Travel & Tourism Bachelor Master Thesis Topics

Travel & Tourism Bachelor Master Thesis Topics

When I did my master’s degree in economics, I strongly considered writing about something related to travel and tourism. That part of the world has always interested me. I’ve always been a traveler – and will hopefully always be one. In the process of finding out what to write for my own thesis, I spent probably 100 hours investigating different bachelor/master topics that in some way can be related to the travel industry. Personally, I went on writing about how Scandinavian companies could benefit from taking their manufacturing process home from SouthEast Asia. But that left me with a lot of travel/tourism-related topics that I want to share with you – for free. Let’s start.

Table of Contents

Categories of travel/tourism thesis topics.

1. Eco-tourism“Is it really possible to travel without leaving an environmental footprint?”
2. Travel marketing“Out of all the 1000 hotels in New York: what makes YOUR hotel different – and how do you communicate that?”
3. Economic development“How big part of Thailands’ economy is dependent on traveling?”
4. Politics“North Korea…you sure that it’s safe to travel there, honey..?”
5. Digital nomads“Oh, are people really traveling the world without having a real job!? How do they do that!?”
6. Domestic traveling“Should we just skip that trip to Asia and rather take a trip to the countryside this summer? If not: why not?”

These are the main topics that I will let you know more about in this article.

If you are a student looking for thesis topics related to tourism/travel, I will strongly recommend you to keep reading.

I usually answer everyone in between 0-24 hours.

Enough off-topic. You came here for the thesis topics. Let’s get to it.

Eco-tourism: Traveling and its environmental impact

Specific topic suggestion: what will happen with the new wave of indian and chinese travelers.

The more money people get between their hands, the more likely are they to get on an airplane and fly.

As you might already know, airplanes have been proven to leave a HUGE environmental impact. So should we be worried about the two graphs seen below…?

China GDP growth

Number of international travelers from china between 2001-2015.

PS! If you’re interested in this topic, I would strongly suggest that you read this article published in traveldailynews.com . The author explains how there is a correlation between economic growth in one region and the willingness to travel abroad from the people living in that region/country.

Other thesis topic suggestions related to eco-tourism

This video had you thinking, right?

Tourism marketing: What inspires people to travel?

Topic 1: social media.

Social media is now a larger part of the marketing budget for almost every travel company. This is one of the topics that I was researching the most, and therefore I got loads of specific suggestions:

Topic 2: Travel “influencers”

There are (loads of) people out there that have a huge follower base on Instagram/Facebook. Many of them are paid by hotels and airlines to promote their products and services.

You could investigate topics like:

Other tourist marketing thesis ideas

Economic development.

Instead of giving in-depth thoughts about these sub-topics, I’ll go straight to some research questions that I considered using:

Politics: How can people in power determine where tourists go?

Ooooh, this is a topic that I know quite a lot about.

As a previous expat in China, I met a lot of people that had traveled to North Korea to “experience something crazy”.

Tourism Politics thesis topic ideas

Digital nomads: earn money online & travel anywhere.

Even though it might be a small topic to write about, I have yet to see someone writing a good bachelor or master thesis about digital nomads .

As you might already have figured out; that gives a lot of freedom. And a lot of young people use online income as an excuse to travel to low-cost countries and live their life.

Tips : If you find a good research question, I would strongly recommend you to interview several digital nomads. That could easily be done by finding them on groups on Facebook. Or, even better, fly down to a typical “digital nomad destination” and meet them face-to-face. 🙂

Domestic traveling: Why do people travel in their own country?

For many of us, the world “travel” is connected with somewhere exotic.

The Sharing Economy in Tourism

Examine how the rise of the sharing economy has impacted the tourism industry.

Hi MP, unfortunately, Amund isn’t longer part of the website team. I’d love to help you, however, I am not an expert for this topic.

Hi Yin! Yes, absolutely. I would actually try to conduct some proper research on the whole industry myself.

We are a couple of Danish guys who might think that the digital nomad thesis topic sounds like something we would love to explore in the new year. So we will pack our bags and leave for a “digital nomad city”.

Yep, I got a couple of options (that are far away from Denmark…):

Unfortunately, I can’t promise anything. It’s up to your supervisor to decide whether or not the thesis topic should be approved.

