PhD students in lecture hall

The PhD in Leadership has been recognized as one of the top online doctorate programs in organizational leadership degree programs in 2024 by Intelligent.com . The program is designed to provide advanced capabilities for scholars and practitioners alike in an area of immense interest in contemporary society. It is well recognized that organizational success or failure is closely connected to leadership. However, there is debate about what constitutes good leadership and how much it may vary depending upon the context or domain within which it is practiced. Similarly, there are a variety of mechanisms currently being employed to identify good leaders and to assist those in leadership roles to become better leaders with varying degrees of success.

Students in the program will be exposed to advanced bodies of knowledge in the attributes essential to good leadership and in the processes likely to identify and develop it. They will also gain a mastery of leadership theories and practices applicable to an array of professional contexts. In addition, students will learn advanced research methods both qualitative and quantitative, and progress to completing a dissertation that produces original scholarship.

The program can be completed with a concentration (area of focus) or otherwise. Students can choose to specialize in an area by completing 9 credits of coursework in that area. Concentrations are available in the following areas: Ministry ; Justice ; Technology ; Politics ; Healthcare Administration ; International Relations ; Sociology ; Communications ; Business ; Public Administration . Those who are not interested in a concentration can complete the program by choosing courses from diverse areas without being limited to any one area. Students who opt for a concentration must complete their dissertation in a topic that fits within the concentration after approval by their chair. Students who choose not to do a concentration can write their dissertation in any aspect of leadership after appropriate consultation and approval by their dissertation chair.

  • Synthesize, evaluate, and contextualize leadership approaches and theories
  • Choose and create an original, scholarly research project culminating in a written, presented, and orally defended dissertation that advances leadership theories and contributes substantively to the body of knowledge in the student's chosen concentration
  • Demonstrate a high level of comprehension of leadership theory through practical individual and organizational application
  • Analyze social, political, economic, religious, and organizational events relative to the influence of leaders and leadership approaches
  • Integrate scholarly research and leadership skills by putting theory into practice

America needs transformative leaders in preK–12 education whose passion for education quality and equity is matched by a knowledge of learning and development, the organizational management skills to translate visionary ideas into practical success, and a firm grasp of the role of context and politics in shaping leadership. Graduates of the three-year, multidisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education will be prepared to become those leaders.

The Ed.L.D Program — taught by faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School — will train you for system-level leadership positions in school systems, state and federal departments of education, and national nonprofit organizations. Ed.L.D. is a full-time, three-year program built on a cohort learning model. Cohorts consist of up to 25 students from diverse professional backgrounds (including district/charter management leaders, nonprofit directors, principals, teachers, and policy researchers) who progress through the program together.

All Ed.L.D. students receive a full tuition funding package plus stipends, work opportunities, and a paid third-year residency at a partner organization.

The Ed.L.D. Program prepares graduates to do work for the public good in the American public education sector, whether that be at the system or state level. Specifically, the program is designed to accelerate the progress graduates make toward achieving meaningful impact in influential roles and/or crossing boundaries in the following spaces in the public education sector:

  • PreK–12 district or CMO leadership roles : superintendent of schools, chief academic officer, and/or deputy superintendent
  • Foundation/philanthropy roles:  director, president and CEO, senior fellow
  • Education nonprofit roles : president or executive director of backbone or collective impact organizations which support preK–12 schools. Ed.L.D. graduates will lead education nonprofits that explicitly focus on improving outcomes and opportunities for children, families, and communities.
  • State or federal education leadership roles : commissioner or deputy commissioner roles. Could also include public education advocacy or education policy advisers to senior government officials.
  • Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation roles:  Founder, CEO, president

Curriculum Information

The Ed.L.D. curriculum is a balance of multidisciplinary coursework and practice-based learning. Core courses and electives are taught by recognized leaders from across Harvard’s graduate programs in fields like data-based education reform, organizational change and innovation, and effective leadership strategies for urban schools. You will develop and test your leadership skills through team projects and an immersive third-year residency.

All students in the cohort take the same classes in four foundational content areas: learning and teaching, leadership and organizational change, politics and policy, adult development, and leadership inside and out (including one-on-one executive coaching). Courses taken during the first-year focus on practice-based learning and serve as the framework of your first-year experience.

Each cohort member works with program advisers to choose an individualized sequence of electives from any of the Harvard graduate schools. You will work closely with the program faculty and staff during your second year to determine the best match with a partner organization for your third-year residency. Matches are driven by mutual interest between the resident and the partner organization, and each student's career and learning goals and geographic preferences.

