mind map presentation

Mind maps are great visual tools that can help you organize and link your ideas with one another.

Creating a mind map presentation can make way for a more seamless and coherent presentation flow and structure, which can help in engaging audiences better.

With this step-by-step guide on how to design a mind map presentation, you create impactful presentations using Venngage’s  Mind Map Maker and professionally designed mind map templates .

Click to jump ahead:

What are mind maps?

How to make a mind map presentation, why do you need a mind map for presentations, faqs about mind map presentations.

Mind maps are diagrams or illustrations with a core topic placed at the center from which different related ideas are generated.

In this  mind map example , the core topic is popular forms of marketing content, which led to other ideas like podcasts, blog posts, and webinars:

mind map presentation

As humans, we do not organize information in hierarchical order. Rather, mental associations arise from different connection points in our brains to help us navigate a vast pool of information. Mind maps work the same way.

Because of all the lines that build from its center, a mind map is sometimes called a spider diagram or webbing concept.

There are a number of ways you can create mind map presentations. You can use graphic design software, presentation software, or even specialized mind mapping software to effectively create a mind map.

How to make a mind map presentation on PowerPoint

Creating mind map presentations using PowerPoint can go one of two ways.

One way is through PowerPoint presentation templates . Luckily, PowerPoint and other Office apps now offer pre-designed templates. Simply search for mind map templates from the online template library then select and edit one based on your requirements.

The other way is through the SmartArt feature. This is much more complicated to do as there are no exact templates for mind maps in this feature.

mind map presentation

From the SmartArt menu, simply choose ‘Hierarchy’ and then pick the Horizontal Multi-Level Hierarchy layout. From there, you can edit the text and shapes until you create a figure that looks like a mind map.

Instead of opting for a PowerPoint mind map, use a more intuitive tool like Venngage’s  Mind Map Maker . It has a wide collection of professional  mind map templates  that are tailored for various industries and can be easily customized for your presentation needs.

How to make a mind map presentation on Venngage

To make a captivating mind map presentation with Venngage, follow these steps:

Step 1: Pick a template and place your central idea in the middle circle

By using a mind map template, you can directly input your ideas and skip the extra step of outlining a structure for your mind map.

The central idea is the main topic of your presentation. It is where the initial idea begins, and all the ideas that will be produced from the brainstorming process will be based on it.

mind map presentation

A lot of mind maps have the same layout in which there is a big circle at the center, like in the template above. This makes it easy to find where you’re supposed to put the central idea as well as all the other elements.

You can also place the primary concept on the left of the diagram with ideas radiating out towards the right.

Step 2: Brainstorm main ideas to create branches in your mind map

Next, come up with key points that are directly related to your main topic and put them inside the slightly smaller nodes in your template.

mind map presentation

These will serve as the main ideas or ‘branches’ that will make up the second level of information in your mind map.

Use the ‘Tidy’ feature from the Smart Editor to make sure that the nodes are evenly spaced and spread all around the central idea. Remember that mind maps are not designed to be content heavy so use only keywords or short phrases to describe ideas.

Step 3: Identify supporting details and connect them to your main ideas

Now, to put together the third and final level of information in your mind map, think of additional details that support your main ideas.

The main ideas or branches can be further explored and divided into more components or ‘sub-branches’ to help you examine all aspects of your topic, like in this example.

mind map presentation

Step 4: Connect all ideas together

Once you have filled in all the blanks in your mind map, it’s time to connect all the ideas for your  pitch deck design  together.

Add lines to connect the sub-branches to the main ideas, then another set of lines to connect the main ideas to your central idea. Do this until all elements are tied together, creating a single cohesive unit.

You can play around with the lines you use, like how this template used dashed lines to connect the ideas:

mind map presentation

Step 5: Enhance your mind map design

Finally, to finish your mind map, add icons, images and graphics to the presentation.

Add colors to the design from the color wheel or use the Venngage  My Brand Kit  feature to import your logos,  brand colors , and font.

Not only do visuals capture the attention of audiences better, but they also function as mental triggers that stimulate learning, so be sure to make your mind map as visually appealing as possible.

Here is an example of a well-designed mind map that utilized icons and color-coordinated sections:

Now all that’s left to do is to download your mind map. Venngage allows you to save your mind map as a PNG, PDF, or Microsoft PowerPoint file so you can easily integrate your presentation slides.

The most powerful way to communicate your ideas is by visualizing them. And creating a mind map for your presentation lets you do just that.

With a mind map, audiences can see how different ideas relate to each other. Which makes it easier for them to understand the information you’re trying to deliver.

This makes mind maps a highly effective and valuable communication tool for professionals like creatives, marketers, and project managers. Here is an example of a mind map used for project planning:

Create a powerful visual design in minutes with Venngage’s smart  mind map templates . Click on any shape in your diagram and use the ‘+’ or ‘-’ to add more shapes or delete one.

How do you make a mind map on Word?

To make a mind map on Word, you can follow the same steps in using the SmartArt feature, although this may not be the most ideal way to produce a mind map presentation.

How many types of mind maps are there?

There are currently many different types of mind maps, some more popular than others. However, here are the 6 most common types:

  • Simple mind map: A typical mind map in which main ideas or categories branch from a central idea.
  • Concept map:  Illustrates relationships between concepts and follows a more complex, hierarchical structure.
  • Flowchart:  A diagram that is used to visualize processes such as workflows and strategies.
  • Dialogue map:  Used for diagramming meeting discussions.
  • Double bubble map:  More popularly known as the Venn diagram, it shows similarities and differences between two sets of things.
  • Tree map:  Used for organizing and classifying data.

What are the benefits of mind mapping for presentations?

Mind maps are great for presentations because:

  • They are easy to create and easy to understand
  • Mind map presentations are more attractive and attention-grabbing
  • They promote visual order in your presentation design
  • They keep content concise and to the point

Mind map presentations also let audiences see the ‘big picture’ by showing your presentation as a whole instead of just a series of slides. They can help you give listeners a full learning experience by providing visual support to your lecture.

Mind maps can be used for different types of presentations, especially for  creating a pitch deck . A pitch deck is used to present your idea or company to potential investors. Using a mind map for your pitch deck allows you to display a comprehensive view of the components that make up your idea or business proposal .

A mind map presentation improves how you communicate ideas to audiences

Using mind maps is an effective presentation strategy because they can capture the interest of your audience and help them understand information better.

With Venngage’s smart templates, you can easily create outstanding mind map presentations.

Now you can transform your next presentation and make mind maps that your audiences will follow.

With many options to choose from, you’re sure to find a winning mind map template for PowerPoint that works for you. Creating a mind map is easier with a template.

Mindmap section intro

Want to follow along? Download the stunning Mindmap PowerPoint Template from Envato Elements now. Let's get started creating a mind map:

1. Choose a Mind Map Slide

The first step of how to create a mind map is to select your slide. A PowerPoint mind map template like this includes dozens of unique slides. Chances are, you won’t need to use all of them.

That’s the beauty of premium templates: you always have plenty of options to choose from. The trick is to find the mind-mapping PPT layout that best fits your specific content.

Updated mind map presentation

A good way to do this is by using PowerPoint’s Slide Sorter view. To do that, go to the View tab on the ribbon. Then, click Slide Sorter . You’ll see every slide in the deck all at once. It gives you a top-down view to choose only the slides you want for your mind map PowerPoint.

