24 Short Task Sites for Making Money From Home

Author: Holly Reisem Hanna

February 18, 2024 122 Comments

Is your daily schedule unpredictable? You can still make money from home, just use short task sites. Here are 24 gigs you can do anytime. via @theworkathomewoman

If you have a little one at home — you know how difficult it can be to get things done. But just because you have a household filled with chatter and unpredictable schedules doesn’t mean that you can’t work from home. Short tasks, also called micro-jobs or pay-per-task jobs, are the perfect way for busy moms to earn some extra money while still being readily available for their kiddos.

A micro-task job is any job or assignment that can be completed in a short amount of time. The tasks that can be completed vary in nature (writing, editing, taking surveys, transcription, watching a video, online research, etc.), as does the pay. But the reason this is such an excellent opportunity for moms is that the tasks can be done at any time, and the majority of short jobs don’t require phone work , which requires a quiet household.

If you have kiddos running around your house, here are 24 small task sites that allow you to work whenever you have free time, and make extra money on the side.

work from home assignments

1. Swagbucks

Swagbucks is a microtask platform where you can earn points called SB, which you can redeem for gift cards from places like Starbucks, Walmart, PayPal and Visa. With Swagbucks, you can earn SB by playing games , answering questions, shopping online, and even surfing the web using their search bar. If you refer your friends — you can earn even more. New users will receive a $10.00 sign-up bonus! The thing I like about Swagbucks is you can redeem your earnings with as little as $3.00 in your account.

  • Swagbucks has a B rating with the Better Business Bureau

2. InboxDollars

With InboxDollars , US residents can earn cash for taking surveys, reading emails, playing games, redeeming coupons, searching the web, and shopping online. Membership is free, and you’ll earn $5.00 for signing up. Your account must reach a $15 threshold before your payment is issued. Payment options include PayPal, American Express or Visa Pre-Paid cards, or gift cards from major retailers. InboxDollars is open to US residents 18 years and older. If you’d like to know more, check out our full review of InboxDollars .

  • InboxDollars has a B rating with the Better Business Bureau

3. Course Hero

Course Hero is a short task platform that hires native English speakers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia to tutor high school and college students with course-specific questions. Individuals must have a bachelor’s degree. Tutors earn an average of $3.00 per question, earning around $12-$20 per hour. Work as many hours as you’d like; all you need is a reliable internet connection.

  • Course Hero has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau

4. TELUS International

TELUS International , which acquired Lionbridge, hires independent contractors to work on microtasks like translation, transcription, rating ads, annotation, search engine evaluation, and testing. You must first prove your proficiency by taking and passing relevant evaluation tests (which I’ve heard are pretty challenging). Once they have your evaluation scores, you’ll receive invites to work on available projects. With these gigs, you can work whenever, wherever, and as much as you’d like.

  • TELUS International has an A- rating with the Better Business Bureau

Fiverr is a little different in that you don’t search for jobs. Instead, you post tasks you’re willing to complete for $5.00-$10,000. People sell everything from writing services, design services, and voice-over services to making phone calls and videos. Once you make a sale, Fiverr will keep a fee of 20%, and payments will be made via PayPal.

If you’re interested in how people are making a full-time income with Fiverr, check out The Fiverr Mastermind Group. They are six Fiverr power sellers who earn six figures a year each, and they wrote an e-book about their success with the platform: The Fiverr Master Class : The Fiverr Secrets Of Six Power Sellers That Enable You To Work From Home!

  • Fiverr gets an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau

6. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Over at Amazon’s MTurk , you can make money online working on HITS (Human Intelligence Tasks). A few of the tasks that I saw listed were transcribing information from a business card to a form with a payout of $0.02. Another task was transcribing a voicemail from audio to text (audio length of three hours), a payout of $76.19. After completing the task and the requester approves your work, the money goes into your Amazon payments account or onto an Amazon gift card .

Amazon MTurk tends to get mixed reviews. Some people complained of low payouts, and others have said their work wasn’t approved, so they didn’t get paid. We have no way of knowing the quality of their work, and if denial of payment was justified, so read through reviews before deciding to join.

  • Amazon’s MTurk receives a 2.5-star rating on Trustpilot

7. Clickworker

Clickworker is a task site platform where you can get paid for writing, translating, researching, and collecting data. Create an account, fill out your profile, complete a qualification assessment, then bid on jobs. Payments are made by SEPA bank account transfers or PayPal once your account reaches 5.00 euros and your tax information has been completed. Clickworker’s clients include Groupon, Tennis Point, Honda, PayPal, and others.

  • Clickworker receives a 3.2-star rating on Indeed

Appen is a virtual workspace where you can earn money by completing simple tasks on your computer. Duties include Internet research, data collection, data categorization, content creation, content moderation, surveys, and other projects and microtasks that can be done anywhere in the world.

  • Appen receives a 3.5-star rating on Indeed

9. Vericant

Vericant is a platform where individuals can rate videos for cash at any time of the day. Remote raters will assess the spoken English of international college students applying to schools in the United States. To be eligible to rate videos, you must be able to work 5-15 hours per week between September and March. You also need to be a native English speaker from North America, have a bachelor’s degree, and have an excellent command of the English language.

  • Vericant receives a 4-star rating on Glassdoor.com

10. Field Agent

Field Agent allows you to make money by completing mystery shopping gigs on your phone. From checking shelf availability and product reviews to surveys and buy and try. Tasks pay anywhere from $3.00-$12.00 per job, and payments are made via PayPal. Field Agent works with brands like Tyson, Target, and Hershey’s and has been featured on CNET, Forbes, and The New York Times. This app is available for iOS and Android devices.

  • Field Agent receives a 4.5-star rating in the Apple app store

While not promoted as a short task site, Rev offers task-based positions for transcribers, translators, and closed captioners that can be done anytime. The pay range for translators is by language minute, so for instance, German pays $3.00 a minute.

For transcribers, it’s $0.30-$1.10 per audio minute, and for closed captioners, it’s $0.54-$1.10 per audio minute. With Rev, you choose your schedule and projects, and payments are made weekly via PayPal. Rev has been featured in Inc, The Wall Street Journal, and VentureBeat.

  • Rev receives a 2.7-star rating on Indeed

12. GigWalk

GigWalk is a mobile workforce of individuals using their smartphones to perform short tasks. Register, apply for an assignment, and then complete the task (usually verifying roads and street signs, geographic landmarks, or transportation options). Gigwalk’s workforce is available in multiple US cities. GigWalk has been featured on CNN, Business Insider, and Forbes.

  • Gigwalk receives a 4-star rating in the Apple app store

13. Data Annotation Tech

Data Annotation Tech is a small task platform where you make money completing various AI tasks, such as surveys, interacting with chatbots, creative writing, coding projects, and more. While no experience is required for these AI jobs, they are looking for applicants with excellent writing skills, critical thinking ability, and a high level of attention to detail. With Data Annotation Tech, you can earn $20 per hour for writing tasks, and $40 per hour for coding tasks, and payments are made via PayPal. These online tasks are available to individuals in the US, Canada, Ireland, UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

  • Data Annotation Tech gets a 4-star rating on Glassdoor

14. TaskRabbit

TaskRabbit is an on-demand site where you complete tasks such as house cleaning, delivery services, handyman work, furniture assembly, grocery shopping, administrative help, and more. To get started, create an account, get a background check, then browse the open tasks in your city and make an offer. TaskRabbit keeps 20% of what you make, and payments are made via check every two weeks once your account reaches $25.00.

  • TaskRabbit gets a 4.3-star rating on Trustpilot

15. Fancy Hands

Fancy Hands hires US-based virtual assistants to complete small tasks like making phone calls, scheduling appointments, tracking down the best price for a product or service, internet research, and data entry. Tasks are worth anywhere from $3.00-$7.00 per task and go up from there. Payments are made via Dwolla every other Tuesday. With this job, you can work on your own schedule, day or night. One thing to note. I’ve heard some people say that the platform is saturated with workers, so there isn’t very much work available. Be sure to read the most current reviews before you take the time to apply.

  • Fancy Hands receives a 2.9-star rating on Glassdoor

16. Datavio.ai

Datavio.ai which is part of iSoftStone, hires people from around the globe to work on short tasks like app testing, annotation, transcription, data labeling, translation, and more. Each project has different skill and education requirements and varying pay rates. One data collection project required users to work 30-40 hours per week and paid $25 per hour. All the projects I viewed were independent contracting roles; some included training, while others did not.