  • Second Year Practicing Leadership Inside and Out
  • Driving Change
  • Education Sector Nonprofits
  • Negotiation Workshop
  • Coaching with Equity in Mind

You will take part in a 10-month paid residency at one of our partner organizations. There, you will work on a strategic project which synthesizes your experience and learning into a written Capstone project. You will stay connected to your Ed.L.D. cohort and HGSE through technology and by returning to Harvard periodically for intensive workshops.

Paid Residency

Our partner organizations include school systems and departments of education, as well as some of the nation's most influential and dynamic nonprofit, mission-based for-profit, and philanthropic organizations.

You will be intentionally pushed out of your comfort zones and asked to work systemically and make a significant contribution to the partner organization. In addition, the residency will provide you with the professional mentoring, practical experiences, and network of connections they need to position themselves as future leaders in the education sector.

Strategic Project

You will define (with supervisors from your partner organization) a strategic project on which to focus. You will have the opportunity to lead one or two major efforts on behalf of the organization, such as the creation or implementation of current initiatives. The project allows you to practice and improve leadership skills, add important value to the mission and strategy of the partner organization, work systemically, and hold high-level accountability.

During the residency period, you will produce a written Capstone. The Capstone is a descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of your third-year leadership contributions to a strategic project within an Ed.L.D. partner organization. It is a demonstration of your ability to engage others, develop strategy to successfully address and diagnose challenges, work toward a vision and goals, and learn from the results.

phd in leadership programs

Solving problems means challenging preconceptions.

Transformative change can result when you allow your point of view to be questioned. So, one of the best ways to develop knowledge, skills, new approaches, and solutions is to work with others — people across all sectors who will challenge you with differing perspectives.

We bring together students and instructors from inside and outside the scope of traditional education to push you to think differently and to ask tough questions.

When you intentionally gather people from different personal and professional backgrounds to collaborate, something powerful occurs: change happens. It’s how to build new processes, solutions, policies, and powerful new tools — and how to create visionary leaders.

We believe leaders are learners, and that education is essential to great leadership.

The NYU EdD is a rigorous online doctorate degree program that combines the discipline of a top-tier university with an innovative approach to education and leadership. We offer accessibility through enhanced technology and the personal connection of face-to-face instruction.

We examine the most important issues leaders in education and learning face today and discover solutions that make change possible for tomorrow. We apply an academic lens to myriad sectors so students graduate from the doctoral program in education with the core competencies for impactful director and executive-level career options.

The research, analysis, writing, and critical thinking involved in students’ strategic design and implementation of a change management project are assets that students will bring to current and future employers.

Best Online Doctorate In Organizational Leadership Of 2024

Doug Wintemute

Updated: Mar 5, 2024, 3:11pm

Leadership influences the decisions, direction and culture within an organization. Leaders determine how their organizations change, evolve and succeed over time.

With a doctorate in organizational leadership, you’ll hold the highest degree available in the field. Organizational leadership studies the potential impacts of leadership and the strategies that can take an organization to new heights.

A doctorate in organizational leadership typically comes in two forms: a research-driven Ph.D. or a practice-focused Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). In this guide, we examine both types of doctoral degrees and help you choose between them. We also rank the top 10 online doctorates in organizational leadership across the country and highlight what makes each special.

Why You Can Trust Forbes Advisor Education

Forbes Advisor’s education editors are committed to producing unbiased rankings and informative articles covering online colleges, tech bootcamps and career paths. Our ranking methodologies use data from the National Center for Education Statistics , education providers, and reputable educational and professional organizations. An advisory board of educators and other subject matter experts reviews and verifies our content to bring you trustworthy, up-to-date information. • Only 7.12% of all colleges, universities and bootcamp providers we consider are awarded

Our Methodology

We ranked 60 accredited, nonprofit colleges offering online doctorates in organizational leadership in the U.S. using 15 data points in the categories of credibility, affordability, student outcomes and student experience. We pulled data for these categories from reliable resources such as the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System ; private, third-party data sources; and individual school and program websites.

Data is accurate as of June 2023. Note that because online doctorates are relatively uncommon, fewer schools meet our ranking standards at the doctoral level.

We scored schools based on the following metrics:

Student Outcomes :

  • Overall graduation rate
  • Median earnings 10 years after graduation

Affordability :

  • In-state graduate student tuition
  • In-state graduate student fees
  • Alternative tuition plans offered
  • Median federal student loan debt
  • Percentage of students in federal student loan deferment

Student Experience :

  • Student-to-faculty ratio
  • Socioeconomic diversity
  • Availability of online coursework
  • Total number of graduate assistants

An online doctorate in organizational leadership makes perfect sense for many students, but not everyone thrives in a virtual learning environment. But before you decide to attend online colleges , think about the following:

How do you learn best?

