindness, a warrior’s effort, or perhaps even a sacrifice that enhanced your life in some way.

Thursday being Thanksgiving, you might be already in this frame of mind. If not, let me help you get in the mood.  Let’s start by answering these questions:

  • When you think of someone who meets one of the criteria above, who comes to mind?
  • Describe what the person did (or didn’t do) that makes you grateful.
  • Address the person by name
  • Articulate the specific act/gesture (don’t gloss over this or rush through it because you feel awkward)
  • Describe how/why you benefited from it – be specific!
  • Express genuine gratitude and appreciation (choose your words carefully)
  • Connect their gesture and your reward to the bigger picture (so it’s not just about your good fortune. Demonstrate your awareness that you are part of the whole (team, organization, family, congregation, etc.)
  • Conclude! Don’t ramble on. How can you summarize your appreciation?
  • Where and when? This question is not to be trifled with. Some people love public praise, others wilt under it. Figure out the right event, audience, and timing so that your efforts yield the results intended:  your subject feels valued, your audience is happy to witness your expression of thanks, and you are viewed as a genuinely thoughtful person – and authentic public speaker!

You have anywhere from four to 34 days to get this done.  Start planning today.

We’d love to hear how it went.  Let us know!

Some people say that saying thank you is a waste of time if the person doing you the favor is close to you as it is almost an insult to do so. We don’t agree, saying thank you makes the giver of the favor or the host of the occasion or the stranger doing a kind deed feel good. It is also good manners to express your gratitude and this makes you feel good too. Words have a power that we often do not think about or talk about but they create vibrations that linger on creating an impact; whether it is negative or positive depends on what is being said and how it is being received and perceived. But often we find it difficult to say a thank you, especially if it is in the form of a speech. We tend to gush on or say too little, both instances can be bad. It is good to have a sample of a thank you speech that will come in handy. For instance, there are short welcome speech samples that you can use. Which is the reason that we are putting together quick thank you speech samples for any occasion.

It could be possible that we can come up with things to say to your love before you die but coming up with quick thank you speech samples for any occasion may be more challenging. Some may find it more challenging to say thank you but find it easier to go with quotes about being happy.

Quick Thank You Speech Samples For Any Occasion

a speech on thanks

Thank you for letting me be a part of your special celebration and making me a part of the occasion as well as the celebration.

A simple thank you is not enough to thank you for inviting me to your party, but right now, that is all I have to give you – a heartfelt thanks.

I will always remember this special gesture that you made to me with a lot of fond affection and love. Thank you for doing this for me.

It is good to be here because it gives me a chance to say thanks to everyone for their role in making my venture a success.

When you hold someone close to your heart, they know how you feel about them. In spite of that, it is good to say thank you nevertheless because some things need to be said.

a speech on thanks

A thank you is a simple gesture to let you know what you have done and that I love you for doing it.

Is it a good idea to end this occasion with a simple thank you? It may not be enough but it needs to acknowledged.

It is my humble opinion that a thank you is a simple way of saying that I am happy for what you did and the way you supported me. And I thank you very sincerely for all that you have done.

I appreciate the way you have treated me and made me feel though I am only a visitor here. I would like to sincerely thank you for all that you have done to make me feel at home.

Dear all, as I stand here looking upon all your eager faces, I realize that while I need to thank you, it is also important to keep my thank you speech short because you already know I am really grateful.

a speech on thanks

A mere thank you is a small way in which I can repay you for what you have done. But I feel that this is the first step to telling you how special you have made me feel.

My gratitude is but a very small part of the way I feel about being a part of this ommunity/project/enterprise/function.

Thank you! Phew! There I said it! Now we can move on to the bigger celebration.

My thank you to you is but a simple drop in the ocean when I compare it to what you have done to have me thank you.

No way will I go from here without telling you that I am grateful for all that you have done. Thank you very much.

a speech on thanks

When I say thank you to you, you have to realize it is not just for today but for letting me into your lives and letting me feel like one of you.

The occasion demands that I say a few words. But that is not why I am doing this, but because this occasion demands a few words of gratitude towards all those who made this occasion possible and worked to ensure its success.

I am happy that this is an occasion that will let me have my thanksgiving. I am grateful for everything and everybody that led up to this moment.

They say there is no I in team and today is proof of this statement. You guys rock as individual stars and as a team. Thank you for being who and what you are!

I am grateful that I am being given this award because it gives me a chance to look at you all and wish you all the best for all that you do and say thank you for making this possible.

a speech on thanks

The company I work in requires a bigger thank you than anything or anybody else. But this does not mean that I do not want to thank each one of you for helping me along the way.

