• Soil Pollution : Land/Soil Pollution occurs due to the degradation of the earth’s surface by different commercial, industrial, agricultural and domestic activities. Causes of soil pollution also include mining, deforestation, dumping of e-waste and other industrial wastes, usage of harmful chemicals such as insecticides, pesticides, etc.
• Noise Pollution : Excess noise due to sounds created by machines, loudspeakers, microphones, loud music, noise from industries, construction and civil engineering works etc. lead to noise pollution.

Due to air pollution, even teenage kids have developed various respiratory diseases. Water pollution has led to diseases in children. The waste we humans dump on the land or chemical fertilisers which are put on the land for agricultural purposes causes land/ soil pollution.

If the soil quality deteriorates due to such practices, the soil will become infertile and no crops could be grown in future. The government has launched various schemes over the years to fight pollution but individual efforts can also play a vital role.

Start by replacing plastic bags for shopping with cloth bags, stopping littering on roads and stopping wasting water are some of the basic things to start with that can lead to big changes in the environment.

At a personal level, we can minimise environmental pollution by taking public transport or carpools to reduce vehicular smoke, avoiding firecrackers at festivals and celebrations can also cut down on air and noise pollution, and not using fertilisers and pesticides which can cause both water and soil pollution, and switching over to organic farming. The government can also bring strict rules and regulations to lessen industrial pollution.  

To sum up, any type of pollution is harmful to the environment with serious consequences like global warming, uneven climatic changes, etc. Due to our greediness and illegal human activities, the innocent lives of animals are lost. The time has come to join hands and work towards preserving and protecting the environment for the present as well as future generations.

All this is mainly caused by human activities which harm the environment in ways more than one. Therefore, an urgent need has arisen to tackle this issue straightaway. That is to say, pollution is damaging our earth severely and we need to realize its effects and prevent this damage. Effects of Pollution

Pollution affects the quality of life more than one can imagine. It works in mysterious ways, sometimes which cannot be seen by the naked eye. However, it is very much present in the environment. For instance, you might not be able to see the natural gases present in the air, but they are still there. Similarly, the pollutants which are messing up the air and increasing the levels of carbon dioxide is very dangerous for humans. Increased level of carbon dioxide will lead to global warming .

Further, the water is polluted in the name of industrial development, religious practices and more will cause a shortage of drinking water. Without water, human life is not possible. Moreover, the way waste is dumped on the land eventually ends up in the soil and turns toxic. If land pollution keeps on happening at this rate, we won’t have fertile soil to grow our crops on. All the used plastic ends up in the oceans and land, which pollutes them.

Noise | Noise pollution is an unpleasant sound or a sound that causes excruciating ear pain. Noise pollution is described as unpleasant and unwanted sound levels that cause significant distress to all living beings. It is measured in decibels (dB).

Environmental changes are caused by the natural or artificial content of harmful pollutants and can cause instability, disturbance, or adverse effects on the ecosystem. Earth and its environment pose a more serious threat due to the increasing pollution of air, water, and soil. Environmental damage is caused by improper resource management or careless human activities. Therefore, any activity that violates the original nature of the environment and leads to degradation is called pollution. We need to understand the origin of these pollutants and find ways to control pollution. This can also be done by raising awareness of the effects of pollutants.

Air pollution is any physical, chemical, or biological change in the air. A certain percentage of the gas is present in the atmosphere. Increasing or decreasing the composition of these gasses is detrimental to survival. This imbalance in gas composition causes an increase in global temperature which is called global warming.

Introduction to air pollution 

The Earth and its environment are facing a serious threat by the increasing pollution of the air, water, and soil—the vital life support systems of the Earth. The damage to the environment is caused by improper management of resources or by careless human activity. Hence any activity that violates the original character of nature and leads to its degradation is called pollution. We need to understand the sources of these pollutants and find ways to control pollution. This can be also done by making people aware of the effects of pollutants. 

Air with 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and 1% of all other gasses support life on Earth. Various processes take place to sustain the regular percentage of gasses and their composition in general. 

Atmospheric pollution can have natural sources, for example, volcanic eruptions. The gaseous by-products of man-made processes such as energy production, waste incineration, transport, deforestation and agriculture, are the major air pollutants.

Although air is made up of mostly Oxygen and Nitrogen, mankind, through pollution, has increased the levels of many trace gasses, and in some cases, released completely new gasses to the atmosphere. 

