Kylian Mbappé at the 2022 World Cup

Recent News

Kylian Mbappé (born December 20, 1998, Paris , France) is a French football (soccer) player whose speed and goal scoring as an attacker have made him a dominant force in European club competition. In 2022 he became the first player in football history to have scored four career goals in World Cup finals.

Kylian Mbappé was born in Paris and grew up in Bondy, one of the Parisian suburbs (banlieues) with working-class, mostly immigrant residents. His mother, Fayza Lamari, is of Algerian descent, and his father, Wilfried Mbappé, had immigrated from Cameroon. Wilfried Mbappé was a coach and director for the local club AS Bondy, and his son joined the club’s youth teams at age six.

Kylian Mbappé quickly became known for his exceptional speed and ball handling, and, several years later, he was selected to train at Clairefontaine, France’s national academy for elite football players. He spent two years there, and a number of notable European clubs—among them Real Madrid , Arsenal , Chelsea , and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)—expressed an interest in signing him.

In 2013, at age 14, he signed with AS Monaco, which competes in Ligue 1 (France’s top-division league), and he played on the club’s youth and under-19 teams.

When Mbappé made his debut with AS Monaco’s first team—on December 2, 2015—he was just a few weeks shy of his 17th birthday. He was at that time the youngest first-team player in the club’s history. ( Thierry Henry had previously been the youngest.) Mbappé scored only one goal and saw limited playing time during the 2015–16 season.

In 2016–17, however, he scored 15 goals, which tied him for fifth among Ligue 1 players, and AS Monaco captured the Ligue 1 title. Powered by Mbappé and teammate Radamel Falcao, the team defeated Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund in knockout matches as it advanced to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League semifinals, where it lost to Juventus .

In August 2017 Mbappé moved to PSG, which also signed Neymar , a prolific Brazilian scorer. Together they led PSG to three consecutive Ligue 1 titles (2017–18, 2018–19, and 2019–20). Mbappé was named the league’s Player of the Year for the 2018–19 season, when he scored 33 goals, the most in Ligue 1. He led the league in goals in each of the next three seasons, and he again earned league Player of the Year honors in 2020–21, and 2021–22.

In 2021 PSG signed Lionel Messi , another of the world’s best football players, and the team, now featuring one of the most talented front lines in the history of the sport, won the Ligue 1 title in 2021–22. Mbappé subsequently agreed to a new contract that could, via an extension clause, keep him at PSG through 2025. The contract also, reportedly, made him the world’s highest-paid football player. In 2022−23, for the fifth season in a row, Mbappé led Ligue 1 in goals scored, and he was again named league Player of the Year; PSG also won another Ligue 1 championship. The 2023–24 season saw PSG win Ligue 1 again and Mbappé receive Player of the Year honors again—the team’s third consecutive title and Mbappé’s fifth consecutive win.

It was widely reported in February 2024 that Mbappé had informed PSG that he would not exercise his contract’s extension clause and thus intended to leave the club after the 2023–24 season. In May 2024 Mbappé said on social media he would be leaving PSG, and in June 2024 Real Madrid officially announced he would be joining that club.

In 2016 at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, Mbappé led France’s national team to victory. He played his first match with the French men’s national team in 2017, and he soon emerged as one of its main scoring threats. During the 2018 World Cup he became—at age 19—the youngest French player ever to score in World Cup competition. His goal gave France a 1–0 group-stage victory over Peru, and the French team advanced to the knockout stages of the tournament, where it eventually defeated Croatia 4–2 in the tournament’s final. Mbappé scored the last of his team’s goals, becoming the second teenager to score in a World Cup final. ( Pelé was the first, in 1958.) Mbappé received the World Cup’s Best Young Player award for his performance, which included scoring four goals.

In 2021 Mbappé scored the winning goal for France in the final of the UEFA Nations League tournament, defeating Spain. At the 2022 World Cup he scored eight goals in seven matches—the most of any player in the tournament, which won him the Golden Boot award. In the tournament final, Mbappé scored three goals and twice brought the French team from behind to tie Argentina, which was led by his PSG teammate Messi, but France ultimately lost on penalty kicks. With his three goals, Mbappé became the first player in history to have tallied four career World Cup final goals.

