It offers high-end greeting cards to fill a niche in the market serving pet owners who don’t want the mess of a traditionally-captured paw print, which usually involves ink or plaster. Paw Print Post’s ideal customer is a woman who owns a cat or a dog, and considers herself a “dog mom” or a “cat mom.” Given the importance people in North America place on their pets, and that the pet industry generates $100 billion a year globally, there’s a market not only for traditional customized cards for major holidays, but also a line of cards recognizing milestones like a pet’s adoption or birthday. Given that the cards are customized and produced in North America, they’re priced as a premium card, with volume discounts for larger orders. Paw Print Post will promote its products through a mix of industry trade shows, partnerships with established pet products, and digital advertising. Paw Print Post is pre-launch currently, and projects earning over $1,000 a month within 3 months of launch. The business is run by Jane Matthews, founder, who has extensive experience in the pet industry and formal training as a graphic designer. 3 Company overview Business structure Paw Print Post will operate as a sole proprietorship run by the owner, Jane Matthews. Nature of the business Paw Print Post sells unique, one-of-a-kind digitally printed cards that are customized with a pet’s unique paw prints. Industry Paw Print Post operates in the pet industry primarily, and sells goods that could also be categorized as part of the greeting card industry. Background information Jane Matthews, the founder of Paw Print Post, has a long history in the pet industry and working with animals, and was recently trained as a graphic designer. She’s combining those two loves to capture a niche in the market: unique greeting cards customized with a pet’s paw prints, without needing to resort to the traditional (and messy) options of casting your pet’s prints in plaster or using pet-safe ink to have them stamp their “signature.” Business objectives Jane will have Paw Print Post ready to launch at the Big Important Pet Expo in Toronto, to get the word out among industry players and consumers alike. After two years in business, Jane aims to drive $150,000 in annual revenue from the sale of Paw PRint Post’s signature greeting cards, and have expanded into two new product categories. Team Jane Matthews is the sole full-time employee of Paw Print Post, but hires contractors as needed to support her workflow and fill gaps in her skill set. Notably, Paw Print Post has a standing contract for 5 hours a week of virtual assistant support with Virtual Assistants Pro. 4 Market analysis Market size Research about the market for Paw Print Post showed that Americans will spend more than $70 billion on their pets in 2018, and the global pet market is $100 billion annually. While this includes basics like food and vet care, the market is also expanding in pet tech and other auxiliary pet products, which is where Paw Print Post fits in the market. Additionally, 7 billion greeting cards are purchased every year, with retail sales estimated at $7.5 billion globally. Sales are driven by women, and while the average price is between $2 to $4, the full price range spans from under $1 to $10. SWOT analysis Positive Negative Internal Strengths Weaknesses External - Strong experience with the pet - No experience in logistics or industry and understanding of fulfillment customer profile - Formal graphic design training - Existing connections in the industry for potential partnerships Opportunities Threats - Strong growth in pet market - Highly competitive market - Millennials are investing more - Low barriers to entry in their pets Competitive analysis Paw Print Post has competitors in each of the two markets it intersects. Greeting cards While there are no greeting card companies offering customization based on paw prints, there are artists who sell greeting cards customized with artwork of your pet, although they’re typically at a very high price point given the labor-intensive process of creating custom art. Beyond that, one of the biggest competitive forces in the greeting card industry for Paw Print Post is the 5 convenience factor. Pet lovers may decide too late that they’d like a custom card, and opt for a card they can buy in person instead. Paw print mementos Additionally, there are several products in the market that help pet owners immortalize their pet’s paw prints. These include kits to create a cast of your pet’s print in plaster, and kits to create an ink paw print on paper. Many of these options are time-intensive and can be messy, especially as it involves extended cooperation from your pet. Differentiation Paw Print Post will primarily rely on differentiation to stand out in the market, with segmentation as a secondary strategy. While there are multiple categories of competitors and substitutes for their product, Paw Print Post has a much more convenient and unique offer for pet lovers. Paw Print Post will not compete on price, and will focus on owning its initial product category before expanding. 