How Letterboxd works

Poster overlays

Tell us what you’ve seen

Get your Letterboxd underway by visiting our Popular section and marking a few films you’ve seen. Click the ‘eye’ on any film poster to tell us you’ve watched it (add a ‘like’ if you liked it and/or a rating). We add all watched titles to your Films tab and then we can show you reviews containing spoilers (usually hidden) and other cool stuff. If you’re Pro we compute detailed stats based on all your watched films (see below ).

Member’s films

Browse your watched films

Now that you’ve added some films, you can find them in the Films tab of your profile. As you add more content, your profile starts to reflect your taste. You can also browse the films of other members, or the community , with Hide watched films activated to find more great films to watch.

If you’ve previously saved film-related activity at IMDb or another service, we can help you import this, too.

Member’s films

Save films to watch later

One of our most-loved features, the Watchlist , lets you keep a list of films you want to see. Start in Most Anticipated and mark a few films you want to see—use the ‘clock’ on a film or review page, or open the options menu on any poster (shown opposite). If you subsequently log or mark a film as watched, we’ll move it from your Watchlist to your Films (and add it to your Diary , if you provide a date—more on that  below ).

Member’s menu

Your account, profile and settings

Click your username (at the top of each page) for shortcuts to the main sections of your account. Your Profile , Films , Diary , Watchlist and other pages are here.

You can customize your name, location, website, bio and favorite films in Settings . We use your X / Twitter avatar if you connect your account, or a Gravatar matching the email on your profile.

Note: your profile (and any other content you publish, with the exception of private lists) is visible to others, and to search engines.

Diary Entry screen

Log a film to tell us you watched it on a particular date, and to attach a review, rating and tags. We put all films you log with a date into your Diary , a great reference for when it comes time to compile your year-end list.

You can rate films without logging them too, either on a film or review page, or from the ‘more options’ menu on a poster.

Try logging a film now…

Activity stream

Following and activity

The best way to find members to follow is by reading reviews of films you like, to identify the voices and opinions you dig. Our Members page lists popular accounts.

As you follow more people, we create a personalized Activity stream full of reviews and recommendations from these members (and you’re bound to find new people to follow from the Likes included here). Use the Incoming tab to see who’s interacting with you, and upgrade to Pro to personalize the types of activity you see on each device.

List

Make and share lists

Lists are a great way to share a collection of related films, or to rank the films of your favorite genre, star, director or franchise. It’s fun to welcome suggestions for your lists from other members.

Start a list on your Lists tab, then add films on the ‘Edit’ screen (or from the ‘more options’ menu on a poster). The first time you make a list public, it’s shared with your followers.

Stats

Upgrade for stats + more!

The more films you log on Letterboxd, the more ways we have to analyze your movie-watching habits. Upgrade to a Pro or Patron account and we’ll generate all-time stats based on every film you’ve added to your profile, and annual stats for each year with at least ten films logged.

Stats include overview by week/year, highest rated decades, most watched and highest rated actors and directors, progress against milestone lists, genre, language and country breakdowns, and lots more.

Here’s what you’ll find in our main sections…

If you’re signed in, you’ll see a selection of popular films, reviews and lists from Letterboxd members. As you follow more people, we personalize this page to show what’s popular in your network.

This section shows which films our members are watching and reviewing the most. It’s also your starting point for browsing the whole database, by decade/year, genre, popularity, rating, streaming service and more.

This section shows our most popular lists, and a selection of recently added content. From here you can create a list of your own, browse more popular lists, or browse by the tags applied to each by its creator.

Here you’ll find others whose content is being enjoyed most by our community. Click through to see if you like their style, or locate your real-life Facebook friends that also use Letterboxd.

IMDb vs. Rotten Tomatoes vs. Metacritic: Which Movie Ratings Site Is Best?

5 Ways I Find New Songs on YouTube Music

How to improve your speaker audio quality (without buying new speakers), streaming device vs. smart tv apps: what's the better option.

Thanks to online ratings, it's easier than ever to know whether or not a movie is worth watching. A quick Google search brings up plenty of websites offering their opinions on the latest films.

The three most popular are IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic. But how do these sites differ, and which should you trust for information on movies? Here's everything you need to know.

IMDb 2020 Screenshot

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is a gigantic compendium of movies, TV shows, and video games. Its primary use is to find detailed information about any actor, producer, or piece of media content.

When you pull up a movie, you'll see a synopsis, trailers, photos, a cast list, trivia, and much more. What makes IMDb so useful is its cross-referencing. Upon opening the page for an actor, you'll see their best-known roles. Thus, IMDb is great for those "what else have I seen her in?" moments.

