Why have a written speech?

While you might be able to deliver a speech without notes or just an outline, truly engaging speeches are usually written. By writing a speech, you can:

  • Organise your key points more effectively
  • Use rhetorical devices, such as rhetorical questions
  • Tell stories to connect with the audience
  • Hone your writing style to create a speech the audience understands and is easy to deliver
  • Include a strong call to action.

If you consider the great speeches for politics and business, the most effective speeches are written ahead of time and practiced before being delivered. Informative speeches require research to gather facts and supporting information, such as stories and examples. In addition, if using visual aids, you will need time to prepare these and match them to the speech.

Please note: Speech writing can also be spelled speechwriting. Depending on the dictionary you use, both spellings are correct. In Australia, speech writing is more common.

What about using artificial intelligence in the speech writing process?

You might have seen websites promoting the services of AI speech writers. We’ve tested AI for speechwriting and found that the results are not as good a speeches written by experience speechwriters. While AI speeches can be produced quickly, they lack the human touch needed to create impactful speeches. For example, most speeches, including motivational speeches, need to include personal stories that need to thoughtfully crafted. This is something an AI speech writer can do. In addition, special occasion speeches, such as birthday and wedding speeches, require a personal touch and an understanding of the specific context. AI speechwriters may not be able to capture the emotions and sentiments that are essential for such speeches. As highly experienced writers, we covered a wide range of subjects for all occasions  – everything from christening speeches and eulogies to motivational and political speeches.

Why Have a Written Speech or Presentation?

If we look at the great speeches in history, they were all written in advance. It simply isn’t possible to perfect your language without writing a speech on paper. A good speech requires research to find and choose the appropriate elements, such as stories, humour and facts. It also requires creativity in selecting the best words to convey the message. This often includes redrafting your speech until it feels right.

Writing your speech or having it written for you enables you to make an impact. Some speakers might try to speak from an outline, but writing a speech will give you a superior result.

Primarily, taking the time to write a speech enables you to research to find facts, examples, and stories to make your speech more impactful. Including informative content that supports your key points will help you persuade your audience and follow your call to action.

Focusing on your writing style can help you create a speech that the audience understands and has a sentence structure that is easy to read or memorise. When planning and writing a speech, you can also include rhetorical devices, such as rhetorical questions.

Another element you can focus on when writing a speech is creating a strong call to action. In Speech Power: The Leader’s Guide to Creating Powerful Speeches and Presentations, we cover several types of calls to action. When writing your speech, we’ll choose the best one to fit your topic, goals and audience.

For informative speeches, you might want to use visual aids, such as PowerPoint, to support your information. Planning and writing your speech will enable you to create a visual component that matches your text. If you’re only working from an outline, it will be more challenging to create relevant visuals.

If you want to practice your speech, writing it down word for word is a vital starting point. If you try to work from an outline and deliver your speech without the full text, it’s possible that you’ll leave out important points.

A professional speechwriter can help you put it all together to create an impactful speech. Call us on 1300 731 955 or use the contact form to get in touch.

In communication, the law, crisis & issues management, on-air, in print or online,

The emphasis is always on enhancing an organisation's name., speech writing – government.

Writing Successful Speeches

The Speech Writing – government workshop develops skills to write better speeches for oneself or for others.  People who lack speech-writing experience in ministerial offices, government department, the not-for-profit sector and the private sector would benefit from this workshop. The program is available in person-to-person mode or as a self-paced online learning program through our virtual training room at Reputation Online Learning .

The emphasis is on writing speeches that will capture and hold an audience’s attention.  This often is a difficult adjustment for many to make, because they are more accustomed to writing formulaic reports designed for functional efficiency, lacking in human personality.  The greatest discovery most participants make is that they are allowed to write speeches that are designed to be persuasive, engaging and even entertaining.

The bulk of the session is a hands-on workshop devoted to developing practical skills.  Participants either work alone or in pairs, write parts of their own speeches, then give and receive feedback from other participants.

Participants cover:

  • Writing in a lively and engaging fashion
  • The importance of the introduction
  • Speech structures
  • The power of telling stories
  • The powerful conclusion

Speech Writing – Government will equip anyone responsible for preparing speeches for themselves or colleagues.

It is important to distinguish between this program (that addresses the art of speech writing) from our Powerful Presentations workshop (that develops the presentation skills of public speakers).  Speech writing is a skill that is more than writing an essay.  It’s a succinct preparation of thoughts, messages and triggers to engage an audience.