You can drag the thumbnails around and press Delete to remove those you don’t want. Only use the slides you need in your mind map template PowerPoint. It's how to make a mind map with a template.

When you’re finished, click Normal to navigate to the slide you want to customize. You'll return to a view of the mind map PowerPoint that only includes the slides you need for your design.

2. Customize the Mind Map Text

Now that you’ve chosen your mind-mapping PPT slide, it’s time to start customizing it. The text is the perfect place to start. Working on slide 5 here, you can see that the individual parts of the mind map PowerPoint contain text already.

Each of the colorful shapes is called a node. They combine to form the complete mind map. A node is a standalone idea for a key topic area. Think of it as one central idea that may branch out further in your mind map template for PowerPoint.

Creating a mind map text update

To add your own text, click into one of the text boxes in a node or elsewhere on the slide. Select the text inside. Then, type over it using your keyboard. It’s really that simple. Repeat as needed across your mind map template in PowerPoint.

3. Edit Fonts and Styles

Once you’ve added text, you can still customize the fonts! This is the beauty of a premium mind-mapping PPT template. They include beautiful styles and designs, but you still have creative control.

Font size mind map presentation

With text selected, go to the Home tab on PowerPoint’s ribbon. In the Font group, you’ll see a series of buttons and drop-downs. You can change the font size and style. Plus, you can add effects like italics, underlines, and more.

4. Remove Extra Content

The true value of premium mind map template PowerPoint designs is their flexibility. You don’t have to use every part of every slide.

Updated adjusted slide mind template PowerPoint

Click to select unwanted objects on your mind-mapping PPT and press Delete on your keyboard to remove them. This is how to make a mind map without unnecessary slides.

For example, you might want to remove one of the nodes in the lower right corner. To do so, click on the node to select it. Then, press Delete . The shape disappears. To complete the removal, repeat these steps to delete the gray line as well.

5. Change Shape Colors

Color is perhaps the best way to transform the look and feel of your PowerPoint mind map template. By changing colors, you can call out key ideas. Plus, you can match your mind-mapping PPT slide to your brand’s colors.

Shape color mind map PowerPoint template

To change a shape color, click on one of the nodes to select it. You’ll see a new tab appear on the ribbon: Shape Format. Click it, and then choose the Shape Fill drop-down on the left side.

An array of options is available. Choose from theme or standard colors, along with gradient and texture fills. Find a color you like, and click to apply it. PowerPoint instantly changes the color of your selected shape. Recolor elements until your mind map PPT matches your  brand.

6. Animate Nodes

Want to stylize your PowerPoint mind map template even more? Animations are a great way to do it. For example, you can have your mind map appear in a fly-in view. Let's learn how to make a mind map with added animation.

PowerPoint mind map template animation

To add an animation, click on your mind map to select it. Then, find the Animations tab on PowerPoint’s ribbon. Click on it, and you’ll see a gallery drop-down with a wide variety of options. Click Fly In , and watch as the animation previews on the slide.

If you're looking for more mind map presentation tips, we've got you covered. Here are five tried-and-true design techniques for creating a mind map. With these tips applied, you'll know how to create a mind map that resonates.

1. Make Your Mind Map Presentation Interactive

Creating a mind map can take many forms. That includes an interactive presentation where a node serves as a link to other slides. If each idea needs more detail, consider linking it to another slide in your presentation.

To do this, select a node. Then, use the  Insert > Links  menu. You can use  Place in This Document  to set that node as a clickable link to another slide.

Hyperlink creating a mind map

This technique is ideal for mind map presentations that include a great deal of detail. Instead of cramming everything on one slide, use hyperlinks to connect multiple slides.

2. Use Mind Map Template PowerPoints

You saw this brought to life in the tutorial section above, but I can't stress it enough: you should start with a mind map template PowerPoint download.

Mind map presentations take time to build. My view is this: why start from scratch? There's nothing wrong with using expert designs that already have the basics done for you. You just fill in your own details, and you'll have great mind map presentations.

Check out some top mind map template PowerPoint options below:

3. Use Color Coding For Meaning

In this tutorial, you saw that it's possible to shade your mind map nodes using the  Shape Fill drop-down .  But it's important to remember that color shouldn't be used at random. Instead, it should apply meaning and give visual context.

PowerPoint color shading mind map template

Every design decision you make in your mind map in PowerPoint is noticed by a viewer. With these subtle design cues, you can enhance understanding in your mind map presentation.

4. Add Audio and Video for Further Explanation

Here's the thing: mind map presentations only have so much room. They contain important content and ideas, but you can't always fit everything you need on the slide.

I've seen messy mind map presentations with far too much text crammed on a slide. At a corporate strategy session, I felt myself going cross-eyed while trying to follow each branch into the next one.

Here's a better idea for how to make a mind map: add multimedia for more explanation. A voiceover or video clip explaining the idea could be the perfect balance. Learn how to add audio in the tutorial below, then practice it with a mind map presentation.

What Makes A Good Presentation Mind Map?

What 3 things must a mind map have.

To be effective, a mind map must have three key elements:

  • Central Idea: Every mind map must have a central idea, which is the main topic or theme of the map.
  • Branches: Branches are the lines that connect the central idea to the subtopics or related ideas.
  • Keywords and Images: Mind maps are often more effective when they include both keywords and images.

How to Create a Mind Map in PowerPoint

A PowerPoint presentation is no longer just about pure text. Nowadays, fully written slides feel outdated while using pictures and other visual tools has become the norm.

Mind maps have become extremely popular. A PowerPoint mind map is a tool frequently used in the business sector to visualize complex content.  It structures key content in a really clear and straightforward way, making it easy for your audience to grasp and understand.

In this blog article, we’ll explain what a mind map is, how to insert mind maps into your PowerPoint presentation and how to best use them to communicate your content.

What is a mind map and how is it used?

Has this ever happened to you? You have a thousand ideas in your head but you’re having a hard time organizing your thoughts and communicating them in a way that people can understand. Later, all flashes of inspiration are gone and you’re back to square one. Fortunately,  there is an effective tool to collect your ideas creatively and present them clearly: the mind map. But what is it exactly?

startup image1

A map of your thoughts

A mind map – as its name implies – helps to map thought processes. In other words, it gives ideas a simple and logical structure that anyone can understand. This allows thoughts and ideas  be experienced visually .

A mind map is a diagram that represents concepts, elements, words or tasks that are linked around a core concept or topic. This core topic formns the center of a mind map. Think of a mind map as a city map: The city center is your central concept, and all the streets leading out from the city center are supporting, secondary thoughts.

Mind map image2

The mind map is a visually appealing model . Instead of long lists of monotonous information, a mind map adds colorful and memorable accents to your PowerPoint presentation and makes a highly organized and professional impression on your audience.

Mind maps are perfect for:

  • Brainstorming and visualizing your concepts
  • Presenting and communicating your ideas
  • Visually organizing content
  • Effective meetings
  • Simplifying tasks and projects

The theory behind mind mapping

The basic mind map design – a circular arrangement of elements around an image – has been around for centuries. But it was British psychologist Tony Buzan who made the mind map as we know it so popular today. In the 1970s, Buzan argued that the brain understands information best when it’s arranged non-linearly. A Johns Hopkins study confirmed his theory: students’ grades improved by 12% by using mind maps. But how?

A mind map is a tool that is designed to engage and stimulate your brain through its visual design . This makes it a highly effective tool to communicate information. What’s more, it’s also a logical note-taking tool.