The IMDb mobile app takes this a step further. If you create an account and give ratings to movies and other media, you'll see a You may know them from field on an actor's page if you've rated something they appeared in.

With a free IMDb account, you can also create a Watchlist of movies you want to see. Along with contributing to the 10-point rating scale with other users, IMDb has many other useful features to offer if you're interested.

Pros of IMDb

Unlike the other two sites, IMDb's reviews come solely from users. It only takes a minute to sign up for IMDb and leave a review, so there's little barrier to entry.

Thus, IMDb's biggest strength is that its scores gives you a good idea of what normal consumers think of it. Professional critics have no influence on IMDb scores.

IMDb has a weighted average system to prevent users from rigging the score, but the service doesn't make it clear exactly how this works. Click the review count next to the star icon on any movie's page to see a breakdown of how people rated it.

Below the overall star average, you can see how the ratings break down by a few demographics, including age and gender.

IMDb User Rating Breakdown

Cons of IMDb

IMDb's biggest problem is that like other platforms, most people only leave reviews if they love or hate a film. Thus, this skews the scores in favor of either fanboys or haters.

People who want to boost a movie's perception will likely rate the movie a 10, while those who didn't like it will give a rating of one. This means you should read a handful of reviews to get a full picture of the movie's quality.

Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten- omatoes Homepage 2020

Rotten Tomatoes is a trusted source for movie reviews sourced from critics. Every movie uses the "Tomatometer" to score the quality of a film. If the critic liked the movie, a red tomato appears by their review. When they don't like it, you'll see a green splat instead.

As long as 60 percent or more of critics like the movie, it earns an overall Fresh score with a red tomato. If under 60 percent of critics rate the movie favorably, it earns a Rotten score with a green splat.

Meanwhile, a Certified Fresh badge appears next to titles that are of particularly high quality. They must hold at least a 75 percent favorable score after 80 reviews, including at least five from top critics.

Open any movie's page, and you'll see the overall score plus its number of reviews at the top. Click See Score Details for a deeper breakdown. The Critics Consensus , present for most movies, is a great summary of why the movie received its score.

Rotten Tomatoes also providers a user score, shown by the popcorn bucket. When at least 60 percent of users rated it 3.5 stars (out of 5) or higher, it shows a full bucket. A tipped-over bucket represents that under 60 percent of users gave it under 3.5 stars. Since you can use half-star ratings, this is close to the IMDb score.

In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes made some changes to reduce "review bombing" of movies. There's no longer a Want to See percentage, and you'll also see a check next to user reviews where the site has confirmed that the person actually bought a ticket to the movie.

At the bottom of a movie's page, you can read excerpts from the critic reviews, filter by fresh or rotten, or only show top critics. Search for your favorite actors, and you can check the scores of films they appeared in.

Pros of Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes Movie Score

Rotten Tomatoes has the advantage of sourcing its reviews from trusted critics. The Rotten Tomatoes criteria page explains that the site only takes reviews from trusted newspapers, podcasts, and websites. In theory, this means that only the opinions of the most-trusted movie critics influence the Rotten Tomatoes review.

The Top Critic designation lets you filter by the absolute best critics if you prefer. You can't get a more professional opinion than from these folks.

Overall, Rotten Tomatoes does a good job of letting you know at a glance whether or not a movie is worth your time. The easily identifiable icons, overall score, and consensus summary only take a moment to scan.

Cons of Rotten Tomatoes

The biggest issue with Rotten Tomatoes is that it breaks down complex opinions into a Yes or No score. It scores a critic who thought the movie was decent but had some flaws (say, a 59 percent rating) the same as one who thought the movie was absolute garbage (a zero percent score).

You'll notice this with the Average Rating under the score. Take Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle as an example. Of the 232 critic reviews, 177 of them are positive. This gives the movie a score of 76 percent. However, the critics rated the movie an average of 6.2/10---quite a bit under the 76 percent displayed on the page.

This doesn't mean the scores on Rotten Tomatoes are useless, of course. But it's important to remember that there's nuance in individual reviews, and the Fresh/Rotten system effectively turns every rating into a 100 or 0 score.

Metacritic Home 2020

Metacritic aggregates reviews of movies and TV shows, plus video games and music albums. It's one of the best sites for gamers , but it can give you a good idea on the quality of movies too.

The site collects reviews from many sources and aggregates them into one "metascore" from 0 to 100. It displays a color and one-line indication of quality based on the overall score, with the following used for movies, TV, and albums:

  • 81-100: Universal Acclaim (Green)
  • 61-80: Generally Favorable Reviews (Green)
  • 40-60: Mixed or Average Reviews (Yellow)
  • 20-39: Generally Unfavorable Reviews (Red)
  • 0-19: Overwhelming Dislike (Red)

Unlike Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic uses a weighted average system. Nobody knows the exact details, but the service assigns more importance to some sources than others. Like the other two sites, Metacritic also includes a separate user score, which does not influence the critic score.