6 Products and services Paw Print Post’s flagship product is a line of greeting cards that are customized with a pet’s unique footprint, with no ink or messy crafting required. Instead, customers send a digital image of their pet’s paw to Paw Print Post, and the image is processed to isolate and add contrast to the paw print. That isolated print is then added to the front or the interior of several different card options, including traditional calendar celebrations and pet-specific moments like: ● Welcoming a new pet ● Condolences for the loss of a pet ● Pet birthdays ● Pet adoption milestones ● Finishing a training course ● Starting work as a service pet As the custom paw prints can be placed inside or outside the card, they can serve as artwork on the card, or a way for pet lovers to send a card “from” their pet using their paw print as a signature. Customer segmentation Paw Print Post’s ideal customer is a woman who has a cat or a dog and lives in North America. She’s between the ages of 25 and 55, doesn’t have children, and is comfortable buying products online, ordering at least once a week from online vendors. She has a university-level degree and earns over $50,000 a year. She values her time highly, and isn’t opposed to calling herself a “cat mom” or “dog mom,” and has friends who feel the same. Marketing plan Based on Paw Print Post’s ideal customer, here’s an overview of the marketing plan. Price Given that the greeting cards from Paw Print Post are customized, and that they save the significant time and effort of capturing a paw print using more traditional methods, they’re priced at the higher end of the market. A single card costs $9.50, while bundles of identical cards reduce the price, with three for $20 and six for $30. Product Paw Print Post’s greeting cards are solving a specific problem—pet owners want custom, high-end products featuring their pet, and a paw print is a unique and affordable way to do so. Since pet owners only need to take a digital image of their pet’s paw, it’s a lower-effort way to customize cards than what exists in the market currently. 7 Promotion Paw Print Post will rely on three main promotional strategies. Given Jane Matthew’s experience in the pet industry, she has identified multiple leading trade shows that would be worth the investment to get the word out about her business. Additionally, her existing relationships give her several opportunities to pursue partner promotions with established products. Finally, digital ads on both Facebook and Instagram will help her reach Paw Print Post’s ideal customers. Place Paw Print Post will be run as an online store, given the nature of the card-creation process and the need for digital images. Customers can place their orders at pawprintpost.ca, and will receive their orders at their home after the relevant shipping windows. 8 Logistics and operations plan The logistics of creating and shipping Paw Print Post’s products are a crucial differentiator for the business. Suppliers Jane has connected with several local print shops to gather prices for one-off prints, and given that each item needs to be made to order, sourcing cheaper options offshore in bulk is not an option for Paw Print Post. Production Once a customer sends their digital image, it takes about five minutes to fully process the image using a preset in Adobe Lightroom and further editing in Photoshop, and the local print shops offer a 1-to-2 day turnaround for custom orders. Each custom card will cost $2 for set-up and $0.75 for each print, so the costs for each bundle offered are: ● One card: $2.75 (Price: $9.50, Margin: $6.75) ● Three cards: $4.25 (Price: $20.00, Margin: $15.75) ● Six cards: $6.50 (Price: $30.00, Margin: $23.50) Facilities Jane works out of her home office to process the images and ship orders, and all contractors maintain their own office facilities. Equipment While Paw Print Post already owns the required software and hardware to process the images, it’s crucial to the business that both are maintained. In the case of a breakdown, both would need to be replaced immediately. Shipping and fulfilment Paw Print Post will fulfill orders using Shopify Shipping for the foreseeable future, and may look into local fulfillment options or contractors to help scale if orders take off, or during busy seasons. Inventory Given the custom nature of the cards, Paw Print Post does not hold inventory and all orders are created as they come in. 9 Financial plan Paw Print Post has not yet completed their financial projections, but when they do they’ll be filling out this spreadsheet template to create an income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow statement. 10

