Plastic pollution in today’s world has become one of the most alarming environmental issues. The world is being overburdened with the rapid increase in the production of disposable plastic products.

Plastics are low-cost and long-lasting, which leads to high plastic production by humans. The chemical structure of plastics makes them resistant to many natural processes of degradation. As a result of which they are not easily degraded.

Plastic becomes a problem as it acts like a sponge. It soaks up other toxic chemicals and pollutants present in the ocean. Eventually, when the plastic breaks down, these chemical and harmful substances get released into the environment along with additives such as colour, which turns out to be highly toxic.

After World War II, the production and development of numerous new plastic products had been accelerated. In the modern age, life without plastic is unimaginable. Even though plastic was very convenient, as people started engaging in the throw-away culture, the dark side of the product was disclosed. The lifespan of many plastic products, such as plastic bags or polythene, is of mere minutes to hours. However, they persist in the environment for hundreds of years.

Major rivers act as conveyor belts carrying the trash, which includes plastic waste into the seas. Once the plastic trash reaches the sea, it remains in the coastal waters. However, if it gets caught in ocean currents, it can be transported around the globe.

Every single year millions of birds, animals, fishes, and other marine organisms are being killed due to plastic. Plastic is known to have affected around 700 species, including endangered ones. Almost every species of sea bird eats plastic.

Entanglement and starvation is the primary cause for the death of the marine animals. Plastics have been found to have blocked digestive tract or torn organs, causing death. Starvation was created as the stomachs were filled with plastics, which reduced the urge to eat. Land-based animals such as elephants, zebras, tigers, camels, etc. have consumed plastic and, in some cases, died.

Plastic also hampers human lives in many ways. One of them being that most of the food that we consume comes in plastic containers that contain BPAs. It is an endocrine disruptor. The body functions that are regulated by the human endocrine system are metabolism, heart rate, digestion, and fertility.

Research done in the year 2018 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) showed that 90% of the bottled water that people consume had microplastics in them. Although the effect of microplastics on human health is not known as such, scientists agree that as microplastics hurt the health of other species, it can’t be good for us as well.

Burning trash in the open air is a widespread practice in many parts of the world where there is no proper waste management system. This practice allows chemicals from plastic that are released during the process to enter our bodies even when we naturally are breathing.

Even though the burning of plastic reduces the amount of trash being dumped into the oceans and lands, it still generates toxic fumes, which also contribute as greenhouse gases.

Plastics and plastic products are present everywhere. These products are approximately used only once before they end up as wastes.

Air pollution is made up of different types of pollutants like sulphur , nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide, which may be generated from different sources.

Air quality can be affected by our activities such as burning wood, construction work, chemical factories, mining, and industrial activities.

The natural causes are volcanic eruptions, dust storms, forest fires, etc.

Increasing deforestation, i.e., the decrease in trees and plants, leads to an imbalance in nature, causing Global warming and depletion of the Ozone layer.

Air Pollution also causes acid rain, which leads to the death of many animals and marine creatures.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is an index used to measure a specific region's air pollution and estimate its severity, like an AQI in the range of (0-50) is excellent. At the same time, AQI>300 is very dangerous.

In the city, planting trees and the creation of micro-forests will help combat air pollution.

We can use solar energy, e-cars, or machines to minimise air pollution in our homes.

The Government is taking many initiatives to mitigate air pollution through intensive awareness, training, and capacity-building drives for clean air, improving public transport use, avoiding plastic bags and crackers, etc.

We must be aware and responsible in our actions, as air pollution can have severe implications for our lives.

This line speaks in depth about the kind of effect air pollution has created on us as well as on our environment. Air pollution is generated by a wide range of human activities, the most significant of which are the usage of vehicles and the operation of factories. Air pollution affects all living things in a lot of ways.

Effects of Air Pollution

Air pollution causes an imbalance of gases in the atmosphere, where even a slight variation in the arrangement of these gases can disintegrate our ecosystem's balance. The catastrophic effects of air pollution include global warming, acid rain, depletion of the ozone layer, respiratory tract and lung diseases like asthma and bronchitis etc., an increase in infant mortality rate, extinction of wild species, etc.

How Can We Contribute

As responsible citizens, we should start adopting renewable energy sources, reduce fossil fuel usage at all levels, and educate more and more people on the issue of air pollution. Let us start from our homes and let’s join hands for a better and brighter future.

