100 meters movie review

share news:

Subscribe to our newsletter, 100 meters: ms ‘ironman’ movie inspired by fantastic true story.

Ramon is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in his 30s. His doctor tells him that he will barely be able to walk, let alone run. But he decides to attempt the ultimate sporting challenge. To complete an Ironman race: 42 km run, 3,8 km swim and 180 km bike ride.

This is the true story of Ramon Arroyo, 44 years old, turned legendary MS athlete after his MS diagnosis from 12 years ago. His fantastic journey was recently adapted into a movie for the big screen: ‘100 meters’. The trailer with English subtitles can be viewed below:

100 meters: Giving up is not an option

The movie was launched in November 2016 and features accomplished Spanish actors. More information can be found here .

‘100 meters’ is running in cinemas across Spain and will also be available for the international audiences in early 2017.

The storyline was build around Ramon’s book, ‘100 meters: Giving up is not an option’.

Both Ramon’s real life story and the movie it inspired were supported and promoted by the Spanish MS societies  EME  and AEDEM .

Ramon for EMSP: ‘I am very respectful to those disabled by MS’

EMSP wrote about Ramon Arroyo in our newsletter from March 2014  [on page 5].

He told us that MS is different for each person affected and recommended that those newly diagnosed seek personalised care and treatment.

Ramon added it is extremely important that people with MS take up sports to the best of their abilities:

“I am very respectful to those disabled by MS, but if just one person with multiple sclerosis takes up any kind of exercise after hearing my story, I will be the happiest man on earth”

A dedicated MS advocate

Despite his health issues, Ramon continues to compete in endurance races.

While sharing his experiences he also raises awareness of MS on his blog and Twitter account . And during interviews with national media.

An inspiring story with a great lesson. Multiple sclerosis is one of those weird diseases. You may suffer from it in a frequent basis or you can go years without remembering you live with this disease. One minute you're your normal self, next minute and you cannot see or move your arm, feel among other symptoms. It's easy to lose all hope, but stories like these remind me that in the worst moments of life, one can fight and regain some of the control one used to have.

But this film portrays this story in a overly sentimental way and begs us to feel sorry for the main character. It is the typical biopic that uses a great story and reduces it to the common storytelling format.

I did not expect to see Maria de Medeiros popping up during the film.

I had no intentions of checking this movie in theaters, because frankly it looked like a sappy flick about how the human spirit magically conquers all obstacles, in this case using sports against a degenerative disease. And i enjoy sappy, sometimes a little more often than i care to admit, but this particular one, looked a little too on the nose from the trailer. It's inspired on a true story about a guy diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and his quest to do an ironman triathlon (3.80 km swim, a 180 km bicycle ride and a marathon 42 km run) against all odds. Anyway, i decided to give it a try due to the praises of a couple of fellow letterboxders…

"Todos temos um doença degenerativa chamada vida"

É aquela classica história de superação, de ir contra a maré, de superar os diagnósticos, o que poderia fazer um filme sem muita identidade e cair no esquecimento e, de fato, ele não é muito memorável, mas pegou de uma maneira que eu não esperava. A interação entre o sogro e o genro é muito legal, as vezes, dão uma exagerada, mas o carisma dos atores compensa.

" We all have a degenerative disease called life"

It's that classic story of overcoming, of going against the tide, of overcoming diagnoses, which could make a film without much identity and fall into oblivion and, in fact, it's not very memorable, but it caught on in a way that I didn't. expected. The interaction between the father-in-law and the son-in-law is very cool, sometimes they seem exaggerated, but the charisma of the actors makes up for it.

I’m giving it two because it's based on true events, if not, this is the most artificial thing I've ever seen. I hate the script. A lot. But idk it gives you hope and from time to time it makes you laugh (although they try to make you do it very forcefully).

Warm, witty true story avoids all the pitfalls of inspiration porn.

