BTS poses for a portrait during the 2017 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theatre.

The seven BTS members are (back row from left to right) V, Suga, Jin, RM, J-Hope, (front row from left to right) Jungkook and Jimin

They've been number one on iTunes in over 91 countries and regions with their latest album Map Of The Soul: 7, have got over 26 million subscribers on YouTube and are the first K-pop band EVER to top the US album charts.

It's fair to say, BTS is the K-pop band that is taking over the world.

Who are BTS?

BTS are a K-pop (or Korean pop) group made up of seven members - Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook - who come from all over South Korea.

They launched in 2013 and have since rocketed to global stardom.

Over the years, the group have produced material around various themes starting with the 'School' trilogy.

This was followed by the 'Most Beautiful Moment in Life', 'Wings', and most recently, the 'Love Yourself' series.

Their album 'Love Yourself: Answer' stormed to the top of the US charts, which saw South Korean President Moon Jae-in taking to Twitter to congratulate the boys on their success.

BTS is the biggest K-pop group internationally - and it doesn't look like they're stopping any time soon.

Why are BTS so successful?

There are four reasons that BTS have become as popular as they have.

1. The music

BTS performing in 2013.

The group launched in 2013 and have since become global superstars

With K-pop growing in popularity, they're simply making the music that people want to listen to!

According to Billboard, their album 'Love Yourself: Tear', which is sung in Korean, became "the first primarily foreign-language No 1 album in over 12 years."

Not only that, but many people say that the subject of their music has played a part in their success.

While many K-pop songs are about relationships and love, BTS cover subjects that other bands may not like bullying, elitism and mental health.

2. Their performance

BTS in their music video for the single Idol.

BTS have racked up millions of views for their amazing performances

There's no point having amazing songs if you can't sell them to the world - and BTS have got this down to a fine art.

With their slick dance routines and extremely impressive music videos, they've attracted a loyal group of fans who have fallen in love with their music even more.

Mr Son, the band's choreographer, explains: "Music videos seem to be one of the most important factors. Messages from an artist can be delivered more effectively."

To polish their performances, BTS practice for hours. For their debut performance, they were working at it for 12 to 15 hours a day to get it right. Well, it certainly paid off!

3. The internet

BTS after their win.

BTS became the first K-pop group to win a US Billboard music award

The internet - and in particular social media - has played an enormous part in the success of the group.

Suga told BBC Radio 1: "I think we're so lucky to be born at the right time. Without social media, we wouldn't have been so successful."

In 2018, the boys won a Billboard Music Award for Top Social Artist, beating huge names like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez.

They were the first K-Pop group to win one.

"We still cannot believe that we are standing here on this stage at the Billboard Music Awards," the group said in their acceptance speech.

BTS fans excitedly wait ahead of a concert.

Social media has helped the group to build up millions of loyal followers, like these fans - sporting some of the band's BT21 characters! - who are looking forward to seeing their idols in concert in Los Angeles last month

Social media has also allowed the group to connect with their followers on a really personal level and gather fans across the world, including here in the UK.

Not only that, but they also engage with their fans via the internet in a different way to other groups like them.

Unlike many other bands, pop culture expert Kim Hern-sik says BTS are actually managed by quite a small agency and are allowed to do what they want a bit more.

"The boys are granted freedom in interacting with their fans on social media," she says. "They are really successful because they know how to interact with their fans and I think their popularity is here to stay."

4. The fans

No band can have success without its fans and BTS has some of the most loyal, dedicated fans that the world has EVER seen with 19.4 million followers on Twitter and 23.7 million on Instagram.

Known as the ARMY, it was the fans who cast an unbelievable 300 million online votes to ensure that the group won their Billboard award.

And in Autumn 2017, they watched the video for 'DNA' 50 million times on YouTube in just one month!

With numerous pages, profiles and sites set up all over the world by adoring followers, fans spend hours posting content, sending messages and sharing their love for the seven boys.

1. The boys all live together and apparently Jin does all the cooking.

2. The band's own choreographer Mr Son says that J-Hope is the best dancer.

3. What do they like to do to relax? The answer = SLEEP!

What records have BTS broken?

BTS have broken more records than we can even begin to count. But here are some of the biggies...

First K-pop group to speak at the United Nations

In September 2018, BTS made headlines for becoming the first Korean pop music group to address the United Nations (UN) .

RM, who's the leader of the band, spoke about overcoming insecurities and urged other young people to do the same.

"I've made many and plenty of mistakes in my life," he said.

"I have many faults and I have many more fears, but I'm going to embrace myself as hard as I can. And I'm starting to love myself gradually just little by little."

First K-pop group to top the US album charts

Love Yourself: Tear made BTS the first K-pop band to top the US album charts

Their album 'Love Yourself: Tear' topped the US charts back in June, making them the first K-pop band to do so.

The latest instalment 'Love Yourself: Answer' did the same thing and they also received a record breaking 1.5 million pre-order sales for it.

But it isn't just the Love Yourself series that has brought the boys album success. Wings became the first Korean album to enter the UK album charts too.

First Korean act to perform a US stadium show

BTS performing at Billboard Awards 2018.

Here, the boys were making history as the first Korean act to perform at the Billboard Awards

...and they'll be bringing it to the UK oh-so-soon! We can hardly wait.

On the subject of performances, when the group performed the TV debut of their single Fake Love at the 2018 Billboard awards, they became the first Korean artist to perform at this ceremony and the first Asian artist to premiere a new song at it.

And that's not everything. BTS are also the first Korean group to have performed at the American Music Awards, which they did back in November 2017 with their single DNA.

Oh so many online records (we've lost count!)

A group shot of the boy band BTS on stage

Well, first of all, BTS appear in the 2019 edition of Guinness World Records - twice.

The group has the record for the most Twitter engagements, with each of their tweets having an average of 330,624 retweets, replies, likes or other interactions.

In August 2018, the band's song 'Idol' also set the record for the most viewed music video online in its first 24 hours , with over 45 million views.

This beat Taylor Swift's record, which she set almost exactly one year before, when her track 'Look What You Made Me Do' got 43.2 million views.

Harry Styles clapping.

The boys took the Twitter record off former One Direction member Harry Styles

By the start of October 2018, 'Idol' was sailing past 194 million views.

On top of these records, BTS also have the gong for longest time spent at the top of the US's Billboard Social 50 chart - a popularity chart which ranks the most active musical artists on the world's leading social networking services.

They pinched the record off Justin Bieber after remaining at number one for the 57th week in a row.

What do you think of the record-breaking BTS boys? Have you been lucky enough to get tickets to see them in concert? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Telling the Story of BTS

presentation about bts

This piece originally appeared in our Daily newsletter. Sign up to receive the best of The New Yorker every day in your in-box .

The writer E. Tammy Kim recently published a piece about how BTS became arguably the most popular band in history . The newsletter editor Jessie Li spoke to Kim about what it was like to report on the Korean boy band and the thrill of seeing them live at their final concert before they announced, on June 14th, that they were taking a break.

What was your first introduction to BTS? What made you realize that this was a story you wanted to pursue?

I started noticing a few years ago that K-pop fandom was being eclipsed by a more specific BTS ARMY —which stands for “Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth”—fandom. But I sort of ignored it—thinking of myself as someone who reported on more “respectable” Korean topics—until I realized how silly that was. This is the biggest band in the world!

Devoted fans describe BTS as a form of self-care and therapy; they talk about how the band “saved” them, and how they “do so much for us.” How would you describe the special allure of BTS that distinguishes them from other bands, including other Korean boy bands?

There’s an intensely felt reciprocity between BTS and its fans. The members produce daily content, and shout-out and interact with fans on a very emotional level, which leads fans, in turn, to want to give back.

In April, you attended the final performance of the band’s “Permission to Dance” tour, in Las Vegas. What was the most surprising or unexpected moment you experienced when you attended the concert?

