Our Environment Essay – Things To Keep In Mind

An academic essay needs to have a few essential points integrated into the body. Furthermore, an essay about the environment may sound very generic, but students should link it with other related concepts from their syllabus. Adopting this method will ensure that the essay will stay relevant and on point. The following are a few other points to keep in mind if students wish to write an essay on environment.

  • Limit the use of jargon; unless the topic is exclusively technical.
  • If time permits, prepare an outline of the essay.
  • Include an introductory paragraph.
  • Break up the body of the essay into digestible paragraphs.
  • Incorporate a concluding paragraph summarizing the points.
  • Try to incorporate dates, place names, and other specifics.
  • Always write in the third person, that is, refrain from using words such as “Me,” “I.”
  • Avoid colloquial terms, broken syntax, and slang.
  • Always use formal writing. For example, replacing words such as “but” with “however,” or “moreover,” will make the essay sound more professional.
  • If possible, use points to state views, opinions, or other highlights.

Sample 1 – Essay on Our Environment Pollution (Primary School Level)

Environment Essay Writing: The natural environment consists of two major components: living and non-living things. The living components, as the name implies, include all lifeforms on earth, from microscopic microbes to gargantuan blue whales. Non-living components of the environment include all the spheres of the earth, (such as hydrosphere and lithosphere), physical, chemical, and other natural forces.

The interaction between these components is crucial for life. However, anthropological activities have affected the dynamics, resulting in an imbalance. For instance, the greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon that has been around for millions of years. It is also a crucial process necessary for sustaining life on earth. However, since the Industrial Revolution, the levels of air pollution skyrocketed, pumping tremendous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

This magnified the greenhouse effect, eventually leading to global warming. And the consequences have been dire, for instance, the rising sea level is expected to submerge most cities near the coast by 2050. Torrential floods and storms will increase in their intensity. Draughts will be more severe and induce constant famine. Hence, anthropological activities must be kept under check because environmental pollution can take atoll on the planet and ourselves.  E-District Scholarship .

Sample 2 – Environmental Pollution – Radiation and its Effects on the Environment Essay (Higher Secondary/College Level)

There are various kinds of pollution in the environment, all arising from anthropological activities. These include air, water, soil, noise, and light pollution. Radioactive pollution is another type of pollution which is incredibly rare, but more dangerous than almost all other types of pollution.

Radioactive pollution occurs when the environment and the organisms living within are exposed to high energy ionizing radiation. These ionizing radiations carry tremendous amounts of energy, which can damage the DNA of living tissues. Once the DNA gets damaged, the living tissue is unable to repair itself and is more prone to mutations – which can cause uncontrolled cell growth – cancer.

As stated before, radiation pollution is quite rare. The last major incident was at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011. A tsunami and an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 Mw damaged the powerplant, leading to a core meltdown.  This disaster was a Level 7 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES). This means the severity was on par with the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident which occurred decades before.

Apart from the extensive damage to the infrastructure, health issues were starting to arise. In 2012, screening tests were done on the children of Fukushima Prefecture. Around 36% of the children exhibited abnormal growths in their thyroid gland. By 2013, the number of people diagnosed with thyroid cancer and other forms of cancer had risen drastically.

In conclusion, such incidents can be prevented if proper care and safety measures were implemented. A seawall of adequate high could have prevented the tsunami. The Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, which was closer to the epicenter of the earthquake, successfully withstood the tsunami and averted the disaster, which affected the Fukushima power plant.

Sample 3 – Save Environment Essay (General/All audience)

The environment is where all living organisms, including humans, reside. Hence, it is important to take care of the environment. Moreover, the environment provides many resources essential to life. For instance, life on earth would not be possible without oxygen, and plants are the main producers of oxygen. Hence, we need to save trees by preventing deforestation.

Water is another essential resource for life. About 71% of the earth’s surface is covered with water; however, just 1% of that is usable freshwater. Hence, conservation of water is important. It helps to reduce the energy required to process and deliver water.

Another important aspect of the environment is the food web. A food web is a group of interconnected food chains found in the environment. If any organism on the food chain becomes extinct, the whole food web can become imbalanced and collapse. For instance, the population of an apex predator in an ecosystem may become extinct as a result of human activities. Then the prey population will exponentially rise as there is no natural predator to keep it in check.

