Applying for admission

Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply in plenty of time, and even before completion of their current qualifying degree. You do not need to find a supervisor before applying, the Business School will do this for you during the application process.

As such, as part of your application you should select  Business HoD  in the 'research supervisor' required field.

If you are shortlisted, you will be contacted for an interview. Interviews are usually conducted either virtually or in person.

After your interview, if your application is successful, you will be issued an offer letter.

Required documents

The documents you need to provide with your application will vary depending upon which discipline you are applying for, see the  admission requirements table (pdf, 67.8KB)  for more information.

Statement of purpose

As a part of your application, you will need to write a 1-2 page document to describe your motivation for pursuing doctoral study

Research proposal

There are three different types of research proposals that are required depending upon which Discipline you are applying to a Statement of Research Interests, an Indicative Research Proposal or a Developed Research Proposal.

To see which type of research proposal you will need to provide, please refer to the  admission requirements table (pdf, 67.8KB) .

Statement of Research Interests

This is a 1-2 page statement detailing your research interests. The research statement can include potential research areas, topics, and methodologies. The statement may be used to match your interests with a research supervisor.

Indicative Research Proposal

The indicative research proposal is a brief document with a maximum length of 1500 words (if desired, you may add a paragraph outlining other research interests at the end of this document). The indicative proposal may provide a starting point for discussion with your future supervisor.

The indicative research proposal may include:

  • Description of the project – what is your research question/hypothesis?
  • Brief review of literature in the area that you may be aware of.
  • Expected research contribution – what do you expect your research to contribute to existing knowledge. Is it innovative and/or original?
  • The proposed methodology – qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods?
  • Potential data sources.

Developed Research Proposal

This is a detailed document (3000-6000 words) that outlines your research question, chosen methodology, understanding of the current literature, and particular contribution to the field. The developed research proposal is intended to clearly set out the aims and potential significance of the research. It should have the following elements:

  • Introduction – articulating the research problem and why investigating it matters.
  • Review of existing literature – this should be a succinct overview of the most relevant and recent literature related to the research phenomena. It should lead to a clearly articulated preliminary research question.
  • Methodology – a description of your proposed methodology. Here you should explain how you plan to undertake the research and how your methods will allow you to answer your research question. Please outline any past experience you have in applying such a methodology.
  • Potential significance of the research: What are the implications of your research for theory and/or practice?
  • Bibliography - at this stage the bibliography does not need to be complete. Its purpose is to give the supervisor an indication of the reading you have already done (or plan to do).

GMAT / GRE scores

Please note that the disciplines of Business Analytics and International Business require you to submit a  GMAT  or  GRE  score with your application. This requirement is detailed on the  admission requirements table (pdf, 67.8KB) . Submitted test scores must not be older than five years.

  • Only complete applications can be processed. Applications that have been received but that remain incomplete at the closing date will be considered for the next semester intake.
  • Meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee that you will receive an offer.
  • Due to the application form being standardised, it will ask for your name and proof of contact with a supervisor. In order to progress your application, you may put “to be confirmed” in the supervisor name section if you have not already identified a supervisor.  The Business School does not require this information at the point of application.

Completion requirement

The degree requires the satisfactory completion of six coursework units of study and a research thesis of 80,000 words on an approved topic, under the supervision of an academic panel.

Admission requirement

Admission to a research degree in the University of Sydney Business School is very competitive. You need to have completed an Australian honours (or equivalent) or a postgraduate degree with outstanding results (at least 80%) in order to be considered for an offer. Admission to the PhD program also requires prior completion of a 20,000 word honours or Masters thesis.

How to apply.

If you are interested in pursuing a PhD with the School of Management & Governance (UNSW Business), then you will need to receive an Invitation to Apply from the school’s Postgraduate Research Coordinator (PGRC) in charge of Admissions, who can be reached at [email protected].

To receive an Invitation to Apply, you should 1) self-assess your eligibility, and 2) then submit an  Expression of Interest (EOI) . Details of what to include in your EOI can be found here .

The School of Management & Governance will review the EOI and, if the application is sufficiently strong to pass the preliminary screening, issue an Invitation to Apply, with which the interested candidate can then proceed to formally apply through the UNSW Apply Online portal. Detailed instructions about the formal application will be provided in the “Invitation to Apply” email.

Higher Degree Research students in our school normally commence their study in Term 1 (around the beginning of February) each year. Interested candidates should submit EOI between May and mid-August   to be considered for admission in the next year. PhD Degrees in Australia

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. PhD study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a, student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in Australia are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships.

