Selecting a research paper topic that is meaningful, interesting, and fascinates you is an excellent first step toward creating an engaging paper that people will want to read.

Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is technically part of the introduction—generally the last sentence of it—but is so important that it merits a section of its own. The thesis statement is a declarative sentence that tells the reader what the paper is about. A strong thesis statement serves three purposes: present the topic of the paper, deliver a clear opinion on the topic, and summarize the points the paper will cover.

The reference page is normally found at the end of a research paper. It provides proof that you did research using credible sources, properly credits the originators of information, and prevents plagiarism.

Not all research paper topics are created equal, and you want to make sure you choose a great topic before you start writing. Below are the three most important factors to consider to make sure you choose the best research paper topics.

#1: It's Something You're Interested In

A paper is always easier to write if you're interested in the topic, and you'll be more motivated to do in-depth research and write a paper that really covers the entire subject. Even if a certain research paper topic is getting a lot of buzz right now or other people seem interested in writing about it, don't feel tempted to make it your topic unless you genuinely have some sort of interest in it as well.

#2: There's Enough Information to Write a Paper

Even if you come up with the absolute best research paper topic and you're so excited to write about it, you won't be able to produce a good paper if there isn't enough research about the topic. This can happen for very specific or specialized topics, as well as topics that are too new to have enough research done on them at the moment. Easy research paper topics will always be topics with enough information to write a full-length paper.

Trying to write a research paper on a topic that doesn't have much research on it is incredibly hard, so before you decide on a topic, do a bit of preliminary searching and make sure you'll have all the information you need to write your paper.

#3: It Fits Your Teacher's Guidelines

Don't get so carried away looking at lists of research paper topics that you forget any requirements or restrictions your teacher may have put on research topic ideas. If you're writing a research paper on a health-related topic, deciding to write about the impact of rap on the music scene probably won't be allowed, but there may be some sort of leeway. For example, if you're really interested in current events but your teacher wants you to write a research paper on a history topic, you may be able to choose a topic that fits both categories, like exploring the relationship between the US and North Korea. How to Write a Great Research Paper

Even great research paper topics won't give you a great research paper if you don't hone your topic before and during the writing process. Follow these three tips to turn good research paper topics into great papers.

#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early

Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!

As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."

If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."

#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research

Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.

#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing

You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!

Get most of your research on your good research topics done before you begin writing. Then use the research you've collected to create a rough outline of what your paper will cover and the key points you're going to make. This will help keep your paper clear and organized, and it'll ensure you have enough research to produce a strong paper.

Come Up with Cool Research Topics! 9th Grade ELA Research Papers to Wow Your Teachers!

Help! I Have a Paper Due and I Don’t Know Where to Start!

First, please take a moment to breathe. Got it? All right, now you need to understand that there are some really cool research topics for your 9th grade ELA research paper. You’ve probably been reading a novel in class, and you’ve been assigned to write a paper about that novel using a thesis statement.

Before we launch into discussing some of the cool research topics, let us first review the thesis statement in the way I learned it when I was preparing to write a paper back when I was in high school. While this is a little different from the way others teach you to write your statement, it helps you to focus your idea, and come up with a basic outline for the paper. There are two “A’s” and three “B’s.”

  • Although - When you use ‘although,’ you’re saying that you disagree with a commonly held belief about what you’re going to discuss. You might have a phrase that begins: “Although Sophia left home to go to the store,”
  • Actually - When you use the term ‘actually,’ you are putting forth your argument. The purpose of writing a research paper is to demonstrate not only that you can gather research together on a topic, but also that you can organize your thoughts about it, and analyze the thoughts and arguments others have put forward. Your actually phrase might be “…she had lied about where she was going and wound up in the wrong area…”
  • Because, Because, Because - You’ll want to have at least three reasons you believe your thesis statement to be correct. All good arguments are backed up with evidence. For example “…because she wanted to see her boyfriend, because she got lost on the way there, and because there was a gang fight happening at the time.

Now, you won’t use all of this in your official thesis statement, but it will help you to narrow down your topic focus, and figure out what sorts of research materials you will require in your 9th grade ELA research paper. Your actual thesis statement will consist of a single sentence that will cover what the reader would expect to find in your paper.

