F irst, please tell me what your interest in rugby is, and where it comes from.

Let’s discuss your first book.

Well, before we do that, it’s important to say that this list is a rugby union list, so these are essential books for rugby union. There would be a different five books for rugby league, which has a different literature.

Could you just, for someone utterly ignorant, describe the difference between rugby union and rugby league?

Aha! Well, if you really want to know about the difference, you need to read Tony Collins’s Social History of English Rugby Union, which brings a lot of different sources together for the first time. One of the things Collins explains is how rugby broke off into the two different sections.

How did it?

Well, the main difference is that rugby league is a professional game. Originally, rugby was an amateur sport, and in the late 1800s there were questions about broken time payments – people taking time off work, especially in the North, to play rugby; they wanted to be remunerated for that. The people playing rugby in London were mainly from private schools, with private incomes, and therefore they didn’t think anyone should be paid and that the amateurism was very important. In the North they said, ‘Blow to that, we are going to pay our players,’ and they became rugby league, a game for 13 players (whereas there are 15 in rugby union). Rugby union went professional about a hundred years later.

Are the rules different?

They are, yes.

Well, there are whole books about it! I would need to go and write an MA before I could explain the difference. I mean, yes, they are slightly different.

But the Social History of English Rugby Union describes how rugby league broke off from rugby union. Anyone looking for an essential book about rugby should read this book. It’s about where the game started – did it start at Rugby…?

Let’s discuss This Sporting Life.

This is actually a book about rugby league, but – like some players of rugby – it can play both codes. This book really goes across both codes, and is about the harshness of the game on the pitch, and how that can relate to life off the pitch as well. It is just a very accurate, gritty representation of how the hero can be expressive on the pitch among men, and much less expressive in the life he’s trying to lead. He breaks his nose in the second paragraph and loses two teeth, which immediately gets you into the book. There’s a film of this with Richard Harris in it.

What does the book say about life?

Well, it’s about a rugby league player in the North of England, and it was thought to be a regional novel. In fact, though, it’s a rugby novel, and it has stood the test of time. It’s about this player’s attempt to try and make sense of the world around him with this very limited appreciation of the world through rugby. The fact that it’s rugby league doesn’t really matter; it’s essential for gaining an insight into rugby because however interesting it is on the pitch, however interesting it is to play, there are limitations to the way in which an attitude that succeeds in rugby can succeed in life.

What attitude are you talking about?

Well, the aggression, and the loyalty to your teammates. Unquestioning loyalty is not always a useful quality to have in life.

It sounds quite military.

Yes. You have to rely on the other people to do what they’re doing, and you have to be confident that they will be backing you up.

Are you saying that rugby players have unsuccessful personal lives?

Your next book is Endless Winter.

This is a book written in 1993, just before the game went professional. Stephen Jones is the chief rugby writer for The Sunday Times, and has been for years. He realised that the pressure was on the game to change and to go professional to survive in the modern world. He writes this book looking to the past as well as the future; it’s written just on that tipping point, and he is standing on the hinge, perfectly placed to write that book. You get a fantastic insight into why it had to change, which is essential to understanding how it’s developed to the place where it is now.

What kind of insights are those? And why did the game have to change?

Your second-to-last book, Denis Lalanne’s Le Temps des Boni, is next.

France is essential to rugby history. You can’t have a list without a French book in it. If the French weren’t there, the game wouldn’t be the game as we know it today. It would just be a jamboree with former colonies and the Empire. The fact that France took up rugby through the 20th century meant that there was a platform for it to become a global game. If it had been an Empire-only game, it wouldn’t have been so attractive or have believed in itself that it could spread. France – and also, gradually, Italy – is embracing the game, so we know that it’s not something that’s limited to the culture of Empire.

Your final choice is Confessions of a Rugby Mercenary.