Tourism Marketing Dissertation Topics

Published by Owen Ingram at January 2nd, 2023 , Revised On August 17, 2023

Tourism is the world’s second most important economic sector. In many countries, tourism contributes to the GDP of the country as one of the leading industries.

The more tourists visiting a country, the better its economy will be, so this growing industry benefits almost all countries.

The goal of tourism marketing is to attract and retain tourists. Generally speaking, tourism promotion includes all activities related to promoting tourism products and services. If you are planning to write a dissertation on tourism marketing , there are many tourism marketing dissertation topics and ideas to get started. But before that, let us explore the idea of tourism marketing in detail.

Marketing for tourism aims to achieve three key objectives or goals:

  • Increasing awareness of a destination’s attractions and resources
  • Providing relevant information to encourage people to visit a destination.
  • Delivering quality tourism experiences will encourage repeat visits or longer stays.

Let’s now take a closer look at how you can increase revenue for your business. Tourism marketers are responsible for driving your business growth and giving you a competitive edge.

It is, however, a broad field of marketing that includes a variety of subtypes for promoting tourism. The following are some of the most common tourism marketing activities.

  • Promotion through online banners

Online banners help businesses promote their business through creative brochures and banners.

  • Promotion through written content

In tourism marketing, you can start a blog to promote articles to make people aware of places they may not have heard of.

  • Using emails to capture the audience

To capture a larger audience in less time, creating an email newsletter is an effective way to engage more audiences in less time and budget.

  • 4P’s marketing technique

Utilizing the 4Ps strategy is another tried and tested method for promoting tourism in a destination. A marketer uses ”product”, ”price”, ”place”, and ”promotion” to encourage tourism.

Types of Tourism Marketing

Tourism marketing is a broad field comprising many different types and concepts. The main types of tourism marketing are:

Destination Marketing

Destination marketing promotes a destination or region to encourage tourists to travel to a specific location.

Destination Development

In destination development, new attractions are created in an area that is already a tourist attraction. Adding exciting elements to an existing tourist destination is usually part of this type of tourism marketing. The process of developing a destination is also called “branding.”

Destination Management

Managing the whole process, from planning the route to tracking visitors’ progress once they arrive at their destination, means taking care of everything from start to finish.

Focused Tourism Marketing

Advertising of this type is used to promote a specific region, city, or destination. There is often promotion of a particular destination by local businesses, stakeholders, and companies. Marketing efforts must be focused on destinations with limited exposure to international travellers.

Portfolio Tourism Marketing

Portfolio tourism marketing includes focused and broad-based campaigns and local marketing activities to increase awareness among potential visitors.

3. Impact of travel guides

Tourism Research Topics - Latest Titles & Best Project Ideas

✔ During selection, narrow down the ideas to those you find interesting in class. When creating a topic for a tourism project , eliminate other topics you have learned until you are left with the ones you find fascinating. This can make the whole process of research to be fun for you compared to when you select an idea you find boring. Scholars tend to put more effort into interesting projects because they are curious to learn more which will be a plus.

✔ It is always advisable to consider the scope of your tourism research topic. During creation, it is advisable to modify an idea in a way that you will end up with a manageable idea. If that is not considered, you might find your study to be too narrow or wide making it difficult to get the best results. Your research topic must be easy to understand.

✔ Students should examine the resources they possess when choosing a tourism research idea. When considering whether the research topic of tourism will be achievable, you also have to check whether the resources you have will enable you to collect the right data. Review the many topics listed online to get more ideas and clues.

✔ You should consider the research assignment requirement when choosing a topic.  Every tourism homework or coursework assignment has specific instructions and to understand them you may have to consult your instructor. By that, you will be able to create a tourism research paper topic that will give you the results the tutors expect.