Choosing Cool Research Topics

Finding your research topic doesn’t have to be hard, after all, most research papers are based on books you have read during the course of the year. For example, a popular 9th grade book is Earnest Hemingway&rsquo;s <em>Old Man and the Sea</em> and one of the themes of this book is excessive pride . If you’ve been told to complete a research project, you have a few options:

  • You could compare the book you read for class to another book written by the same author. In order to narrow down your research topic, you’ll want to choose one theme from the book.
  • You can compare the book you read for class to other books. For example, if you were working with the theme of pride from Old Man and the Sea , you could compare how Hemingway depicts this theme in his book, to how other authors depict the theme in their books.
  • You could debunk commonly held beliefs about the book you were assigned for class. For example, in another commonly assigned 9th grade book, Shakespeare&rsquo;s play <em>Romeo and Juliet</em>, many often argue that romance is one of the main themes . If you disagree, you could write a paper showing how class is the real theme of the piece.
  • Depending upon your instructor and the specifications for your assignment, you might want to write a follow-up piece to the work. What happens next? Why do you believe that? What evidence is there in the text that you might be able to expect that?

Creative Ideas for Presenting Your Research

Depending on your English instructor, you may find yourself able to get creative when presenting your research paper for a grade. You will want to check with your teacher to be sure that any of the following are permissible, but if they are, it can be a great way to put together your research (and can be a lot of fun).

  • Create a newspaper covering the topics and related topics from the book. For example, If you read Les Miserables for your English class, then you can create a mock-up of a newspaper you might have found during the French Revolution.
  • Put together a diorama. If you read, for example, The Hobbit , then putting together a diorama of one of the key scenes of the book and writing an explanation of why it is one of the key scenes can be a great project.
  • Briefly retell the story from another perspective. If The Color Purple was the book assigned to your class, how would the story be different if told from the viewpoint of Nettie? How would it be different if Albert told the story? Why are these differences important, what do they show about the themes of the story?
  • If your research paper involves focusing on character development through the story, create a timeline of events for the character. Include items on the timeline that happened before the piece began, and then speculate about what might happen after the piece ends.

Writing a research paper for your 9th grade English class does not have to be a drag. Have fun with your project. Don’t limit yourself to the obvious when it comes to putting together a presentation of your research material.

More Ideas That Rock

As if you didn’t have enough ideas for your research papers in the previous sections, here are a few more ways that you can explore the books most commonly assigned in 9th grade English classes.

  • <em>To Kill a Mockingbird</em> by Harper Lee - If you’ve been given an assignment to do a research project for this book, there are many different topics to touch on–prejudice is one topic. Perhaps you can investigate other works where prejudice was a key theme. Alternatively, you can show ways in which the themes discussed in Lee’s work are applicable today. Are there any contemporary court cases where race or prejudice are a factor?
  • <em>Lord of the Flies</em> by William Golding - Lord of the Flies deals with the nature of human nature. Without law and order, would chaos rein? Are there any thinkers who believe this? What do you think human nature is? Research the thoughts of others and compare their theories with Golding’s depictions in this story.
  • <em>Animal Farm</em> by George Orwell - This short novel deals with the question of whether revolution really makes any progress. Do a little background research on the time in which Orwell wrote this book. Do you believe that revolution made things better or worse for those involved? Do you agree that if a revolution occurs that things will eventually become corrupt again? Why or why not?
  • Our Town by Thornton Wilder - This play deals with themes including what it means to live a good life and the nature of community and its imperfections. In what ways does the story show how to live a good life? Is there anything that you could do now to appreciate life more? Are there other works out there with this theme?

A Final Note

While you’re reading any text, for school or for fun, get into the practice of coming up with cool research topics. 9th grade ELA research papers are a given part of your freshman year in high school. By keeping a running tab of research ideas, you’ll train your mind to be open to ideas when they hit and you’ll have a list of ideas ready for that paper when its assigned.

Ninth grade is the first year of high school, so freshmen might find themselves competing against older students in a science fair. Even so, they stand every bit as good a chance of excelling and winning. The key to success is choosing an interesting project that doesn't necessarily take a lot of time to complete.

Gearing a Project to the 9th Grade Level

Ninth graders have a lot going on, so it's best to choose a project idea that can be developed and completed over the space of a few weeks or less. Since high school students are expected to be familiar with word processing programs and printers, the quality of the presentation is very important. 