Mbappé’s success in international play for France made him a star in his home country, particularly in the banlieues where he grew up. When asked in a 2021 interview with Esquire magazine about what it means to be a “French icon,” he said,

I’ve always felt French. I don’t renounce my origins, because they are part of who I am, but I’ve made my whole life in France, and never at any moment was I made to feel I wasn’t at home here.

But in the wake of the French team’s lackluster performance in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup, Mbappé was subjected to racist abuse that, according to a 2022 interview with Sports Illustrated , made him consider leaving the team. In the end, he decided to stay:

But after, I take the reflection with all the people who play around me and root for me, and I think it was not the good message to give up. Because I think I’m an example for everybody.…This is the new France.…It’s for that, that I didn’t give up the national team. Because it is a message to the young generation to say, ‘We are stronger than that.’

Kylian MBAPPÉ

France

" Liberté, Égalité, Mbappé ." Few athletes have managed to capture the hearts and imaginations of a nation as Kylian Mbappé has done for France. In fact, many fans have playfully re-branded the country's slogan to emphasise their love for their brightest star.

Kylian Mbappé was born in Bondy, a suburb of Paris, in December 1998 to Wilfried Mbappé , a football coach of Cameroonian origin, and Fayza Lamari , a professional handball player of Algerian descent.

Kylian's footballing talent was evident from a very young age, and he quickly gained a reputation as a prodigious young talent. Mbappé began his career with the local club AS Bondy before making a move to Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2013. There, he made his professional debut at the young age of 16 .

The Frenchman swiftly made a mark with the southern French club. His lightning-quick pace (he has been measured as fast as 38 km/h) and goal-scoring ability played a pivotal role in Monaco's unlikely Ligue 1 title triumph in 2017 and their journey to the UEFA Champions League semifinals .

Kylian Mbappe's Rise to Stardom at PSG

In August 2017, Mbappé attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Real Madrid. However, he opted to join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on an initial loan deal, which later became a permanent transfer for a reported fee of €180 million , making him the second most expensive player in the history of the sport.

At PSG, the striker continued to excel and break records. He earned multiple Ligue 1 Player of the Year awards and became the club's all-time leading goal-scorer , surpassing legends like Zlatan Ibrahimovic , Edinson Cavani , and Pedro Pauleta .

In the summer of 2022, as Mbappé's contract with PSG neared its expiration, he came close to joining European giants Real Madrid . However, in the closing days of the transfer window, he pledged his future to PSG and signed a new contract, reaffirming his connection with the French fans.

"I am convinced that here I can continue to grow within a club that gives itself all the means to perform at the highest level. I am also very happy to be able to continue to evolve in France, the country where I was born, grew up, and flourished," he remarked upon signing the new contract.

The love affair with the French public faced major upheaval in the summer of 2023 when PSG listed Mbappé on the transfer market, a year before his contract was set to expire. The striker trained separately from the first team as interest from Saudi Arabia emerged.

However, the 24-year-old declined to entertain the Middle East offers and could remain in the French capital until the end of his contract in the summer of 2024.

Shining with the French national team

In addition to his impressive club career in the French league, the 1.78m striker has shone for the national team since his debut in March 2017 at 18. He played a crucial role in guiding France to victory in the 2018 FIFA World Cup , scoring four goals during the tournament, including one in the final against Croatia. His performances earned him the FIFA World Cup Best Young Player Award .

The French ace played a pivotal role in his team's quest to retain the World Cup in the winter of 2022 in Qatar, only narrowly falling short in the final against Lionel Messi's Argentina. Mbappé scored three goals in the final, earning him the Golden Boot Award after finishing as the tournament's top scorer with eight goals.

Appointed French national team captain in 2023, he may be on the brink of participating in the Paris Olympics in his hometown, a tournament he has always dreamed of being a part of.

"It was when I watched the Olympic Games in London 2012 that I realised the importance of this global event. The Games are 'THE' reference in sports, the absolute Holy Grail that every athlete aspires to compete in and experience at least once in their lifetime," he expressed in an October 2021 interview with L'Equipe newspaper.

The talented 25-year-old attacker began his youth career at AS Bondy before joining the youth set-up at AS Monaco in 2013.

He made his first-team debut for AS Monaco in December 2015 and enjoyed a breakthrough spell with the French club.

After helping Monaco to win the Ligue 1 title in the 2016-17 campaign, Mbappe ended up joining Paris Saint-Germain in August 2017 in an initial loan deal.