  • iSoftStone gets a 3.5-star rating on Glassdoor.com

17. Respondent

Respondent is a research study organization that pays individuals to participate in focus group studies, short surveys, and website testing gigs. According to their website, the average study or survey is 30 minutes in length, and the average payout is $75 per study. Many of their studies are for professionals, not the general public, so you’ll need to meet specific criteria to qualify for studies. Payments come through your PayPal account.

  • Respondent receives a 1.6-star rating on Trustpilot, but many of the poor reviews were complaining that they didn’t qualify for any studies. I’ve had good luck using the platform, so be sure to read my full review on Respondent .

18. UserTesting

If you have short periods of quiet time in your schedule (perhaps during your child’s nap time), you can make money testing websites and apps on UserTesting . With this platform, you create an account and browse projects. Once you find a project that fits your demographic, you’ll take a screener test, and if you’re a match, you’ll get an invite to the project. UserTesting has short, medium, and longer length projects that pay anywhere from $4-$120. Payments come every 14 days via PayPal.

  • UserTesting has a 3.9-star rating on Trustpilot

19. JustAnswer

JustAnswer pays individuals to answer questions online in their area of training or expertise. They currently hire people from the US and Canada, and during the application process, you’ll need to provide your relevant licenses or certifications. With this short task site, you can work as many hours as you’d like; log in wherever you have some free time. According to their website, top earners can make $2,000-$7,000 per month; monthly payments are distributed via PayPal.

  • JustAnswer has an A rating with the Better Bussiness Bureau

If you enjoy talking to people online and would like to help them practice their conversational English skills, check out Cambly . With Cambly, you can work anywhere, anytime, getting paid to talk to others online. You’ll earn $0.17 per minute talking to adults and $0.20 per minute talking to kids. You don’t need experience or a degree to get started. Payments are made every Monday via PayPal. Check out our full review on Cambly .

  • Cambly receives a 3.3-star rating on Indeed

21. ACD Direct

ACD Direct pays individuals to answer phone calls, email inquiries, and chat messages. Agents can make their own schedules and work as much or as little as needed. New agents earn $0.25 per talk minute and, with bonuses and incentives, can earn up to $0.35 per talk minute; rates vary for chat and email inquiries. With ACD Direct, you’ll work as an independent contractor and receive paychecks twice a month via direct deposit. They currently do not accept workers from California, Delaware, Massachusetts, Louisiana, West Virginia, Wyoming, Vermont, Washington, and South Dakota.

  • ACD Direct has a B- rating with the Better Bussiness Bureau

22. User Interviews

User Interviews recruits individuals from the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Germany, France, and the UK to complete online surveys, focus groups, diary studies, online interviews, and user tests. Assignments vary in length from 10 minutes to a few hours, and pay averages $40-$200 depending on the length and qualifying criteria. Most participants can qualify for a study in less than 24 hours.

  • User Interviews receives a 3.4-star rating on Trustpilot

Upwork is a freelance platform where small business owners can post tasks and projects that they need to have completed. Some projects pay by the hour, and others pay a fixed price based on the project. The main job categories include IT, design, sales and marketing, writing and translation, admin and customer support, and finance and accounting. Once you find a task that appeals to you, send your proposal to the business owner and wait to see if you’re chosen for the assignment. While some gigs are low-paying, you can earn good money by establishing yourself as a reliable and talented freelancer. Danny Ivy started on Upwork and generated six figures in one year — you can read his Upwork success story here .

  • Upwork has a 4.2-star rating on Indeed

With Byron , you can work on administrative tasks any time of the day or night. According to their website, some assistants work one hour per month, while others work up to 160 hours per month. To apply, you must be a US resident, have at least five years of administrative experience, and a college education. Depending on your experience, Byron pays $20-$28 per hour every two weeks via PayPal.

  • Byron has a 4.3-star rating on Glassdoor.com

Last Words About Short Task Jobs

A few last words about micro-task sites.

There are other micro job sites out there, but not all are reputable. If you find another short task site, please do your research to ensure that they are legit and worth your time. Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Indeed, and the BBB are excellent places to search for reviews. Also, look to see when the app or website was last updated. Apps and websites that are sitting on the web stagnant are susceptible to hackers placing viruses, malware, and trojans which can potentially steal your personal information.

Because opportunities will not always be available, you should consider signing up for multiple sites. This way, you have a better chance of consistently having tasks to choose from. But before you register, you’ll want to create an email account just for these opportunities. Many of these sites send a lot of emails, and it will be easier to manage if you have a separate email account just for your short task jobs.

All of these are independent contracting roles, so you’ll need to set aside money for self-employment taxes.

Lastly, short tasks will not make you rich, but they are an easy way to earn a little extra cash without having to get a job. After all, you’re most likely online, so instead of scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, use your time to make some extra money.

Hello Holly, I am mainly writing this to thank you so much for making something like this even available to us people out here, that are seeking work@home gigs. I am looking for a few for myself & for my 40 something Neice, she’s in dire straits right now. Well, I’d imagine that many people are, well I have found some interesting possibilities on your listings for my Neice & for myself as well. So thank you very much for taking the time out of your own life to offer all of these listings. For me I am nearly age 71 now & I am on a very low Social Security income, so hopefully the ones I’ve checked off with have a job or jobs for me, thanks again.

It looks very suspicious. There is no information about the company, and there is no way to contact them. They have vague job descriptions, and there’s no presence of the company other than their website.

Oh my goodness I do not know if it is me or what but CrowdFlower is horrible! I tried it just now because of the recommendation and I couldn’t log in to the task. It said it couldn’t find my email address. I don’t know if they need to update the script on their site or what (which looks criminally old BTW) but I’m going to try out OneSpace first. Thanks for the articles, I work full time but going to try to earn some on the side to pay off some bills that came up recently out of the blue and some moving expenses that will be coming up. Thanks again!

August 16, 2017 at 9:12 am

Hey Ashley, Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ve never tried CrowdFlower, so maybe some other people can speak about their experience with them.

I have been a VA for over 6 years. Recently Upwork (formerly Odesk) has changed it policy and I found out I can no longer work when I came back from a hiatus. The nice thing about Upwork is that people from all over the world can work here for people all over theworld too. Can you please recommend work sites like this? I found out that many US based work from home do not hire people outside the US and you need a 1099. I love working online and on graveyard shifts. Tips are highly appreciated ( I did look up the other websites mentioned above).

Hi Holly Thank you sharing such great information. Everything is so helpful and informative. I am semi-retired and I would like to work remotely. During the week I take care of our granddaughter but I would like to earn extra money and the Task Jobs seem to offer the best opportunity for me. However, I have one question concerning Crowdflower. Do you know if it is possible to pick the tasks you would like to work on and complete? Thank you Barbara

August 6, 2017 at 1:37 pm

Hi Barbara, I believe you can choose which tasks you want to complete. Good luck and keep me posted!

I use Field Agent, the jobs vary in what is asked; the key is to reserve the assignment as quickly as possible and then complete the job. Somethings have been difficult to complete with small children (i.e. beer store audit), however I sometimes just pop them in the shopping cart while I complete the assignment.

Thank you so much for compiling the information! I will definately check out these platforms!

Thanks for sharing, Monica. I’ve been wanting to try Field Agent out — haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I’m looking for a no experience necessary jobs that pay via PayPal. No phone calls required. I can type but not as fast as I used to so transcribing is not an option. Spare5 is another great option. I’m from Venezuela, and as you well know, is very difficult for me to get dollars, so I started to looking a way to make money just using my computer. Spare 5 is a short task site too, and you can download the app for Iphone on the app store and also work from a computer, in its web app. Tasks are very intuitive and each one has instructions, in case you can’t understand or just don’t know how to do it.

To sign up: open spare5.com, then click on “start tasking”, select “launch webtasks” and fill the blank spaces. I write this because at first I didn’t know where to sign up, just in case anyone could have the same confusion as me.

PD: Sorry for my basic english.

I think micro-tasks are great for beginners! They don’t take any special skills and they’re a good way to earn money in between looking for jobs, polishing your resume, and interviewing.

And if you use Task Rabbit — you can make pretty decent money — although you won’t be working online.

Finding and Landing Remote Jobs

Working remotely sounds great, but how do you find and land remote jobs in the first place? Let’s review the different types of remote work, resources to find these jobs, and tips to optimize for the unique hiring process associated with them.

Understanding remote jobs

When you’re searching for remote job opportunities, you’ll discover there are several different types of employment available. Work-from-home jobs usually fall under four categories: full-time, part-time, freelance, and contractual. The following sections will explain each one in more detail.

