I understand your skepticism regarding the significance of these problems, given the widespread acclaim the Kindle Paperwhite has received for revolutionizing the realm of digital reading.

However, it is important to acknowledge and confront the underlying concerns associated with this device.

6 Common Kindle Paperwhite Problems & Solutions!

kindle paperwhite problem solving

Kindle Paperwhite is a popular e-reader device, but users may encounter several common problems while using it.

We will address six common issues faced by Kindle Paperwhite users and provide step-by-step solutions to fix them. Additionally, we will offer some expert tips along the way. Let’s dive in:

Problem 1: Ghost Image On The Screen

Sometimes, a ghost image of a previous page may remain on the Kindle Paperwhite screen even after forwarding the page. To fix this issue, follow these steps:

1. While reading a book, tap around the top of the screen. This will display the toolbar.

2. Tap anywhere on the screen.

3. The screen will turn black momentarily as it refreshes, and the toolbar will disappear.

4. The ghost image problem should now be resolved.

Problem 2: Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues

If your Kindle Paperwhite is not automatically connecting to Wi-Fi networks, you may need to connect manually. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Tap the “Menu” button on your Kindle Paperwhite.

2. Select “Settings” from the menu.

3. A list of available networks will appear. If your desired network is listed, simply tap on it to connect.

4. If your network is not listed, tap on “Other.”

5. In the “Enter Wi-Fi Network” dialog box, enter the name of the network and the password.

6. Tap on “Advanced” and provide any additional information requested, such as the IP address, security type, and connection type.

7. Use the up or down arrow to navigate through the screens.

8. Once all the required information is filled in, tap “Connect” to join the network.

💡 Bonus Tip: If you can connect to your home Wi-Fi but can’t connect to Amazon, you may need to re-establish the connection.

The steps are as follows:

  • Tap “Menu” and then select “Settings.”
  • Go to “Wi-Fi Networks” and choose the network with a tick mark next to it.
  • Tap “Forget Network” in the dialog box that appears.
  • Now, reselect your desired network and enter the password.
  • You should now be able to connect to Amazon.

Problem 3: Battery Drains Quickly

The battery on your Kindle Paperwhite may be draining rapidly due to unindexed content. You can resolve the issue by following these steps:

1. Tap the search icon on the home screen.

2. Ensure that all text is displayed on the right side of the search box.

3. Type something unusual or uncommon in the search box (even random letters will suffice).

4. Tap the arrow next to it to initiate the search.

5. Scroll to the very bottom of the search results screen.

6. After the search results are displayed, press and hold any unindexed items.

7. Select “Delete” from the menu that appears to remove the unindexed item.

8. If the content was acquired from Amazon, you can download it again from the cloud. For content acquired from other sources, ensure you have a backup.

9. Monitor the battery drain for a few days to see if the issue is resolved.

10. The unindexed item can be re-downloaded from the cloud, sideloaded from a computer, or resampled from Amazon if the problem persists.

👨‍💻 Expert Tip: When adding multiple unindexed items back to your Kindle, add them one by one. Allow the first item to finish indexing before adding the next one. By doing this, you can identify the particular book causing the indexing problem.

Problem 4: Lack of Sync between Devices

You can troubleshoot your Kindle Paperwhite’s inability to sync with other devices by completing these steps:

1. Ensure both devices have a stable 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

2. Check the Amazon server connection. Whispersync only works if your device is connected to the Amazon servers.

3. Check the synchronization settings:

  • Log into your Amazon account.
  • Go to the “Manage Your Kindle” page.
  • Click on “Manage Your Devices.”
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and check if the synchronization option is turned on. If not, enable it.

Problem 5: Incorrect Order of Items on the Home Screen

If the items on your Kindle Paperwhite’s home screen are not displayed in the correct order, solve the issue by taking mentioned below points:

1. Tap the “Menu” button on your home screen.

2. Select “Sync and Check for Items.” This option is usually number 5 on the drop-down list or the fourth option on the second-generation Paperwhite.

3. After performing this step, the home screen should display all items in the correct order.

👨‍💻 Expert Tip: To avoid small problems, ensure that your Kindle’s clock shows the correct time. You can choose the option to update your clock automatically.