PhD Entry Requirements

Australian institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree . English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment of the remaining study, and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, there are a number of documents required when submitting your application. They include:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Academic references
  • Personal statement
  • Research proposal

- PhD Research Proposal

A research proposal is required by all students when applying to study for a PhD. The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your program can begin.

How much does a PhD cost in Australia?

Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive. In Australia, candidates can expect to pay 40,000 AUD- 60,000 AUD. Dedicated scholarships can help support your PhD, and it is rare for a PhD student not to be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship .

Why a Doctorate in Business Administration Is Becoming More Valuable

Sponsor content from upGrad.

phd after mba in australia

At the turn of the 20th century, the world was industrializing at a rapid pace. Businesses were growing larger and more complex, with more employees working in more diversified divisions spread across more geographical boundaries.

As a result, demand grew for people who had special training in managing the general operations of a business, which led to the creation and proliferation of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

More than 100 years later, MBAs have become a commodity that no longer serve organizations’ core needs.

In today’s age of data and information, knowledge has become the most valuable resource. Companies don’t necessarily need more general managers who can assess broad patterns across multiple industries—they need people with deep expertise in specific domains who can analyze data and generate unique insights that lead to better business decisions.

That’s why Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) holders are becoming increasingly valuable in the modern workplace.

DBA is a professional degree representing the highest level of qualification in management. In contrast to an MBA, it takes students on a different path toward acquiring and using business knowledge.

For an MBA, students spend two years taking a broad range of practical courses to learn about several pillars of business—such as accounting, finance, marketing, leadership, operations, strategy, and ethics—to help them become effective leaders across many industries.

By contrast, DBAs spend up to two years studying academic literature across several domains and up to two additional years designing and executing an original research project: a dissertation focused on one domain. The primary goal of a DBA is to produce scholarly individuals who have deep expertise in a field of management.

When seeking executive-level positions, DBAs’ “Dr.” titles are likely to help them stand out from their peers. DBAs can also pursue high-level positions in areas such as consulting by becoming subject-matter experts—or maintain ties with academia as full-time or adjunct professors.

DBAs’ training gives them diverse career options. The academic literature they read gives them expertise in understanding management theories that can help them analyze real-world situations and differentiate the signal from the noise. A DBA specializing in innovation can assess whether newcomers to a market pose a credible threat as a disruptive innovation to an existing company.

Students then learn advanced scientific techniques in quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies, which trains them in analyzing data to generate valid inferences that their organizations can use for decision-making purposes. Rather than relying on gut feel and graphs, DBAs can use powerful techniques such as sampling data to reduce bias, using statistical regressions to identify the strongest factors that influence an outcome, or designing an experiment to gain 100% certainty over the causal relationship between variables.

Finally, DBAs combine their business knowledge with analytical skills to design and execute original research studies, making them the world’s leading experts in particular domains.

DBAs also stand out because they represent only 2% of all people who hold higher degrees in business. In 2021, more than 250,000 students graduated with MBAs or specialist degrees in business; only 5,000 graduated with doctorates.

While a DBA may represent an attractive option that can be highly valuable to organizations today, they are not necessarily recommended for everyone.

To help you determine whether a DBA is right for you, the most important question to ask yourself centers on whether you’re satisfied with the tools and frameworks you use to analyze data and information to make important business decisions. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering where these frameworks come from—or whether there might be a better way to make decisions—consider applying to a DBA program. These programs are designed to channel deep intellectual interests and passions toward producing business knowledge that’s both theoretically novel and practically relevant.

DBA training may help you develop deeper knowledge than an MBA program will while opening doors to more ambitious careers in industry or academia. While MBA degrees are designed to meet the needs of 20th-century businesses, DBAs can help meet the needs of organizations today—and well into the future.

Is it Possible to Get My PhD After My MBA?

MBA graduate contemplating PhD degree

In academia, numerous accomplishments can be achieved. You can earn a dual degree and have expertise in multiple fields, or further your career potential by going back to school . But what about progressing from an MBA to a PhD?

In regards to higher education, many consider earning a PhD, or doctorate degree, the pinnacle of success. Usually, due to passion for a particular industry or subject, a PhD candidate will spend years of rigorous research to unpack its intricacies and become a leading expert in the field.  At the end of their studies, they are able to finally see their work come to fruition when they receive their doctorate and join alongside other scholars. However, is it typical for an MBA graduate to move onto pursuing their PhD? And is there a specific purpose? Are there different types of PhD programs? What is the difference between a PhD and DBA?

