Emancipation Day is celebrated in 1905 in Richmond, Va., the onetime capital of the Confederacy.
It goes by many names. Whether you call it Emancipation Day, Freedom Day or the country's second Independence Day, Juneteenth is one of the most important anniversaries in our nation's history.
On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, who had fought for the Union, led a force of soldiers to Galveston, Texas, to deliver a very important message: The war was finally over, the Union had won, and it now had the manpower to enforce the end of slavery.
The announcement came two months after the effective conclusion of the Civil War, and even longer since President Abraham Lincoln had first signed the Emancipation Proclamation, but many enslaved Black people in Texas still weren't free, even after that day.
That was 156 years ago. Here are the basics of Juneteenth that everyone should know.
First things first: Juneteenth gets its name from combining "June" and "nineteenth," the day that Granger arrived in Galveston, bearing a message of freedom for the slaves there.
Upon his arrival, he read out General Order No. 3, informing the residents that slavery would no longer be tolerated and that all slaves were now free and would henceforth be treated as hired workers if they chose to remain on the plantations, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture .
General Order No. 3 was the final execution and fulfillment of the terms of the Emancipation Proclamation. The people to whom this order was addressed were the last group of Americans to be informed that all formerly enslaved persons were now free. National Archives hide caption
General Order No. 3 was the final execution and fulfillment of the terms of the Emancipation Proclamation. The people to whom this order was addressed were the last group of Americans to be informed that all formerly enslaved persons were now free.
"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer," the order reads, in part.
It's perhaps unsurprising that many former slaves did not stay on the plantations as workers and instead left in search of new beginnings or to find family members who had been sold away.
"It immediately changed the game for 250,000 people," Shane Bolles Walsh, a lecturer with the University of Maryland's African American Studies Department, told NPR.
Enslaved Black people, now free, had ample cause to celebrate. As Felix Haywood, a former slave, recalled : "Everybody went wild. We all felt like heroes ... just like that, we were free."
When Granger arrived in Galveston, there still existed around 250,000 slaves and they were not all freed immediately, or even soon. It was not uncommon for slave owners, unwilling to give up free labor, to refuse to release their slaves until forced to, in person, by a representative of the government, historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. wrote . Some would wait until one final harvest was complete, and some would just outright refuse to submit. It was a perilous time for Black people, and some former slaves who were freed or attempted to get free were attacked and killed.
For Confederate states like Texas, even before Juneteenth, there existed a "desire to hold on to that system as long as they could," Walsh explained to NPR.
Before the reading of General Order No. 3, many slave owners in Confederate states simply chose not to tell their slaves about the Emancipation Proclamation and did not honor it. They got away with it because, before winning the war, Union soldiers were largely unable to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation in Southern states. Still, even though slavery in the States was not abolished until the ratification of the 13th Amendment, the Emancipation Proclamation still played a pivotal role in that process, historian Lonnie Bunch told NPR in 2013. (And the amendment did not extend to tribal lands.)
"What the Emancipation Proclamation does that's so important is it begins a creeping process of emancipation where the federal government is now finally taking firm stands to say slavery is wrong and it must end," Bunch said.
After they were freed, some former slaves and their descendants would travel to Galveston annually in honor of Juneteenth. That tradition soon spread to other states, but it wasn't uncommon for white people to bar Black people from celebrating in public spaces, forcing Black people to get creative. In one such case, Black community leaders in Houston saved $1,000 to purchase land in 1872 that would be devoted specifically to Juneteenth celebrations, according to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. That land became Emancipation Park , a name that it still bears.

" 'If you want to commemorate something, you literally have to buy land to commemorate it on' is, I think, just a really potent example of the long-lasting reality of white supremacy," Walsh said.
Nevertheless, Black Americans found a way to continue to celebrate and lift one another up. Early on, Juneteenth celebrations often involved helping newly freed Black folks learn about their voting rights, according to the Texas State Historical Association . Rodeos and horseback riding were also common. Now, Juneteenth celebrations commonly involve cookouts, parades, church services, musical performances and other public events, Walsh explained.