Full-time remote jobs

Full-time remote work is similar to any other type of traditional employment. You’ll typically have a set schedule for about 40 hours each week, report to a manager, and receive a full benefits package from the company. You might also have routine meetings and collaborate virtually with team members in your department.

These aspects can vary by company, so it’s important to read each job description thoroughly to get a good overview of the company’s culture and remote work policies and ensure it’ll be the right fit for you before applying.

Part-time remote jobs

Part-time remote work is also similar to other forms of traditional employment. Part-time jobs will usually have you working 30 hours or less per week, and you’ll commonly have a set schedule or deadlines, collaborate with team members, and have a manager to report to.

Part-time remote employment is often a good choice for people with limited schedules, such as parents, college students, or those who want some extra work in addition to their day job.

Freelance remote work

Freelancing is much more common in the remote work world. This type of employment is usually project-based and will end when the project is completed. However, some freelance work can be ongoing when companies have consistent needs.

It’s often a top choice for creative roles, those with a niche specialty in their field, or business consultants who assist companies for a shorter duration of time.

Contractual remote jobs

Some remote employment may also be contract-based. During contractual remote jobs, you’ll typically agree to a set contract with a company where you offer your services for a duration of time. This is common in fields like IT, marketing, finance, or auditors.

For example, an email marketing specialist might agree to a three-month contract to prepare an email campaign to notify the company’s customers about an upcoming product launch.

How to find remote jobs

Now that you understand the different types of remote employment, let’s review where you can find these jobs.

Job search platforms

One of the best places to start is job search platforms. Some of the best options are traditional job boards like LinkedIn or Indeed. When searching, you’d type in the job title you’re seeking and then enter the location as “remote” to only see work-from-home options.

Freelancers or contractors should also consider other platforms designed for contractual work. Some of the top options include Upwork, Freelancer, or the LinkedIn Services Marketplace. You can also often find remote work opportunities on social media, such as Facebook or LinkedIn groups or communities on Reddit.

Growing your professional network will also help you land remote jobs. A great way to get started is by searching for virtual career fairs or online professional development groups in your field. Platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Reddit will often be good starting points for finding these.

You can also find professional networking events held in person in your local area. While it can feel nerve-wracking going this route, sometimes being able to meet company decision-makers face-to-face is a great starting point. Plus, you can still arrange to provide your services virtually if anyone you meet expresses interest in them later on.

Company Websites

Another excellent option is to visit the career pages on the websites of specific companies or the types of companies you want to work for.

For example, let’s say you specialize in social media marketing. You might find that many marketing agencies hire remote workers, so you could search for terms like “social media marketing agency” to find companies that offer services you specialize in and then check their career pages to see if they’re hiring.

Even if a company you’d like to work with doesn’t have immediate openings, you could still try to find the hiring manager’s email and send them a quick letter of interest detailing your abilities and asking that they consider you for any future needs they have.

Tailoring your resume for remote jobs

While applying to remote jobs, having a strong resume that expresses your qualifications is essential. Plus, you should consider some extra additions to ensure you present your capabilities to work in a self-managed virtual setting.

To help achieve this, consider looking at online resume examples or using a resume builder .

Some of the top resume skills for remote work include:

  • Teleconferencing platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet
  • Email correspondence
  • Project management software like Asana, Monday.com, or Trello
  • Data management tools like Excel, Google Cloud, or AWS
  • Team leadership and collaboration with co-workers
  • Scheduling and time management

Always try to tailor the skills you list on your resume to each job’s needs. Most hiring teams will include the specific software knowledge and abilities they’re seeking for the role in the job description, which will be a terrific starting point.

If you’ve worked in remote roles before, emphasizing those in the three or four jobs you include on your resume can also be a fantastic idea to showcase previous successes, especially if you have great achievements to reference with numbers to back them up for your work experience bullet points.

Lastly, you can use a resume checker to ensure you’ve done everything possible to optimize for success.

Acing remote job interviews

Most interviews for remote work will be conducted over a video call or phone call. When you’re accepting an interview request, it never hurts to ask the hiring manager any questions about the platform you’ll be using for the interview to avoid technical difficulties that could pop up.

Even though you’ll likely be interviewing from home, if it’s a video call, make sure you still wear professional attire to make a great first impression on the hiring manager.

Also, check your technical setup before the interview. Make sure your computer’s microphone and webcam are working, you have a reliable internet connection, and you’re in a quiet environment without disruptions. You can always do a test call with a trusted friend or family member to ensure everything’s sorted out before the interview.

Lastly, the hiring manager will likely ask you some questions that are unique to remote jobs during the interview to help them understand your capabilities in this type of work environment. Here are a few common questions with sample answers to give you an idea of how to prepare for this part:

Have you worked remotely in the past?

Sample answer when you have worked remotely.

Yes, I worked remotely in my previous job as a project manager with the A&A Design Studio. My role included coordinating meetings over Zoom with our 12-person design team and managing schedules on Monday.com. During my three-year tenure there, we had a 96% on-time project completion rate by working collectively as a team and ensuring everyone was on the same page.

Sample answer when you haven’t worked remotely

I haven’t worked remotely before. However, I have used many skills I’ll need to communicate with remote team members in my previous role as an account manager with Schreiber Foods. During my time there, I managed over 100 client accounts across the U.S. I held quarterly meetings with clients over Zoom, replied within 24 hours to all email inquiries during normal business hours, and managed performance data in Google Cloud. I’m confident I’ll be able to apply those same abilities successfully while working remotely as the senior account manager with your team at CVS Health.

How do you approach communication within virtual teams?

Sample answer.

I believe clear, concise, and quick communication is essential for success when working with virtual teams. One strategy I found to be successful in my previous role as the IT support specialist with Monument Health was checking my emails once every hour. It helped our team resolve computer errors 35% more efficiently. I’ve also found lots of success using project management tools like Asana to manage scheduling and project-specific questions in a dedicated place. I’m confident I could apply similar communication strategies with your team at the Grace Health Institute to keep your healthcare system running smoothly.

What types of distributed team tools or software have you used before?

I’ve used several distributed team tools in my previous software design roles. In my last job at Synergistic IT, we held weekly team meetings on Microsoft Teams, so I became very successful at communicating questions and needs in that setting. We also managed project-specific details on Trello, which helped us complete projects 45% faster after implementation. I know your team at Tilda Research also uses those tools, so my previous experiences will help me get up to speed with your established processes quickly.

Setting up Your Home Office

Setting Up Your Home Office

You’ve nailed the interview and gone through the steps to professionally accept a job offer . Now, let’s discuss setting up your home office to optimize productivity.

work from home assignments

Choosing the right workspace

The first step is to choose a suitable workspace. The ideal option is to have a spare room in your home or apartment dedicated to work.

However, if you’re in a pinch and don’t have an area you can dedicate solely to work, many professionals still manage to use a part of their bedroom or other rooms where they can fit a desk and office chair.

Just make sure whatever area you choose is quiet, and you can limit distractions while working during the day.

You’ll also want to consider the furniture you choose for your home office. You’ll likely spend several hours each day sitting in your office chair and working at your desk, so selecting a comfortable setup will go a long way.

Most professionals find that ergonomic office chairs are the best fit to prevent back pain or poor sitting posture. Some people also appreciate being able to stand up while working during parts of the day, so if that’s you, opting for a desk that can be raised for standing is a good idea. It never hurts to go to a furniture or office store to test different desks and chairs before buying.

You’ll also want a reliable computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Some remote workers enjoy having a dual computer monitor setup when they have a lot of tabs open at once, so that’s an option to consider if you have space for it. Additionally, if you do a lot of typing, look at different mechanical keyboards that are ergonomic and feel good to use.

Essential technology and tools

Along with having a reliable computer setup in your home office, you’ll need a lot of other essential technology and tools to be prepared for work. This is especially true if you’re a freelancer or contractor since you might not have employers giving you access to software or programs you need to deliver your services.

For instance, a freelance graphic designer might want to purchase tools like Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator to ensure they’re prepared to deliver services upon landing a client.

Some essential technologies and tools most remote workers should consider having are:

  • High-speed internet
  • Have video conferencing platforms installed like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet
  • Any project management programs you use, like Asana, ClickUp, or Monday.com
  • Professional communication platforms installed like Slack, Workvivo, or Loom
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Every career and field has unique software to deliver services, such as Quickbooks for accounting or Adobe Premiere Pro for video editors. Research the tools you’ll need for your career to ensure you’re prepared and ready to go.

Organizing your workspace

You can’t be as productive as possible if your workspace is a mess. Therefore, make sure you have an organizational system and clean up regularly.