Problem 6: Password Recognition Failure

If your Kindle Paperwhite fails to recognize your password, follow these initial steps:

1. Double-check that you have entered the correct password. Try entering variations of your password in case of a typographical error during the initial setup.

2. If you own multiple Kindle devices, ensure that you are entering the password on the correct device.

3. If the basic steps do not unlock your device, you may need to reset your password. Resetting your password will remove all content from your device and unregister it from Amazon.

Proceed with caution and follow these steps:

  • Enter the following sequence as your password: 111222777 (press 1 three times, press 2 three times, and press 7 three times).
  • Tap “OK.”
  • This action will wipe your Kindle clean.

Pocket-lint

10 kindle paperwhite tips and tricks to help you master your e-reader.

Kindles are easy to use, but there are plenty of not-so-obvious features worth getting the hang of. Here are our favorite Paperwhite tips and tricks.

Key Takeaways

  • Schedule warm light: Customize when the warm light feature turns on and off, great for reading before bed.
  • Use book cover as lock screen: Display the cover of the book you're reading as your lock screen graphic.
  • Adjust font size and style: Easily change the font style, size, and layout to improve readability.

As e-readers go, it's not at all controversial to suggest that the Kindle Paperwhite is the best there is. It combines a great reading experience with long battery life, water resistance, a USB-C port, and easy access to Amazon's massive library of content.

It's easy to use and great for sitting with and getting lost in your favorite fiction, but there is more to it than that. If you're prepared to do a little digging into menus and options, there's plenty more to discover than just your next favorite novel.

Best Kindle: Which model of Amazon's eReader is right for you?

In the video at the top of this page - and the written tips below - we'll show you a few of our favorite Kindle Paperwhite 11th Generation tips and tricks. It's not limited to just the Paperwhite either, try some of these on the Kindle Oasis or the basic Kindle model too, because the software is largely the same (although some features only exist on the Paperwhite).

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2021)

Kindle Paperwhite offers a big display, illumination, waterproofing and colour temperature controls - but there are no buttons for page turns.

1 Schedule warm light

And customize how warm you want.

Kindle Paperwhite 2021 review photo 18

We had to start with this one, purely because it was the big new feature on the latest Kindle Paperwhite when it launched. The warm adjustment is great, but for many, it's likely a feature you'd rather come on just in the evening when you're reading before bed. And there are two ways to schedule it to come on.

You can either drop the settings shade down by tapping or swiping down near the top of the page, then tapping the down arrow and then selecting 'Schedule' above the Warmth slider. Or you can tap the 'All Settings' cog, then select 'Device Options' and then 'Warmth Schedule'.

To enable the feature, toggle the switch on and either choose 'automatic' for it to switch on and off with the sunset. Or choose a manual time for it to be activated. Now adjust the Warmth grade at the bottom of the page to customize how warm you want it to be.

If you need further assistance, we have a step-by-step guide to scheduling warm light .

2 Use your book cover as a lock screen

Display cover feature.

Kindle Display Cover

One feature added to most Kindles' software is the ability to use the cover art of the book you're reading as the lock screen graphic. No more random artwork. It is one of the easiest and best Kindle Paperwhite features. Simply go to 'All Settings' then 'Device Options' and now toggle on the switch at the top next to 'Display Cover'.

3 Page turning animations

A transition between pages.

Kindle Paperwhite Page Turn Animation

By default, when you're reading, when you tap or swipe to go to the next page, it simply switches quickly without any sort of animation. However, you can enable one if you want to. Open the book you're reading and then tap near the top to bring up the toolbar. Tap the 'Aa' icon, and select 'more' in the popup window that appears.

If you scroll down this list by swiping, you'll see an option that says 'Page Turn Animation'. Toggle this on and now every time you turn a page, you'll see more of a transition between pages.

4 Show a clock while reading

Don't stay up too late reading.

Kindle paperwhite Clock

Another Kindle Paperwhite hidden feature that isn't on by default is having the clock constantly on display at the top of the page. If you're often one to get lost in your book and lose all track of time, you might find it useful to switch it on. We find it most useful for ensuring we don't stay up too late reading. Open the popup menu again by tapping that 'Aa' icon in the toolbar and select 'More'. Now toggle on the option near the top that says 'show clock while reading'.

