When somebody understood the assignment, they did something incredible and gave it their all. For example, when a person designs a fabulous outfit and looks stunning, they understood the assignment.

Origin of Understood the Assignment

The slang phrase "understood the assignment" was popularized in 2021 by American rapper Tay Money's song "The Assignment." For example, lyrics from her song are, "Tay, you killed this. I understood the assignment."

The phrase plays off how excellent students or employees understand assignments in school or the workplace really well and subsequently produce stellar work. In the fall of 2021, the phrase grew in popularity on social sites, like TikTok and Twitter, as people used it to remark about fantastic and on point things.

For example, a fan may say, "Tiger Woods understood the assignment," when the golfer beats the rest of the field so badly that he makes them look like amateurs. Or, a musician may have stunning album art, and someone may share it on Twitter, saying, "The new Cardi B album cover understood the assignment."

There are a lot of amazing actors out there, some of them, however, have one very successful role and that becomes all that they are recognized for *cough cough,* Ferris Bueller, *cough cough.* There are other movie stars that are able to completely transform themselves into every role that comes their way, sometimes to the point that you forget who the actor even was in the first place.

I think this one is undebatable. To say Robin Williams 'understood the assignment' is nearly an understatement, Robin low-key invented the assignment. He always delivered 100%.

‘He secretly did you a favor babe’: Woman catches bartender adding only 1 shot to her double drink

In a viral video, TikToker Vanessa Cervantes Martinez (@la_guerita.20) caught her bartender adding only one shot to her drink despite her ordering a double shot. 

Martinez begins the video by sharing: “When you ask the bartender guy to make your drink with a double shot but he noticed it’s your 5th drink.” As she says this, Martinez records the bartender as he makes her drinks. 

He places a large cup of ice on the bar. He pours the first shot of clear liquor, which is hefty and overflowing. A smirk emerges on his face, and he quickly looks at her. Then he begins to pour the second shot. Barley anything comes out of the bottle of liquor. The second shot is nonexistent. 

In the caption of the video she adds, “He didn’t understand the assignment.” The video has over 897,000 views and hundreds of comments, sparking much discourse. 

Many viewers disagreed with Martinez, arguing that the bartender did “understand the assignment” by not giving her an additional shot. They assumed he did this because she was visibly drunk.

“He secretly did you a favor babe,” one viewer shared. Another added, “He understood the assignment in my book.” Martinez responded, “He really did cause the next day it was bad.” 

Others chimed in with personal experiences and anecdotes. “I used to bar-tend weddings and sometimes the bride didn’t want the guests to get too drunk,” one shared. 

However, some viewers felt if Martinez paid for the double shot, she should receive it. “This is good if it’s an open bar but not if you’re paying for a double,” one viewer commented. Another added, “No because did you pay!?! Run sis her shot!!” 

Do bartenders have a responsibility to cut drunk patrons off?

The discourse around the responsibilities of bartenders cutting off drunk patrons is not just limited to the comments of Martinez’s viral video. There are many bartender Reddit threads grappling with the question: “When and why do you cut people off?” 

In the state of California, where Martinez is based, the answer to the question legally is pretty straightforward. According to the Alexander Law Group , “In California, the law is clear that a third party cannot be civilly liable for continuing to serve an over-intoxicated person, even if that person later drives drunk.”

Justin Timberlake arrested, charged with DWI in the Hamptons

The pop star has been ordered to appear virtually in court on July 26.

Singer Justin Timberlake has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated in the Hamptons, according to police.

Timberlake drove through a stop sign and swerved into a lane of oncoming traffic at 12:37 a.m. Tuesday, according to Sag Harbor Village police.

The pop star was driving a 2025 grey BMW XM on Madison Street when he failed to stop and failed to maintain his lane of travel. When police pulled him over, they said Timberlake "was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated condition," according to police.

Police determined Timberlake was driving drunk, had bloodshot, glassy eyes and "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" emanating from his breath, according to the criminal complaint. He also had slowed speech, was unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on a field sobriety test, the complaint said.

Timberlake told the arresting officer he had only one drink, according to the criminal complaint.

Timberlake, 43, was held overnight for arraignment, after which he was released Tuesday morning on his own recognizance.

He has been ordered to appear virtually in Sag Harbor Village Court on July 26.

Timberlake's lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., said in a statement Wednesday, "I look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake on these allegations. I will have a lot to say at the appropriate time but am currently awaiting full discovery from the District Attorney’s office."

Timberlake has two concerts in Chicago this weekend and two shows in New York City next week as part of his "The Forget Tomorrow World Tour" in support of his sixth studio album, "Everything I Thought It Was."

