A simple bridge truss was the first structure I ever analyzed. The simple combination of beams that could hold cars, trains, and trucks over long spans of water fascinated me. Having the tools to analyze the loads on the truss further increased my interest in structures. I encountered the bridge in a textbook for my first engineering class.

Knowing that the professor, Mr. John Doe, was a tough teacher, I asked him for the textbook so I could study and get ready for the class over the summer. Just arrived from Belize, I was determined to succeed. In class we learned about forces on simple members and then we put the members together to form a simple truss. At this point I had almost decided that structural engineering was the career for me. From there the class just took off: We went on to frames, distributed loads, considered friction; basically we were incorporating real world considerations into structural members. I loved the practical, problem solving aspects of the field.

At UC my classes were even more advanced. In my analysis and design classes, I especially enjoyed studying steel design because we not only learned the use of the load resistance factor design but also applied that knowledge — I designed a four-story building. The professor was a practicing engineer, and he always related the subject to real life steel structures he had engineered, for example, the SB Medical Center, an all steel building with a base isolated campus. This is the kind of project on which I would like to work, designing the structure and considering how the building will respond to ground motion. After two quarters of structural analysis, I had come as close as possible to analyzing real world structures. Looking back I realize, I had learned great tools for structural analysis, but my "tool box" was still inadequate. I lacked a very important tool: finite element analysis. According to my professor, finite element analysis has revolutionized structural analysis.

Although I liked my classes, my internship experiences really confirmed my interest in structural engineering. While working at Caltrans as a student volunteer, I reviewed computer grading output for streets under construction. The computer suggested numbers for the road grading, and I had to plot the numbers and make sure there were no abrupt grade changes so the water can drain off easily to the sides of the road. It was exciting to know that I was the last checkpoint before the whole project went for approval. It was enjoyable working on something real — Main Street — but I was somewhat disappointed I did not have the chance to work on any structures.

At UC I volunteered through the Student Research Program to work in the geotechnical library. I worked directly with a doctoral student and helped him to develop a geotechnical data base for the local area. I interpreted the data Caltrans had collected and recorded it in a form accessible to the computer and easy to read. It took hours to finish the job, but I enjoyed the precision involved so I did not mind putting in the time. My supervisor liked my work so much, he hired me to continue the project during the summer. Working on this project also showed me the importance of soils in determining buildings’ responses to earthquakes and awakened my interest in the response of skyscrapers to seismic stress and movement.

At First Choice U, I plan to enroll in the structural engineering and geomechanics program. In this program I hope to draw on my structural analysis and geotechnical research background as a foundation for studying more advanced concepts. I am particularly interested in researching the ties between the structural engineering, geomechanics, and applied mechanics. I believe research is necessary to acquire data and formulate theories, but it is just as important to know how to apply those theories and use that data in the real world. I hope to be involved in some structurally related research at First Choice U. I am particularly interested in two research facilities: The Structures and Composites Laboratory and the Earthquake Engineering Center.

After completing my degree in engineering and working on engineering projects, I know I want to design structures. That is what has fascinated me since I took Mr. Doe’s class. I also know, however, that designing structures of a complexity that appeals to me requires "more tools in my toolbox." Those I can acquire only by continuing my education. To be competent and competitive I will need a masters degree. After completing my degree, I would like to work for an American engineering consulting firm and engineer complex structures and tall buildings, perhaps focusing on the problems surrounding designing for earthquakes. My long-term goals are to return to Belize and found my own engineering consulting firm there.

Structural engineering will allow me to pursue a career where I can be creatively involved in problem-solving and design functional structures, like the simple truss bridge that initially captivated me in Mr. Doe’s class. My classes, work at Caltrans, and internship in geotechnical engineering have increased my knowledge of and interest in structural engineering since I first looked at the textbook shortly after my arrival in the U.S. A masters degree will give me the up-to-date tools and knowledge to be competitive and competent.

This new idea changed how things were made put together and fixed which led directly to the Industrial Revolution. The American engineer Eli Whitney is at the heart of this change. It was his work that made the idea of replaceable parts a reality. This change made it possible for modern assembly lines and mass production which changed the way industries and products were made.