The Government can replace cow dung and coal with natural gas pipelines in rural areas. We should shift to a public transport system and incorporate eco-friendly measures into our daily lifestyle, like following the three R’s- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and conserve and plant more trees.

Pollution permeates every aspect of our lives, from the air we breathe every second to the water we drink to the food we eat to sustain our life. Unfortunately, though it may be, human activity is more responsible than natural causes for the deterioration of the air we breathe. Half of all human ailments may be traced back to the increasingly contaminated air we breathe today.

Nature becomes unbalanced as a result of the decline in trees and plants. It contributes to both global warming and ozone layer destruction. Another threat associated with global warming is the defrosting of polar ice, which results from an imbalance in the natural cycle. Skin conditions are brought on by infrared rays that enter our environment as a result of the ozone layer being destroyed.

Automobile pollution has grown dramatically over the last decade, particularly in major metropolitan areas.

Cars | More cars on the road is a contributing factor, but the other factors described above also contribute to the worsening pollution situation. To control the emission rate when the vehicle is on the road, we must ensure regular maintenance and inspection of these cars. Some facilities, such as Auto Pollution Testing Centers (AETCs), are vital in monitoring the emission levels of vehicles on the road.

Industries | Another significant contributor to air pollution is the industrial sector. Water contamination directly results from industrial pollution, and the air quality also suffers. This deterioration in air quality may be traced back to widespread industrialisation and the rise of mechanisation that has replaced much human labour. The increasing air pollution is a crisis that demands immediate action lest the day arrives when it is physically impossible to breathe, and no life can exist on Earth. Then let us stop the air from getting more poisonous and rescue our planet.

Initiatives To Be Taken

Additional factors influence automobile gas production and contribute to increased air pollution. Road congestion, a lack of funding for repairs, and a sloppy management structure all contribute to the premature demise of these cars. The government must push people toward public transportation, and bicycles should have lanes. There has to be an emphasis on getting people to walk a few kilometres instead of using their cars. Even if the air quality doesn't improve much, these little adjustments may help.

My Neighbourhood

Air pollution is a significant problem in my neighbourhood. To demonstrate my commitment to acting responsibly as a student, I have formed an organisation whose main objective is to lessen air pollution in the local area. The participation rate has gone up, and we attribute this partly to the fact that we reward those who show the most significant responsibility. Our organisation also hosts seminars to educate the public on the terrible consequences of air pollution.

We, as a group, motivated young people to use public transport in our locality and inspired students to use bicycles to commute daily to school and nearby places. To avoid burning plastics at home, with the help of the panchayat, we collect plastic waste from every home monthly and send them to a nearby plastic recycling industry. For the sake of doing good in the world, we also host events and organise other activities. I've done my part as a law-abiding citizen, and now it's your time.

Hello, everyone. Thank you for having me. Today I want to talk about water pollution, its causes and how it can be controlled.

Water is the basic need for survival. It has been used by living things for ages. Life without water cannot be imagined. Water is the most important element that cannot be replaced by any other element. Due to the continuous use and exploitation, there is water pollution occurring all around us. 

Water pollution is one of the most important issues which every country is facing right now. Water pollution is the result of continuous economic growth. As the population grew, water was exploited with that. The main source of water pollution includes the overflow of domestic sewage in clean water bodies. Dangerous organic and chemical waste from industries is dumped in various river bodies. The toxic chemicals present in industrial waste not only pollute water but also kill aquatic life. 

The major pollutant industries are fertilizers, pesticides, refineries, metal plating, etc. Sewage waste and garbage from houses are carelessly thrown into clean water bodies by the citizens. 

Water pollution remains a major issue in most developing countries which includes India. In India, many people die because of water pollution. Around 80% of India’s water bodies are severely polluted as people dump raw sewage and garbage into the rivers and lakes. This has led to water being undrinkable and which in turn causes the vast majority of the population to heavily rely on expensive drinking sources. The condition of water pollution is so bad in India that every year 1.5 million children die from malaria. 

Reasons for India’s increased problem in water pollution are that India suffers from urbanization, Unauthorized slums have been established and no proper pipelining by the government. Due to overpopulation, many underprivileged people decide to live in slums where they drink contaminated water which causes diseases. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Delhi has been ranked as the world’s worst pollution hotspot. The magnitude of pollutants present in the ‘Capital of India’ is massive. Contaminated air present in the atmosphere is causing devastating impacts on the health of the individuals and the environment. It is shocking to perceive the truth that the quality of air in Delhi is six times more polluted than the quality of air that is safe for human beings.