ABC News has reached out to Timberlake's representative for comment.

Timberlake first gained massive popularity as a member of the boy band *NYSNC in the late '90s and early 2000s before striking out on his own in 2002. His first release, "Justified," sold millions of copies and featured the massive hits "Cry Me A River" and "Rock Your Body."

He has won 10 Grammys, four Emmys and a host of Billboard Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. Timberlake was even nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for his theme song to "Trolls," the single "Can't Stop the Feeling!"

Timberlake reunited with his *NYSNC bandmates last year to much fanfare for the theme to the "Trolls Band Together" soundtrack. He also reunited with *NYSNC for a performance in March.

He's also starred in several big-time box office movies, like "The Social Network," "Bad Teacher" and "Friends With Benefits."

"He looks like he's about to cry me a river": Internet awash in memes after Justin Timberlake's DWI

The singer's recent arrest in the hamptons has thrown his public image and past treatment of women in the spotlight, by gabriella ferrigine.

Justin Timberlake in the early morning hours on Tuesday was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in a wealthy Hamptons community in Long Island, New York, sparking a deluge of backlash online, largely in the form of memes related to the singer's music or past career indiscretions. 

The police report filed by Sag Harbor Village Police Officer Michael Arkinson at the time of the arrest determined that Timberlake's eyes were "bloodshot and glassy," and that "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath."

"He was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests," the report added, per NBC.  An anonymous source speaking to Page Six reportedly shared that the arresting officer was “so young that he didn’t even know who the pop star was.”

“He didn’t recognize him or his name,” the source told the outlet. 

Another Page Six source added, “Justin said under his breath, ‘This is going to ruin the tour.’ The cop replied, ‘What tour?’ Justin said, ‘The world tour.'”

After allegedly telling the officer that he'd only consumed one martini, Timberlake — who recently kicked off his "Forget Tomorrow" world tour and is slated to perform at Madison Square Garden on June 25 and 26 — was charged with driving while intoxicated and was held overnight before being taken to Sag Harbor Village Justice Court the following morning to be arraigned. The New York Times reported that he was released without bail. 

Timberlake's music career kicked off in the late '90s and early aughts — when he was a member of the hugely popular boy band,  'N SYNC  — and continued after he splintered off from the group in 2002 as a solo artist. 

Social media was quick to jest about the "Sexyback" singer's arrest. “Sir I’m gonna need you to step out of the vehicle and walk in a straight line," wrote one X/Twitter user above a video of Timberlake dancing frenetically onstage. The post has been viewed more than 6 million times. 

“Now bring sexy forward, in a straight line," tweeted another user in response to the clip.

"I heard that when he asked when the trial would be he was told, 'It’s going to be May,'" wrote one Instagram user under a post of Timberlake's mugshot, alluding to 'N SYNC's hit 2000 song, "It's Gonna Be Me."

"Honest to God, if Justin Timberlake had said to me 'This is going to ruin the world tour' to me, I would have asked 'The Trolls World Tour'?" one X/Twitter user wrote, referencing Timberlake's role in the film franchise by playing Branch in 2016 animated children's movie, for which he also contributed the song "Can't Stop the Feeling!" to the soundtrack.

The incident also marks the latest in a series of publicly scrutinized career missteps that have marred the pop star's image, namely, those including singers Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. Timberlake has faced criticism for his treatment of singer Britney Spears, who he dated in the early 2000s. In Spears' 2023 memoir, "The Woman In Me," she revealed that she had an abortion when she was 18 because Timberlake "wasn't ready to be a father," calling the experience "agonizing."

"Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy,” she wrote. “He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young." 

“I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book. If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry,” Spears had later posted on social media. "I also wanted to say I am in love with Justin Timberlake's new song 'Selfish' it is soo good and how come every time I see Justin and Jimmy together I laugh so hard ??? PS 'Sanctified' is wow too," she added, referring to one of Timberlake's appearances on comedian Jimmy Fallon's "The Tonight Show."

Speaking to a New York City audience in February 2024, Timberlake seemed to respond to Spears' claims mere days after she apologized. “l'd like to take this opportunity to apologize — to absolutely f***ing nobody,” Timberlake said.

Following Timberlake's remarks, Spears scrubbed her apology from the internet and wrote, “Someone told me someone was talking s**t about me on the streets!!! Do you want to bring it to the court or will you go home crying to your mom like you did last time??? I’m not sorry!!!"

Per the NYT, Timberlake jested at Spears' prior virginity during "Saturday Night Live" and separately spoke openly about their sexual relationship. Following the then-young couple's breakup, Timberlake released "Cry Me A River," a revenge track about a cheating partner ostensibly aimed at Spears. The song's music video  even featured a woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to her. 

