Volleyball: National Game Of Nepal

Kapil Karki

Every country has a unique profile that defines it, whether it be in the form of culture, festivals, religions, and practices or even sports. When we talk about the National Sports of any country, it directly links us to the traditions and the people. The word national itself represents patriotism and the country as a whole. So it is no wonder that the national game of Nepal has a high significance in amongst its people. While the National sports in countries vary, some might be established by the law and some not. The national game of a nation depends on many factors. Some of them are the geographical or political factors, the local culture, but the main factor is how much it is played. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to depend on it solely. If that were the case, Football and Cricket associations would take the lead in most countries. As for Nepal, national games have a different history. Dandi Biyo has been unofficially considered the national game of Nepal for a long time but after 2017, Volleyball was declared as the national game of Nepal .

With such a diverse country like Nepal, having a unique game as its national game for decades is no surprise. Dandi Biyo is a game founded and played in the rural areas of Nepal. The game has been the essence of rural Nepal for a long time and represents many of today’s adults’ childhoods. For example, if you ask an elderly person about this game, you might get to hear stories about their ventures with friends and how they used to play the game. These ancient values are what makes the game so unique.

However, in recent years, the popularity of Dandi Biyo is decreasing. While a wave of modernization is hitting Nepal, we might be leaving this ancient game in the past. The government has not implemented any policies to protect the game, which can cause this game to go extinct shortly.

Similarly, Volleyball has gained a lot of attention in Nepal in the past few years. While it is not the most played game in Nepal, it is one that is convenient and accessible for the citizens in this developing nation. Some of these factors have made it possible for Volleyball to win the spot as the National Sports of Nepal.

In the present, both of these games are considered as the national games of Nepal. While Volleyball has been officially declared as the National sports by the Government of Nepal, Dandi Biyo has a historical value. Due to this reason, Dandi Biyo has held its significance in Nepal, but the coming generations might not even know a game like that ever existed.

Here’s A Detailed Overview Of The National Games Of Nepal

1. dandi biyo.

volleyball essay in nepali

Dandi Biyo is a sport played in the rural areas of Nepal. It was regarded as Nepal’s national sport before Volleyball was formally proclaimed national game of Nepal on May 23, 2017. It is played around two or three meters long stick (Dandi) and about a seven inches long wooden pin (Biyo). A small stick with pointy ends represents the pin in Dandi Biyo.

History Of Dandi Biyo

Dandi Biyo was a popular game among Nepali youths. The peak of this game was most likely between the 1980s and 1990s when modernization had not hit the country yet. Videogames and mobile phones were not available, and people used to be more active outdoors.

Dandi Biyo is one of many games that were locally developed in the rural areas which reflect the use of local tools and techniques. While comparing with modern games, it is easier to understand when compared to Cricket. The major players can be compared to the “batsmen” and the other players to the “fielders.”

How Dandi Biyo’s played?

Two or more players play Dandi Biyo. The wooden stick is positioned in the floor through a four-inch deep hole. One competitor places inside the pit, one half of the stick and keeps the other edge. To shoot the pin into the air, the person jerks the stick against the pin while other teams called’ fielders’ attempt to catch the pin. If one of the fielders catches the pin in the atmosphere, the turn is over, and the catcher takes the pin. If the pin hits the ground instead, the player plays again for points.

2. Volleyball: National Game Of Nepal

volleyball essay in nepali

Volleyball is a prevalent sport as well as the national game of Nepal. It is easy to play in every part of the country, including the hill, the Himalayan, and Terai regions. The government decision about making the Volleyball as a national game of Nepal was mainly based on the growing popularity of the sport in Nepal. Only a small area is enough, along with other light rules to play the game. This makes it more accessible in our country, where people seek light recreational activities.

How Volleyball’s Played?

Volleyball is a prevalent two-team sport in Nepal, generally with six players on the one hand. The participants use their fingers to bat a game over a high net and attempt to get the ball to reach the court within the play region of the rivals before returning it. To avoid the ball from touching the ground on their side, a person on the opposite squad passes the ball to a teammate before it crosses the surface of the court — that teammate can then cast it over the net or shoot it to another teammate who volleys it across the net. In this game, only three hits of the ball are permitted to a team before they pass it over the net.

Some of the games held in Nepal in 2019 are Football (Men’ s/Women’s), athletics, boxing (Men’s), taekwondo, karate, volleyball (Men’ s/Women’s), Table Tennis, kabaddi, badminton, wushu, handball (Men’s), Kho Kho (Men’s), ITF Taekwondo, full-contact karate, basketball, weightlifting, wrestling, judo, bodybuilding, hockey, chess, golf, billiard and snooker, cycling , archery, swimming, squash, soft tennis, lawn tennis, gymnastics, boxing (Women’s), cricket, shooting, weightlifting (Women’s), Volleyball, and Dandi Biyo. These are the popular sports in Nepal where many sportspersons have been able to achieve remarkable recognition.