5 Change your font size and style

For when you're struggling to read.

Kindle Paperwhite Font

Arguably, one of the most important things to get to grips with on the Kindle is adjusting the font style, size and layout, to make it as easy as possible for you to read. Open up the same toolbar as the previous two tips and tap 'Font'.

The Font Family option at the top lets you choose the font style, with 9 to choose from, including popular fonts like Helvetica, Futura, and Bookerly. Once you've selected the one you want, you can adjust the weight by tapping plus next to the bold slider, and underneath that you can adjust the size.

If you're struggling to read because the lines are too close together, you can change the spacing by tapping 'Layout' and now choose one of the spacing options with bigger gaps between the lines. You can also change the size of the margins if you don't want text spreading widely across the page.

6 Read in landscape

Change orientation.

Kindle Paperwhite Orientation

One interesting option you might find useful is reading in landscape mode. In the same Layout menu as the previous tip, tap the wider option under 'Orientation' and now the text will rotate 90 degrees, and you'll be able to read horizontally, in landscape.

7 Show word meanings above words

For long or difficult words.

Kindle Paperwhite Word Wise

Kindle has a feature called Word Wise, which automatically shows the meanings of words above any that may be difficult or long. To enable it, access that familiar toolbar at the top, tap 'Aa' and then 'More' in the popup window. Scroll until you see 'Word Wise' and select it. Toggle it on and wait for the data to download, and you'll now see descriptions appear above long words.

You'll now also see 'Word Wise' in the bottom corner. Tap it, and you'll see a slider that lets you adjust the number of descriptions you see. There's also an option that lets you 'hide' them all whenever you like.

8 Build your vocabulary

Vocabulary builder feature.

Vocabulary Builder Turn Off-1

When you're reading any book you can long press on a word that you don't know and a dictionary definition appears in a window above it. Now, whenever you do this, it adds this word to something Kindle calls 'Vocabulary Builder'.

To find this list when you're reading, just tap near the top of the page, then tap the three dots in the corner and select 'Vocabulary Builder' and you'll see all the words you've learned or are learning.

Tap on any word to see a dictionary definition. Tap 'usage' to see where that word appeared, and in which book. If you want to you can easily delete the word from the list, or when you're comfortable you're familiar with a word, tap 'mastered' and the word is moved to a 'mastered' list.

We have a step-by-step guide for the Vocabulary Builder as well if you want to learn more.

9 Quick Archive

Storage management.

Kindle Paperwhite Quick Archive

If you're finding that your Kindle's storage is getting close to full, there's a quick archive feature that lets you swiftly remove any books or content you've not read recently. Go to 'All Settings', then 'Device Options' and 'Advanced Options'.

Now choose 'Storage management' and select 'Quick Archive'. Here you'll find four options, with the ability to remove anything you haven't opened in 1, 3 or 6 months, as well as anything that's been unread for more than a year.

10 Browse the web

Experimental web browser feature.

Kindle Paperwhite web browser

Funnily enough, there's an experimental web browser built into the Kindle software. On your home screen, tap the three dots in the corner, and now select 'Web Browser'. It'll load - unsurprisingly - a browser, and you can browse your favorite site. Understandably, images are a bit rough, but for text-heavy pages it's fine.

Power Button not Powering Device

Battery not fully charged, faulty charging unit, faulty battery, faulty screen requires replacement, interfering screen protector, internal system error, problems with lcd display, problems with the motherboard, faulty charging cable, faulty micro-usb jack, wifi off / airplane mode on, router and/or modem issues, motherboard needs replacement, kindle paperwhite 2nd generation troubleshooting.

Paperwhite will not Power on

The Paperwhite will not power on traditionally. Screen remains black after pressing the power button.

The Paperwhite's power button is not powering on the device. For a guide on replacing this piece, click here .

Connect the USB cable into the Paperwhite’s MicroUSB port, and ensure that the opposite end is connected to a power source. Once the device has fully charged, a green light will illuminate the bottom of the device. Attempt to power on the device. For instructions on how to replace the charging port, click here .