Sometimes, these scenarios can affect humans too: If snakes are eliminated from a particular ecosystem, then, the rat population in that ecosystem will rise. This can have undesired consequences on the ecosystem as well as humans. It could lead to a rise in diseases, destruction of crops or stored grains, or wiping out other native organisms in the environment.

The environment is the key to the existence of life on earth, and thus kids need to know about its importance as they are the future pillars of the world. Here we present 10 lines on environment essay for class 1 and 2 kids.

  • The environment is a gift that needs a lot of nurturing.
  • The environment is the surrounding in which we live.
  • It consists of both biotic and abiotic elements.
  • A clean environment is essential for the peaceful and healthy survival of humans.
  • Human activities negatively affect the environment. It includes pollution, global warming, extinction of species, etc.
  • Government and citizens alike should take steps to protect our environment.
  • We must spread the message on the importance of the environment to everyone.
  • More trees must be planted to balance the ecosystem.
  • The usage of plastic bags that harm the environment must be stopped.
  • The use of recycled products must be promoted.

Every species on this planet is dependent on the environment. We, humans, are also a part of it, and our primary responsibility is to protect the environment and teach future generations. The following short paragraph on the environment will guide kids to write an effective essay:

The environment plays a vital role in the existence of life. It consists of plants, animals, food, natural resources, water, and so on. Ancient humans lived in a natural environment and hence led a healthy life. But in recent times, the environment has been highly harmed due to human selfishness and greed. If this continues, it may endanger human existence. Thus every citizen must protect our environment. There are plenty of little things to do daily to help preserve our environment, such as using public transport instead of private ones to control pollution, preserving natural resources, using eco-friendly products and services, planting more trees, etc.

All life on earth is dependent on the environment for its survival and basic needs. We utilise all the resources provided by nature and benefit from them but fail to protect the same. Given below is a short essay for class 1, 2 and 3 students about the environment:

Mother Earth is the home of many living creatures. But we are destroying it little by little due to mindless behaviour. To prevent further damage, we must control pollution, preserve natural resources, plant more trees and reduce the use of harmful chemicals and plastics. To create awareness about this, ‘World Environment Day’ is celebrated every year on June 5. We must never forget that it is an individual and a collective responsibility to preserve our environment so that we and our future generation can lead a happy and healthy life. There are so many ways we can contribute to saving our environment. We can use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. We can opt for public transport than using our private vehicle to cover short and long distances. Planting more trees and mindfully availing of natural resources are steps towards a sustainable environment. Our thinking today will secure the future for upcoming generations.

“Nature is the art of God”. But the need to protect it is vital now. In this article, let’s learn about the significance of the environment and explore what we can write in an essay for class 3 about this topic. Here is a descriptive essay about the environment:

What Is The Environment?

Everything surrounding us comes within the scope of the environment. It includes biotic and abiotic elements, which together help maintain ecological balance and make human survival possible.

Significance of Environment

  • Warehouse of natural resources:  The environment provides us with all the necessary resources to carry on our day-to-day routine. It is a life support system for all living beings.
  • Medium of livelihood:  The livelihood of billions of people depends on the environment. Most of them are engaged in agriculture to earn income; others rely on different water bodies.
  • Provide food:  The environment provides food, one of the basic necessities of life.
  • Provide medicine:  Nature is a rich source of medicine. In ancient times, people got treatment mostly from plants. More than one-third (39.1%) of all FDA-approved drugs are of natural origin. Many scientific studies also reveal that spending time in nature can increase one’s lifespan.

Major Causes Of Environmental Degradation

Environmental degradation refers to the depletion of natural resources and the ecosystem, and it can happen due to two causes – natural and manmade. Natural causes are beyond our control. But we can prevent human causes. Pollution is mainly caused by exhaust gas emitted from factories and vehicles. Due to the industrial boom, a demand-supply imbalance of environmental resources is there. Human’s surge in urbanisation and increased demand for wood has led to rapid deforestation. It further leads to an imbalance of oxygen and CO2 in the atmosphere. Excessive generation of non-biodegradable waste and increased use of chemical pesticides have led to degradation of land quality and soil erosion.