His switch to PSG was made permanent in 2018 and he quickly established himself as a regular fixture in the first-team at the French club.

Mbappe represented France at various youth levels and made his senior debut for the international team in 2017. He was part of the France team who won the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

So, what do we know about Mbappe’s journey to becoming the talented footballer he is today? This is his story.

Early Life, Parents And Upbringing

Kylian Mbappe (full name: Kylian Mbappe Lottin) was born on 20 December 1998 in Paris, France. Mbappe was raised in Bondy, Seine-Saint-Denis, which is a commune not far from the centre of Paris.

Mbappe’s father, Wilfrid, is originally from Cameroon, and his mother, Fayza Lamari, is Algerian. Kylian has a younger brother named Ethan, who is also a footballer.

As a youngster, Mbappe has revealed that he looked up to Cristiano Ronaldo as one of his main footballing idols. “Cristiano was my idol when I was young and it was great to meet him when I went to [Real’s training ground] Valdebebas. I adored him when I was young,” said Mbappe in December 2017.

Youth Career

Mbappe started his youth career at AS Bondy, where he was coached by his father Wilfrid.

Antonio Riccardi, an under-13s coach at AS Bondy at the time, explained that Kylian’s talent was evident from the outset.

“His father is like my second father so I knew Kylian as a baby but the first time I coached him was when he was six years old,” Riccardi told BBC Sport in 2018. “Just a few months after he had started playing here for the debutants age group you could tell he was different.

“Kylian could do much more than the other children. His dribbling was already fantastic and he was much faster than the others.”

Mbappe was at the famous Clairefontaine academy between the age of 12 and 15 but initially continued to play for AS Bondy.

He was scouted by a number of top European clubs, with Real Madrid having invited him to train with their under-12s and visit the club’s facilities when he was just 11 years old.

However, he eventually ended up deciding to move to AS Monaco, with the youngster joining the club’s youth set-up in the summer of 2013.

After having initially been brought in to Monaco’s B-Team set-up, Mbappe was quickly promoted to the first team following his impressive performances.

He made his first-team debut for Monaco on 2 December 2015 as a late substitute in a 1–1 Ligue 1 home draw against Caen. His appearance made him Monaco’s youngest-ever first team player, aged 16 years and 347 days and beating the record previously held by Thierry Henry.

Kylian scored his first goal for Monaco on 20 February 2016, netting late in a home 3–1 league win over Troyes. Aged 17 years and 62 days, he became the club’s youngest first team goal-scorer.

Following his impressive displays, Mbappe was rewarded when he signed his first professional contract with AS Monaco on 6 March 2016. The deal was initially set to run until the summer of 2019.

“I’m very happy and very proud to sign my first professional contract AS Monaco,” Mbappe said at the time. “This is the club that has helped me grow, I feel good here and I’m going to be able to continue taking new steps forward.”

The 2016-17 campaign was a breakthrough season for Mbappe as he established himself as a regular fixture in the first team at Monaco. He scored 15 goals in 29 league games to help Monaco win the Ligue 1 title. In total, Mbappe netted 26 goals in 44 games in all competitions that season.

Mbappe scored a total of 27 goals in 60 games for Monaco’s first team before a move to Paris beckoned.

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain completed a deal to sign Mbappe from AS Monaco on 31 August 2017, initially on loan and with an option to make the move permanent for a fee of €180m (£165.7m). He was handed the number 29 shirt.

“It is with great joy and pride that I join Paris Saint-Germain,” Mbappe said as the transfer was announced. “For any young person from the Paris region, it is often a dream to wear the red and blue jersey and experience the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes.

“I really wanted to be a part of the club’s project, which is one of the most ambitious in Europe.”

Mbappe scored on his first-team debut for Paris Saint-Germain on 8 September 2017, when he netted in a 5-1 away Ligue 1 win at Metz. He also laid on an assist for Edinson Cavani during the game.

He went on to score 13 goals in 27 league games as he helped PSG to win the Ligue 1 title.

His transfer to PSG was made permanent in the summer of 2018, with the club triggering the clause to complete the transfer – worth €180m plus bonuses – in February 2018.

Mbappe continued to impress in front of goal at PSG in the seasons that followed, netting more than 100 goals in 207 games in all competitions for the French side. PSG lifted the Ligue 1 trophy in in 2018-19 and 2019-20. They also won the Coupe de France in 2017–18, 2019–20 and 2020–21.

