IMS Outstanding Dissertation Award 2023: Peter Asimov (Award Winner) and Alana Mailes (1s Honorary Mention)

We are delighted to hear news of the IMS Outstanding Dissertation Award decisions for 2023, which honour two of Cambridge’s Early Career Fellows in Music. We offer warmest congratulations to both.

Award Winner

Asimov, Peter: “ Comparative Philology, French Music, and the Composition of Indo-Europeanism from Fétis to Messiaen ” Clare College, Cambridge (UK), 2020.

Peter’s current projects include performance-driven historical studies of French modernism, the musical work of Yvonne Loriod (1924-2010), and the intellectual history of rhythm; in addition to several publications in progress drawn from his thesis. Peter is currently a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the Faculty, and Lumley Research Fellow in Music at Magdalene College.

1st Honorary Mention

Mailes, Alana: “ Mobility, Diplomacy, and Musical Exchange between England and Venice, 1600–1660 ” Harvard University, Cambridge (US), 2021.

Alana’s dissertation explores the contributions of diplomats, spies, merchants, and other travellers to musical exchange between Italy and Stuart England. In it she argues that Anglo-Venetian musical interactions were critical to shifting political and commercial relations between the two rival maritime empires. Alana is currently Thole Research Fellow in Music at Trinity Hall.

Elizabeth G. Elmi awarded 2020 IMS Outstanding Dissertation Award

Posted on September 28, 2020 by Sarah J. Slover

ims dissertation award

In her dissertation, titled “Singing Lyric among Local Aristocratic Networks in the Aragonese-Ruled Kingdom of Naples: Aesthetic and Political Meaning in the Written Records of an Oral Practice,” advised by Prof. Massimo Ossi , Elmi examined the predominantly oral practice of singing lyric poetry among members of the Neapolitan aristocracy in Southern Italy during the late fifteenth century.

The International Musicological Society Outstanding Dissertation Award (IMSODA) is open to scholars who have completed their doctoral dissertation in the field of music within the last two years of the deadline. The winning dissertation—which can be written in any language—is then published as an online open access monograph.

The International Musicological Society (IMS) was born on the centenary of Beethoven’s death: 1927. At that time, the idea of music as a universal language was still at its height, modeled on Beethoven’s legacy. It was a unifying idea; after the ravages of World War I, musicologists in Europe sought to establish a common purpose that could transcend enemy lines, open borders, and usher in an international society that would work together to protect and advance the object of their study. The vision was of a global society connected by a music of universal reach. Or, as it states in the statutes:

“The purpose of IMS is to further musicological research in its broadest sense among all peoples and nations”; or to put it in more modern terms, “the advancement of musicological research on the basis of international cooperation.”

Open—global—collaborative, general fund.

This fund supports current IMS needs, including those of IMS Regional Associations and Study Groups, hybrid and online conferencing, publications, cash prizes for winners of the IMS Outstanding Dissertation Award, and the development of new programs. It is a general fund that can be used to respond quickly to pressing needs, provide emergency relief grants, and make up for shortfalls in funding for existing programs and events. Contributions to this fund are not earmarked and allow the IMS greater flexibility in putting support where it is most needed at the moment.

Travel Fund

This fund provides need-based conference travel grants for members who are presenting at an IMS Congress or Intercongressional Symposium. First implemented as a pilot program in 2022 for the 21st Quinquennial IMS Congress in Athens, that year the travel fund disbursed 25,000 euros to thirty-two presenters. 100% of donations go directly to members whose travel costs are prohibitive and otherwise might not be able to attend an IMS meeting.

Membership Fund

This fund helps to underwrite membership fees for those in need. The IMS does not offer free membership, but if for any reason fees should be prohibitive, members may apply for support from the Membership Fund. 100% of donations to this fund go directly to fees for members.