Some tips to keep your desk and office space organized include:

  • Only leave out work items that you use daily on your office desk. Everything else should be set aside in a storage space after you finish work for the day.
  • Have a bookshelf for any binders or books that you use.
  • Put any loose papers into labeled folders.
  • When you no longer have a use for notes or other items, throw them in the trash.
  • If you have file folders, try alphabetizing them to quickly find what you need later.
  • Consider organizers like plastic bins or baskets for loose items around your office.

Many remote workers also find it helpful to personalize their home office to put themselves in a good mood while working. Some examples include pictures of your family, a desk plant, scented candles, or paintings that make you happy. You might even want to paint your office a color that will put you in a good mood when you sit down to work.

Ensure any decorations or additions to your office won’t add unnecessary distractions since that will be counterproductive.

Maintaining work-life balance

Many people find it challenging to separate work from their personal lives when transitioning into remote work. Here are some excellent strategies for maintaining a work-life balance while working from home.

  • Set and communicate boundaries: It’s okay to have times during the day or week when you don’t respond to work emails or aren’t available for calls. Communicate this to your co-workers, managers, or clients as needed to maintain a healthy schedule.
  • Take breaks: Are your eyes starting to feel tired after staring at the computer screen? Try dedicating a few times throughout the day when you take breaks. It can be as simple as taking a quick 10-15 minute walk or setting aside 30 minutes to have lunch.
  • Plan fun activities and stick to them: Having fun activities scheduled, like a dinner out with friends or a weekend get-together with your family, helps you maintain a balanced life and gives you something to look forward to while you’re working.
  • Don’t look at work materials when you aren’t working: Avoid checking emails or logging into work-related platforms during non-working hours. If you get work notifications on your phone, it can help to turn them off when you aren’t working to prevent disruptions during your time off.

Set goals: If you’re having trouble stepping away from work or taking time off, it can help to set goals that keep you accountable. For instance, you could make it a goal to end work at 5 pm every day to ensure you can have dinner with your family or plan an hour every day to spend on a fun hobby you want to get back into.

Productivity Tips for Remote Work

Once you have your home office ready to go and are prepared to maintain a healthy work-life balance, you should consider a few other aspects to ensure top productivity. In this section, we’ll review how to establish an effective routine, manage your time, and minimize distractions.

work from home assignments

Establishing a routine

Maintaining a consistent schedule is essential for remote online jobs where you’re likely to be more self-managed than if you were reporting to an in-person office every day.

A great place to start is your morning routine. Even if you don’t have a set time when you need to begin work, waking up at the same time each day and starting work at the same time will help you stay consistent and avoid missing deadlines.

Establish daily morning activities like making a good breakfast, taking a refreshing shower, or having a rejuvenating cup of coffee that will get you feeling your best before you begin your day.

Keeping a schedule for your workday activities is also a good idea. Tools like a Google Calendar, where you schedule important meetings or tasks you want to complete for the day, can be very effective in ensuring you stay on track.

If all your work assignments are due at the end of the week, try to avoid putting things off until the last minute. Instead, make a schedule where you do a little bit at a time throughout the week. It’ll help avoid stress or rushing through important tasks.

Time management techniques

When establishing a routine and work schedule, you can use a couple of effective time management techniques, such as time blocking and the Pomodoro technique.

Time blocking refers to scheduling your day and tasks into time slots. That way, as you move through your day, you know what you should be working on at all times and stay on task. A time-blocked schedule would look something like:

  • 8 am – 9 am: Check emails and review materials for the day
  • 9 am – 10 am: Team meeting
  • 10 am – 12 pm: Work on expense reports
  • 12 pm – 1 pm: Lunch
  • 1 pm – 3 pm: Review and submit payroll
  • 3 pm – 4 pm: Respond to emails and handle last-minute tasks

The Pomodoro technique is similar to time blocking, but the main difference is it’s centered around short bursts of focused work followed by breaks in between. The standard Pomodoro technique is based on intervals of 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break. Then, after the fourth interval, you’d take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. Here’s what that would look like:

  • 8:00 am – 8:25 am: Check emails
  • 8:25 am – 8:30 am: Break
  • 8:30 am – 8:55 am: Review materials for the day
  • 8:55 am – 9:00 am: Break
  • 9:00 am – 9:25 am: Work on expense reports
  • 9:25 am – 9:30 am: Break
  • 9:30 am – 9:55 am: Review payroll
  • 9:55 am – 10:25 am: Break
  • Repeat the cycle for the second half of the day, focusing on finishing tasks that were started.

One thing to remember with the Pomodoro technique is that some workplace tasks can disrupt it since not everything can be handled in exactly 25 minutes. For example, you might have an hour-long meeting with your team. In those cases, it’s recommended that you manage that task in the required time, take a break, and then continue with the usual cycle from there.

Minimizing distractions

A common problem many professionals face when working from home is that more distractions can pop up. Plus, when a manager isn’t directly supervising you at all times, it’s easier to procrastinate or get off task. Some tips to minimize distractions while working from home include:

  • If you don’t use your phone for work, silence notifications or keep it in another room.
  • Let your family or roommates know when you’re working so they don’t interrupt you.
  • Keep a schedule with a to-do list or goals for the day.
  • Take a quick break when you feel yourself getting distracted. Just taking three to five minutes to get up and walk around can help clear your mind.
  • Use rewards for positive actions. For instance, if you keep distracted because you want to watch the next episode of that show you’re into, make it a goal that you’ll complete a certain amount of work for the day and then watch that next episode when you’re done.
  • Plan for distractions. Occasional disruptions will happen, so plan how you’ll respond and get your mind ready for work again once they’re handled. Some people find it helpful to take a few calm, deep breaths when they sit back down to destress and clear their minds.
  • Ensure your workspace is clutter-free and organized so you don’t feel stressed during your workday.

Staying connected with colleagues

The final tip to maintain productivity when working remotely is to stay connected with your colleagues.

For one, just because you’re in a more self-managed role now doesn’t mean you can’t still ask for help. If you run into struggles, it’s still okay to contact your manager or co-workers for assistance.

Many remote teams also find it helpful to have regular meetings to ensure everyone’s on the same page. Even a 15-30 minute Zoom call once a week can go a long way to handle any issues or questions that have come up. A best practice during these meetings is to give each team member a chance to speak and contribute so everyone feels open to sharing.

Lastly, you can plan some virtual socializing for your team. Some fun options include:

  • Virtual lunches and coffee breaks
  • Play a fun game like Pictionary or Kahoot
  • Take a personality quiz and discuss the results
  • Holiday-related activities like Halloween dress-up or sharing your Christmas decorations for the year
  • Announce and celebrate team accomplishments

Examples of Remote Jobs and Success Stories

Now, let’s wrap things up by discussing some of the best remote jobs and success stories from people who transitioned to remote work in different roles.

work from home assignments

Popular remote job roles

Some popular remote jobs include customer service, digital marketing, and software development. Let’s explore the qualifications and some success stories for each.

Customer service representative

Customer service reps are the first people customers communicate with when they have a problem. Remote customer service roles typically include answering incoming calls, responding to emails, and sometimes managing virtual chat systems on company websites.

The qualifications needed can vary depending on the company and customer service skills required. Entry-level customer service jobs often accept applicants with a high school diploma and limited work experience.

However, some roles where customer service reps provide technical troubleshooting assistance or need in-depth knowledge in a field may require an IT helpdesk certification or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

Remote Customer Service Rep Success Story

A warehouse worker was feeling dissatisfied with his job. He was constantly tired and sore after long days of moving boxes and pallets of materials. And at the end of the day, he didn’t feel like his current employer valued his capabilities.

Knowing he needed to make a change, he started pursuing remote customer service roles that would be easier on his body. After several interviews and using resume templates to help showcase his qualifications during a career transition, he landed a remote customer service job with a popular clothing retailer.

They highly valued his experience working in shipping and receiving warehouses since it would give him essential knowledge to provide updates to customers about product shipments.

Today, he feels that his mental and physical health has improved since he can work from the comfort of his home while finding value in his work from a company that appreciates his skill set.

Digital marketer

Digital marketers plan and execute promotional campaigns that boost awareness and sales for products and services. Particularly, people in this field leverage promotional strategies through outlets like social media, search engines, and email.

The typical qualifications for a digital marketing role are an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in marketing or a related business field. Plus, you’ll need experience running and planning marketing campaigns with positive results as you move into senior or management roles while furthering your career.

Remote Digital Marketer Success Story

After working as a paid search and Facebook ads manager for five years, a digital marketer wanted to use the knowledge she’d gained to transition into running her own agency.

