As a result of scientific research, we know that addiction is a medical disorder that affects the brain and changes behavior. This study surveyed current and potential Ohio Medical Marijuana patients about whether marijuana use has reduced their use of prescription painkillers or other illicit drugs. The results indicated that a large majority of respondents agreed (77.55% agree versus 1.74% disagree) that using marijuana reduced their use of prescription painkillers. The results also indicated that far more respondents agreed, rather than disagreed, (26.78% agree versus 1.9% disagree) that marijuana use reduced their use of other illicit drugs. These results are consistent with the findings of previous research.

People use drugs because of various reasons and in different frequencies. It should be stated that there is a precise classification of types of drug use. The first type implies practical use, which is a simple curiosity of a person. The fifth type is dependent use, which refers to a situation when an individual becomes dependent on a substance after taking it for a prolonged period or in large quantities. Such an individual needs the drug regularly, as it allows him or her to feel comfortable and to avoid withdrawal syndrome. It should be noted that this type of drug use does not eliminate a possible addiction to a substance.

Not all the above-discussed reasons why people use drugs imply that those individuals become addicted to substances. However, those who fall into regular substance use usually escape some kind of psychological issues, including mental health problems, troubles at home, at work, or with other people, individual biology, or peers’ influence ( The science of drug use, 2020, para. 13). This kind of psychological reason for drug use usually requires medical attention, as it is relatively complicated to quit substances without professional help.

In conclusion, it should be noted that drug use does not become a severe issue for most people, as they take substances to have fun. However, there are some other types of substance use, as intensive and dependent categories, who face dangerous consequences of such behavior. These types are usually associated with psychological issues when a substance becomes a way to escape a particular unbearable condition for an individual.

Drug delivery is a key component of nanomedicine, and conventional delivery relies on the adsorption or encapsulation of drug molecules to a nanomaterial. Many delivery vehicles contain metal ions, such as metal–organic frameworks, metal oxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXene, and noble metal nanoparticles. These materials have a high metal content and pose potential long‑term toxicity concerns leading to difficulties for clinical approval. In this review, recent developments are summarized in the use of drug molecules as ligands for metal coordination forming various nanomaterials and soft materials. In these cases, the drug‑to‑metal ratio is much higher than conventional adsorption‑based strategies. The drug molecules are divided into small‑molecule drugs, nucleic acids, and proteins. The formed hybrid materials mainly include nanoparticles and hydrogels, upon which targeting ligands can be grafted to improve efficacy and further decrease toxicity. The application of these materials for addressing cancer, viral infection, bacterial infection inflammatory bowel disease, and bone diseases is reviewed. In the end, some future directions are discussed from fundamental research, materials science, and medicine.