I’d never been in a concert attended by sixty-five thousand people—and then to have all those people, of every stripe, singing in Korean, my household tongue. I was overwhelmed!

If you had to devise a mixtape of just three BTS songs or music videos for a novice listener, what would you pick and why?

The music videos for “ Black Swan ,” “ IDOL ,” and “ ON ” are aesthetically thrilling and convey the band’s musical and choreographic range.

Having finally delved into the world of BTS (as you write, “nine years of music, dancing, articles, and tweets”), do you now identify as a member of BTS’s ARMY , as fans call themselves? And do you have a bias—a favorite member of the band?

ARMY ’s devotion is such that I wouldn’t dare call myself ARMY ! In terms of a bias, I can’t say for sure, but I really dig SUGA’s candor and appreciate the fact that, very early on, he wrote a song commemorating the Gwangju uprising of 1980, a key moment in South Korea’s democratization.

A Beginner’s Guide To BTS For Everyone Who Is Curious

It's never too late to get to know the pure joy that is BTS.

Jenna Guillaume

BuzzFeed Contributor

Welcome to the world of BTS .

While BTS are by no means a new phenomenon, they are picking up new fans all the time. If you're one, or you're even just mildly curious and perhaps want to learn their names (warning: that's how it starts for everyone), this post is for you.

Maybe you saw an article about one of the many records they've broken, or their charity , or the passion of their fans . Perhaps it was a Twitter fancam that did it, or a music video , or a performance that drew you in.

Whatever caught your interest, it can be overwhelming to dip your toe into the BTS pool at first. Nine years' worth of content is A LOT – especially with a band as prolific as BTS. But there's also a lot of joy to be found once you start making your way through it. So consider this a basic overview to help guide you on your trip down the rabbit hole...

Who are BTS?

BTS run towards the camera in a white studio wearing preppy clothes

BTS are a seven-member group from South Korea who debuted on June 13, 2013. Their name in Korean is 방탄소년단 – which means Bangtan Sonyeondan and translates to Bulletproof Boy Scouts. Their fans are known as ARMY. Originally focused on hip-hop, over the years BTS have diversified their range and produced a vast array of music (and a lot of other content, too). When it comes to BTS, there's basically something for everyone.

In terms of following the band, there are several platforms to check out, depending on what you're interested in. The seven members share one Twitter account, @BTS_twt , which they use for personal updates. They also use the app Weverse for sharing posts and photos and interacting with fans, while the VLive app is where they mainly livestream. The members also have their own personal Instagram accounts, which you can find here: RM , Jin , Suga , J-Hope , Jimin , V , and Jungkook .

BTS' YouTube channel, Bangtan TV , is where behind-the scenes clips, dance practices and video logs are dropped.

BTS' Soundcloud is where you'll find a whole bunch of music the band has released for free, from pre-debut songs to solo tracks and mixtapes to covers of their fave artists.

The band has an official Twitter , Instagram , and Facebook , all of which are updated by staff and used primarily for official announcements and photos.

New video content tends to come with English subtitles, and livestreams are typically subtitled within a day or two. But Google translations for social content are basically never accurate, so it's a good idea to follow fan translators who collectively provide almost instant translations. Here's a Twitter list of some fans who regularly translate BTS content into English.

Meet The Members

RM a.k.a. Kim Namjoon

RM wears a leopard print robe and raps into a microphone; the background is red

RM, 27, is the leader of BTS and part of their rapline (that is, the rappers of the group). He was formerly known as Rap Monster, but changed his stage name to RM in 2017.

RM is fluent in English, having learnt it from watching Friends growing up, and is known for his intelligence and introspection. His hobbies include bicycling, bonsais, visiting galleries and museums, and collecting art and woodwork.

While all the members of BTS are involved in song-writing and music production, RM writes a significant portion of their lyrics. His solo songs within BTS include "Intro: What Am I To You" , "Reflection" , "Trivia 承: Love" , and "Intro: Persona" .

In addition to their work with BTS, each member has solo projects. For RM, that's his two mixtapes – RM and Mono – as well as the song "Bicycle" and collaborations with artists such as Lil Nas X , Younha , eAeon , and Wale .

Jin a.k.a. Kim Seokjin

Jin has light brown hair and wears a white suit, he holds a fake rose and is kissing it; his other hand holds a pink sparkly mic

Jin, 29, is the eldest member of BTS and a part of the vocal line (i.e. the vocalists). He originally trained as an actor, but was scouted off the street by Big Hit Entertainment, the agency that formed BTS.

Jin's nickname is "Worldwide Handsome", which he earned after going viral several times for his good looks. He has a cheerful personality and goofy sense of humor that is rife with dad jokes, which he often uses to break the ice and set the other members at ease during public appearances.

Jin sometimes does mukbang (i.e. "eating broadcast") livestreams using the name Eat Jin . He spends a lot of his spare time gaming, and also enjoys fishing, especially with fellow member Suga.

His solo songs for BTS include "Awake" , "Epiphany" , and "Moon" , and he's also released several songs of his own, including "Tonight" , "Abyss" , "Yours" (for the soundtrack of K-drama Jirisan ), and "Super Tuna" .

Suga a.k.a. Min Yoongi

Suga poses Agust D poses during the shooting of music video "Daechwita"; he has dark hair and a fake scar drawn on his face

Suga, 29, is a part of the rapline of BTS. He's quite introverted, but is also a direct communicator with a dry sense of humor.

While all the members of BTS often display strong emotional intelligence, this is especially the case with Suga – he frequently dispenses realistic but comforting advice to both the other members and fans.

Suga often acts as an MC in BTS shows (more on those later), and in 2020 did his own version of a radio livestream series called Honey FM . Suga grew up playing piano and basketball, and is learning guitar and other instruments.

His solo songs for BTS are "Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life" , "First Love" , "Trivia 轉: Seesaw" , and "Interlude: Shadow" . He has released two solo mixtapes under the name Agust D, called Agust D and D-2 . Suga has also collaborated with Halsey , Max , Lee So-ra , and Psy , as well as produced music for artists like ØMI , Heize , Epik High , Suran , and IU .

J-Hope a.k.a. Jung Hoseok

J-Hope poses while looking away from the camera; he has dark hair and wears a t-shirt that says "obey" on it"

J-Hope , 28, is the third member of BTS' rapline. With a background in street dance, J-Hope is one of the primary dancers of the group.

His stage name is no coincidence, and J-Hope is often called "sunshine" by fans because of how outgoing and bubbly he is. His catchphrase is "I'm your hope, you're my hope, I'm J-Hope", and the other members frequently credit him with giving them energy. He's also passionate about fashion, and his eclectic clothes reflect his bright personality.

J-Hope has a series of dance videos called "Hope On The Street", in which he uploads clips or livestreams himself dancing, sometimes with others as guests.

J-Hope's BTS solos include "Intro: Boy Meets Evil" , "Mama" , "Trivia 起: Just Dance" , and "Outro: Ego" . As a solo artist, he has released the mixtape Hope World , the single "Chicken Noodle Soup" featuring Becky G , and an official album, Jack in the Box , which included lead singles "More" and "Arson" .

Jimin a.k.a. Park Jimin

Jimin dances with a white piece of fabric, dressed all in white with silver hair

Jimin, 26, is a vocalist and another of the primary dancers of BTS, with a background in contemporary dance.

Jimin is an extrovert who often talks about how he thrives in the company of others and enjoys spending a lot of time with his friends. He's known as a "memory squirrel" because of his habit of taking and collecting Polaroids.

Jimin is frequently shown to be affectionate and caring, leading birthday celebrations and offering comfort when the others are upset. But he also has a Slytherin streak that manifests in a wicked sense of humor.