The Pros of Metacritic

Metacritic avoids the Rotten Tomatoes problem of scoring every review as simply "good" or "bad." A review of 50 percent gets mixed in with the rest to create the metascore. Thus, the score you see on Metacritic is closer to the average review, as opposed to the percentage of critics who simply liked the movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Additionally, among these three sites, Metacritic is the only one to feature full user reviews right next to critic reviews. This makes it easy to compare what the general public thinks compared to the professionals.

The Cons of Metacritic

While it's easy to translate a score from a five-star or 10-point scale, Metacritic's way of translating letter grade is questionable. We can see how this works on the About Metascores page :

Metacritic Letter Scores 2020

While scoring an A as 100 percent makes sense, note the scores for B- and F , for instance. A 67 percent score for a B- seems a bit harsh. In most schools, a score of 67 percent is closer to an F than it is a B- .

And scoring an F as 0 percent seems unfair. Something like 20 percent for an F might be more appropriate. Because every site has different scales for scoring (some might not even use pluses and minuses), this could skew a reviewer's original meaning.

Also, unlike Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic seems to have few public standards. There's no detailed information on where it sources it critics from. Thus, the score potentially doesn't have as much weight behind it as Rotten Tomatoes does.

What Is the Best Movie Rating Website?

So we've now taken a look at IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic, and listed their major pros and cons. As you might have guessed, there's no one website that's best for everything.

However, we can recommend each of these sites for different reasons:

  • IMDb is great for seeing what general audiences think of a movie. If you don't care what the critics say and want to see what people like yourself thought of a film, then you should use IMDb. Just be aware that fans often skew the vote with 10-star ratings, which may inflate scores somewhat.
  • Rotten Tomatoes offers the best overall picture of whether a movie is worth seeing at a glance. If you only trust the opinions of top critics and just want to know if a movie is at least decent, you should use Rotten Tomatoes. While the Fresh/Rotten binary can oversimplify the often complex opinions of critics, it should still help you weed out lousy films.
  • Metacritic offers the most balanced aggregate score. If you don't mind which critics' opinions go into the final score and prefer seeing a general average, then you should use Metacritic. Its standards are mostly unknown, but Metacritic makes it easy to compare professional and user reviews side-by-side.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with checking all three of these sites every time you're thinking of seeing a movie. Over time, you should figure out which site's tastes most match yours; then you'll know which is best for you personally.

Personal Taste Still Matters Most

Remember that movie scores aren't everything. All three of these sites don't, for instance, paint an accurate picture of movies that are so bad they're good. Because those movies are objectively terrible, they carry low scores even though they have ironic value.

Plus, it's impossible to sum up complex opinions from dozens of people into a single number. And no matter what the critics or general public think, your preferences might be totally different anyway. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a movie that most people find stupid. So while these sites are helpful, don't take them too seriously.

Filmmaking Lifestyle

Best Sites For Rating Movies: 6 Top Movie Review Websites

movie review sites

Our society has grown to worship movies. This can be seen in the sheer number of movies made each year, some good and some bad. Because there are so many to choose from, finding a good one can be a challenge.

Movies now make up a huge part of the entertainment industry. But with so many choices comes the problem of finding the best ones to watch.

It would take hours upon hours to watch every movie made in a year, and even then you’d likely miss some great ones. So how can we solve this problem?

The answer reviews. Reviews allow us to get an idea of whether or not others liked the movie before we decide if it’s worth watching ourselves.

BEST SITES FOR RATING MOVIES

What are movie review sites.

Movie review sites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and Letterboxd are great places to find out what a movie is all about.

They can also be useful for finding out if your favorite actor has been in other movies you may have missed.

Movie review websites are one of the best ways to learn what critics think of a movie and how they feel about it.

The more information you can gather on a film, the better informed you’ll be when you decide whether to watch it or not.

Movie review sites don’t really have any effect on box office sales, but they can make a huge difference in determining what kind of an impact a movie will have on consumers.

A review helps us determine if others were entertained by a movie before we spend our time and money on it.

Picking a movie to watch can be hard. You have your mood to consider, the weather, and the amount of time you have available.

And who to see it with? But even after all that, one question remains — is it any good?

movie review sites

With sites like Letterboxd, the answer is now as easy as logging into your social media account.

The internet can be an overwhelming place when trying to find a good, reliable movie review site.