PAW Print Printer FAQS

What Tier / Price is set for my printer?

Visit the PAW Print Pricing and Printer Tiers page for a complete listing of campus PAW Print printers and associated pricing.

Printer Tiers are set by volume. What if our department printer increases volume? Will its Tier change and will we save money?

IT will review print volumes in 2018 over Spring Break  and then a final review in September 2018. Volumes for the fleet will be analyzed over a 12 month cycle and devices whose volume have shifted enough to move tiers will be reclassified. Devices that move tiers will have their per-print price charges changed per the prices posted here . Price adjustments will be on a going-forward basis (i.e. if a printer moves from Tier 2 to 3 in March of 2018, all prints from March onward will be charged at Tier 3 rates).

How do we order new printers?

WCU's current PAW Print service is provided via a contract with Ricoh. This contract sunsets in March of 2019. WCU will be going through an RFP process to replace this contract in 2018. One of the requirements of this new contract will be a complete site-wide refresh. Between now and March 2019, absent a catastrophic device failure that is unable to be repaired by Ricoh, or a mission-critical business need for a specific unit or area, no new printers will be ordered. If you do have a need please contact the IT Help Desk to record your request. IT will evaluate each request on a case-by-case basis and respond as soon as possible.

Cat Cash FAQS

I have money on my Cat Card but it will not allow me to print. What's going on?

Printing is charged to the Cat Cash debit account. This should not be confused with any meal plan funds (also known as "declining balance" or "db" funds) that may also be associated with your Cat Card. Monies paid for campus food service meal plans are not transferable to the Cat Cash debit account. You may check your current Cat Cash account balance at any time via the myWCU Portal .  Please see the Cat Card Office page for more information on Cat Cash.

My print job didn't print but it charged my Cat Cash balance anyway. Can I get a refund?

Yes. Contact  the IT Help Desk at (828) 227-7487 or online at the  IT Help Self-Service portal , or the Technology Commons desk in the Hunter Library. Please be ready to provide the time, location, and document type you were trying to print. If it is determined there was a malfunction, IT will contact the Cat Card office on your behalf to process the refund. Alternatively, you may visit the Cat Card office in the Brown Building personally.

General FAQS

If my multi-page document has a page with color, will the whole document be charged as color?

No. If you have a 10 page document with only 1 page with color content, you should be charged for 9 black and white pages, and one color page. If you are charged at the color rate for all document pages, contact the IT Help Desk at (828) 227-7487 or online at the IT Help Self-Service portal  for assistance.

I have a university form that has color elements. Can I print it in black and white to save on costs?

Probably! Any requirement for color on forms is determined by the department or entity issuing the form. There is no PAW Print requirement that forms be printed in color. Check with the form's author for any specific printing or formatting requirements.

How do we go about getting additional training for faculty/staff in our department?

Please  contact the IT Help Desk at (828) 227-7487 or online at the  IT Help Self-Service portal  for assistance. When sending a print job from my faculty/staff computer, I am not prompted to select/choose my billing code. Why not? If departments have assigned their employees only one billing code, the system will not prompt single billing code users to choose their billing code. Because these employees have only one billing code available to them, the system automatically assigns their code to the print job and bypasses the billing code prompt. However, single billing code users should always be prompted to accept or decline the cost of the job. If an employee has been assigned multiple departmental billing codes, the user will be prompted to select/choose their appropriate billing code from a drop down list. If an employee is certain they were assigned multiple billing codes, but are not prompted to select/choose a billing code and/or are not prompted to accept or decline the cost of the print job, please contact the  IT Help Desk  at (828) 227-7487 or online at the  IT Help Self-Service portal  for assistance. When sending a print job from my faculty/staff computer, I am not prompted to accept or decline the cost of my print job. Why not? Users should always be prompted to accept or decline the cost of a print job. The cost accept/decline prompt feature allows users a last chance to make or alter their document printing decisions, prior to actually printing their document. It also helps alert users if there is a possible print overcharge (see question on color documents, above).  If a user is not prompted to accept or decline the cost of their print job, please contact the  IT Help Desk  at (828) 227-7487 or online at the  IT Help Self-Service portal  for assistance.

If I duplex print or copy, do I have to pay the same cost for the front side as well as the backside despite using one piece of paper?

Yes. Regardless of paper size, the WCU PAW Print system offers a single-sided black & white page price and a single-sided color page price per printer tier for all 8.5”x11”, 8.5”x14”, and 11”x17” sizes of paper. In order for us to simplify the system pricing structure involving various page sizes and make this one price offer to campus, both sides of a duplex page will be charged the same single page price dependent on the printer tier. The incentive for the WCU campus community to print duplex is simply a conscious decision to choose conservation and sustainability over potential waste.

My WCU CatCard was issued to me prior to 2007. Will it work with the PAW Print system? If not, what do I do?