Jimin's solo songs with BTS are "Lie" , "Serendipity" , and "Filter" . As a soloist he's also released "Promise" and "Christmas Love" , as well as a collaboration with his friend Ha Sungwoon called "With You" for the soundtrack of Our Blues .

V a.k.a. Kim Taehyung

V looks at the camera with his dog, Yeontan, in his lap; they're seated at a table which has a glass of wine on it; there is scribbles drawn on the photo in the background to cover a mirror

V, 25, is part of BTS' vocal line. He has a reputation for being friendly and outgoing, with a mischievous sense of humor. He is often shown thinking outside of the box and coming up with unique ideas.

V has a love of visual arts and is especially interested in photography. He sometimes shares his own work under the name Vante .

He also has acting experience, having starred in the k-drama Hwarang . He became close friends with fellow castmembers Park Seojoon and Park Hyungsik, and together with actor Choi Wooshik and musician Peakboy, they have a famous friendship group called the Wooga Squad , which was documented on 2022's reality series In the Soop: Friendcation .

V's solo songs with BTS are "Stigma" , "Singularity" , and "Inner Child" . He has also released several songs as a soloist, including "4 O'Clock" (with RM), "Scenery" , "Winter Bear" , "It's Definitely You" (with Jin, for the Hwarang soundtrack), "Sweet Night" (for the soundtrack of Park Seojoon's drama Itaweon Class ), and "Snow Flower" (which features Peakboy).

Jungkook a.k.a. Jeon Jungkook

A mirror selfie of Jungkook; he holds his phone and wears a sweater and a beanie

Jungkook is a vocalist and, at 24, the maknae (i.e. youngest member) of BTS. He's open-hearted and a perfectionist, with a reputation for being good at everything (especially singing and dancing) that's earned him the nickname "Golden Maknae".

He's athletic and loves the gym and adrenaline-fuelled activities. He boxes as a hobby, and he also gets creative in his spare time, occasionally sharing his art with fans.

Jungkook is particularly passionate about video, filming and editing his own clips while travelling with BTS and releasing them under the name G.C.F. (which stands for Golden Closet Film).

His solo songs with BTS include "Begin" , "Euphoria" and "My Time" . He's uploaded many covers to BTS' Soundcloud, and has released several songs as a soloist, including "Still With You" , "My You" , "Stay Alive" (which was produced by Suga for the 7 Fates: Chakho webtoon), and a collaboration with Charlie Puth called "Left and Right" .

The Music Of BTS

The members of BTS embrace while wearing all pink and yelling happily

BTS generally releases music as part of ongoing series that focus on different themes and tell specific stories. While their music videos usually include captions with English subtitles, in general they don't release official English translations for all of their songs. There are, however, plenty of fan translations, such as those at Muish , Doolset Bangtan and Do You Bangtan .

Here's a broad overview of the main eras in BTS' music career :

The School Trilogy (2013-2014)

A still from the "No More Dream" music video; BTS pose in front of a school buss with flames surrounding it; they were black and white patterned outfits and lots of jewellery

BTS' debut era was centred around teenage feelings, from crushes to the frustration of being up against rigid and oppressive systems. The School Trilogy is made up of three EPs:

• 2 Cool 4 Skool , the release of which was connected with BTS' debut trailer , a music video for title track "No More Dream" , and a second music video for "We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2" .

• O!RUL8,2? , which was released with a trailer and a music video for title track "N.O" .

• Skool Luv Affair , which came with a trailer , a music video for title track "Boy In Luv" as well as one for "Just One Day" . This mini album was later repackaged as a Skool Luv Affair Special Addition with two extra songs.

Although not technically part of the School Trilogy, BTS' first full studio album, Dark and Wild , follows on from it and extends the themes of teenage rebellion and horniness. The trailer for Dark and Wild features RM's "Intro: What Am I To You" . It was followed by music videos for the title track "Danger" and then later "War of Hormone" .

In addition to their Korean music, BTS also releases Japanese versions of some tracks, as well as original Japanese songs. In this era, they dropped Japanese singles of "No More Dream" , "Boy In Luv" , and "Danger" . These were followed by their first Japanese album, Wake Up , which featured the singles and Japanese versions of other songs, as well as several new Japanese tracks.

The Youth Trilogy (2015-2016)

BTS walk in a line along train tracks; they wear casual clothes

The Youth Trilogy is also known as Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa (HYYH) or The Most Beautiful Moment in Life series, and it explores the growing pains of young adulthood.

This era saw BTS play with a new look and a different sound, and introduce a fictional storyline – later dubbed the Bangtan Universe (BU) – told through their music videos and in notes in their albums. All videos that are part of the canon include "BU content" in their description on YouTube – and if you want to dive even deeper, you can get a compilation book of all the notes that expand on the story, plus read the associated webtoon .

The albums in this series are:

• The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 , a mini album. A trailer was released featuring Suga's "Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment In Life" , followed by two versions of the music video for title track "I Need You" . A music video was also released for "Dope" .

• The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 , another mini album. This was preceded by a short BU film called " 화양연화 On Stage: Prologue " and also a trailer featuring "Intro: Never Mind" , a song performed by the rapline. There was then a music video for title track "Run" .

• The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever , which is a compilation album that includes some tracks from the Part 1 and Part 2 mini albums, in addition to three new tracks and several remixes. Music videos were released for title track "Fire" , as well as "Save Me" , and "Epilogue: Young Forever" .

This era also saw the release of the Japanese album Youth , with singles including the original song "For You" and Japanese versions of "I Need You" and "Run" .

The Wings Era (2016-2017)

BTS sit in formalwear in a purple elaborately styled room with multiple chandeliers

Partly inspired by Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth , a coming-of-age novel by Hermann Hesse, this era continues the BU storyline and deepens BTS' exploration of growing up, with a focus on losing your innocence and navigating temptation.

Wings is the first album of the era. It was preceded by the release of seven short films, each centred around a different member's solo song: "Begin" , "Lie" , "Stigma" , "First Love" , "Reflection" , "Mama" , and "Awake" . These were followed by a trailer featuring J-Hope's "Intro: Boy Meets Evil" and a music video for title track "Blood Sweat & Tears" .

The second album of this era is You Never Walk Alone , which is actually a repackage of Wings with the addition of three new songs. Two of these, "Spring Day" and "Not Today" , were released as singles with music videos.

These Korean releases were followed by a Japanese version of Blood Sweat & Tears .

The Love Yourself Series (2017-2018)

BTS stand in a row wearing casual clothes; they all have dark hair

This era, as the name suggests, is all about loving yourself. It continues the BU plot, and began with the release of four short films called the Highlight Reels: "起" , "承" , "轉" , and "起承轉結" .

The series consists of three albums:

• Love Yourself 承 'Her' , a mini album. Its trailer is a music video for Jimin's solo "Serendipity" , which was followed by title track "DNA" and later "Mic Drop" .

• Love Yourself 轉 'Tear' , a studio album. Ahead of its release, a short film "Euphoria: Theme of Love Yourself 起 Wonder" featuring Jungkook's solo "Euphoria" was dropped, as well as a trailer/music video for V's "Singularity" . There was also a music video for title track "Fake Love" , which was followed by an extended version .

• Love Yourself 結 'Answer' , a compilation album featuring tracks from Her and Tear as well as several new songs and remixes. Its trailer was a music video for Jin's solo "Epiphany" , and its title track was "Idol" . A second version of "Idol" was later released featuring Nicki Minaj.

A Japanese album Face Yourself was also released in this era, featuring both original tracks and Japanese versions of some Love Yourself songs. Music videos were released for the Japanese versions of "Mic Drop" and "Airplane Pt 2" , the latter of which wasn't on Face Yourself but released afterward as a separate single.