Mind maps still follow the original design: a natural structure that radiates outwards from its center. The addition of lines, symbols, colors and images help the mind map evolve into an easy-to-understand graphic. The mind map structures information in a colorful, organized and highly professional diagram, making information more accessible and easier to remember .

The cerebral cortex is the information-processing center in the brain. It’s where all sensation, perception, memory, association, thought, and voluntary physical actions occur. These include logic,  colors, lists, numbers, imagination, words and shape. These abilities are divided between both hemispheres of the brain – the left hemisphere is responsible for logic and the right hemisphere for creativity. When both hemispheres of the brain work together, thinking is improved. The clarity, structure and organization of your thinking is optimized.

A mind map engages the imagination through the use of colors, lines, and words, effectively stimulating both hemispheres of the brain. In fact, a mind map could be considered as the ultimate thinking tool; it leads to maximum understanding through the use of both brain hemispheres.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Most of us have heard this saying before and it’s absolutely true.  Pictures have an effect on a large part of the abilities in both brain hemispheres, especially the imagination. This means that we often find images more moving and emotional than words, triggering a whole range of associations which in turn stimulates creative thinking.

This is where the mind map comes into play. Not only can pictures be used in the individual branches but the mind map itself is a complete image , making it an ideal tool to visualize presentation content.

Preparation is everything

Now that you know the theoretical background of a mind map, it’ s time to learn how to create a mind map for your PowerPoint presentation. Preparation is key:

We often have the best ideas at the wrong moment. You don’t have your pen and paper at hand, or your smartphone battery goes on strike again. Situations like this happen all the time and prevent us from getting our thoughts down.

It’s always a good idea to carry a small notebook and a pen with you. For a lot of us, it’s a quicker solution than a smartphone where you have to open the right app before you can begin to organize your thoughts. Getting your ideas down on paper is the perfect preparation for your PowerPoint mind map. Keep in mind that your notebook should be easy to carry with you at all times.

Create a mind map in PowerPoint

Now it’s time to start creating your mind map in PowerPoint.  Here’s a step-by-step tutorial.

  • Open PowerPoint and create a new presentation.
  • Start with a white slide. So, delete any preset text boxes, placeholders, etc.
  • Now you can choose between:

Using basic shapes

Let’s start with the use of the basic shapes. The Shapes option can be found on the Insert tab. Clicking on it will provide you with a wide selection of different shapes , e.g., rectangles, lines, arrows, etc. Select your desired shape for the central concept of your PowerPoint mind map and place it in the middle of the slide. You can then add other shapes around the central concept as key elements.

Use lines to link the shapes together and create relationships between them. The anchor points (also called edge points) help you to connect the shapes . These appear automatically when you bring a line end point close to a shape. Insert your desired text or image content into the shapes to complete your PowerPoint mind map.

Example: Go to Insert > Shapes and select a rectangle. Place the rectangle on your slide by holding down the mouse button and dragging it to the desired position. Click on the shape to continue modifying it. This will open the Shape Format options menu. You can now change the color or style of the shape . If you want to paste the same object onto your slide again without using these steps, simply use the shortcut keys Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V to copy and paste it. Do you want to connect your shapes? Go back to Insert > Shapes . Choose the appropriate arrow from the selection and follow the same steps above to add it to your slide.

Use SmartArt graphics

The second way to create a mind map template is to use the SmartArt option in the Insert tab. Click the SmartArt icon to open the Chose a SmartArt Graphic box. Now you’ll see a selection of different diagram types . Click Relationship in the left column and select Diverging Radial . Confirm with OK and the chart will be inserted on your PowerPoint slide.

mind map SmartArt

Edit and customize

Microsoft Office PowerPoint provides you with many formatting options to edit and customize your PowerPoint mind map . The Home , Insert and Format tabs provide customization options, such as changing color, using pictures or other visual markers.

Insert text into your mind map

Once you’ve prepared the shapes you can start inserting text or bullet points. To do this, double-click on the shape where you want to insert the text and enter your content . To adjust the font, size or color, highlight the text with your mouse and go to the Home tab. You can make the necessary changes in the Font group.

Summary: Mind maps are a simple tool to help your audience better understand your content

In this article we learned that mind maps have both a cognitive and visual advantage over text alone. Moreover, they offer a refreshing change from text-heavy slides, helping engage your audience and hold their attention.

Thanks to easy editing options , an effective mind map can be created by PowerPoint beginners and experts alike.

When gathering ideas, representing concepts, and accumulating information around a central theme, one can often find it difficult to connect different topics. Teams often struggle to put all that content together so they can summarize the process thought carried out by their members. Hence, a tool must be introduced to facilitate the experience – enter the Mind Map.

A mind map makes it easy to gather such content and organize information in an easy-to-read layout around a central theme. In this article, we will talk about the importance of using mind maps as presentation aids , how to build one using PowerPoint’s native tools, and how to save time using mind map templates for PowerPoint.

A mind map or mindmap is a visual depiction of concepts, ideas, or information designed around a primary theme. Such a visual representation is created from a core idea and visually expanded like branches of a tree.

Mind mapping is often performed during brainstorming sessions when designing new products, finding solutions, or gathering information or ideas. Usually, mind maps are created using keywords or short phrases. However, some mind maps also use images. The visual representation of a mind map always contains a central theme, and the remaining information is mentioned around it. Mind maps often use arrows or lines to connect ideas around the core theme. The Hand-Drawn Mind Map Concept PowerPoint Template below is an example of a conventional mind map.

Hand-drawn Mind Map Concept with Central Idea Slide Template by SlideModel example

It is quite likely that a mind map might need to be presented in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. Instead of creating a mind map in different software or in the form of an image to be imported to PowerPoint, it is much easier to use PowerPoint to create a mind map.

A mind map created in PowerPoint can be easily modified, and many customizable mind map PowerPoint templates make it foolproof to edit and expand the slides according to need. This gives the presenter the margin to make necessary changes to the mind map instantly and to modify the presentation slides to suit their needs. On the contrary, an image imported to PowerPoint or mind maps created in other software won’t be editable using PowerPoint’s tools. You should create it right before importing an image into PowerPoint. The Simple Mind Map PowerPoint Template shown in the image below is an example of how an editable mind map PowerPoint template can be handy in creating a mind map presentation.

Personal Development Mind Map example

Before you start with your mind map, you should consider the map’s central theme and the way you intend to gather and organize information.

Planning Your Mind Map

When planning your mind map, you should consider the following.

Focus on the central concept

You should narrow down the central theme for your mind map to avoid confusion and to make information gathering more focused.

How to gather information

If you aim to gather ideas for a new product, you might want to arrange a meeting with colleagues from relevant departments. You can opt to create the mind map during the meeting or organize information once the meeting is over. Similarly, if you wish to organize ideas for a PowerPoint presentation, you can use something as simple as a piece of paper or a document to organize information. It is important to determine if you need to organize a team meeting, gather information alone, or wish to collaborate periodically to gather information (e.g., by requesting suggestions via email).

How to note down information

You should ensure that at least one person continues to gather the information during the meeting. If you are taking notes or making a mind map alone, use the most convenient method to gather information.

Where to store information

Do you prefer making a mind map on paper and later converting it to a PowerPoint presentation, or do you find mind mapping software convenient? The information for mind maps should be stored in a mode convenient for you to use later to organize and create an illustration. Many also use note-taking apps like Evernote and Google Keep to gather such information.