Are you making a poster? Be sure to make it as professional as possible. Also, remember that accurately citing sources is critical to any successful project. Always cite any references used in developing your experiment.

9th Grade Science Fair Project Ideas

  • Teeth whiteners : Find the shade of white that matches your teeth. Brush your teeth using a teeth-whitening toothpaste or gum. What color are your teeth now? To obtain additional data, have other family members test different products and monitor their results.
  • Seed germination: Can you affect or improve the germination rate of seeds by pre-rinsing them in a chemical before planting them? Examples of chemicals to try include hydrogen peroxide solution , diluted hydrochloric acid solution, diluted isopropyl alcohol solution , and fruit juice. Some of these agents are thought to be able to loosen the seed coat surrounding the plant embryo.
  • Hair conditioner: Using a microscope, determine whether hair conditioner affects the condition of hair (either comparing brands or comparing with conditioner to without-conditioner). The goal is to get empirical data, such as a diameter measurement of each hair strand and the distance a strand can stretch before it breaks.
  • Bread shelf-life: What's the best way to store bread to keep it fresh for the longest time?
  • Optimizing appliance efficiency: What things can you do to improve the efficiency or effectiveness of your clothes dryer or water heater—or any device? For example, are there any actions you can take or changes you can make that will decrease the length of time it takes for your dryer to dry a load of towels?
  • Music and memory: Does listening to music while you study affect your ability to memorize facts?
  • Smoke and plant transpiration: Does the presence of smoke in the air affect plant transpiration?
  • The impact of eye color on peripheral vision : Does eye color affect peripheral vision? Supposedly, people with darker eyes tend to have wider pupils for a given amount of light than people with light-colored irises. If you have a more open pupil, does it give you measurably better peripheral vision? Another idea to test would be to see if you have the same peripheral vision in bright light as compared with dim light.
  • Acid snow? Most of us have heard about acid rain, but do you know the pH range of snow? If you live in an area with snow, test its pH. How does the pH of snow compare with the pH of rain from the same region?
  • Soil erosion: What methods of preventing soil erosion work best? For example, what is effective at preventing erosion in your yard?
  • Localized noise reduction: What can you do to reduce noise pollution in a room? What factors contribute to noise pollution inside a residence?
  • Seed viability: Is there a test you can perform to predict whether or not a seed will germinate? What factors can you measure that might be used to construct a test?
  • The effects of magnets on insects and brine shrimp: Does an external magnetic field have any noticeable effect on animals such as brine shrimp, cockroaches, or fruit flies? You could use a strip magnet and containers of sample organisms and make observations to address this question.
  • How is phosphorescence affected by light? Is the brightness of glow-in-the-dark (phosphorescent) materials affected by the light source (spectrum) used to make them glow or only by the intensity (brightness) of the light? Does the light source affect the length of time a phosphorescent material will glow?
  • How do preservatives impact Vitamin C? Can you affect vitamin C (or another measurable vitamin) levels in juice (or another food) by adding a preservative to the juice?
  • Insulation variables : What is the best thickness of insulation for preventing heat loss?
  • How does energy input impact light bulb lifespan? Is light bulb lifespan affected by whether the bulb is run at full power? In other words, do dim bulbs last longer/shorter than bulbs run at their power rating?
  • Speaker acoustics: What type of box material gives you the best sound for your speaker?
  • How does temperature affect battery life? When comparing different brands of batteries: Is the brand that lasts the longest at a high temperature the same as that brand lasts the longest at a cold temperature?

Generative AI has entered the classroom, poised to profoundly impact both teaching and learning. As educators navigate this digital shift, they’re pioneering the use of emerging tools and resources. Sarah Kiyak, a teacher at Alexandria High School in Virginia, recently piloted JSTOR’s GenAI-powered research tool (currently in beta) in her Dual Enrollment (DE) Composition class. Beyond helping students find and assess sources, JSTOR’s tool empowers teachers to create a more engaging and effective learning experience for their students. In this blog post, learn how Kiyak used JSTOR’s AI tool to deepen student engagement, instill crucial research skills, and streamline her own workflows.

JSTOR’s GenAI comes to AP history

After being introduced to JSTOR’s AI research tool in December 2023, Kiyak saw immediate potential for its use in the classroom. Because its core capabilities—providing a summary of an article, suggesting related topics and content, and answering questions about a text—are designed to make evaluation of sources more efficient, Kiyak chose to introduce it to her DE scholars, who were about to begin work on a 12-page research paper. Like she’d done many times before, she first (re)introduced her students to JSTOR and the platform’s features. But this time she had a surprise for them. 