Ensure that both ends of the USB cable are in working condition. Make sure the USB cable can be fully inserted into the Micro-USB port. Also, try using the same USB cord to power a similar device if applicable. If the charger connects properly with the Paperwhite and other similar devices and still does not provide power, it should be replaced.

Plug the Paperwhite into a charger that you know functions properly. If the Paperwhite still does not charge, most likely the battery need to be replaced.

The Paperwhite has few components that impact its startup operations. If the device still will not power on with a battery in known working order, the devices motherboard may require a replacement. For instructions on how to replace the screen, click here .

Unresponsive Touchscreen

Screen is unresponsive to touch or will not turn on/load.

Screen protector may be inhibiting the screen from responding to the user. Remove the Screen Protector and clean the kindle’s bare screen by using a microfiber cloth. Replace Screen protector. If problem persists, remove Screen Protector altogether.

A portion of the internal software of the kindle may have crashed. Restart the operating system by performing a soft reset. To do this, turn off the power switch, open the back cover of the kindle and remove the battery. Wait one minute, and return the battery to its original location. Turn the Kindle on. If problem persists, reboot the system by pressing down the power button for 20 seconds. The reboot screen will appear once power button is released, select “Reboot System Now”. After a few minutes the Kindle should turn on.

If the Kindle is able to connect a computer and is able to transfer data through USB then the LCD Display is faulty and will need replacement.

If Problem persists after above methods have been exhausted, the Kindle’s Motherboard is probably not functioning and will need to be replaced. For instructions on replacing the motherboard, click here .

Paperwhite will not Charge

Paperwhite is unable to charge sufficiently to power the device.

If Paperwhite charging indicator does not light up while plugged in, Micro-USB jack might require a replacement.

Ensure charging cable is working properly by testing different ports, if cable is not working properly, change charging cable and try again, make sure an orange light turns on next to the Micro-USB jack when plugged in.

If the options above did not work, battery is defective and will require a replacement. For instructions on how to replace the battery, click here .

Unable to a Maintain Wireless Connection

Paperwhite unable to establish connection with Wi-Fi services.

Open up “Settings” option, from there, ensure that Airplane Mode is off. Touch the “Wi-Fi Networks” option to see the list of available connections; connect to your modem.

Sometimes the wireless issues with the Paperwhite are not caused by the device; they are caused by the router supplying the wireless connection. In this case, the router or modem that is being used to establish a connection may need to be restarted.

If none of the above solve your connectivity issues, then the motherboard might be damaged and needs to be replaced.

Freeze Problems and Solutions for Your Kindle Paperwhite

Fire tablets for dummies.

Book image

Sign up for the Dummies Beta Program to try Dummies' newest way to learn.

An e-book won't open or stops responding.

If those solutions don't work, the file might be corrupted. If that is the case, remove the item to see whether that solves the problem. Remember, if you bought the book from Amazon, it will be stored in the Cloud and you can redownload it to your device. If the book came from another source, make sure you have a backup before removing it.

Remove the item from your Kindle Paperwhite by following these steps:

From the Home screen, tap and hold down on the item.

A pop-up menu appears, with several options.

Tap the Remove from Device option or the Delete This Sample option (for samples).

The e-book or sample is removed from your Kindle Paperwhite.

Restart your Kindle Paperwhite by pressing and holding the power button for 45 seconds (7-15 seconds for a second-generation Kindle Paperwhite).

The device freezes or is very slow

Begin by performing a menu restart your Kindle Paperwhite:

Tap Menu→Settings.

Tap Menu→Restart.

(Restart is the third item on the drop-down menu that appears.) Your Kindle Paperwhite displays the start-up screen and a progress bar. After a minute or so, the device restarts and displays the Home screen.

Press and hold down the power button for 45 seconds (7-15 seconds for a second-generation Kindle Paperwhite).

The screen goes blank.

Press the power button again — just a simple press as if you were taking your Kindle Paperwhite out of sleep mode.

The start-up screen appears with a silhouetted child reading under a tree. In a few seconds, the device begins the restart process and displays a progress bar. When that restart is complete, you see the Home screen.