By the end of the program, participants will:

  • Appreciate the function of a speech as distinct from the preparation of a written report.
  • Have an understanding of how to research essential elements for a speech, how to interview the person who will deliver the speech (if applicable).
  • Understand how to structure a speech, starting with a powerful opening, through to a memorable conclusion, incorporating a call-to-action, if appropriate.
  • Know how to write a speech that gets the message across to the audience in an informative, persuasive and engaging way.

Participants receive a suite of training resource called, ‘Writing Successful Speeches’.  It consists of:

  • a complete set of course notes covered during the sessions
  • a templates for developing a speech plan, a structure for the speech
  • a speechwriter’s checklist
  • a sample speech

Session Structure

Irrespective of whether the course is done in one-hit or spread over multiple sessions, whether it is delivered in-person or online, all Successful Speeches programs contain the following.  However, programs can be designed specifically to meet your requirements.

  • Main characteristics of a speech
  • Break down of what is needed for a good speech
  • 1 – Preparation
  • 2 – Interviewing (yourself or others)
  • 3 – Researching
  • 4 – Organising and writing
  • About the spoken word
  • Conveying your conviction

Speech Writing Course Modules

The Speech Writing System

Module 1: Learn how to influence others

In its most simplistic definition, influencing is having an effect on others — and every speech should aim to have some kind of impact on the audience! (It’s why we love speeches so much.)

In this module, you’ll learn the difference between informing and influencing, as well as how to write a speech that makes an impact on the audience.

The Speech Writing System Module 2

Module 2: Planning your speech

Good speeches are strategic. The speaker knows exactly what they want to achieve and how the audience thinks and feels about their topic.

In this module, you’ll learn why you need to articulate your key message, how to understand your audience and what you need to know about the event and venue you’ll be speaking at.

The Speech Writing System Module 3

Module 3: Finding the perfect research

Without research a speech is just statements.

In this module, you’ll learn about seven different types of research that you can use in your speech, including stories and statistics. You’ll also learn where to find different types of research and incorporate research strategically in your speech.

The Speech Writing System Module 4

Module 4: Building Your Argument

Building your argument is the art of speech writing. It’s adding colour to your speech but not too much colour. It’s about choosing the right ingredients but making sure none of them are over-powering. It’s a fine balance. But if you get the colours right, if you get the ingredients right, if you get that balance right…What you will create is a compelling speech that makes a big impact on the audience.

In this module, we’ll look at what information you should include in your speech to nail the art of speech writing.

The Speech Writing System Module 5

Module 5: Structure your speech to take the audience on a journey

We’re often told to think of speeches as having a beginning, middle and end. But what’s powerful is what you choose to do with the beginning, middle and end of your speech.

In this module, you’ll learn how to use the beginning of your speech to set up your argument. How to use the middle of your speech to state your argument. And how to use the end of your speech to outline your vision.

The Speech Writing System Module 6

Module 6: Write an opening that hooks the audience

Your speech needs to hook the audience from the first few words.

In this module, we’ll look at why and how to start your speech with five different techniques, including starting with a story or starting by painting a picture of the industry or environment.

The Speech Writing System Module 7

Module 7: Write a killer conclusion

The conclusion of your speech is your final impression on the audience. The last opportunity to make an impact.

In this module, we’ll look at five closing techniques for your speech to help the audience imagine a better future and be motivated to make change.

The Speech Writing System Module 8

Module 8: Supercharge your writing style

The biggest of all the modules, this module is dedicated to supercharging your writing style and taking your speeches to that next level.

In this module, you’ll learn why you need to become a better thinker to be a better writer, the importance of creating a writing routine and how to write powerful sentences, as well as eight writing techniques to help you write speeches that make you sound like the inspiring leader that you are.

The Speech Writing System Module 9

Module 9: Strengthen your speech and polish your prose

Editing your speech is about much more than checking for missing words or spelling mistakes. If you want to really take your speech to that next level, you’ll have to review it and rewrite parts of it.

In this module, you’ll learn my 10-step checklist to help you edit your speech, strengthen your narrative and polish your prose.

The Speech Writing System Module 10

Module 10: Tips to speak with passion and authority

No speech writing course is complete without a few speaking tips. If you want to have an impact on the audience, you’ll have to speak with passion and authority.

In this module, I’ll run you through four Ps of public speaking — presence, personality, pacing and projection — and give you tips to master each of them.

Nicole’s course teaches you an easy-to-follow, methodical approach to speechwriting that you can confidently apply over and over. Don’t just write speeches that get the job done.

Sign up today and learn how to write great speeches that resonate with your audience or book in a discovery call to find out if this course is right for you. , why learn how to write speeches from me.

I wasn’t born a speechwriter. It’s a skill I had to learn. I read just about every book I could get my hands on. Textbooks about speechwriting, memoirs by speechwriters, books about how to become a better writer.