Do you know which are the 30 worst polluted cities in the world? It is really shocking to find that nearly 20 cities on the list are in India. Population explosion is one of the major reasons responsible for air pollution. As per the records, the number of people living in cities has increased dramatically over these years. Greenhouse gases act as pollutants and result in the contamination of the air. It traps the heat produced by the sun inside our planet and ultimately results in the global temperature rise.

Smokes and toxic dust from the industries and factories get mixed to the air and causes air pollution. Such polluted air is very bad for the lungs when we breathed air in. Sewage and other wastes from the industries and factories have their ways directly to the large water bodies (river, lakes, seas, etc) and they get mixed properly to the drinking water causes water pollution. Such polluted water (containing germs, bacteria, toxic substances, viruses, etc.) is very bad to the health of human beings, animals and plants (whoever drinks this water).

Pollution is affecting our lives so we have to take individual steps and do every possible things what we can do. We should not depend only on our government actions for some positive changes. Common people like us are the main factor to stop the spread of pollution.

Good morning to the respected sir, madam and my friends. At this event, I would like to speech on pollution, the most serious issue of the modern time. The most powerful demon in the form of environmental pollution has disordered the ecological balance of the atmosphere. It is a big global issue however varies in its nature and extent with regional variations. It is the topic of anxiety and debate to solve this issue. It is not the time to accuse one another however it is the time to fight this demon together with some effective weapons. Rich, powerful and developed countries are highly responsible for such a huge spread of pollution and global warming however all countries are bearing this problem.

We have been the victim of this environmental pollution however we cannot deny that this problem is created by us. It is we who have given rise to this problem due to increased irregular consumption level of natural resources and living patterns of the modern time. Pollution is the result of fast urbanization, deforestation, industrialization, technologies and unmanageable wastes from industries and factories. It is getting boom because of the high consumption level of fertilizers in agriculture, emissions from chimneys, smoke from motor vehicles, etc.

Increased number of vehicles has increased the consumption level of fuels which is causing the air pollution to a great extent. Over population is another big issue of this ever increasing pollution. It has created the need of more houses, cutting of plants to make living places, and other modern needs of the people is leading to the pollution. No one is thinking about this issue but everyone is busy in money making and collecting things of physical comfort. Because of overpopulation the consumption of fresh water, consumption of wood, etc., has increased. Increasing human needs of physical comfort (such as AC, TV, electricity, electronic devices, fertilizers, freeze, washing machine, etc.) is directly related to the spread of pollution.

Now, we lack the fresh air to breathe, fresh water to drink, fresh land to get healthy crops, and peaceful environment to sleep. We are bearing all that because of our negligence and carelessness. We have to work hard continuously to get natural fresh environment to get real physical and mental comfort. We have to get control over this demon and save life here by planting more trees, well managing wastes from industries and factories, reducing need of heavy vehicles, and other effective steps.

Good morning to all. At this event celebration, I am going to recite a speech on pollution. My dear friends, pollution is not an unknown word for us. We are well aware of it, its causes and bad effects on the environment and our lives. A natural environmental contains everything required for the survival, growth, and development of the living beings on earth. Pollution has happened because of the mixing of dangerous unnatural ingredients into the natural resources which causes imbalance in the ecosystem and thus various health hazards to the human beings and animals. Pollution is damaging the ecosystem and destroying the balance. This is all because of the industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, technological advancement, over population, etc. All these are the big reason of increasing level of toxic gases (causing air pollution), solids/liquids wastes (causing water, food and soil pollution) and sound (causing noise pollution). All are the reason of imbalance in the natural ecosystem in some direct or indirect ways.

Pollution is really bad for the environment and living things. It can make people and animals sick and can even kill them. When harmful chemicals get into our water, they hurt the animals that live in it and make the water not safe to use. Bad gases in the air can give people lung problems like asthma.

It has been the matter of great concern and consideration and need to solve. Because of the pollution, babies are born with variety of birth defects and life expectancy of people has been low because of the lethal diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart problem, etc. I want to share you some facts about pollution: According to the WHO, around 6.7% percent of all deaths and 7 million premature deaths worldwide are due to the air pollution. Mississippi River carries around 1.5 million metric tons of nitrogen pollution. Pollution caused by China may change United States weather patterns. Approximately, 56% trash of United States has covered landfills (half of that is only paper).