Air pollution can result in poor air quality, both in cities and in the countryside. Some air pollutants make people sick, causing breathing problems and increasing the likelihood of cancer. 

Some air pollutants are harmful to plants, animals, and the ecosystems in which they live. Statues, monuments, and buildings are being corroded by the air pollutants in the form of acid rain. It also damages crops and forests, and makes lakes and streams unsuitable for fish and other plant and animal life. 

Air pollution created by man-made resources is also changing the Earth’s atmosphere. It is causing the depletion of the ozone layer and letting in more harmful radiation from the Sun. The greenhouse gasses released into the atmosphere prevents heat from escaping back into space and leads to a rise in global average temperatures. Global warming affects the average sea-level and increases the spread of tropical diseases.

Air pollution occurs when large amounts of gas and tiny particles are released into the air and the ecological balance is disturbed. Each year millions of tons of gasses and particulate matter are emitted into the air. 

Primary air pollutants are pollutants, which are directly released into the air. They are called SPM, i.e., Suspended Particulate Matter. For example, smoke, dust, ash, sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and radioactive compounds, etc.

Secondary Pollutants are pollutants, which are formed due to chemical interactions between the atmospheric components and primary pollutants. For example, Smog (i.e. Smoke and fog), ozone, etc.

Major gaseous air pollutants include Carbon Dioxide, Hydrogen Sulfide, Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide, etc.

Natural sources are volcanic eruptions, forest fires, dust storms, etc. 

Man-made sources include gasses released from the automobiles, industries, burning of garbage and bricks kilns, etc.

Effects of Air Pollution on Human Health

Air pollution has adverse effects on human health. 

Breathing polluted air puts you at higher risk of asthma.

When exposed to ground ozone for 6 to 7 hours, people suffer from respiratory inflammation.

Damages the immune system, endocrine, and reproductive systems.

A high level of air pollution has been associated with higher incidents of heart problems.

The toxic chemicals released into the air are affecting the flora and fauna immensely.

Preventive Measures to Reduce Air Pollution

We can prevent pollution by utilizing raw materials, water energy, and other resources more efficiently. When less harmful substances are substituted for hazardous ones, and when toxic substances are eliminated from the production process, human health can be protected and economic wellbeing can be strengthened. 

There are several measures that can be adopted by people to reduce pollution and to save the environment.

Carpooling.

Promotion of public transport.

No smoking zone.

Restricted use of fossil fuels.

Saving energy.

Encouraging organic farming.

The government has put restrictions on the amount of fossil fuels that can be used as well as restrictions on how much carbon dioxide and other pollutants can be emitted. Although the government is attempting to save our environment from these harmful gasses, it is not sufficient. We as a society need to keep the environment clean by controlling the pollution of air.

The burning of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere which capture solar heat and raise surface and air temperatures.

Polluted water, if consumed, may be very harmful for the living beings as well as has a adverse effect on the aquatic animals. People put loud speakers to show their happiness for something or even to pray. This way they create noise pollution. Our vehicles are also a great sources of air and noise pollution. We should take same steps to minimize the pollution otherwise it will be very difficult for all of us to remain healthy on our planet earth.

An urban man is being affected gravely by pollution. All metropolitan cities have been the victims of this monster. The problem of pollution is being worsened by uncontrolled migration of the people from villages and towns to cities. Also, there is industrial pollution and vehicular pollution. Small children who live in the polluted area of the cities are the most unsuspecting victims of pollution.

There are many factors which are responsible for pollution. Industrial production in big cities releases many poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. The industrial waste is polluting the water of the rivers and oceans. The coastal waters have been polluted by the discharge of sewage and harbour waste. The silence is disturbed by noisy machines, vehicles and loud music blaring from stereos. In fact, the danger of pollution has become universal and the very future of mankind is in great danger if proper steps are not taken to check this menace.

The government is trying to minimise pollution in thickly populated areas of big cities of the country. In most of the states, lead-free petrol is being provided. In big cities the vehicle owners have to get their vehicles checked every three months to ensure that the pollution is under control. Also, many factories and small industries have been shifted and are being shifted from the congested areas to ‘safe’ places. Many other steps are being taken by the authorities who are fully aware of the menace of pollution. However, this problem can be solved if all persons take steps to keep their environment pollution free. Then only the efforts of government and non-governmental agencies in controlling pollution, will bear fruit.