Online learning and on-campus programs feature the same material and award the same credentials but through different delivery formats. Online learning typically features less structure and interactivity. As a result, online students usually need better self-discipline and time management skills than on-campus students.

What are your scheduling needs?

Online organizational leadership degrees offer more flexible scheduling options than on-campus programs. Some classes run asynchronously, allowing you to study when you can while still meeting project deadlines. Other classes run synchronously with convenient evening or weekend schedules.

What’s your budget?

Online programs can help you save money on your education, particularly when it comes to travel and housing costs. The flexibility of online learning can also help you maintain a healthy work and school balance.

College accreditation comes in two major categories: institutional and programmatic. The accreditation process reviews schools and programs to provide quality assurance to prospective students and employers.

Institutional accreditation should be considered mandatory because it can impact your financial aid eligibility, transfer credits and employment opportunities. Look for a college accredited by an official accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the U.S. Department of Education.

The importance of programmatic accreditation, which validates educational quality in specific degree programs and departments, varies depending on your area of study. Programmatic accreditation is common among business programs, including doctoral programs in organizational leadership. A couple of the programs on our top-10 list hold accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

For this ranking, we evaluated 60 universities offering online doctoral degrees in organizational leadership; these degrees are common. Here’s how to narrow down your options:

Consider Your Future Goals

The right online doctorate in organizational leadership should help you meet your unique career goals. Before choosing a program, think about what you want to get from the program, such as practical field experience, mentorship or a professional network.

If you’re aiming for a research or teaching position, consider a Ph.D. in organizational leadership. If you want to advance your business career, consider a more practice-focused doctorate, such as an Ed.D. in organizational leadership.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Along with working out the scheduling and academic requirements of an online doctorate in organizational leadership, you should understand the financial investment required.

Among the programs on this list, total tuition averages approximately $54,100. Some universities offer graduate assistantships, fellowships and even fully funded Ph.D. programs to relieve some of the financial burden.

Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), which will help you qualify for federal loans and grants. Many scholarship programs also require candidates to complete the FAFSA for eligibility.

Should I get a doctorate in organizational leadership?

If your dream career includes teaching at the postsecondary level or leading and transforming an organization, a doctorate in organizational leadership could be the best choice. Compared to a business program with an operations focus, organizational leadership focuses more on leadership strategies.

What is an Ed.D. in organizational leadership?

An Ed.D. in organizational leadership delivers practical training for career-focused students. Compared to a research-based Ph.D., an Ed.D. typically takes a shorter time to complete as well.

Is organizational leadership a real degree?

Yes, a doctorate in organizational leadership is a real degree that explores leadership theories and strategies and their effects on organizations. As an academic discipline, organizational leadership is versatile and capable of preparing students to lead in many different organizations and industries.

How long does it take to get a doctorate in organizational leadership?

The length of a doctorate in organizational leadership depends on the program and degree type. Typically, doctorates take about three to five years to complete, with Ed.D. programs falling on the shorter end of the scale and Ph.D. programs on the longer end.

How long is a Ph.D. in organizational leadership?

A Ph.D. in organizational leadership usually takes about four to five years to complete, but that depends on the amount of time you take to complete your dissertation. While part-time studies will extend your time in school, applying for transfer credits or accelerating your courses will save you time.

Any PhD in a Business field should certainly be an important and fruitful investment. However, such an advanced degree in Financial Management can open unique doors in specialized companies. The PhD program offers students the highest degree of scholarship with coursework that challenges them to think about specializations within organizational leadership. Many PhD programs require 30% or more course credits to graduate, and you have to prove a dissertation to show your research and in-depth knowledge of your specialization.

You can earn any of the following degrees:

  • PhD in Non-Profit Management
  • PhD in Special Education Leadership
  • PhD in Education – Leadership, Policy and Change
  • PhD in Education – Adult Education Leadership
  • PhD in Education – Community College Leadership
  • PhD in Education – K-12 Education Leadership

Students who earn a PhD will likely go on to work in education as a professor, or they may become consultants or human resource directors. There are many opportunities within the field for those who have a PhD, but typically, students will head into research rather than move into the field.

Opting for a PhD also means that you have completed the required coursework and achieved a higher GPA to get into the program. There are typically 60 or more credit hours required to complete a PhD leadership program. Students typically need at least a 3.0 GPA to qualify as a candidate for a PhD.

Some specializations include business administration, healthcare administration, education, human resources, mission leadership, entrepreneurial leadership, and higher education roles.

DBA in Leadership Programs

employees doing strategic planning

For those who want to enhance their business administration skills and advance to executive management roles, a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) may be a good degree option. A DBA can help students learn about strategic planning, statistical approaches to business, financial accounting, supervision theory, and creative management.