To answer the budding question: yes, you can pursue your PhD after earning your MBA, and choosing to earn a doctorate is entirely up to you and your aspirations. To help you better understand if getting a PhD is the right choice, we look at the path an MBA graduate can take to earn their PhD, one of the higher purposes of a doctorate, and the different types of academic programs.

What is a PhD, and What is it Used For?

By definition, a PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy in a particular discipline, which is why it's also referred to as a doctorate. This focus is typically for individuals highly passionate about a specific subject matter, driven by the pursuit to understand it better through rigorous research. A majority of students seeking their PhD are eager researchers, although there are always exceptions, and each carries out years of highly intensive research to conclude their original thesis and earn their doctorate.

In terms of translating your education into a career, a doctorate can be used in a plethora of fields, especially if one’s thesis is around a wider subject matter and can be a discipline applied to various industries (take organizational development, for example). For those who are passionate about a career in research, a doctoral degree is a perfect fit. Possibly the most popular field for those with a doctorate is a fruitful career in academia, teaching their subject matter to others interested in the same area. Many graduates become faculty members at business schools upon completing their PhD and provide their expertise to their students. Regardless of which industry you choose, you can be assured that a PhD will provide you with numerous opportunities.

How Long Does it Take to Progress from an MBA to PhD?

The timeframe for earning your PhD can vary depending on program and location. Many countries have varying timelines of how long the completion of a doctoral program will take. In the United States, the average is around 4-5 years of completion after receiving your Master of Business Administration.

Do You Need an MBA to Get a PhD?

To be accepted into a doctoral program, you must have a master’s degree. It does not have to be a Master of Business Administration, but it does need to be a master’s of some form. Depending on your area of specialization, it could be advantageous to earn your MBA in pursuit of a PhD if you are planning to embark on a career in business upon completion of your doctorate. Additionally, one important aspect to consider is the program itself. It is important to look into a program’s requirements before applying to meet the eligibility criteria.

The Difference Between a DBA and a PhD

For those specifically interested in a career in business, a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a highly beneficial doctoral program. A DBA focuses on a broader spectrum of business disciplines, dedicating research toward multiple corporate facets, and practical implementation. On the contrary, a PhD narrows into a specific area of discipline and research, emphasizing theory, and it’s potential implications. While both are heavily centered around research and implementation, a DBA sets business executives and leaders on a path to discover new possibilities for their organizations and businesses. In a way, it allows established business professionals to “trailblaze” the way for new and innovative ideas that can disrupt the market and set a precedent for the future of business.

Can you do a PhD without a master’s degree?

Study tips Published 5 Apr, 2022  ·  6-minute read

If you want the most straightforward answer to the question ‘can you get a PhD without a master’s degree’, it’s yes. Should you apply to study a PhD without a master’s though? Let’s unpack that.

There are quite a few entry requirements you need to meet to apply for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). At the core of it, all these requirements are about proving you’re ready to embark on the long (3-4 years full time) and challenging – but incredibly rewarding – process of conducting research and writing a thesis. PhD prerequisites are there to assess your preparedness for this type of study.

So, let’s have a look at what the PhD prerequisites are in Australia and the questions we’re commonly asked about them.

Can I do a PhD without a degree?

In Australia, you’ll need to have completed a degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) relevant to your proposed research topic and approved by the university to be considered as a candidate. However, the good news is, for those of you wondering ‘can you get a PhD without a bachelor’s?’ the answer is yes – it is possible at some universities.

Say you finished high school and went straight into the workforce. You built experience in your field over years of hard work. After a while, you decide that you’d like a qualification to solidify your knowledge and skills, or to upskill in your area and open even more doors. So, you apply for postgraduate studies.

Many universities in Australia will consider applicants for postgrad study (typically graduate certificates) based on proof of extensive professional experience and other post-secondary studies (certificates from TAFE, for example) in a relevant field, rather than the traditional completion of bachelor’s level studies.

Admission into a graduate certificate without a bachelor’s degree is very much dependent on your study area of choice and the institution at which you wish to study. Always check the specific prerequisites of the institution and program.

In most cases, if you want to study a PhD and you don’t have a bachelor’s degree, but you do have a lot of industry and research experience in your field, you’ll need to start your journey by enrolling in a graduate certificate and working your way up to a master’s and then a PhD. It’s possible to get into a PhD program with a graduate diploma (and no bachelor’s or master’s degree), but you’ll need extensive documentation proving former research experience to support your application – plus a decent GPA. This type of application is assessed on a case-by-case basis by some universities and can be extremely competitive.