Eli Whitney made many important accomplishments but the cotton gin is what he is most famous for. Whitney became interested in guns in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Guns were made by hand before his time and each one was different. If a part broke a new one had to be made just right which took a long time and cost a lot of money. She saw a way to make things better

Whitney got a job from the government in 1798 to make 10000 muskets. He had the brave idea to make these muskets with standard parts that could be quickly switched out if they broke. Thus every part from every gun could fit into every other musket of the same type. Whitney’s plan was big; it called for faster cheaper production with workers who were less skilled. To make his point he famously showed off his muskets by taking them apart and putting them back together with odd parts. This showed government officials that the idea could work.

Whitney wasn’t the only one thinking about this though. European inventors had been playing around with parts that could be switched out for a while. For example the French blacksmith Honoré Blanc had already tried unifying parts of guns. Even though other people had tried this before Whitney she was the one who made it work on a big scale in the U.S.

Whitney’s work had an effect on many things not just making muskets. His success paved the way for the assembly line a way of making things that Henry Ford would later perfect for making cars. Manufacturers could make things faster more cheaply and for less money if they used standard parts. These changes not only made things cheaper but they also made them easier for everyone to get. It was a big step toward the system that is based on consumers today.

Parts that can be switched out didn’t just change the gun business. They spread to other industries such as electronics tools and home products. Products were easier to keep up and last longer because they could be fixed by replacing just one part instead of having a new one made just for them. The fact that these goods were durable and easy to fix made them more appealing which increased the demand for mass-produced goods.

Parts that can be switched out are still very much used in current making. Standardization and flexibility are two ideas that are at the heart of all production processes around the world. Building on what Whitney and his peers did methods like lean production and just-in-time inventory management are now used. The use of replaceable parts is changing because of global supply lines and new technologies like AI and robots. This is making things more efficient and leading to new ideas.

In short the discovery of parts that could be switched out changed the way things were made. Building on the work of European inventors Eli Whitney showed how this idea could be used in real life which completely changed the way things were made. The production line and modern industry were made possible by his work with muskets. This made things cheaper and easier to get. This new idea led to economic growth and the rise of consumer society. Its ideas are still at the heart of how factories work today. As technology improves replaceable parts continue to change how we make and use things which shows that Whitney’s original work is still important today.

What is Engineering?

"Science can amuse and fascinate us all, but it is engineering that changes the world." - Isaac Asimov 1

Engineers use math, science, material properties, and computer methods to solve problems and design new products. There is no limit to what engineers can accomplish, ranging from designing and building roads to space stations, medical equipment, and much more. The kinds of work engineers do can vary from administration, construction, consulting, design, teaching, etc across many different fields. 2

"Engineering is different from science in that it uses natural phenomena to benefit people personally and economically; whereas scientists discover and formulate these phenomena into acceptable theories. Engineers require creative imagination and innovation. A typical engineer must have a broad, yet thorough understanding of both science and the humanities." 3

The purpose of this guide is to provide engineering resources for students and educators . It covers grade levels from early childhood education to secondary school.

Our guide provides a list of print materials from our catalog, internet websites, and subscription databases. If you need more books or materials on engineering, search for additional titles using the library's catalog or suggested Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).

About the Science Section

Part of the  Science & Business Reading Room  at the Library of Congress, the Science Section is the starting point for conducting research at the Library of Congress in the subject areas of science, medicine and engineering. Top 10 observations about being an engineer

I wish I’d known how much I had yet to learn when I began my career. Our careers are journeys through which we learn from our successes and failures. For me, this journey is now approaching 40 years. Although it’s impossible to sum it all up in just a few words, here are some highlights. For those who remember David Letterman, I offer this in the style of a Top 10 list:

10. Our fundamental charge as civil engineers is to efficiently and effectively deploy the world’s limited resources for the betterment of humankind. Be proud, as this is truly a noble calling!