Then I landed my first gig as a speechwriter at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet — I was part of the team that wrote speeches for the Prime Minister. I was assigned a wonderful mentor and I squeezed every ounce of knowledge out of her. I asked her to tear my writing to shreds. Tell me, I begged her, how I can be a better speechwriter.

Since then, I’ve gone on to write speeches for two Australian Prime Ministers, other Government Ministers, high-profile Government leaders, CEOs and keynote speakers.

So, I know what it feels like to be you. Someone who wants to write speeches that make a big impact on the audience but don’t quite know how or where to start. In this course, I’ll share all my skills and expertise — my speechwriting tips and tricks — and guide you through the speechwriting process. I’ll help you write your speech with confidence and get your message heard.

Posey on NATO

In a recent letter, Catherine Kornek took issue with my vote for an amendment to push our fellow NATO allies to meet their membership obligations to defense spending. The amendment I voted for does not eliminate all NATO funding, but simply cuts U.S. funding for NATO’s program to acquire new facilities.

In 2014, all NATO countries agreed to commit 2% of their GDP each year to defense spending to ensure NATO’s continued military readiness. While the U.S. spends 3.49% of our GDP on defense, only 18 out of 31 member countries are meeting this goal, meaning it’s not a priority for 41% of NATO countries as they expect the American taxpayer to pick up the slack.

I support NATO and its mission. However, it’s not right that American taxpayers get stuck with the bill every year. Americans are being crushed by inflation, rising prices, and an uncertain economic outlook. I believe in putting the American people first rather than allowing other nations to take advantage of our generosity.

Congressman Bill Posey

True group of professionals

This letter is about taking an oath.  There are professionals that take their commitments seriously, whereas others seem to think it only a suggestion like some politicians.

I recently suffered severe abdominal pain and called 911. From that moment on I am thankful that the 911 staff, Fire and Rescue and the Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital professionals remained true to their pledge to their oath. All of these individuals provided compassion and competence that ensured my well-being.

A thorough medical examination revealed I needed surgery. In the operating room I noticed everyone wore a mask. During the COVID crisis wearing a mask was mandated, but there were some opponents who claimed it prevented focusing and communication. As a fact, everyone in the operating room were 100% focused and able to communicate effectively.

At the hospital I was asked some questions about my sexual orientation but was told I did not have to answer.  The purpose for these questions were to learn if I had a preferred pronoun or was transgender. This demonstrated a respect for one’s beliefs and emphasized what it means to have a choice.

My experience was with a small group of professionals, but I am confident that these actions reflect the corporate culture of 911, Fire and Rescue and Health First, plus all employees and volunteers take their oath of helping others very seriously.

I would not be here to write this letter without the love of my husband and the commitment of these professionals to their oath.

Haridopolos more than qualified

I am writing this in response to Mr. Stan Heinricher’s letter to Mike Haridopolos titled “Where does Haridopolos stand?” It is obvious Mr. Heinricher is a Democrat and as a Democrat, he is aware they have nothing positive to run on. I’m sure he thinks he is being clever in asking what he no doubt believes to be a ‘Got Ya’ question, asking ‘Who is the duly elected president of the USA?’ This is a pointless question that has nothing to do with the election. If he wasn’t a Democrat getting his news from one of the non-news channels, he would know there were and still are questions about the 2020 election. Even so, to ask the question is admitting the Democrats have nothing positive to show the American people. In desperation, they do as Mr. Heinricher did in his letter which shows nothing but panic.

One look at Mike Haridopolos’s past record and you will see he is more than qualified to fill the position being vacated by Bill Posey.

Robert A. Minor, Mims

Don't vote for those who limit voters

I’m not surprised, as reported in Florida Today, that the two write-in candidates in the race for Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections are associated with the term-limited county commissioners running for those same seats.Their questionable, yet legal, late write-in entries in the race(s) have served to eliminate over 200,000 Brevard voters from casting a ballot in the primary election.

Several years ago one of those county commissioners ended fluoridation in the Mims water supply, with no community involvement, and against  expert medical advice. Amid pushback,a survey was sent to residents. The majority that responded wanted a return to fluoridation. Many more, most likely busy raising their families, did not respond. The commissioner conveniently counted those non-responses as siding in her favor.

The other county commissioner recently proposed to defund the cost of sending sample ballots to all voters, and for the return postage for mail-in ballots. Fortunately the funding remained in the budget after bipartisan pushback. There are many voters, including those elderly, disabled and living alone utilizing mail-in ballots, unaware of the defunding/barrier-to-voting  proposal.