CatCards issued prior to 2007 are not compatible with PAW Print. To obtain a new CatCard, visit the CatCard Office located in Brown Hall. In exchange for your old CatCard, the CatCard Office will create and provide you with a new card at no cost.

These templates can be used to create so many different craft projects. When using the paw print outlines for crafts with kids, use them in projects such as paw print ornaments, a paw print bookmark, or paw printing painting projects.

Paw Print Ornament

To make a paw print ornament, you will first choose which paw print outline to use. Next you will print out your outline, cut it out, and create a stencil from this outline.

paw print outlines

Trace the outline onto an ornament background. You can make an ornament out of wood, soft dough, paper, fabric, etc. Once you have traced your paw print outline onto the ornament, color the paw print in, paint the paw print, or create a glitter paw print.

The paw print with the heart shaped paw would be the perfect paw print outline to use for this project. You can write the name of your favorite pet into the heart and hang it on your tree for the holiday’s.

A cute idea would be to use this for a small Christmas tree dedicated to the pets in your life.

This is a great project, because you can use whatever materials you have around the house.

Paw Print Bookmark

Making a simple paw print bookmark is easy. Cut out your bookmark shape from a piece of heavy paper. Then choose the paw print outline you would like for your project. Print out the paw print and use a stencil or glue the paw print onto your bookmark.

This craft is easy for little ones. My preschooler loves creating puppy and kitty themed crafts.

Give these bookmarks to the book lovers in your life. They can be used as anytime gifts, mother’s day presents, father’s day presents, or as a stocking stuffer.

Paw Print Painting

There are many painting projects you can do with your paw print outlines.

Print the paw prints out, and then use them as a stencil on all sorts of different materials. Trace the stencil onto your material of choice and cut out. Then dab your stamp into paint and put onto paper.

paw print outlines

The materials you can use are ones easily found around the house. Styrofoam, potatoes, or sponges are just some of the things I have turned into stamps to use for craft projects with my children.

This is the perfect frugal DIY project anyone can do with recycled materials.

Are you a fan of scrapbooking or vinyl decals? I have provided you with a “Fur Mama” paw print PNG file with a transparent background to use with your Cricut or other print and cut out machines.

paw print outlines

Make sure that the software for your product uses a PNG file format. Create a card, scrapbook page, vinyl decal sticker for your car, or decal for your tumbler with this paw print PNG file.

Use this clip art file for your next paw print project, and create a gift the fur mama in your life will always cherish.

Halloween is right around the corner, and there are paw print outlines of all shapes to create a pumpkin lantern honoring your furry friends.

To do this project, you will choose the paw print outline of your choice. Use one big paw print, or mix and match sizes to create a pumpkin covered in prints.

Print out your template, cut out, and use it as a stencil on your pumpkin. Next, tape the design to the pumpkin and then use a knife to cut the paw prints out.

Finally, Illuminate your pumpkin and enjoy your new cute paw print pumpkin lantern.

Do you want to honor your favorite furry friend, or love of animals, with a piece of forever art? The paw print outlines can be used as flash art for your next paw print tattoo.

Consider creating your own tattoo idea by printing out the paw print outlines and then drawing a mandala design in them. You can also add your pets’ name.

There are many paw print outlines to choose from. Be creative and take your love for animals to the next level!

What will you use your free paw outlines for?

The project ideas for these templates are endless! Print them out and make your next budget friendly project with them. Share these free paw print outlines with the other animal lovers in your life. Everyone will love crafting with them.

Celebrate the pet owners in your life with these paw print outlines.

How To Create a Lean Business Plan (2024)

Learn how to create your own lean business plan, with a step by step guide and an example, in this article.

There are two types of entrepreneurs: those who start a business with careful planning and those who jump right into it without a formal business plan. Both offer avenues to success, but starting a business with a plan helps you visualize that path—and, more importantly, stay the course.

But sometimes your business plan is too long or comprehensive for your needs or audience. That’s when your lean business plan comes into play.

What is a lean business plan?

A lean business plan is a shortened version of your full comprehensive business plan. Lean business plans are useful for when you need to modify your plan for a specific audience. Typically the lean business plan is for internal use. For example, if you want to share your business plan as part of the onboarding process for new hires, you may use a lean business plan to avoid overwhelming them with too much information.

