- 日本在二十世紀下半葉一直根據於 1947 年制度的新憲法行事。而 1947 年的新憲法則是根據「波茨坦條約」修定，以建立一個民主政府。
- 天皇制度名存實亡： 新憲法規定主權在民，天皇只是國家的象徵，負責外交儀式。而且新憲法保障了基本人權，例如言論，集會，出版，信仰等自由。
- 三權分立制度 （立法，行政，司法）：１）行政部門在內閣總理大臣之下，成立獨立個體，負責行政工作。（行政）２）司法審判改為由國民直接審查，在最高裁判所長官以及審判官管轄下行使完全獨立的裁判。（司法）３）國會制定的法律以及內閣所發表的命令，有違憲法者一律有權宣告無效（立法）。三權分立為一完善的政治體制，向方不受任何一方所制肘，具有高度獨立性。
- 實行國會及內閣制： １）國會由日本人民選舉而產出的組織，分為眾議院及參議院，主要行使法律及預算的議決，總理大臣的任命以及條約承諾。２）而內閣的成員中，有一半以上由國會議員選任，相比起明治憲法中內閣主要由天皇所任命而言，新憲法的內閣更有代表性及認受性。而內閣總理大臣則由國會議員之中選任，能充分代表民意，具有民主特質。
- 與外國的經濟來往及經濟援助： １）東南亞市場：自 1951-1952 年日本與多國簽訂「三藩市條約」後，日本向許多東南亞國家提供勞工及商品作為賠償，成功打進東南亞市場。在 1990 年代，日本將 65% 的經濟援助給予東南亞國家。２）中國市場：日本自 1970 年起與中國建立緊密外交關係，在經濟上協助中國，例如於 1984 年日本宣佈將向中國借出 4700 億日元的貸款。３）美國及外國市場：在韓戰及越戰爆發期間向美國出口了許多工業產品。而且向其他西方國家輸出眾多工業及科技產品。（日本科技於 1980 年代在全球扮演重要角色）可見日本於二十世紀下半葉的經濟影響力遍及全球。
- 經濟發展急速： 基於盟軍的努力及日本政府的努力，例如美國向日本提供經濟援助，而日本政府亦訂立了許多經濟計劃（國民收入培增計劃）日本於二十世紀下半葉的經濟發展十分急速，例如日本在 1960 年代經濟增長率平均每年 13% ，在 1970 年，國民生產總值達到十千九百七十五億，超過英，法，西德。，可見日本於二十世紀下半葉的經濟發展十分進步。在 1980 年代日本長期居於世界經濟第二強國。
- 自 1952 年與美國簽訂「安全保障保約」，奠定了日本自衛隊的角色。期後於 1957 ， 1962 ， 1967 及 1972 分別執行四次防衛力擴充計劃，直至 1980 年代，日本自衛隊海陸軍共有二十七萬多人。而軍中裝備則大多依賴美國供給（自 1952 至 1965 年間因家提供的軍事援助高達五千六百億），期後日本經濟發達後自給自足，因此至 1980 年代日本已經擁有一支高質量的自衛隊，能保護國家安全。
- 而且，日本承諾永不主動侵略及復興軍國主義，例如 1977 年的福田主義明確指出日本絕對不會成為軍事大國，可見日本在二十世紀下半葉採取和平外交政策，不主動侵略。
- 東南亞：日本於 1970 年代前與東南亞只維持經濟來往，在 1977 年，福田赳夫提出福田主義，指明日本永遠不會成為軍事大國，並希望與東南亞國家在平等基礎上建立外交關係。福田主義消除了東南亞國家對日本的恐懼，大大改善了東南亞與日本的關係。因此自 1980 年代起日本大大增加在東南亞的投資，成為貿易伙伴。
- 中國，南韓：日本於 1972 年與中國正式建交，並於 1978 年與中國簽訂「中日和平友好條約」，與中國關係更為緊密，在 1984 年日本什至宣佈向中國提供 4700 億日元貸款。而且，日本亦於 1980 年代積極與南韓建交，首相中曾根康弘更在 1983 年訪問南韓，正式開展日韓兩國的外交關係。
- 美國： 1970 年代起，日本積極增強與美國的外交關係，例如 1975 年日本三木首相訪問美國， 1979 年大平正芳訪美時強調兩國是「建設性伙伴關係」等。大大增強了日本與美國自盟軍佔領後的關係。由以上可見日本與許多國家皆維持平等及和平外交，是外交發達的象徵。
- 在國際上的影響力：自 1980 年代後，日本夢想成為政治及外交強國，於是積極參與國際事務，例如於 1980 年代的西方七國高峰會議上支持美國在西歐部署中程導彈。又於 1992 年參加聯合國維持和平行動，派遣 600 名自衛隊隊員到東埔寨。可見日本在國際上亦扮演舉足輕重的角色，成為國際上有影響力的亞洲國家。
- 自 1947 年頒布「教育基本法」起，便強逼日本學生接受 6 年小學及 3 年中學的 9 年免費教育，令日本人民識字率提升至世界數一數二的地位。而且，日本政府自 1970 年代起積極發展高等教育，興建許多大專學校，大大增加了日本人升讀高等學校的機會，在 1970 年代的就業人口統計，每 7 個日本人有 1 個是大學生。可見日本在二十世紀下半葉的人民除了普遍接受過教育外，亦有很大比例是曾接受高等教育的學生。
- 在課程編制上，日本教育由於必須符合日本戰後需要走向經濟現代化並放棄軍事擴張，課程中廢除了軍國主義及絕對服從天皇等思想，而加入許多西方自由思想，例如民主，人權，和平等思想。令國民相對於明治時期的教育敕語影響下更為思想獨立，政府對外國思想亦持開放態度，令日本人在教育中能培養出批判性思考

The name, meaning “electric steel,” derives from the high-quality-steel industry established there soon after the October Revolution in 1917. During World War II , parts of the heavy-machine-building industry were relocated there from Ukraine, and Elektrostal is now a centre for the production of metallurgical equipment. Pop. (2006 est.) 146,189.