As I’m now unable to vote in the primary election, the least I can do is inform every voter I talk with of what is at stake. The choice could not be more clear of which candidates running for Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections will best serve the needs of our community.

Kathy Ojeda, Merritt Island

Straw poll results got it right

The FLORIDA TODAY article "GOP straw poll at candidate event yields some surprises" describes poll results for term limited county commissioners John Tobia and Rita Pritchett who are running against competent incumbents Tim Bobanic (supervisor of elections) and Lisa Cullen (tax collector) with Bobanic winning 412 to 66 over Tobia and Cullen defeating Pritchett 448 to 39.

The outgoing commissioners solicited write-in candidates to close the primary election to non-Republican voters.

They are also seeking to increase their county salary from $60,273 to $184,356.

The challengers were the worst performing county commissioners. Pritchett proposed removal of fluoride from county supplied Mims water supply based on quack anti-fluoride reports. Tobia proposed removing funding for mailed ballots, that help many voters, from the supervisor of election budget. Tobia also assisted then-Brevard School Board chair Matt Susin's proposal to redistrict the board in such a way that two board members he opposed would no longer live in the district they represent by proposing the County Commission appropriate $32,072 of American Rescue Plan Act money from his ARPA account to cover some of the costs of the change. Tobia also used discretionary money to support a proposal to create a city on Merritt Island which is not in the district he represents. The frequently voted for the worst proposals supported by the other.

One hopes Republican primary voters will recall their poor performance and vote for the incumbents.

Recently passed bills chip away at our rights

It should be alarming to anyone reading the recently passed House Bills. Your rights and rights of others are being curtailed.

HB 433 prohibits requirements for workers exposed to heat exposure. An unethical employer can then work an employee to death. We need rules and regulations to protect our agriculture and construction workers. HB 931 authorizes school chaplains ― does that allow any type of religious chaplain; even one whose beliefs you don’t hold? SB1264 adds history of Communism to required instruction in every public school. Children 6-8-years-old cannot absorb abstract concepts. This would be tantamount to brain washing at that age. SB 7002 would allow tentative school budgets not be published in newspapers only in school bulletins. I no longer have school age children but I want to know about where my taxes are going. This is an attempt to exclude newspapers from reporting the  news. HB 1291 ― what the heck is “identity politics”? I never knew that there was such a thing as “university prep programs”. What is this?

I’ve warned readers before and I warn you again. Be aware, be very aware. It could be your rights that will be compromised next.

Laura Petruska, Melbourne

Founding Fathers ensured we'd have no dictators

With the next presidential election looming, many people worry that the next president will be either one that will rule like a dictator or one that will take away our Second Amendment rights. Thanks to the Founding Fathers, neither of these scenarios will come true. The founding fathers were ingenious enough to give us a republic instead of a monarchy.

The smartest thing they did was to give authority for taxation and spending to congress instead of the president.  Without control of spending, the president cannot do very much harm. If herding cats is hard, getting 535 congressmen and senators to do any president’s bidding is nearly impossible.

So for those that worry there will be a civil war after the election, rest easy. The next president will be a harmless blowhard, thanks to the Founding Fathers foresight. Moreover, if we get it wrong in November, do not worry, we will fix our mistake in another four years instead of six years like in many other countries.

Angela Harris, Cape Canaveral

Closed out of primary? Change parties.

Another Primary Vote year and another onslaught of Democrats complaining about not getting the opportunity to screw with the Republican Primary Vote. They have such difficulty understanding that their outrage is easily addressed by changing their party affiliation to Republican, voting, and then switching back to Democrat. It’s really easy, although you do lose the opportunity to vote in the Democratic Primary. A small price to pay for ensuring the that Republicans are left with the worst candidate! A closed Primary is the best Primary!

Larry FitzGerald, Merritt Island

Actors should stick to the screen

Isn’t it interesting how our well known movie and TV actors and actresses who have lived a “fantasy Life” for most of their lives, suddenly become political experts and feel they are qualified to tell everyone how and for whom they should vote.

But it doesn’t stop there, they are also financial and medical experts who will lead you down the primrose path. I guess they think they can all be Ronald Reagans, doctors, and lawyers. After all, they have “played” those parts all their careers. They probably even spent the night at a Holiday Inn.

I wonder what Will Rogers would have said if he met them?

Thomas E. Johnson, Palm Bay

Viable independent candidate left out

The American Experiment is in jeopardy. Our election process has been hijacked. Our democracy is crumbling. The independent presidential candidate I support won’t be in the first debate because he doesn’t qualify. Who is he and why didn’t he qualify?