Sports are being popular in our country, Nepal, with a change in the government and developmental activities flourishing in the country. In the coming years, Nepal hopes to host many national and international tournaments to promote sports in the country. We believe this can help in introducing new games to the country along with rejuvenating ancient sports.

Volleyball is a popular sport in Nepal, with a history that dates back to the mid-20th century. The sport is governed by the Volleyball Association of Nepal (VAN) and is a member of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC).

Volleyball was first introduced to Nepal in the 1950s, and since then it has grown in popularity. The Nepali national volleyball team has competed in various international tournaments such as the South Asian Games and the Asian Games. The team has also performed well in the domestic volleyball tournaments such as the National Volleyball Championship.

Nepali Volleyball or Volleyball in Nepal

Despite the lack of resources and support for volleyball in Nepal, the sport has continued to grow in popularity. The country has a strong tradition of volleyball and the sport is played by people of all ages and genders. The Nepali national volleyball team has a dedicated following of fans who support the team during international and domestic matches.

One of the key challenges facing Nepali volleyball is a lack of infrastructure and facilities. Many of the country’s volleyball courts are in poor condition, and there are not enough venues to host matches. Additionally, there is a lack of funding and support for the sport, which makes it difficult for players to train and compete at a high level.

Despite these challenges, the Nepali national volleyball team has made progress in recent years. The team has produced some talented players like Deepak Bista, Dipesh Shrestha, and Rajesh Pulami Magar, who have represented the country in various international tournaments. The team has also performed well in the domestic volleyball tournaments such as the National Volleyball Championship.

In conclusion, Volleyball is a popular sport in Nepal, with a rich history dating back to the mid-20th century. The sport is governed by the Volleyball Association of Nepal (VAN) and is a member of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC). Despite the lack of resources and support for volleyball in Nepal, the sport has continued to grow in popularity and the Nepali national volleyball team has made progress in recent years. However, the team still faces many challenges, such as a lack of infrastructure and funding, and will need support to continue to develop and compete at the highest level.

It’s official: Volleyball is the national sport of Nepal

Onlinekhabar

Kathmandu, May 23

The government on Monday decided to recognise volleyball as the national sport of Nepal.

A Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar made the decision, the government spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communications Surendra Kumar Karki informed after the meeting.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports had forwarded a proposal to the Cabinet seeking the recognition.

Earlier, the Nepal Volleyball Association had been demanding that volleyball be recognised as the national sport citing the game can be played within smaller spaces and in any kind of geographical terrain whereas it is economically accessible to most of the Nepalis.

The NVA has thanked the government for the decision.

However, stakeholders complain of lack of infrastructures including well-facilitated covered halls for the sport.

Before the decision, there was not any sport discipline recognised as the national game in Nepal, though some believed kabaddi or dandibiyo was.

खेलकुद को महत्व नेपाली निबन्ध (Importance of sports Essay in Nepali)

Importance of sports Essay in Nepali : In this article we are providing  खेलकुद को महत्व नेपाली निबन्ध for Class 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Read here  Khelkud ko Mahato in Nepali for Students.

(Importance of sports Essay in Nepali)

  • Nepal is situated in the Himalayas and is a country that houses multiple cultures and ethnicities.
  • 123 languages are spoken in Nepal.
  • Though volleyball is the national sport, football (soccer) is the most popular.
  • The population of Nepal is mostly Hindu, with the next most-practiced religion being Buddhism
  • A lot of performance and art in Nepal is inspired from Hindu religious mythology.

Nepal is a sovereign state in South Asia , situated in the Himalayas. This landlocked country has a population of approximately 29 million people in 2020 and borders China and India. The country’s capital and largest city is Kathmandu. The country has a rich, multi-ethnic and multi-dimensional culture based on ancient traditions and social customs. The Nepalese culture is closely related to the culture of the more massive Indian Sub-continent and is influenced by the cultures of India and Tibet.

Ethnicity, Language, And Religion

volleyball essay in nepali

Nepal is a multiethnic and multicultural country that came into existence through the progressive, political merging of smaller kingdoms and principalities such as Videha, Mustang, Limbuwan, and Madhesh. The northern part of the country is inhabited by Limbu, Rai, and Mongolian people while the Sherpa, Magar, Gurung and Lama people inhabit the western and central regions.