“When I shared how we had special access to GenAI, the students hooted and hollered!”

Just how it will be adopted in the classroom is a fast-moving subject, with a fair amount of debate. While some teachers have expressed concern about bringing GenAI into the classroom, Kiyak is clear about her stance. “I think it is vital that we teachers model healthy ways to utilize advanced technology. We are using AI as a resource, not a way to cheat the system. I demonstrate how to use AI for good, not evil.” 

Making research efficient and accessible 

Novice researchers who are just developing their skills find it daunting to write long research papers with many citations. Sifting through dozens of articles trying to find the ones most relevant to the topic can be challenging, even for expert researchers. With GenAI, research that used to feel like looking for a needle in a haystack has been simplified.

To introduce the tool to her class, Kiyak said, “I projected my Boolean searches onto my smart screen, chose some articles, and showed students how Gen AI provides a concise summary of each article.” Via the summary, students could rapidly assess the relevance of the article, seeing if it incorporated their keywords. They could also ask the tool directly what the article says about a certain word or phrase. 

It immediately empowered her students’ research.

“Gen AI, again, helped us understand the scope of the research articles and if they were pertinent to each student’s topic.”

“[Three students] then wanted to shift into [researching] Obama’s administration and the rise of the Tea Party in the 2000s. With this specific historical shift, the Gen AI helped the students hone in on exactly what they needed in their resources. Early in their research, if the AI summary didn’t incorporate any of these keywords (Civil Rights, Southern Democrats, Obama, Tea Party), then they knew they needed a different source.”

Academic articles can be written in infamously inaccessible language, and when students struggle to identify what is relevant they often spend time reading articles that aren’t, only to realize later that they’d wasted their time.“Gen AI, again, helped us understand the scope of the research articles and if they were pertinent to each student’s topic.” Wasting time is frustrating, and for novice researchers, that frustration can stifle the intrigue and curiosity that fuel the pursuit of knowledge. 

GenAI lowers the barrier to entry without performing the intellectual work. This frees up bandwidth so that it can be used to enhance understanding of the material and make connections with other texts. The AI-powered summary of the text can even deepen students’ comprehension, giving them a framework for what they are reading, just as knowing the plot before reading Shakespeare can make his plays more intelligible. The AI-generated responses use only the text at hand to generate responses, which minimizes hallucinations and misinformation. To ensure credibility, it displays text excerpts and provides citations via direct links to the relevant part of the text.

GenAI as a teaching assistant

Teaching research skills to a large group of diverse learners can also prove challenging and time consuming. While one-on-one sessions can be designed to suit each student’s needs, they are resource intensive. “ Gen AI helped me work more quickly with my students during our one-on-one conferences,” Kiyak explained. “I could find sources and then easily verify if the research focused on the students’ topics. Gen AI truly helped me with my own time management in the classroom.”

Teachers everywhere have noticed a decline in student engagement. By eliminating the more tedious part of research and getting right to the intellectual stimulation, teachers have a better chance of keeping students’ attention. So far, users of the GenAI beta tool are staying on the platform twice as long, showing evidence of its incredible promise to boost engagement.

Psychology professor takes students to conference in s.f., thanks to donation, fundraising, may 16, 2024.

Sometimes it takes a trip outside the classroom to enlighten students and make them aware of career possibilities and motivate them in their chosen field.

For Western Nevada College Professor Psychology Dr. Rebecca Bevans and six of her students, a field trip to San Francisco during the end of spring semester accomplished this purpose.

They attended the four-day   Western Psychological Association Convention, learning that scientific research isn’t so boring after all and there are topics and issues that can shape their course of study in the future.

“They were all bitten by the research bug and I could not be happier,” Dr. Bevans said. “Do you know how hard it is to get students interested in research? Let's just say that research is not exciting to everyone. But now I have a team of researchers, and we will be working out our plans this summer, and conducting some research this coming fall.”

The educational trip was made possible because of the WNC Psychology Club’s fundraising efforts which were matched by a generous WNC Foundation donor.