If you read The Ne w York Times , Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is an anti-vaxxer conspiracy theorist. If you’re a supporter, he’s the hero who gave his best speech to date at the Nixon Center Presidential Library this month ― a fervent call to protect our constitutional rights and return to a time when America was strong from within.

Kennedy didn’t qualify for the debate because Biden and Trump have usurped the Commission on Presidential Debates’ protocol. Kennedy finished four polls with more than 15%, but falls short of 270 possible Electoral College votes because the debate will be held well before September 6th when all states have closed their ballots. Kennedy is suing, alleging flagrant violations of the Federal Elections Commission.

43% of Americans identify as Independent and the first major independent presidential candidate since Ross Perot is being shut out. We’re no longer the “silent” majority and we’re ready to heal our country. Will Trump and Biden steady this goal or will they continue the vitriol that keeps us locked into the two-party system? Kennedy says, “I think if people vote for a candidate out of hope, out of inspiration, I’m gonna win the race.” I’m choosing hope this November.

Dana Pinney, Merritt Island

A dilemma for Biden voters

From Webster New Explorer dictionary: democracy n, 1: government in which the supreme power is held by the people. 2: political unit with democratic government-democrat n: adherent of democracy.

Today's Democratic Party as exemplified by the Biden administration is antithetical to the above definitions. The Biden administration is contrary to democracy; it is opposite in character, nature, and position; therefore, mutually opposed to democracy.

Our Founders in the Federalists papers argued against a Democratic form of government because it could lead to majority rule . Instead they constructed a form of government of the People, by the People and for the People based on the Constitution and establishing a Republic. And, the establishment of a central government with limited-enumerated-powers based on the Constitution including Amendment 10, which is the foundation of the Constitutional Republic that is the United States of America.

Democrats whine that if elected, Trump will destroy our democracy. That is only correct in the context of destroying Biden's authoritarian ― governing-by fiat-"democracy "― facade; and replacing it with Trump's Constitutional Federal Republic.

This poses a dilemma for Biden-voters: Will Biden’s feckless democracy and feebleness earn him sympathy. Or will the People, worn out by his lapses, conclude that he would not be able to keep any job in America, except President of the United States?

Charles McRae, Sr. Melbourne

Doesn't want to vote for Trump, but...

People ask me if I want to vote for Trump in the upcoming election, and I have to say no.

I do want to vote for a secure border, and protection of our First and Second Constitutional Amendments. I want to support our allies around the world and to not pay homage to our enemies. I want an administration that is not a laughingstock and one that will protect the USA from our enemies. I want to stop Iran from funding terrorists. I want an economy without unreasonable inflation and without federal regulations that hamstring small businesses. I want to de-weaponize our Department of Justice and stop the mainstream media and social media from obeying a political party. I want the USA to be respected around the world and feared by our enemies.

Yes, these are the things that I want to vote for.  How do I shape my vote to get these things?  My vote will go to the conservative candidates, and yeah, I’m gonna have to vote for loudmouth Donald Trump because he is the person that can make these things happen.

Bronny James, son of LeBron, joins father with Lakers

NEW YORK — Years of speculation have finally ended. Bronny James, the eldest son of Lakers star LeBron James , indeed has a home in the NBA , on his father’s team.

Bronny James, one of the most highly scrutinized amateur basketball players of the last decade, was taken 55th overall Thursday night in the NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. The selection capped 12 long months of guessing about James’ place in the game, which included questions about whether he could compete professionally following a cardiac arrest.

“My dream has always just been to put my name out, make a name for myself, and, of course, get to the NBA,” James said at the NBA Draft Combine in May.

We know and have to respect that LeBron has a decision about his opt-out, and I'm sure he and his family and his agent will deliberate what they're going to do there and of course, he has freedom to decide whatever's best for him and his family. But if it worked out that he was on our team next season, NBA history could be made and NBA history should be made in a Lakers uniform."

Per team source to The Athletic

LA Clippers will sign SF Trentyn Flowers as an undrafted free agent.

John Hollinger

And now, the after-party: Teams will be working the phones with undrafted players for 2-ways and summer league commitments. Under the old format, FO staffers were up until the wee hours of the morning; the new, humane draft schedule should let them finish at a respectable hour.

Shams Charania

Undrafted Clemson big man PJ Hall has agreed to a two-way contract with the Denver Nuggets, per his agent, Matt Bollero. Hall had significant second-round interest, but chose Denver, which didn’t have a second, as his best situation.

Eric Koreen

To John Hollinger's point, it is no surprise that Masai Ujiri wanted to take the first-ever pick from the NBA Academy in Africa. Ujiri is from Nigeria and has been helping Africa through Basketball Without Borders and his own charity, Giants of Africa, for two decades.