This is quite a recent book, and it represents the genre of player biography. A large part of sports books output is player biography and autobiography. John Daniell wrote this himself, and it’s good because he’s a star player but not a superstar player. He wasn’t an international. It’s an authentic picture of what it’s like on the inside now to be a professional rugby player, just below the top level. You get insight you wouldn’t get from the six star players who are treated in a special way to offset the obstacles of their life. It’s fantastically honest and very well-written. It’s about how professionalism has meant that the players can play with their personal pride intact, but it has compromised team spirit – and there’s an inevitable selfishness in the way that professional players need to approach the game in order to earn a living.

One last question. Who is the greatest rugby player of all time?

It’s almost certainly a Welshman. You pick between three or four. I think it probably has to be Gareth Edwards.

Provinces reject governance change, sparking fears of a “civil war” in New Zealand rugby

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Domestic provinces have overwhelmingly rejected a new governance plan for New Zealand Rugby in a move some observers fear will fracture the national sport along amateur and professional lines.

At a special general meeting Thursday, the 26 provincial unions voted down a new governance system which had been recommended by an independent panel and which was favored by the sport’s national organizers. They voted instead for a system which is closer to the status quo and ensures the provinces are represented on the NZR board.

The New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association, which represents the country’s professional players, had threatened to break away from the national body and set up a separate commercial entity if the new governance plan was not adopted.

In a statement released immediately after the vote, NZRPA chief executive Rob Nichol condemned the provinces, saying the governance changes had wide support from NZR, Super Rugby clubs, professional players and some provincial unions.

“The expert panel laid out what we needed to do perfectly in their recommendations,” he said. “It was a great opportunity for the game to make the changes required.

“It’s incredibly unfortunate we haven’t taken that opportunity and ended up with what the expert labeled status quo or worse.”

The general meeting voted 59-31 against the system recommended by the expert panel, and 61-31 in favor of an alternative proposal which ensures provinces are represented on the board. Provincial unions have differing numbers of votes depending on their size, and proposals needed a two-thirds majority to pass.

The panel findings were released last year in a report authored by David Pilkington. The report said the existing governance system is not fit for purpose in the professional era and change is urgently needed.

It said New Zealand has too many professional players and that the National Rugby Championship, contested by provincial unions, is not fit for purpose.

The report said necessary change is being delayed because NZR does not want to antagonize the provinces.

“The member unions are financially dependent on NZR. We would expect the national body to use this point of leverage to resolve these kinds of problems,” the report said.

The Pilkington report recommended the current NZR board should be replaced by a board of nine members selected by an independent appointment panel. Appointments would favor members with business or governance experience over rugby knowledge.

The alternative proposal, backed by the Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Hawkes Bay, Bay of Plenty, North Harbour and Northland unions, would reserve three places on a nine-member board for provincial representatives.

Fears of a “civil war” in New Zealand rugby have been heightened by a letter written by the NZRPA to New Zealand Rugby this week.

The letter warned that if the provincial unions get their way “the professional players will no longer pass to NZRU, via a collective employment agreement, the right to govern the professional game.”

“A new body will be established to govern the professional game in New Zealand. Directors appointed by the professional players will represent the players on this body and on other bodies such as NZRC (New Zealand Rugby Commercial).”

The rift between the professional and amateur ranks of rugby have been exacerbated by NZR’s decision last year to sell a percentage of its commercial rights to the California-based investment company Silver Lake.

The decision is seen to have accelerated the push for a more commercial governance model.

Farage’s decision ‘came as a surprise’, says ousted Clacton Reform candidate

Tony Mack is ‘disappointed’ to no longer be running but will support new party leader

The Reform UK candidate forced to make way for Nigel Farage has told supporters the decision “came as a surprise”.

Tony Mack, who was campaigning to be the next MP for Clacton-on-Sea , said he was “disappointed” to no longer be running.

However, he said he would support Mr Farage and told his campaign team to put aside any disappointment that he had about not standing in his home town.

Mr Farage will address supporters on Clacton Pier on Tuesday after announcing his decision on Monday to stand when he became the leader of Reform UK .

The Brexiteer declared “I’m back” as he returned to front-line politics in a speech, and vowed to lead a “ political revolt” to topple the Conservative Party .