9. As consulting engineers, our true deliverables are ideas and advice. Drawings, specifications, spreadsheets, and computer models are only tools of conveyance. Hone your communication skills to best convey your ideas.

8. Civil engineers are leaders by nature. Leverage your leadership skills for the betterment of your clients, projects, and team members.

7. Math and science trump opinions, folklore, and even code provisions. When in doubt, revert to first principles and seek to simplify problems.

6. Twisting the words in the building code is not creative engineering. Seek to understand the objectives of code provisions and then be creative in satisfying the objectives.

5. Collaboration, even with competitors, is key to the broad adoption of new ideas, methods, and innovations. Be bold and share.

4. Know what you believe in and stay true to your values. Don’t fall prey to herd mentality or the trend of the moment.

3. A vision can be realized through relentless pursuit, but it requires adjustments, flexibility, and course corrections along the way. Remember that innovation requires flexible tenacity.

2. Learn as much as you can, whenever you can, from whomever you can. Continual personal growth is essential to success and ongoing relevance. Be insatiably curious.

1. All the highlights of my career relate to the amazing people I have had the privilege to interact with and be inspired by. Enjoy the journey and value the relationships you form.

GATE 2025 TEST PAPERS & SYLLABUS

GATE 2025 will be conducted for 30 test papers. The following table shows the list of papers with codes. Please click the Paper/Code to download the syllabus.

A candidate is allowed to appear either in ONE or UP TO TWO test papers. Please see the page Two-Paper Combination for more details.

The test papers will be in English. Each GATE 2025 paper is for a total of 100 marks, General Aptitude (GA) is common for all papers (15 marks), and the rest of the paper covers the respective test paper syllabus (85 marks). Click here for detailed pattern of the question papers .

Multi-sessional papers: Candidate will be assigned to appear only in one of the sessions for the papers running in multiple sessions.

Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) and Civil Engineering (CE) will be conducted as multi-session papers in GATE 2025. More precisely, they will be two-session papers. This means that the candidates will be assigned to one of the sessions only — either the forenoon session or the afternoon session. The question papers will be different for each session. Test papers are held in multiple sessions when the candidate count is so high that they cannot all appear for the test in the same session. The scores of the candidates will be normalized according to the normalization formula given in Section 13.2 of the Information Brochure.

Candidates must familiarize themselves with the paper code as it is required both during application and examination.

Each candidate should fill ONLY ONE application. If they wish to appear in second paper (from the two-paper combination), they can add respective paper in their original application. In case of Multiple applications, only one will be accepted and remaining applications will be rejected without any refund for the paid fee.

Title: where are large language models for code generation on github.

Abstract: The increasing use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in software development has garnered significant attention from researchers assessing the quality of the code they generate. However, much of the research focuses on controlled datasets such as HumanEval, which fail to adequately represent how developers actually utilize LLMs' code generation capabilities or clarify the characteristics of LLM-generated code in real-world development scenarios. To bridge this gap, our study investigates the characteristics of LLM-generated code and its corresponding projects hosted on GitHub. Our findings reveal several key insights: (1) ChatGPT and Copilot are the most frequently utilized for generating code on GitHub. In contrast, there is very little code generated by other LLMs on GitHub. (2) Projects containing ChatGPT/Copilot-generated code are often small and less known, led by individuals or small teams. Despite this, most projects are continuously evolving and improving. (3) ChatGPT/Copilot is mainly utilized for generating Python, Java, and TypeScript scripts for data processing and transformation. C/C++ and JavaScript code generation focuses on algorithm and data structure implementation and user interface code. Most ChatGPT/Copilot-generated code snippets are relatively short and exhibit low complexity. (4) Compared to human-written code, ChatGPT/Copilot-generated code exists in a small proportion of projects and generally undergoes fewer modifications. Additionally, modifications due to bugs are even fewer, ranging from just 3% to 8% across different languages. (5) Most comments on ChatGPT/Copilot-generated code lack detailed information, often only stating the code's origin without mentioning prompts, human modifications, or testing status. Based on these findings, we discuss the implications for researchers and practitioners.