Ujiri has been monitoring the process of the Basketball Africa League closely. Ulrich Camoche played just three games in the BAL and is the youngest player in the draft. He doesn't turn 19 until December.

The final pick is a pure stash, as the Knicks traded all the way down to the last pick in the draft and then selected German big man Ariel Hukporti. Because two picks in the second round were forfeited, the 2024 NBA Draft is now over.

What Ulrich Chomche brings to Toronto

Toronto jumps into the 57th pick to select Ulrich Chomche, a serious developmental prospect straight out of the NBA Academy in Africa. I don't want to say "two years away from being two years away," but Chomche is almost certain to be a multi-year 2-way while he refines his game in the G League.

The New York Knicks selected 22-year-old Melbourne United center Ariel Hukporti with the 58th and final pick.

The Athletic NBA Draft analyst Sam Vecenie on Hukporti: Ariel Hukporti is not going to be for everyone, but I can see certain organizations being interested. It all depends on how you value bigs who perform the nonnegotiable aspects of being a big at a high level versus how you value upside to do more. Hukporti is in the former camp. He’s an awesome rebounder and good rim protector, and I think he can play in drop coverage in the NBA. He plays incredibly hard, and he’s willing to be physical. There’s no ego to his game. But I don’t see a ton of value beyond that. Offense must be simple for him with transition play, screening, rim-running, offensive rebounding and dunking. I don’t see much potential to shoot or score outside of 10 feet. He gets far too sped up in terms of processing on offense to be a high-level passer.

However, I do like Hukporti more than recent international second-round center picks Tristan Vukčević (42nd to Washington in 2023), Khalifa Diop (39th to Cleveland in 2022), Karlo Matković (52nd in 2022) and Marko Simonovic (44th in 2020). Hukporti is a potential backup center if he can just improve his processing ability, overall precision and general skill level a tad on offense.

Round 2, No. 57: Toronto Raptors draft Ulrich Chomche

The Toronto Raptors selected NBA Academy Africa center Ulrich Chomche with the No. 57 pick.

Chomche was ranked No. 82 in The Athletic 's Sam Vecenie's top 100.

In arguably the least surprising selection of the 2024 NBA Draft, the Lakers drafted Bronny James Jr., the son of Lakers superstar of LeBron James. It’s a monumental moment that marks the first time a father-son duo have been active NBA players — and potentially the first time a father-son duo has been teammates, depending on what happens with LeBron this summer. Bronny, 19, is a 6-foot-2 3-and-D guard who will likely spend most of next season in the G League. After suffering a cardiac arrest last summer, it’s a miracle Bronny was able to play basketball again, let alone continue pursuing his dream of playing in the NBA. He has a ways to go as a prospect, but the Lakers are revamping their player development staff and strategy, and are confident they can maximize his potential.

In theory, this selection should solidify LeBron’s return to the Lakers, whether in the form of him optioning into his $51.4 million contract or opting out and re-signing. At the same time, LeBron and his agent and Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul — who is also Bronny’s agent — have denied that the two are a package deal. Only time will tell the truth. Regardless, this is a historic moment and another example of the Lakers going above and beyond to cater to their superstars, which is a considerable point of pride for the organization.

Anthony Slater

The Warriors traded cash to reacquire the 52nd pick and drafted Boston College center Quinten Post, per league source. That officially hard caps the Warriors at the second apron. They are now unable to go over it this season, which was the plan regardless, but it is notable as they enter the weekend with dreams of a big trade and with some Chris Paul and Klay Thompson business to figure out.

What Kevin McCullar brings to the New York Knicks

What Kevin McCullar brings to the New York Knicks

(Jamie Squire / Getty Images)

I wasn't sure McCullar would get drafted because of all the concerns about his myriad injuries, on top of the fact that he's a poor shooter and one of the oldest players in the draft. His basketball IQ and defense at least make him interesting on a 2-way, although it's possible that New York's ongoing tax apron dance pushes him into a roster contract for the rookie minimum.

Round 2, No. 56: New York Knicks draft Kevin McCullar Jr.

Round 2, No. 56: Phoenix Suns draft Kevin McCullar Jr.

(Photo: Jamie Squire / Getty Images)

The New York Knicks selected 21-year-old Kansas wing Kevin McCullar Jr. with the No. 56 pick.

