For developing countries, and especially the Least Developed Countries, PhD scientists help build a foundation for scientific strength and human prosperity. TWAS offers between 100 - 160 PhD fellowships a year at some of the most respected institutions in the developing world. These fellowships are hosted in Brazil, China, India, Pakistan and South Africa.

Before applying:

• Applications can only be submitted via the online portal once the call is open.
• Please use the "Apply now" button at the bottom of each programme page to start your application once the call is open.
• Both the opening and closing dates will be mentioned on each individual programme page.
• Applicants are encouraged to apply for the preliminary acceptance letter as early as possible, even before the opening date of the call. Only Acceptance letters dated the same year as the year of application are eligible.
• Please be advised that applicants may apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio. Applicants will not be eligible to visit another institution in that year under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes. One exception: The head of an institution who invites an external scholar to share his/her expertise under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes may still apply for another programme.

The Lahore University of Management Sciences, (LUMS), Pakistan — and TWAS offer fellowships to young scientists from developing countries (other than Pakistan) who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in Natural Sciences and Engineering.

According to an agreement between the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS/UNESCO) for the advancement of science in developing countries, up to 40 students/scholars from developing countries will be sponsored to study in China for doctoral degrees for up to 4 years

Türkiye Scholarships is a government-funded, competitive scholarship program, awarded to outstanding students to pursue full-time or short-term program at the top universities in Turkey. Applications will be open to applicants who wish to study at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.

The normal duration of award is:

Scholarships at Koç University for international students

Koç University prides itself in offering scholarship packages for high-caliber international and domestic undergraduate and graduate students that meet our selective admissions criteria.

Undergraduate International Scholarships

Koç University awards merit-based tuition scholarships of 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% to outstanding candidates each year (except for Medicine).  There is no separate application period or scholarship form. All candidates will be informed if they have been awarded a scholarship or not with their admission offer. To be considered for a merit-based scholarship please keep the following information in mind before submitting your application:

• Submitting an application without one of the required exam scores (SAT/ACT, IB, A-Levels, or others) significantly diminishes your admission chances and therefore your scholarship chances. You can see the list of eligible exam scores here .
• All admitted students are first evaluated for a merit-based scholarship by the Admissions Committee on the basis of academic merit only (need-blind). These scholarships can be awarded for 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of the annual tuition for the duration of the program. Merit-based scholarships do not include any other benefits (housing, living expenses, books, etc).
• The School of Medicine does NOT award any type of merit or need-based scholarships for admitted international students. You should carefully consider before applying if you are able to fund your Medicine studies without a scholarship.
• Scholarship results are communicated to candidates with the admission offer letter from our Registrar’s Office via email on the dates indicated here .

Graduate International Scholarships (Master with Thesis/Research Masters)

To be considered for a scholarship:

• Complete and submit the online application form for your Master with Thesis program of interest with all the required documents (this includes a valid GRE/GMAT and TOEFL test score). There are NO SEPARATE SCHOLARSHIP FORMS. Graduate program applications are available here .
• Submitting an application without the required exam scores (GRE/GMAT, TOEFL) significantly diminishes your admission chances and therefore your scholarship chances.
• All admitted Master with Thesis students are awarded 100% merit-based scholarships by the relevant Graduate School (except for the Graduate School of Health Sciences). Merit-based scholarships may also include other benefits (living expenses, health insurance) depending on the Graduate School. Please note that the LLM with Thesis program is not included in this category.
• Scholarship results are communicated to candidates with the admission offer letter from the relevant Graduate School via email on the dates indicated on their respective websites under “Admission”.

Graduate International Scholarships (Master without Thesis/Taught Masters)

Professional master’s programs (Master without Thesis) at Koç University in the fields of Data Science, Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering, LLM, Public Policy, Global Health, MBA, EMBA, Finance, and others, are offered on an affordable tuition-paying basis to both domestic and international students. There are no tuition scholarships for these programs.

If you need the scholarship to pursue your graduate studies we recommend that you prepare and submit an application to our Master with Thesis programs instead.

The Turkish Government’s Turkish Scholarships (Türkiye Bursları) program at Koç University does NOT include support for Master Non-Thesis programs.

Graduate International Scholarships (Ph.D./Doctoral)

Koç University offers all Ph.D. domestic and international admitted students a full scholarship for the duration of their studies. Admission to our Ph.D. programs is very competitive due to the very large number of qualified applicants. Doctoral Program in Civilization Studies, minimum application requirements :

- Passport Credentials Page

- Residency Permit / İkamet (if available)

- CV / Résumé (In addition to the written statement, you are asked to introduce yourself in English with a 1-3 minute video and talk about your academic interests. The video can be attached to the CV file as a drive link.)