How to organize information

You can organize information by considering subcategories beforehand or ensuring each idea is placed in a relevant box as you draw your mind map. A mind map should connect to the central theme and not simply branch out infinitely without a clear direction and connection to the core idea. Similarly, subcategories can be quite helpful to organize information better as you draw your map.

Setting Up Your PowerPoint Presentation

Once the required information has been gathered and the data is ready, you can begin setting up your PowerPoint presentation. You can consider the following when making a PowerPoint mind map:

Mind map elements

If you draw the mind map within slides, you can start with PowerPoint Shapes or SmartArt or use a ready-made mind mapping PowerPoint template. The mind map can be created by adding text and images to shapes and arrows to connect different concepts.

Mindmap example template for business plan presentation

Use short keywords and images

Since a mind map can be lengthy, you would want to use short keywords and small images to design your PowerPoint presentation.

Consider the length of the slides

You can opt to showcase your mind map as a single slide or across multiple slides. Sometimes, having one slide with the complete mind map and multiple slides focusing on subcategories might be useful.

Use of graphics and animations

You can use transitions, animations, and graphical elements that stand out and aid your mind map. For example, you can showcase parts of the map with a mouse click. You can gradually reveal the core idea, followed by each subcategory, to make the illustration easy to grasp.

Testing the mind map visual: It is important to test the mind map slideshow to ensure it is easy for your audience to view. You can test the slideshow according to the platform you need to showcase it with, such as via remote meeting apps or on a projector or large LED screen in a hall.

How to Simplify Mind Map Creation

Mind maps can be as simple or as complicated as possible. You can simplify your mind map creation process by following the tips below.

Focus on the central idea

To ensure that you don’t deviate from the basic idea, creating a mind map that is cohesive and easy to create is essential.

Keep nodes limited

There can be several nodes that you can use when making a mind map, including major and minor categories associated with the central idea. You can keep your mind map simple by limiting the nodes. This can help focus on broader categories and avoid expanding the illustration beyond a manageable size.

Restricting node use in mind maps

Branch out in a hierarchy

The temptation when making mind maps is to branch out without a set sequence. By branching out hierarchically, you can avoid a confusing illustration at the end of the mapping process.

Use different colors

Using different colors to distinguish between your categories makes the mind map easy to create and read.

Use connectors

By using connecting lines or arrows, your map can be easy to follow and would help identify the relationship between different nodes.

Consider appropriate layout

Some mind maps might be best created horizontally, whereas others might be easier to read with a vertical orientation.

Below are a few easy steps that you can follow to create a mind map. While mind maps can be created using several apps, this article will demonstrate how to create a mind map in PowerPoint.

Step 1: Creating the Central Idea

It would be best if you started with the central idea to start your mind map. In our example, we used climate change as the central idea to create a mind map around it. In our example, we will build upon the basic concept of climate change and explore the variables around it. To start our presentation, we used an oval shape and added a text box to start with the central idea.

Step 2: Adding Main Branches

You can add the main branches of the mind map around the central theme to design your illustration. These primary categories can encompass the main theme you wish to elaborate on.

Defining the main branches in a mind map

Step 3: Adding Sub-branches

These can be subcategories tied to the primary branches to expand the mind map further. The mind map can be better organized by using main and sub-branches. As you can see from the image below, the sub-branches or subcategories are added next to the main categories, branching out the mind map like a tree.

Sub-branches in a mind map

Step 4: Connecting Elements

To connect elements, you can use lines or arrows. This is also a common method for designing mind maps. The lines can help show interconnectivity and how different map parts connect. In PowerPoint, you can use various connectors by going to Insert -> Shapes to select a line or arrow type for your illustration.

Connectors for mind maps

Creating a mind map using PowerPoint templates is a process that only requires a couple of minutes. We’ll outline the steps here.

Step 1: Select a Mind Map PowerPoint Template

From the vast collection of products SlideModel has, you can find a mind map slide deck that will suit your needs.

Remember, most of these templates are also compatible with Google Slides (the only effects that may not work are some special shadows or animation effects that lack compatibility with Google Slides available tools).

Step 2: Edit the Template

After you select and download the template, we can start to customize its placeholder areas. Add the text, images, or other media sources required to represent your ideas in the editable areas.

Step 3: Define the Output Format for the Mind Map

Now that the mind map is completed choose whether this will be represented as a slide inside a slide deck (if that’s the case, it will have to match the color theme), a printable (for meetings), or a deliverable (PDF handout, brochure, etc.).

Font size will be determined by the final output of your mind map, as sizes below 18px won’t be visible on large screens.

Choosing Colors and Fonts

Consider giving different colors to the mind map according to nodes. You can use different colors for the main theme, main branches, and sub-branches. Similarly, you should consider fonts that stand out with your design.

Defining the color scheme of a mind map

Arranging and Aligning Elements

The elements in your map should be arranged and aligned hierarchically or at least easily understood by the audience. It can be easy to lose track of the central idea and expand your map beyond its original scope. This is why it is important to remain focused on the main theme and to branch out logically to avoid overcrowding the mind map.

Color layout and hierarchy of the mind map

Customizing the Mind Map’s Design

To customize the mind map design, you can add photos, text, and other design elements to highlight key areas and to make the mind map self-explanatory. The idea should be to construct a cohesive-looking illustration that is not only easy to follow but can also help convey the message to the viewer. Mind maps are supposed to be thought-provoking. This is why your design should have elements that can make the viewer think about the key concept and, if necessary, contribute to their ideas.

Inserting Text

If you’re using PowerPoint to create a mind map, add a text box to add labels for nodes and any accompanying text you might need to add. You can do this via Insert -> Text Box .

How to add a text box to a mind map

When inserting text in a mind map, consider using short keywords or phrases to avoid making the map unmanageable or difficult to follow.

Incorporating Images and Icons

You can incorporate appropriate images and icons to make your mind map more visually appealing. Sometimes, these can also be used to replace text. PowerPoint provides several options to add images via Insert -> Pictures . This includes images from your device, stock images provided by Office, and online images via Bing.

You can also incorporate icons provided by Office via Insert -> Icons to add icons from other sources online by inserting them as images. PowerPoint also provides cutout people, illustrations, and cartoon people that you can incorporate into your presentation slides to create your map. Alternatively, you can check high-quality icons for PowerPoint created by SlideModel.

Structuring and Organizing Content

To make your mind map cohesive, you should ensure that you place your nodes in a manner that suits the overall layout and merges with their respective categories and subcategories. The branching out of nodes should be carefully crafted so fewer nodes can convey more information.

Structure of a mind map

Creating Hyperlinks

Interactivity in presentations can be quite helpful in switching between content slides. If you have more than one slide, you can connect slides to nodes to switch to more detail regarding a topic on a different slide. For example, by switching on a node about a subtopic, e.g., ‘forests,’ you can move on to a slide with more detailed information regarding deforestation, wildfires, rapid urbanization, etc. To link these slides, go to Insert -> Insert Link in PowerPoint.

Inserting a hyperlink to a mind map

You can also hyperlink the content to other resources, such as a document or website, or instantly create a new document to link.

Link to an existing slide in a mind map

The hyperlinks you add can be inserted into text, images, shapes, etc. Hyperlinks can greatly enhance interactivity and make it easier to switch between your presentations.

Hyperlink to website in a mind map

Using Animations and Transitions

Animations and transitions can help create PowerPoint presentations that are easy to follow visually. However, it is important not to use too many animations or flashy transitions to make that possible.