It is often seen that in a train while travelling when a person begins to smoke a cigarette, some take out a handkerchief and cover their noses or some others may move out into the corrider. Besides air pollution there is water pollution, land pollution and even noise pollution. Every form of pollution is purely man made and can be avoided or at least controlled. This has to be done at individual level and one should not expect the other to do it. Pollution is often unnecessary and can be avoided very often, such as the times when we play music at home. Very often we play it very loud instead of just loud enough for the family to hear it. Noise pollution damages the hearing ability of people and yet we do it so recklessly.

Air Pollution:

Air is one of the most important elements of our environment for our survival. It is a natural gift and a free asset. It is polluted in many ways. Land vehicles use oil and fuel which create smoke. The smoke gets mixed with air and thus pollutes air. Mills, factories and industries are also held responsible for air pollution because they create smoke. Polluted air contains CO2, CO, NO2, SMP, SO2 and oxides of lead. Excessive rise of gases and chemical pollute air. People are to breathe and inhale polluted air in most cases.

Water Pollution:

Water is also one of the survival elements for the living beings. Water is polluted by the garbage of mills, factories and industries in most cases. Sometime, farmers use insecticide and fertilizers excessively. The drinking of this polluted water is detrimental to life and health.

Food Pollution:

Most Food and snacks ready for sale at the pavement, street corner alongside the road are uncovered and dirty. They are cooked with polluted air. People are tempted to eat and taste them because of their habit and greed. These unhygienic foods are also harmful for our health.

Sound Pollution: Sound pollution is very common to all. The noise of vehicles, mills, factories, industries are really boring and unbearable. This also causes dull of hearing, headache, mental agony, tension, mental imbalance and migraine.

To fight against these pollutions, we must ensure some steps. We must stop polluting the air by smoke. For that, we have to reduce the amount of petrol driven cars and vehicles on the road. If possible, we should have to avoid lead oxide. We must plant more and more tree. We should cultivate fresh vegetables so that we can reduce food pollution. We should not hear songs with a loud volume on the sound box. We should also stop the mill, factory or industry owners to build these in the city. These should be made in a planned way.

We find everyone everywhere talking about pollution pollution of air, water, food and everything. When we try to study this problem of pollution we find that we ourselves are responsible for causing this pollution. People, in general, do not take care to keep their surroundings clear and this leads to general pollution. And this pollution causes ill-health and give rise to so many health problems.

Recently there has been a drive to convert the buses and the three-wheelers running in Delhi from diesel driven to CNG. Why was this large scale change found necessary? The reason was that with the ise in the population, the number of buses and three-wheelers also increased. The diesel-driven buses and three-wheelers emit smoke which goes into the atmosphere and the air. This smoke contains very unhealthy gases. People breathe this air. The result is that their lungs inhale these polluted gases within which causes so many lung diseases even leading to bronchitis, asthma and tuberculosis. The rise in these diseases led the government to think and this led to this policy of converting these vehicles into CNG.

Ever since this has been done the proportion of air pollution has largely decreased.

Yamuna Then there is water pollution. The water we drink is lifted from the rivers, stored and then sent to us through pipe lines. What is happening to these rivers? Those rivers which used to be called our ‘holy’ rivers Ganga and receive all the sewage from the city drains and so large a quantity of this sewage is that the river is not able to carry it away. The river water gets all polluted with all the filth that falls into it and it is this water that is pumped to the city’s water-tanks. Even the underground water is becoming polluted as the filth and garbage over the earth seeps down when it rains and the underground water also gets polluted. All the lakes, ponds and even the wells of today contain polluted water. The large scale industries which are growing in large numbers to meet the demands of the growing population send out effluents which fall in the rivers, lakes and ponds and make their water unworthy of drinking.

People are cutting down trees. This is because, more population, more need of fuel and timber. Trees emit oxygen by day which purifies the atmosphere loss of trees means loss of the healthy gas. oxygen Even too much use of fertilizers and pesticides in our farming process is also a cause of atmospheric pollution.

As we go around a town we find big heaps of garbage with all the rotting material. All this has been heaped by we are responsible for it. But this rotting sends up gases which mix in the air and pollute the atmosphere. We get rid of the garbage from our homes but make the whole neighbourhood polluted. The civic sense is lacking the civic authorities also are not able to make proper arrangement of garbage disposal.