Sometimes a low battery can be the cause of unexpected Kindle Paperwhite behavior. If you continue to have problems, plug in your device to let it charge for at least an hour and then try a menu restart again, followed by a hard restart if necessary.

Kindle Giving You Trouble? Three Easy Fixes and Troubleshooting Steps

The Kindle range of e-readers from Amazon are excellent, lightweight devices that enable you to carry your library of books around wherever you go – but what happens when a Kindle goes wrong?

Amazon's popular eBook readers are easy to setup and use, but from time to time they can run into problems. Issues related to wireless networks or the free international 3G network that can be used for buying and downloading eBooks are perhaps the most common. There are other problems that can arise from time to time, however, such as the Kindle display freezing, or the battery running low. Indeed, the vast majority of problems you experience with a Kindle will be due to low battery or connectivity issues – or both.

Before you can deal with your Kindle's problems, you will need to establish which model you're using.

Note that we are dealing only with Kindle e-readers here, those that use e-ink displays rather than the Kindle Fire (more information about which you will find in our Kindle Fire guide ).

How to Identify Your Kindle

Before you can begin to effectively troubleshooting your Kindle, you will need to know which model you have. There are several different versions of the eBook reader, so being aware of which model is yours will help you to quickly find the right fix.

You might, for example, have a standard Kindle dating back to the first generation of devices, or the more recent version without the keyboard. Alternatively, you might be using a Kindle DX (with the larger, 9.7 inch screen) or a Kindle Touch, which combines the e-ink display with a touch screen.

If you're lucky, you might even have the Kindle Paperwhite with its free 3G global wireless.

A quick method of checking is by looking up the serial number. Do this by pressing Home > Menu > Settings > Device Info and read the serial number, which will begin with one of the following strings, revealing which model you have:

B001 = Kindle 1

B002 = Kindle 2 US

B003 = Kindle 2 International

B004 = Kinde DX US

B005 = Kindle DX International

B006 = Kindle 3 Wi-Fi and 3G

B008 = Kindle 3 Wi-Fi only

B009 = Kindle DX Graphite

B00A = Kindle 3 Wi-Fi and 3G

B00E = Kindle 4 NoTouch Silver (2011)

B00F = Kindle Touch 3G + Wi-Fi (Kindle 5) (U.S. and Canada)

B011 = Kindle Touch Wi-Fi (Kindle 5)

B010 = Kindle Touch 3G + Wi-Fi (Kindle 5) (Europe)

B012 = Kindle 5 (Unknown)

B023 = Kindle 4 NoTouch Black (2012)

B024 = Kindle PaperWhite Wi-Fi

B01B = Kindle PaperWhite 3G + Wi-Fi (U.S.) [Mostly]

(There are some variants, which you can find in the full list at wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Serial_Numbers )

Serial numbers might also be found on the reverse of the device, and on the box. You can also identify your Kindle by visiting Amazon, signing into your account and selecting Your Account > Manage Your Kindle > Manage Your Device > Registered Kindle Devices .

Once you've identified your Kindle ( this page at Amazon can also help ) you'll be ready to apply the correct fix.

There are several common problems you might experience with your Kindle – let's take a look at how to fix them.

Kindle Connection Issues

If your Kindle cannot connect to a wireless network, you can't download ebooks. Clearly this is a problem, but one that can usually be easily resolved. All Kindle devices have wireless connectivity.

To deal with wireless connectivity issues, begin by checking the strength of the signal. This is found in the top-right corner of the display on all models, and will also indicate your connection type. If you have a strong signal but cannot access the Kindle Store or your library, try disconnecting by opening Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi Settings ( Wi-Fi Networks on later models) and accessing a different network. You may find that restarting the device will help (see below).

Some Kindles have 3G, however. If your problem is with connecting to the 3G network, first check the Kindle 3G coverage map which should help you determine whether a 3G signal should be available to you or not.

Next, check your battery. If it is low, then you will need to charge before proceeding. Open the menu and activate the 3G connection, following this by syncing your device with the Kindle library ( Menu > Sync & Check for Items on later models).

Restarting your Kindle may help here – see the next section for details.