The Map of the Soul Series (2019-2020)

BTS stand in a row wearing formalwear with different coloured hair; there are lit-up signs in the background

This era takes inspiration from Carl Jung's psychological theories, as examined in Jung's Map Of The Soul by Dr Murray Stein. It uses Jung's ideas of the persona, shadow, and ego as a framework through which BTS explore their own lives and fame.

The series began with the mini album Map of the Soul: Persona . Its trailer is a music video for RM's solo "Intro: Persona" . Its title track is "Boy With Luv" , which features Halsey. A music video for a remixed version of "Make It Right" featuring Lauv was later released, and was followed by two more remixes of the song.

The next album in the series is Map of the Soul: 7 , a full studio album which carries over five songs from Persona and adds 14 new songs. There were a number of videos tied in with the release of 7 : two trailers which act as music videos for Suga's "Interlude: Shadow" and J-Hope's "Outro: Ego" ; an art film for "Black Swan" followed later by an official music video ; and a kinetic manifesto film for title track "On", which was also followed by an official music video .

Although not part of the Map of the Soul series, BTS also released a soundtrack for their mobile game BTS World during this time period, which featured four new songs and had an accompanying music video for "Heartbeat" .

BTS also released a Japanese single "Lights" in 2019, and the Japanese Album Map of the Soul: 7 ~The Journey~ in July 2020, which included several new songs, including the title track "Stay Gold" .

The Pandemic Era (2020-2022)

Like literally everyone else, BTS' plans were completely derailed by COVID-19. Instead of touring the world, they found themselves stuck at home, and so they turned to doing what they do best: creating music.

In August 2020, they released their very first all-English single, "Dynamite" , saying they wanted the song to give energy and joy to fans around the world going through a hard time. They also released several remixes of the track, and "Dynamite" earned BTS their first Billboard Hot 100 number one and a Grammy nomination.

In November 2020, BTS released a new album BE , which features "Dynamite" and six new songs, including title track "Life Goes On" , which also hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reflects their experiences during the pandemic, with a particular focus on mental health, their relationship to their work, and their yearning to see fans.

While all seven BTS members have always participated in creating their music to some degree, BE saw them take on a greater level of involvement than ever before. In addition to more input in the songwriting process, different members each took the lead on various aspects of the album creation, such as the concept photos, packaging, and music video. They documented some of this work in a series of livestreams in the lead up to the album release.

In 2021, BTS released two more English language singles, "Butter" (which came with several remixes, including one featuring Megan Thee Stallion ), and "Permission to Dance" . Both songs hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Butter" earned the group another Grammy nomination.

BTS also collaborated with Coldplay on their song "My Universe" from their album Music of the Spheres .

In June 2021, BTS released a Japanese compilation album called BTS, the Best , featuring some of their biggest Japanese hits as well as new single "Film Out" .

In June 2022, BTS released an anthology album called Proof ,  which featured three new songs, including the title track "Yet To Come" . Following the album release, they announced they'd be scaling back group activities to focus more on solo work for awhile.

The Performances Of BTS

One of the most impressive things about BTS are their spectacular live performances. While it's definitely worth watching their full concerts if you want to really dive deep, there are a lot of performances from awards shows and other TV appearances that are a great entry point. Here are just some to start with:

• "Blood Sweat & Tears" on M Countdown .

• "Boy Meets Evil", "Blood Sweat & Tears" and "Fire" at the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs).

• "Not Today", "DNA", "Cypher Pt. 4", and "Mic Drop" at the 2017 MAMAs.

The Shows Of BTS

In addition to music and the content directly related to it, BTS keep very busy with a wide array of video projects.

There's a lot to explore, but their current shows are the best place to start. Variety show Run BTS is extremely entertaining and a fun way to get to know the individual members better. All episodes are available for free on VLive , with newer ones also released on Weverse . Bon Voyage , BTS' travel reality series, is also great if you are willing to pay for content. Seasons 1-3 are available on VLive , and Season 4 is on Weverse . In The Soop , which documents soothing pandemic-era escapes into the forest for the group, has two seasons available for purchase on Weverse .

BTS have released several docu-series following their lives on tour, which are all incredibly insightful. The first, Burn the Stage , focuses on their Wings tour and is available for purchase on YouTube , as is the accompanying Burn the Stage: the Movie . Their second series, Bring the Soul , follows their Love Yourself tour and is available on Weverse , as is a companion movie . Their third series, Break the Silence , which focuses on the end of the Love Yourself tour and the subsequent Love Yourself: Speak Yourself tour, can also be purchased on Weverse along with its movie version.

So, do you know BTS?

BTS laugh as an interview asks "What is your go to pick up line" and Suga answers "Do you know BTS?"

If you made it this far, congrats! You've just scratched the surface of BTS content and still have so much left to discover. Go forth and binge! There's no turning back.

Why Is BTS So Popular? 9 Questions About The K-Pop Phenoms Answered

With BTS' first anthology album, 'Proof,' on the horizon, GRAMMY.com breaks down what has made the K-pop group such a global force. Find out who the South Korean septet has collaborated with, what inspires their music and more.

Since their debut in 2013, BTS has become the epitome of pop music phenomenon. They've been nominated for two GRAMMYs, they've charted four number 1 albums faster than any group since the Beatles , and have broken 25 Guinness World Records . And the South Korean group did it all while singing mostly in their native language, creating strides for other Asian music acts.

The septet — consisting of members J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, RM, Suga, and V — hasn't released an album since 2020's Be, so naturally, fans are excited for BTS' upcoming anthology album, Proof , on June 10 . The three-part project will include both old and new tracks, and will surely showcase the magic that is BTS.

In preparation for the release, let's brush up on the record-breakers' captivating career as they return to their roots in a fresh way. Whether you're part of the ARMY or simply wondering what makes BTS so special, GRAMMY.com answers some of the most burning questions about the K-pop phenoms.

Has BTS Always Been A K-Pop Group?

BTS debuted on June 12, 2013 with a single album called 2 Cool for Skool . The project had a rebellious nature, taking on topics of misunderstanding and prejudice. Musically, it leaned more hip-hop — but that's not too surprising, as members Suga and RM have a background in the underground rap scene in Korea. Still to this day, BTS' hip-hop influences allow them to stand out with authenticity.

While they identify as a K-pop group, they've changed up their style throughout the years, and have always had a strong rap throughline. The strength of their rapping skills has allowed them to be one of the few non-Western artists to land on Billboard's Top Rap Album's chart. (The 2020 re-release of 2014's Skool Luv Affair debuted on the chart that November).

Their rap inspirations continue on Proof : One of the upcoming singles, "Born Singer," is adapted from  J. Cole's "Born Sinner" from his 2013 album of the same name. BTS unofficially released and performed the track back in 2013.

Why Is BTS So Popular?

Their music — which spans several languages, including Korean, English and Japanese — attracts a global audience, even causing a huge spark in tourism in their home country. In 2020, the HRI reported that at least 796,000 people visited South Korea for BTS.

This is only a glimpse of how expansive and diverse their ARMY is. Their fan base — which stands for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth — has also proven to be incredibly loyal, particularly on social media. Each member has over 34 million Instagram followers on their personal accounts, and the group's 64 million followers make them the most-followed group on the app. On Twitter (where the group has 46 million followers), each of their posts garners around 2 million likes.

There are many appeals to BTS. Good music that transcends genre is only icing on the cake. They're also extremely talented performers, have uplifting messages in their music, speak up on important issues, and have built an organic bond with their fans. It also doesn't hurt that their friendship with each other is palpable. Because of the community and comfort many people find in the group, it makes fans that much more passionate in supporting them.

Was "Dynamite" BTS' First English Song?

"Dynamite" — which took the world by storm in 2020 — was BTS' first all-English single of their own, but one of their 2018 collaborations with Steve Aoki , "Waste it on Me," marked their first entirely English song. (Only Jungkook, RM, and Jimin sing on the track, though.) The chill EDM single followed earlier Aoki/BTS team-ups like 2017's "Mic Drop" and 2018's "The Truth Untold."