I thank you from every atom of my existence because I owe you a lot not only for helping me along the right path but also for ensuring that I did not go down the wrong path.

It is indeed a fortunate thing to happen when a person is called upon to say thank you because it means that he or she has a lot to be grateful for.

When appreciating a speech in English, be genuine and precise. Use phrases like “Your point on…was thought-provoking” to show specificity. Remember to balance praise with polite feedback and use positive body language to amplify your appreciation.

If you want to know how appreciation has been a cornerstone of society—it has existed in every culture on earth since the beginning of time, read Appreciate: Celebrating People, Inspiring Greatness (Amazon Link). This is one of my favorite books that taught me how to appreciate my students and the people surrounding them to inspire them. Now it’s your turn to influence greatness in other people.

Continue reading this detailed guide to learn specific phrases you can use, tips on body language, and how to provide helpful feedback. Understanding these aspects of appreciating a speech will empower you to express your feelings effectively and contribute constructively to the speaker’s growth.

Table of Contents

Guide to expressing general appreciation for someone’s speech.

To appreciate a speech, offering genuine praise for a speaker’s efforts is important. This can involve verbal commendation, body language, and written feedback. The goal is to make the speaker feel valued and acknowledged for their hard work and the information or insights they’ve shared. This section will guide you through several ways to express your appreciation and tips to do it effectively.

1. Verbal Appreciation

Verbal appreciation involves using specific phrases or comments to express your approval or enjoyment of a speech. It’s one of the most direct ways to show your appreciation. This can be done immediately after the speech, during a Q&A session, or in a more personal setting afterward. Here are 15 phrases that can be used to express verbal appreciation.

2. Appreciating with Body Language

Non-verbal cues are a powerful form of communication. They can demonstrate that you are engaged and appreciative of the speaker’s efforts. Even if you don’t get a chance to verbally express your appreciation, your body language can speak volumes. Here are some ways you can show appreciation through body language:

Remember, sincere and respectful body language can significantly impact the speaker, reinforcing your verbal appreciation and leaving them with a positive impression.

How to Compliment Specific Aspects of a Speech?

Appreciating the content of a speech.

The content is the core of any speech. It includes the information, arguments, or ideas presented by the speaker. Here, you appreciate the speaker’s content’s richness, clarity, or creativity. Here are some ways to complement the content of the speech:

Appreciating the Delivery of a Speech

The delivery of a speech refers to how the speaker presents their content, including their vocal variety, body language, and use of visual aids. A speaker’s delivery can greatly influence how their message is received. To compliment a speaker’s delivery, you could say:

Appreciating the Impact of a Speech

Remember, specificity enhances the authenticity of your appreciation. The speaker’s understanding of what they did well boosts their confidence and guides their future efforts.

Offering Constructive Feedback

Understanding that appreciation is about praising and helping the speaker grow is essential. A critical part of this process is offering constructive feedback . Constructive feedback involves sharing specific, actionable, and kind suggestions that can help the speaker improve.

Balancing Positivity with Critique

Feedback is most effective when it strikes a balance between positivity and critique. Start your feedback with genuine appreciation before moving on to areas of improvement. This approach ensures the speaker feels valued and is more receptive to your suggestions. Here’s how you can provide balanced feedback:

Offering Specific Suggestions

Being specific and clear in your feedback makes it more valuable. Rather than making general statements like “your speech was good, but could be better,” try to point out specific areas for improvement and provide actionable advice. Here are some examples of specific feedback:

Maintaining a Respectful and Encouraging Tone

Feedback is a gift when given right. So, ensure your words help the speaker grow and boost their confidence rather than demotivating them.

7 Tips for Effectively Appreciating a Speech

1. be genuine.

Sincerity forms the cornerstone of effective appreciation. When expressing your admiration, refrain from generic compliments like “Great job.” Instead, focus on the unique aspects of the speech that resonated with you, highlighting the speaker’s distinctive strengths.

2. Be Specific

Specificity is a key component of meaningful appreciation. Instead of delivering vague commendations, mention the specific elements in the speech that caught your attention. Whether it was a powerful anecdote, a well-articulated argument, or a captivating delivery style, pinpointing the details will illustrate that you were attentively listening and valuing the speaker’s efforts.

3. Offer Balanced Feedback

4. mind your body language.

