She’s horrified when she realizes the “stranger” is Dr. Adam Carlson, a prominent professor in her department who is known for being a hypercritical and moody tyrant.

She and Adam each have reasons for needing to be in a relationship, and they agree to pretend to date for the sake of appearances. Of course, as she gets to know Adam, it’s only a matter of time before she starts feeling something for him, and it becomes clear that her little experiment in fake-dating just might combust…

Ali Hazelwood's The Love Hypothesis is getting the film adaptation treatment, and while that's exciting news for fans of romantic movies, there's another Hazelwood book that should be adapted first. The name Ali Hazelwood should not turn up any real person when searched in a government database because it's the pen name of an Italian neuroscience professor who has successfully dabbled in romance writing . While the real name of Ali Hazelwood is yet to be revealed, perhaps, like Stephen King before her , in time, her given name will become as ubiquitous as her pseudonym.

Because of her background in STEM, many of Hazelwood's books center on women in the sciences and other academic fields . She first began writing in 2021, with her debut novel, The Love Hypothesis , which was originally a Star Wars fan fiction about Rey and Kylo Ren (via Vulture ). She didn't stop with one book, however, and has since written six more romance novels, as well as a collection of novellas. In 2023, she paused her teaching career and became a full-time writer, likely the announced adaptation of her debut playing a part in that decision (via WGBH ).

The Love Hypothesis Is A Perfect Movie Adaptation Because It Was Ali Hazelwood's First Book

Most fans came to the author because of her debut novel.

The Love Hypothesis was a huge hit. Originally published online under the title Head Over Feet in 2018, Hazelwood made some changes to her story, including removing any and all references to Star Wars and changing the characters' names to Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen. In the novel, Olive is a third-year biology PhD student at Stanford who is sick of her best friend Anh always commenting on her dating life. To avoid the questions entirely, she fakes a relationship with a new professor, Dr. Adam Carlsen, though the fake feelings begin morphing into something real.

While the draw of fantasy books is the worldbuilding & magic, the plots within these novels are elevated by great romances & love stories.

Hazelwood's debut novel made the New York Times best-seller list back in 2021 and has been celebrated for placing a woman in STEM at the center of the story, an unusual character for a romance novel . The author's background in the specific field makes her descriptions and the situations feel fully realized. In 2022, it was announced that The Love Hypothesis would be joining the romance novel-to-movie pipeline with an adaption from Bisous Pictures, a label from Elizabeth Cantillon (via Deadline ). Hazelwood said about the adaptation,

"It's a true privilege to have Elizabeth and such a talented and experienced team of people working on adapting The Love Hypothesis, and I’m very excited for this next step in Olive and Adam's story!"

It's great news for Hazelwood and fans who were first introduced to her via The Love Hypothesis , but there's another book that deserves the adaptation treatment as well.

Ali Hazelwood's Bride Should Be Adapted First

Bride is a more cinematic story that will draw in new audiences.

Bride is Ali Hazelwood's fifth book, debuting on February 6, 2024. The movie is a fantasy romance that follows a dangerous union between, Misery Lark, a Vampyre bride, and Lowe Moreland, the head of a Werewolf clan. For Misery to be accepted back into a society she was thrown out of, she agrees to a peacekeeping mission by marrying herself off to Moreland. Bride is a bit more of a polished novel than The Love Hypothesis and Misery is a much more cinematic character than Olivia , with her wit and darkness.

While Ali Hazelwood's real name is not known, she has frequently posted images of herself and does not take great pains to obscure her identity.

Viewers who aren't familiar with Ali Hazelwood would benefit from seeing Bride adapted first, as its characters, story, and Hazelwood's writing are all more suited to the film medium. Furthermore, there could end up being some contentious rights issues with The Love Hypothesis considering it started as a Star Wars adaptation. The infamously litigious House of Mouse may have something to say about it. Either way, having one Hazelwood adaptation, whatever it is, is better than having none.

