The deadline for submission of Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) was Friday 18 June to guarantee results by week commencing 9 August. On 25 February, Ofqual published the outcome to its consultation on ‘Alternative Arrangements for the Award of VTQs and other General Qualifications in 2021’ and on 24 March published the outcome of its further consultation on VTQ Contingency Regulatory Framework (VCRF).

We’re committed to keeping you at the forefront of all developments and with this in mind, we have released:

What is a ncfe qualification.

NCFE originally stood for Northern Council for Further Education, but it dropped the full name in the 1990s. Now known simply as NCFE. It’s the UK’s longest established awarding body, as well as one of the UK’s fastest growing, which means it’s highly respected for its professionalism and quality.

NCFE’s are highly reputable vocational and work-related courses, designed to accommodate the needs of employers for immediate full time employment and allow students to progress to higher education to degree level (through UCAS points).

A NCFE takes a practical approach to learning, without missing any of the important theory on the subject.

What’s included in the NCFE Level 3 full diploma (Adventurous Outdoor Activities)?

To be awarded the NCFE Level 3 Diploma (720) in Outdoor adventurous activities, learners are required to successfully complete 3 mandatory units and 9 optional units.

What are the entry requirements for NCFE Level 3 in Adventurous Outdoor Activities?

• 3 GCSE’s including English and Maths plus one other at 4 and above
• An interest in watersports/outdoor education
• Successful interview at UKSA

What’s the format of the NCFE Level 3 course?

During the 2 year course, you will be covering 60% theory and 40% practical. Your practical qualifications are:

• RYA First Aid
• RYA Safe and Fun
• RYA Short Range Radio
• RYA Powerboat level 2
• Foundation Safety and Rescue Training

Additional qualifications will include in year 2 an opportunity to work towards achieving

• RYA Dinghy instructor
• RYA Windsurf instructor

What could I do next after completing the NCFE Level 3 full diploma (Adventurous Outdoor Activities) qualification?

You could work as a watersports instructor in holiday companies in the UK and abroad if you are 18 and over, or there is an option to look into university as the maximum UCAS you can gain during the course is 112 UCAS Points.

You also have the opportunity to look into further training at UKSA such as our Superyacht Cadetship or our Professional Yachtmaster Offshore course.

Where is the my course delivered from?

Both courses are delivered at UKSA. However you have the access to all the Isle of Wight college facilities and student services as well as UKSA’s onsite facilities.

What could I do next after completing the Martime Foundation

You have many options after the Maritime Foundation regarding work opportunities this includes

• During this 2-year programme, 75% of your training will be practical with the remaining 25% theory

Are the courses funded?

If you are 16-18 the course is funded. If you are 18+, funding may be available on a case by case basis, so speak to the Isle of Wight College Student Services team – see below.

Is funding available for travel and meals?

You may be eligible for a bursary for travel to college and meals.

Do I have to go on the water?

The courses encourage and offer opportunities and experiences within the outdoor industry and an interest in sport is essential to help relate theory-based work.

Does UKSA run open days to find out about the FE courses and what UKSA is like?

At UKSA we run regular open days if you are interested in attending please sign up here

Does UKSA have career support in place to help me find my first job after the course?

At UKSA you will receive career support and mentoring advice including help with CV development and covering letters. The Education lecturers will also be available to help students with CV’s and cover letters as well as where to work and which companies have vacancies.

Do I need my own kit to do any of the courses?

UKSA has all the kit to do the course to keep you safe and warm outside, including wetsuits, buoyancy aids, spray tops and helmet. All you need to bring is some dinghy boots or old shoes to go in the water.

Where is the watersports training part of the course done?

The watersports activities are done in the River Medina at UKSA but also out in the Solent. When training out in the Solent you will be able to gain knowledge and experience of the tidal range, wind direction and how to control your vessel in any type of condition. You will have the opportunity to go on river trips in kayaks and canoes plus try stand up paddle boarding at UKSA. All windsurf training is taught at Thorness Bay, 4 miles down the road.

• 2 x 65ft Farrs
• 3 x Colgate 26ft Keelboats
• 3 x J80 Keelboats
• Dinghies, Kayaks, Windsurf boards and stand up paddleboard

What if I start the course and want to change, what are the options?

If within the first 6 weeks of your course you want to move to another FE course at UKSA or at college, this will still be possible. Talk to your tutor as soon as possible if this is the case.