While a detailed business plan may have lots of information and full paragraphs, your lean business plan includes only the most important, need-to-know information. You might use more bullet points and lists in your lean business plan than in your regular business plan.

Further, your full business plan talks about the what, why, who, where , and how behind your business idea. Your lean business plan, on the other hand, zeroes in on the how behind your business.

What are the benefits of a lean business plan?

  • A lean business plan enables a business to quickly adapt to new market conditions
  • It distills the business’s offerings to their essence
  • It highlights what sets the business apart from competitors.
  • It takes less time to create
  • It makes it easy for investors and business partners to grasp the company’s mission

Lean business plan template

Your lean business plan template should have the following sections:

  • Executive summary (optional)

Company description

Market analysis, products and services, customer segmentation.

  • Marketing plan

Logistics and operations plan

Many times, you can also omit the financials section of your lean business plan.

If you want to follow along, consider starting with this business plan template as a base and then trimming it down to fit your lean business planning needs.

How to write a lean business plan

For the purposes of this article, we’re going to take our fictional Paw Print Post business plan example and modify it to be a lean business plan. If you don’t already have a full business plan, you can follow this business plan writing guide to get started. Then you can adapt it as follows to suit your lean business planning needs.

Executive summary

The executive summary should have bullet points highlighting what’s to come in the rest of your lean business plan document. The job of the executive summary is to draw your readers in and get them interested in the information that follows. Call out exciting or surprising bits of information to pique their interest.

  • List your company’s key points: name, business model, product/service, USP.
  • Identify the target market and financial highlights.
  • Use bullet points to organize these details in a concise manner.
  • Write a draft of your executive summary, ensuring it’s compelling and brief.

In the company description, provide a clear and concise overview of your business. Explain what you sell, your business model , and your business type.

  • Summarize what your company does in two sentences.
  • Define your business structure and mention the founder’s background.
  • Write down your short-term and long-term business objectives.
  • Create a bulleted list incorporating these points.

The market analysis section highlights the research you’ve done to validate your business idea. You’ll want to outline the fact that there’s a sizable audience who is willing to spend money with a business like yours.

Your market analysis section of your lean business may also consist of a SWOT analysis of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. You may also summarize your competitive analysis , perhaps listing your competitors and their strengths and weaknesses.

  • Gather research data on your industry and target market.
  • Perform a SWOT analysis for your business.
  • Identify key competitors and note their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Bullet your findings for inclusion in the lean plan.

This section of your lean business plan will outline what exactly you plan to offer for sale for your customers.

  • List all products or services your company offers.
  • Describe the customer experience from start to finish.
  • Keep descriptions clear and brief.

This section of your lean business plan puts your audience into groups based on shared characteristics. Customer segmentation is helpful because it allows you to define specific audiences and create targeted promotions and messaging that appeal directly to those groups.

  • Define your primary customer segment.
  • List the characteristics that define this segment.

Marketing strategy

The marketing plan should outline your pricing strategy , promotional channels, and sales venues.

  • Detail your pricing model and justify it based on your market analysis.
  • List your main marketing and promotional strategies.
  • Define where and how customers can purchase your products or services.

This section will cover the day-to-day operations, including suppliers, production, and shipping.

  • List your suppliers and their role in your business.
  • Detail the production process step by step.
  • Explain your shipping and fulfillment strategy.

For each section, ensure you focus on the essentials that matter most to your business’s strategic planning and operation. Keep it concise and actionable with bullet points for easy reading.

Lean business plan example

Here is a lean business plan example you can use to inspire your own.

COMPANY: Paw Print Post

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Paw Print Post is a sole proprietorship that sells customized greeting cards featuring a pet’s unique paw print. Founder Jane Matthews runs the business using her extensive experience in the pet industry and formal graphic design training.

The pet industry generates $100 billion each year, globally. Paw Print Post’s high-end greeting cards fill a niche in the market serving pet owners who don’t want the mess of a traditionally captured paw print involving ink or plaster. All customers need to do is send in a digital image of their pet’s paw.