Remember that it can take a few moments for your Kindle to connect to a network after you switch it on.

Help - My Kindle Has Frozen!

An unresponsive Kindle is particularly frustrating. Restarting your device may help, but you should begin by charging it so that the e-reader has a full battery before proceeding.

To restart the Kindle (whichever model) hold the power button until the device powers down. Leave it for few moments before repeating the action to boot it back up. Be aware that the problem that caused the freeze may need resolving, so the reboot may be slow.

muo-kindle-troubleshooting-update

Another option is to install the latest update. Updates can be downloaded from Amazon and installed by connecting your Kindle to your computer via USB and dragging the downloaded file to your Kindle.

For serious freezing issues, you may need to reset your device. From a frozen Kindle, this is done by depressing the power switch for 20-30 seconds. Be aware, however, that this action will wipe your device, so you will need to login and resync all of your content. This step should only be taken in the event that no other fix works.

Maximise Battery Life

As you might have noticed, there are several problems that a low battery can cause on a Kindle e-reader – so what's the best way of making the charge last?

Well, we should start with the obvious. To keep your Amazon Kindle battery up, you should charge it whenever the battery is low. This will mean keeping an eye on the battery level in the top-right corner, of course, but this should allow you to fall into a routine of charging every few days or so.

To keep the battery as full as possible for as long as possible, however, you should be disconnecting from wireless networks and 3G (if applicable) whenever you're not using them. This should really be most of the time, unless you're using homebrew apps to browse the web and use your e-reader like a monochrome tablet.

Disconnecting is best done by switching to airplane mode, which you will find under Menu > Settings .

Other Kindle Troubleshooting Tips

The majority of issues with the Kindle e-readers can be fixed with a hard reset, as described above.

However, one or two cannot. For instance, problems with your payment method or your user account password will need to be dealt with by signing into the Manage Your Kindle page at Amazon, where you can make the necessary checks to ensure your details are all correct.

Once you've done this, any sign-in and issues with making payment for new ebooks should be sorted out. All you will need to do is to make another attempt at the sync or purchase you were trying to make on your Kindle, updating any changed details on your device to correspond with those on your account page.

You can also check sync issues by using the desktop Kindle app - this is a quick way of determining if there are any problems.

Straightforward Fixes Make E-Reading Easy

You'll have noticed above that I pointed out that these fixes and troubleshooting steps are aimed at the e-ink Kindles and not the Kindle Fire. The main reason for this is that the e-ink devices are so much easier to use, and simpler to fix; after all, they do much less, and in many ways are single-purpose devices, unlike the multipurpose Kindle Fire.

What this means is that you shouldn't have too many problems with your ebook reader – but if you do, you should be able to cope with them using the steps outlined here. And if you're considering moving to a Nook, be sure to read our comparison on Nook versus Kindle first.

If your Kindle becomes unresponsive, is running slow, or has frequent problems, you can troubleshoot it by trying a reset. A soft reset will solve most issues, but you can also reset the device to its factory settings (hard reset) for a more permanent solution. This guide will teach you how to reset any Kindle and help you troubleshoot problems with resetting and deregistering your e-reader.

Quick Steps

  • Swipe down from the top the screen.
  • Tap the Settings or All Settings icon.
  • Choose Device Options or select Menu .
  • Tap Factory Reset or Reset Device .

How to Hard Reset Your Kindle

A factory reset returns your Kindle to the same state it was in when you received it, so it’s a good option if a soft reset doesn't work, or you’re gifting or selling your Kindle. This process will delete all your personal information and any content you've downloaded to your Kindle.

Step 1 Swipe down from the top of the screen.

  • If the screen is unresponsive, do a soft reset first.

Step 2 Tap Settings or All Settings.

  • If you're using a 1st generation Kindle, select Reset to Factory Defaults instead, and follow the on-screen prompts to reset the Kindle.

Step 4 Tap Factory Reset.