As part of the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival

It’s easy to bandy about the phrase “inspiration porn” when it comes to tales of someone overcoming a disability or showing incredible bravery in the face of debilitation.  It’s a particular subsection of the classic underdog tale that usually twists the faces of cynical critics into eruptions of sneering.  Add a true-story element to the mix and there’s the added suspicion of exploitation.  It is therefore to the credit of writer/ director Marcel Barrena, and some great performances, that 100 Meters not only conquers these concerns, but fully earns the unashamed naked catharsis at which it aims.

When Ramón ( Dani Rovira ) is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in his thirties, he’s told by a jaded fellow sufferer that in a year he won’t be able to walk 100 metres.  Motivated by these words he resolves to complete an iron man challenge; 3.8km swimming, 180km cycling, and a marathon as the cherry on the cake.  He’s supported by his loving family and boosted by an eccentric training schedule devised by his antagonistic father-in-law.

100 Meters is a film of few surprises but endless reserves of warmth and wit.  Rovira and Karra Elejalde who plays Manalo, Ramón’s father in law, are both known for their comedic roles in Spain and it shows. The odd-couple relationship between them is bracing, and there are huge echoes of Rocky in the training scenes.  It’s a touchingly rough-edged examination of stoic masculinity and a slow emergence from self-imposed isolation; one caused by the despair of an illness, and the older man by the death of a spouse.

It’s the abrasive humour, liberally peppered with profanities throughout, that effectively grits the slippery slope towards mawkishness and false sentiment.  There are the expected moments of self-pity and bumps in the road, but there is always another bruisingly amusing exchange around the corner, or a cute interjection from Ramón’s almost unbearably sweet moppet of a son.

If there are missteps, they come in occasional lags in the pace.  Even if the depiction of muscular sclerosis is admirably well depicted (using real sufferers in supporting roles), there is at least one character who serves as emotional padding.  Also, the relationship between the two men comes at the expense of Alexandra Jiménez as Inma, the wife of Ramón.  Her claims that his illness is, “a diagnosis for both of them,” is undermined by her being sidelined for much of the film.  This is a minor flaw however, for the film does so much correct that when the family comes together for the final, euphoric moment of triumph, all is instantly forgiven and it’s impossible not to be swept joyously along.

A film that could have the wide-reaching appeal of  Olivier Nakache and   Eric Toledano’s Intouchables ,  which dealt with similar themes,  100 Meters is genuinely inspirational, with a real message of empowerment.

Truth is stranger than fiction, 100 meters : movie review.

100 meters movie review

100 meters is a based on a true story of a man named Ramon who is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He is told that he will be able to even walk 100 meters in the next one year. Determined to prove this wrong, he takes up the challenge of doing the grueling Ironman race which involves 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles biking and 26.2 miles running.

With the help of his father in law with whom he initially shares a shaky relationship with, he begins to train relentlessly. Ramon faces challenges on the way and is almost pushed to the brink of being bed ridden. He overcomes every hurdle with grit and a positive frame of mind. It remains to be seen if he actually finishes the race.

This movie struck a chord in many ways. A triathlon is not just a race-its a humbling journey which alters your life forever. The training period is especially a challenging one as it demands a lot out of you. The film showcases the importance of family support in achieving your goal. It also imparts a vital lesson of conditioning your mind-which is the biggest factor in helping you overcome any sort of challenge. If your mind is raring to do, the body has no choice but to obey. Factors like fear and self doubt is what cripples the mind more than anything.

100 meters also delves into the depth of the characters. The father in law's journey as a former participant in tour de France is an endearing one. The shift in the rapport between Ramon and his father in law from a turbulent to a supportive one tugs the heartstrings-a clear emphasis that sometimes, support comes from an unlikely source.  You cheer for Ramon in every leg of the race. It definitely gives you the adrenaline rush to see him swim, bike and run. While he is running and falls down, words of encouragement given during his training sessions echo in his mind. In a triathlon race, there are times you may find yourself all alone, with no one to egg you on. Thats when your mind comes into play.