Even the plastic bags, so much in use these days, are a cause of pollution as these are thrown away and do not get destroyed, but are recycled. The recycled plastic bags are very dangerous for health – any eatable kept in them turns unhealthy.

The growth of slums in big towns are a great source of pollution. People live in the most unhealthy surroundings, commit all sorts of nuisances and all this causes atmospheric pollution.

The problem of pollution is growing every day and is causing a risk to the population of the country.

What is necessary is that not only the administration but people in general must understand the gravity of this problem and each one should do his best to keep the atmosphere clean. Plant more trees; dispose off the garbage in the proper way. Keep the rivers clean, do not allow unhealthy ways of life to grow it is each and every man’s job to save the country from pollution.

Whenever man tried to progress and advance further, pollution inevitably took place. It has een seen that man always had to pay very dearly when he made some progress. The more man advanced towards development, the more pollution problems arose. Pollution can be in soil, water, air, noise etc. All types of pollution tell upon the health. The environmental pollution has even threatened humanity. This progress has been achieved by man through the scientific and technological methods. Many factories and mills were established for this purpose and all the natural resources were utilised for development.

Man began to cut down the trees. Forests were cleared and on those places new factories, mills were established. But man did not plant new trees in place of those trees. The chimneys of the factories began to emit out smoke. This polluted the air. This smoke was harmful not only for man but for natural vegetation also. Trees stopped growing. The means of transport increased and they added greatly to air pollution and noise pollution. The cars, buses, scooters and other vehicles exhaust so much polluted smoke, that it has become nearly impossible to lead a healthy life in the cities. The noise of machinery and other vehicles affect the ears and it has brought deafness to lakhs of people.

Many factories throw their waste material into the nearby rivers thus polluting the water. The fish and other water creatures can not, survive in that polluted water.

Apart from this, there is soil pollution. Many chemicals and pesticides are harmful for health. With the use of these things some types of vegetation and life have even become extinct from the earth. This soil pollution contaminates the river water through rainfall.

Today we are living in an age of pollution. Everything around us is polluted but the most dangerous type of pollution today is environmental pollution. This is the worst danger that man faces today. The fallout from nuclear testing has increased the incidence of cancer. The environmental pollution has endangered the very existence of all forms of lives including that of man.

The first step to check this pollution is that population growth should be checked. Natural resources should be redeveloped. The factories should adopt strict pollution control measures. The vehicles too should get their machinery checked regularly so that they may not exhaust much smoke. Deforestation should be totally stopped. All these measures will help mankind to fight pollution.

How lifestyle and air pollution patterns affect mortality

A recent BMC Public Health journal study investigates the effects of air pollution and lifestyle factors on mortality.

The crucial role of lifestyle choices on health and well-being

Lifestyle factors such as physical activity, sleep, dietary habits, nicotine exposure, and body mass index (BMI) are crucial to combat the economic and medical implications associated with many diseases.

Previous studies have highlighted that physical inactivity, poor diet, heavy alcohol consumption, and smoking contribute to 60% of premature mortality. These unhealthy lifestyle factors also increase the risk of coronary heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and diabetes; therefore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for improving the overall quality of life.

Ambient air pollution is closely linked to human health. In fact, one 2018 report indicated that 6% of global deaths were attributed to ambient air pollution. Although humans are exposed to multiple air pollutants simultaneously, most studies have investigated the impact of individual air pollutants on mortality risks.

It is imperative to understand the combined relationship between lifestyle factors, air pollution, and all-cause mortality. Furthermore, more evidence is needed to elucidate how interactions between lifestyles and air pollution impact health.

About the study

The current population-based prospective cohort study was conducted to assess the potential association between various lifestyle factors, air pollutants including particulate matter (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , PM 2.5−10 ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and all-cause mortality risk.

The United Kingdom Biobank data were used to obtain genetic and health information for over 500,000 people between 37 and 73 years of age. For the current study, 271,075 U.K. Biobank participants fulfilled all eligibility criteria.

At baseline, information on five different lifestyle factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diet, and sleep, was obtained. The Land Use Regression (LUR) models, which were developed from the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects projects, were used to estimate annual average PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and PM 2.5−10  and NOx. Data on mortality rates were obtained from the National Health Service (NHS) Information Center for England and Wales and the NHS Central Register for Scotland.