Paw Print Post’s ideal customer is a woman based in North America who considers herself a “cat mom” or “dog mom.” These greeting cards are priced as premium cards with volume discounts for larger orders.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Type of business : sole proprietorship run by owner Jane Matthews

Industry: pet industry (primary); some goods could be categorized in the greeting card industry

Business objectives:

  • Immediate: Launch at the Big Important Pet Expo in Toronto
  • Two-year goals: (1) Drive $150,000 in annual revenue from the sale of Paw Print Post’s signature greeting cards; (2) Expand into two new product categories

Team: Jane Matthews is the sole full-time employee

  • Contractors hired as needed to support her workflow and fill gaps in her skill set.
  • Standing contract for five weekly hours of virtual assistant support with Virtual Assistants Pro.

MARKET ANALYSIS

SWOT analysis example

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Paw Print Post’s flagship product is a line of greeting cards customized with a pet’s unique paw print. Here’s how it works:

Customers send a digital image of their pet’s paw

Paw Print Post edits the image and adds it to the front or interior of several card options, including:

  • New pet welcome
  • Pet loss condolences
  • Pet birthdays
  • Adoption milestones
  • Training course completion
  • Service pet work commencement

CUSTOMER SEGMENTATION

  • A woman who owns a cat or dog
  • Lives in North America, 25–55 years old
  • No children
  • Shops online at least once a week
  • University-level degree
  • $50,000 average annual salary
  • Values her time
  • May refer to herself as a “cat mom” or “dog mom”

MARKETING STRATEGY

  • Price. A single card costs $9.50, while bundles of identical cards reduce the price, with three for $20 and six for $30.
  • Product. Paw Print Post’s greeting cards solve a specific problem—pet owners want custom, high-end products featuring their pet, and a paw print is a unique and affordable way to do so. Since pet owners only need to take a digital image of their pet’s paw, it’s a lower-effort way to customize cards than what exists in the market currently.
  • Promotion. Leading industry trade shows, partner promotions with established products, and digital ads on both Facebook and Instagram.
  • Place. Paw Print Post will have an online store at pawprintpost.ca where customers can place their orders. Paw Print Post will ship all orders to customers’ chosen addresses.

LOGISTICS AND OPERATIONS PLAN

Suppliers: Local print shops for one-off prints, given that each item needs to be made to order, and cheaper offshore options won’t work.

Production:

  • Customer places order and sends their digital image
  • Jane takes five minutes to process the image in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop before sending to the local printer
  • Local print shops offer one- to two-day turnaround for custom orders. Each custom card will cost $2 for setup and 75¢ for each print, so the costs for each bundle offered are:
  • One card: $2.75 (Price: $9.50, margin: $6.75)
  • Three cards: $4.25 (Price: $20, margin: $15.75)
  • Six cards: $6.50 (Price: $30, margin: $23.50)

Facilities: Jane processes images and ships orders from her home office; all contractors maintain their own facilities.

Equipment: Paw Print Post already owns the required software and hardware to process the images.

Shipping and fulfillment: Paw Print Post will fulfill orders using Shopify Shipping and may look into local fulfillment options or contractors to help scale if needed.

Inventory. Paw Print Post does not hold inventory and all orders are created as they come in.

Lean business plan FAQ

How do you write a lean business plan.

  • Start with an executive summary: Write a high-level overview of your business strategy, objectives, and how you plan to achieve them.
  • Describe your business: Detail the products/services you offer, how you will price them, how you plan to market them, and how you plan to organize the business.
  • Identify your target market: Describe your target customer, the size of the market, and how you plan to reach them.
  • Outline your financials: Provide a financial overview of your business, including projected income and expenses, break-even analysis, and financial goals.
  • Define your operating plan: Outline the day-to-day operations of the business, from staffing to inventory management to customer service.
  • Provide supporting documents: Include any supporting documents, such as résumés, contracts, or legal documents.

How long is a lean business plan?

A lean business plan is typically shorter than a traditional business plan, usually no more than two pages in length. It usually consists of a brief overview of the business, the current situation, the goal, the action plan, budget and timeline, and a conclusion.

What are the 4 types of business plans?

  • Startup business plan: A detailed document used to define and plan your business’s objectives, strategies, and tactics.
  • Growth business plan: A plan used to identify and capitalize on opportunities for growth.
  • Internal business plan: A plan used to assess the internal strengths and weaknesses of a company.
  • Strategic business plan: A plan used to set long-term goals and strategies for achieving them.

How is a lean plan different from the traditional business plan?