Who Has BTS Collaborated With?

Along with Aoki, BTS have hopped on tracks with a notable amount of their superstar peers. Calling back to their rap influences, the septet has collabed with several rappers, including Nicki Minaj , Desiigner , Wale, and Megan Thee Stallion . Snoop Dogg also claims he has something in the works with the group.

2019 was a busy collaboration year for BTS, as they recruited Halsey for the colorful single "Boy With Luv" and Lauv for a remix of "Make It Right" (Jimin and Jungkook featured on a Lauv song called "Who" in 2020). That summer, BTS released a soundtrack album called BTS World: Original Soundtrack (from the mobile game of the same name) , which featured Charli XCX , Zara Larsson and the late Juice WRLD. In 2021, BTS joined forces with Coldplay for the anthemic single "My Universe."

What Inspires BTS' Music?

BTS don't just make music, they make art. Though it's easy to enjoy their infectious melodies and punchy beats, there's also a deeper layer that can be explored. Much of their music is inspired by literature and psychology.

Their 2016 studio album Wings was inspired by Hermann Hesse's Demian , with references to its theme apparent in the video for "Blood, Sweat, and Tears." "Persona," from their EP Map of the Soul: Persona took inspiration from "Jung's Map of the Soul," the music video for "Spring Day" referenced Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" with a sign that read "Omelas," and "Butterfly" reflects through RM's direct lines on the plot of Takashi Murakami's "Kafka on the Shore." There's many more hidden gems throughout their work worth exploring.

Who Is The 8th Member Of BTS?

Although BTS has always been publicly known as a seven-piece group, they were almost known as eight. Kim Ji-Hun trained with BTS and hoped to join the final lineup — initially scouted for his breakdancing skills — but was cut by management before the group debuted.

In an interview with Vice, Ji-Hun details life training as an idol and his relationship as a "second parent" to the other members. Ji-Hun now works at a government job in veterans health while also making YouTube videos under the name Bitoon .

Does BTS Have Any GRAMMYs?

BTS have been nominated for two GRAMMYs, both for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Their first nom came in 2021 for "Dynamite," then "Butter" earned their second nod in 2022. While they aren't the only GRAMMY-nominated Korean musicians, they are the only K-pop act to receive nominations.

Who Writes BTS' Songs?

All members of the group have had a hand in songwriting since the group's debut, most frequently RM, Suga, and J-Hope. (RM has recent writing credits on both "Black Swan" and "Butter.")

The group has also outsourced to fellow pop stars including Ed Sheeran , who is credited on "Permission to Dance" and "Make It Right," and Troye Sivan, who co-wrote "Louder Than Bombs" a cut from Map of the Soul: 7 . DJ Swivel , who is best known as Beyoncé 's personal recording engineer, has co-written several of BTS' songs from 2018 to 2020. South Korean producers/songwriters Pdogg, Supreme Boi and Hitman Bang are also listed as songwriters across different projects over the years.

Which Issues Does BTS Fight For?

BTS have long been supportive of mental health awareness and self-love, evident in the themes of their music — most notably, the Love Yourself album trilogy. Starting in 2017, they also joined UNICEF for the Love Myself campaign against violence and spoke at the United Nations in 2018 to promote Generation Unlimited, a campaign for educating young people and vocational training. They were joined at the UN with former South Korean President Moon Jae-in in 2021 where they were appointed as presidential envoy for future generations and culture.

In 2020, they also made a statement in support of BLM coupled with a donation of $1 million. This sparked fans to match their donation within a day.

Next up, BTS is heading to the White House as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month comes to a close on May 31. The group will meet with President Joe Biden to discuss diversity, Asian inclusion, representation, and anti-Asian hate.

The BTS guys have addressed the discrimination they've experienced in the past, issuing a statement condemning anti-Asian hate in early 2021 amid a spike in Asian hate crimes. "We stand against racial discrimination," they wrote. "We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together."

GRAMMY Museum Partners With HYBE For New K-Pop Exhibit 'HYBE: We Believe In Music' Opening Aug. 2

Running Aug. 2 through Sept. 15, the GRAMMY Museum exhibit showcases artifacts from superstar HYBE artists, including BTS, SEVENTEEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, ENHYPEN, LE SSERAFIM, and many more.

The GRAMMY Museum joins forces with HYBE to present its newest exhibit, HYBE: We Believe In Music, A GRAMMY Museum Exhibit . This interactive exhibit chronicles the history and impact of HYBE, and showcases its legacy of unparalleled innovation and creativity as a trend-setting global entertainment brand.

The exhibit opens on Aug. 2 in downtown Los Angeles and features spotlight moments with K-pop stars BTS , SEVENTEEN , TOMORROW X TOGETHER , ENHYPEN , LE SSERAFIM , and many more. "HYBE: We Believe In Music" runs through Sept.15. The exhibit will kick off on Aug. 1 with "Global Spin Live: TWS," a program featuring a moderated conversation with K-pop group TWS, followed by a performance.

The exhibit traces HYBE's evolution and influence by showcasing instantly recognizable artifacts from its roster of artists, creators, and fans. The displays notably feature original outfits worn in iconic music videos such as "Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)" by BTS, "MAESTRO" by SEVENTEEN, "Sugar Rush Ride" by TOMORROW X TOGETHER, "Sweet Venom" by ENHYPEN, and "EASY" by LE SSERAFIM. HYBE: We Believe In Music also boasts accessories and performance gear donned by ZICO, fromis_9, BOYNEXTDOOR, TWS, &TEAM, and ILLIT. The exhibit marks the first time these artifacts will be on display together in one location.

Other highlights include interactive sing-along and dance rooms, a dedicated Fan Section celebrating the endless support between HYBE artists and their fandoms, a Mono to Immersive room featuring BTS's 2022 GRAMMYs performance of "Butter," and a Photoism Booth that allows visitors to pose alongside their favorite K-pop artists.  The GRAMMY Museum exhibit will also feature exclusive video content with producers, artists, music videos, and more.

"HYBE and their artists represent the present and future of the global music landscape, and our goal with this exhibit is to deepen the appreciation and respect for its creators and performers," says Michael Sticka , President/CEO of the GRAMMY Museum. HYBE Chief Operating Officer Taeho Kim added, "Putting out an exhibition that captures HYBE's journey is a new experience for us. We're very excited about this partnership with GRAMMY Museum, and we look forward to welcoming music fans who visit the museum to enjoy and connect with our historical pieces."

The exhibit highlights the roots of HYBE's meteoric rise. In 2005, South Korean producer, composer, and songwriter Bang Si-Hyuk, known as "hitman" Bang, changed the trajectory of Korean pop music by launching the record label Big Hit Entertainment. He soon signed a talented 16-year-old rapper named RM , which became the first step in creating the label's groundbreaking boy band — BTS. With the group's global success, "hitman" Bang and Big Hit Entertainment became known as musical trailblazers and record industry innovators. Big Hit Entertainment has now evolved into HYBE, which only continues to break boundaries in music and beyond.

Stream RM's New Album 'Right Place, Wrong Person': See The Tracklist, "LOST!" Video & Special Guests

The second solo album from BTS' RM further displays his knack for genre-bending experimentation, while also delving deeper into his vulnerable side. Listen to the new album here, and get to know the project's featured artists, tracklist and more.

As the world patiently awaits the return of BTS in full force, each member continues to deliver solo projects to show off their individual talents. And 18 months after his last album, RM is back.

With a discography that hops between pop, R&B, and hip-hop, RM returns to the spotlight with his second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person . The project tells the relatable story of an individual who is a creature of habit, but slowly comes to find solace in foreign spaces.

Below, listen to RM's latest album, and discover more about how he's revealing a new side of his artistry with Right Place, Wrong Person .