There are approximately 123 languages spoken in Nepal. The major language is Nepali, spoken by 44.6% of the population as mother tongue. Other main languages include Maithili, Tamang, Tharu, and Bhojpuri. There are two main religions in Nepal; Buddhism and Hinduism. However, some Nepalese practice a unique combination of the two religions. The majority of the population, 80%, are Hindu while 11% practice Buddhism. Islam is practiced by about 3.2% of the population. Christians are \bout 1% of the population.

Nepalese cuisine is comprised of a variety of cuisines from the different ethnicities of the country and has been influenced by Asian culture. In most instances, a meal is never complete without a sizeable amount of rice. Rice is mainly served with daal, a spiced lentil soup, and vegetable curry called tarkari.

Meals are eaten twice a day; late morning and early evening. Mostly, the meals also include “achar” which pickled vegetables or fruit. Rice may also be supplemented with flatbread known as “roti.” Traditionally, people eat from their individual plates using their hands and while seated on the floor.

Nepalese Traditional Clothing

volleyball essay in nepali

Each of the ethnic groups in Nepal has its own traditional clothing. However, most of these follow the same pattern. Men’s traditional clothes are referred to as “Daura Suruwal.” Daura is a double-breasted shirt while Suruwal are simple baggy trousers that fit tightly at the ankle. Other items of clothing include jackets and a vest. The combination of a jacket and Daura Suruwal is considered informal traditional wear. A Daura does not have buttons or clasps and is often held in its place by four ties, two close to the waist and two near the shoulders. The national hat is called “Dhaka topi” and is often worn by the men.

The traditional outfit for the women is called “Kurta Suruwal.” It consists of a long blouse, sleeveless or short-sleeved and usually extending below the hips, light baggy pants, and a large scarf. The clothing is loose and usually brightly coloured and with patterns. The scarf is also long and matches with the rest of the outfit. It is draped over the body.

Literature, Art, And Craft

volleyball essay in nepali

Nepalese literature dates back to the 19th century with the adaptation of the Hindu “Ramayan” by the Bhanubhakta Acharya for the Nepali readership. The development of literature in the country has been hampered by the heavy government censorship and control, forcing most authors and poets to seek publication outside the country. Several Nepali authors have been actively writing innovative Nepali literature since the Democratic revolution of 1991. Some of these authors include Khagendra Sangraula, Yuyutsu Sharma, Narayan Wagle, and Toya Gurung.

Much of Nepalese art is considered religious. The Newar people are responsible for most of the examples of the traditional art and architecture of Nepal. They are known for craftsmanship, Paubha painting, and sculpture. The Newari create a caste-bronze statue of Hindu and Buddhist deities.

Performance Arts

volleyball essay in nepali

Performance art also focuses on religious themes drawn from Hindu epics. Political satire is also very common as well as comedic forms. Nepal has a rich musical heritage with several distinctive vocal styles and instruments. Music is popular across all age groups and has become a marker of identity, especially among the younger generation. The older generation prefers folk songs and religious music while the younger generation is attracted to western and experimental film music. Performance art such as music and dancing is a very important part of festivals and celebrations. The end of the plowing season is often marked by songs, shouts, and dances.

Several sports are played in Nepal, both at the national and international levels. The most popular sport in the country is football (known in the US and Canada as soccer), followed by cricket. The Nepalese national cricket team has even participated in the World Cup and other international competitions. However, the national sport of Nepal is volleyball.

The sport with the most tournaments in Nepal is football, and they are held across the country. The Nepal football national team won gold in the 2016 South Asia Games. According to the 2018 FIFA ranking, Nepal holds position 165.

Life In Society

volleyball essay in nepali

Nepal is a multi-ethnic society with a rich culture and religious practices. Visitors are required to embrace native customs while visiting certain places such as temples. Like the locals, they must put on a respectable dress with no leather, remove their shoes, and ask for permission before entering the Hindu temple. Nepalis are generally friendly. However, public display of affection is not appreciated.

Superstition still rules the country. Interestingly, praising a baby’s appearance or walking on spilled rice brings bad luck. Red chillies are almost everywhere and are believed to drive away the evil spirit. The family is very important in Nepalese culture. Like much of the world, for a very long time, women were honored as mothers and had little access to education and political power. Men were the heads of their respective families and were required to provide for them. While there has been progress for the rights of women in recent decades, this progress has been slow to reach the regions outside of the urban centres.

Volleyball Essay In English

Volleyball, as mentioned in the above section, involves two teams of six members each. The teams are separated on the court by a net. The teams have to "bat" the ball using only their hands to pass the ball back and forth over the net. The game aims to pass the ball onto the next team without letting it touch the ground. The team which succeeds in making the ball fall on the ground of the opponent’s side gets a point. At the end of the game, the team with the highest point wins.