PhD pathways

Do you need a master’s for a PhD?

As we said earlier, no – you don’t need a master’s to apply for a PhD. And if you're wondering more specifically ‘is an MPhil required for a PhD?’, the answer is also no. It may make logical sense at face value to complete a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and then go on to study a Doctor of Philosophy, but in reality, it tends to work a bit differently.

All these types of postgraduate degrees and higher degrees by research can be a little confusing to keep track of, so let’s break it down into simpler terms.

Degree Duration Delivery
Master's by coursework 1-2 years full time Structured coursework
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) 1.5-2 years full time Self-directed research
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD 3-4 years full time Self-directed research

So, here’s how some of the pathways through these degrees work.

  • Some students decide to study and complete a Master of Philosophy, as it’s shorter than a PhD but still allows them to delve into a research project and produce a thesis (~40,000 words).
  • Other students begin studying an MPhil then find they’d like to take their research further and apply to upgrade to a PhD program, adding a few more years onto their studies and producing an 80,000-word thesis.
  • Many students aim big from the get-go and apply directly to a PhD program after having completed either a bachelor’s degree with honours or a master’s by coursework.

This is by no means an extensive list of ways in which you can order your studies; it’s just a few of the most common paths taken by university students interested in postgraduate studies and higher degrees by research.

The benefits of studying a master’s before a PhD

Now we’ve established that you can apply to study a Doctor of Philosophy without a master’s degree, let’s address the next big question: should you? Here are just a handful of the reasons why completing a master’s before moving onto a PhD is generally a good idea:

  • It gives you a competitive edge compared to other applicants.
  • It will provide you with a taste of what it’s like to conduct long-form research and reveal what it takes to be a good PhD student .
  • You'll have a chance to explore a research topic to see if there’s enough scope to turn it into your PhD, or you may find offshoot topics that could be explored in more detail.
  • You'll experience what it’s like to work with a supervisor and better understand if this process suits your personality type.

Can I go straight from bachelor’s to PhD?

Yes. Most universities will accept applications from students who have a bachelor’s degree with honours (typically at least IIA) as their highest level of completed study. Some universities may accept a bachelor’s degree without honours but with several years of relevant research experience, or a bachelor’s degree without honours but followed by a relevant graduate certificate or graduate diploma.

As we've emphasised above, there are definite benefits to completing further studies after your undergraduate degree to prepare you for your PhD. It’s understandable that you might want to fast-track your way to your Doctor of Philosophy, but remember that going in as prepared as possible will help you get the most out of your research.

If you don’t want to commit to a master’s program after your undergraduate degree but you still have your heart set on a PhD, talk to your course convener about fitting research units into your study plan during your bachelor’s program. Completing a graduate certificate or diploma following your bachelor’s, with a focus on the research area you wish to pursue with a PhD, will help you get a clearer idea of potential research topics too.

There are opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply for one of UQ’s summer and winter research programs . These programs can help to boost your knowledge and skills in research and your field of study – and better prepare you for PhD studies.

When considering whether or not to apply for a PhD without a master’s degree, remember that the process is competitive, and it can take time to find the right supervisor . Having a master’s degree could put you ahead of other applicants and secure you that valued place as a PhD candidate.

4. Does PR Expire In Australia?

A PR visa allows people to live and work in the country indefinitely. However, the person doesn't have the rights and privileges of a citizen .

The Visa holder gets a 5-year travel facility, enabling him to exit and re-enter the country whenever they want. After five years, the travel component on the visa will expire, making travel back to Australia difficult. It requires renewal/extension of travel facility on their visa every five years.

Thus, the PR never expires, and the travel facility for entry and exit from Australia expires after five years. To return to the country, a PR Visa holder requires an Australian passport (after becoming a citizen) or a return resident visa that costs around $365 per person.

5. Can You Stay A Permanent Resident Forever?

Yes. You can work, study and stay in Australia as a permanent resident forever and enjoy the benefits and perks it brings. However, you do not have an automatic right of entry to Australia that an Australian citizen has.

Your right to re-enter Australia after travelling abroad will depend on whether the travel facility on your PR visa is valid. PR visa holders need to renew the travel facility on their visa once every five years to enjoy unrestricted entry and exit into the country.

6. What Happens After Five Years of PR in Australia?

As the travel/entry rights on your Australian PR visa expire after five years, you will need to get a Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155 or 157) that extends your visa's travel/entry rights. Alternatively, you can apply for Australian citizenship.