Body language is a potent tool in the arsenal of effective communication. Non-verbal cues like maintaining eye contact, nodding in agreement, and applauding can silently, yet powerfully, convey your appreciation. An encouraging smile, a warm nod, or a hearty clap can do wonders to uplift the speaker’s spirits.

5. Follow Up After the Speech

Showing your appreciation doesn’t necessarily end when the applause dies down. You can reach out to the speaker after their performance, either in person or via a written note or email. This additional effort further emphasizes your sincere admiration and can have a lasting impact on the speaker.

6. Practice Active Listening

7. use appropriate language.

The language you employ while appreciating someone’s speech significantly influences the way your feedback is received. Ensure you choose your words wisely, aiming for a positive, respectful, and professional tone that resonates with your genuine admiration.

By following these tips, you can effectively show your appreciation, offering the speaker valuable affirmation and insightful feedback that supports their growth and development. Remember, well-articulated appreciation can inspire and encourage speakers to further enhance their skills.

Say Thank You in English — Casual Situations

Did your friend just wish you and your husband a happy anniversary? Did your office celebrate your birthday with cake? Did a stranger hold a door open for you at the post office?

For these everyday, informal experiences, we can use a variety of expression to say thanks.

Thank you. / Thanks so much. / Thanks a lot. / Thanks a bunch. / Thanks a ton. / Thanks!

Did your colleague at work just bring you a cup of coffee? Say:

  • “Thanks a bunch! I really need an extra dose of caffeine right now!”
  • “Thanks! You’re awesome for thinking of me.”
  • “Thank you!”

I really appreciate it. / You shouldn’t have.

Did your office just give you a birthday gift or a surprise party at work? Say:

  • “I can’t believe you did this! You shouldn’t have. But thank you so much. This was very kind of you.”
  • “What a thoughtful gift. I really appreciate this!”

I don’t know what to say! / That’s very kind.

A stranger on the street just gave you a compliment. Say:

  • “I don’t know what to say. Thank you.”
  • “That’s very kind of you. Thank you.”

You’re the best. / I owe you one. / You rock.

Your friend at work stayed late to help you finish a project.

  • “You’re the best. I wouldn’t have finished this on time without you.”
  • “I really owe you one. Thanks for staying late. Next time you need help, I’ve got it.”

What would I do without you? / To say thank you is not enough. / I can’t thank you enough.

You had a stressful and difficult day at work. Your husband said he would take care of dinner and do all the cleanup. Say:

  • “What would I do without you? You’re wonderful.”
  • “I can’t thank you enough. I really need a night off.”

“Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.” -Eileen Caddy

Say Thank You in English — Formal Situations

Some daily situations – at work and in our personal lives – require more formal language. And this is often true in writing.

For example, if you’re expressing thankfulness or gratitude in a speech at a wedding, a formal reception or networking event, or in a lecture, it would be appropriate to choose more formal language.

Or if you’re writing thank you notes to friends and family members; if you’re sending an email to say thank you to a new client; or writing to another company, again, you’ll want to use these more formal expressions.

I’m so grateful for… / I’m so thankful for… / Many thanks for…

Writing some thank you notes to friends who helped you after the birth of a baby or while you were helping a sick parent?

  • “I’m so grateful for your help. It was a challenging time but you made it easier. Thank you.”
  • “I’m so thankful friends like you.”

I truly appreciate… / Thank you ever so much for… / It’s so kind of you to…

Are you sending an email to everyone on your team at work for working overtime or volunteering to work on a Saturday?

  • “I truly appreciate everyone’s efforts and commitments to our success. Thank you for taking time out of your personal time to meet our deadline.”
  • “It was kind of each of you – and your families – to give up a Saturday to help our company volunteer at the 10km race to benefit cancer research.”

Thank you for going through the trouble to… / Thank you for taking the time to…

Did one of your business contacts take some extra time to give you some information you needed? Send an email to say thank you…

  • “Hi, Samantha. I just wanted to send a note to say thank you for taking the trouble to answer all my questions. I know you are busy and I appreciate that you took the time to respond quickly. Thank you.”

I’m eternally grateful for… / I cannot thank you enough for… / I want you to know how much I value… / Words cannot describe how grateful I am for… / Please accept my deepest thanks for…

Sometimes we have very difficult times in our lives. Maybe a loved one becomes ill. Someone passes away. Or perhaps you lose a job.

Tragedies happen. These can be terribly stressful times. If you are writing someone to thank them to help you, these expressions are most appropriate.