100 meters is a fine depiction of defying odds and working your way up a goal that almost seems impossible to achieve. Its a delightful watch for every triathlete and for anyone else who aspires to spread their wings and touch the sky.  Highly recommend this one.

‘200 Meters’ Review: Family Drama Meets Road Movie in Palestine

The depiction of daily lives in the Occupied Territories and the hurdles faced by separated families ring true in Ameen Nayfeh’s film, even when the script occasionally falters.

200 Meters

One of the pleasures of anticipating an Ali Suliman performance is knowing he’ll bring depth and complexity to every role. His character in “ 200 Meters ,” a father of three taking huge risks to get to his son in the hospital, doesn’t expand his repertoire, but it gives the movie its heart. The film may not always be quite as successful in imbuing all roles with the same kind of unaffected three-dimensionality, but debuting writer-director Ameen Nayfeh ’s depiction of the shameful hurdles Palestinians must overcome in their daily lives rings true even when the script falters. Part family drama, part road movie, the film — which landed the audience prize in Venice Days — works best when drawing out how one man’s story is a reflection of a collective experience, and should find welcoming audiences at festivals and showcases.

Mustafa (Suliman) is a freelance construction worker, a loving husband and father of three, and a man of principles. His wife Salwa (Lana Zreik) lives with their kids in an apartment just inside the wall dividing Israel from the Occupied Territories, while Mustafa maintains a place with his mother 200 meters (219 yards) on the other side, within sight of each other. He could obtain a permit allowing him to live in Israel, since his wife and kids are Israeli citizens, but he’s unwilling to play by rules he considers illegitimate, so instead he uses his work permit to get jobs and spend regular time with his family. Salwa’s tired of the back and forth, of her husband not being present, which leads to occasional outbursts invariably subsumed by the tenderness of their rapport.

One day at dawn when he’s crossing the border with hundreds of others to go to work, Mustafa’s told by the officious guard that his permit has expired and he can’t enter Israel. The scene, like an earlier one, may feel like many other checkpoint sequences we’ve seen in Palestinian films, yet we might as well criticize commonplace commuter scenes in films from anywhere else: This is daily life, often twice a day, so it belongs here. Since it’s the weekend, he can’t renew his permit immediately, but needing the work and wanting to see his family, he goes to people smuggler Nader (Nabil Al Raai), who’s charging about $100 to cross. Then he gets a call from Salwa that their son Majd (Tawfeeq Nayfeh) is in the hospital on the Israeli side, making the urgency acute.

Popular on Variety

An odd assortment of fellow passengers joins him in the smuggler’s vehicle. There’s younger, cocksure Rami (Mahmoud Abu Eita), arty activist Kifah (Motaz Malhees) and German photographer Anne (Anna Unterberger), cluelessly attempting to film the whole experience. Each figure rather obviously represents a particular type, and while Rami manages to escape being a standardized character thanks to Abu Eita’s strong performance, Anne is practically a parody of the German tourist in Palestine, well-meaning and naive to an eye-rolling degree. Nayfeh tries to develop the role by giving Anne an unexpected background, but it feels too contrived, too convenient as a plot device and exposes even more the maddening nature of her obliviousness.

The majority of the film is spent following the group’s danger-filled journey to get across a border that should be accessible to all. That means facing Israeli security, Palestinian hoodlums and, of course, their own fears as each person nervously weighs getting caught with what’s waiting for them on the other side. Tension-filled scenes are nicely played and well-constructed, driven by Mustafa’s increasingly desperate need to make sure his hospitalized son is OK. It’s this goal, framed by the tender family dynamics witnessed earlier, that gives “200 Meters” its appeal, making the lovely ending feel satisfying rather than cloying in its sweetness. Nimble cinematography by Elin Kirschfink (“Our Struggles”) reflects and amplifies the stress as well as the intimacy, finally bridging the divide between the family’s two apartments with an aching kind of warmth.