With so many sites out there, it’s hard to know which ones are actually worth your time.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of the best movie review sites out there. Not everyone will be for everyone, but each reviewer has something unique to offer that makes it worth checking out.

Best Sites For Rating Movies

If you love the cinema, and you’re constantly looking for the best ways to keep up to date with what’s new and what’s upcoming, then one of these sites is going to be perfect for you.

Below, we’ve gone through some of the most popular movie websites on the internet today and reviewed them, so that you can find out which site is best for your film needs.

Let’s start off with my personal favorite!

Letterboxd is a social network for sharing your taste in film. Keep a watchlist of films you’d like to see, and create lists/collections on any topic. Rate, review, and tag films as you add them. Find and follow friends to see what they’re enjoying.

Keep a diary of your film viewing, check in to films at theaters, and share your thoughts with the world. Search a database of over 2 million films, with filters that can refine your results by anything from decade and genre to personal ratings and reviews.

From Letterboxd themselves: “We’re proud of our place in a burgeoning ecosystem of film-related apps and websites that complement Letterboxd’s focus on social sharing, curation, and discovery.

In that spirit, we offer a range of developer tools to help integrate Letterboxd data into other applications and websites — you can explore these on our developer site.”

My Letterboxd profile can be found here, btw: FilmLifestyle’s Letterboxd profile . Give me a follow!

Letterboxd

Originally a fan-operated website, the database is owned and operated by IMDb.com, Inc., a subsidiary of Amazon.

IMDb has approximately 4.7 million titles (including episodes) and 8.3 million personalities in its database,  as well as 83 million registered users.

IMDb stands out for its vast collection of film and television information. It’s not just a place for ratings; it’s a comprehensive resource for release dates, cast and crew details, trivia, and forums for discussion.

With user-contributed content and professional critic reviews, IMDb offers a balanced view of a film’s reception. Its integration with Amazon also allows for easy viewing options.

IMDb

Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes is a great site to find out what the overall critical opinion is about a movie.

It uses a unique ‘tomato meter’ to rate movies. A green tomato means fresh while red means rotten. You can also view the individual ratings given by critics.

Rotten Tomatoes is unique for its dual scoring system. The “Tomatometer” reflects the critical consensus, while the audience score gives a sense of general viewer reception.

This site is particularly useful for contrasting professional critique with popular opinion, offering a rounded view of a film’s reception. The “Certified Fresh” status is a coveted indicator of high-quality films.

Best Sites For Rating Movies – Why Use Movie Review Sites?

Movie Review sites like IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes , and Metacritic are helpful for many reasons.

First, they’re an excellent source for learning about the best films.

Second, it’s another great way to find out about movies that are just being released or will be released in the future.

And third, movie review sites have other useful information like trailers, showtimes and tickets, DVD release dates, and more.

There are a lot of fans who love talking about movies, and these movie review sites offer them a great place to do just that. You can find out what other people think of the movie you’re watching.

Here are the top 5 reasons to use movie review sites:

1. You want to discover new films, new genres, or new directors to check out.

2. You’re not sure exactly what you want to see, and you’re looking for movie recommendations.

3. You’re looking for a good way to kill time when you’re stuck in a waiting room.

4. You wonder why that movie was such a big deal when it came out.

5. You want to find out how the latest movies compare to the classics.

User Experience and Interface

The user experience and interface of a movie rating site can significantly impact its usability.

IMDb offers a user-friendly interface with easy navigation to different sections. Its search functionality is robust, allowing users to find detailed information swiftly.

Rotten Tomatoes’ interface is clean and intuitive, with scores prominently displayed and easy access to both critic and audience reviews.

Metacritic’s layout is straightforward, focusing on presenting scores and reviews in an accessible format. Each site’s design enhances the process of discovering and evaluating movies.

Mobile Accessibility of Movie Rating Sites

The accessibility of movie rating sites on mobile devices is a crucial aspect for users who rely on smartphones and tablets.

IMDb provides a comprehensive mobile app, allowing users to access its extensive database on the go.

Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic also offer mobile-friendly websites and apps, ensuring that users can check movie ratings, read reviews, and find film recommendations easily, no matter where they are.

These apps maintain the functionality of their desktop counterparts, offering a seamless mobile experience.

Community Features of Movie Rating Sites

Community features play a significant role in movie rating sites. IMDb’s forums provide a space for in-depth discussions and debates among movie enthusiasts.

Rotten Tomatoes allows users to leave their own reviews and ratings, fostering a community of shared opinions.

Metacritic’s user reviews complement professional critiques, offering diverse perspectives.

These community elements enhance the overall experience by enabling engagement and interaction among users.