  • “I’m eternally grateful to you for providing dinners to my family while I was in the hospital. I felt comforted knowing they were well-feed.”
  • “Words cannot express how grateful I am for your help after my mom passed away. I was devastated and you helped me get through each day. ”

Say Thank You in English — Professional Situations

If you are writing an official business email or business letter, then it’s best to use professional, formal expressions to show your thanks or appreciation.

For example, you may be writing to thank someone or to thank another company for their help. Or perhaps you want to express your gratitude for them working with you this year.

Thank you for your assistance with… / Thank you for your attention to this matter

  • “Thank you for your assistance with/attention to this matter. We look forward to hearing from you shortly.”

Your support is greatly appreciated. / I’d like to express my/our appreciation for… / Thank you for your kind consideration.

  • “Your support in this discussion is greatly appreciated and we look forward to continuing our work with you.”
  • “On behalf of our company, I’d like to sincerely express our appreciation for your business this year. We wish you Happy Holidays and look forward to another successful year together.”

After you’ve watched the video and reviewed the lesson, I’d love to hear from you!

hello, your website is very helpful. I have a question what does “I’m so thankful friends like you.” actually means?

Shannon

‘Thanks a bunch’ isn’t a way to say thanks in authentic English – it’s sarcasm, meaning the person didn’t help you at all.

Reza Foyouzi

Thank you for all the explanations, but I just found out (Thanks a lot, and thanks a bunch) are not equal to ((Thank you, or Thank you so much)) in normal situation, and they are used sarcastically, once you’re angry, surprised and so forth. How would you explain this?

Hi Annemarie, I truly appreciate your effort in helping us non-native speakers of English to get a grip on the nuances of thanking someone. I need to have a go on thanking someone in writing very formally for the opportunity to apply for a job. That is how I found your page. After reading your blog (I have problems waching videos) I would go for something like that: Dear Sir, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to apply for a position as …. or Many thanks for the opportunity to apply for a position as What are your thoughts on …  Read more »

I really appreciated the information you’ve provided us with. However, I still have one qustion: are these gratitude forms concentrated more on British or American English? What are the differences between these two communicative cultures in terms of expressing gratitude?

I’m glad it was a helpful lesson. I’m American so most of what I share is from American speech and culture.

Simon

Yeah, “Thanks a bunch” would more likely be taken as sarcasm for us brits…so could easily have the opposite effect/be taken the wrong way…

Hi Simon, that’s true. It can also be taken as sarcasm in American English as well. It all depends on the tone when speaking.

Many thanks . A lot of stuffs I have gotten from this

Trump speaks out following rally shooting: 'I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin'

  • Trump in a post on Truth Social spoke out about the shooting at his Pennsylvania rally.
  • He thanked law enforcement, the Secret Service, and sent condolences to the victim's family.
  • Trump wrote that he was shot, saying he " immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin."

Insider Today

Several hours after a shooting during his rally in Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump in a post on social media confirmed he had been struck in the ear during the incident.

"I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. "Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured."

He added: "It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!"

Photos from the shooting show Trump with blood on his face . He can be seen defiantly raising his fist before being whisked off stage by Secret Service agents.

Per a Secret Service statement, one spectator was killed at the rally , and two remain critically injured. The shooter was "neutralized" by the Secret Service personnel, the statement said.

a speech on thanks

Keir Starmer's first speech as Prime Minister: 5 July 2024

Keir Starmer gave his first speech as Prime Minister on the steps of Downing Street.

Keir Starmer

Keir Starmer’s first speech as Prime Minister BSL

Good afternoon…

I have just returned from Buckingham Palace…

Where I accepted an invitation from His Majesty the King…

To form the next government of this great nation.

I want to thank the outgoing Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.

His achievement as the first British Asian Prime Minister of our country…

The extra effort that will have required…

Should not be underestimated by anyone.

We pay tribute to that today…

And we also recognise the dedication and hard work he brought to his leadership.

But now our country has voted, decisively…

For change.

For national renewal.

And a return of politics to public service.

When the gap between the sacrifices made by people…

And the service they receive from politicians…

Grows this big.

It leads to a weariness in the heart of a nation.

A draining away of the hope, the spirit, the belief in a better future…

That we need to move forward, together.

Now, this wound…

This lack of trust…

Can only be healed by actions not words…

I know that.

But we can make a start today…

With the simple acknowledgment…

That public service is a privilege.

And that your government should treat every single person in this country…

With respect.

If you voted for Labour yesterday…

We will carry the responsibility of your trust, as we rebuild our country.

But whether you voted Labour or not…

In fact - especially if you did not…

I say to you, directly…

My government will serve you.