International Career

Mbappe represented France at various youth levels, including the Under-17s and Under-19s.

He made his senior debut for the French national team on 25 March 2017, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 3-1 away win over Luxembourg in World Cup qualifying.

Mbappe scored his first goal for France on 31 August 2017, netting the final goal in a 4-0 home victory over The Netherlands in World Cup qualifying.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Mbappe scored four goals to help France win the title. He won the Fifa World Cup Best Young Player Award following his fine displays.

Sponsorships And Endorsements

Mbappe has a sponsorship deal with sportswear brand Nike. He is also a global ambassador for Swiss watchmaker Hublot.

In March 2022, Mbappe was photographed by multidisciplinary creative director Ezra Petronio as part of a marketing campaign for Hublot.

Net Worth, Wages And Salary

Although there is no official figure for Kylian Mbappe’s net worth, several media outlets have attempted to estimate the number.

British newspaper, The Daily Mirror , estimated that Mbappe’s net worth stood at around $95m (£72m) in December 2021.

Meanwhile, Forbes reported in April 2021 that Mbappe pockets yearly earnings of $40m, with $26m of that coming from his salary and $14m from sponsorships and endorsements.

The Daily Star reported that Mbappe earned a salary of £410,000 per week at PSG in January 2022.

Life Away From The Pitch

Speaking in an interview with Time magazine in 2018, Mbappe opened up about how his life had changed since being catapulted into the spotlight thanks to his footballing talent.

“My life has been totally turned upside down,” said Mbappe in 2018 . “I am happy, and I am living the life I always dreamed of. I think I might have missed out on something. I did not have the moments of so-called normal people during adolescence, like going out with friends, enjoying good times.”

At the time of writing, Mbappe had more than 68 million followers on Instagram.

What Have Others Said?

Arsene Wenger, speaking about Mbappe in February 2017: “Mbappe has similarities to Thierry Henry. He has a huge talent. But of course, after that, what makes the career after is the mental aspect that Thierry had. This young boy has to show that he has similar qualities on the mental front that Thierry had.”

Kylian Mbappe with Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry, speaking about Mbappe in March 2017: “I don’t like comparing players – Mbappe has to become Mbappe and that is all. But my word, he is good. Ooh la la. l really like watching him play.”

England legend Gary Lineker, speaking about Mbappe in the summer of 2021: “Mbappe is already a global superstar who is most likely to jump in the shoes of Cristiano Ronaldo, but not Lionel Messi – he can do things that others simply can’t.

“Talent-wise, there’s no question. It’s more about whether he has the same drive to sustain his career over 17, 19 years like the two of them (Ronaldo and Messi). It’s quite remarkable and it takes something special to do that.”

Introduction

(born 1998). French soccer (association football) player Kylian Mbappé helped lead France’s national team to the 2018 World Cup title. Four years later the star forward guided France to a runners-up finish at the World Cup and won the Golden Boot award as the tournament’s top scorer. Mbappé was also known for his standout play for European professional clubs.

Early Years

Kylian Mbappé Lottin was born on December 20, 1998, in Paris, France. His father was an immigrant from Cameroon. His mother was of Algerian descent. Mbappé grew up in the Parisian suburb of Bondy, where he was introduced to soccer at an early age. His father was a coach and director for the local club AS Bondy, and Mbappé competed on the club’s youth teams from the time he was six years old. His exceptional speed and dribbling skills set him apart from the other players.

Mbappé was eventually invited to train at the Clairefontaine institute, a national center for the development of elite soccer players. He spent several years at Clairefontaine. A number of prominent European clubs expressed an interest in signing him as a teenager. In 2013 he joined AS Monaco, which competes in Ligue 1, the French top-division league. Initially, Mbappé played on AS Monaco’s youth and under-19 teams.

Club Career

Mbappé made his debut with AS Monaco’s first team on December 2, 2015. Not yet 17 years old, he was at that time the youngest first-team player in franchise history. Mbappé saw limited playing time and notched only a single goal in 2015–16. His breakout season came in 2016–17, when he tied for fifth in Ligue 1 play with 15 goals. Behind the high-scoring performances of Mbappé and teammate Radamel Falcao, AS Monaco captured the Ligue 1 title that season. The team also advanced to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League semifinals, where it fell to the Italian powerhouse Juventus .

