Personal statement of purpose - msc public health share.

  • 12 May, 2013

I am keen to undertake the MSc Public Health course at Birmingham City University (BCU) to fill in my academic gap in knowledge and skills in the contemporary trending functional areas of Health. My Pharmacology & Therapeutics background has given me the drive to move my career to increasing awareness of disease prevention.

My previous study of BS in Pharmacology & Therapeutics at Delta State University, NigeriaIprovided me with comprehensive knowledge in core Health functions while covering other related functions that Public Health organizations possibly have. During BS in Pharmacology & Therapeutics studies over the last four years, the excellent course structure coupled with high academic standards further stimulated my interest in the field of Health. After graduating I chose to work for Temitayo Clinic & Mat. Home, Lagos to learn about Medical performance and develop professionalism. That was a great experience for me. One of the most valuable things I learned from my BS and work experience is a structured way of thinking that has enabled me to have greater clarity of the things I need to accomplish and respective priorities both in my academic and professional life. Following lead from my attainments, the study of this MSc Public Health degree will help me develop great interpersonal skills, be a quick problem solver and overall a health professional.

At BCU, this MSc Public Health programme is taught by professionals and entrepreneurs. This program is made up of courses for health, designed to provide the knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful career. This course is designed to help students understand how health regulation operates in a global public health. In this class,I will have the chance to be introduced to the principal perspectives on several of the key issues and topics in Public Health Foundations, Public Health: From Health Protection to Community Development, Global Public Health: A Social Context Approach, Epidemiology and Evaluation, Leadership and Project Management for Health and Healthcare, Research Methods of Enquiry and Dissertation. Those are to help me understand different components of the career of public health.

Successful completion of this MSc Public Health degree would enhance my career prospects, enabling me to progress on to senior roles at either operational, policy or commissioning level in a wide range of areas. In addition, Public health research and practice is at the heart of tackling many of the world’s current threats to health including the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The study will provide me the opportunity to develop the skills and understanding needed to become a leader and agent for change in Public Health. From the study, I will be able to advance my public health knowledge, skills and approach to teamwork, multi-agency collaboration and community partnerships throughout the modules on this course and critically evaluate strategies to improve public health outcomes. These skills are increasingly relevant for the public health workforce and while in profession I will be able to use these in a variety of settings including multilateral and international NGOs, local health authorities, National Public Health authorities, the voluntary or the private sector.

During my studies in the UK, there will be an opportunity for me to develop the critical thinking skills, creativity and confidence that employers look for. The advantages of doing my degree from the UK will obviously boost my employability. UK qualifications are worldwide recognized. Choosing to study overseas at a UK university has many financial, cultural and social advantages as well. A shorter and a more intensive course structure means I will be able to fast-track my career. The UK welcomes over 400,000 international higher education students each year. Sitting at the top of the world rankings, UK universities have a reputation for developing the skills that employers are looking for. UK universities have an impressive international reputation and rank among the best in the world four of the global top ten is in the UK! This course has been developed in alignment with the Public Health Knowledge and Skills Framework (PHKSF, 2016) and the UK National Occupational Standards for Public Health. At BCU, I will have the opportunity to present my work at the University Faculty conference and at other relevant conferences. The university hosted a series of events to rewrite the world-renowned Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (World Health Organisation) as the UK Charter and gained international reputation in the area of health. With hospital ward, biomedical laboratories, simulation mannequins, skills practice and clinical enhancement facility, visual case creator resources alongside one of the UK's largest specialist health education libraries, Mary Seacole Library, BCU is my first choice for this course in the UK.

With this letter, I hereby wish to state my interest and apply for Master Degree program in Public Health at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA. The reason people do not live healthier life style, take necessary precautions against illness and practice preventive medicine in reducing mortality and morbidity rate which are not just the basis of Public health but also have advantageous economic values is a cause of concern to me. My curious nature endear me to study Medical Laboratory Sciences at the undergraduate level which has provided me with the solid foundation in every areas of Public Health and has further helped me in appreciating the mechanism of disease conditions, progressions and diagnostic result. Through passion, confidence and a strong desire to excel made me graduate with Honors and ranked 6th overall in my class.