The key to a DBA is your specialization. You may be thinking about entrepreneurship or perhaps you want to go into executive leadership. Your coursework will define how you approach a DBA and what career paths will be best suited for your major. A DBA typically requires 40-60 credit hours, and while it’s not as rigorous as a PhD, students in this specialization still conduct research and take on residencies to complete the program.

Students who want to earn a DBA program must earn their undergraduate degree in a related field, maintain a 3.0 GPA on average, and propose a dissertation based on their research. Graduates typically earn their DBAs faster than a PhD due to fewer credit hours and research needs.

EdD in Leadership Programs

university professor teaching college students

The Doctor of Education, or EdD , offers students the chance to work in K-12 educational settings, as well as universities. It’s up to the student how far they take their specialization, but many students design their EdD programs around teaching and working with other students.

With specific learning theories, students often go on to become skilled teachers who have a strong background in higher education administration and educational psychology. Depending on your specialization, you can pursue one of these degrees:

  • Doctor of Education – Educational Leadership
  • Doctor of Education – Leadership in Higher Education
  • Doctor of Education – Organizational Leadership
  • Doctor of Education – Administrator Leadership for Teaching & Learning
  • Doctor of Education – Reading and Literacy Leadership
  • Doctor of Education – Teacher Leadership

The EdD program is usually the fastest of all doctoral leadership degrees. This is mainly because it typically doesn’t require as many credit hours. Students typically finish their degrees in less than three years after taking 40 to 45 credit hours. The coursework is designed to students to become advanced educators with skills in administration and diverse learning theories.

Students who want to advance their leadership abilities can research different specializations in higher education and complete a dissertation to graduate.

Most students who want an EdD already work in education as a teacher or administrator, but they may choose to focus on a new area to advance their careers. Some teachers choose to get an EdD in organizational leadership and school law or human resource management. The choice depends on the student and what’s desirable for their career path.

Should I Get My Doctorate in Leadership?

Whether it’s a company or school, organizations need talented leaders who know how to organize a project and successfully complete it. Students with online PhD’s in Leadership often go on to incredibly dynamic roles in administration and higher education, where they can truly excel as leaders.

They may take on roles in which they are able to build teams and strategically plan projects, or they may want to take on a role in higher education working with other research students.

If you decide to get a doctorate in leadership, you may want to opt for a DBA or EdD as they are typically faster programs and easier to get into than a PhD program. This is mainly because a PhD program usually requires that you have multiple years of experience as a working professional, and there are more credit hours required.

Most students will also have to complete residency courses and attend on-campus meetings for hands-on classroom knowledge. It’s important to know what specialization you want to focus on, as it can help you decide on coursework and a career path for after you graduate.

What Can I Do with a Doctorate in Leadership?

different professions for doctorate in leadership

There are endless fields to study with a doctorate in leadership. You may want to go into business, or perhaps you want to be an advanced educator at the professorial level. Earning a leadership degree is just the first step in working in a management role and moving into administration.

Most leadership degrees teach students about practical problems that face teachers in the classroom or how to work together with different teams at a business. Leaders must be organized and apply theories of policy and organization to keep everyone on task.

Some of the careers most popular for leadership degree graduates include:

  • Executive management
  • Postsecondary education administrator
  • Human resources manager
  • Financial manager
  • Public relations manager
  • Non-profit manager
  • Marketing manager
  • Project manager
  • Training and development manager

As these jobs are expected to grow through the next ten years, it’s clear that students will likely have all the control when it comes to picking their specialization. They may choose to go into product development, finance, marketing, human resources, education, or healthcare administration, which makes it a diverse degree to earn for anyone who wants to pursue a potentially six-figure administration position.

Are Online Doctorate Degrees in Leadership Respected?

happy female applicant hired in a job

There is a common misconception that just because degrees are earned online that they won’t be considered “as good as” a degree earned on a physical campus. However, there’s usually no distinction between degrees earned at a traditional university or via an online program.

Students may earn the same doctoral degrees at an online institution as they would at a physical university in their hometowns.

The benefits of an online doctoral program outweigh the need for an Ivy League college, as you can typically earn a degree in less time, pay less for the degree, and learn everything you need to go onto become a successful education administer.

Can You Earn a PhD in Leadership Entirely Online?

female student studying in a cafe

There are many online programs that offer exclusively online PhD programs. The question is whether you get the same value as a physical on-campus course or a hybrid course that may require a few visits to campus.

The answer is that students have to decide what their best options are for attending classes. If you work full-time or live far away from campus, you may decide that the online program is the perfect blend of convenience and professional degree programs.