The most damaging pollutant causing global environmental pollution is fossil fuel. It has created various evil effects especially through air, water and soil. Protecting our environment and improving its natural value is the fundamental duty of all of us. We should try our best to tackle this problem and give a nice healthy future to our next generation.

Nigel Farage campaign speech interrupted by banner featuring Russian President Vladimir Putin

Nigel Farage's latest rally speech has been interrupted by political activists lowering a banner of Vladimir Putin behind him on stage.

The right-wing Reform UK leader was speaking at a rally in Walton on the Naze, in south-east England, on Saturday evening when a group called Led by Donkeys carried out the stunt.

As Mr Farage spoke to the audience at the Columbine Centre, a banner of a beaming Mr Putin giving a thumbs-up was lowered behind him, with "I [love] Nigel" printed in bold. 

Some audience members could initially be heard laughing before Mr Farage noticed the sign and asked, "Who put that up there?" 

The footage then jumps to a clip of Mr Farage saying someone at the centre "needs to get the sack" and his supporters roar in agreement. 

When there seems to be issues removing the banner, audience members begin to chant "rip it down". 

Mr Farage is running as MP in the seaside town of Clacton-on-Sea in his eighth attempt to win a seat in the House of Commons.

Political activism group Led by Donkeys claimed responsibility for the incident and shared footage on social media platform X. 

"We just dropped in on Farage's election rally with a beaming picture of Putin," the group wrote. 

"Nigel was not pleased." 

"Nigel Farage says Putin is the world leader he 'admires the most' and blames the West for Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine," the group added in the footage. 

It comes after Mr Farage said the West "provoked" Russia to invade Ukraine because of the eastward expansion of the European Union and NATO. 

While his remarks drew strong criticism across the British political spectrum, he went on to repeat them during campaigning.

Activists and staff campaigning for the party have also been at the centre of controversy this week following a Channel 4 News investigation.

Footage filmed covertly was aired on the channel showing a Reform UK volunteer in Clacton saying people seeking asylum should be shot.

"Get the young [army] recruits there with guns on the f***ing beach, target practice. F***ing just shoot them," he says in the video.

The same volunteer went on to describe Islam as a  "disgusting cult" and used a racial slur to describe Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has since described the remarks as hurtful. 

The volunteer has apologised and says his personal views do not reflect those of Reform UK.

Some of Mr Farage's senior campaign figures were also filmed speaking offensively by Channel 4's hidden camera.

Pointing out a LGBT flag on a passing police vehicle, one man says: "you see that f***** degenerate flag on the front bonnet [of the police car], what are the Old Bill [police] doing promoting that crap?"

Ahead of the UK elections on July 4, the ABC has also uncovered a network of pro-Russian Facebook pages interfering in the election.

Five coordinated Facebook pages spreading Kremlin talking points and posting in support of Mr Farage's populist party — a key challenger to the Conservatives — were monitored by the ABC.

Disinformation experts said the network's activity had the hallmarks of a Russian influence operation and the Conservative Party described it as "highly alarming".

President Joe Biden acknowledged age has affected his political performance, but said he would continue his campaign in a speech Friday, appearing far more energetic than he did during his shaky debate Thursday with former President Donald Trump.

Biden gave no indication he would heed calls from left-wing pundits for him to drop out of the race and allow another Democrat to run in his place, telling supporters in Raleigh, North Carolina, “I intend to win this state in November . . . we win here, we win the election.”

Biden spoke in the crucial swing state after stammering through Thursday’s debate, including several instances when he lost his train of thought and had to correct himself, prompting abysmal reviews even from some of Trump’s staunchest critics , and reports that Democrats were privately discussing replacing him on the ticket.

Acknowledging concerns about his age and mental acuity, Biden, 81, told the crowd: “I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious,” adding “I don’t walk as easy as I used to, I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to, I don’t debate as well as I used to.”

In a dig at Trump, who Biden accused of repeatedly lying throughout Thursday’s debate, the president said: “I know what I do know, I know how to tell the truth!”

Biden reassured his supporters “I would not be running again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I can do this job, because quite frankly the stakes are too high.”

Biden attacked Trump over his appointment of Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade and his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, accused him of cutting taxes for the wealthy and driving up the national deficit, telling the audience he spent “90 minutes on stage debating a guy who has the morals of an alley cat,” alleging Trump “set a new record for the most lies told in a single debate.”