Four Major Types of Tourism Research to Identify Interesting Topics about Tourism

  • Market Research: Market research, an integral component of tourism research, focuses on identifying potential markets, analyzing customer preferences, and understanding the competitive landscape. It provides valuable insights into trends, patterns, and demands of the consumer base. This type of research uses surveys, interviews, and observational studies, among others, to glean data. For instance, topics for research on market research might investigate tourists' accommodation preferences, their choice of destination, or their propensity to engage in certain activities.
  • Motivational Research: This research area focuses on why people travel. A motivational research topic would seek to address this question by examining the factors that influence individuals to choose a particular destination or engage in specific activities. This type of research often involves psychological and sociological perspectives, studying the impact of elements like culture, lifestyle, personal interests, and emotional drivers. It also explores how factors like price, accessibility, and reputation can affect tourists' decisions, thus providing a holistic understanding of tourists' behavior.
  • Economic Research: Students understand that tourism is a critical component of local, national, and global economies, necessitating an economic perspective to tourism research. Thus, a topic in this direction of research analyzes the economic impact of tourism on a region, including job creation, GDP growth, and infrastructural development. Furthermore, it examines the viability of tourism projects, evaluates fiscal policies affecting tourism, and forecasts future economic trends. With such research findings, stakeholders can make informed decisions that optimize the economic benefits of tourism.
  • Environmental Research: In the age of sustainable and responsible travel, environmental research in tourism has gained immense importance. A research topic on environmental research assesses the environmental impact of tourism activities, explores the possibilities of sustainable tourism, and devises strategies to minimize the negative effects on natural resources. It involves studying local flora and fauna, monitoring pollution levels, and evaluating the management of tourist sites.

These are the four major types of tourism research and identifying a project topic on any of the areas would help contribute unique perspectives that help in the holistic development and growth of the tourism sector. As a student, choosing a research topic on any of the areas above should ensure that your final year project recommends and helps industry stakeholders to make strategic decisions, adapt to evolving trends, and ensure the sustainability of tourism activities. By fostering a culture of rigorous and comprehensive research, it is possible to ensure the continued prosperity of the tourism industry. Identifying comprehensive tourism topics for research is the first major step toward carrying out a successful project.

How to tell what or which topic is best for tourism research

Selecting the best topic for tourism research involves several key steps. Begin by exploring your personal interests within the broad spectrum of tourism, considering areas like sustainable tourism, cultural heritage preservation, or destination marketing. Then, focus into existing literature to identify gaps and emerging trends. Assess the relevance and potential impact of the topic of interest, ensuring it aligns with your academic or professional goals. Then you can seek guidance from our experts and so that we can refine your ideas and brainstorm potential topics. In that case, we normally develop three sample topics, from which you choose the best by narrowing down based on feasibility, novelty, and significance. Finally, craft clear and focused research questions, a concept or idea paper to guide your investigation and then present it to your supervisor for their approval or guidance. By following these steps, you can identify a research topic that captivates your interest, addresses important issues, and contributes meaningfully to the field of tourism. This is especially significant because if you proceed and start your tourism research proposal or project and have the topic rejected or adjusted after; you may lose a lot of time and work. So identify the best topic for your tourism research and once the topic is approved, proceed with the research work.

As with countless other sectors and industries, tourism—be it local, domestic, or international—was heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This watershed event resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of travelers, with the closure of international borders and travel bans. Since then, the industry has started to recover; with this recovery, so, too, have conversations reemerged regarding the need for more sustainable travel-related practices and frameworks. Conventional tourism, in spite of contributing to economic growth, has several disadvantages, including negative environmental impacts and the erosion of cultural heritage landmarks as well as the harming of relationships with local communities to whom such sites are of historic and/or spiritual value. This edited collection explores the myriad and multi-scalar ways that sustainability can be infused into modern tourism. The different chapters featured in this book suggest, respectively, alternative frameworks, timely innovations, and sustainable solutions to existing travel-related challenges, as well as recommendations for viable policies and practices moving forward.

Barcelona anti-tourism protesters fire water pistols at visitors

CNNWire logo

Protesters in Barcelona have sprayed visitors with water as part of a demonstration against mass tourism .

Demonstrators marching through areas popular with tourists on Saturday chanted "tourists go home" and squirted them with water pistols, while others carried signs with slogans including "Barcelona is not for sale."

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of the city in the latest demonstration against mass tourism in Spain, which has seen similar actions in the Canary Islands and Mallorca recently, decrying the impact on living costs and quality of life for local people.

The demonstration was organised by a group of more than 100 local organizations, led by the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turistic (Neighborhood Assembly for Tourism Degrowth).