The Tracklist

After RM's debut solo album, 2022's Indigo, had 10 tracks (including features from the likes of Erykah Badu , Anderson .Paak ), he ups the tally with an 11-song tracklist this time around.

Here is the complete tracklist for Right Place, Wrong Person :

1. Right People, Wrong Place 2. Nuts 3. out of love 4. Domodachi (feat. Little Simz) 5. ? (Interlude) 6. Groin 7. Heaven 8. LOST! 9. Around the world in a day (feat. Moses Sumney) 10. ㅠㅠ (Credit Roll) 11. Come back to me

The Creative Visuals

Two weeks before the album dropped, he unveiled the music video for "Come Back to Me," the lead single from Right Place, Wrong Person . Directed by the critically acclaimed actor Lee Sung Jin, the music video narrates the tale of feeling like an outsider and yearning for a sense of belonging in unfamiliar surroundings.

Then, on the day Right Place, Wrong Person arrived, RM added to release-day excitement with another intriguing visual, this time for "LOST!" The five-minute clip sees RM as the star of "The Lost! Show," where he and a group endure an eerie whirlwind of scenarios they can't seem to get out of. It's equal parts dramatic and slapstick, and another clever display of RM's creative versatility.

Noteworthy Guests

The featured artists on Right Place, Wrong Person — British rapper Little Simz on "Domodachi" and art-pop artist Moses Sumney on "Around the world in a day" — underscore RM's ability to interlace his own musical style with artists from various genres.

The album also has some notable behind-the-scenes collaborators as well. Production credits include Kim Han-joo, keyboardist and vocalist from the South Korean rock band Silica Gel, on "LOST!" and GRAMMY-nominated jazz duo DOMi & JD Beck on "? (Interlude)."

On "Come back to me" — which RM initially debuted last August during a surprise performance at BTS bandmate Suga's encore concert in Seoul — he delves into the album's central theme of wanting to venture into unknown areas, but feeling the intense urge to stay with what's already known. The track was composed and arranged by OHHYUK from the South Korean indie-rock band Hyukoh, but also features credits from artists Kuo, JNKYRD, and San Yawn.

But no matter who RM is working with, his own talent and prowess as a creator always shines. Right Place, Wrong Person presents a diverse array of tracks marked by sheer vulnerability, honesty, and sensitivity — a masterful continuation of a remarkable solo journey.

J-Hope's Road To 'Hope On The Street Vol.1,' From Falling Back In Love With Dance To Tying Together His Global Influences

After 11 years in BTS, j-hope revisits the passion that started it all: dancing. Ahead of his new docuseries and special album, 'Hope on the Street Vol.1,' discover the full-circle journey that brought him back to his roots.

"Just dance," j-hope commands on his 2018 BTS solo track.

For the international sensation, that's what it's always been about: expressing himself through movement. Now, 11 years after the launch of the seven-piece group, j-hope takes a U-turn to where it all began, before his K-pop idol days, street dancing between his hometown, Gwangju, and Seoul, South Korea.

Out March 29, j-hope's new special album, Hope on the Street Vol.1 , is a musical ode to dancing that boasts a "vibrant collection of six tracks spanning a diverse array of sounds and moods that showcase j-hope's musical prowess and depth." Like j-hope's global perspective of dance, the EP expands borders and sounds, featuring appearances from HYBE labelmate HUH YUNJIN of LE SSERAFIM as well as American stars Nile Rodgers and Benny Blanco .

The mini-album will also be accompanied by a docuseries of the same name, premiering on Amazon Prime Video on March 28. According to a press statement, the six-part project will "highlight j-hope's story and love for dancing as he begins a new journey."

Ahead of Hope on the Street Vol.1 's arrival, take a look at how j-hope's origins inspired the project — from his enrollment in a local dance academy to songwriting with J. Cole on their 2023 single, "on the street."

Finding Purpose In Dance

Long before becoming a global superstar, j-hope (born Jung Ho-seok) first discovered his love for dancing on the playground.

"The school I went to had a dance lesson for 30 minutes in the morning. They would play a dance video, and we would copy it as exercise," j-hope recalled in a 2013 interview for the BTS Japan Fanclub magazine. "My friends around me would praise me, saying, 'You're really good!'"

Eventually, those recess workouts turned into a passion. J-hope began practicing moves at home and freestyling at local talent shows. By the sixth grade, he told his parents he was serious about it, enrolling him in Gwangju's Joy Dance Academy.

While at the Academy, j-hope also joined the underground dance crew, NEURON, building a reputation under the name "Smile Hoya." Though he hasn't participated in the troupe since his pre-BTS days, he still recognizes it as one of the most influential parts of his career.

He'll even honor the crew with Hope on the Street , which includes a track called "NEURON," featuring Gaeko and yoonmirae . He will also return to Gwangju in the closing chapter of the docuseries.

It's not the first time j-hope shouted out Gwangju, either. His 2019 collab with Becky G, "Chicken Noodle Soup," paid tribute to his beloved upbringing: "From Gwangju, one gang of you-know-what/ Geumnam Chungjang Street, that's my Harlem." (The same track also foreshadowed his latest release: "Hope on the street, now it's my own way.")

Forging A New Life In Music With BTS

J-hope continued to have a diligent mindset as a trainee at Big Hit Entertainment. But as revealed in BTS' 2018 docuseries, Burn the Stage , training and dieting became emotionally and physically tolling. At one point, j-hope even considered leaving the group.

"I couldn't do things I wanted to do," he revealed during a 2021 You Quiz on the Block segment . "To be honest, I wanted to play games. I want to go out and hang out. I wanted to stay with my family. I had to give up a lot of things from that perspective."

The stress became so intense that he bought a one-way ticket to Gwangju. But ultimately, the brotherhood and love of music he formed with BTS gave him the courage to return: "I came back because I trusted you," j-hope recounted.

And they trusted him, too: "I told [Big Hit] that we needed Jung Ho-seok. We couldn't debut without him," RM responded. Meanwhile, Jung Kook delivered a tearful speech to encourage him to stay with the band.

The longer he stayed, the more j-hope began to love other sides of music, like producing and songwriting. Now, he has become one of the main writers for the group's tracks, alongside RM and Suga , and has co-penned all of his solo projects, including Hope on the Street .

Spreading His Wings With Two Full-Length Solo Projects

After nearly 10 projects with BTS, j-hope delivered his debut mixtape, Hope World , in March 2018.

"My fantasy had always been making a music video and performing with the music I had created. I wanted to put my own story to music and share it with the world," he told Time magazine upon Hope World ’s release.

It's an introduction to j-hope the artist, inviting listeners to step into Hope World , a colorful kaleidoscope of different cultures and styles — something that has also been a key part of his dance journey.

Though, j-hope still wanted to dig deeper into his artistry. He developed his sound, becoming more vulnerable in his lyricism on tracks like 2020's "Outro: Ego." By 2022, he was ready to drop his first studio album, Jack in the Box .

Where Hope World showcases j-hope's dance performance, Jack in the Box highlights "my artistry in music ." But Hope on the Street paints the full image of the phenom — part musician, part dancer.

Laying The Groundwork With "On The Street," Featuring J. Cole

One of j-hope's earliest musical influences was J. Cole. The rapper inspired j-hope's stage name and the title of his mixtape, which pays homage to 2011's Cole World . In 2022, j-hope honored Cole with "Born Singer," the BTS re-write of Cole's "Born Sinner." So, a celebratory meeting was in order when they were both scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza (where j-hope made history as the first Korean soloist to headline).

"[He's] my idol," j-hope said to Variety in 2023. Since they met, he "couldn't stop thinking about how great it would be if we could make music together." He reached out to J. Cole, and "on the street" was born.