When adding animations to your mind map, you should pick subtle animations that can help reveal or highlight parts of your mind map effectively. After selecting an object from your slide, you can pick relevant animations via the Animations tab in PowerPoint.

Using Animations with Mind Maps in PowerPoint

The Animations tab provides animations according to Entrance Effects, Emphasis Effects, Exit Effects, and Motion Paths. You can select an animation from any of these categories. As the names suggest, the entrance and exit effects are used for animations for entering and exiting the animated sequence, whereas Emphasis Effects are used to highlight slide elements. Motion paths deliver an animated sequence, such as arcs, lines, loops, etc.

Selecting animation effect for a mind map built in PowerPoint

To edit the animated sequence, head over to the Animations pane. This can enable you to view and edit the sequence for your animations. Moreover, you can set the duration for the animation, enable it on click or with the previous or by sequential order, and set a delay time for an animated object.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

You can avoid some common mistakes mentioned below when making mind maps. These mistakes can be avoided using PowerPoint or another method for making mind maps.

  • Making a complicated mind map: Mind maps that are too lengthy or have too many words or images can be hard to follow. Use short keywords and keep your mind map as concise as possible.
  • Use of a single or too many colors: While occasionally this might not be a bad idea, using the same colors for the whole mind map can make it hard to follow. Also, using too many colors can be confusing. This is why it is important to strike a balance between the colors used for the main idea, categories, and subcategories.
  • Don’t ignore hierarchy: By making a mind map with no clear hierarchy, you can end up with an illustration that might not be easy to connect or follow.
  • Avoid visuals that are hard to view: Mind maps that are too dull or small can be difficult to view for the audience. Always review your mind map for the audience according to your chosen medium. You can run your slideshow on a projector or digital screen to see if it’s legible enough. Even if you’re using a printed mind map, assessing its visibility from a distance might be best. For printed mind maps, always use high-resolution images and high-quality printing material.

Ensuring Clarity and Readability

You can follow the following tips for ensuring clarity and readability for your mind map:

  • Use fewer nodes.
  • Use an easy-to-read font.
  • Don’t use colors that might look out of place according to your theme colors.
  • Use whitespace or light background colors.
  • Ensure the mind map is to the optimum size and does not appear pixelated.

Saving and Sharing Mind Maps

Saving your mind map .

To save your mind map, head to the File tab in PowerPoint. By going to File -> Save As , you can save your mind map to your PC, to a network location or specified path, and on OneDrive. When saved on OneDrive, you can edit and upload the document Live via an Internet connection. While PowerPoint provides a number of file formats to save your files, not all formats might be suitable for such a file. You can save a mind map in the following formats in PowerPoint as a viable file:

  • PowerPoint presentation file (PPT or PPTX)
  • Macro-enable PowerPoint file (PPTM)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint presentation template file (POTX)

How to Use Mind Maps to Create Presentations and Free Yourself from Endless Detail Tweaking

Feb 7, 2020

You got a task to prepare for the next week's team meeting. Your boss told you to be easy and need not spend too much time tweaking design details.

Just pick the right template and dump the text inside, easy peasy, thought yourself.

1 hour later, you were still adjusting layouts of the first section and wondering whether to change to another template.

If that sounds familiar to you and you hate wasting time on manually adjusting layouts. You are in the right place.

presentation by mind map

This post is one of the mind map presentation series. We provide 20+ templates in the this post .

Want to skip ahead of the “what” and “why”? Jump to the “ how ”!

What is mind map presentation

If you hop on Google and search "mind map presentation." You will find the results include creating mind maps in PPT, using mind maps to prepare speeches, and using mind maps as presentations.

But here in this guide, we focus on mind maps as the presentation medium.

Mind maps are tree structures made for note-taking and brainstorming . They are also called Spider Web or Idea Webbing.

A mind map presentation equals to a presentation-ready mind map . The nodes and branches are the slide content, the transitioning between branches is the interaction.

Why is this helpful

The strongest value mind map provides for presentation is the balance between "effort" and "effect" .

Comparing to other tools, mind map is not as jaw-dropping as PPT or Prezi can be. But with minimal effort, mind map presentations can reach an acceptable level of visual beauty and animation.

For casual scenarios like a weekly meeting or classroom discussions, mind maps are sufficient for presentation needs.

You may wonder why I claim mind maps require less pain to achieve "casual wow". There are a few reasons:

It is intuitive and quick to create and adjust

It's more than easy to create a mind map. Just Tab or Enter to add topics. Since changing layout is just a matter of drag-and-drop, you need not worry anything about editing when you should only focus on drafting.

Imagine you are using a linear type of presentation tool, the effort you need to change content across a section can be pretty frustrating. Also, since the structure is auto-generated, you need not waste time on aligning and distributing elements on the page.

Plus it is more streamlined between ideation and presentation. Since mind maps are helpful for brainstorming . And a mind map can show as your speech slides. So you need not consider how to transfer your ideas from outlines to a PPT.

It guarantees a baseline for visual design and animation

Most mind map tools provide built-in templates. Even if they don't. The form of mind maps gives a basic visual design for your thoughts.

Who knows how much time we put into making our slides beautiful! In XMind, we provide built-in themes and editor-picked mind map templates. You are free from the troubles of the visual designs of your diagrams.

In terms of animations, zooming-in-and-out is the most basic way of animations. In XMind 8, we provide walk-through and slide animations. I will unravel them in " how-to " section.

It helps audience distill the complex informations

In a 2017 mind map survey , among nearly 1000 responses, "distilling complex info" is rated as the #1 benefit by respondents.

Mind maps are non-linear. It has a better info-space ratio than linear graphics. Your audience can get a big-picture view within a small canvas. And they also notice the connections between nodes.

When it isn't helpful

Mind map presentations work well for providing information but lack the emotional or story-telling power. Also, the appearance of mind maps creates a bit of informality.

So mind map presentations work best for non-corporate, informative speeches. For example, workshop training and classroom teaching.

It also requires more buy-in if your teammates never heard of "mind map".

How to create a mind map presentation

The three main components of presentations are content, design, and delivery. During mind mapping, your mind map is both the content and design of the presentation slides.

There are many workflows of mind map presentations. We introduce a different workflow here, which talks more about slide development.

Step 1: Write down your goal of this presentation

Know your audience is always the first and most crucial step. It dictates everything to follow.

In the mind map, you can put your goal and presentation content in the same place. Put a box on top of the canvas, and write down your goal of this presentation. With the goal visualized, you always get the hint to stick to the goal.

In some cases, you can even write it in the format of the introduction. And start your presentation to your audience with the purpose of this speech.

Step 2: Map out the content

Put the title in the Central Topic. Use ENTER to create boxes of the same level. And TAB to add subtopics.

And now you have your first draft of content.

presentation by mind map

Best Practices

Use a delivery-driven approach . First, put down your ideas as quickly as possible. Then demo-present to yourself or friends before fine-tuning. This is a very outcome-oriented approach and prevents you from over-researching or over-optimizing in the early stage.

Keep points concise . Use New Sheet From Topic and Notes if needed.

Step 3: Create slides

In XMind, you have three ways of creating slides.

1. Implicit Slides (Available in every mind map software) . No actual slides created, just zoom-in and zoom-out. Close all the subtopics before the presentation, then extend the branch one by one.