Following the recent arrest, Spears seemed to indirectly comment on her ex's legal plight when she posted an image of a cocktail on the day he was arrested, captioning the post,  “It’s the little things you know!!!”

Meanwhile, many of the memes are now pulling in Janet Jackson. This most likely is in reference to the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show, in which Timberlake reached across Jackson's chest and ripped off a section of her bustier to reveal her breast. The incident, known as "the wardrobe malfunction," spurred significant public outrage directed at Jackson — she subsequently lost her record label deal, movie deals, and sponsors, and was even barred from attending the Grammys.  In contrast, Timberlake's career took off. 

In an Instagram post shared in 2021, Timberlake acknowledged that he owed both women an apology and could have better defended them from slander. “I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right,” he wrote in the post, which is no longer available. “I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson.”

In addition to sarcastic and humorous memes, Timberlake's DWI has also generated online discourse about his prior treatment of women. 

"Anxiously awaiting Justin Timberlake to release a statement somehow blaming Britney for his recent DUI," wrote one used on X/Twitter.

Former economics and finance editor at The Guardian, Heidi N. Moore, argued on X/Twitter that "'hating Justin Timberlake' brings so many people together."

"People who love Janet Jackson. People who love Britney Spears. Millennials who resented the bodyshaming of Jessica Simpson. Who else am I missing; what other women did he screw over?"

Welcome back to your weekly update on Australian politics, where political correspondent Brett Worthington catches you up on the biggest developments.

Not so long ago Peter Dutton and his merry band in the Coalition had a simple message for voters: "If you don't know, vote no."

It was a potent message that worked a treat in harpooning Labor's efforts to enshrine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the nation's first people in the constitution.

It's less than a year on and the party of "don't know, vote no" — which includes politicians accused of pushing misinformation during the Voice to Parliament debate — looks to have had a change of heart.

Forget the scare campaigns and let's stick to the facts, Coalition MPs have declared in the wake of their leader unveiling seven planned nuclear power plant sites without any costings.

The death of shame in Australian politics isn't new, but the brazen nature of the Coalition's efforts to prosecute its plans for a nuclear age take boldness to new levels. 

There has been no shortage of coverage about the opposition's pledge, including that it drew parallels to John Hewson's ill-fated Fightback policy. Not that Hewson was keen on the comparison when presented with that notion by Annabel Crabb on Wednesday . 

"The comparison is most insulting, given the detailed policy work — including costings — in Fightback," the former Liberal leader-turned-renewables advocate said.

"This is the scam of the year. No detail, no costings."

You get the sense he's not a fan. 

More broadly, the nuclear rollout, complete with snap party room meeting, proved bumpy, with Nationals deputy leader Perin Davey promptly being rebuffed by her leader for suggesting communities would have the ability to refuse a nuclear plant (as had previously been the party's policy).

"No, she's not correct," Nationals Leader David Littleproud said on Wednesday afternoon. By Thursday morning, Dutton was all but saying the Coalition would be telling those communities and site owners what was good for them (and anyone who has seen The Castle will know all too well the power of the federal government to forcibly acquire whatever land it wants). 

Davey wasn't alone in getting some of the details wrong — and you can hardly blame them.

Having long been told the opposition was carrying out "comprehensive" and "bulletproof" work mapping out a radical overhaul of Australia's energy mix, all the party received when it was asked to sign off on the proposal was an oral briefing, according to ABC journalist Jane Norman's reporting. 

The party room was promised detailed notes, but all they got was a copy of a press release the Coalition distributed 15 minutes later.

A nuclear debate awaits

By Thursday, Dutton was insisting the pesky details Hewson was seeking — like, you know, the costs — would be unveiled before the next election. That promise should come with a serving of salt: just a week ago, Dutton was shredding his earlier commitment to release a 2030 emissions target before the next federal election. 

The opposition leader's pitch for nuclear is being levelled squarely at the households shivering through the winter and terrified at the prospect of a huge energy bill.

But it's not just voters Dutton will need to win over. There's the small matter of the states, all of whom seemingly don't want nuclear power plants. Even the Queensland LNP leader, who within months looks set to be the state's next premier, is refusing to get on board.

That's not to worry, a zealous federal Liberal told the ABC, insisting David Crisafulli could be convinced to "roll over" on nuclear , "as he did with the Voice and [state] budget". You get the sense the same politician won't publicly be calling him a lapdog during the state election campaign, but it would make for quite the sign. 