In August 2017 Mbappé moved within Ligue 1 to join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). That same month PSG also signed Brazilian superstar Neymar . The two players led PSG to three consecutive Ligue 1 titles (2017–18, 2018–19, and 2019–20). In 2018–19 Mbappé topped the league with 33 goals and was named its Player of the Year. He went on to lead the league in goals in each of the next four seasons.

In 2021 PSG added to its star-studded roster by signing another of the world’s best players, Lionel Messi of Argentina. The trio of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappé was widely heralded as a “dream team” and formed one of the most talented front lines in the history of the sport. PSG won three more Ligue 1 titles, triumphing in 2021–22, 2022–23, and 2023–24. Mbappé again earned league Player of the Year honors in 2020–21, 2021–22, 2022–23, and 2023–24.

It was widely reported in February 2024 that Mbappé had informed PSG that he intended to leave the club after the 2023–24 season. In May 2024 Mbappé publicly confirmed that he would be leaving PSG. The following month Real Madrid officially announced that he would be joining that club.

National Team Success

In 2016 Mbappé scored five times for France’s national under-19 team as he led the squad to victory at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He played his first match with France’s senior national team the following year.

Mbappé quickly emerged as one of France’s main scoring threats. At the 2018 World Cup he scored to give France a 1–0 group-stage victory over Peru. He thus became—at age 19—the youngest French player ever to score in World Cup competition. The win sent France into the knockout stages of the tournament. The team advanced to the final, where it defeated Croatia 4–2. Mbappé notched the last of France’s goals, becoming the second teenager to score in a World Cup final (after Pelé in 1958). Mbappé finished the tournament with a total of four goals. He received the World Cup’s Best Young Player award for his performance.

Mbappé continued to play brilliantly for France. In 2021 the French team claimed the UEFA Nations League title. Mbappé delivered the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Spain in the final. At the 2022 World Cup he earned the Golden Boot award with eight goals in seven matches. Mbappé powered France to a second consecutive appearance in the World Cup final, where the team faced an Argentine squad captained by Messi. Although Mbappé scored a hat trick (three goals) and twice brought his team back to tie Argentina, France ultimately lost on penalty kicks. With the hat trick, Mbappé became the first player in history to have tallied four career World Cup final goals.

He began his career at French club Monaco before a high profile move to PSG, where he has stayed since. On the French national team, Mbappe has already won the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Nations League titles.

  • His full name is Kylian Adesanmi Mbappe Lottin.
  • He was born on December 20, 1998, in Paris, France.
  • He is the son of the Cameroonian Wilfried Mbappe and Algerian Fayza Lamari.
  • His father was a professional soccer coach and his mother is a lawyer and former handball player.
  • Mbappe’s dad is also his agent, much like his teammate Neymar.
  • Mbappe has two brothers. An adopted brother Jirès Kembo Ekoko and Ethan Mbappé, both are soccer players.
  • Mbappe’s nickname is Donatello, it was given by his PSG teammates.

Kylian Mbappe Lottin grew up in Paris, France, and while he went to a private Catholic school in the French town of Bondy, many of his teachers claimed him to be a talented but unruly student. Mbappe grew up watching AC Milan as his family were fans of the historic Serie A side, while he was a fan of Real Madrid. Later Mbappe would reveal he loved watching Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario and Cristiano Ronaldo.

As a boy Mbappe played for AS Bondy, a team coached by his father. At Bondy the future French World Cup winner was praised for his dribbling and finishing skills. Mbappe also played on teams that were much older than his age group and his talent was undeniable.

Mbappe’s great talent eventually had him move to the Clairefontaine academy, where his skilled play and impressive explosiveness caught the eye of clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich. Mbappe was asked to train with the Real Madrid U-12 and visit the club. At 14, he was given a trial at Chelsea but eventually chose to start his career at Monaco.

After signing his first pro contract with Ligue 1 side Monaco, Mbappe began his career at 16-years-of-age, and would score his first pro goal in a 3–1 win over Troyes at the age of 17. Mbappe began showcasing his great talents in his second season at the club scoring 26 goals in 44 games. He recorded his first hat trick against Rennes in the Coupe de la Ligue round of 16 in a 7-0 result.