Streaming Service Ratings vs. Dedicated Movie Rating Sites

Comparing movie ratings on dedicated sites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic with those on streaming platforms like Netflix reveals differences in approach.

Streaming services often use personalized algorithms to suggest films, focusing on individual viewing habits.

In contrast, dedicated movie rating sites provide broader insights with aggregated critic and user ratings, offering a more holistic view of a film’s reception.

This comparison helps users understand the value of different rating sources in selecting movies.

Movie Rating Sites – Wrap Up

Wrapping up, movie rating sites play an indispensable role in guiding viewers through the vast landscape of cinema.

Whether you are looking for critically acclaimed art-house films or mainstream blockbusters, these sites offer valuable insights and detailed information to inform your choice.

By leveraging the unique features and community aspects of each platform, movie enthusiasts can enhance their viewing experience, making informed decisions about what to watch next.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our complete guide to the best sites for rating movies. What’s your favorite movie review site? Let us know in the comments below!

There are many websites that offer movie reviews and ratings, but here are six of the top sites:

Rotten Tomatoes: Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most popular movie review websites. It aggregates reviews from both professional critics and regular movie-goers to provide an overall score for each film.

IMDb: IMDb is a comprehensive database of movies information that also includes user reviews and ratings. Its Top Rated Movies list is based on user ratings, and it’s a great place to find information about upcoming movies.

Metacritic: Like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic aggregates reviews from critics, but it also assigns a weighted score to each review based on the critic’s track record. The site’s Metascore is often used as a shorthand for a movie’s critical reception.

Letterboxd: Letterboxd is a social media platform for movie lovers that allows users to rate and review films, create watchlists, and follow other users with similar tastes. Its recommendation algorithm is known for being particularly effective.

RogerEbert.com: Roger Ebert was one of the most respected film critics of his time, and his website continues to offer thoughtful and insightful reviews from a team of writers. The site also includes essays, interviews, and other film-related content.

Empire: Empire is a UK-based magazine that covers movies, TV shows, and video games. Its website includes reviews, news, and features, and its annual Empire Awards are highly respected within the industry.

Thanks for the contribution, Rizwan.

Longlegs Review: Unnerving Nicolas Cage Horror Movie Isn't What You Think It Is (& That's A Good Thing)

Longlegs is unnerving, atmospheric, and ultimately, surprisingly sorrowful as an examination of the hellish rot at the center of the nuclear family.

Fly Me To The Moon Review: I Want More Movies Like This, Hollywood

Kill review: india's intense, ultra-violent actioner offers must-see deaths by fire extinguisher, aliens expanded: cameron's iconic sci-fi gets a near-5-hour love letter that is essential viewing for all fans, beverly hills cop: axel f review - eddie murphy & nostalgia do all the heavy lifting in netflix sequel.

Beverly Hills Cops: Axel F is a good time, not a slam dunk good time, but entertaining enough to satisfy the need for Eddie Murphy.

Space Cadet Review: Emma Roberts Gives Her All In Painfully Unfunny Comedy Better Suited For Disney Channel

Space Cadet feels like a Disney Channel movie released 20 years too late with its unfunny writing and story, despite a game Emma Roberts performance.

The Vourdalak Review: This French Feature Debut Bites Back At The Mundanity Of Modern Vampire Movies

In The Vourdalak, vampire legends of old are brought back to life in a visually stunning & emotionally devastating take on a classic scary story.

The Devil's Bath Review: Shudder's Latest Horror Is A Diabolical Dismantling Of A Woman's Spirit

The Devil's Bath is bleak but well worth the watch, especially if you like being guided down Franz and Fiala's dark, twisted rabbit hole.

A Sacrifice Review: Eric Bana & Sadie Sink Star In An Overstuffed & Confusing Psychological Thriller

A Sacrifice, a cult thriller from director Jordan Scott, can't decide which story it wants to tell and each plot ends up suffering in this 2024 drama.

Despicable Me 4 Review: I Can't Shake The Feeling That Something's Missing From Gru's Latest Adventure

Despicable Me 4 features way more of some of the animated franchise's hallmarks - over-the-top villains, Minions - while losing track of others.

Family Portrait Review: The Dysfunctional Family Genre Gets A Lynchian Twist In Surreal Feature

Lucy Kerr's directorial debut Family Portrait offers a uniquely bizarre and tense take on family gatherings, even if it meanders a bit too much.

A Family Affair Review: Fun, Flawed Entertainment Captures What It Means To Be A Netflix Movie

Despite flaws, A Family Affair holds together on the strength of its comedy, even if it suffers a bit from targeting a passive streaming audience.