Dr. Bevans first attended the conference as a graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno, but her obligation as a presenter kept her from enjoying the full experience of the conference.

“As a professor, I knew that taking some of our students to a conference could be life-changing,” she said. “Every time I attend the Western Psychological Association conference, I am left with a head full of the newest research in psychology. It is an amazing experience and one that I knew would be life changing for some of our students who are just beginning their journey into psychology.”

For the half-dozen students who accompanied Dr. Bevans and instructor Jolene Coverston to San Francisco, it was an opportunity to see what the psychology field has to offer them in the future.

“To me, one of the most important things that I learned was how vast the world of psychology truly is,” psychology student Thomas Shumway said. “Getting to learn the specific details of how research works in many of those varying parts of psychology was very informative for me and was just incredibly interesting.”

Added student Will Webster, “During this trip, I got to learn about positive psychology, consenting non-monogamous relationships, the retold story about the Stanford prison experiment, and many more. All the speakers went into pretty great detail of all their studies and experiments. While Mrs. Bevans was extremely helpful in explaining any parts that confused me.”

Shumway and Webster shared these experiences with other conference attendees from WNC, including students Yamaa Daoudi, Michael Marketti, Lilly Bacon and Angel Polvorosa.

“That experience of bonding with people who are equally and even more passionate about psychology was so refreshing to me,” Shumway said. “Listening and talking to people who are passionate about similar topics to me helped me understand topics I couldn't quite wrap my head around before; it also challenged me quite a bit.”

Webster said that their professor’s presence provided them with a better understanding of the conference, including the studies and experiments.

“It was amazing; I loved the experience the entire time,” Webster said. ‘Having Dr. Bevans there, being able to explain the confusing parts, and to be able to learn more from people who share the same passion will be an experience I will never forget. You could really tell that Dr. Bevans was taking the time to explain studies, experiments and other psychology related material along the way.”

Their interest and views about research changed 180 degrees during the conference.

“All of us became interested in research because we were given the chance to meet the people behind said research,” Shumway said. “Meeting them helped us put research into a new perspective I think, and to me at least, that new perspective made me much more intrigued by the research topics we had discussed.”

The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation  announced that it has awarded fellowships to 10 PhD students with ties to MIT. The prestigious award provides each recipient with five years of doctoral-level research funding (up to a total of $250,000), which allows them the flexibility and autonomy to pursue their own innovative ideas.

Fellows also receive lifelong access to Hertz Foundation programs, such as events, mentoring, and networking. They join the ranks of over 1,300 former Hertz Fellows who are leaders and scholars in a range of fields in science, engineering, and technology. Connections among fellows over the years have sparked collaborations in startups, research, and technology commercialization.

The 10 MIT recipients are among a total of 18 Hertz Foundation Fellows scholars selected this year from across the country. Five of them received their undergraduate degrees at the Institute and will pursue their PhDs at other schools. Two are current MIT graduate students, and four will begin their studies here in the fall.

“For more than 60 years, Hertz Fellows have led scientific and technical innovation in national security, applied biological sciences, materials research, artificial intelligence, space exploration, and more. Their contributions have been essential in advancing U.S. competitiveness,” says Stephen Fantone, chair of the Hertz Foundation board of directors and founder and president of Optikos Corp. “I’m excited to watch our newest Hertz Fellows as they pursue challenging research and continue the strong tradition of applying their work for the greater good.”

Owen Dugan ’24 graduated from MIT in just two-and-a-half years with a degree in physics, and he plans to pursue a PhD in computer science at Stanford University. His research interests lie at the intersection of AI and physics. As an undergraduate, he conducted research in a broad range of areas, including using physics concepts to enhance the speed of large language models and developing machine learning algorithms that automatically discover scientific theories. He was recognized with MIT’s Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award and is a U.S. Presidential Scholar, a Neo Scholar, and a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. Dugan holds multiple patents, co-developed an app to reduce food waste, and co-founded a startup that builds tools to verify the authenticity of digital images.

Kaylie Hausknecht will begin her physics doctorate at MIT in the fall, having completing her undergraduate degree in physics and astrophysics at Harvard University. While there, her undergraduate research focused on developing new machine learning techniques to solve problems in a range of fields, such as fluid dynamics, astrophysics, and condensed matter physics. She received the Hoopes Prize for her senior thesis, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa as a junior, and won two major writing awards. In addition, she completed five NASA internships. As an intern, she helped identify 301 new exoplanets using archival data from the Kepler Space Telescope. Hausknecht served as the co-president of Harvard’s chapter of Science Club for Girls, which works to encourage girls from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue STEM.