According to official figures, almost 26 million visitors made an overnight stay in the Barcelona region in 2023, spending 12.75 billion ($13.8 billion).

However, the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic says that these visitors increase prices and put pressure on public services, while profits from the tourism industry are unfairly distributed and increase social inequality.

It has published 13 proposals to reduce the number of visitors and transition the city to a new model of tourism, including the closure of cruise ship terminals, more regulation of tourist accommodation and an end to public spending on tourism promotion.

On Saturday, the city's mayor, Jaume Collboni, highlighted a series of measures that he has announced recently to reduce the impact of mass tourism, including increasing the nightly tourist tax to 4 ($4.30) and limiting the number of cruise ship passengers.

At the end of June, Collboni also announced that it would end apartment rentals for tourists by 2028 by scrapping short-term rental licenses for more than 10,000 apartments.

This would help to make housing more affordable for long-term residents, according to Collboni, who said rents had increased 68% in the past 10 years, with the cost of buying a house up 38%.

However, Collboni has been criticized for allowing events such as a Louis Vuitton catwalk show in architect Antoni Gaudí's Parc Güell in May, as well as the upcoming America's Cup sailing competition.

The growing discontent in Barcelona echoes similar protests in other parts of Spain.

In April, locals in the Canary Islands mobilized to protest against excessive tourism , blaming visitors for pricing them out of their homes and causing environmental damage.

These complaints are common to many tourist hot spots around the world, which have experienced record visitor numbers recently as the travel industry has roared back from a pandemic-induced downturn.

Such surges may be sweet for local economies and hospitality businesses' bottom line, but they also come with notable downsides: increased noise, pollution, traffic and strain on resources; a lower quality of life for locals; and a diminished visitor experience, among others.

Not surprisingly, many tourist magnets have created initiatives and restrictions intended to combat overtourism, including new or increased tourist taxes, campaigns aimed at discouraging problematic visitors and attendance caps at popular attractions.

Thinking of going to Barcelona? 'Better not,' tourists told

The organisers behind an anti-tourism protest don't think water pistols alone will change Barcelona's tourism model - but if it's enough to make some people stay away, that's fine by them.

Water pistols squirted at tourists, tape crisscrossing the doors of hotels, placards brandished at lunching holidaymakers.

The images from an anti-tourism protest in Barcelona were stark - but do they tell the whole story?

About 3,000 people took part in the demonstration in the Catalan capital on Saturday , led by the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turistic (ABDT), which translates to Neighbourhood Assembly for Tourism Degrowth.

Why did they take to the streets - and should tourists reconsider their trips?

'Tourists go home'

The messages painted on cardboard placards were succinct: "Tourists go home"; "Tourists out"; "Barcelona is not Disneyland".

Some 2,800 people, according to the City Council, have demonstrated in the center of Barcelona against mass tourism, under the slogan 'Enough. Let's put a limit to tourism'. The demonstrators declared that there is a tourist industry that "has enormous negative impacts, in labor, social and environmental terms". 06 JULY 2024 Lorena Sop..na / Europa Press 07/06/2024 (Europa Press via AP)

So are tourists really not welcome in Barcelona?

A spokesperson for ABDT told Sky News that, like the protests against overtourism in the Canary Islands , Saturday's demonstration was aimed at the tourism industry and authorities rather than individuals.

But unlike Tenerife residents who were keen to distance themselves from the "tourists go home" rhetoric, Barcelona's protesters are happy for potential visitors to take their message on board.

"If anyone asked us, 'should I come to Barcelona or better not?' our answer would be 'better not'," the spokesperson said.

"It hurts the city and its people and it's not even worth it for you," they added.

They acknowledged it will take more than individual travellers changing their habits to alter the industry, but said they believed in everyone travelling "less, closer and better".

"It would be great if some tourists stop coming, but that won't happen because of water guns, and won't happen in general by itself," they continued.

They said people squirting water guns and blocking hotel entrances with tape were "spontaneous actions" during the protest, but added: "The organisation does not condemn these actions, they are not even violent."

A manifesto for degrowth

ABDT's goal is "tourism degrowth" - both a reduction in tourist numbers and the city's economic dependence on the industry.