A Quiet Place: Day One Review - John Krasinski's Horror Franchise Has Officially Overstayed Its Welcome

Lupita Nyong'o is great, but A Quiet Place: Day One has the depth of paper and less effective scares and tension than either of the first two movies.

I Am: Celine Dion - Prime Video's Thoughtful, Visceral Documentary Gives Celine Dion Her Voice Back

While it could’ve easily been indulgent, I Am keeps things grounded, never losing sight of Dion's SPS and the powerful instrument that is her voice.

MaXXXine Review: Mia Goth Cements Her Stardom In Nearly Perfect Conclusion To A24's Slasher Trilogy

There are complicated layers that Goth needs to bring to the surface, and she delivers a layered character who is equal parts victim and survivor.

Daddio Review: Sean Penn & Dakota Johnson Get Surprisingly Intimate In The Longest Taxi Ride Ever

The sparse set-up of Daddio, involving only two actors in one location, might put off some, but as a character study, it hits the right beats.

Trigger Warning Review: I Wanted More From Netflix's Weak Jessica Alba Actioner Beyond Stereotypes

Corruption is the core of this story, yet there is not much done with it beyond saying these people are immoral, and Alba's Parker will mess them up.

Blackwater Lane Review: Minka Kelly Isn't The Only One Losing It After Lazy, Repetitive Thriller

Blackwater Lane delivers very few thrills, instead forcing audiences to watch repetitive scenes, a dreadful lead performance & listen to bad dialogue.

Beacon Review: I Think I've Seen This Tensionless Psychological Thriller Before

Beacon saps any tension from its plot with plodding pacing & horror elements that feel shoehorned in rather than an organic part of the film's story.

The Exorcism Review: Russell Crowe Is Too Good For This Misguided Horror Story That Falls Apart

Had the film remained an engaging character exploration, it might have been worth recommending, but it undermines itself in the last third.

The Wasp Review: This Dark, Jaw-Dropping Psychological Thriller Is The Wildest Film I've Seen All Year

The filmmakers have a sharp movie, with its galvanizing story examining the differences & history between two people & the effect of childhood trauma.

Janet Planet Review: Tranquil Drama Contemplates The Idea That We'll Never Fully Know Ourselves

Janet Planet is a contemplative film, a tranquil drama about the relationship between a dysfunctional mother and daughter who learn from each other.

The Shallow Tale Of A Writer Who Decided To Write About A Serial Killer Review: Dark Comedy Hits The Wrong Target

At times darkly humorous, at others deadly serious, The Shallow Tale never hits its stride despite standout performances from Lower and Buscemi.

Rent Free Review: Caustic Comedy About Couch-Surfing Friends Is A Perfect Portrait Of The Times

At once cooly detached & surprisingly sentimental, Rent Free is a bitterly hilarious film and a startling portrait of young adulthood in 2024.

Which season of Lost is the best?

It's almost hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since the first episode of Lost premiered in September 2004, and yet the series continues to be held up as a defining moment — not only in television, but pop culture at large. Over the course of the story, the characters on the doomed Oceanic Flight 815 flash back, forward, and sometimes sideways — but it can often be difficult to think of Lost in terms of seasons when there are so many great moments across all six. That said: if you had to pick an all-time favorite season of Lost, whether because of the number of standout episodes or the story that develops, which would it be? (I'm presently torn between Seasons 1 and 3, myself, but I'd be curious to see if that changes on a rewatch.)

Who's Your Favorite TV or Movie Detective?

With The Thursday Murder Club now filming, we're soon going to get yet another set of amateur detectives on our screens. Of course, there's been plenty of those on film in the past, both real and amateur, so who's your favorite? Columbo? Poirot? Miss Marple? Let us know!

When's the last time you laughed really hard in the theater?

Hands down the hardest I've laughed in the movie theater in a long time was Emma Seligman's 'Bottoms.' Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri absolutely crushed it as two awkward and determined high school besties looking to get with cheerleaders, and Nicholas Galitzine's Jeff put such an absurd spin on the "dumb jock" archetype. Witty jokes are crammed into every line of this movie, and the self-awareness that is on full display just heightens the chaos. You'll never see a high school movie like this one.

‘MaXXXine’ Review: Fame Monster

Mia Goth returns to Ti West’s horrorverse as an actress fleeing a mysterious stalker and a traumatic past.

  • Share full article

A blond woman in a blue denim top and jeans walks in a parking lot away from a casting call sign.

By Jeannette Catsoulis

A psychosexual thriller imagined in blood red and cocaine white, “MaXXXine,” the third installment in Ti West’s nostalgia-soaked slasher saga, is part grungy homage to 1980s Hollywood and part sleazy feminist manifesto. Darker, moodier and altogether nastier than its predecessors — “X” (2022) and, later that same year, “Pearl” — this hyperconfident feature is also funny, occasionally wistful and deeply empathetic toward its damaged, driven heroine.