Rules of Volleyball

Volleyball has an extensive set of rules. In the following, those are described in brief.

The game of volleyball starts when one player of a team, standing behind the back boundary line of the court, begins a rally by serving the opposite team with the ball. The ball must travel to the side of the opposition team without touching the net.

The receiving team must prevent the ball from falling on the ground and pass it onto the court of the opponent. Each team gets to touch the ball a maximum of 3 times amongst the team members before passing it to the other team. However, an individual player can only touch a ball once before passing.

The rally continues unless a team makes the ball fall on the ground of the opposition or one team commits a fault and loses. Some faults can include touching the net, more than the allowed number of touches by the team or a player of the team, stepping outside the court boundaries, and so on.

Each time a team wins the serve, they must rotate. The entire team is required to switch the sides moving in a clockwise manner with one player moving in a front line whereas another player moving to the backline.

Tournaments In Volleyball

Volleyball is a very popular sport and has its tournaments. The most famous of which is the FIVB Volleyball Grand Champions cup.  It is an international tournament where several countries are represented by their men's and women's teams. Apart from this, India has its national-level volleyball tournament. There are also several state-level and district-level tournaments of volleyball. A game of volleyball can be exciting as well as unpredictable. It is both interesting to watch and exciting to play. Playing volleyball can also be a very good form of physical activity for novices. The professionals, however, require dedicated practice.

1. Nepalese languages

O nce in Nepal , communities remained completely isolated by steep valleys, high mountains and by thick forest, leading to the evolution of many distinct languages, given as 92 in the 2001 census but now put by ethnologue at 124 distinct living languages . This increase in number seems mostly related to distinguishing dialects within larger groups previously thought to belong to a single linguistic community. Ethnologue’s linguistic map for Nepal , reproduced in Figure 1 , shows the hot spot of languages scattered across the country.

The Linguistic Map of Nepal

Fig 1. The Linguistic Map of Nepal.

If we take Trosterud’s suggestion that at least those languages with more than 16,000 speakers should be written, we find that we should expect all languages down to and including Dhimal should be written; this is 28 languages, just under one third of the languages, in line with the proportion in the population of world languages as a whole. Table 3, lists these 28 languages plus two others, with relevant characteristics extracted from Ethnologue. Note that 8 of them have much larger populations across the border in India, with one of these, Maithili, the second largest language of Nepal. This leaves 20 Nepalese languages, only one of which, Nepali , is used in written form in all walks of life and can be considered fully literate; however most of them have at least some limited use in writing.

2. Nepalese writing

However only four of these purely Nepalese languages have any significant tradition of being written:

Ethnologue only reports limited literacy for Newari and Limbu, not surprising since these languages were suppressed by successive Nepalese governments from the late 18th century onwards until 1990. While the writing of Limbu and Lepcha was probably only ever used for special cultural and religious texts, Newar writing was used for a wide range of purposes until the overthrow of their regime by the Gorkhas in the mid 18th century.

Note that cross border languages, and particularly Maithili and Bhojpuri, also have their own mature literature and may be written in their own distinctive script; for Maithili the script is known as Mithilakshar or Tirhuta, for Bhojpuri it is Kaithi.

Indic writing including Devanagari and Bengali has been printed in movable type since around 1800, with the type evolving and being simplified over the centuries. When computers became used for writing and publishing, the encoding of Devanagari and other Indic scripts was undertaken in India, leading to the Indian Script Code for Information Interchange – ISCII. Work had been proposed to include Devanagari within the then established standard for computers, ISO 8859, as part 12, but this work was abandoned expecting to adopt ISCII’s codes into ISO 8859. However ISO 8859 was in turn superseded by Unicode, which included a code block for Devanagari and other major Indic scripts from the start, with the code blocks adapted from a 1988 version of ISCII. One significant difference between ISCII and Unicode was that in ISCII all the scripts of India had been unified within a single table, with the different scripts selected by appropriate font, whereas in Unicode these were dis-unified into separate code blocks.

The encoding of Limbu was added to the Unicode Standard in April 2003 with the release of version 4.0. Limbu was introduced to the standardisation process by McGowan and Everson in 1999, and a proposal was written jointly by Boyd Michaelovsky and Michael Everson in 2002. Michaelovsky is a linguist who has done considerable field research among the Limbu in Nepal learning about their writing in context, appealing in the proposal to both examples of writing and to the phonology of the spoken language. Even so there have been some discussions since then about missing characters, and in 2011 Pandey proposed two additional composite characters, though there is a case for introducing the virama instead.