7. How Many Years After PR Can You Apply For Citizenship?

"Conferral" is one of the popular methods to apply for citizenship . Under this method, you must hold a permanent residency for the last 12 months and have been living in the country on a valid visa for the previous four years.

PR holders below 60 years would also require to sit a citizenship test.

8. Do Australian Companies Sponsor PR?

The following are the Employer Sponsored PR visas:

Employer Nominated Scheme - Subclass 186

It is a permanent employer-sponsored visa program that enables international employees to apply for an Australian permanent residency in regional and non-regional areas in Australia.

There are two categories in this scheme such as:

Temporary Residence Transition stream

Direct Entry stream

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme - Subclass 187

The visa program allows international employees to apply for Australian permanent residence. This option is available only for existing eligible subclass 457 or 482 transitional workers. Also, both the sponsor and the position must be in a regional location in Australia.

9. Which State in Australia Is Easy To Get PR?

Tasmania offers a convenient way to access Australian PR and citizenship . The absence of an occupation ceiling makes it an excellent place for overseas workers who wish to settle in Australia. It implies that you can still find numerous other options if your occupation isn't on the Skilled Occupation List.

Other options that you can consider for PR are New South Wales and South Australia. Where New South Wales is ideal for pursuing higher studies and employment, South Australia is one of the most economical Australian states where you can reside permanently.

10. What Is The Fastest Way To Get PR in Australia?

The Global Talent Independent Program, a new visa option, is the quickest way to get an Australia PR.

Launched in November 2019, the program supports highly skilled professionals to obtain an Australian PR across seven sectors, including Ag-Tech, Med-Tech, Cybersecurity, space, Data Science, FinTech, and energy and mining technology.

Moreover, GTI demands that applicants show the potential of earning above the threshold of AUD 153,600 annually and have been nominated in their same profession.

Candidates who meet the criteria and whose Expression of Interest meets success can apply online under the Distinguished Talent visa (Subclass 124) if living outside Australia and the Distinguished Talent Visa (Subclass 858) if living in Australia when applying.

With no age criteria, English language test, or skills assessment, GTI attracts several aspiring Australian immigrants who otherwise cannot obtain Australian PR. The flexibility it offers in assessing the visa application makes it a faster way to get a PR visa in Australia.

The time required to process an Australian PR application via the GTI varies from case to case. In most cases, it is in the range of 14 days to three months.

11. Is Getting PR in Australia Difficult?

Yes. It has become challenging for aspirants to get a PR in Australia for numerous reasons.

Reducing the number of PR grants

Increasing immigrant population

The rising local population is, in turn, leading to rising property prices and unemployment. Key cities like Sydney and Melbourne are already facing the pressure of population and resources.

Introduction of new and stringent visa policies by the Department of Home Affairs

As the country progresses towards regional development, it values experienced candidates in different niches. So, students, professionals, temporary residents, etc., hopping courses with no related work experience will have difficulty getting a PR for Australia.

All these reasons are making it difficult for PR seekers in Australia.

These are a few of the jobs you might want to pursue following the completion of your program.

After completing your program, you will be well-equipped to become an instructor in the business or management field yourself. You could also enter the private market as a member of a company or as an external consultant brought in to improve processes.

  • Management Consultant

Companies seldom need to look for experts who can help them drive further success as they hire business consultants to collaborate with the organization to identify the appropriate business solutions. They may also build relationships with vendors and create programs that can meet a company’s business goals. Consultants can deal with various organizational issues. Still, they will routinely need to be both analytical in their approach to the data and collaborative in dealing with people.

  • Business Professor

Business professors work at university level business schools and are typically expected to lecture students in their area of expertise. Professors are also often called upon to perform their independent research to publish in academic journals. Some of the skills acquired as a part of doctoral work in management are transferable to the public policy field, like data analysis and setting business policies. As a policy analyst, you will be tasked to review, collaborate, and provide feedback with policies and aid in developing new proposals. This role requires analysts to perform an in-depth analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data during policy development.

  • Chief Executive Officers

Developing strategic plans for organizations is the prime purpose of the executives. These professionals consider the time required to implement change, the processes involved, and the overall costs. Executives also oversee various departments and cultivate positive relationships throughout the organization to enhance performance.

One of the advantages of the doctorate in management is the ability to enter a wide variety of fields after completing your program. This flexible degree suits both the independent-minded who want to act as consultants or prefer a consistent corporate environment.

Many organizations are now hiring change managers. These professionals are innovators who analyze and implement practical and critical organizational changes to improve the business.