At first, she started reaching out to prospective clients and companies seeking freelancers to offer services on the side of her full-time job. She did this on the side for about 10-15 hours each week, and she gained valuable testimonials and results that would help her land additional clients.

After about a year and a half, she landed three consistent clients who were paying her more each month than what she was making at her job. So, she quit her job and started working full-time as a remote contractor.

At first, she offered assistance with paid ads for search engines and social media. However, she saw the potential to provide more services to help companies improve performance, so she hired contractors to help with email marketing, SEO, and lead generation tasks.

She’s now running a full-fledged digital marketing agency while working from home. While managing employees and maintaining her work-life balance has presented some challenges, she’s enjoyed it and found it much more rewarding than her previous employment.

Software developer

Software developers plan, program, and maintain computer programs for applications and business systems. To become a software developer, you need in-depth knowledge of coding languages, data management, and cybersecurity protocols. Most companies will require that you have at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field to get hired.

Remote Software Developer Success Story

A software developer had been working in a corporate office for over seven years. While he was good at his job and familiar with the company, he didn’t always feel as passionate as he could about the projects he worked on.

While searching for opportunities, he connected with someone running a startup during a virtual networking event on LinkedIn. The startup’s mission was exactly the kind of project he was looking to take on. They were developing AI programs that could assist in environmental research to improve water quality in underprivileged areas worldwide.

After officially accepting a job as the lead software developer with the startup, he began working remotely with their team since they were based in a different state.

While getting used to collaborating over video calls and instant messaging was a bit of an adjustment, he found that he enjoyed the freedom remote work provided. Not to mention, he now gets to work on projects he’s genuinely passionate about.

Freelance and contract work

A couple of popular contract-based remote roles are freelance writing and graphic design. Here’s an overview of each career and success stories from professionals in those fields.

Freelance writer

Freelance writers are typically responsible for researching and writing articles, blog posts, social media posts, landing pages, video scripts, or other business materials. Typically, it falls under marketing to help brands develop their voice and produce promotional materials. However, freelance writers can also work in journalism, write fiction, or produce other creative works.

Some popular skills freelance writers need are an understanding of SEO, research, editing, and brand development. Education requirements can vary by job and industry. Many jobs with education requirements will want you to have a bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, or related fields.

Success Story for a Remote Freelance Writer

After eight years in her field, an attorney was beginning to feel like her career was growing stale, and it wasn’t everything she hoped it would be. However, she felt a new interest spark when she worked on writing some new materials for her law firm’s website to describe their services.

Having heard about freelance writing in the past, she began to research companies in the legal field that might be seeking writers who could help produce promotional materials for their websites.

At first, she began providing services on the side of her day job. It was a fun outlet that still used her legal expertise to write educated content on complex legal topics many law firms handle.

After about two years, she realized she could earn a healthy income just by offering freelance writing services, so she decided to make it her full-time role. Now, she’s in a happier place, with her legal knowledge in high demand from firms seeking freelance writers and the ability to take a more creative approach to her daily work.

Graphic designer

A graphic designer is an artist who creates visual text and imagery for companies. Typically, remote freelance graphic designers will focus on digital artwork and promotional materials, such as creating brand logos, website graphics, or visual social media content.

You’ll want expertise in popular software like Photoshop and Lightroom to do this work. Plus, many companies will want you to have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in graphic design or several years of experience that can showcase your capabilities.

Success Story for a Freelance Graphic Designer

A graphic design student was attending college in the late 1990s, shortly after Photoshop had been released. He was used to always doing his work by hand, and initially, after hearing other students talking about Photoshop, he was skeptical if it would ever be able to produce artwork that made an impact.

However, that changed after a friend gave him access to a computer with Photoshop installed. After messing around with it for a bit, he quickly found it was a lot of fun, and this program had a ton of capabilities if you could learn to harness its power.

Shortly after graduating from college, he began taking on contract roles with movie studios and production companies. His initial work involved a lot of video editing, but later on, he transitioned into using Photoshop to create imagery that promoted upcoming films on websites.

As the years passed, he had to continuously refine his Photoshop skills and learn new programs like Lightroom and Illustrator to create in-depth graphics with brushing, motion blur, and color correction. He still makes a stable income today while offering freelance graphic design services to creative studios and companies producing marketing materials.

This is a great example of how you can maintain remote freelance and contract work long-term. The main thing to remember is that you have to keep up with trends and learn new skills, as technology is always evolving, to ensure your capabilities remain relevant.

Case studies and success stories

Here are a couple of case studies of professionals who transitioned to remote work, detailing how they handled common challenges.

Case Study #1 – Email Marketing

An email marketing specialist wanted to start offering freelance services while working from home because he wanted a more flexible schedule after his daughter was born.

He received his first couple of clients from professional connections who knew company leaders requiring assistance with email marketing strategy. While he began working with them, he also started gathering contact information for hiring managers at companies he wanted to work with and sent cold emails to them.

Over the next three months, he gained six new clients through cold email and had to start turning projects down since he was getting too much work to manage within his limited schedule.

To make his cold emails perform so well, he personalized them to each company and detailed how his services would fit in with their goals. This is the same strategy you want to apply when writing cover letters or resumes to ensure they feel specific to the company’s needs.

During the next four to five months, one challenge he encountered was the fluctuations in his schedule. Some clients no longer had work for him, and then he’d reach out to new prospects and suddenly get a ton of extra work. He worked as little as 10 hours some weeks when there wasn’t work and then 60 hours other weeks when he had too much.

To handle this obstacle, he started packaging his services into three or six-month contracts since that was the general amount of time it took him to plan and execute most email marketing campaigns.

Associating a general timeline with the work and having a contract signed with the company’s commitment to it helped him organize his schedule and know when he needed to do more outreach. Since then, he’s fallen into a nice routine with consistent work and building relationships with a well-rounded network of professional connections.

Case Study #2 – Project Manager

In March 2020, a project manager and her team transitioned to working remotely due to the effects of the pandemic.

The team initially encountered several obstacles while adapting the research and development process for new software-based products to a virtual environment. It was challenging for team members to communicate and collaborate on new ideas when they couldn’t just walk down to someone’s desk and discuss it immediately.

To facilitate communication between team members, the project manager started scheduling team meetings twice weekly. She also broke teammates into smaller groups that were all working on similar tasks while implementing Slack into their work process so group members could ask questions and collaborate in one place.

Ultimately, the transition was successful. These new changes helped facilitate the creation of two new software programs that generated over $2.1 million in sales. Even after they were allowed to return to the workplace, they continued maintaining a hybrid work schedule since they found that most project-related tasks could be completed from home.

Work from Home FAQs

Work From Home FAQs

The best way to stay motivated is to schedule your tasks and set goals for what you want to accomplish every day. You can even give yourself little rewards for completing your work, like treating yourself to a nice meal. Plus, reflect on your career goals and how your current work will help you reach them.

Several tools can help facilitate collaboration in remote workplaces. You can use video conferencing platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams for meetings. Slack is a great app for team members to message back and forth. Plus, you can set up schedules and manage project-related tasks on platforms like Trello and Monday.com.

Encouraging regular virtual meetings or team bonding activities can help keep co-workers connected. It’s also essential to plan enough social time outside of work. Make sure you’re reaching out to friends and family and continuously planning time with them to prevent feeling isolated.

When you have technical issues, one of the easiest fixes is to turn off the program or your computer and restart it. Also, review any instructions your managers might have provided for solving technical issues. If nothing is working, reach out to your IT support team, manager, or contact person at the company you work with.

One of the best moves you can make is to buy a desk and office chair that makes working comfortable and fits your body type. Also, ensure you have enough legroom, keep your screen at eye level, ensure your room is well-lit, and take frequent breaks where you get up and move around for a few minutes.

A good place to start is setting expectations immediately. Many workplaces find it works well to have dedicated times that co-workers set aside to respond to emails, meet, or answer questions. You can also implement collaboration tools like Slack, Trello, or Monday.com to ensure everyone’s on the same page.

9 Best Benefits of Working from Home (and 5 Potential Drawbacks)

person sitting cross-legged on dark green couch, holding coffee mug and smiling

When I’m stressed during work, I sit on the floor and do some belly breathing or throw on some music for a kitchen dance party where the VIPs are just me and my dog, Joy. I work from home for a technology marketing agency , so I can use these stress-relieving strategies as needed without distracting anyone.

Until recently, the idea of working from home was firmly in “must be nice” territory for most employees—the stuff of wistful conversations during post-work happy hours. The Pew Research Center found that before the COVID-19 pandemic, only 20% of people whose work could be done remotely were working from home most or all of the time.