My believe that ‘Good things always happen to those who work hard’ has been a source of inspiration to me especially in my undergraduate program which gave me the basic knowledge and solid foundation to excel in Statistics, Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, Virology, Molecular biology, Mycology, Immunology, hematology, Blood Group Serology, Chemical pathology, Biotechnology and research. My internship and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) period has further strengthen my interest, fuelled my resolve, increase my confidence and determination which has equipped me with practical and research knowledge to exhibit sound professional ethics and independent laboratory techniques. The seminar I had with the AIDS PREVENTION INITIATIVE IN NIGERIA (APIN) on the laboratory equipment use and maintenance has further improved my handling of laboratory equipment for efficient and quality result output.

My Alma Mata, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has provided me with laboratory and research exposure through the organized departmental practical classes, hospital posting and encouraged research participation in the project work of senior colleagues. That has made me develop and polish my unique independent thinking and leadership quality which was acknowledged by my undergraduate project supervisor, MR B.S.A OSENI and made evident in my appointment as the leader of the research group. Being the leader of the project group increased my involvement in many research works of fellow research group mate which has helped me gain valuable knowledge and confidence. In addition, I was involved in tutoring my junior colleagues in the department on course subject that they find difficult and uninteresting which is in tandem with my fond believe that a knowledge shared can only multiply.

The environment that I grew up in Africa has created in me a continuous awareness of the negative impact of disease in the society majorly due to bad cultural practice, poverty, neglect and ignorance which has resulted in the reduction of the average life expectancy of the area. Having experienced at first hand, a situation where most people are suffering from one illness or other conditions that are either relatively unknown in the United State of America or are highly preventative and the adverse effect of a neglected society has increased my determination and passion to make a difference. I believe very strongly that I can be part of the major transposition in America and the World at large in the health field if allowed to proceed with my Masters in Public Health, where I can be inspired to contribute significantly through an open exchange of ideas, knowledge, leadership, accountability and professionalism.

Public Health excite me the most among the sub-disciplines of Medicine based on the wide area of focus in helping to prevent and solving both major and minor health issues like no other field. I am specifically interested in epidemiology and community health which are the cornerstone of public health in my opinion with a role in informing policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and target for preventive healthcare. In addition, I am interested in disease causative mechanism, transmission, outbreak analysis, disease screening and surveillance, biological monitoring, comparison of treatment effect and effective provision of quality healthcare to members of a population in a way that is consistent with the community’s cultural policy and health resource values. I welcome the opportunity of serving a large community and participating in a unique and challenging field and I hope to work with such hardworking and remarkable faculty members with outstanding professional experience in Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA. My imaginations expressively paint the complex details involved in Medicine which spurs me to carry out my undergraduate project titled ‘Hepatitis A virus incidence and coagulation studies in a riverine community infected with Schistosoma Hematobium’ and the observations detail the positive response and compromise of the human body to an invader which was quiet revealing. In addition, I have also carried out two other research work which include; Effect of inhalation of yam flower dust on hematological and coagulation parameters among Yam flower grinders in Osun state and Alpha fetoprotein estimation in immunocompromised individuals in Osun state in which the complicated mechanisms involved presented an existing course of event filled with plenty of mysteries which I hope to decipher at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA. I have attended various seminars and training on the effective use of statistical tools and equipped myself with vital information on public health from LabMedica and different online publications such as Lions in Winters by Mat Edelson that documented explicitly the combined 90-plus years work of Brad and David Sack on the front lines of the cholera war and systems thinking by Maryalice Yakutchik among others. All these activities have confirmed my growing interest in preventive medicine, affordable, quality and effective healthcare.