Some programs may also seem like they are entirely online, but they may have a residency program where you have to go to school part of the time to learn and get grades while working in the field.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Doctorate in Leadership?

a pocket watch marked with years

Each program is different. Some schools want you to have comprehensive coursework that takes years to complete, while others know that you are working full-time and trying to move up quickly.

Typical doctoral leadership programs require at least a 40 credit hour completion, but many of the schools have changed to 60 credit hours. While you may be able to complete 40 credit hours in two to three years, you could be spending more time on your degree if you need 60 credit hours.

Most students who want a PhD must stay in school for four to five years.

How Much Does a Doctorate in Leadership Cost?

man showing money in his wallet

Your tuition is largely based on the classification and location of the school. You can expect a class to cost anywhere between $400 and $900. With higher costs, private universities typically charge more, but they may offer more aid to military veterans.

Students should expect to pay a minimum of $15,000 for a doctoral degree in leadership, but depending on the region and school accreditation, that number could go up to $50,000 or more. Students should also factor in the costs of books, computers, and a living stipend.

What’s the Difference Between a PhD and an EdD?

different careers showing the difference between a PhD and EdD

A Doctor of Philosophy degree in leadership is the highest degree that you can earn within the field. Students with a PhD in this field tend to move into the academic field, pursuing higher education administration roles or leading research projects about different applied leadership theories.

An EdD is a more practical application of the degree. Students are usually able to earn this degree much faster and typically have to take fewer credit hours than a PhD to graduate. While both degrees may require a dissertation, students with an EdD are expected to know about educational topics more than research. A growing number of Doctor of Education no dissertation programs are available.

This means that EdD candidates have in-depth knowledge of skills and techniques to keep students engaged in the classroom and apply different strategies for teaching material through the K-12 grades.

Candidates who plan on earning a PhD should think about their prerequisites as well. Most graduate schools require that PhD candidates apply early, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and have some working experience in the field.

What’s the Difference Between a PhD and a DBA?

students studying notes in books and laptop consecutively

While a PhD teaches students about research and focusing on a specialization, Doctor of Business Administration graduates go onto career paths in business and non-profit organizations. They may become financial account managers, project managers, or healthcare administrators.

Students who earn a professional doctorate can apply their skills and education to a specific role within a business. For example, students who earn a DBA may become human resources managers or public relations managers. This is why coursework mainly focuses on communication, business administration, marketing, project management , and financial accounting.

What’s the difference between an online PhD leadership degree and an organizational leadership Ph.D. online doctorate?

An online PhD in Leadership and an online PhD in Organizational Leadership are both advanced degrees focused on the study of leadership, but there can be some differences in their specific emphasis and scope.

Here’s a general comparison:

  • PhD in Leadership : The online PhD leadership program typically focuses on leadership theories, practices, and principles across various contexts, including business, education, government, and non-profit organizations. It explores leadership at a broader level, examining individual, group, and societal dynamics.
  • PhD in Organizational Leadership : This program specifically concentrates on leadership within the context of organizations. It delves deeper into topics such as organizational behavior, change management, strategic leadership, team dynamics, and the application of leadership theories within the organizational setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

While researching doctorate degrees in strategic leadership, you may have questions about how this program can help meet your goals. Here are some common questions about Liberty’s DSL program.

What is a Doctor of Strategic Leadership? What is a DSL degree?

Liberty University’s Doctor of Strategic Leadership or DSL degree is a practical doctorate focused on applying effective leadership skills to solve business problems. Unlike many PhD programs, a DSL degree is a professional doctorate focused on applying your experience to real-world problems in business leadership. If you want to retool with new skills and strategies to apply your experience in new and effective ways, then Liberty University’s leadership program will help you get the training you need.

Is a doctorate worth it?

With a masters degree alone, you may run into limitations of where your skills and education can take you. You have the experience and the knowledge from years in the field, but you may struggle to demonstrate your expertise in a way that helps you stand out. With a doctorate, you can develop those skills further into a more effective toolset that can help you tackle even more difficult and important business problems, all while demonstrating that you are a top expert in your field.

A doctorate can also help you achieve your highest pay potential. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, professionals with doctorates made 21% more in salary than their counterparts with only masters degrees.* This data shows that not only can a doctorate help you show your expertise, but it can open doors to new opportunities as well.

*Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, at Education Pays, 2019 (viewed online February 20, 2020). Cited projections may not reflect local and/or short-term economic or job conditions and do not guarantee actual job growth.

Can you teach with a professional doctorate?

As a practical, results-based doctorate, Liberty University’s online Doctor of Strategic Leadership program is designed to help you show that you are an expert in the field of business leadership. While this degree is a practical, professionally focused program, it still provides the opportunity to teach at the college level.