2. Slide-Based Mode ( Only available in XMind 8 ). Frame select the area you want to include in each slide and create slides inside XMind.

3. Walk-Through Mode ( Only available in XMind 8 ). Go through every topic and focus on one item each time. Move on to the next box by arrow keys.

Step 4: Do a demo presentation

Now write down your time allocation for different slides. You can put down Labels on the various branches to remind you of the time allocation.

And start to present with timer. For a demo or even final presentation, you can use Zen Mode - a full-screen mode with a timer.

presentation by mind map

Adjust your time allocation and take notes on what you need to simplify or add.

Show the big picture at the start and end of the presentation . It helps the audience to follow your ideas better.

Step 5: Fine-tune your content and design

Now it's time to fine-tune the details.

First, based on the notes taken in step 4, organize the structure and select the best-fitted structure.

To grab the audience's attention, you can use Quick Style or Callouts to highlight important topics.

Quick Style

Use visuals to lighten up your slides . It can be as simple as adding emojis or stickers. XMind also supports GIF .

Try to have the best-fitted structure . One thing to start is to think about the relationship you want to emphasize. For example, if you're going to show a strong Top-Bottom/Trivial-Important connection, you can choose Org-Chart. Like the "Three Levels" branch in the following.

How To Create Better Presentations With Mind Maps

What’s the secret to a good presentation? Audience engagement. Research shows that 79% of people agree that most presentations are boring. A mind map presentation is more visually appealing and attention-grabbing than standard PowerPoint templates or Google slides.

Mind maps are a visual tool that you can share with your audience. Graphic aids structure information and offer an excellent overview of a specific topic making it easy for your listeners to grasp. You can also use a mind map design to help visualize complex content.

Learn how you can become a master presenter with the help of well-thought-out mind maps.

What Exactly is a Mind Map & How is it Used?

Does this sound familiar? You have a bunch of ideas in your head, but you’re having difficulty arranging your thoughts and conveying them in a way others can understand. A mind map is a visual design tool to collect your ideas creatively and present them clearly.

A central idea is devoted to every map. Mind map templates let you brainstorm ideas for your upcoming presentation, form a readable structure, add visuals, and deliver your thoughts to your audience. You can include a map presentation to a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or traditional presentation slides. The maps add professional, colorful, and memorable accents to otherwise dull displays.

Mind maps are perfect for:

  • Developing a pitch deck
  • Visually organizing content
  • Communicating new ideas
  • Adding creativity to Google slides
  • Simplifying presentations

Tip: You don’t have to utilize a map presentation in the business world! Creating a mind map can also help teachers and students relay essential information in the classroom. Get your creative juices flowing with over 100 editable mind map templates .

Visuals capture an audience’s attention and work as a mental trigger to help remember information. So whether you’re giving a PowerPoint presentation to your co-workers, bosses, or students, make sure your mind is as visually appealing as possible.

Below is a sample of a mind map that utilized color-coordinated sections to dispatch information.

Why Should You Build Presentations with Mind Maps?

Visual storytelling is one of the better methods to engage an audience. It doesn’t matter what you’re giving a presentation on. Colors and images can help drive emotions, promote communication, and motivate an audience to take action.

Mind maps are the ultimate visual storytelling tool. Maps create visual hierarchies and connections between ideas. So you can show how things relate to your central idea (no matter what it is) in a way that’s easy to understand.

Here are a few examples of when and where you can use a mind map during your next presentation.

Client Presentations

People give over 35 million PowerPoint presentations daily. Make yours stand out with an eye-catching map presentation. Business consultants, employees, management teams, and advisors use mind map presentations to relay important information.

Tip : Add colors and detail to display all relevant information on one single page.

Presentations for the Classroom

Creating a mind map is a fun instrument to promote learning. Teachers can use this visual design aid to help teach new subjects in a way that’s easy to understand and remember for students. At the same time, students can utilize mind map templates during project presentations.

Public Speaking Presentations

Talking to a live audience is challenging. Many people are visual learners and require visually appealing content to retain information. Whether you have a presentation at work or you’re a public speaker for a living, a mind map can enhance your speech’s impact.

What are the Different Types of Mind Maps?

There are several different kinds of mind maps. Some are uncomplicated, while others are more intricate. The type of map you use depends on your presentation. For example, if you’re creating a mind map PowerPoint, you may want to include a concept map that follows a more complex, hierarchical structure.

Here’s a quick list of the different kinds of mind maps:

  • Simple Mind Map : This is the most basic mind map where subtopics branch from the main idea.
  • Tree Map : You can use a tree map to organize and classify data.
  • Concept Map : Concept maps are great for illustrating connections between concepts.

The Advantages of Mind Mapping for Presentations

A good mind map design will let your audience understand the central idea or “big picture” of your presentation. You can include a mind map in your presentation slides or create one map for your entire presentation. Visual tools with colors and images help give listeners a better experience.

You can use mind maps to construct a PowerPoint presentation, give a speech, host a lecture, or solve a complex problem with your team. The options are endless. So next time you’re in charge of creating a presentation, try using a mind map to display your ideas, link critical concepts, and convey important information to others.

Why are mind maps great for presentations?

  • Online mind map templates are easy to create and easy to understand.
  • A map presentation is attractive, eye-grabbing, and entertaining.
  • You can use graphic tools to help others visualize your thoughts or ideas.
  • Use maps to keep presentations concise and to the point.

Effective Classroom Presentations with Mind Maps

If you’re looking for a way to create more  engaging and effective classroom presentations and maybe save some time while doing so, this article is for you. In this quick guide we’ll show you how to use  MindMeister  as a powerful alternative to classic and often convoluted options such as PowerPoint or Prezi. MindMeister uses the mind map principle to help students  comprehend and retain information better and offers numerous practical ways of utilizing and repurposing content both during and after the presentation.

Effective Classroom Presentations with Mind Maps

What Is a Mind Map Presentation?

A mind map is a diagram that uses keywords, colors, images and other graphical elements to represent information. When you create a mind map, all of its content is visualized on one single page .

The map’s subject is always located right at the center of this page. All related subtopics and keywords are arranged around the center in a radiant, two-dimensional structure and connected to it via lines.

A mind map about the book

A mind map presentation, then, is a dynamic slideshow that you create from such a mind map. Each slide shows a detail of the map, such as a branch or an individual topic. At the beginning, the end, and at key points during the presentation, you can zoom back out so the whole map can be displayed for the audience.

MindMeister Presentation Slides

How Does a Mind Map Presentation Work?

In a classic Power Point presentation, students are presented with a number of independent slides, one after the other, with no way of seeing the big picture . There may be a table of contents shown on the first slide, but a list of unfamiliar keywords and headlines is all too quickly forgotten.

In order to comprehend and retain individual pieces of information , students need to be able to place them in context and understand how they relate to one another . It’s the difference between merely collecting dots, and connecting them . Seeing all topics of the presentation laid out in the two-dimensional structure of a mind map helps students do exactly that.

How to Create a Mind Map Presentation

The best part about mind map presentations is that they are incredibly easy and fast to create . Do you remember how much time you invested in making your last Prezi look good? Or how time-consuming it can be to make your PowerPoint slides look a little less boring? On the other hand, you can create a good-looking mind map presentation in less than three minutes . All it takes are 4 simple steps :

1. Map out the content of your presentation

Tip:  Use keywords or short phrases for the topics in your map. You can add additional information in the form of notes, links, comments and even attached files without cluttering up your presentation.