Since then, the workplace has undergone a seismic shift. Global lockdowns forced all but essential workers to adopt remote work almost overnight. People scrambled to set up home offices and adjust to back-to-back virtual meetings and online collaboration.

As of February 2022, nearly 60% of U.S. workers with jobs that can be done remotely are working from home all or most of the time, according to Pew . And in a Muse user survey conducted that same month, 80.8% of the 4,681 respondents said they’d like to work from home full or part time going forward (with users under 25 being the most likely to say they’d prefer full-time in-office work).

Still, the reality of a 30-second commute from bedroom to home office (or dining room table) is more complex than the fantasy. There are significant advantages to working from home for many, but there are disadvantages and challenges too. Let’s look at the pros and cons of WFH so you can determine where you’ll flourish the most.

9 benefits of working from home

If these advantages spark excitement or “I could get used to that” thoughts, WFH may be a good fit for you. But keep your circumstances in mind—remote work isn’t ideal for everyone.

1. You get greater flexibility in your schedule and your day-to-day life is easier to manage.

With remote work, “I can sleep in a little later. I can get up and make sure the kids are moving along and I can go to the gym every morning,” says Heather Bostwick, VP of Marketing and Analytics at Education Dynamics , a higher education enrollment growth agency. Before the pandemic, remote work wasn’t an option for her; now her company is fully WFH and only maintains office space for monthly meetings.

So Bostwick can take care of the ceaseless laundry pileup that comes with kids during her workday. “I used to have six to eight loads of laundry to do on the weekend and then I’d be exhausted going to work the next week,” she says.

Flexibility shoots to the top of the pros list for me too. I can use my breaks to get dishes out of the way or cut veggies for dinner, which gives me more time to spend with my husband and the kids in the evening.

Some remote jobs may also come with flexible hours, which allow you even more control over when you get your work done in addition to where . This depends on your job and employer, but for me, WFH means I can take an hour or two away from my computer to go to the dentist or pop to the store during business hours. When my kids were younger, WFH meant I could make school events without much scheduling fuss, or easily pick up a sick kid from school with just a quick message to my boss.

My mom has also reached the age where she needs help managing day-to-day activities. I’m grateful for the time with her and for my siblings who share in the challenges and joys of caring for an elderly parent, but the stress of being in the sandwich generation is intense. Remote work helps me cope. I can take a break to meditate, exercise, or go for a walk. I can take a half day (rather than use a full day of PTO) to take her to a doctor’s appointment. Going into an office every day would have made this phase of life overwhelming—if not impossible to sustain.

2. You can ditch the time-consuming commute.

Your daily commute can compound or increase your stress levels as you deal with factors beyond your control, such as rude passengers, vehicle breakdowns, and traffic jams. A longer commute can also reduce job satisfaction and worsen your mental health. For many, a commute can be more stressful than the job itself. And if something goes wrong, that can make you late to work.

Plus, even when things go perfectly, even a relatively short commute of 20 minutes will take 40 minutes out of your day—that’s more than three hours a week. If your commute is longer, it’s easy to see how the lost time can add up. Working from home gives you back that time to use how you want. You could squeeze in more work—but I want better for you. We all need a break, so take that extra time to call a friend, play with your pet, hang with your family, or go out to your favorite spot for dinner.

3. You can complete more work tasks and assignments.

A pre-pandemic experiment conducted with the employees of a Chinese travel agency showed that a group randomly selected to WFH showed a productivity increase of 13%—which was attributed to a quieter work environment and more minutes worked per shift. And a 2021 survey of remote workers found that 6 in 10 reported they’re more productive working from home than they expected to be because they don’t have the commute and may be getting a better night’s sleep. At home, workers also gain back time lost to in-office distractions and interruptions, such as:

  • The noise and activity of an open office plan
  • That chatty coworker who has trouble ending conversations
  • Those impromptu meetings or coffee breaks that run long

That’s not to say that there are no distractions that come with remote work, of course, but for many people, the in-office ones are more disruptive to their productivity.

You’re also able to match your breaks to your natural peaks and dips in focus. “Working from home allows you better control over managing your energy,” says Rachel Wallins, founder of Accelerate Talent Management and a productivity and leadership expert.

If you usually hit an afternoon lull at 2 PM, for example, you can take a quick power nap or go for a walk to refresh yourself for the remainder of the workday. At an office, you might feel you need to ‘power through’ like your coworkers, but taking these micro breaks can increase work engagement and productivity.

4. You can be way more comfortable and cozy.

“I don’t miss pants. I don’t miss jeans. I certainly don’t miss underwire bras. Those are never coming back into my world. Never. Nope. Uh-uh.” says Bostwick, who is now a sports bra aficionado. Day-to-day comfort is personal, but working from home gives you choices beyond business or business-casual looks—especially on days that are light on virtual meetings.

Many people with disabilities, such as chronic back pain or mental illness, can also benefit from WFH gear and settings personalized to meet their needs. An employee with chronic joint pain, for example, may feel more comfortable in their ergonomic home desk chair. A worker with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), can position their desk near a window to get more sunlight. Someone who moves or fidgets often through the day can do so without worrying about distracting others.

For me, greater comfort means shifting back and forth between my desk and a portable standing desk, as well as working on the comfy couch in the living room with my dog in my lap. Among work perks , that’s priceless if you ask me.

5. You spend less money outside of the house.

According to a 2021 survey by Bankrate, 57% of workers said remote work had a positive impact on their finances. For example, I always spent a lot on lattes and lunches when I left the house for work, so I’m saving for sure now that I make my own.

Of course, individual spending will vary, but here’s where you might save:

  • Commuting: Whether you take public transportation or drive your own car—gas, tolls, and monthly passes for the bus, train, or ferry can add up.
  • Clothes: A few comfy leggings or joggers, a rotation of relaxed but presentable tops, and you’re good to go. You can get dressed up if you want, but you don’t necessarily have to have a closet full of business garb and professional shoes.
  • Food: Getting ready for work and making lunch at the same time is great, but not everyone can fit meal prep into their weeks. At home, you’ve got your own fridge with your own favorite snacks and meals at hand. Best of all, you don’t have to write your name on your chow to keep [redacted] from HR from grabbing your yogurt.
  • Childcare: This depends on your circumstances and your child (or children), but if you’re a parent or caregiver, you might be able to save money on daycare or afterschool programs.

On the flip side, you’re home more often which may mean using more power than you would if you were at the office, for instance, or buying yourself some home-office furniture—like a comfortable chair or desk. If you work from home, ask your employer if they offer any reimbursements to offset one-time purchases like that furniture or recurring expenses like the costs of increased electricity bills or the need to pay for a higher-speed internet package.

6. You can choose where to live because you’re not tied to a city or region.

Approximately 5 million workers moved between 2020 and 2022 because remote work made it possible. No longer connected with a physical office, many fully remote employees could keep their jobs and move closer to family, to a dream location, or to an area with a lower cost of living . (Maybe all three!) Just keep in mind that in some cases—like employers that want you to attend in-person meetings once a week—changing locations may not be ideal. You should also make sure to check that your organization can legally employ someone based in the state or country you’re looking to move to.

7. You’ll enjoy more creative control over your workspace.

At an office, you can add some pizzazz to your cubicle with plants and family pictures and knick knacks—to a point. But in a home office, you can make the space truly your own and ensure it  sparks joy for your workday. Go minimalist. Go midcentury. Go steampunk if that’s your style! You can also curate your optimal work environment. Set the thermostat just the way you like it. Choose your favorite music and set the volume to “nightclub” if that helps motivate you. Work in your favorite oversized chair with your legs over the arm. When your surroundings match your work preferences, you’ll be able to get more done.

8. It puts you in charge of reducing your carbon footprint.

With no commute, you contribute fewer greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere. At home, you can have more control over the environmental impact of your office. Turn off most of the lights in your home, use surge protectors, and set your office equipment to power-save mode. There are also  federal and state incentives to improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Remote work is not, however, the slam dunk for sustainability you might think. Researchers have found sustainability is not an automatic byproduct of WFH—but it can be an intentional one.

9. Remote work provides wider opportunities for diversity and inclusion.

WFH policies can open up more work opportunities to people with barriers to working in an office environment. Remote work can increase job possibilities and improve job satisfaction for:

  • Minorities who report greater comfort working from home. In a survey by Future Forum , Black employees specifically reported twice as much sense of belonging at their company and a 64% boost in their ability to manage stress when switching to remote work, in part because they don’t have to ‘code-switch’ as often and experience fewer microagressions.
  • Women who are often the primary caregivers of young children and elderly parents.
  • People with physical and mental disabilities or chronic health conditions that make it difficult or impossible to commute to work or spend the traditional 9-to-5, Monday to Friday in an office.
  • People who don’t have the ability to cover the costs of childcare or transportation.
  • People who don’t live near a company’s physical location. For example, someone who can’t afford to live in a major city or needs to live in a certain area due to personal responsibilities.