Study findings

Healthy lifestyles were associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality, whereas higher exposure to NOx, PM 2.5 , and PM 10 was positively correlated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. The strength of the association between unhealthy lifestyles and mortality risk differed across air pollution subgroups, with a stronger association observed in subgroups with lower air pollution levels.

Approximately 23% of the study participants had an unhealthy lifestyle, 61% followed a general lifestyle, and 16% had a healthy lifestyle. The mean age of the participants with a healthy lifestyle was 56 years, most of whom were White and male.  

Among the air pollutants, PM 2.5 was robustly associated with mortality, possibly due to its small size and ability to remain suspended in the atmosphere for prolonged periods, causing lung damage. Particulate matter also absorbs toxic substances from the air and penetrates the lungs.

PM 10 primarily contains natural elements instead of heavy metals and is relatively less toxic than PM 2.5 . However, the combined exposure to multiple air pollutants was associated with a greater impact than individual exposure.

Consistent with previous reports, the study findings emphasize that good sleep quality, sufficient physical activity, non-smoking, and a healthy diet could positively reduce mortality rates. Among different lifestyle factors, smoking was most strongly associated with mortality, which could be attributed to the fact that nicotine exposure increases inflammation and induces oxidative stress.

Alcohol consumption was not significantly correlated with all-cause mortality. This finding contradicts a previous study that revealed moderate drinking is healthier than non-drinking because wine contains biologically active compounds like anthocyanins and resveratrol that reduce oxidative stress and regulate lipid metabolism. Considering the contradictory findings, more research is needed to better understand the association between alcohol consumption and mortality risks.

Conclusions

Multiple lifestyle factors have a synergistic protective effect on mortality risks; therefore, it is important to maintain a variety of lifestyle factors to promote good health. Conversely, extensive research has documented a cumulative adverse impact of multiple air pollutants on mortality.

The association between mortality risk and unhealthy lifestyles became more significant as the density of air pollution reduced from high to low. These findings emphasize the importance of well-coordinated measures to improve air quality and adopt a healthy lifestyle, which should minimize mortality risk.

The main limitations of the current study include the potential presence of measurement errors and the existence of additional behavioral factors that were not considered. Data were also unavailable to study the effects of ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide exposure on mortality risk. Resid confounding may have also impacted the results despite controlling for multiple covariates.

Hillary Clinton: I’ve Debated Trump and Biden. Here’s What I’m Watching For.

Last week I had the time of my life at the Tony Awards introducing a song from “Suffs,” the Broadway musical I co-produced about the suffragists who won women the right to vote. I was thrilled when the show took home the awards for best original score and best book.

From “Suffs” to “Hamilton,” I love theater about politics. But not the other way around. Too often we approach pivotal moments like this week’s debate between President Biden and Donald Trump like drama critics. We’re picking a president, not the best actor.

I am the only person to have debated both men (Mr. Trump in 2016 and, in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary race, Mr. Biden). I know the excruciating pressure of walking onto that stage and that it is nearly impossible to focus on substance when Mr. Trump is involved. In our three debates in 2016, he unleashed a blizzard of interruptions, insults and lies that overwhelmed the moderators and did a disservice to the voters who tuned in to learn about our visions for the country — including a record 84 million viewers for our first debate.

It is a waste of time to try to refute Mr. Trump’s arguments like in a normal debate. It’s nearly impossible to identify what his arguments even are. He starts with nonsense and then digresses into blather. This has gotten only worse in the years since we debated. I was not surprised that after a recent meeting, several chief executives said that Mr. Trump, as one journalist described it, “could not keep a straight thought” and was “all over the map.” Yet expectations for him are so low that if he doesn’t literally light himself on fire on Thursday evening, some will say he was downright presidential.

Mr. Trump may rant and rave in part because he wants to avoid giving straight answers about his unpopular positions, like restrictions on abortion, giving tax breaks to billionaires and selling out our planet to big oil companies in return for campaign donations. He interrupts and bullies — he even stalked me around the stage at one point — because he wants to appear dominant and throw his opponent off balance.

These ploys will fall flat if Mr. Biden is as direct and forceful as he was when engaging Republican hecklers at the State of the Union address in March. The president also has facts and truth on his side. He led America’s comeback from a historic health and economic crisis, with more than 15 million jobs created so far, incomes for working families rising, inflation slowing and investments in clean energy and advanced manufacturing soaring. He’ll win if that story comes through.