To strengthen my knowledge in Medicine, I volunteered as a member of Blood Drive Initiative; a Non-governmental organization saddled with the responsibility of recruiting voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors to provide safe and sustainable blood supply to meet the rising blood need of Nigeria which interestingly gave me a clear picture of the immune response towards Transfusion Transmissible Infections (TTIs). The volunteering service of distributing mosquito nets and repellant in Ika North-East Local Government Area, Delta state as part of my community development project during my National Youth Corps Service year has had a remarkable effect in reducing malaria in pregnancy and the overall malaria incidence in the area which is a tangible success from these humble effort.

Moreover, I hope to gain admission for my Masters in your prestigious institution and dream of becoming an established Public health researcher and scientist with the aim of contributing immensely in the education, diagnosis, management and treatment of disease of economic importance especially in Nigeria. Also being a Graduate Member of the Nigeria Institute of Management, I hope to promote a selfless service, service above self and to contribute to strategic transformation in my country through universal best practices, corporate governance standards and distinctive individual disciplines which being a postgraduate student at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA will further help inculcate.

I was actively involved in student politics at the undergraduate level which has made a compelling impact in my development and growth as an individual offering the necessary exposure to interact with different people of vast opinion, improve my communication skills, team working skills and leadership ability. Among the remarkable impact of my leadership qualities was the role I played as the Chief Justice of the Nigeria Medical Laboratory Science Student Association, LAUTECH Chapter in educating the association members on their fundamental human right as a citizen of the country and financial member of the association through partnership with a Legal Non-governmental organization (NGO) and setting up of a group of competent individuals tagged members of the Nigeria Medical Laboratory Science Student Bar Association (NBA) to promote an advocacy program for the association members.

I have been charged with enthusiasm and eagerness about the intriguing prospect of experiencing life in the United State of America with the many historical site and tourist attractions scattered all over the various cities. The dynamic weather condition of the United State of America is also worth the strong feeling as the country is profoundly called the ‘Country of Four seasons’ as against the two seasons being experienced here in Nigeria namely the harmathan and rainy season. The emphasis on all-inclusiveness and equal opportunities to all irrespective of nationalities, race and gender has also motivated me in sending my application coupled with the professional training and research oriented programs of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA which has convinced me where my career pursuit lies.

I am aware of the competitive nature of the program and the large applicants, but I am convinced that my good academic record at the University undergraduate level and professional experience coupled with my strong motivation and enthusiasm that have manifested over the years in life science will give me a strong recommendation for a place at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA.

I am really looking forward to the consideration and acceptance of my application. Thank you.

How to Write a Strong Personal Statement for Graduate School

  • by Heidi Kerr and Paul David Terry
  • November 10, 2020

A student sits on his laptop at the Silo at UC Davis.

You’ve made the exciting decision to pursue a graduate degree. Congratulations! There are a wide range of graduate programs to explore , and once you’ve selected the right program for you, it’s time to begin the graduate application process.

The statement of purpose and personal history statement are key components of the UC Davis graduate school application . With fewer than 4,000 characters allowed for each essay, these statements can seem particularly daunting. However, each one has a specific purpose for showcasing your academic journey and creating a holistic application.

Below, we’ve analyzed the differences between the statement of purpose and personal history statement and provided tips for writing these graduate school admissions essays.

Statement of Purpose and Personal History: What’s the Difference?

A student examines chemicals through a beaker while wearing a lab coat and goggles.

The statement of purpose shares your academic objectives with the admissions committee and explains why you want to obtain a graduate degree. The personal history statement provides background about who you are and how your experiences have shaped your interests and ability to overcome challenges. Each essay has specific goals to showcase your experience, passion and story.