- Documentation of English Proficiency (see language requirements for details)

- Scores from GRE and/or ALES or similar tests for graduate study are strongly encouraged but not required for application.

- Copies of all undergraduate and graduate diplomas and transcripts

• Applicants to the PhD Program must have a graduate diploma with a minimum GPA greater than ≥ 3.00/4.00 or 76.66/100 ,
• Admitted students , still enrolled at an undergraduate or graduate institution by the application deadline, must complete their undergraduate or graduate degree by the time of enrollment. They must submit their most recent original diploma for enrollment ; otherwise, they will lose all earned rights.

* Documents are accepted only in Turkish, Arabic, German, English and French; other languages must be translated either into English or Turkish. (Document originals and official translations into Turkish must be presented at enrollment.)

- Two academic letters of recommendation (the recommenders you add on the application system will receive requests to upload letters of recommendation on your behalf.)

- A Statement of Purpose (single-spaced, two pages max,  English )

- A writing sample * ( PhD applicants MUST provide an English writing sample , such as a part of their master’s/honors thesis, an article or a paper. 20 pgs max.)

Admission English Language Requirements :

• Proficiency in English is a prerequisite for acceptance at the Alliance of Civilizations Institute . Priority will be given to those students, who present higher TOEFL or equivalent scores. A minimum score of 84 in TOEFL-iBT or an equivalent score in CAE, CPE, PTE Academic or YDS is highly advised for application.
• For the English language proficiency requirement, applicants may submit the official results of any exam that is recognized as equivalent to YDS by YÖK (Turkish Council of Higher Education). For a list of the recognized exams please see:  https://dokuman.osym.gov. tr/pdfdokuman/2021/GENEL/ esdegerlikdokuman06042021.pdf  

Exceptions:

– Native English speakers and applicants with a bachelor’s degree (min. 3-year program) from an accredited and recognized institution of tertiary education in an English-speaking country (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) are not required to take any English proficiency examination.

- Successful applicants, who for country-specific reasons are not able to take an accepted English proficiency examination, MUST present their scores from one before official enrollment in the fall semester. Failure to do so will result in admission offer cancellation.

PRE-PROGRAM LANGUAGE PREPARATION:

Students at ACI are obliged to attain proficiency in Turkish and Arabic by the time of their graduation. Proficiency in English is a prerequisite for admission as described in our application requirements. The best candidates for admission apply with a good command of these three main languages. Students without a good command of Turkish and/or Arabic will have to complete the scientific preparation year program before the start of their degree courses. International students will have to prove a minimum of A-2 level proficiency in Arabic and C-1 level in Turkish in order to be able to graduate. Turkish citizens may receive preparatory Arabic instruction and register for a single graduate course in this preparatory year.  We do not offer an English preparatory year program . The students, who fail in the scientific preparation year program will have their enrollment annulled.

All prep-year language classes are offered at the  School of Languages  at IHU’s Main Campus in Başakşehir.

Program Duration :

- The duration of the Doctoral Program in Civilization Studies is four years. Students, who are not proficient in Turkish (minimum C-1 Level), must complete an additional one-year Turkish preparatory coursework to pass the required Turkish proficiency examination.

FINANCIAL AID :

Scholarships and Tuition Fee

All students are accepted with different variations of scholarships towards the tuition fee.

The Doctoral Program tuition fee is 16000 USD.

Successful applicants will be offered positions as Research Assistants and/or Teaching Assistants on top of exemption from tuition fees. Students meeting the highest standards of academic excellence and language competence will be awarded with a monthly scholarship. The scholarship amount is 12.600-18.000 TL for the Ph.D. Program for the 2024-2025 Academic Year. You may refer to the  IHU Directive for Graduate Scholarships  for detailed information.

PhD scholarships cover the Turkish and Arabic language preparatory period (maximum one academic year) and the duration of the four-year-long doctorate program.

Scholarships are for nine months per year; they do not cover the summer period.

Married students and/or PhD candidates, who passed their comprehensive exams, will be eligible for summer stipends. In toto, they will receive stipends for 12 months each year.

Scholarships and assistantships awarded are subject to renewal annually.

In case of academic failure, scholarships are subject to review and cancellation by the academic evaluation committee.