Measures To Protect The Environment

Following are the simple steps to safeguard our environment:

  • Planting trees is one of the most popular and effective methods to preserve the environment.
  • Minimise water use by reducing bath time, recycling, etc.
  • Conserve electricity by switching off electrical appliances while not in use. Use energy-saving appliances.
  • Consider using eco-friendly products.
  • Environmental education and awareness must be given top priority.

Apart from assisting you in writing your essay, this article will help your children understand how precious their environment is and ways to safeguard it. Mother Earth has provided us with enormous benefits, and we must protect our environment.

From the above points, it is clear that the natural environment is a treasure to humanity. But due to our irresponsible actions, we are continuously harming nature without knowing its consequences. Thus we must learn to respect and protect the environment before it is too late. Change must begin from us by setting a positive example for our future generation to follow and enjoy the innumerable benefits of nature.

“A better environment ensures a better tomorrow.”

Short Essay on Save Environment – Essay 1 (200 words)

A geographical area or the natural world that includes mineral soil, air and water, animals, etc., affected by human activity is called the environment. With the movement of the Homo sapiens towards urbanization and industrialization, which led to the environment and development of medical, industrial and societal fields, the natural landscape got replaced by concrete buildings and roads. However, our dependency on these natural landscapes for food, water for drinking and agriculture, fueling wood, etc., persists. Our dependency on nature is so large that we cannot survive without protecting its resources.

These natural resources can broadly be categorized into renewable and non-renewable ones. Renewable resources are the ones that can be regenerated naturally. These include water, forest, crops etc. On the contrary, non-renewable resources such as oils and minerals cannot be replenished and, in the present scenario, are being consumed quickly.

The main factors leading to this rapid depletion of all natural resources are population growth and ‘consumerism’ on the part of the privileged sections of society.

This has led to the loss of not only wildlife and trees but has also disrupted the ecosystem. Thus, it is high time we stop misusing these natural resources and use them judiciously.

On the Importance of Saving Our Environment – Essay 2 (300 words)

The sum of all the surroundings of a living being, including air, water, sunlight, etc. and the living organism like animals, plants, humans, etc., that provide sustainable conditions for growth and development constitutes the environment.

Importance of Saving Our Environment

Today in the industrial and urban sectors, this environment comprises well-paved roads, multi-story concrete buildings and skyscrapers. Their main motive is to accommodate the increasing population and provide various luxuries to the affluent sections of society.

However, despite this movement, the reliability of humans on the resources derived from nature persists. We use air for breathing, water for drinking and other daily chores.

Essay on How to Protect and Save Environment – Essay 3 (400 words)

Since the beginning, the environment has helped us establish a relationship with flora and fauna and ultimately determined our formation and survival. It has given us various gifts, e.g. water, sunlight, air, creatures and fossil fuels which have made our planet worth living on.

How to Protect and Save the Environment

  • Forest Resources: Forests play a vital role in preventing soil erosion and reducing the effects of drought as they prevent rainwater from running from the ground. Moreover, they not only keep the climatic conditions under control but also maintain carbon dioxide levels for living organisms.
  • Food Resources: The various technologies used during the green revolution that helped reduce starvation by booming crop production, in actuality, degraded the quality of the soil.

Essay on Save Environment Save Earth – Essay 4 (500 words)

“No generation has a freehold on this Earth. Despite various gifts we have been provided by nature to make our life seem easy and this planet worth living, such as air, sunlight, water, animals and minerals, we have overtly exploited them for our selfish gains.

Need to Save Environment to Save Earth

To meet our present-day needs due to increasing population levels, we have been persistent without any check consuming natural resources. We are not concerned for our future generations. Thus, the need of the hour is to conserve both the renewable and non-renewable resources provided by nature if we need to save mother Earth.