It's a day to "commemorate the hardships endured by ancestors," Walsh said. He added, "It really exemplifies the survival instinct, the ways that we as a community really make something out of nothing. ... It's about empowerment and hopefulness."
And there's reason to be hopeful. After literal decades of activists campaigning for change, Congress has approved Juneteenth as a federal holiday .
The 13th Amendment did not include Native American lands under tribal autonomy, where later treaties would negotiate the end of slavery there. Corrected previously on June 19, 2021: A previous version of this story incorrectly said that Black community leaders bought the land for Emancipation Park in Houston in 1867. The land was purchased and park established in 1872.

In 2024, World Press Freedom Day is dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis.
Awareness of all aspects of the global environmental crisis and its consequences is essential to build democratic societies. Journalistic work is indispensable for this purpose.
Journalists encounter significant challenges in seeking and disseminating information on contemporary issues, such as supply-chains problems, climate migration, extractive industries, illegal mining, pollution, poaching, animal trafficking, deforestation, or climate change. Ensuring the visibility of these issues is crucial for promoting peace and democratic values worldwide.
In the context of the world’s triple planetary crisis —climate change, biodiversity loss, and air pollution— dis-/misinformation campaigns challenge knowledge and scientific research methods. Attacks on the validity of science pose a serious threat to pluralistic and informed public debate. Indeed, misleading and false information about climate change can, in some cases, undermine international efforts to address them.
Dis-/misinformation about environmental issues can lead to a lack of public and political support for climate action, effective policies, and the protection of vulnerable communities affected by climate change, as well as of women and girls, as climate change tends to exacerbate existing inequalities.
To achieve sustainable development, it is necessary for journalists to report accurately, timely, and comprehensively on environmental issues and their consequences, as well as on possible solutions.
This requires a comprehensive strategy that includes:

All stories deserve to be told. But this one may be particularly decisive.
The climate and biodiversity crisis are not only affecting the environment and ecosystems but also the lives of billions of people around the world. Their stories of upheaval and loss deserve to be known and shared. They are not always pretty to watch. They can even be disturbing. But it's only by knowing that action is possible. Exposing the crisis is the first step to solving it.
That's why the role of journalists is crucial. It is through their work, their courage and their perseverance that we can know what is happening across the planet. They work on the frontlines of our collective fight for the health of our planet and our struggle for livable lives. 3 May acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics. Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint, or abolition, of press freedom. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the pursuit of a story.
Every year, 3 May is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991. This in turn was a response to a call by African journalists who in 1991 produced the landmark Windhoek Declaration .
The historic Santiago Declaration was adopted during the “Seminar on the Development of Media and Democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean” (May 6, 1994). It marked a new phase in promoting the right to freedom of expression and of the press, as well as the development and recognition of community media, independence, and pluralism of the media in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Windhoek Declaration is considered a benchmark for ensuring press freedom around the world. It all began at a seminar in Windhoek, Namibia in 1991.