If I’m over 18 and want to gain qualifications in watersports and/or sail training for recreation, what does UKSA offer?

Flexible learning

A qualification could be what you need to improve your career prospects and get your ideal job, yet you may be unable to attend college on a regular basis. Distance Learning with Shrewsbury Colleges Group gives you more flexibility, allowing you to study where and when you want. All you need is a commitment, as Distance Learning is not necessarily an easy option, especially if you are already working full-time. We offer specially prepared course materials, which combined with help and support from your subject teacher make your learning experience easily manageable.

All NCFE / CACHE Level 2 courses are free* if you meet the eligibility criteria. Many courses have flexible start dates so that you can enrol at almost any time during the year and each course’s length is dependent on the number of modules. You will have an individual study plan to help you fit your studies into your daily lifestyle, allowing you to meet the deadlines for submitting assignments.

• Be resident in England and live in a postcode area that is eligible for funding
• Learners must be aged 19 years or over as of the current academic year

Level 2 NCFE CACHE Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems With one in four people being diagnosed with a mental health problem, I feel it is important to learn more about mental health. I am halfway through my course and already I have a greater understanding of mental health and mental ill-health. Distance learning works very well for me. During the lockdown, whilst my salon was closed It was important for my own mental well-being to have the opportunity to learn remotely and since returning to work, studying at home fits in with a busier schedule.

VTQ information hub 2023 to 2024: key dates and deadlines

For Level 3, Level 1/2 and Level 2 vocational and technical qualifications (VTQs) used for progression and taken alongside or in place of A-levels and GCSEs.

Ofqual has worked with awarding organisations to compile the following information on key dates and deadlines for vocational and technical qualifications (VTQ) in 2024. 

This VTQ Information Hub is most relevant to school and college staff working in the administration or delivery of Level 3, Level 1/2 and Level 2 vocational and technical qualifications used for progression. It will help you prepare for the awarding organisation key dates and deadlines ahead of awarding in summer 2024. 

Please note, there are still deadlines that awarding organisations need centres to meet to ensure the timely delivery of results in August. It is important that centres ensure that activities take place early enough to ensure the awarding organisation deadlines are met.

Information is arranged by awarding organisation and then by qualification. You can download the combined data for all awarding organisations, or for each individual organisation.

If you’re a student who has recently been considering their education and employment options, you may have come across the term ‘NCFE’ before. There are lots of institutions and organisations who have a lot of influence on education in the UK, with NCFE being one of them. However, ‘NCFE’ is still unfamiliar to many students: what is it, and are NCFE qualifications recognised qualifications?

NCFE is an educational charity founded in 1848 and is one of the biggest awarding bodies for technical and vocational courses in the UK. It aims to offer students freedom to explore their options in employment and in education. NCFE, and the qualifications they offer, are recognised by employers, universities, and other awarding bodies such as Ofqual (which regulates NCFE). Some of their qualifications are also worth UCAS points.

Don’t worry if everything isn’t clear just yet. In this article, I’ll be explaining what NCFE is and who it’s recognised by!

What is NCFE?

NCFE is a recognised awarding organisation for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It is regulated by the UK’s leading awarding body, Ofqual. I’ll be talking about that later in this article, so keep reading to find out more.

NCFE offers qualifications in vocational and technical courses in a huge variety of fields. NCFE controls the design, development, and certification of all their qualifications, which range from Entry Level to Level 6.

NCFE is one of the largest awarding organisations of vocational and technical qualifications in the UK. It is also an educational charity. If you are unsure about what vocational courses are, check out this article from Think Student.

NCFE qualifications are designed to give students the freedom to explore their options, whether this is moving straight into employment or pursuing higher education.

What is NCFE accredited training?

If training has been accredited by NCFE, this means that it is of high quality and has been approved by an experienced educational qualification. You can find out more about what this means if you check out this article from the Online Learning College website.

According to this page of the NCFE website, “Accredited training allows individuals to achieve certification following completion of a course of your own design in a particular skill or sector, whilst receiving a stamp of approval from a recognised awarding organisation”.

Accredited training is useful for students whose qualifications may be in a small field or tailored to their specific experience.

By having a ‘stamp of approval’ from recognised awarding bodies such as NCFE, this helps students in small fields/niche job sectors to solidify their application by letting employers know their qualification is valid.