At 18 years of age, Mbappe scored his first Ligue 1 hat trick against Metz, becoming the youngest first team player to score a hat trick since 2005. Mbappe showcased his talents in that season’s UEFA Champions League, especially in a match against Manchester City. In the end he would help Monaco win Ligue 1 for 2016-17 and finish runner up in the Coupe de France.

Signing with PSG

Entering the 2017-18 season, Paris Saint-Germain saw the striker’s unquestionable talent and were able to get him on loan with an option to buy. Mbappe would join a team full of stars, including Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani and Brazilian Neymar. That first season with PSG the gifted French forward would win yet another Ligue 1 crown.

The following season PSG activated Mbappe’s purchase option and he became one of the most expensive teenagers, as well as the second most expensive player in the world, as his transfer fee was in the range of €145 million plus €35 million in add-ons. Mbappe’s numbers only continued to improve at PSG with his best season coming in 2020-21: he scored 42 goals in 47 games.

A 2021/22 season full of rumors

Last year Mbappe was the subject of a lot of transfer talks to Real Madrid as he was coming up on his contract year. Despite the French club signing Lionel Messi, and having Neymar and Mauro Icardi, it was Mbappe who carried much of the attacking weight at PSG. Mbappe would finish the season with 39 goals in 46 games.

In his 5 years at PSG, the French superstar has scored 171 goals in 217 games. Mbappe has helped PSG win 11 championships and came in second in the UEFA Champions League in 2019-20.

Despite a huge push by Real Madrid to sign him in the summer, Mbappe decided to stay at PSG until 2025 by signing a new contract. On France’s national team, the striker is the nation’s biggest star.

Kylian Mbappe earned his first cap for France in 2017 against Luxembourg, and scored his first goal on his fifth cap against the Netherlands in the Stade de France. The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia it was Mbappe’s coming out party.

Mbappe and the French National team

France would become World Cup champions in 2018, and on their way to soccer’s biggest prize, Mbappe scored against Peru, played his best match against Argentina in the round of 16 scoring two goals, and added one in the exciting final against Croatia.

After winning the FIFA World Cup, France would go on to win the UEFA Nations League 2020-21, where Mbappe scored four goals. In a total of only 57 appearances for France, Mbappe has scored 27 international goals. The striker has collected a total of 14 titles between his career with Monaco, France, and PSG.

Mbappe is reported to earn a salary of roughly 20.7 million euros annually . His new PSG contract has raised his salary tremendously and it also coincides with new sponsorship deals that increase his net worth.

The PSG star also earns around $13 million yearly from endorsements with Nike, Video Game company EA Sports and Hublot. For the 2022 World Cup, Mbappe’s public image will only increase as he is one of the faces of the tournament.

As of June 2022, Mbappe became an investor and ambassador for the NFT fantasy sport platform Sorare. He is also a partner in the Sports agency WME, and he founded Zebra Valley , a content creation agency that focuses on sports, music, art and many other topics.

Despite his young age, the French forward is one of the most decorated soccer players in his age group. Having won the World Cup already, he has dominated Ligue 1 with both Monaco and PSG. Here is an overview of some of his individual achievements.

The Reason France Soccer Captain Kylian Mbappé Is Wearing a Mask at EURO 2024

France v Belgium: Round of 16 - UEFA EURO 2024

F rance captain Kylian Mbappé led his team to victory in their EURO 2024 Round of 16 game against Belgium on Monday, with a deflected shot securing the team’s advancement.

The 25-year-old soccer star played his game in a face mask—a recent, and highly discussed, addition to his uniform.

Mbappé is wearing the mask after he broke his nose in a collision in France’s opening game—a 1-0 win against Austria on June 17. In the Austria game, Mbappé was invaluable, forcing the only goal with a cross that deflected in off Maximilian Wöber’s head.

Yet, he collided with the shoulder of Austria defender Kevin Danso, and after being attended to by medical staff, he was escorted off the pitch. He was taken to a hospital in Dusseldorf and the France's Football Federation (FFF) confirmed the extent of the injury.

“The first responses were quite positive as there is no surgery planned for the moment,” FFF President Diallo said in a press conference on June 18.

Mbappé has been handling the situation with humor on social media. Soon after the injury, he joked on X (formerly Twitter), asking his fans: “Any ideas for masks?” Two days later, he posted on his Instagram a photo of him in the Belgium game, with the accompanying caption “Without risks, there are no victories,” leading most to anticipate his return to the competition.