The Athletic NBA Draft analyst Sam Vecenie on McCullar: It comes down to the shot. If defenders must play Kevin McCullar honestly from distance, the rest of his game as a smart drive-and-kick player and intelligent cutter opens up enough to play a complementary role on offense. If the shot isn’t there, it’s hard to imagine his drives being impactful, as teams sagged off him as he spaced behind the 3-point line. That would also impact his high-IQ cutting ability if someone is there waiting for him instead of honoring the threat of his jumper. McCullar will defend in any scheme. He's an impact guy who can play physical, switchable defense and be available to scramble around. He also makes winning plays and is willing to get on the ground for loose balls to create extra possessions.

It’s simple: If you think the jumper will improve and McCullar will stay healthy, it’s reasonable to have a first-round grade on him. Unfortunately, he’s done neither of those things throughout a significant sample of his collegiate career, so I couldn’t get to that level.

Shocker of shockers! Bronny James is going to the Lakers! Who could have foreseen such a thing? LeBron James gets to be on the same team as his son, which would be the first time in NBA history this has happened, and the Lakers presumably eliminate any residual risk of James walking as a free agent his summer.

What Anton Watson brings to Boston

What Anton Watson brings to Boston

(Mike Mulholland / Getty Images)

I didn't expect Watson to get drafted, but this is a defensible late pick because he's a good defender who can play the 4. Watson could potentially soak up some of the minutes filled by Oshae Brissett this season, as the latter opted out of his deal for the coming season to become a free agent.

Round 2, No. 55: Los Angeles Lakers draft Bronny James

Round 2, No. 55: Los Angeles Lakers draft Bronny James

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Bronny James, the eldest son of Lakers star LeBron James, with the No. 55 pick.

The Athletic NBA Draft analyst Sam Vecenie on James: We need to be upfront about this: We would not be talking about James as an NBA prospect if not for his father. He is nowhere near ready for the NBA. He’s at least two years away if every single thing goes right with his development in the next couple of seasons. For him to get the development he needs on the ball and to iron out his consistency as a shooter, he must spend the next two years in the G League. To me, that’s not a worthwhile investment given that his upside is something in the ballpark of a rotational 3-and-D guard. That upside is littered with potential landmines.

I couldn’t rank him outside of the top 75 on my board because he’s young, athletic and clearly has excellent basketball IQ in addition to a great motor on the defensive end at 19. If this goes right, you can see an outcome that is similar to Devin Carter. Still, he is outside of the range of players whom I have two-way grades on in this class. I have an Exhibit 10 grade on Bronny and think he would have been much better served heading back to school to get the reps he needs offensively.

Round 2, No. 54: Boston Celtics draft Anton Watson

Round 2, No. 54: Boston Celtics draft Anton Watson

(Photo: Chris Gardner / Getty Images)

The Boston Celtics selected 23-year-old Gonzaga wing Anton Watson with the No. 54 pick.

The Athletic NBA Draft analyst Sam Vecenie on Watson: Anton Watson is one of my sneaky favorites in this class, and I have a two-way grade on him. I think he can defend within an NBA scheme right away and has potential to add a lot of value on that end of the court if his offense improves enough to keep him on the floor. He’s switchable and long, plus has great strength and good hip flexibility to stay on-balance in space. His help defense is sharp, and he is a good scramble defender. Offensively, I don’t love his skill package, even if he maintains his ability to cut and finish around the rim. Shooting is the key for me. There are some signs of Watson becoming a capable shooter, as he made 41 percent on limited attempts this year. But it’s hard to buy into his jumper becoming a consistent NBA weapon given that he turns 24 this year and has always been a low-volume attempter.

If he can improve his shooting to the point where he consistently hits corner 3s, his defense may be valuable enough to stick in the NBA. That will take some time for his jumper to come around. Still, I’d be willing to bet a two-way deal on expediting that process, because if it does, Watson has some value in the NBA.

WikiLeaks’ Assange pleads guilty to publishing US military secrets in deal that secures his freedom

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (AP) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange pleaded guilty to obtaining and publishing U.S. military secrets Wednesday in a deal with Justice Department prosecutors that secures his liberty and concludes a drawn-out legal saga that raised divisive questions about press freedom and national security.

The criminal case of international intrigue, which had played out for years in major world stages of Washington and London, came to a surprise end in a most unusual setting with Assange, 52, entering his plea in a U.S. district court in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands. The American commonwealth in the Pacific is relatively close to Assange's native Australia and accommodated his desire to avoid entering the continental United States.

The deal required the iconoclastic internet publisher to admit guilt to a single felony count but also permitted him to return to Australia without any time in an American prison. The judge sentenced him to the five years he'd already spent behind bars in the United Kingdom, fighting extradition to the United States on an Espionage Act indictment that could have carried a lengthy prison sentence in the event of a conviction. He was holed up for seven years before that in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

He smiled slightly as U.S. District Judge Ramona Manglona imposed the sentence, pronouncing him a “free man."