Accredited training, according to NCFE, also “can improve specific soft skills or technical skills amongst learners or employees, helping to provide a pool of talented individuals who are armed with the knowledge to go above and beyond in their career or roles”.

Do employers recognise NCFE qualifications?

Yes, employers definitely recognise NCFE qualifications. A big reason for recognition from key institutions like universities or employers in major sectors is if the qualification comes from a reputable and regulated awarding body.

Since NCFE is regulated by Ofqual, their qualifications will also be regulated and verified as legitimate high-standard qualifications – this means employers will absolutely recognise them!

Employers understand that there are plenty of education pathways. Even if you aren’t on a conventional pathway, as long as your education is proven to be of a high quality, employers will recognise your qualification!

NCFE also offer what they call Customised Qualifications, which are still accredited by NCFE, but they are unregulated (i.e., not regulated by other awarding bodies such as Ofqual).

If you are seeking employing with an unregulated Customised Qualification, NCFE advises that you should check with your employer, as it is up to them if they recognise your qualification or not. You can read more about this on this page of the NCFE website.

Do universities accept NCFE qualification?

Yes, some universities do accept NCFE qualifications. However, this varies by university, so if you’re unsure, you should check on your university’s website.

As stated on the NCFE website, linked here , “Large UK universities, including Russell Group institutions, support our qualifications. They accept these as a valid entry route to HE”.

The NCFE also recommend that you check entry requirements with your university, as universities set their own entry requirements, so NCFE qualifications may not always be included.

As I’ll talk about later in this article, some NCFE qualifications are worth UCAS points which means universities will accept them as a valid part of your application.

Below is a short list of some of the universities that accept NCFE qualifications:

• University of Cumbria – check out their specialised support for NCFE students on this page of their website.
• University of Hull – this page of their website has a list of accepted qualifications.

Are NCFE qualifications recognised by UCAS?

Yes, NCFE and the qualifications it offers are recognised by UCAS. However, only certain NCFE qualifications are recognised by UCAS (these are typically NCFE Level 3 qualifications). Similarly, only certain NCFE Level 3 qualifications are worth UCAS points.

This means that UCAS does recognise NCFE as a certified awarding body , even if UCAS points are only ascribed to particular qualifications within a qualification level.

Is NCFE recognised by Ofqual?

In case you aren’t aware, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations, and assessments in England.

Ofqual regulates vocational and technical qualifications, which are the qualifications that NCFE offer. You can read more about Ofqual and what they do on this page of the government website.

In terms of whether NCFE is recognised as a qualification provider by Ofqual, yes, NCFE is recognised by Ofqual.

This page of the NCFE website states, “As an awarding organisation, we are approved and regulated by Ofqual – England’s statutory regulator for qualifications.”

The website goes on to say, “This recognition enables us to approve colleges and training centres to deliver our qualifications, and learners can therefore choose those centres with confidence.”

This means that any qualifications you receive from NCFE are certified and recognised by Ofqual which is a trusted and reliable regulator.

However, there is an exception to this. Any unregulated qualifications, such as the Customised Qualifications that NCFE offers, are not regulated, or certified by Ofqual.

NCFE's e-Learning course on basic financial education covering topics from Banking, Securities Markets, Insurance and Pension products. The topics are further subdivided into 20 modules like Money & Transactions, Financial records and Contracts, Managing Income & Expenditure, Long Term Planning, Financial Safety Nets & Insurance, Scams & Frauds etc. The course is for 5 hours with each module of around 15-20 mins.

Diploma in Skills for Business – NCFE – Level 2

Course overview.

This qualification is ideal for learners who want to develop an understanding of the essential skills required to work successfully in a business environment and gives them an understanding of business culture and responsibilities.

FURTHER INFORMATION

This course is suitable for school leavers or other students who are progressing from a Level 1 or another Level 2 course.

You should have at least four GCSEs at grades 1-3 including English and Maths. At least a grade 3 in English and Maths are preferred.

Following successful completion of this course, you can progress to our BTEC National Foundation Diploma in English (subject also to meeting the requirements for GCSE Maths and English), another Level 3 course, a business-related apprenticeship or employment.

Assessment is by coursework assignments in a variety of formats which allow you to demonstrate practical Business skills.