That would be Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), the sole survivor of the dirty-movie cast massacred in “X.” Now a successful porn star, Maxine, eager to break into mainstream movies, has relocated to a Hollywood of spectacular seediness. It is 1985 and, as in real life, a killer known as the Night Stalker is terrorizing the city, the so-called Moral Majority is hyperventilating on the sidelines and rock musicians are fighting accusations of satanic intent. In one pungent shot of Maxine’s boot grinding her cigarette stub into the silent film sex symbol Theda Bara’s star on the Walk of Fame, West underscores the transience of the celebrity status that Maxine so desperately seeks.

“I will not accept a life I do not deserve,” she declares, repeating the mantra taught by her father, a preacher seen in speckled, black-and-white flashback. Securing a role on a low-grade horror sequel brings her under the wing of its industry-toughened director (a perfect Elizabeth Debicki). Yet Maxine is constantly distracted: Her friends are dying, and two homicide detectives (Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan) want to question her; a Louisiana gumshoe (Kevin Bacon, a skeevy vision in crumpled suits and gold-capped incisors) keeps randomly accosting her; and a mysterious, black-gloved stalker haunts the film’s shadows. No wonder Maxine is plagued by panicked recollections of her traumatic past.

The best horror movie of 2024 arrives with a perfect 100% critic score.

Every year there are a few buzzed-about horror movies released, but I haven’t seen this much hype for one in a good long while. The movie is Longlegs, hitting theaters this upcoming weekend, and it’s a strange name for what appears to be an incredibly terrifying, incredibly good film.

As it stands, with 25 reviews in, Longlegs has a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes , not a very common achievement for a mainstream horror film. Here’s a synopsis of the movie:

“In the 1990s, new FBI agent Lee Harker was assigned to an unsolved case involving the Satanic serial killer known as Longlegs. As the investigation becomes more complicated with occult evidence uncovered, Harker realizes a personal link to the killer and must act quickly to prevent another family murder.”

The cast is pretty great too. It stars Maika Monroe (It Follows), Alicia Witt (OG Dune), Blair Underwood (Rules of Engagement), Kiernan Shipka (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Nicholas Cage (everything). Monroe in particular is cementing her status as a true icon of horror after starring in both this as It Follows, which I’d consider to be an all-time great horror film, and one of my favorites. Cage as the killer (this is not a secret) is being praised as unsettling well beyond what we thought may have been possible from him.

Best Nintendo Switch Games: It’s Mario’s World, We’re Just Visiting

What’s so good about it? I was impressed with this high praise from Cinematic Reel’s David Gonzalez:

“Not since the likes of Zodiac and The Silence of the Lambs has a serial killer entry disturbed me the way Oz Perkins’ Longlegs did. It’s a psychologically relentless descent into the macabre that’s sure to crawl its way under your skin and never leave.”

I think my favorite piece of trivia about director Oz Perkins is that he played a character named “Dorky David” in Legally Blonde in 2001. But since then he’s directed a couple horror movies, but none that blew up the way we’re seeing here.

There were some early reactions to the movie in surprise screenings, and this one’s probably my favorite:

"No lie. Longlegs was so insane that a woman behind us started crying halfway thru lmao 10/10 movie."

For reference, here are some of the highest rated horror movies of last year, 2023, where none hit a full 100%:

  • When Evil Lurks – 97%
  • Huesera: The Bone Woman – 97%
  • Attachment – 95%
  • Talk to Me – 95%
  • M3GAN – 93%
  • Influencer – 92%

So, if you liked any of those, and this is scoring better, well, get ready. And these comparisons to Blair Witch, Silence of the Lambs and Zodiac are something else, as it’s not just a few people saying that, but many. I cannot wait. The movie is out July 12 in select theaters.

The incoherent drama Browse tries to look like a suspenseful horror movie, but there's nothing scary or thrilling about this rambling dud of a film.

A great deal of the movie consists of unfinished ideas, plot points, story threads, and character arcs.

It's a thoughtful, curious piece of work which may not quite be successful in finding its destination but which manages to intrigue along the way.

Skip the film if you need an ending that answers the questions raised throughout. But check it out if you enjoy seeing a psychological thriller that makes you come to your own conclusions.

With such a tangled mess of a film it is hard to put your finger on what went wrong in the bringing it to the screen.

In a perfect world, this thriller, with its onslaught of stomach-churning "oh no!" moments, would've had a point, something that connected it all together (or at least a conclusion), but it doesn't.

