NFL Announces Referee Assignments For Wild Card Weekend

Avatar photo

The 2023 NFL playoff field has been officially set and wildcard weekend will kick on Saturday and end on Monday night.

Twelve teams will play this weekend with the No. 1-seeded Baltimore Ravens of the AFC and San Francisco 49ers of the NFC waiting in the wings with their first-round bye.

We know the dates, times, and locations for all the matchups, and now the NFL officially announced the head referee assignments for all six wildcard games:

  • Cleveland Browns vs. Houston Texans – Clay Martin
  • Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Buffalo Bills – Carl Cheffers
  • Los Angeles Rams vs. Detroit Lions – Craig Wrolstad
  • Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs – Brad Rogers
  • Green Bay Packers vs. Dallas Cowboys – Ron Torbert
  • Philadelphia Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Adrian Hill
Just announced: Here are the referee assignments for Wild Card Weekend: pic.twitter.com/bcEilyYWDI — Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) January 8, 2024

Notably, Brad Allen was not added to the playoff lineup after his officiating crew called a controversial illegal touching penalty on the Detroit Lions at the end of their Week 17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Otherwise, though, the list of referees looks pretty sound, with Cheffers and Torbert both having Super Bowl officiating experience.

The matchups are intriguing as well, with huge storylines on the docket like Tyreek Hill’s return to Kansas City, Matthew Stafford’s return to Detroit, and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy taking on the Packers at home.

Ideally, who the referees are shouldn’t play into the outcome of any of these games.

But stranger things have happened in the NFL, as we’ve seen both in the playoffs and the regular season over the past several years.

Chalk Talk: The “Uncommon” Things that Coach Sean Payton Wants His Players to Do Each Day Might Surprise You

Coach Payton also revealed the common practices he’s moving away from as a coach, what’s on his vision board, what he saw in his time “in the booth,” and what he’s looking for when deciding which players will make it on the bus.

Every time we talk to NFL coach Sean Payton, we enjoy hearing his perspective on all things football.  He’s just a down-to-earth guy with a great sense of humor who puts his visor on every day and struggles with color-coordinating outfits like the rest of us.

He also loves pushing for change in his club, the league, and individuals – using data to inform those changes. It’s why he was one of the earliest advocates and adopters of NFL Next Gen Stats, which is powered by Zebra RFID technology. Coach Payton knows that once you stop guessing at what’s happening on the field and start combing through concrete numbers, it becomes easier to fine-tune everything from your training plan to your playbook.

Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why he was the winningest coach in New Orleans Saints franchise history. He used data to inform every decision he made and encouraged all his personnel to follow suit. Then again, maybe it’s because he started taking an “uncommon” approach to recruiting, teaching, and motivating players. Maybe it’s because he prioritizes a player’s sense of humor as much as he does their speed, stamina, and strength. All we know is that Coach Payton is one of the most grounded people we know, and we appreciate the candor with which he answers every question we throw at him. For example, in this episode, we asked him…

How confident (or vulnerable) he really felt when changing jobs and whether it was easier for him to go from the gridiron to the broadcast studio or the studio back to the gridiron.

What it was that really pushed (or pulled) him back to coaching.

Who’s been picking his ‘kicks in recent years. (Yes, we talked fashion with Coach Payton and he passed along some cool styling tricks he learned in the Fox Sports studio.)

How his coaching style has changed in the last 18 years and how we might see it change even more in the coming months.

What’s on his vision board (and why he even has a vision board).

What he learned about the game – and the competition – while in the booth that he didn’t pick up on the field as a coach all those years.

What he thinks most influences the success of an NFL player or team each season.

How he decides which 53 players will make it on the bus each game.

Why he has been such a proponent of data collection and analysis in the past decade and the NFL’s adoption of RFID and data analytics technology at the league level.

  • What he really thinks about the changes happening in college football right now.

Milwaukee Brewers designate pitcher Dallas Keuchel for assignment

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Dallas Keuchel experiment in Milwaukee appears to be over.

The one-time Cy Young Award winner, acquired from Seattle in late June for cash, was designated for assignment Sunday. Keuchel gave up five consecutive hits to open the fourth inning as the Brewers let an early five-run lead slip away in a 6-5 loss to the Nationals on Saturday.

In four starts with the Brewers, Keuchel posted a 5.40 ERA, allowing 10 runs and 23 hits in 16 2/3 innings, without a decision. The 36-year-old left-hander made it past the fourth inning just once, allowing two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings in his second start against Colorado.

Milwaukee staked Keuchel to a 5-0 lead in the first Saturday, be he was lifted after allowing five hits and three runs without an out in the fourth inning, giving up eight hits overall in a 65-pitch outing.

