Student Opportunities

Research admission.

  • Integrated PhD Programme in Physical Sciences.
  • Joint Astronomy Programme (students wishing to apply for this Programme should indicate Astronomy and Astrophysics as one of their department preferences when filling up the application form for Research Programmes).
  • Can I join your astronomy programme after high school? No, right now we do not have any provision of taking students after high school for our programme or any other programme in IISc.
  • What shall I do after my high school if I want to be an astrophysicist? Nowadays it is necessary to have a very solid foundation of physics in order to be a professional astrophysicist.  Most of our students have come from a physics background.  However, astronomical instrumentation also requires engineering skills in subjects like electronics.  We had some students from engineering background as well.  In fact, there had also been a few cases where a student with an engineering background blossomed into a theoretical astrophysicist instead going into astronomical instrumentation!  We do not recommend specialization in astronomy/astrophysics too early in your career.