Most universities require that you have a doctorate in order to teach masters or even some bachelors courses. This requirement means that earning your doctorate in leadership and management online can help you take advantage of teaching opportunities as well as increase your potential in the field. You may also be eligible for educational leadership roles with your specialized skills and doctorate.

What resources will be available to me in this program?

You will be granted access to a wide variety of online resources through Liberty University’s library portal.

Common Questions

A Ph.D. in Leadership or Leadership Studies is a research doctorate that focuses on the theory and practice of organizational leadership. In many programs, students have the opportunity to study leadership within a specific field, such as education. In this case, you’ll explore how strategic leadership can help you effectively guide, manage, and improve educational organizations—from schools to colleges to nonprofits. Courses in subjects such as decision making, program planning and assessment, change management, and other skill areas will prepare you for leadership opportunities that call for advanced scholarship and expertise.

While many working educators opt to earn a Ph.D. in Leadership, these programs differ slightly from practitioner degrees such as the Ed.D. Namely, research plays a larger role in the Ph.D. You’ll take courses in research methodology, including qualitative and quantitative research methods, inferential statistics, and statistical analysis. And you’ll embark on an original dissertation that furthers the body of knowledge in your field.

With a Ph.D. in Leadership, you can pursue growing career paths in educational organizations such as schools, colleges, and universities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that postsecondary administrator jobs will increase over the next decade as more students pursue higher education to achieve their goals. Postsecondary administrators bring together expertise in organizational management and education to lead and manage academic programs, research activities, and student services. Alternatively, candidates who pursue additional requirements for certification could become administrators at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

With a research doctorate under your belt, you could also pursue a career as a postsecondary teacher . Overall, this field should grow at a faster-than-average rate of 12 percent over the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most roles require a doctoral degree—generally, a Ph.D.

Finally, earning a doctorate in leadership could equip you for a management analyst career path. Management analysts evaluate organizations and suggest strategies for solving problems, improving efficiency, and growing profits. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that management analyst jobs will grow by 14 percent over the next decade—much faster than average.

Is an online Ph.D. in Leadership a respected credential? Will earning your Ph.D. be a worthwhile investment in your career? For most candidates, the answer is yes. Not only could your doctorate in leadership studies help you stand out in the job market, but now that online learning is a popular and credible way to earn a degree, there’s no difference between a traditional and online Ph.D. in Leadership beyond the convenience of studying in a virtual setting. Potential advantages include:

  • Career opportunities. Earning a doctorate is typically a requirement for roles such as postsecondary administrator and postsecondary teacher. With a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies, you’ll learn the skills you need to take your career to the highest level.
  • Higher earnings. With a Ph.D., you could qualify for roles that command a higher salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, postsecondary administrators earned a median annual salary of $96,910 in 2021. Postsecondary teachers earned $79,640 in the same period.
  • A bigger impact. Leading your school or organization into the future calls for advanced preparation. Earning a doctorate in leadership studies will equip you with the theory, skills, and research experience you need to solve urgent problems, drive positive change, and make a lasting difference.

Are you a current educator wishing to obtain Kentucky Rank 1 certification via our online leadership doctorate? You can achieve your goals by taking additional coursework within the School of Education. Keep in mind that a Ph.D. or Ed.D. alone will not lead to the Kentucky Rank 1 certification without an accompanying planned program from the School of Education that includes the courses required for Rank 1. Our knowledgeable advisors are here to help you enroll in the classes you will need for both your Ph.D. in Leadership Studies and the Kentucky Rank 1 certification.

Course Details

Course listing, course name.

This course is the first step in transitioning from knowledge consumer to knowledge producer. Scholar-practitioners will learn to use business theory, advance scholarly inquiry, aid business practices, and form realistic program completion goals. Preparation will be done in the context of an examination of modern trends in business theory.

In this course, students have the opportunity to gain foundational knowledge in 15 different areas important to business and management including accounting, finance, law, ethics, marketing, global business, information systems, research, leadership, strategic management, operations management, human resources, organizational behavior, and micro and macroeconomics. This course serves as a foundation for success in future courses.

Capacity building, an integral aspect of organizational leadership, involves investing in the right people for the right roles, and implementing the necessary systems to optimize their success. In this course, students will learn theories and best practices having to do with leadership’s role in building and maintaining organizational capacity.

The Theory and Practice of Organizational Leadership course focuses on theories of leadership as they apply to organizational success. In this course, students will learn about various theoretical and applied leadership theories and practices. Students will also identify theories and practices appropriate for their own use in their own organizations.