The Brewers are expecting several injured pitchers to return after the All-Streak break, which contributed to the decision.

“Obviously, Dallas is a great pedigree and what he did, he kept us in a lot of games,” Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Sunday. “He did a really good job for us. ... I think it comes down to the number of players we have coming back.”

Image

The Brewers have seven days to either work out a trade involving Keuchel or see if clears waivers. Keuchel also can reject an outright assignment and opt to become a free agent.

“We spoke to him last night,” Arnold said. “He was great, he’s a real pro. Obviously, we want what’s best for him.”

Keuchel, who won the 2015 AL Cy Young with Houston, was 7-4 with a 3.93 ERA this season with the Mariner’s Triple-A affiliate Tacoma, when he was acquired by Milwaukee.

Keuchel pitched in 10 games, including six starts, with Minnesota in 2023, with a 2-1 record and 5.97 ERA. In 2022, he was 2-9 with a 9.20 ERA in 14 starts with three different teams.

Keuchel is 103-92 with 4.04 ERA in his 13-year major league career, with two All-Star appearances. He was 20-8 with a 2.43 ERA with Houston in 2015 when he won the Cy Young.

Broncos Veteran OL Shares True Thoughts on the Three-Way QB Battle

Keith cummings | 21 hours ago.

May 23, 2024; Englewood, CO, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix (10) and quarterback Jarrett Stidham (8) during organized team activities at Centura Health Training Center.

  • Denver Broncos

Most of the attention during Denver Broncos training camp will, understandably, be on the three-way quarterback battle. When push comes to shove, the quarterback who emerges victorious will have to show some serious chops, but exactly how the Broncos shape up around the trio of signal-callers will be important.

There's also a crucial three-way battle coming at the center spot, and that organic dynamic will have a direct effect on the quarterback situation. A center tends to bond with his quarterback in unique ways — telepathic connections that often leave even the most seasoned coaches more than a little puzzled.

Thus, it's no great stretch to suggest that perhaps the second-year Alex Forsyth, the center who spent time snapping to Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix while the pair was together at Oregon, is perhaps the early leader in the clubhouse to win the job. Forsyth will square off with the third-year Luke Wattenberg and veteran newcomer Sam Mustipher.

Whatever way the chips ultimately fall, veteran right guard Quinn Meinerz is confident that things will fall into place at center — and iron will indeed sharpen iron.

"We have three great centers," Meinrez said of Forsyth, Wattenberg, and Mustipher during OTAs. "We've been kind of interchanging all three of them. It's going to be really exciting to see during training camp who is going to take that job. I've enjoyed playing with all three of them so far in OTAs."

Things will inevitably circle back to that marquee battle under the center to determine which player is given the controls at quarterback. As Nix crosses swords with Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson, even Meinrez can't help but indulge in that conversation a little further when asked.

"I would say it's a similar thing with the centers, where you have three guys who are competing and doing great every single day," Meinerz said of the Broncos' quarterback battle. "It's really fun to be part of that where you have three great quarterbacks and three great centers. They're all competing for their job. Come training camp, it will be really interesting to see what happens. I think they are all playing great and doing great things."

What happens next on the Broncos beat? Don't miss out on any news and analysis!  Take a second, sign up for our free newsletter, and get breaking Broncos news delivered to your inbox daily!

Fundamental to the entire process, especially that of the quarterbacks' outlook, is the Broncos returning four out of five O-line starters along in 2024. Meinerz believes the four returning veterans can iron out any complications at center simply by knowing what their assignments are.

"Our practices, you can feel it and you can see it out there of everyone really getting off on the ball and getting off on the snap and moving around," Meinerz said of the effort at pracitce. "This is not necessarily about the physical nature of the game; it's more about knowing your assignment—the first two steps, initial contact and then kind of shutting it down. As a team, I think we are in a really good spot."

Meinerz clearly feels his veteran unit can adjust by itself, but in truth, just how the eventual starting quarterback bonds with them might be a tad more complicated. If Nix's familiarity with Forsyth gives him an advantage, then Stidham — Denver's only incumbent quarterback — should feel the most comfortable with the O-line as a unit, considering he started two games behind them last year.

Since Broncos head coach Sean Payton showed Russell Wilson the door, the changes to the lineup have been embraced by the returning veterans. Call it a meritocracy if you wish, but the fact that new faces will be competing for starting jobs is exciting and intriguing for Meinerz in equal measure.

Broncos training camp kicks off on July 26. The rookies will report on July 17, while the veterans check in on July 23.