Graduate Programs Scholarship Opportunities

100 % or 50 % tuition fee scholarship opportunities are available for new students from Turkey and other international students in the PhD programs.

100 % and 50% tuition fee scholarship is available for new students from Turkey and 50% tuition fee scholarship is available for other international students in the Master’s programs.

Application for Scholarship

Students who will enroll in their respective programs for the first time  may apply for scholarship opportunities. (Students who terminate (or dismissed)  their registration and re-apply can not get scholarship)

The applications are made during the online program application. Applications are accepted from prospective students twice a year for Fall and Spring semesters.   

Online application to graduate programs

International students can apply for 100% and 50% scholarships for PhD programs and 50 % scholarship in Master’s programs.

Turkish Republic citizens can apply for 100% and 50% scholarships for Master’s and PhD programs.

Students who have registered with special or visiting student status are not eligible to receive this scholarship.

Evaluation Criteria

International and TR national  PhD program candidates

Minimum requirement: 

• To be graduated with a minimum  3.00 (out of 4.00) CGPA  or equivalent  from an undergraduate degree program
• To be graduated between 2.75 - 2.99 CGPA out of 4.00 from an undergraduate degree program  or equivalent and have relevant ALES score of 65 or higher (for Turkish citizens) or have minimum CGPA of 3.50 out of 4.00 or equivalent from a Graduate (Master's) Program graduation.    

The departments will rank the applicants based on their departmental assessment criteria (not only CGPA). The department may grant one 100% and one 50% scholarships or three 50% scholarship.

The shortlisted candidates are announced as scheduled in the Scholarship Calendar  The shortlisted candidates are required to complete their registration by the working hours of the given deadline date. Otherwise, new candidates may replace their names in the second list. 

Students, whose name appeared in the second scholarship list and could not complete their regsitration by the deadline due to compelling reasons (i.e. visa, transportation issues, etc.) may appeal to the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research before the deadline, to have extension upon receiving approval for their petition. 

Scholarship is not given to students who was once registered in the same level of program of Eastern Mediterranean University and re-apply.   The scholarship of the student is cancelled if such an action is detected. 

TR national  master’s program candidates

The evaluation criteria for TR national master’s program candidates will be as follows:

Minimum requirement to be considered for 100% and 50% scholarship is 3.00 (out of 4.00) or higher undergraduate graduation CGPA .

• To be graduated with a minimum 3.00 (out of 4.00) CGPA or equivalent from an undergraduate degree program
• To be graduated between 2.75 - 2.99 CGPA out of 4.00 from an undergraduate degree program or equivalent and have a relevant ALES score of 65 or higher for thesis programs or to have ALES minimum score of 65 from any type, for non-thesis programs. 

The departments will rank the applicants based on their departmental assessment criteria (not only CGPA). The department may grant one 100% and one 50% scholarships  or  three 50% scholarship.

The shortlisted candidates are announced as scheduled in the  Scholarship Calendar  The shortlisted candidates are required to complete their registration by the working hours of the given deadline date. Otherwise, new candidates may replace their names in the second list. 

Scholarship is not given to students who terminate their registration with the University and re-apply in order to get scholarship. The scholarship of the student is cancelled if such a behaviour is detected.

International master’s program candidates

The 50% scholarships for international students who will enroll in a master’s program will be announced after the acceptance decision is made to the program. This scholarship information will appear in the letter of acceptance for the program.

Category ' E' Research Assistant Position : In accordance with Article 4(5) of the ‘Research Assistant Appointment and Postgraduate Scholarship Regulations’, students who are granted with 100% scholarship are appointed as ‘Category E Research Assistant’. These students are expected to undertake duties for at least 6 hours per week at academic units or, if deemed necessary, administrative units.

In cases, where the student is appointed from other research assistant category position, he/she can keep 100% scholarship (Category E research assistant position) until he/she resigns, on the condition that he/she still satisfies the continuation of the %100 scholarship.

Students who are granted with 50% scholarship are not assigned as Category E Research assistant. In cases, where the student is also appointed as part-time research assistant, he/she has to choose one of the scholarships.

Conditions for the Continuation of the Scholarship

The period of scholarship is four semesters in master’s programs and ten semesters in PhD programs during the normal period of the program. A student’s part time or full time status does not affect the period of scholarship. Semesters of extensions and freezing of registration are excluded from the scope of the scholarship. Fees for freezing registration are covered by the student.