In this course, students gain a deep understanding of the complexity of organizational ethics and ethical leadership through critical analysis and research regarding ethical principles. Students will research and evaluate consequences of unethical leadership, and how to build and maintain a culture of ethics. Students will assess ethics as they pertain to the globalization of organizations.

Communication is never more important than during times of change. Leaders play an integral role in leading organizational change by helping others understand the need and purpose of change through effective communication. In this course, you will examine leadership theories which underpin communication strategies and practices to successfully manage organizational change.

Coaches and consultants (internal and external) have become an important part of organizational reality. In this course, students will examine coaching and consulting theories and application.  Students will also explore their skills in adapting their styles to particular organizational contexts, through both effective communication and astute analyses and recommendations.

Leadership strategies are often unique to a specific organizational sector (corporate, governmental, nonprofit, etc.). In this course, you will examine cross-disciplinary leadership theories and strategies for their appropriateness to particular sectors. You will also evaluate the role of leadership in organizational development, organizational culture, and organizational change.

In this course, you will engage in the process of scholarly literature reviews and academic writing. With an emphasis on how to (a) conduct effective literature searches, specifically in preparation for the dissertation, (b) develop a plan for writing comprehensive, critical, and synthesized reviews of research literature, and (c) critically review and write about underlying theory/conceptual frameworks, you will develop a foundation for future research. The overarching goal of this course is for you to conduct an exhaustive search of the peer-reviewed research literature in your topic area and identify potential areas of inquiry for your dissertation.

In this course, you will cultivate a statistical mindset through learning and nurturing skills needed to perform and interpret univariate inferential statistics.  The course will facilitate building your statistical confidence in assessing and performing statistics. The course will cover univariate parametric and non-parametric statistical tests, interpretation of statistical output, and introduce skills needed to select statistical tests based on quantitative research questions.

In this course, you will learn advanced statistical principles and how to apply them to quantitative research in the study of organizations. You will be provided an overview of advanced statistical concepts used in empirical research, including inferential analysis. Advanced computations will be performed using commonly used statistical software. The focus involves helping you build independent scholarly skills with an emphasis on understanding multivariate data; the use, comprehension, and evaluation of sophisticated statistical concepts, and presentation of statistical results.

During this course, as a  scholar-practitioner, you will build the skills essential for designing quantitative studies; analyzing the data collected in these studies, and interpreting the results of data analyses. You will explore designs and statistical techniques to use with their envisioned dissertation research.

During this course, you will examine qualitative methods for studying human behavior including grounded theory, narrative analysis, ethnography, mixed methods, and case studies. You will explore designs and methodologies to use with your envisioned research.

The Pre-Candidacy Prospectus is intended to ensure you have mastered knowledge of your discipline prior to candidacy status and demonstrated the ability to design empirical research as an investigator before moving on to the dissertation research coursework. You will demonstrate the ability to synthesize empirical, peer-reviewed research to support all assignments in this course. The Pre-Candidacy Prospectus is completed only after all foundation, specialization, and research courses have been completed.

Students in this course will be required to complete Chapter 1 of their dissertation proposal including a review of literature with substantiating evidence of the problem, the research purpose and questions, the intended methodological design and approach,  and the significance of the study. A completed, committee approved (against the minimum rubric standards) Chapter 1 is required to pass this course successfully. Students who do not receive approval of Chapter 1 to minimum standards will be able to take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to finalize and gain approval of Chapter 1.

The program is designed to support socially engaged leaders and change agents to inquire into the complex and thorny challenges of their fields and to conduct research that can help improve that practice.

A PhD Program to Fit Your Busy Life

Your personal life is taken into account:

  • Live anywhere
  • Work full-time
  • Attend three residencies each year (for three years)
  • Stay connected through our robust online community

Your interests and curiosities are at the core

Do you wonder why your teams aren’t working well together and what change could improve their relationships? Or, how to improve student learning on the campus where you teach or administer programs? Do you wish you could understand why many individuals are resistant to change and what might be ways to engage them successfully? Or why do so many leaders continue to operate from a command and control style?

These are the types of curiosities our students bring to their study. These are the places of wonder that frame discussions, demonstrations of learning, real-world change initiatives, and the dissertation. This PhD program is an opportunity to explore in-depth evidence-based ways to practice and lead change that can make a difference.

Your current professional life is enriched

At the heart of study is the student’s own practice in professional life. The program enables learners to continuously reflect on and integrate their real-world experience with scholarship and methods of inquiry. The program encourages students to integrate theory and practice in order to enrich their own practice and expand relevant theory. This is not about an ivory tower, but about taking your learning into your workplace and community to help make positive change, improve outcomes, and engage individuals in ways that benefit the common good.