The conclusion enables both sides to claim a degree of satisfaction. The Justice Department, facing a defendant who had already served substantial jail time, was able to resolve — without trial — a case that raised thorny legal issues and that might never have reached a jury at all given the plodding pace of the extradition process. Assange, for his part, signaled a begrudging contentment with the resolution, saying in court that though he believed the Espionage Act contradicted the First Amendment, he accepted the consequences of soliciting classified information from sources for publication.

Jennifer Robinson, one of Assange’s lawyers, told reporters after the hearing that the case “sets a dangerous precedent that should be a concern to journalists everywhere.”

“It’s a huge relief to Julian Assange, to his family, to his friends, to his supporters and to us — to everyone who believes in free speech around the world — that he can now return home to Australia and be reunited with his family,” she said.

Assange arrived at court in a dark suit, with a tie loosened around the collar, after flying from Britain on a charter plane accompanied by members of his legal team and Australian officials, including the top Australian diplomat in the U.K.

Inside the courthouse, he answered basic questions from Manglona, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, and appeared to listen intently as terms of the deal were discussed.

He appeared upbeat and relaxed during the hearing, at times cracking jokes with the judge. While signing his plea agreement, he made a joke about the 9-hour time difference between the U.K. and Saipan. At another point, when the judge asked him whether he was satisfied with the plea conditions, Assange responded: “It might depend on the outcome,” sparking some laughter in the courtroom.

“So far, so good,” the judge responded.

The plea deal, disclosed Monday night in a sparsely detailed Justice Department letter, represents the latest — and presumably final — chapter in a court fight involving the eccentric Australian computer expert who has been celebrated by supporters as a transparency crusader but lambasted by national security hawks who insist that his conduct put lives at risks and strayed far beyond the bounds of traditional journalism duties.

The criminal case brought by the Trump administration Justice Department centers on the receipt and publication of hundreds of thousands of war logs and diplomatic cables that included details of U.S. military wrongdoing in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Prosecutors alleged that he teamed with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain the records, including by conspiring to crack a Defense Department computer password, and published them without regard to American national security. Names of human sources who provided information to U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan were among the details exposed, prosecutors have said.

But his activities drew an outpouring of support from press freedom advocates, who heralded his role in bringing to light military conduct that might otherwise have been concealed from view and warned of a chilling effect on journalists. Among the files published by WikiLeaks was a video of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack by American forces in Baghdad that killed 11 people, including two Reuters journalists.

The indictment was unsealed in 2019, but Assange’s legal woes long predated the criminal case and continued well past it.

Weeks after the release of the largest document cache in 2010, a Swedish prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Assange based on one woman’s allegation of rape and another’s allegation of molestation. Assange has long maintained his innocence, and the investigation was later dropped.

He presented himself in 2012 to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he claimed asylum on the grounds of political persecution, and spent the following seven years in self-exile there, welcoming a parade of celebrity visitors and making periodic appearances from the building’s balcony to address supporters.

In 2019, his hosts revoked his asylum, allowing British police to arrest him. He remained locked up for the last five years while the Justice Department sought to extradite him, in a process that encountered skepticism from British judges who worried about how Assange would be treated by the U.S.

Ultimately, though, the resolution sparing Assange prison time in the U.S. contradicts years of ominous warnings by Assange and his supporters that the American criminal justice system would expose him to unduly harsh treatment, including potentially the death penalty — something prosecutors never sought.

Last month, Assange won the right to appeal an extradition order after his lawyers argued that the U.S. government provided “blatantly inadequate” assurances that he would have the same free speech protections as an American citizen if extradited from Britain.

His wife, Stella Assange, told the BBC from Australia that it had been “touch and go” over 72 hours whether the deal would go ahead but she felt “elated” at the news.

After the morning court hearing, Assange left Saipan by plane around midday headed for Australia, where relatives were waiting to be reunited with him.

Assange on Monday had left the London prison where he has spent the last five years after being granted bail during a secret hearing last week. The plane carrying him and Australian officials landed for refueling in Bangkok en route to Saipan. A video posted by WikiLeaks on the X platform showed Assange staring intently out the window at the blue sky as the plane headed toward the island.

“Imagine. From over 5 years in a small cell in a maximum security prison. Nearly 14 years detained in the U.K. To this,” WikiLeaks wrote.

Tucker reported from Fort Pierce, Florida, and Durkin Richer from Washington. Associated Press writers Colleen Long in Washington, Napat Kongsawad and David Rising in Bangkok, Jill Lawless and Brian Melley in London and Rod McGuirk in Melbourne, Australia, contributed to this report.