An identity theft "nightmare" that fails every attempted thrill and chill. Quite possibly one of the most unimaginative and unmemorable films I've ever seen.

‘sausage party: foodtopia’ review: amazon series spreads original film’s fornicating food formula even thinner.

Sausage Party Foodtopia

Say what you will about Sausage Party , but if you’ve ever wanted to watch a piece of anthropomorphic food call another piece of anthropomorphic food the c-word, or see the denizens of a supermarket aisle engaged in a protracted, graphic orgy, the animated hit is an irreplaceable part of the cinematic canon, putting the “whore” in “hors d’oeuvres,” as it were.

'palm royale,' starring kristen wiig, renewed for second season at apple tv+, why tcm fans are glitching about david zaslav, sausage party: foodtopia.

With similar trepidation, I’m prepared to say that there are between 5 and 10 good and clever minutes in Amazon’s new Sausage Party: Foodtopia as well, but it’s much harder to find redemptive value in 5 or 10 good and clever minutes stretched over eight half-hour episodes. In making the lurch to television, the Sausage Party: Foodtopia creative team has failed to find any real narrative or character-based explanation for what feels like a plate of reheated leftovers rather than a carefully devised gastronomic experience. I’d say it’s like haggis — a limited quantity of organ meats stretched out with grain-y filler and crammed into an ill-fitting casing — but I really like haggis.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia picks up in the general aftermath of the Shopwell’s orgy and massacre that completed the film, as various foodstuffs led an uprising to conquer the human overlords who once ate them. Or something like that. The actual specifics are completely irrelevant. All you need to know is that food is alive and sentient and humans are, for the most part, much less alive. And if you don’t get that, it’s helpfully summarized by Gum (Scott Diggs Underwood), one of the breakout characters/exposition devices from the film.

Very quickly, though, the foodstuffs realize that they’re not as prepared for the outside world as they hoped. Growing up in the shelter of the grocery store, they’ve imagined a utopia, but instead they face incomprehensible carnage from the sky in the form of rain and crows. While Barry (Michael Cera), a deformed hot dog, seeks brutal vengeance on the few remaining humans, Frank and Brenda see value in getting answers from those survivors, including Jack (Will Forte).

At the same time, the foods struggle to build a functioning society, in part because a scheming orange, Julius ( Sam Richardson ), has built up an economic system driven by human teeth — something about repurposing the tools of oppression — that thrives on growing inequality between the haves and have-nots.

With a satire of this sort, you need aspiration to be good, but the truth is that you need aspiration to be bad as well. Somehow, Sausage Party: Foodtopia actually has less aspiration than its source material. It isn’t just the central metaphor that’s thin. It’s the lack of desire to be even limitedly provocative in fleshing out the premise. The relationship between Sammy and Kareem from the movie? I didn’t buy it for a second and I don’t think it ultimately made a provocative point about Israeli-Palestinian relations, but using the sexual relationship between a lavash and a bagel for commentary on the Middle East is, if nothing else, an attempt at something . Trying to challenge, or tweak, stereotypes by having Salma Hayek voicing a taco paid no real dividends in the movie, but at least it’s presumptively edgy.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia can’t muster — or “mustard” — “presumptive edginess.”

The most “shocking” scene in the series, a scene so shocking — it’s not — that the episode is preceded by a warning, is just a minor escalation of the most shocking scene from the movie. The warning also serves to fully telegraph the alleged shock.

Across a movie and an eight-episode television series, the Sausage Party brand has failed to produce even a single likable or interesting character. The humor never goes deeper than one of those retro social media prompts like #MakeASingerFood, where tweeting “Pita Ora” would get you the brief dopamine rush of a half-dozen shares, without the responsibility of having to build a story around it. As for “story,” Sausage Party: Foodtopia begins and ends with disconnected references, as if there’s a meaningful purpose in an homage to Apocalypse Now or Call Me By Your Name with no cohesive voice to justify the nods. It’s eight episodes of barely solvent puns, which hurts because anybody who has ever read me knows that I am predisposed to love puns.

Credit where it’s due: Sausage Party was such a cheap-looking movie that the passage of eight years of evolution in the computer-animated space guarantees that Sausage Party: Foodtopia is marginally better-looking, albeit to no particular end. With the exception of one oddly poignant sequence at the top of the fifth episode, none of the animation has any impact at all, be it for thrills or humor or titillation or body/food horror.

Maybe it will ultimately play well with the handful of viewers who felt that the potential of the movie had gone only partially fulfilled. But the series works best as an elaborate prank to make critics look silly for complaining about the lack of nuance in a cartoon about fornicating food.