They published a manifesto outlining the reasons for the protest, saying "citizens suffer directly from the consequences" of tourism.

They say neighbourhoods have been gentrified and local identity lost, public services are under pressure, the cost of living and housing has gone up, and the planes, hire cars and cruise ships that carry tourists around damage the environment.

"It's true that many people depend on [tourism], but most of that money stays in the hands of a few rich [people]," the spokesperson told Sky News.

Tourism sector jobs are renowned for being precarious, with "awful work conditions and the worst wages in the city", they said.

Holiday rentals push out locals

Tourist numbers and housing costs have escalated in tandem, prompting calls for controls on the former to bring down the latter.

In 2023, Spain welcomed a record-breaking 85 million international tourists.

And Barcelona, home to 1.6 million people, saw almost 26 million overnight visitors in 2023, according to Barcelona City Council.

With the rental market dominated by short-term tourist lets, housing has become unaffordable for many residents.

Over the past decade, rents have risen 68% in the city, and the cost of buying a house by 38%, according to the property website Idealista.

Even in the last year things have got worse, with rents in June up 18% on average compared to the previous year.

Cracking down on short-term rentals

On 3 July, Spain's government announced a crackdown on short-term and seasonal holiday lettings.

Listings on platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com must have licences, and the government will ramp up its investigations to make sure they do.

"If a house doesn't have a licence for tourism, advertising it on internet platforms should be illegal and thus punished," consumer rights minister Pablo Bustinduy told state broadcaster TVE.

Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Collboni, announced plans to ban renting homes to tourists , cancelling the licences of all 10,101 apartments currently approved as short-term rentals by November 2028.

Spain's Constitutional Court is deliberating whether the move is legal.

Apartur, the association of tourism apartment owners, said the measure amounted to expropriation (the taking by the state of private property, ostensibly for public good).

ABDT, meanwhile, said the plan did not go far enough to tackle overtourism, noting it was announced alongside proposals to increase the number of hotel places.

What do locals think?

The majority of residents still feel tourism is beneficial rather than detrimental to the city, according to a report published by Barcelona City Council in 2023.

But attitudes have shifted in recent years, the report shows, with increasing criticism of the industry and its impacts.

"More and more people believe that Barcelona has reached its tourism capacity limit," the report says.

"The economic contribution of tourism is recognised but this benefit does not tip the balance in its favour."

Half of respondents said they avoided areas popular with tourists, including the Old Town, the area surrounding the Sagrada Familia, and Park Guell.

Targeting tourists is 'reprehensible uncivil behaviour'

Rosario Sanchez, Spain's secretary of state for tourism, condemned the protests, telling Sky News the country remains one of the "safest tourist destinations".

"Specific incidents with tourists are reprehensible uncivil behaviour that has nothing to do with the reality of our country," she said.

She argued protesters were not "not saying 'no to tourism'," but wanted changes that addressed their quality of life.

Tourism continues to recover from COVID but faces renewed challenges

OECD Tourism Trends and Policies 2024 highlights the sector’s continued recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, with international tourist arrivals in 2023 exceeding pre-pandemic levels in many OECD countries.  However, the pace of recovery has been uneven and the sector faces renewed challenges that may weigh down on growth.

The report underscores the sector's pivotal role in driving economic prosperity, jobs and well-being, with tourism´s direct contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) bouncing back to 3.9% in 2022 in 20 OECD countries with available data, just half a percentage point down on 2019.  Tourism also contributed 14.8% to service exports in 2022, still below pre-pandemic levels, but up from 9.7% in 2021. The evidence suggests that the recovery has continued since, spurred by the recovery in international arrivals and strong domestic performance.

In Colombia (up 34%) and Portugal (up 12%), international tourist arrivals reached new highs, exceeding pre-pandemic levels in 2023, but the recovery has been slower in countries like Australia, Finland, Japan and New Zealand.

The report recommends governments implement policies to:

  • Empower destinations to diversify and better manage visitor flows, to deliver better outcomes for the environment and local communities.
  • Integrate tourism workers' needs into broader development strategies, ensuring access to affordable housing and transportation in remote areas.
  • Support tourism businesses to access financial aid and skills to adopt digital solutions, green business operations, and develop innovative work practices.