Politics can be a force for good - we will show that.

And that is how we will govern.

Country first, party second.

Yet, if I’m honest…

Service is merely a pre-condition for hope.

And it is surely clear to everyone…

That our country needs a bigger reset…

A rediscovery of who we are.

Because no matter how fierce the storms of history…

One of the great strengths of this nation…

Has always been our ability to navigate a way through to calmer waters.

And yet this depends upon politicians…

Particularly those who stand for stability and moderation - as I do…

Recognising when we must change course.

For too long now…

We have turned a blind eye as millions slid into greater insecurity.

Nurses, builders, drivers, carers…

People doing the right thing

Working harder than ever…

Recognised - at moments like this, before.

Yet as soon as the cameras stop rolling…

Their lives are ignored.

I want to say very clearly to those people - not this time.

Changing a country is not like flicking a switch…

And the world is now a more volatile place.

This will take a while.

But have no doubt that the work of change begins - immediately.

Have no doubt - that we will rebuild Britain…

With wealth created in every community.

Our NHS back on its feet, facing the future.

Secure borders…

Safer streets…

Everyone treated with dignity and respect at work.

The opportunity of clean British power…

Cutting your energy bills for good.

And, brick by brick…

We will rebuild the infrastructure of opportunity…

The world class schools and colleges…

The affordable homes that I know…

Are the ingredients of hope for working people…

The security that working class families like mine…

Could build their lives around.

Because if I asked you, now…

Whether you believe that Britain will be better for your children…

I know - too many of you would say: no.

And so my government will fight, every day…

Until you believe again.

From now on…

You have a government unburdened by doctrine…

Guided only by a determination to serve your interests…

To defy, quietly…

Those who have written our country off.

You have given us a clear mandate…

And we will use it to deliver change…

To restore service and respect to politics…

End the era of noisy performance…

Tread more lightly on your lives…

And unite our country.

Four nations…

Standing together again…

Facing down, as we have so often in our past…

The challenges of an insecure world…

Committed - to a calm and patient rebuilding.

So with respect and humility…

I invite you all…

To join this government of service…

In the mission of national renewal.

Our work is urgent…

And we begin it today.

Anti-abortion street preachers lose free speech lawsuit against Grants Pass

The city of Grants Pass won a lawsuit on Thursday from anti-abortion street preachers who claimed police had harassed them for years.

The jury delivered a decision in less than an hour against the group Abolish Abortion Oregon. The verdict resolves a years-long lawsuit over whether or not Grants Pass Police targeted the group for their beliefs.

The preachers use bullhorns at city events and outside a local Planned Parenthood clinic in Grants Pass, disrupting residents and businesses.

During closing arguments at the U.S. District Court in Medford, the city’s lawyer, Robert Franz, said that the plaintiffs not only knew they were being disruptive to nearby businesses, they wanted the attention. He said police were targeting them repeatedly because neighbors were complaining repeatedly about the noise.

“This case isn’t about one person or two people or three people or four people,” Franz said about the number of complaints over the protester’s noise levels.

The lawyer for the plaintiffs, Ray Hacke, argued that people only complain about things they don’t like. And because abortion is such a heated topic, it’s more likely to cause reactions.

Hacke said the preachers intend to still protest in Grants Pass, but they’ll have no choice but to lower their volume because of the verdict.

He said there should be different standards for what constitutes unreasonable noise, such as specific decibel levels.

Hacke said he hopes to appeal this ruling to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He’d like to challenge the constitutionality of the state’s disorderly conduct law.

Remarks by President   Biden

Roosevelt Room

2:05 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:   Good afternoon.  Last night, I spoke with Donald Trump.  I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering.  And we had a short but good conversation.

Jill and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers.

We also extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed.  He was a father.  He was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired, and he lost his life.  God love him.

We’re also praying for the full recovery of those who were injured.  And we’re grateful to the Secret Service agents and other law enforcement agencies who — and individuals who risked their lives, literally, for our nation.

As I said last night, there is no place in America for this kind of violence or for any violence for that matter.

An assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a na- — as a nation.  Everything.  It’s not who we are as a nation.  It’s not America, and we cannot allow this to happen.

Unity is the most elusive goal of all, but nothing is important than that right now — unity.

We’ll debate, and we’ll disagree.  That’s not — that’s not going to change.  But it’s going to — we’re going to not lose sight of the fact of who we are as Americans.