Effects of Pollution on the Environment

  • Air Pollution: The development of transportation systems and large-scale use of petrol and diesel has accelerated the production of both undesirable solid and gaseous particles in the air in quantities that are harmful to the environment. With the increase in carbon monoxide, chloro-fluoro-carbons, sulphur oxides, hydrocarbons, and even lead, the ozone layer responsible for protection from ultraviolet rays has started depleting. This has also increased temperatures, commonly known as ‘global warming’.
  • Water Pollution: Untreated human and animal wastes, suspension of water-soluble inorganic chemicals from industries such as mercury and lead and draining of organic chemicals, including detergent and oils, in the freshwater ponds and rivers has made their water unfit for any use. This has adversely affected aquatic life, reduced crop yields, and made the water unsafe for consumption by humans and animals.
  • Soil Pollution: Due to the excessive spraying of fertilizers and pesticides like DDT, the use of irrigation water that is high in salts to increase crop yields, in the long run, renders land useless.
  • Noise Pollution: Noise emanating from vehicles, factories and especially the bursting of crackers during Diwali in India contributes to noise pollution. This adversely affects the animals as they cannot adapt to such noises and, in turn, undergo hearing loss.

Every individual must solely contribute towards conserving the environment and not majorly depend on the government itself. Knowingly or unknowingly, we contribute towards environment pollution daily. Hence, as the consumers of the gifts of nature, it is our responsibility to promote rainwater harvesting, take part both individually and collectively in recycling products, and avoid the wastage of resources such as electricity and fresh water, etc. By taking little steps, we can effectively improve the health of our ailing planet.

Essay on Save Environment Save Life – Essay 5 (600 words)

The gifts provided by the natural environment are bliss for humanity as well as for other living organisms. These natural resources, including air, sunlight, fresh water, fossil fuels and many more are so vital that life can never be possible without them. This, rather than ‘economic development’, is proving to be more hazardous for human health, as discussed below.

Reasons to Save the Environment to Save Life on Earth

Following are the points describing pollution due to the Misuse and Wastage of natural resources and their effects on the life of living beings on the Earth. Thus we must save our environment to save life on Earth:

  • Air Pollution: The increase in the use of petrol and diesel for transportation and the burning of fossil fuels in industries to produce energy make a terrible contribution to polluting the air. This increases sulphur oxides, hydrocarbons, chloro-fluoro-carbons, carbon monoxide, etc. These hazardous gases negatively affect human health , causing chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases. Also, causing the depletion of the ozone layer, making humanity vulnerable to ultraviolet rays, air pollution accelerates ‘global warming’ and weakens the immune system.
  • Water Pollution: The suspension of water-soluble inorganic chemicals from industries, the release of untreated human and animal wastes in fresh water, and the draining of fertilizers and pesticides during river irrigation lead to water pollution. This makes the water unfit for drinking, such that its consumption causes gastrointestinal diseases but also causes cancer. Moreover, by affecting aquatic life negatively, water pollution makes fish unfit for consumption.
  • Soil Pollution: Using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in soil kills bad and good pests, thereby providing us with less nutritious crops. Also, exposure to chemical-infected crops due to soil pollution over several years causes mutations, cancer, etc. Soil erosion caused due to excessive deforestation and construction aids in the frequency of floods, which results in the destruction of human life on a massive scale.
  • Noise Pollution: Excessive noise emanating from factories and vehicles can cause physical damage to the ear, resulting in temporary or permanent hearing loss. Amongst Homo sapiens, noise pollution also hurts mental, emotional and psychological health, causing stress, anxiety and irritability, thereby adversely affecting performance at work.

Methods for Saving the Environment

We, as the youth of today, can take small steps to save our natural environment similarly:

  • We should promote and also apply the concept of reducing. I.e. reduce, recycle and reuse to prevent the excessive use of non-renewable resources.
  • Use energy-efficient tube lights and bulbs that save energy.
  • Reduce the use of paper and wood products wherever possible and go for e-books and e-paper.
  • Reduce the use of fossil fuels by opting to walk, carpool, or use public transport.
  • Use jute/cloth bags instead of plastic bags.
  • Use rechargeable batteries/ solar panels.
  • I am setting up a compost bin to produce manure to reduce the use of fertilizers.

This may be improved agriculture, more river valley projects, more factories, more houses, more education or better health services. Our resources are limited and the most that we may hope to save has been indicated in the plan. Because of this limitation of resources, we have to make hard choices at every step and priorities become important.’’