5 drawbacks of working from home

Now let’s look at the not-so-awesome aspects of WFH. Many of these may be manageable with some mindset and habit shifts, but be honest with yourself about where you work best—so you make the call that’s right for you.

1. It can be difficult to separate ‘work’ hours from ‘life’ hours.

The boundaries between your job and your life can become blurred when you work from home. According to research from NordLayer , remote employees in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada put in an average of two extra hours of work per day in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. As you may know firsthand, when work expands and seeps into your free time like this, it can throw off your work-life balance and accelerate burnout .

Working from home means work and life are woven together, Wallins says. But you can use your time wisely and establish boundaries throughout your day to lessen the effects. She recommends:

  • Scheduling 45-minute meetings (instead of hour-longs) and using the extra 15 minutes for breaks.
  • Taking an actual lunch break—away from your desk.
  • Keeping a consistent day-to-day work schedule that starts and ends at the same time.
  • Creating a ritual to end your workday. For example, Wallins cleans her office, shuts off her laptop, and then turns it face down until the next morning. Other possibilities include writing your to-do list for work the next morning, taking a walk, or reviewing the workday accomplishments you’re proud of (like a gratitude journal for work ).

2. You could experience isolation and feel disconnected from coworkers.

Loneliness and collaboration challenges were the biggest struggles for remote employees, according to a 2020 report by social media company Buffer. But while isolation from your coworkers may persist if you work from home after the COVID-19 pandemic , you’re not nearly as restricted as you were in the early days of lockdown.

So you’ll have opportunities to counter the impact of isolation by:

  • Making regular plans with friends and family.
  • Scheduling in-person meetups with local coworkers (if you have them).
  • Making time for in person or remote one-on-one or small group meetings with coworkers, which tend to be more relaxed than ‘all hands on deck’ meetings.
  • Pursuing a passion beyond work. Join a book club. Learn to knit or play guitar. Create a weekend canoe club. Whatever floats your boat.
  • Bringing more of yourself to work. If you’re comfortable, you can share your passions or other bits of yourself with your colleagues. Show off that sweater you knit. Play guitar during a coworker coffee hour. Start a parent or pet owner group within your company. You’ll feel more connected when you learn what makes your coworkers unique and share your authentic self.

Read More: Yes, You Can Still Make Friends at Work If You’re Remote. Here’s How.

3. You may experience the bias some remote workers report.

In a hybrid work environment, there can be bias against those who go fully remote. For instance, your bosses may not notice and appreciate your accomplishments as much or you may not be pulled into meetings that impact your work. You also miss out on spontaneous chats that can deepen workplace relationships, build trust, and lead to promotions.

How can you counter this? If you’re job hunting, ask companies about how the team communicates, how performance is evaluated and recognized, and what strategies or policies are in place to ensure all workers, including remote employees, have opportunities to advance. They should welcome the questions and have clear answers for you about their efforts. If you think remote workers get passed over for opportunities at your current company, you can raise your concerns, share the research, and advocate for more conscious inclusion of WFH employees with your manager, HR, or a trusted higher up.

4. You may lose the creative spark and speed that comes from in-person collaboration.

“We’re on FaceTime and Zoom every day, but you can’t have the same quick side conversations on a video call,” Bostwick says. In her experience, these impromptu interactions often generated the most creative ideas and problem-solving , and she noticed a loss of productive collaboration when her company first went remote.

To compensate, her company now schedules a full in-office day once a month for face-to-face meetings, brainstorming, and team building . “We had an in-person meeting and a colleague had a brilliant suggestion and within an hour we did a reorganization,” Bostwick says. “That would not have happened within an hour if we were all at home.”

Still, Bostwick says her colleagues are adjusting remote collaboration and creating a remote team culture . As they learn what works (e.g., one-on-one calls), they build on that. When they see what slows them down (e.g., back-to-back-to-back meetings), they adjust.

What do you need more of to be creative at work? Perhaps it’s occasional in-person meetings with your team, if that’s feasible. Perhaps it’s one-on-one online meetings every few days. What do you need less of to do your best work? Possibly back-to-back meetings or meetings without a clear objective. Make a list and consider talking with your manager to try to build a better remote collaboration strategy.

5. You’re surrounded by the temptations of home.

You’re on the last episode of your favorite streaming show. The living room needs tidying. Your spouse also works from home and you’d prefer to talk with them than respond to the 37 new emails in your inbox. You’re not surrounded by these pulls on your attention at an office. (Though there are other distractions to be sure, such as the loud phone talker or the chatty coworker.) There’s also less oversight—if that helps you stay on track in the office.

Wallins suggests consciously enjoying those temptations in small doses (say 10 to 20 minutes) and without guilt. That way you’ll keep them in check. She also recommends creating tiny rituals or events to carry you through the days and weeks so your structure doesn’t exclusively come from meetings and deadlines, which can be demotivating. Enjoyable, at-home rituals could be as simple as walking the dog, doing 10 minutes of yoga, or scheduling a lunch every Thursday with a local friend who also works from home.

“Replicate that trip you used to take with a colleague to the coffee shop at home,” Wallins says, “See people. Sit outside in the sun.”

WFH is here to stay and provides new levels of work-life balance and flexibility for more people. But the pros for some people are cons for others, and vice versa. If you imagine your ideal work environment and pursue (or advocate for) conditions that come closest—you’ll set yourself up for success no matter where you work.

What is a typing job?

A typing job is any job that pays you to type.

Typing may be the main skill required to do the job, or a crucial part of it.

We’ll cover 15 kinds of typing jobs in this article:

Data Entry Work

Virtual assistant, online chat jobs, community moderator, freelance writer, blog writer, transcription, translation, proofreader, ghostwriting, brand name suggestions.

Many of these typing jobs can be done on your own schedule and you can easily work from home. They’re ideal if you’re not looking for full-time work, if you have fast internet access and can type quickly ( or learn to ).

🤑 How much can I earn from a typing job?

You can earn anything from $1 per hour to $95,000 per year.

It very much depends on what kind of typing work you’re doing.

  • For jobs that don’t require any experience or a degree or certification, the pay will be significantly lower than specialised typing work.
  • Typing jobs can net you anything from as low as a few cents for micro tasks to as high as $95,000 per year for editing ( source ).

What kind of typing jobs can you do from home?

data entry work from home

Data entry jobs from home may require you to:

  • Or other micro tasks such as typing up receipts

The median hourly wage for data entry work is around $16.10 , according to US government statistics .

Though the pay depends on the company you’re working for. Working online as a self-employed data entry specialist usually comes with a lower rate.

$12 to $15 per hour is a decent rate for doing this kind of online work .

Do good work and you could land further opportunities with clients. Data entry skills can transfer to many other typing jobs that could enable you to raise your rates.

virtual assistant

Being a virtual assistant (VA) can involve tasks like:

  • Writing up blog posts
  • Administrative work
  • Social media management

As a VA it is your job to help your client with tasks they’d rather not do themselves. The sheer variety of tasks is often what is most inviting about this type of work from home job.

If you can offer various other services, like combining social media management with good customer service or understand newsletter optimization, then you can expect to earn more.

The average Virtual Assistant earns $19 per hour , according to ZipRecruiter .

Virtual Assistants can however earn much more if they have their own freelance business and do not go through third-party companies for their gigs.

⌨️ How can I learn to type faster?

Some jobs, such as transcription or data entry may require you to have a certain typing speed before they hire you. A good typing speed of between 50 to 80 words per minute (WPM) will help you stand out.

  • Find out your typing speed with this quick test

To increase your chances at getting typist work from clients, it is worth training your fingers to increase your typing speed.

Some tips below for doing that…

Take typing lessons

These free lessons from KeyBr can help you learn exactly where the buttons are positioned on a keyboard so you don’t have to look down while you’re typing.

This is called “touch typing” and you really should learn it if you’re serious about earning money by typing.

Practice with KeyBr every day to increase your WPM rate.

You could also get the classic typing program, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing .

Challenge yourself everyday

Try to type more words every day. If you begin by typing 50 words, try to increase it to 100 the next day, 150 the following day and so forth.

Take typing tests

You can take regular typing tests on websites such as Key Hero to improve your WPM. As you try to beat your score, you will naturally learn to type faster.