Look, Vice President Harris and I were just briefed in the Situation Room by my homeland security team, including the director of the FBI, the secretary of Homeland Security, the attorney general, the director of the Secret Service, my homeland security advisor, the national security advisor.  And we’re going to continue to be briefed.

The FBI is leading this investigation, which is still in its early stages.  We don’t yet have any information about the motive of the shooter.  We know who he is.  I urge everyone — everyone, please, don’t make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations.

Let the FBI do their job, and their partner agencies do their job.  I’ve instructed that this investigation be thorough and swift.  And the investigators will have every resource they need to get this done.

Look, as this investigation continues, here’s what we’re going to do.

First, Mr. Trump, as a former president and nominee of the Republican Party already receives a heightened level of security, and I have been consistent in my direction to the Secret Service to provide him with every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety.

Second, I’ve directed the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures for the — all security measures for the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to start tomorrow.

And third, I’ve directed an independent review of the national security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened.  And we’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people as well.

And, finally, I’ll be speaking more about this tonight at greater length from the Oval Office: We must unite as one nation.  We must unite as one nation to demonstrate who we are.

And so, may God bless you all.  And may God protect our troops.

Thank you very much.

Biden Mixes Up Kamala Harris and Donald Trump After Doing the Same With Zelensky and Putin

The gaffe referring to his own running mate as “Vice President Trump” during a closely watched news conference came shortly after he introduced the president of Ukraine as “President Putin.”

Biden Mixes Up Trump and Harris

In an attempt to defend vice president kamala harris, president biden fumbled his answer to a reporter’s question and referred to “vice president trump” instead of vice president harris..

“What concerns do you have about Vice President Harris’s ability to beat Donald Trump if she were at the top of the ticket?“ “Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president did I think she was not qualified to be president. So let’s start there. No. 1. The fact is that — the consideration is that I think I’m the most qualified person to run for president. I beat him once, and I will beat him again.”

Reporting from Washington

President Biden referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump,” flubbing his response to the first question posed to him in a much-awaited news conference during a summit of NATO leaders.

Mr. Biden was asked by a Reuters reporter if he had concerns about Ms. Harris’s ability to beat former President Donald J. Trump if he stepped aside, something he has said emphatically that he will not do despite pressure from many within his party.

“Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I didn’t think she was qualified to be president,” he said.

Mr. Biden had another gaffe earlier in the evening, introducing President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine as “President Putin” after a meeting of NATO leaders in Washington.

“I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he does determination,” Mr. Biden said from the lectern with Mr. Zelensky at his side. “Ladies and gentlemen: President Putin.”

Mr. Biden stepped away from the lectern before realizing his mistake.

“President Putin?” Mr. Biden said as he returned to the microphone. “We’re going to beat President Putin. President Zelensky. I’m so focused on beating Putin. We got to worry about it. Anyway.”

Mr. Biden turned to shake Mr. Zelensky’s hand. The Ukrainian president joked, “I’m better,” to which Mr. Biden replied, “You are a hell of a lot better.”

Biden Calls Zelensky ‘Putin’ at NATO Event

President biden introduced president volodymyr zelensky of ukraine as president putin before correcting himself on thursday afternoon after a nato meeting..

“Now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination. Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin. President Putin! You can beat President Putin. President Zelensky! I’m so focused on beating Putin, we’ve got to worry about it. Anyway, Mr. President - ” “I’m better.” “You are a hell of a lot better.”

The gaffes could not have been more ill-timed for the Biden campaign, coming as the president battles a crisis of confidence among Democrats considering if he is the best candidate to beat Mr. Trump in November. The news conference where Mr. Biden mixed up Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris was much anticipated by Democratic defenders and skeptics of the president’s re-election campaign, who planned to scrutinize the appearance to gauge his viability as a candidate.

Mr. Biden’s remarks mixing up Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky, which happened roughly around 5:40 p.m. Eastern time, was included by ABC, CBS and NBC in their 6:30 p.m. newscasts, the most-watched news programs in the country.

The Biden campaign made a quick effort to put a humorous spin on the Putin error. An official social media account shared a clip of the verbal slip , focusing on Mr. Zelensky’s joke that he was “better.”

The move to further highlight the error perplexed some, even within the Trump campaign. A social media account run by a pro-Trump super PAC joked that “one of our employees logged into the wrong account” and mistakenly shared the gaffe from the Biden campaign account.

Soon after, Mr. Trump mocked Mr. Biden in a post on his social media site for mixing him up with Ms. Harris, linking a clip of the gaffe with the text “Great job, Joe!”