As j-hope told Variety , the "street" concept became a metaphor for life: "The street is a place where people can actually encounter and feel real lives of people: a child's innocent mind; first encounter with someone and falling in love; someone in an urgent moment;" and so much more. It's the place where he learned to love dance — and where he grew a love for music and artists like J. Cole, who called their collab "a blessing" in the behind-the-scenes footage .

And thus, "on the street" became the springboard for his forthcoming project, Hope on the Street .

Unveiling A Docuseries And A Multi-Part Project

By the tail end of 2023, each member of BTS had enlisted in mandatory military service. But even during the septet's hiatus, j-hope managed to serve up a surprise announcement of Hope on the Street on Feb. 17 with a fitting montage of dance videos.

The joint docuseries and album follows j-hope's journey of self-discovery, accompanying his former instructor, Boogaloo Kin, as they dance their way through the streets of Osaka, Seoul, Paris, New York, and his hometown while meeting other dancers.

" Hope on the Street , my roots, the most important part of my life. This is how j-hope danced. I wanted to share this story with you," he said in an interview for the documentary .

After years of breaking records and making history as a member of BTS, it was "a chance to look back on my life," he explained in another trailer . "I realized the answer was in song and dance."

Culminating j-hope's skills in both art forms, Hope on the Street is a love letter to everything that's made him who he is today — and proof he'll never forget it.

9 Essential K-Pop/Western Collabs: From BTS And Megan Thee Stallion, To IVE And Saweetie

From Jungkook and Usher's tribute to their shared musical idol, to BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez' sugary sweet collab, K-pop and Western artists of all genres are joining forces to create killer hits.

It’s impossible to ignore the growing global popularity of K-pop. Although Korean pop has been around for decades, the genre's meteoric worldwide success over the past 10 years is reminiscent of Beatlemania and the early 2000s American boy band craze. With a steady increase year-over-year in album sales and K-pop groups touring the U.S. and Europe, interest in K-pop shows no signs of slowing down .

Initially launched in South Korea as a music subgenre with Western pop, R&B and hip-hop influences in the '90s, the K-pop industry is valued at around $10 billion .

Given the worldwide appetite for K-pop, several Western musicians are keen to partner with K-pop acts crossing over into more international markets, often with songs sung partially or entirely in English. While K-pop artists do not need Western artists to be successful — BTS sold out London’s Wembley stadium in under 90 minutes back in 2019, and BLACKPINK made Coachella history twice with performances in 2019 and 2023 — K-pop's massive fanbase and multi-genre influence make it an ideal collaboration for everyone from rappers and singers to electronic DJs.

But don’t take our word for it. Here are nine of the most iconic K-Pop/Western collaborations (not in any order; they are all great songs!).

Usher and Jungkook - "Standing Next to You (Usher Remix)" (2024)

The maknae (the youngest member of the group) of global K-pop superstars BTS and the King of R&B are both having banner years: Jungkook released his debut solo album, and Usher just performed at the Super Bowl .

The Bangtan Boys have cited Usher as a significant influence (even singing a callback to his 2001 hit "U Got It Bad" in their No. 1 song, "Butter"), so BTS fans were delighted when the Jungkook tapped Usher for a remix of "Standing Next to You." The song marks the fourth single from his Billboard 200 chart-topping debut album, Golden .

Both singers count Michael Jackson as a major influence. In their collaboration video, Usher and Jungkook pay tribute to the King of Pop as they slide, pop, and lock across the slick floor of an abandoned warehouse.

John Legend and Wendy of Red Velvet - "Written in the Stars" (2018)

R&B singer/pianist John Legend was the perfect choice for an R&B ballad with Wendy, the main vocalist of K-pop quintet Red Velvet. The final song on the five-track SM Station x 0 , a digital music project, "Written in the Stars," is a beautiful, mid-tempo love song. A bit of a departure from K-pop’s typical upbeat sound, Wendy and Legend are in perfect harmony over a warm yet melancholic rhythm.

As Red Velvet’s main vocalist, Wendy was the ideal voice for this collaboration. Additionally, she split her childhood between Canada and the U.S., and has been comfortable singing in English since Red Velvet debuted in 2014. This wasn't her first collab with a Western artist: In 2017, she released an English-language version of the pop ballad " Vente Pa’Ca " with Ricky Martin .

BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez - "Ice Cream" (2020)

A powerhouse debut single, BLACKPINK collaborated with pop royalty Selena Gomez on the massive 2020 hit "Ice Cream."

An electropop-bubblegum fusion filled with dairy double entendres, "Ice Cream" was an enormous success for both Gomez and the BLACKPINK girls. The track peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has racked up nearly 900 million YouTube views to date.

Written by a consortium of hitmakers, including Ariana Grande and BLACKPINK’s longtime songwriter and producer Teddy Park (a former K-pop idol himself), "Ice Cream" shows that YG Entertainment’s golden foursome and Gomez were the correct partnership for this track. The pop-trap bop marked the first time a K-pop girl group broke the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and immediately solidified BLACKPINK as global superstars.

Snoop Dogg and Monsta X - "How We Do" (2022)

West Coast rap godfather Snoop Dogg has quietly become one of the go-to Western acts for K-pop collabs, working with Psy, BTS, Girls’ Generation and 2NE1. K-pop is the Dogg Father's "guilty pleasure, " and he performed at the Mnet Asian Music Awards with Dr. Dre in 2011. Without Snoop's love of K-pop, the world might not have gotten this fun and energetic collaboration with Snoop and Monsta X, a five-member boy group under Starship Entertainment.

The song appears in The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run in a dance segment where Snoop, decked out in a pink and purple Western suit, is accompanied by zombie dancers. Though we do not see the members of Monsta X, their harmonious crooning is the perfect accent to Snoop Dogg’s trademark casual West Coast flow.

BTS and Steven Aoki - "MIC Drop (Steve Aoki remix)" (2017)

No K-pop list is complete with a nod to the magnificent seven, and "MIC Drop" is one of their catchiest Western collabs to date.

"Mic Drop" is quintessential BTS: a nod to hip-hop with a heavy bass line and fun choreography. While the original version of "MIC Drop" is excellent, the remix with EDM superstar DJ Steve Aoki and rapper Desiigner cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the first of many hits for the Bulletproof Boy Scouts.

Released at a time when BTS were just starting their ascent to chart-topping Western dominance, the track's boastful lyrics and tension-building electro-trap production offered an excellent introduction to the group that would soon become international superstars.

JYJ, Kanye West and Malik Yusef - "Ayyy Girl" (2010)

A truly deep K-pop cut, you’d be hard-pressed to find many people who know that Kanye West collaborated with a first-generation K-pop group over 13 years ago. Released as the lead single on JYJ’s English-language album The Beginning , West’s signature bravado and wordplay are on full display over a track that sounds like the Neptunes produced it.

The song garnered attention in the U.S., but after a string of bad luck (including a severely delayed U.S. visa process and issues with their management company, SM Entertainment), JYJ could not capitalize on their American success. The group continued to see success in Korea and Japan in the early 2010s but never made a splash in the Western market again.

IVE and Saweetie - "All Night" (2024)

A reimagining of Icona Pop’s 2013 song of the same name, "All Night," sees fourth-generation K-pop girl group IVE partner with rap’s resident glamor girl Saweetie for a funky, electronic-infused pop song that’s perfect for dancing from dusk till dawn.

"All Night" is the first English song for the Starship Entertainment-backed group. Interestingly, none of the members of IVE have individual lines in the song, choosing instead to sing the lyrics in a six-part harmony. This choice is exciting but fun, giving listeners the feeling that they are more than welcome to sing along.

The girl group embarked on their first 24-date world tour in January 2024, with stops in the U.S., Asia, Europe and South America. Given their quest for global dominance, there’s a good chance "All Night" won’t be IVE's last English-language release.