Dutton, channelling Paul Keating, joked that you wouldn't get between a premier and a pot of money, suggesting the states could be convinced to go nuclear for wads of cash.

It might not be the last time he borrows from Keating. To get nuclear power, Dutton will need the Senate — infamously described by the former Labor prime minister as "unrepresentative swill" — to overturn a national ban. It's been almost two decades since the Coalition had full control of the Senate, which means Dutton will need crossbench support to get the votes through a chamber where the Greens hold the balance of power.

Getting a majority will be no small task if recent polls are to be believed , with roughly a third of the country continually vowing to vote for anyone but the two major parties.

A visit years in the making

The visit of a world leader always brings with it planning to the nth degree. 

A ring of steel was constructed, protesters were restricted, and flags were flown outside Parliament House to greet Chinese Premier Li Qiang when he came to town this week . 

The aim was to show relations were back on a level footing after years in the diplomatic freezer. 

Anthony Albanese and his deputy-in-all-but-title Penny Wong have spent the last two years maintaining the line left behind by the Coalition while also seeking to repair a shattered relationship between Australia and its largest trading partner. 

If you had drunk every time one of them mentioned the word "stabilise" in the last two years, you'd have been out cold on the floor for quite some time. But stabilise they have, with China removing all trade sanctions besides those on rock lobsters (which was not-so-subtly highlighted when lobster was served at an official function for Li in WA on Tuesday ).

By and large, the trip went as planned. Both countries expressed a desire to work closer together and Albanese, behind closed doors, again raised the plight of Australians on death row, like academic Yang Hengjun .

Likely unplanned was Albanese accidentally misnaming the Chinese premier during a lunch in parliament's Great Hall. (It's of course awkward when you call a bloke the name of his now-deceased predecessor, but maybe it goes some way to counter the Coalition's suggestions that Labor was a pack of Manchurian candidates for the Chinese Communist Party . But we digress.)

Also unplanned, at least from the Australian side, were the efforts to prevent journalist Cheng Lei from doing her job.

Chinese officials sparked days of furore after they were seen seemingly trying to block Cheng — an Australian-Chinese journalist who was held in a Chinese jail for more than three years — from the cameras set up to capture Albanese and Li signing documents.

Cheng proved something of a rarity in the media in that when presented with the chance to make a story about herself, she largely left it for others to prosecute. 

It took Albanese a couple of goes to land his response. After initially insisting he hadn't seen the incident, on Tuesday he dubbed it clumsy . Wong later confirmed that the PM had raised it with Li. 

The Coalition was quick out of the gates to label Albanese's response "pathetic" and make it known that Dutton had raised it with Li when the two held talks on Monday afternoon. 

Pez dispensed awards

Former Home Affairs boss Mike "Pez" Puzzullo — who the government sacked last year after he breached the public service code of conduct — is no stranger to high-profile events inside Parliament House, having been a senior public servant for decades.

After months on the sidelines, he made an appearance to classify the Chinese officials' actions in the "heart of our democracy" as a "disgrace".

"To have that democratic space desecrated in the way that it was by those Chinese officials, who, no doubt, were acting under instructions, … was frankly disgraceful," he told the ABC's Afternoon Briefing.

"And full kudos to the Australian officials — there was at least one, if not two female Australian officials who, frankly, should be awarded public service medals on the spot for their grace, their resolve, and their courage and their judgement."

Looking at the list of previous recipients of public service medals, others have received them for far less. 

Not alone in wanting to go home

Looming large over the Chinese premier's visit was a state of panda-monium (I'll see myself out) over the fate of South Australia's much loved $1-million-a-year rented pandas, Wang Wang and Fu Ni . 

Cuddly and tourist-attracting they might be, procreating pandas they are not. 

One of the premier's first tasks was to announce Wang Wang and Fu Ni would be heading home after 15 long years in Australia.

A relieved Zoos SA seemed rather chuffed that they'll be replaced with a male and female panda, almost at breeding age. 

As they await their arrival, the zoo's task will be to curate the requisite mood music and keep everything crossed that the pitter-patter of panda paws could one day feature in its future. 

As for who pays? Well, that remains unclear.

The Commonwealth picked up the rental charges for Wang Wang and Fu Ni during their first decade, while South Australia covered the lease extension for the last five years. 

The Chinese premier appeared less concerned about costs than he was excited about the prospect of the pair going home. 

"Wang Wang and Fu Ni have been away from home for 15 years. I guess they must have missed their home a lot," he said through a translator. 

Jailed academic Dr Yang is too missing home and in much poorer health than the pandas. Yet the Chinese government has offered few signs that he'll be repatriated any time soon.
