Continuing Competence

APTA compiled resources to assist physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students when seeking opportunities for maintaining and expanding their knowledge and skills.

In 2022 the House of Delegates adopted RC19-22: Charge: Evaluation of continuing clinical competence requirements.

Charge: That the American Physical Therapy Association, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, evaluate continuing competence requirements as the preferred method for maintenance of licensure and develop recommendations for a uniform evaluation process of educational and professional activities that could be implemented by components and jurisdictions.

Continuing Competence is the ongoing possession and application of contemporary knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with an individual’s (physical therapist or physical therapist assistant) role within the context of public health, welfare, and safety and defined by a scope of practice and practice setting. The following resources were identified and compiled to assist physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students when seeking opportunities for maintaining and expanding knowledge and skills.

It is important to realize that uniform adoption by APTA components and enforcement of any standards for best practices in physical therapy continuing education courses is challenging. Also, licensing agencies, such as state boards, must follow statutes in their jurisdiction that are legislatively determined, which may put boundaries on their ability to adopt such standards. However, access to easily available resources for assessment of quality continuing education courses used by APTA and the APTA Learning Center could facilitate wider implementation by APTA components and State Boards.

CORA Physical Therapy

The Role of Continuing Education in Concussion Management

Jul 15 2024 | Adam Goodrich

Continuing Education for concussion management

This post delves into why continuing education in concussion management is essential, guided by insights from experts Bryan Anderson, Director of Sports Medicine at CORA Physical Therapy, and Ashley Langford, Director of Clinical Excellence at CORA Physical Therapy, from an insightful discussion posted to YouTube.

Concussions, often seen as just bumps on the head by many, can have far-reaching impacts beyond the initial injury.

Understanding these effects and the necessary steps for effective treatment of concussions are crucial, not just for medical professionals but for everyone.

Introduction to Concussion Prevalence and Impact

Concussions are not just common in sports but in everyday activities, making them a prevalent concern. The injury has undergone a significant transformation in recognition over the past decade.

Initially under-recognized, their serious nature is now more acknowledged, reflecting their profound impact on people’s lives.

This shift underscores the need for continuous learning and adaptation in medical practice, especially as our understanding of concussions evolves.

The Journey of a Concussion Patient

The path to concussion recovery often starts unassumingly. Many individuals do not realize they’ve sustained a concussion. This can delay treatment and exacerbate symptoms.

The discussion between Ashley and Bryan highlights the often-subtle onset of symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • Vision problems
  • Balance issues

These symptoms are often dismissed until they become undeniable.

This aspect emphasizes the need for education on recognizing these early signs both among patients and healthcare providers.

The Crucial Role of Clinicians in Concussion Management

From a clinician’s perspective, continuing education is vital in ensuring they are equipped to handle concussion cases.

In the video, Brian and Ashley discuss the importance of being able to conduct thorough evaluations and recognize symptoms that might be mistaken for less serious conditions.

As concussions can mimic or coincide with other injuries, a well-informed clinician can be the difference between swift recovery and prolonged suffering.

Continuing Education in Concussion Management: Enhancing Skills and Knowledge

The necessity of continuous education in concussion management becomes clear when considering the complexity of concussion symptoms and their treatment. Clinicians must stay updated on the latest diagnostic techniques and treatment protocols to provide the best care possible.

As Brian mentions, even though concussion treatment integrates general medical knowledge, specific training in concussion management can significantly enhance a clinician’s effectiveness.

Challenges and Opportunities in Concussion Education

Despite advancements, challenges remain in concussion education.

Many clinicians enter the field with varying levels of preparedness to manage concussions, which can lead to inconsistencies in patient care.

Ongoing training and resources, such as those provided by professional organizations and health institutes, are crucial for standardizing the quality of care.

Additionally, as technology and medical understanding evolve, so too must the educational resources available to healthcare professionals.

The Future of Concussion Education

Looking ahead, the integration of technology and interdisciplinary approaches could greatly enhance concussion education and treatment.

Innovations in virtual learning, simulation-based training, and collaborative platforms could provide clinicians with more dynamic and accessible learning experiences.

Furthermore, public education campaigns could help with concussion awareness for the general population. Promoting earlier diagnosis and treatment could mean better outcomes.

Conclusion: A Call to Action for Continuing Education in Concussion Management

The discussion wraps up with a call to action for all involved in concussion care—from clinicians to educators, and even patients themselves—to engage in lifelong learning.

The dynamic nature of concussion science demands continuous education to ensure that everyone affected by concussions receives the most informed and effective care possible.

“Not only do our physical and occupational therapists who work with our orthopedic patients have the skill and knowledge base to do what is best for the patient, they are passionate and compassionate about what they do and they want to make sure that those patients are cared for as best as they can,” Director of Therapy Solutions Justin Minden said. “You will not find better care anywhere else in the region. We provide incredible care that will make sure you have the best possible outcome.”

Our Team The overall success of your orthopedic procedure is often dependent on what you do during your post-surgery period and having the right physical and occupational therapist makes a significant difference in your path to recovery. Our therapists have an average of nearly two decades of professional experience and every year our team completes extensive continuing education to ensure they are up to date in the latest technology, procedures and recommendations.

“One of the most rewarding things with orthopedic patients is that we can help them return to their functional activities that they love to do, whether it be getting back with family, recreational activities, sports or even returning to work,” Physical Therapist Shirley Rencken said. Rencken specializes in the care of patients who are preparing for or recovering from orthopedic surgeries at Gritman. “It just makes me feel good when I see a patient who was hobbling with a walker and then a few weeks later they are going up and down stairs, walking on gravel and other uneven surfaces, and they don’t have pain.”

Two of our physical therapists – Cliff Knelsen and Stephen Barbuto – have obtained an Orthopaedic Specialists Certification, through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties . This is the highest level of certification for physical therapists.

Education Our Total Joint Replacement classes are designed for people considering or planning a total joint replacement. Taught by experts who can answer all of your questions, we will get you on your way to living a healthier and more vibrant life with less pain.

Attendees have access to our leading therapists who will offer tips and advice to ensure the best possible recovery. The classes touch on pre- and post-surgery exercises and instruction, nutritional counseling, home preparation and a daily breakdown of what to expect during your stay at the hospital.

Facilities Not only do our patients have the top surgeons and therapists in the region guiding them on their path to recovery, when you have surgery at Gritman you will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities.

Dedicated Inpatient Therapy Gym – Our inpatient therapy gym is a space dedicated solely to your recovery from your total joint replacement. We have the equipment and space to focus on you and your recovery in a private secure setting – all located down the hall from your recovery room.

HydroWorx Therapy Pool – Gritman Therapy Solutions has the most advanced therapy pool in the region. The HydroWorx 2000 therapy pool has a variable depth platform that allows patients to step directly onto the platform and be lowered into the pool to avoid the need for stairs or lifts. It also has an 8-by-12 foot underwater treadmill, resistance jets and a camera system to allow patients to see how their body moves under water. At 90 degrees, our therapy pool allows patients with all abilities to perform better.