Your career opportunities expand

The majority of students in the program are mid to senior-level practitioners. This means that for many, the program journey and achieving their PhD deepens the career paths they are already on. For some, securing a PhD offers the opportunity for new positions, and provides them with the expertise to open consulting practices, teach at the local college or university, or help them become a more public intellectual in their professional networks. Learn more about the impactful work of our learning community members within our newsletters and Facebook announcements of alumni and student career and community achievements.

Flexible, Innovative, Outcomes-Based, Low-Residency Design

The PhD in Leadership and Change is a post-master’s, full-time program delivered in a unique and distinctive model:

  • Low Residency hybrid delivery means face-to-face meetings 3 times a year
  • Professional Seminar for small and large group discussions and workshops throughout the year
  • Credit for demonstrating learning rather than seat time in a course
  • Learner flexibility within an annual structure, cohort progress through the program, and individual interests
  • Dissertation Phase for conducting original scholarly research
  • Intense faculty and staff support, from the first day to dissertation completion

Residencies

Three face-to-face residencies are held annually for the first three years of the program. The residencies combine cohort-based and program-wide seminars, advising sessions and orientations, guest speakers, peer discussions, and engaging presentations. All other program study is done online both within cohorts and individually. In addition, meeting with faculty at residencies is coupled with many opportunities for one-on-one work throughout the year, virtual workshops on topics of interest, and regular advising.

The residencies are intense gatherings combining graduate seminars, guest lectures, advising sessions, peer discussions, and student presentations. Residencies are held on a rotating basis at some of the Antioch University campuses. Students who remain in pre-candidacy in the 4th year have the opportunity to participate in virtual support residencies until they do advance to candidacy.

Professional Seminar

Participate in online interaction throughout the year For the first three years, the faculty-facilitated Proseminar is the cohort’s “homeroom,” in which students discuss, integrate, and make meaning of their learning for each of the first three years. In small and large groups – students engage in virtual and face-to-face dialogue and develop the skills of group reflection as an emerging community of scholars. Students spend approximately three hours a week involved in Proseminar activity, through discussion forums and web meetings.

Learner Flexibility

Work with faculty to align assignments with your needs and interests. There are a number of ways to think of flexibility in this program. The most obvious is perhaps the ability to live and work anywhere and attend a rigorous and engaging doctoral program. As importantly, however, within the clearly-defined annual requirements, students have the flexibility to submit the assignments in ways that align with the needs of their busy professional lives and personal responsibilities. Each student works clearly with an individual advisor to map their path to most successfully navigate the program’s requirements. Finally, flexibility refers to the ability to individualize one’s study based on one’s own deep interests in leadership and change.

Dissertation Phase

Conduct original, scholarly research A PhD offers the opportunity to conduct original scholarly research, a dissertation. In our program, we want to support research that makes a difference, and that has the potential to inform and affect positive change in organizations and communities and schools, and workplaces.

Over the course of the first three pre-candidacy years, students have the opportunity to engage in the interdisciplinary study of leadership and change as well as to develop competence in research skills. Once they complete the pre-candidacy requirements, they are well prepared to design original research into a topic that matters to them. With a strong supportive Dissertation Committee, students are challenged to conduct a meaningful study that answers their professional curiosities and helps inform ways to lead change and to improve practice. Check out our program’s dissertations!

Our Curriculum is Interdisciplinary

The PhD in Leadership and Change program prepares students to engage in the art and science of leading change from both practice-based and theory-based perspectives.

The broad and deep interdisciplinary curriculum draws from psychology, education, management, social science, and the humanities. We believe this interdisciplinary mix is critical because leading change doesn’t sit in one disciplinary box. Rather, each discipline provides an important lens into the phenomena. For example, psychological studies may help us understand individual resistances to change, whereas critical management studies may help us understand organizational structures and processes that inhibit innovation, and the social sciences may help us understand social-cultural contexts for marginalization and empowerment of community movements.

Over the course of the program, students are exposed to an array of disciplinary perspectives and supported in their efforts to find interdisciplinary opportunities to blend lens in order to best understand the complex challenges of our times.

The Practice of Leadership and Change is Cross-Sector

Just as the study of leadership and change is interdisciplinary, the practice of leadership and change is cross-sector. It would be difficult to imagine any professional leading change within the comfortable confines of their profession: school administrators program need to work with the surrounding neighborhood organizations; business professionals work closely to improve community efforts; healthcare leaders work closely with local nonprofits, and so forth. Our world is complex, and leading change isn’t in a silo, neither discipline nor sector.

That is why we believe so strongly in the power and synergy of our cross-sector learning community. Students deliberate with peers who come from across the world and country, who work in sectors similar and different, and who bring experiences both diverse and similar. It is a powerful opportunity to expand one’s horizon.