He is standing in Clacton, which voted 70 per cent in favour of leaving the EU during the 2016 Brexit referendum and is currently held by Conservative Giles Watling who has a majority of 25,000.

Posting last night on his campaign social media page, Mr Mack told of his shock at Mr Farage’s announcement.

He said: “Whilst it came as a surprise to me and I am obviously disappointed to no longer be the parliamentary candidate in my hometown of Clacton. I believe that Reform UK have the right policies to guide our nation going forward and would be the best government for our country.

“I will do all I can to ensure Nigel’s victory in Clacton and will be urging my team to overcome any disappointment and unite behind Nigel and me as we continue to strive for a better future for the Clacton constituency and the United Kingdom.”

Mr Mack’s biography and campaign details have been removed from Reform UK’s Clacton constituency webpage and replaced with information about Mr Farage.

Mr Farage said there were “no circumstances whatsoever” in which Reform UK would stand aside for Tory candidates at the general election.

The new leader of Reform accused the Conservative Party of having “betrayed” Britain. He also claimed the Tories had “lost the election already”.

Asked if there were any circumstances in which Reform could stand aside for the Tories, Mr Farage told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Nope. There are no circumstances whatsoever. We have been betrayed by a Conservative Party that I gave considerable help to back in 2019 and boy did I.

“I got rid of Mrs [Theresa] May by forming the Brexit Party and they had their most crushing defeat in 200 years.

“I stood aside in over 300 seats for Boris Johnson and we were told that we would get control of our borders, we were told the immigration numbers would come down. They have exploded.

“I feel betrayed by them, millions of voters feel betrayed by them and even though there are some people in the Conservative Party who I fought with during Brexit and other battles I am afraid they are part of a party who are well past their sell-by date, the brand is ruined, they have lost the election already.”

Sometimes inspiration comes from those closest to you. That was certainly the case for New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach Keith Williams. The accomplished coach has been using rugby balls during OTAs and rookie minicamps while working drills with his wideouts . He does this to help with hand placement as well as the spread of hands and fingers. The process also makes a football feel much smaller the next time a player catches one.

Players have enjoyed it so much that they apparently have asked to do it more. The practice did not start with a rugby ball, however. The idea actually came about with a soccer ball—his daughter's soccer ball.

Kaya Williams just wrapped up her senior season as a defender for Lamar University soccer in 2023 after transferring from Jacksonville University. She receives credit from her dad for spurring the idea and developing one of the more intriguing NFL drills. It was during a private training session where Keith was working with some NFL wideouts alongside Kaya.

"I thought about I thought about it because my daughter plays soccer," Keith said. " And when I would work out Tyreek (Hill), (Davante Adams), (Brandin) Cooks and all those guys. She worked out with them, but she would be using her soccer balls. One day she threw me a soccer ball. I caught it and somebody threw me in football and like I felt like a freaking first-rounder when I caught the football."

Following the inspiration from there, Keith went on to workshop the idea. "So I went home and kind of went the garage," he said. "I played around with both a soccer ball and football and found out that there was something to it."

Keith would eventually moved over to rugby balls to better mimic the feel and shape of a football. The practice itself will not completely eradicate drops. But he explained that the implementation of this procedure keeps receivers from dropping passes because of bad hand technique. Instead isolating any concerns to other workable adjustments. It has proven successful already as there have not been many drops to note in the practices that have been open to media.

Beyond the physical adjustments one has to make in catching these rugby balls that are slightly larger than footballs, there is a mental element to it as well that may be just as important." Let's say someone threw you a basketball even if you weren't a basketball player, right?" he said. " You would catch it with your hands because like psychologically there's a notion in your brain that says no one body catches a basketball. So with a rugby ball, no one would think that body catch a rugby ball.

Whether considering the physical or psychological, the method works, and Keith is clear that the credit goes to Kaya for this one. "It started with my daughter," he said." If my daughter wouldn't have been out there, I'd never thought about it because she threw me a curveball."