Semesters spent in the scientific preparation program and/or English support program are included in the normal period of scholarship, on the condition the maximum period of one year has not been exceeded.

Conditions for the Cancellation / Termination of Scholarship

(a) requirements of a scholarship/discount not being fulfilled, (b) cancelling registration from the University or failing to renew one’s registration, (c) engaging oneself in an action that is accepted as a disciplinary offense which results in the termination of the scholarship/discount.

The Turkish government will award grants for undergraduate and graduate studies or research to outstanding students of any nationality.

Who can apply for the scholarships?

Students who wish to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies or research at any of the Turkish universities included in the Türkiye Scholarship Program.  Fields of study include engineering, health, social sciences, natural sciences, humanities and fine arts. Interested students may access the study programs offered at each level of education, depending on students' educational background, by using the search engine on the following page: https://www.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr/ScholarshipSearch.

What do the scholarships include?

Scholarships include:

• placement and admission into an undergraduate or graduate university program
• tuition fees
• a monthly stipend that varies according to the level of study (1,700 Turkish Liras (TL) for undergraduate studies; 2,400 TL - master's studies; 3,000 TL - doctoral studies; and 8,000 TL - research)
• accommodation
• medical insurance
• round-trip airfare between the host university and the grantee's home country
• Turkish language course

Application deadline : January 10 to February 20, 2024.

Requirements:

• For undergraduate studies: to be under 21 years of age and to have passed at least 70% of the credits enrolled in the previous academic year.
• For master's degree studies: to be under 30 years of age and to have passed at least 75% of the credits enrolled in the previous academic year.
• For doctoral studies: to be under 35 years of age and to have passed at least 75% of the credits enrolled in the previous year.
• For research: to be under 50 years of age.

• Valid identification document
• Valid passport
• A recent photo
• National exam results, if available
• Diploma or provisional study certificate
• Transcript of academic studies
• International exam results, (if required by the chosen program)

Eligibility Criteria of the Turkey Burslari Scholarships 2023:

• Students who wish to study in Turkey under the Turkish Government Scholarship 2024 must meet the following criteria.

Eligible Countries:

• Applicants from all countries are eligible to apply for Turkey Scholarships
• You may apply if you have completed your graduation or if it will be completed before August 2023.
• You should not be enrolled in any Turkish university at the time of application.

Age Criteria:

• You must be under the age of 21 to enroll in an undergraduate program,
• You must be under the age of 30 to enroll in the Master’s program.
• You must be under 35 to enroll in Doctorate program.

The minimum academic achievement:

• Students applying for bachelor’s degrees: 70%
• Applicants for master’s and doctoral degrees: 75%
• Applicants for the health sciences, including medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, should have a minimum academic record of 90%.

• You should have a TOEFL or IELTS (The Test of English as a Foreign Language) certification.
• The certification is an international benchmark that shows that you are good enough to take a course at a university if you want to study English.
• You need to provide a letter stating your purpose in taking this scholarship program.
• Applicants should not have any health problems.
• Short-term scholarship programs may have additional application requirements

What are the steps to apply for the Turkey Scholarships 2024?

• Check the eligibility requirements:  Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements for the scholarship.
• Create an account:  Go to the Turkey Scholarships official website and create an account by clicking on the “Sign Up” button. You will need to provide your personal information and create a password to complete the registration process.
• Start the online application:  Once you have created an account, click on the “Application” tab and select the scholarship you wish to apply for. Then click on the “Apply” button to begin the online application process.

Mevlana exchange program.

The Mevlana Exchange Program is a program that enables student exchange between universities in Türkiye and universities abroad. Unlike other exchange programs, the Mevlana Exchange Program covers all higher education institutions that have signed the Protocol without any geographical region restrictions.

Farabi Exchange Program

The Farabi Exchange Program is a domestic exchange program that aims to allow students to study at a different university other than their own university for one or two semesters. Non-refundable grants are provided by YÖK to the students participating in the exchange. Thanks to this program, you can study in a second city in Türkiye as an exchange student and have the opportunity to get to know Türkiye better.

Countries and periods of exchange may vary according to the protocols signed by the universities. Please consult your university for detailed information and applications.

Students with a Türkiye Scholarship can participate in exchange programs only for 1 semester.

Our students must give notice together with their documents of admission to the Directocate within 15 days after receiving admission to the exchange program.

Please make sure that you will not have a semester loss because the semester in which you participate in the exchange program will be counted towards the scholarship period.