2. Add visuals to your map

Visuals function as memory triggers, so make sure to add lots of images, icons and colors to your map to make the presentation as memorable as possible. You can upload your own images using the sidebar on the right side of the map editor, or simply drag-and-drop images onto a topic. You can also use different font sizes to highlight individual keywords.

MindMeister's Icon Gallery

3. Create the presentation slides

Now it’s time to turn your mind map into a presentation. In the footer of the mind map editor, click on the presentation symbol to open presentation mode . While pressing the CMD key (or CTRL key if you’re on Windows), click and drag  your cursor over topics in the map to create the slides. Start with the topic in the center, then create the other slides in chronological order.

How to create a mind map presentation in MindMeister

Tip:  Show the whole mind map  at the beginning, somewhere in the middle, and once at the end of the presentation to ensure your audience knows how everything is connected and related to each other.

4. Present your slideshow

When all your slides are created, click on the Start Slideshow button to play the presentation inside your browser. You can present to the classroom just like you normally would, by connecting a projector to your computer and projecting the slideshow onto a big screen.

Alternatively, you can invite students to the map (making sure to give them read-only access ) and broadcast the presentation to their screens (a great way to reach remote learners and support distance education!).

Check out this real-time screen recording of us creating a mind map presentation for a  book report :

5. Utilize and repurpose your presentation

Gone are the days when students had to study from those tiny hard copies of teachers’ presentation slides – trying to fit up to 9 slides onto a single A4 sheet to save money on ink, and adding their own barely decipherable notes to the sheet.

PowerPoint Slides

With MindMeister you can easily share your mind map presentation and enable students to repurpose it for their personal study needs, such as…

Real-time note taking

Export your mind map presentation as a .mind file and either send it to students via email or make it accessible for download in your shared cloud space. Tell students to download and import the file into their own MindMeister account.

During your presentation, students can take notes directly inside the mind map , adding details to the keywords as well as emphasizing what seems important to them. This way, they don’t end up with two sources of information (namely your slides and their notes), and they don’t feel the need to copy the content of your slides alongside their own notes just to make sense of them later on.

Add notes to the topics in your mind map

Real-time collaboration

If the goal of your presentation is to spark a discussion among students, share your mind map with the whole classroom, ensuring that all students have write-access to it. You can do this either by creating a secure link and sending it to them, or by inviting them directly via email (take a look at our guide about inviting whole groups of students at once). As soon as everyone is logged in, all students can take notes, add ideas and vote others’ ideas up or down inside the map – and all in real-time.

Make your map accessible to a wider audience

You can publish your mind map to make it accessible for all people on the world wide web . Public mind maps can be found through Google searches, are automatically added to MindMeister’s public map library , and can also be embedded into websites, blog posts and Google Pages. Embedded maps are interactive and map presentations can be played just like an embedded Slideshare slideshow. Give it a try by clicking on the play button on the embedded mind map presentation below:

What is a Mind Map?

Mind maps are diagrams used in a range of industries to help people brainstorm and organize their ideas. A mind map template can be an incredibly useful resource regardless of how complex the initial concept is.

Many people choose to create a mind map template to explore ideas at a deeper level and to help them form connections between a specific concept and its related ideas. Used correctly, mind maps can extend the thought process and inspire creativity, allowing you to discover new ideas as a result.

Differences between a Mind Map Template and a Concept Map Template

  • Focus on one central topic
  • Work better for quick note-taking and brainstorming

Concept Maps:

  • Deal with a variety of different concepts at once
  • Visualize concepts in a more thorough and detailed way

While both diagrams have useful features, mind map templates are a great tool for focused, intense study of a central topic.

For example, you may use a mind map template to study a particular aspect of a novel . If you are studying a novel in class, then you can create a mind map template for each of the main characters. The topics that would stem from each character could be their intentions, their appearance, key quotes, and their main relationships in the story.

How to Use Mind Maps

Mind mapping for students.

Mind maps are commonly used by students for studying or planning an essay. A mind map is highly customizable, meaning you are not restricted to a specific structure when brainstorming ideas. With this in mind, students at any level can use mind maps as part of their study routine.

A mind map is:

  • Useful for all subjects
  • Customizable
  • A form of note-taking
  • Great for brainstorming

When studying for an exam, you can edit a mind map template to organize information using branches that link to different topics. Mind mapping can be as detailed or as simplistic as you like, depending on what you are studying.

Brainstorming

You can easily add ideas as they come to you with a mind map template. For example, if you are copying your notes into a mind map template, perhaps a new idea arises. You can simply add this to the mind map template without feeling like it ruins the overall presentation of your ideas.

The visual layout of mind maps can help you to easily remember information. If you choose one section for a specific topic related to your main concept, then you can use the positioning of the topic to help you recall information.

It is also useful to use a specific color for different branches for this reason. Mind mapping is a staple study tool because of how the visual layout improves the recall of information.

Mind Mapping for Business

Mind maps can be used in business, either as part of a brainstorming process or as a part of a presentation during a team meeting .

Regardless of what your business is, you can use a mind map template to:

  • Help improve your marketing strategy
  • Brainstorm new ideas for the company
  • Focus on strategic planning
  • Train staff members on a specific process

Improve Collaboration Across Teams

The brainstorming aspect of mind map diagrams is favored by business people, as it can easily be used as part of a collaboration with a team. A mind map template is therefore useful when project planning or improving marketing strategy.

Brainstorming as a team can help to:

  • Increase creative ideas
  • Improve overall marketing strategy
  • Improve current features of the business
  • Allow a range of employees to have their say during a team discussion

Mind map templates can also be used as part of a formal presentation to help easily display ideas to colleagues, a team, or clients. Mind maps can also be used in online meetings.

Which Mind Map Template Should You Use?

There are several types of mind maps for you to use, depending on the topic you are researching. These include:

  • Multi-Flow Map

Whilst the key features remain the same for each template, mind maps are versatile tools that you can use for a range of purposes.

Spider Map Template

Possibly the most common form of mind map, the spider map template begins with the main concept in the middle of the page, with related ideas connected by branches, like a spider web. Spider map templates are great for brainstorming ideas related to a particular concept.

Benefits of a Spider Map Template

  • The branches structure is clear and useful for studying
  • Customizable with color and images

Spider mind maps give a simplified overview of a central concept, making them a go-to choice for students and researchers.

Bubble Map Template

Bubble maps will often use one word as the central concept, with related adjectives branching out from this. For example, ‘sun’ would be the central concept, with ‘yellow’ and ‘hot’ as words in the outer circles.

The bubble mind map template structure includes space for the central idea in the middle circle, with outer circles arranged for the related adjectives. Bubble maps are therefore particularly useful when writing an essay or planning a story, as they take one simple concept and allow you to expand this creatively into more specific or nuanced ideas. You can also add images to your bubble mind map template to customize the layout.

Benefits of a Bubble Map Template

  • Useful for essay and story planning
  • Helps to inspire creativity
  • Images can be used to add reference points

Brace Map Template

A brace map template is used for developing a deeper understanding of a specific concept, giving you a closer insight into one central concept. A brace map template allows you to understand how something works, particularly physical objects.

The structure of a brace map is still simple, however. You simply write the name of the object on the left-hand side of the page and draw the brace next to this, which you can adjust based on its related parts. Images are also useful to add to a brace map template, as they provide reminders of concepts related to the main idea.