Though the Real Madrid star did not need surgery, he missed France’s game against the Netherlands on June 21, which ended in a draw. He then returned to help his team against Poland in their last group stage game, scoring a goal—his first at a European Championship. Yet, a strike from Robert Lewandowski tied the game up.

Mbappé has been open about how difficult the mask has been for him, though the hope is that his goal represents progress. He noted how it limits his vision, and forces his sweat to build up on his face. Still, he recognizes its necessity after his injury.

“I didn’t think it was going to be, but playing with a mask is an absolute horror,” Mbappé said in a press conference in Dusseldorf on June 30, ahead of the team’s Belgium victory. “The first few days I felt like I was wearing 3D glasses.”

Social media onlookers noticed Mbappé’s mask, creating drawings of him as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, a reference to his welcome gift from Paris Saint-Germain teammate Thaigo Silva back when he first joined the team in 2017. Others noted the mask’s likeness to Batman’s, and compared the soccer star himself to the superhero.

Fans in the stands have decided to wear their own masks in solidarity, both black like Mbappé’s own, and some sillier options.

He shared with the media that it was incredibly hard to sit as an unused substitute in the Netherlands game; the Golden Boot winner of the 2022 World Cup is used to stepping up and shooting goals. But, he was grateful to return to the pitch, knowing that his broken nose, yet to be operated on, could make him a target for rough play.

France is set to play Portugal, and the country’s lead soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, on Friday, July 5. The match will mark Mbappé’s first quarterfinals ever at a EURO championship.

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Kylian Mbappé described Cristiano Ronaldo as a “footballing legend” and “one of a kind” as the superstars prepare to meet in the European Championship quarterfinals.

For many, the major subplot of the Portugal vs. France match in Hamburg on Friday is the head to head between their captains .

Mbappé has previously called Ronaldo his idol and he spoke in glowing terms about the 39-year-old striker who has said he is playing in his last European Championship.

“Everyone knows just how much I admire Cristiano Ronaldo as a player,” Mbappé said on Thursday in the pre-match news conference. “Over time, I have been lucky to brush shoulders with him, to get to know and have a chat with him. We are still in contact. He is always helping me — he keeps up with what is going on in my life and he gives me tips.

“It’s an honor for me, especially when we think about what he has done for the footballing world. Regardless of what has happened before or what happens after, he will be a footballing legend.”

Mbappé recently signed for Real Madrid, where Ronaldo starred from 2009-18, and now he could bring an end to his rival’s European Championship career.

So, does he see it as a “passing-of-the-baton” occasion?

“No, I think that he is one of kind,” Mbappé said. “There is only one Cristiano Ronaldo, there will only ever be one.

“I am following my own path. My dream of playing at Real Madrid is coming a reality. I hope that I will also be able to mark football but I am not going to write the next chapter of Cristiano Ronaldo’s story. I hope I will be able to be one of a kind at Real Madrid and be completely different.”

Mbappé, who was the top scorer at the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, has netted only once in three games at Euro 2024 — from the penalty spot — as the French struggle to get their attacking game flowing.

Indeed, no France player has scored from open play, the team’s other two goals being own-goals.

Mbappé said he was having to modify his style of play for his country because of the different personnel behind him.

“A forward needs to adapt to all the different situations, to teammates, to different player profiles on the pitch,” he said. “We had different players when I first started — Paul Pogba, for example, in midfield and with him I knew I needed to get my head down and run. I call for the ball and the ball is at my feet.

“Now, it’s different. The idea is about analyzing the type of players you are playing with. With the players we have, maybe we can’t play into space because it isn’t their type of playing style. But if there are spaces, I love eating up those spaces.”

Among those being called out for particular criticism for France’s lack of a cutting edge in attack is Antoine Griezmann, who has played in two positions — central midfield and on the right wing — so far and was even dropped for the group closer against Poland.

Mbappé said Griezmann has “been in the firing line” and deserved better after playing 133 times for France and being a key member of the team that won the World Cup in 2018 and reached the final in 2022.

“It is maybe a tough spell at the moment and it’s a shame we are kicking him while he is down,” Mbappé said. “It doesn’t sit well with me — he is one of the best players in modern French football.”