When I worked on staff at a local church, we had a lovely, young, wise-beyond-her-years church secretary. I loved her understanding of people and the phrases she used to express that understanding. Once in describing freedom, she said, “Run like the gate’s open.” I found it both humorous and descriptive.
We had a beloved basset hound at the time named Elvis, who did run every time the gate was open, making friends with all of our neighbors. I was even referred to as “Elvis’ mom” for the many times I rang doorbells looking for our runaway pup.
“Run like the gate’s open” is an apt description of the freedom that some of us have experienced when released from some form of bondage, whether literal or metaphorical. I think of John Gillespie Magee’s poetic description of slipping the surly bonds of earth in “High Flight.”
Or persons in rehab who work for months, even years, to regain functionality in some particular way. Or those who make difficult but important decisions to leave an abuser, or embrace recovery to overcome an addiction, or practice self-care to improve their mental and physical health.
As we celebrate our independence as a nation this week, we remember how brave and thoughtful men and women championed the composition and adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, declaring independence from the rule of Great Britain.
And also the Bill of Rights, 10 amendments to the Constitution adopted as a group in 1791, guaranteeing human freedoms including that of religion, speech, press, the right to assemble, to petition, and to a prepared militia.
We are granted the freedom to own private property, to travel, to work, to marry, to raise a family, to be educated, to join a political party or a union or any other legal group. States can exercise certain rights in protection and support of their citizenry. There is the legal freedom for every citizen to experience equal justice and the freedom from being forced to house and feed soldiers during times of peace.
I am not a historian and feel uneasy even attempting to enumerate some of the many freedoms that we enjoy. The point is, we live where we have more freedoms than we can name, and it is fitting to have a day set aside when we are reminded of the many freedoms we are granted by virtue of our citizenship in the United States.
It is also important to remember that though these freedoms are theoretically the right of every citizen, with the underlying self-evident truth that “all men are created equal with certain unalienable rights” stated boldly in the Declaration of Independence, there are those who have systematically been denied equal access to these rights.
I think of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s State of the Union address in 1941 when he envisioned four essential freedoms, not only for the United States but for the world. In addition to freedom of speech and freedom of worship, he advocated for freedom from poverty and the freedom from fear, suggesting that this sort of society was attainable in our own time and generation.
More recently, economics professor and Nobel laureate, Joseph Stiglitz, writes, “A person facing extremes of want and fear is not free.”
What we know is freedom itself is not free. We honor Veterans in many ways, not just on special days but throughout the year, in recognition of the price they have paid. And we ourselves know that there are and must be parameters around the freedoms that we experience in any communal setting, lest my freedom becomes your unfreedom.
We must weigh the restrictions to individual freedom against the overall increase in human welfare and freedom that those restrictions offer. Like Roosevelt before him, Stiglitz is cautiously optimistic that widening the circle of those who experience freedom as we better understand its complexity is possible, though it will be a battle.
This week we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Acts, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964.
President Biden signed a Proclamation that reads in part, “That day [July 2, 2024], our Nation moved closer to our North Star, the founding ideal of America: We are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives. We have never fully lived up to that ideal, but we have never walked away from it either. On this anniversary, we promise we will not walk away from it now.”
It is the sentiment of many freedom activists that we are not free until all are free.
One of the earliest proclaimers of this message is Jewish -American poet Emma Lazarus, whose “New Colossus” poem is excerpted on the Statue of Liberty, and who in 1833 wrote in response to antisemitism: “Until we are all free, we are none of us free.”
Nelson Mandela concurs, “To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
Martin Luther King, Jr, echoes, “A piece of freedom is no longer adequate for human beings or for this nation.”
Many of us have had the sensation of running like the gate is open, the exhilaration of freedom, and it has been described and defended by the wisest among us as an inalienable right.
During this Fourth of July celebration weekend, I pray that we all will redouble our efforts to ensure that all those who live in our country will come a step closer to knowing, not a piece of freedom, but freedom in its complexity and richness.
May we all care about and work to ensure that individual freedom and communal freedom are balanced; that our personal freedom does not impose unfreedom on another. Happy Fourth of July!

Letter to the editor: rag-tag colonies defeated a superpower because they were flexible and motivated. just like we should be on election day..
The meaning of Independence Day never ceases to amaze me.
How a small group of rag-tag free spirits thwarted one of the most organized navies in the civilized world and created a country out of 13 colonies really illuminates my imagination.
It shows us that anything is possible with a burning desire to overcome great obstacles. We have built a company in a nation that makes opportunity possible for anyone.
The Declaration of Independence was the culmination of events that escalated tensions between Great Britain and the American Colonies.
While the colonists had “home field advantage,” they were at a serious military disadvantage, didn’t have enough funds for the fight, and had little experience — in governing or military strategy.
And yet, they not only survived, they won.
They won because they were flexible, inventive and motivated. Also aided by the French, and helped by the Native Americans, they carved out a new government that stands with us to this day.
Here we are, 248 years later, living with the same ideals that the colonists fought for in the Revolutionary War.
As we approach the election, we need to remind ourselves that the fight for what’s right is more relevant than ever.