  • After resetting your device, you can download any Kindle books from the cloud.
  • This method works for most modern Kindle models, including Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Scribe, Kindle Oasis, and Kindle Voyage. If you have an older Kindle, see Resetting Older Kindle Models for more specific instructions.
  • Doing a factory reset will also deregister your Kindle. If you run into problems with the factory reset, try deregistering your Kindle manually by going to https://amazon.com/mydevices , selecting your Kindle, and clicking the Deregister button. [2] X Research source

How to Soft Reset Your Kindle

If your Kindle is slow, freezing, unresponsive, not syncing, won't connect to Wi-Fi, or otherwise misbehaving, a soft reset (restart) can clear up these glitches. This type of reset won't delete your settings or books, so it makes a great first troubleshooting step for any Kindle problems.

Step 1 Press and hold the power button.

  • If the screen goes blank or you don't wind up seeing a power menu, don't worry—just continue holding down the power button for 40 seconds, and then release the button to restart your Kindle.
  • If you have a 1st generation Kindle,
  • If you have a 1st Generation Kindle and cannot restart it, turn the power switch off, open the back cover, and remove the battery. Wait 1 minute and put the battery back in place. Replace the cover and turn the power switch to “On.”

Step 2 Select Restart.

  • You can also restart your Kindle by swiping down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Actions menu and selecting All Settings > Device Options > Restart .
  • If the Kindle freezes again or doesn’t respond to the reset, charge it for at least 30 minutes, then try the soft reset again.

Step 1 1st Generation Kindle.

  • Factory reset: Turn the power switch On and open the back cover with your finger or a small sharp object. Find the tiny hole, which is the reset button. Take a sharp pen, extended paperclip, SIM tool, or toothpick, and press the button for 30 seconds or until your Kindle turns off. Wait until your Kindle reboots itself. [4] X Research source
  • Soft reset (reboot): Turn the power switch Off , remove the back cover of your Kindle, and remove the battery. Wait one minute, reinsert the battery, and turn your Kindle back on.

Step 2 2nd Generation Kindle.

  • Factory reset: Slide and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Immediately after this, press and hold the Home button until your Kindle screen flashes. When your Kindle finishes rebooting, it will be restored to its original factory settings. [5] X Research source
  • Soft reset (reboot): Slide and hold the power switch for 40 seconds, then release the switch.

Step 3 Kindle DX (2nd Gen).

  • Factory reset: Slide and hold the power switch for at least 20 seconds, let go of the switch, and immediately press and hold down the Home button until the Kindle restarts.
  • Soft reset (reboot): Charge your Kindle DX for about 30 minutes. After that, unplug your Kindle, slide and hold the power switch for 40 seconds, and then release the switch. [6] X Research source

Step 4 Kindle Keyboard (3rd Gen).

  • Factory reset: First, try a soft reset, as detailed below. If that doesn't work, charge your Kindle for at least 30 minutes. Then, press the Home button, then the Menu button, select Settings , and then press the Menu button again. Select Reset to Factory Defaults , then wait for your Kindle to reset. [7] X Research source
  • Soft reset (reboot): Slide and hold the power switch for 15 seconds, then release the button. The screen will go blank for about 30 seconds and then turn back on. [8] X Research source

Step 5 Kindle (4th & 5th Gen, including Kindle Touch).

  • Factory reset: Press the Home button, press the Menu button, select Settings , then choose Reset to Factory Defaults .
  • Soft reset (reboot): Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds, then release. After 30 seconds, your Kindle will restart. [9] X Research source

Step 6 Kindle Paperwhite (original) .

  • Factory reset: Tap the 3 lines on the top right corner of the Home screen, select Settings . Click the three-line menu again and select Reset Device .
  • Soft reset (reboot): Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds, then release. If this doesn't fix your Kindle Paperwhite, plug it into power for a few minutes and then try again.

Step 7 Kindle Fire & Fire HD tablets.

  • Factory reset: To reset your Kindle Fire , swipe down twice from the top of the Home screen, tap Settings (the gear), and go to Device Options > Restore to Factory Defaults . If this doesn't work, turn off your Kindle Fire tablet, press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously for about 5 seconds to start recovery mode, then select Wipe data/factory reset . [10] X Research source
  • Soft reset (reboot): Press and hold the power button until your Kindle Fire turns off. Wait about a minute, then turn it back on.

Step 1 The screen is unresponsive or frozen.