France's attacking headache will soon be Real Madrid's as Kylian Mbappe continues to struggle as a striker

The challenge to best position the french superstar has shaped les bleus' euro 2024.

untitled-design-2024-07-05t232540-089.png

PARIS -- France are into the semifinals of UEFA Euro 2024 after seeing off Portugal in the quarterfinals this Friday in Hamburg. Les Bleus have not been at their best this summer in Germany but produced another winning display, albeit one that took them scoreless through 120 minutes, and demanded nerves of steel during a penalty shootout, to advance past the Portuguese and their ageing talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in revenge for their 2016 final defeat on home soil. Didier Deschamps' French side still remain impressively solid in defense, but downed Roberto Martinez's Selecao at Volksparkstadion to set up a semi against favorites Spain while still not finding any teeth in attack.

In many ways, France's Euro 2024 story has been the same as Paris Saint-Germain's this past season, with the struggle to get the absolute maximum out of Kylian Mbappe from start to finish the dominant theme -- sometimes too much so. Logically, some of the difficulties encountered in Paris with Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Randal Kolo Muani have continued with Les Bleus in terms of plenty of chances created, but precious few of them being taken. Even outside of those three Parisien teammates, though, the issue of the French captain and his best position has remained a constant challenge for Didier Deschamps and his staff to try to solve.

On top of the PSG trio of Dembele, Barcola and Kolo Muani, there have been unsuccessful attempts to incorporate Antoine Griezmann and Marcus Thuram into the attack with former focal point Olivier Giroud barely getting a look in during his final outing before international retirement. The main issue with those combinations, some of which did not even include Mbappe as he missed the Netherlands draw, has been identifying the right fixed point in the attack with enough creativity around that player to enable the new Real Madrid signing to align himself on the left so that he can cut inside.

Arguably the best example of this was the 1-1 draw with Poland in Group D when Mbappe started through the middle with Barcola on the left and Dembele on the right -- one of Luis Enrique's regular front three pairings with PSG this past campaign -- which produced the same issues. The skipper barely lasted the opening 45 in the mixed central role before forcibly placing himself on the left yet only scoring when Dembele won a penalty despite a handful of very good opportunities for France.

Will Mbappe's issues persist at Real Madrid?

Why, then, should it be any different once he has joined Real this summer and Carlo Ancelotti starts to try to bed him in alongside the likes of Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo? The expectation is that Mbappe will fill the void created in the middle but that will logically eat into Bellingham's impact if he maintains the same forward-thinking approach he has had to show during his debut season at Santiago Bernabeu. Vini Jr. is also very comfortable on the left occupying almost exactly the same role as the one which the man from Bondy covets on the field and Rodrygo must already know that he will be the last player to be considered in that star-studded pecking order.

Ancelotti is known for getting the best out of superstar names and getting oversized egos to coexist yet this could be one of the biggest challenges of his career given the potential for a front line featuring Mbappe, Bellingham and Vini Jr. It could be that the Italian master surprises us all and goes for a totally different system which requires buy in outside of multiple stars' comfort zones but on paper at least, it is shaping up to be exactly the same headache for Ancelotti that it has been for Deschamps in Germany and Luis Enrique in Paris.

Further underlining the situation with Les Bleus this summer has been the fact that Mbappe is now captain which was not the case with PSG and will not be the case -- at least not immediately -- with Real. French hopes understandably cling to their talisman which is something that Luis Enrique rallied against over the second half of last term when he sought to build towards a future version of PSG without Mbappe and it generated no end of controversy outside of the UEFA Champions League where he remained a key figure. In Madrid, he will not be Los Blancos' only star player and that itself suggests that he will have to fit in and make the efforts that Ancelotti asks of him.

Perhaps inevitably, it appears as if Mbappe is headed for the same moment that Cristiano Ronaldo experienced in his first few years with Real. That means a transformation into a profile of player capable of forgetting his tendencies while out wide and focusing on a truly instrumental central-based position. This is unlikely to be an overnight reinvention, though, so the question is how long will it take for that unavoidable change to take place and dictate the way that he plays on the field for both Real and France?

It should be considered fitting, then, that the beginning of Mbappe's next transformation act -- after going from Neymar's protégé to peer before evolving into PSG's figurehead -- could be traced back in the future to France's quarterfinal win over Portugal here which may well have just ushered in the end of Cristiano Ronaldo's international career.