How to Write a Strong Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose should highlight your academic preparation , motivation and interests, along with any specializations and career goals that contribute to your program of study. As you write your statement of purpose, it should encompass some of the following:

  • Academic and research experiences - Include any relevant academic studies or research pursuits, internships or employment, presentations, publications, teaching, and travel or study abroad experiences that prepare you for this graduate program. Explain your motivation or passion for these experiences and how they can enrich your graduate study.
  • Interests, specializations, and career goals - Highlight your research interests, disciplinary subfields, area(s) of specialization, and professional objectives.
  • Fit - Explain how your preparation, experiences, and interests match the specific resources and characteristics of your graduate program at UC Davis. Identify specific faculty within your desired graduate program with whom you would like to work and how their interests match your own.

The statement of purpose should also address why you want to pursue the particular graduate degree program at the university and what your goals are in pursuing a degree. Remember, the statement of purpose should explain exactly that, your purpose for becoming a graduate student. This is the primary way it stands apart from your personal history statement.

What to Include in Your Personal History Statement

A student smiles as she inspects yellow liquid underneath a microscope, while her professor watches on.

The personal history statement helps the reader learn more about you as an individual and potential graduate student. Use this opportunity to describe how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Tell a story that  includes any experiences, challenges or opportunities relevant to your academic journey. Consider how your life experiences contribute to the social, intellectual, or cultural diversity within a campus community and your chosen field.

A strong personal history statement begins with an authentic voice and personal narrative. This can reflect your journey to graduate school, any obstacles you’ve encountered, and how you've overcome challenges. Talk about your personal goals and dreams. Explain what motivates and drives you toward this degree. The more your personal statement tells your school about you as an individual, the more it will stand out. Don't write something to impress someone else. This includes language, style and tone. Authenticity is important and resonates well. Tell the truth, in your voice, from your perspective. Use your story to connect.

Environment science and sustainability personal statement example.

Rapid urbanisation has transfigured India into a nation of avid consumers, culminating a society exerting a relentless call for resources and causing untold environmental strain.

The poor recycling ethos has forged monumental waste mountains as seen in Ghazipur, Delhi. I visited the site on a family holiday after corresponding with and subsequently devoting two weeks to working with the charity Chintan to manage waste and ensure sustainable consumption. Real experience of an issue of this magnitude proved invaluable, it elucidated the social responsibilities we have to the earth and exhibited the ramifications of our actions thus far.

Previous study at Level 3 was rich in the impartation of skills and led to proficiency in both teamwork and individual endeavours, the creation of high quality work within the designated deadlines in addition to the capacity to lead, direct and supervise a group of people by means of the role I undertook as a team leader in ‘Organising a business event.’ This consolidated a vast amalgamation of technique including expertise in the generation of formal reports as well as aural presentations. Dedication and a positive work ethic induced its resultant success; this is echoed within the grades I achieved.

The attainment of corporate sustainability is vital. The question of acquisition was posed to myself and a colleague during my occupational role as a team member. To develop the company’s current eco-policy, to devise a ‘green strategy’ that factored in the company’s operations in regards to the social and economic environment. This scintillated me. Being selected to spearhead this enterprise validated the immense trust invested in me at being afforded such responsibility.

National Geographic and The Ecologist consume my reading, through this I protracted my understanding of the issues we are facing. It is through these disquietudes being exposed that I am encouraged to work alongside The National Trust. By virtue of my possessing a keen absorption in the branch of study which is air quality and the pollution pandemic, I was inspired to take part in a survey which sought to calculate the variations in environmental conditions that the influx of Nitrogen Dioxide and Ammonia have created, utilising the changing physicality of Lichen Trees as a bio indicator.

This endeavour into field work accorded an opportunity for me to investigate a pressing environmental concern, one which carries detrimental effects to vegetation and human health. The array of processes I carried out included: analysing the data, deducing the concentration of the gases and thereafter conceiving and methodically preparing a proposition for a local solution. This was latterly presented to a team of peers which serves to corroborate that I am accomplished in adopting methods of analysis, formulating conclusions and articulately delivering my findings.

This is what I seek to emphasise through my career, the duty we have to act upon the expertise we have acquired. A sustainable way of life must emerge; the earth is maimed by afflictions such as climate change, retreating glaciers and ocean acidification. Progression must serve to ameliorate the ruins and achieve equilibrium.