A lean plan is a simplified version of a traditional business plan that focuses on the core elements of the business, such as the mission, strategy, and key activities. It emphasizes identifying and testing assumptions, keeping plans short and simple, and focusing on the customer. The traditional business plan is more comprehensive, with a greater focus on financials, market analysis, and operations. It also requires a longer timeline and more resources to complete.

5 (good) reasons to consider Pawprint if you're a business leader

Man at desk writes notes from Pawprint website

Pawprint is an employee engagement tool for climate action. It embeds green thinking into the heart of a business to nurture an employee-led eco-movement. It also promotes employee wellbeing, uncovers areas where money is being spent unnecessarily and demonstrates commitment to net zero.

Call me biased, but Pawprint is an essential future-proofing tool for any company. I’m not expecting you to take my word for it, of course. Read on to discover more about how Pawprint delivers 360 degree board value .

Better acquisition and retention of staff

Employees are increasingly searching for employment which aligns with their morals. In fact, Deloitte’s 2020 Global Millennial survey dubbed upcoming talent ‘the purpose-driven generation’; a generation which is set to make up 75% of the workforce by 2025 .

In a survey Pawprint commissioned last year, we found that 59% of employees felt it was important or very important that their employer had a strategy to tackle climate change. After a historic number of resignations in 2021 , it’s more important than ever for businesses looking to attract and retain talent to demonstrate that they are willing to do the work when it comes to the climate crisis.

There are many ways to do this, for example by setting science-based targets aligned to 1.5°C. To bring employees along on the journey, demonstrate commitment and involve the voices of their diverse workforce, companies like CGI, Vodafone, and Skyscanner are using Pawprint.

Overall employee engagement and wellbeing

‍ The most engaged teams see a 41% reduction in absenteeism, a 17% increase in productivity and 59% less turnover – these people want to show up to work. By connecting with the workforce on an issue they care about (the climate crisis – see above), you’re encouraging people to bring more of themselves – their interests and passions – to work. You’re engaging them!

Another benefit of Pawprint lies in its potential to alleviate eco-anxiety – a condition which is on the rise , particularly in younger generations. In an opinion piece written for the British Medical Journal in late 2021, it was suggested that ‘[t]he best chance of increasing optimism and hope in the eco-anxious young and old is to ensure they have access to the best and most reliable information on climate mitigation. Especially important is information on how they could […] contribute to greener choices at an individual level '.

Pawprint uses a non-judgemental tone to share reliable climate information here on the Eco Blog , and teaches users the small but impactful ways they can do their bit to help. We can help to soothe eco anxiety. Lastly, while individuals are learning how to reduce their impact on the planet, they’re also learning new ways to save money. For example, by bleeding your radiator, you make your home more efficient to warm. This saves energy; that’s carbon emissions and money! As the cost of living rises, Pawprint can help answer the question, ‘what’s in it for me?’ when it comes to climate action.

Measurable financial savings

Pawprint tracks employees’ commute and business travel emissions. By doing so, it also inadvertently maps areas where financial savings could be made. For example, if in-person meetings that require flights are happening regularly, travel emissions will be high. This data can be used to spark a conversation around an organisation’s travel policy—is it time to start encouraging more virtual meet ups? Doing so would reduce Scope 3 emissions and save money; a win-win all around!

Brand building through credible CSR efforts

There is no brand negativity that comes from being able to say: ‘We are fully engaging our employees on our sustainability agenda, and empowering them with information to limit their own impact as much as is reasonably possible.’

Our partners have found that Pawprint can bolster sales pitches too. When selling to companies that have an ESG agenda (which is becoming more common by the day), a tool like Pawprint is a strong indicator that you’re taking environmental targets seriously.

Leaving a legacy to be proud of

Good leaders join a business with the aim to leave it better than they found it. Great leaders realise that this extends wider than simply adding commercial value. To ensure your organisation is thriving in the future we’re all fighting for, you need to get it firmly on the right side of history today.

To round off this article, I’ll leave you with a recent Tweet by organisational psychologist Adam Grant :

'Too many people spend their lives being dutiful descendants instead of good ancestors. The responsibility of each generation is not to please their predecessors. It's to improve things for their offspring. It's more important to make your children proud than your parents proud ’