  • Plug your Kindle into a power source that is not your computer, such as a wall charger. The charging light should illuminate—if it doesn't, or if it turns off after a few seconds, try a different charger, and make sure the light is steady. [11] X Research source
  • Allow the Kindle to charge for a few hours, then remove the Kindle from the charger.
  • If you still see the Critical Battery screen, disconnect the charger, hold the power slider for 20 seconds, and then release it.
  • As soon as you release the power switch, hold down the Home button for 30-45 seconds—after about that long, the Kindle's screen will flash. Release the Home button when you see the flash.
  • Your Kindle will now boot into recovery mode. Press and hold the R key until the Kindle's screen flashes again.
  • Even if you see the Critical Battery screen again, plug the Kindle back in, then wait for your Kindle to restart to the Home screen.
  • If this doesn't fix the screen, the Kindle is not restorable. Since you're using an older model, your best option is to get a newer Kindle.

Step 3 VoiceView isn't working after a factory reset.

  • First, put your Kindle into airplane mode by swiping down on the Home screen and tapping the Airplane Mode icon. [13] X Research source ttps://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GGDFGS7YKTQRS6B9
  • In a web browser, go to https://amazon.com/mydevices and log in to your Amazon account.
  • Select your Kindle, click Deregister , and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once deregistered, go to Settings > Device Options (or Menu ) > Factory Reset or Reset to Factory Defaults to reset your Kindle.

Step 5 Kindle freezes during reboot/restart.

What to Know

  • Factory reset: From the Home screen, go to Menu (three lines) > Settings > Menu > Reset Device .
  • Hard restart: Hold the Sleep button until the Paperwhite restarts (about 20 seconds).
  • A factory reset will delete all of your books and settings.

You should factory reset your Kindle Paperwhite if it stops working correctly or you're going to give it to someone else. Here's how to wipe your e-reader, along with when a hard restart of your Kindle Paperwhite might be a better idea.

How Do You Do a Hard Reset on a Kindle Paperwhite?

A hard reset removes all of the data from your Kindle and returns it to factory conditions. You do it through the Settings menu.

Charge your Kindle Paperwhite before doing a hard reset to avoid potential errors.

From the Paperwhite's home screen , select the More menu, which looks like three horizontal lines.

Tap Settings .

Select the More menu again.

Different options will appear in this More menu. Tap Reset Device .

A warning message will appear, reminding you that resetting your Kindle will return the device to factory defaults. The process will delete your settings and library, so if you're keeping the Paperwhite afterward, you'll have to download all of your books again.

Tap Yes to continue.

After the Paperwhite resets, it's ready for you to pass it on to its new owner. If you reset the e-reader due to it malfunctioning, you'll need to do the initial setup again, including signing in to your Amazon account, downloading your books, and making any settings changes you'd made previously.

How Do I Reset an Unresponsive Kindle Paperwhite?

If your Kindle Paperwhite is frozen or otherwise unresponsive, you may want to do a hard restart. A hard restart differs from a reset because it doesn't reset the settings or delete your library. Instead, it just forces the device to reboot. It's a less drastic measure than a factory reset, which you should only do if you have regular issues using it or are planning to sell, trade, or give away the device.

To do a hard restart on a Paperwhite that isn't responding, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the bottom edge of the device. After about five seconds, the Power Menu may appear, which contains options to restart the Paperwhite or turns off the Paperwhite's screen , but you should keep holding the button down even if you see this. Eventually, the device will shut down and restart. The time you have to hold it may vary, but it normally takes about 20 seconds before the device responds.

The process to restore a Kindle Fire tablet to its default settings is similar to doing it for an e-reader. Go to Settings  >  Device Options  >  Reset to Factory Defaults  >  Reset . If you can't find the setting there, try Settings gear  >  More  >  Device  >  Reset to Factory Defaults  >  Erase everything .

On a Kindle Fire, you can reset the parental control password by entering the wrong code five times. After that, you'll receive a prompt to reset it using the Amazon account linked to the device. The Kindle Paperwhite doesn't have an easy workaround; you'll need to do a factory reset. To do so, enter 111222777 as the passcode, and the Paperwhite will delete its contents and begin the setup process.