Elijah Lew-Smith majored in physics at Brown University and plans to pursue a doctoral degree in physics at MIT. He is a theoretical physicist with broad intellectual interests in effective field theory (EFT), which is the study of systems with many interacting degrees of freedom. EFT reveals how to extract the relevant, long-distance behavior from complicated microscopic rules. In 2023, he received a national award to work on applying EFT systematically to non-equilibrium and active systems such as fluctuating hydrodynamics or flocking birds. In addition, Lew-Smith received a scholarship from the U.S. State Department to live for a year in Dakar, Senegal, and later studied at ’École Polytechnique in Paris, France.

Rupert Li ’24 earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at MIT in mathematics as well as computer science, data science, and economics, with a minor in business analytics.He was named a 2024 Marshall Scholar and will study abroad for a year at Cambridge University before matriculating at Stanford University for a mathematics doctorate. As an undergraduate, Li authored 12 math research articles, primarily in combinatorics, but also including discrete geometry, probability, and harmonic analysis. He was recognized for his work with a Barry Goldwater Scholarship and an honorable mention for the Morgan Prize, one of the highest undergraduate honors in mathematics.

Amani Maina-Kilaas is a first-year doctoral student at MIT in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, where he studies computational psycholinguistics. In particular, he is interested in using artificial intelligence as a scientific tool to study how the mind works, and using what we know about the mind to develop more cognitively realistic models. Maina-Kilaas earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics from Harvey Mudd College. There, he conducted research regarding intention perception and theoretical machine learning, earning the Astronaut Scholarship and Computing Research Association’s Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award.

Zoë Marschner ’23 is a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University working on geometry processing, a subfield of computer graphics focused on how to represent and work with geometric data digitally; in her research, she aims to make these representations capable of enabling fundamentally better algorithms for solving geometric problems across science and engineering. As an undergraduate at MIT, she earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and math and pursued research in geometry processing, including repairing hexahedral meshes and detecting intersections between high-order surfaces. She also interned at Walt Disney Animation Studios, where she worked on collision detection algorithms for simulation. Marschner is a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship and the Goldwater Scholarship.

Zijian (William) Niu will start a doctoral program in computational and systems biology at MIT in the fall. He has a particular interest in developing new methods for imaging proteins and other biomolecules in their native cellular environments and using those data to build computational models for predicting their dynamics and molecular interactions. Niu received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, biophysics, and physics from the University of Pennsylvania. His undergraduate research involved developing novel computational methods for biological image analysis. He was awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for creating a deep-learning algorithm for accurately detecting tiny diffraction-limited spots in fluorescence microscopy images that outperformed existing methods in quantifying spatial transcriptomics data.

James Roney received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Harvard University in computer science and statistics, respectively. He is currently working as a machine learning research engineer at D.E. Shaw Research. His past research has focused on interpreting the internal workings of AlphaFold and modeling cancer evolution. Roney plans to pursue a PhD in computational biology at MIT, with a specific interest in developing computational models of protein structure, function, and evolution and using those models to engineer novel proteins for applications in biotechnology.

Anna Sappington ’19 is a student in the Harvard University-MIT MD-PhD Program, currently in the first year of her doctoral program at MIT in electrical engineering and computer science. She is interested in building methods to predict evolutionary events, especially connections among machine learning, biology, and chemistry to develop reinforcement learning models inspired by evolutionary biology. Sappington graduated from MIT with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and molecular biology. As an undergraduate, she was awarded a 2018 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and selected as a Burchard Scholar and an Amgen Scholar. After graduating, she earned a master’s degree in genomic medicine from the University of Cambridge, where she studied as a Marshall Scholar, as well as a master’s degree in machine learning from University College London.

Jason Yang ’22  received his bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in computer science from MIT and is currently a doctoral student in genetics at Stanford University. He is interested in understanding the biological processes that underlie human health and disease. At MIT, and subsequently at Massachusetts General Hospital, Yang worked on the mechanisms involved in neurodegeneration in repeat expansion diseases, uncovering a novel molecular consequence of repeat protein aggregation.