Play video games

There are many computer games that have been specifically created to improve your typing ability. The more popular ones include:

  • Typing.com Typing Games
  • Secret Of Qwerty
  • Epistory – Typing Chronicles

What personal skills do I need to be a typist?

The two main traits needed for these types of work from home jobs:

  • Having good hearing
  • The ability to type fast

For jobs focused on creative writing or editing , outstanding grammar, spelling and punctuation skills are much sought after. However, often there is no additional investment or qualification needed.

💻 What equipment do I need?

You cannot do any online typing job without a computer and a keyboard. (Sorry, your smartphone or an iPad isn’t good enough!)

For some work at home jobs like audio transcription, a foot pedal will greatly increase your working speed, as well as quality headphones.

(FYI, a foot pedal lets you pause, rewind, and fast forward audio recordings with your feet. This keeps your hands focused on typing so you can transcribe faster.)

High-speed internet is also a must and you may want to invest in specialised software such as StenoCAT for Scopists .

Remember: investing in tools that speed up your workflow will leave you better off financially in the long-run.

What Are Data Entry Jobs?

Data entry typically refers to taking hard-copy information, like sales receipts, addresses, or survey responses, and inputting it into a computer program. It could also include scanning documents, transcribing audio files, or coding insurance forms.

You don’t need a specialized degree or training to work as a data entry clerk, but you typically need a high school diploma and to be a good typist. If you work in the U.S. or with U.S.-based clients, you’ll need to be able to read English.

Membership organizations, law firms, medical practices, or sales organizations are among the types of companies that hire data entry clerks.

What Skills Are Required for Data Entry Jobs?

Though every data entry job is different, there are some basic skills you should have if you want to succeed in this field.

Computer skills

Because you’ll be working from home, all your work will be done using a computer. You don’t have to have expert-level skills, but you do need some basic computer knowledge.

Helpful computer skills include:

  • Typing. Since the majority of data entry involves typing, this is the most important skill you’ll need. The faster you can type, the faster you can get your work done and the more money you can make typing from home. The average typing speed is 40 words per minute, so anything above that is a good start for a data entry clerk. You can test your typing speed online to see where you fall.
  • Spreadsheets. Many companies organize their data in spreadsheets, so knowing how to use a spreadsheet is key to succeeding in data entry. There are two programs you should be familiar with: Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. Both have a lot of features. However, they’re fairly similar. If you learn one, your skills should transfer to the other.
  • Word documents. There’s a good chance you’ll be using Microsoft Word at some point. Knowing how to use the basic features of the program, such as formatting a document or inserting links, will give you an edge over other job-seekers.
  • PowerPoint. Although you’re less likely to use PowerPoint compared to Word or Excel, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with it.
  • All Google products . Due to their collaborative and cloud-based nature, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways for people to work online. Be sure you have a professional Google account and a good working knowledge of basic Google applications.

If you find that you’re lacking in some of the skills, don’t worry. You can find online courses and tutorials to help, and many of the programs come with in-platform assistance and troubleshooting.

Organizational skills

Staying organized is essential to your success as a data entry clerk. This is especially true when you’re working with a lot of data at once and need to keep things straight.

Some common organization skills you need might be:

  • Keeping files and folders straight. As a remote data entry clerk, you’ll be downloading and uploading lots of files and folders. Create a system for naming and filing everything on your computer. This will keep you from misplacing a file or sending a client the wrong data.
  • Attention to detail. If you’re not detail-oriented, data entry will be difficult. You might be dealing with long strings of data that can start to look alike. Data entry can also be extremely repetitive, and it can be easy to start overlooking small details. Paying attention to detail will keep you from making costly mistakes.
  • Tracking deadlines. Many data entry projects are time-sensitive or need to be completed by a specific date. If you have multiple clients or projects, it’s important that you use a calendar or other system for managing deadlines. Google’s calendar feature is a free option you can use for tracking important dates, tasks, and assignments.

If you have trouble staying organized, you can use a task management system like Asana or an app like Evernote to track different clients, projects, and deadlines.

Communication skills

Since you won’t be working in a traditional office environment where it’s easy to chat with your coworkers whenever you need to, it’s important to stay on top of online communication.

Some of the ways you’ll communicate with your coworkers and supervisors include:

  • Email. Most communication for online work happens over email. You’ll need a system to monitor your inbox and respond to emails in a timely manner.  A good rule of thumb is to make sure you reply within 24 hours, but some emails may be more time-sensitive. Make it easy to keep up with your emails by installing a mail app on your smartphone and setting up new message alerts.
  • Online chat communications. Some companies have their own online chat system or use a system like Slack. If your employer uses this type of system, make sure you learn to use it properly and check your messages as needed. Get clear guidance from employers or clients on when they need you to be available online.
  • Video conferencing. Your client or employer may hold team meetings or trainings via Zoom or another video conferencing platform. You’ll need to know how to navigate those platforms, as well as have reliable internet to access them.

Being able to communicate clearly and professionally, as well as understanding email etiquette, is also important in an online environment.

How to Avoid Scams

There are lots of people searching for good remote data entry jobs, and scammers know it. Unfortunately, that means there are lots of work-from-home scams posing as legitimate opportunities. Keep an eye out for scams by following these tips.

  • Avoid anything that’s too good to be true. If you stumble across a data entry job that promises to pay thousands per month for minimal work, it’s likely a scam. You can make some money, especially if you have experience in a specialized field like medical coding, but keep your expectations reasonable. Be wary of anything that seems too good to be true.
  • Don’t pay to get a job. Another scam involves asking you to pay money upfront before you can start making money. If a potential employer asks for any kind of payment, walk away. No legitimate job will ever ask you to pay a fee or pay for training before you start.
  • Be wary of training programs. Plenty of legitimate employers require you to undergo some training before beginning work as a data entry clerk. Be wary of employers that want you to work for free or extremely low wages as a training period. You may find that after your “training” period, you don’t get the high-paying work they promise. Get a contract or other guarantee before you begin any kind of work.

In addition to these tips, listen to your instincts. If something sounds off about a job or makes you uncomfortable, or if you’re asked for too much personal information before you’re hired, walk away. There are plenty of legitimate options available.

Alternatives to Data Input Jobs

Data entry is a great way to make extra cash from home in your spare time, but it’s not the only remote work available. There are other ways you can turn your free time into extra cash by working online.

Virtual Assistant

Another great work-from-home job is to be a virtual assistant. A virtual assistant is a bit like a secretary or personal assistant. The only difference is, you’ll work entirely online.

Virtual assistants perform a wide variety of tasks, such as making phone calls, sending emails, running social media accounts, and more. Many virtual assistants also do data entry work from home, but the possibilities are nearly limitless.

As a virtual assistant, you have a little less freedom in choosing when and how you work. You’ll be working directly for an entrepreneur or company to complete whatever tasks they need completed.

Want to learn more? Check out our guide on how to get started as a virtual assistant .

Bookkeeping

If you’re good at balancing your checkbook, managing your budget, or just enjoy working with finances, bookkeeping is a good alternative to data entry.

Whether you work remotely or in an office, you’ll perform tasks like invoicing clients, recording receipts, issuing payments, or processing payroll. You can do this job either manually or using bookkeeping software.

You might even use a Google or Excel spreadsheet, and with these, you can create an automatic formula that does the calculations for you, eliminating any possible errors you might make in your math. This helps make you more accurate and efficient and saves time, allowing you take on more clients. Bookkeepers.com offers a free class to those who may be interested.

Transcribing

Another way to make money with your typing skills is by working as a transcriptionist. In this position, you’ll listen to audio files and transcribe them to text. You might have to do some light editing, eliminating words like “um” and sighs or sniffles, but other than that, you just type what you hear.

Transcribers can choose jobs the jobs they complete, so they have the freedom to decide when and how much they want to work. Transcription jobs pay at least $5 per hour of audio, with some offering up to $25 per audio hour. To get started, you’ll need to apply and complete a transcription test. Otherwise, no special qualifications are needed.

If you’re new to transcribing, you can join Scribie as a freelancer. This will help you hone your skills and build a portfolio of clients in case you want to start your own data entry business.

Can You Really Make Money from Data Entry?

According to the  Bureau of Labor Statistics , data entry clerks make an average hourly wage of just over $16 an hour—well above minimum wage. Not all entry-level data entry jobs pay this well, so you’ll want to make sure you choose the best-paying jobs for your schedule and skills.

The amount of money you make also depends on how quickly you work. Most remote data entry jobs are on a contractor or freelance basis, paying per job rather than by the hour.