BTS and Megan Thee Stallion - "Butter (Remix)" (2021)

BTS’ "Butter" had already spent three weeks atop the Billboard charts and was declared the "song of the summer" when the group’s label announced Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion as the guest star for the song’s remix in late August 2021. The GRAMMY-nominated septet is no stranger to collaborating with Western musicians, having worked with Halsey , Jason Derulo, and Coldplay .

Though only slightly altered from the original (Megan’s verse was added in place of the song’s second original verse, along with several ad-libs), the remix was praised by both fans and critics alike, catapulting the song’s return back to the No. 1. Although the collaborators did not release a new music video featuring the group and the self-proclaimed "Hot Girl Coach," three members of BTS’ "dance line" (members J-Hope , Jungkook and Jimin ) released a specially choreographed dance video . Additionally, Megan was a surprise guest during BTS’ record-breaking Permission to Dance LA concert in November of the same year.

LE SSERAFIM and Niles Rodgers - "Unforgiven" (2023)

GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Nile Rodgers ' first foray into K-pop was a partnership with LE SSERAFIM , a fourth-gen girl group from the same parent company behind BTS. "Unforgiven" was released earlier this year as the lead single from the group’s debut album of the same name.

A darker take on the familiar K-pop formula with A Western feel and look (the young quintuplet dons cowboy hats, boots and bolo ties in the song’s accompanying music video), "Unforgiven" is about rebellion and being a fierce, strong and independent risk taker. That riskiness drew Rodgers' ear.

"It seems like a lot of the K-pop that I'm hearing lately, the…chord changes are a lot more interesting than what's been happening [in other music fields] over the last few years," he told GRAMMY.com in 2023. "I come from a jazz background, so to hear chord changes like that is really cool. They’re not afraid, which is great to me."

BTS

BTS has come a long way since releasing their first album in 2013, and in the decade that has passed, the K-pop stars have managed to become the biggest group in the world.

While the 2020s have seen the group’s seven members — RM, Jin, Jungkook, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin and V — releasing solo projects , smashing records (both as a group and in personal endeavors), going on tour or fulfilling their civic duties, the past decade has been a ride for the K-pop group, who, after multiple album and single releases, have created a career that only few storied music acts can dream of.

BTS Unveils New Single 'Take Two': Stream It Now

BTS’ illustrious music career formally kicked off when they debuted with 2 Cool 4 Skool . Though a far stretch from the group’s newer, chart-topping hits like “Butter,” “Dynamite” and “Permission to Dance,” the poppy crossover singles that would later cement the group’s international superstar status, the mini album established the septet as a force to be reckoned with, one that would only continue to grow with the aid of the group’s devoted ARMY fanbase.

Following the release of the new single “Take Two,” the group will celebrate the milestone anniversary, which will consist of a series of fun activities across several landmarks in Seoul, South Korea (where it all started for the septet). And to gear up for the event, Billboard is taking a look back at the past 10 years of BTS.

BTS , South Korean K-pop (Korean pop music) band that shot to international stardom in the late 2010s. Its seven members were Jin (byname of Kim Seok-Jin; b. December 4, 1992, Anyang, South Korea), Suga (original name Min Yoon-Gi; b. March 9, 1993, Buk-gu), J-Hope (byname of Jung Ho-Seok; b. February 18, 1994, Kwangju), RM (also called Rap Monster; original name Kim Nam-Joon; b. September 12, 1994, Ilsan), Jimin (byname of Park Ji-Min; b. October 13, 1995, Pusan), V (original name Kim Tae-Hyung; b. December 30, 1995, Taegu), and Jungkook (byname of Jeon Jeong-Guk; b. September 1, 1997, Pusan). BTS had a devoted following (fans called themselves ARMY [“Adorable Representative MC for Youth”]) and was popular on social media . The band broke numerous records on YouTube —namely, for the most views of a music video within 24 hours of its release, for such singles as “Boy with Luv” (2019), “Dynamite” (2020), and “Butter” (2021).

BTS was formed by Bang Si-Hyuk, a successful songwriter and music producer who established his own studio, Big Hit Entertainment, in 2005. In 2010 he began to assemble talent for a group he was calling the Bangtan Sonyeondan (“Bulletproof Boy Scouts”), which would later become better known as BTS. The members—the first of whom was RM, an underground rapper in Seoul—were selected for their singing, rapping, and dancing skills. The band’s first releases were three EP (extended play) records in the School series, including  2 Cool 4 Skool  (2013),  O!RUL8,2?  (2013), and  Skool Luv Affair  (2014). BTS’s first full-length album,  Dark & Wild , appeared in 2014. The group wrote its own lyrics, commenting on social issues and concentrating on such themes as self-love, individuality, and empowerment. The band’s popularity grew with each recording, and, after releasing  The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1  and  Part 2  (both 2015), BTS began its first world tour. With momentum from the tour,  Life, Part 2  rose to number one on six international music charts. The album  Wings  (2016) continued that success, becoming the first of the group’s albums to debut on both the Canadian Hot 100 and the  Billboard  200 charts. BTS later rereleased the songs from  Wings  with four additional singles under the title  You Never Walk Alone  (2017).

At the Billboard Music Awards presentation in 2017, BTS won the Top Social Artist Award, which had been voted on by fans. The band then won the award each year through 2021, beating such performers as  Ariana Grande  and  Justin Bieber . Meanwhile, the group released another EP,  Love Yourself: Her , in 2017. The recording debuted on the  Billboard  200 chart at number seven, becoming the first K-pop album to appear on the chart’s top 10. BTS’s third full-length album debuted in 2018. Titled  Love Yourself: Tear , it reached the top of the  Billboard  200.  Love Yourself: Answer  (2018) included material from both previous  Love Yourself  recordings along with a few new songs.

The group delivered the EP  Map of the Soul: Persona  in 2019. The music video for the lead single, “ Boy with Luv,” drew 74.6 million views on YouTube within 24 hours of its release, breaking records on the platform. BTS followed that success with the full-length album  Map of the Soul: 7  (2020). The recording won wide acclaim and debuted at number one on the  Billboard  200 chart. Later in 2020 the group released the disco-pop single “Dynamite,” its first English-language song. The single debuted at the top of the  Billboard  Hot 100 chart, and the music video amassed an unprecedented 101.1 million views on YouTube in 24 hours. BTS was nominated for a  Grammy Award  for best pop duo or group performance for the song and performed it at the 2021 awards show. The single was included on the album  Be (2020). Meanwhile, BTS also made several Japanese studio albums, including  Wake Up  (2014),  Face Yourself  (2018), and  Map of the Soul: 7—The Journey  (2020). In 2021 BTS released their second English-language single, “Butter,” which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. Its accompanying video once again beat the band’s previous record, reaching approximately 113 million views on YouTube in one day. BTS performed “Butter” at the 2022  Grammy Awards , where the song was nominated for best pop duo or group performance.

In 2018 BTS released a YouTube documentary series, Burn the Stage , about its 2017 world tour. An extended movie version (2018) later appeared in various countries. Other documentaries of BTS tours included  Bring the Soul: The Movie  (2019) and  Break the Silence: The Movie  (2020). In 2019 BTS became the first South Korean musical group to perform on the American comedy and variety television show  Saturday Night Live . Later that year a BTS-themed game,  BTS World , was released for mobile devices, along with an album of the game’s soundtrack.

Also in 2022 BTS released Proof , an anthology album that included the new single “Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment).” Shortly afterward the band announced a hiatus , suggesting that they planned to pursue solo projects. A couple of months later, their label stated that members of the group were enlisting in South Korea’s military, which by law requires all able-bodied men to enroll by the time they reach age 28 to serve for about two years (a bill passed in 2020 allowed pop stars and other cultural icons to delay conscription until the age of 30). The announcement said members planned to reconvene in 2025 after completing their service.