Hence making my course selection of environmental issues and the socio-political impacts inevitable, it enables me to commit my time to, as well as further my knowledge of that which is of the utmost importance to me. Attending lectures in this subject area at the University of Birmingham has allowed me valuable insight into the wealth of knowledge I will glean from higher education. Managing my spare time proactively to allow me to do this validates my yearning and commitment to study this subject, as well as reaffirming my passion beyond doubt.

The prospect of being part of a community with shared enthusiasm enthrals me. As does equally, the chance to work with specialists who possess the knowledge and resources to enable me to reach my potential and truly flourish.

Sample Personal Statement Environment and Sustainability

“Scientists study the world as it is; engineers create a world that has never been.” Theodore Von Karman

This quote from Karman sums it up for me as I belong to a family of Civil Engineers. I had grown up watching buildings being constructed, concrete pouring, and the vast green land converted to grey structures – even my beloved football ground. Slowly I realized that the areas that reflected soothing greenery and captivating designs are now tarnished with unfettered traffic and illegal encroachments. Dingy streets, ill planning, and neglected construction make it hard for outsiders to locate a place. As these areas grew more populated and congested, I experienced soaring temperatures at an alarmingly increased rate. Even without any technical knowledge, I can see that lack of planning in construction is putting pressure on our resources.

My four years in civil engineering opened a whole new world to me, just as exciting as I had imagined. One of my favorite courses was related to “Environmental Engineering.” Through this course, I developed an essential skillset in evaluating construction designs in the local context of Dubai. It made me realize that energy, climate, and infrastructure systems are closely tied together, and these connections manifest in various forms. Our society cannot function without energy and infrastructure systems. Since then, I have used every opportunity to upsurge my knowledge of Sustainable Designs further and spread awareness about intelligent designs.

I joined ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers) and held the president’s office. As a president, I worked actively to spread awareness about resource constraints and why eco-friendly construction designs are the need of the day. In addition, I arranged policy dialogues where students presented their innovative green approaches toward infrastructure design to pioneers in the construction industry.

During one such conversation, my idea of researching Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) caught the attention of Martin Brudermüller, Director of BASF SE. He encouraged me to explore more on this in the shape of a thesis. Working on this thesis was an eye-opener for me.

I found out that CFRP is a highly costly material that is inefficiently used in current construction practices. This material is wrapped around the whole column to raise the strength of the structure. After intensive research, I discovered we could achieve the same power by wrapping the columns with only 20% of the CFRP from the top. This was groundbreaking research as I found an innovative way of reducing construction costs. After graduation, I looked for careers where I could apply my research findings in practical settings.

Thankfully, I found a perfect match in Jacobs Solutions, an American international technical professional services firm. Jacobs Solutions envisions changing redundant practices of construction. At Jacobs, I have worked as Assistant Engineer for eight months. Working at Jacobs, I came in close contact with foreign consultants better grounded in applying the latest construction materials than civil engineers. Interacting with these consultants regularly, I realized that my skill set in sustainable and eco-friendly design is rudimentary. For example, during the Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center construction, renewable energy and materials have been incorporated to reduce the overall carbon footprint and make the project green and sustainable.

However, I must admit that these consultants are highly paid, which increases the indirect cost of these projects because we lack skilled professionals in sustainable engineering. Realizing the current gaps in the industry and the potential of eco-friendly materials, I want to pursue a master’s degree in Sustainable Engineering. This is a popular area of specialization since we live in a world with limited natural resources. The importance of Sustainable Engineering cannot be overstated because our green spaces are being converted to grey structures. Pursuing a Master’s degree in sustainable engineering, I want to reverse the order. I want to design efficient structures with eco-friendly materials, so my children see grey structures turning green. I am confident that a Master’s degree in Sustainable engineering will go a long way in fulfilling my dreams and aspirations.