Reylo stans rejoice! Bisous Pictures have partnered with author Ali Hazelwood on an adaption of her New York Times Best Selling novel, The Love Hypothesis . Deadline reports that a deal was struck between Elizabeth Cantillon and MRC Film to adapt the Berkley-published book.

The Love Hypothesis is one of a growing number of titles which gained popularity through the 'BookTok' community on TikTok. It is a romance book set amongst academia which follows the story of a young, hot, dreamy and talented - naturally - professor named (more on this later) Adam Carlsen, and a Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith. The pair end up caught in a lie to portray a convincing and romantic couple, with the story portraying - and subverting - many tropes used in classic romance tales.

“Bisous Pictures is thrilled to be working with Ali to amplify her voice and bring this magical book to the screen,” said Cantillon, with Hazelwood adding: “It’s a true privilege to have Elizabeth and such a talented and experienced team of people working on adapting The Love Hypothesis , and I’m very excited for this next step in Olive and Adam’s story!”

Looking more closely at the cover of the novel, however, and you would be forgiven for thinking you might have seen the couple before. Hazelwood began writing fan fiction for the Star Trek fandom, before moving on to Star Wars. And yes, if you haven't already figured it out, the main characters are based on Kylo Ren and Rey from the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Archive of Our Own is where The Love Hypothesis took flight, albeit under a different title, and where a legion of fans joined in Olive and Adam's romance.

In a 2021 interview with Collider's Carly Lane , the day after news broke that The Love Hypothesis officially became a New York Times bestseller , Hazelwood spoke at length about the freedom fan fiction offered. She explained how it was allowing writers to find their voice and express their feelings on mediums where they would find it harder to do in traditional publishing houses.

"I was really, really into writing fan fiction, first for the Star Trek fandom and then for the Star Wars fandom. And I loved it. It was just, it was this amazing community. I made a lot of friends and I was just having a lot of fun. And then what happened is that I started slowly thinking about trying to write something original, just to challenge myself and to do something different. And while I was in that kind of mood, my agent started reading my fan fiction on Archive of Our Own and then she reached out with a DM. She was like, "I saw that you wrote something about maybe pulling some of your fics and reworking them. And I wanted to tell you that I'm a literary agent and I would love to see you some of your manuscripts, if you're interested in it."

No release date has yet been announced for The Love Hypothesis, but the petition for Driver and Daisy Ridley to take on the lead roles is surely moments away from launching.

‘The Love Hypothesis’ Is Being Adapted For The Big Screen

For fans of Ali Hazelwood’s ‘The Love Hypothesis,’ we have some super exciting news for you! Adaptation news for the famous romance book was just announced.

The best-selling novel, The Love Hypothesis , by Ali Hazelwood, is getting a movie! She is partnering with the romance label, Bisous Pictures, for the adaptation of the beloved BookTok sensation.

Hazelwood could not contain her excitement as she shares the news all over her social media pages.

The Movie Deal

The Love Hypothesis centers around Olive Smith, a third-year Ph.D. candidate. Olive is also a nonbeliever in lasting romantic relationships. She is determined to prove to her friend she is dating. But naturally, she panics and kisses the first man she sees. Luckily Adam Carlsen, the attractive professor, and known lab tyrant, agrees to be her fake boyfriend. Soon things get complicated in their fake relationship as feelings between them start changing. 

Bisous Pictures is thrilled to work on the movie and bring Olive and Adam’s relationship to life on the big screen.

The Power of Fanfiction

Another author proves the fanfiction to published book to movie pipeline is real. Surprisingly, there have been many well-known series that were originally fanfiction. For instance, 50 Shades of Grey was Twilight fanfiction. After is another, developed from a Harry Styles fanfiction. Therefore, it is no secret that many writers find their success by starting with fanfiction. And Hazelwood is one of them, as The Love Hypothesis was a fic about Reylo, Kylo Ren, and Rey from the Star Wars series. Then, the rest is history. 

Undeniably, The Love Hypothesis has been a huge sensation. It was on the New York Times Best Sellers List for 39 weeks. Hazelwood’s success continues as her recent novel, Love on the Brain , was an instant bestseller and has been on the list for four consecutive weeks.