Benefits of a Brace Map Template

  • Can expand knowledge of a specific concept
  • Simple structure
  • Useful for science and math-based topics

Flow Map Template

Flow maps are used present ideas in a coherent sequence. They are designed in a flowchart style, with one concept leading to the next using arrows. They can be displayed horizontally or vertically.

Aside from being a useful study tool, flow maps work great as part of a presentation to highlight a sequence clearly. This can be applicable to businesses when displaying a proposed strategy, or for students who are explaining a timeline of events.

Benefits of a Flow Map Template

  • Helps to sequence ideas
  • Works well for presentations

Multi-Flow Map Template

Multi-flow diagrams work best for establishing cause-and-effect relationships between a central concept and its related topics.

Multi-flow map templates are designed with the main concept in the middle, similar to most mind map formats. However, a multi-flow map will typically have the causes of this concept branching out from the left-hand side, and the effects of this concept branching out to the right-hand side.

The arrows in the mind map template will flow from left to right to represent a journey from cause to effect. This is a particularly useful type of mind map when researching historical events, novels, or scientific concepts.

Benefits of a Multi-Flow Map Template

  • Establishes cause-and-effect relationships
  • Useful for a range of topics, including history and science-based concepts

How to Create a Mind Map Template

A real benefit to using a mind map is that they are simple and free to create. Using a mind map template makes this process even easier, and allows you to customize the mind map to your liking.

You may wish to create mind map diagrams on a computer using Google Slides or a word processor. While this may be more time-consuming, the features of online tools are particularly good for a presentation with an audience.

You can follow the same steps for designing your mind map template, whether on paper or online.

Steps to Create a Mind Map

  • Choose your main concept This is the reason for creating your mind map. Perhaps you have to study a specific topic for a test or you have an important essay to write. Decide on your main concept to form the basis of your mind map. Most mind map templates will be designed horizontally to allow for more space, so turn your page sideways. You can then write the main idea in the middle of your mind map. This is usually inside a circle, but you can choose a different shape if you prefer. If you have chosen a different type of mind map than a spider map, then lay the main idea out accordingly.
  • brainstorm related Information Depending on your chosen style of mind map, the way that you map out ideas will differ. However, this is a crucial part of mind map creation, so be sure to choose your related ideas appropriately. If you are studying for a test, you can use past exam papers or lecture notes to help you decide which ideas to prioritize within your mind map template. In a spider map, the related ideas will branch out from the main idea. You should draw a line to link the related idea to the central idea. You can use a different color to represent different categories, perhaps writing the title of that particular section, or the whole section, in one color.
  • Add information to each section of the mind map template As you explore concepts further, you can add additional branches to your mind map. Try to add detail whilst keeping your notes brief. You do not need to write in full sentences, as this may take up too much space. Keep it simple but prioritize key concepts that you think are relevant to remember or present to your audience.
  • Use color, images, and curved lines Your mind map should be visually appealing, whether it is for studying, or for presenting to an audience. A mind map template is customizable, so you can add images and colors to help display your ideas in an engaging and memorable way.The lines that connect each section, often known as ‘branches,’ should be curved to help give you more space to write. Curved lines also allow for flexibility if you want to add more ideas to your mind map.If you’re a creative person, having a colorful mind map design can make each mind-mapping session a fun process. When I’ve suggested mind mapping to students, they often end up enjoying the process of mapping out their thinking because of the creative aspect of using different colored branches for their mind map diagrams.

Benefits of a Mind Map Template

You can download a free mind map template to begin mapping out your thinking. Mind map templates allow you to explore ideas about a concept and structure your thinking in a clear way.

Seeing a mind map template as a blank canvas can seem daunting, but the final product will result in an understanding of the bigger picture after a creative brainstorming process. You can print and edit a free mind map template to help with your study or research process.

Happy mind mapping!

This mind-blowing map shows Earth’s position within the vast universe

See the circle of galaxy clusters and voids that surround us in this map of the nearby cosmos, extending 200 million light years in each direction

This map shows the circle of the cosmos that surrounds us, extending to a distance of 200 million light years. At this scale, space is comprised of clusters of galaxies and voids, the latter being areas with relatively few galaxies. The Milky Way, at the centre, is part of the Local Group of galaxies, with the Virgo cluster our nearest neighbour.

Majestic spiral

The Milky Way’s spiral structure is dominated by two main arms called Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus. It also features a dense region known as the central bar. Our solar system lies on a more modest structure called the Orion spur.

However tangled the question of our metaphorical place in the universe, we can use astronomy to grasp Earth’s physical location.

Earth orbits the sun at a distance of 150 million kilometres and the sun orbits the centre of the Milky Way . Specifically, we are in the Orion arm, around 26,500 light years from the centre.

The Milky Way resides in the Local Group of galaxies. About 2.5 million light years away is our closest neighbouring galaxy, Andromeda, the largest galaxy in the Local Group. Right now, we are hurtling towards Andromeda at more than 100 kilometres per second; in about 4 billion years, the two galaxies will collide.

See full RNC roll call of states vote results for the 2024 Republican nomination

By Melissa Quinn

Updated on: July 15, 2024 / 5:23 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Republican governors, lawmakers and nearly 2,500 delegates are convening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin , for the Republican National Convention , with former President Donald Trump formally receiving the party's 2024 nomination for president during a roll call vote of the state delegations Monday.

The roll call brings to an end the GOP presidential primary, though it's been known for months that Trump would be the party's choice to take on President Biden in November. The former president clinched the nomination in March, after he secured the 1,215 Republican delegates needed to become the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

Trump announced Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate as the roll call was underway. Trump will also deliver a speech formally accepting the Republican presidential nomination to close out the convention Thursday.

With the announcement of Florida's 125 votes for Trump, delivered by his son, Eric Trump, the GOP officially nominated him for president. Eric Trump was accompanied by Donald Trump Jr., the former president's eldest son, and Tiffany Trump, his daughter.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is chair of the convention, announced at the conclusion of the roll call that 2,387 votes were cast for Trump.

"Let's make it official," he said. "Accordingly, the chair announces the President Donald J. Trump, having received a majority of the votes entitled to be cast at the convention, has been selected as the Republican Party nominee for president of the United States."

How does the RNC's roll call of states work?

During the roll call, the head of each state's and territory's delegation was called on to announce the votes of their state or territory's respective nomination for president. If a state delegation had passed when its name is called, it will be called again at the conclusion of the roll call.

Delegates are selected to represent their state or area at the convention, and most of those are bound to back Trump, as they're required to vote in accordance with the outcome of their state's primary or caucus. Roughly 150 delegates were unbound heading into the convention, since a small number of delegations, including those from Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota, were not required to vote for their state's chosen candidate.

Trump came into the convention with an estimated 2,243 delegates based on the results of primaries and caucuses held earlier this year, according to the CBS News Delegate Tracker.

What happens to delegates for candidates who have dropped out?

Though Trump cruised to victory during the primary elections, his former rival in the race, Nikki Haley, secured 94 delegates, according to the Delegate Tracker. Haley's campaign said she earned 97 delegates during the primary process.

But Haley announced last week she would be releasing those delegates and encouraged them to vote for Trump at the convention. State party rules dictate whether Haley's delegates are bound to her or whether they're free to vote for a different candidate since she withdrew from the presidential contest .

In Iowa, for example, Trump, Haley, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswaky secured delegates after the caucuses . But under state party rules, since Trump was the only candidate nominated at the convention, the entire 40-person delegation voted for him.
