Visiting Student Status

Students who do not participate in exchange programmes, have the following options to spend a semester at the University of Vienna:

Visiting Master Status

Visiting phd status.

If you intend to spend one semester of your master's degree programme at the University of Vienna, you can apply for admission to the master's degree programme as "visiting master“.

Please find detailed information here

Bear in mind that

  • you can participate in a course only if sufficient places are available;
  • you are admitted to the University of Vienna for only one semester;
  • you have to organize and manage any bureaucratic matters such as your visa, residency permit, living and travel expenses, accommodations, insurance etc. on your own; and
  • you have to pay the tuition fee according to your citizenship.

The University of Vienna welcomes visiting PhD-Students from all over the world. This is a non-degree seeking programme for PhD candidates coming to Vienna for a research stay. Visiting PhD-Students have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of activities (lectures, seminars…) at the University of Vienna. As a visiting PhD-Student, you are enrolled at the University of Vienna and can stay up to one year. It is not possible to receive a degree at the University of Vienna.

The Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences welcomes doctoral candidates who seek to come to the University of Vienna for a short-term research stay of up to one year.

PhD Program

The Doctoral Programme in Philosophy is a three-year PhD programme

  • open to self-funded, third-party-funded and pre-doctoral researchers
  • structured upon a number of compulsory activities (coursework, exposé, faculty presentation, doctoral thesis agreement, annual reports, thesis submission and defensio)
  • of 24 ECTs (15 of which must be in Doctoral Seminars)
  • see the  Curriculum
  • Our  StudienServiceCenter Philosophie  (SSC) administers the compulsory activities (coursework, recognition of examinations, Exposé & FÖP, submission and defense of the dissertation).

  • The VDP administers the doctoral training , a non-compulsory support for compulsory activities.

Structure of PhD Studies

Entry phase: year 1, compulsory milestones.

  • Submit your Exposé
  • Pass the Public Presentation at the Faculty (FÖP)
  • Sign the Doctoral Thesis Agreement
  • Participate in doctoral seminars

Doctoral Training*

  • Get fit for the FÖP at the  WIP Seminar
  • Participate in the Writing Evenings
  • Participate in Pragmatic Academic Series
  • Participate in the Center for Doctoral Studies workshops
  • Register an additional supervisor and establish a thesis advisory committee

* These activities are also open to doctoral candidates in the research phase (years 2 and 3).

Research Phase: Years 2 and 3

Compulsory activities.

  • Write doctoral thesis chapters or scientific papers
  • Deliver undergraduate teaching (where contracted to do so)
  • Complete the  annual progress reports

Doctoral Training

  • Organize a summer school
  • Organize an academic event
  • Participate in academic conferences
  • Undertake a research stay abroad
  • Apply for teaching opportunities

Final Phase: Year 3

  • Submit and review your dissertation
  • Defend your dissertation
