What It Takes to Give a Great Presentation

  • Carmine Gallo

presentation work family

Five tips to set yourself apart.

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

I was sitting across the table from a Silicon Valley CEO who had pioneered a technology that touches many of our lives — the flash memory that stores data on smartphones, digital cameras, and computers. He was a frequent guest on CNBC and had been delivering business presentations for at least 20 years before we met. And yet, the CEO wanted to sharpen his public speaking skills.

A family tree is a hierarchical chart that details the connection between members of a family . You can create your own family tree in PowerPoint by using one of Microsoft's many hierarchy style SmartArt graphics. Here's how.

To get started, open PowerPoint and navigate to the "Insert" tab.

Insert tab in PowerPoint

In the "Illustrations" group, click "SmartArt."

SmartArt option in Illustrations group

The "Choose a SmartArt Graphic" window will appear. In the left-hand pane, click the "Hierarchy" tab.

Hierarchy tab

You'll now see a small collection of hierarchy SmartArt graphics. For standard family trees, the " Organizational Chart " option is ideal. However, you can choose whichever SmartArt graphic works best for you.

Select the chart you would like to use by clicking it.

Standard heirarchical chart

Once selected, a preview and a description of the chart will appear in the right-hand pane. Click "OK" to insert the chart.

Insert button for chart

With the chart added to your presentation, you can start entering the names of the family members in each respective box. Do this by clicking the box and typing their name. The text will resize itself to fit the boxes automatically.

You can delete boxes you don't need by clicking the box to select it and then pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

You can also add additional boxes below or above certain positions. To do this, highlight the box by clicking it.

Select box within box

Next, click the "Design" tab in the "SmartArt Tools" group.

Design tab

In the "Create Graphic" group, click the arrow next to the "Add Shape" option.

dropdown arrow next to add shape option

A drop-down menu will appear. The option you select from the menu will depend on where you want to place the box with respect to the currently selected box. Here's what each option does:

  • Add Shape After: Adds a box to the right, and on the same level, of the selected box.
  • Add Shape Before: Adds a box to the left, and on the same level, of the selected box.
  • Add Shape Above: Adds a box above the selected box.
  • Add Shape Below: Adds a box below the selected box.
  • Add Assistant: Adds a box between the level of the selected box and the level below.

In this example, assuming our fictional character Bryon had a child, we'd use the "Add Shape Below" option.

Add Shape Below option

A box will now appear below our selected box.

Added box below selected box

Once the box is placed, enter the name of the respective family member. Repeat these steps until your family tree is complete.

You can also tweak the design or change the color of the chart. Click the chart to select it and then click the "Design" tab. In the "SmartArt Styles" group, you'll see a range of different styles to choose from, as well as the option to change colors.

Click the "Change Colors" option to show a drop-down menu, then select the color scheme you like best.

Next, choose a style you like from the lineup in the "SmartArt Styles" group. We'll use the "Inset" option.

Your chart will take on the selected color and style.

Family tree example

Play around with the styles and colors until you find one the works best for you.

Creating a family tree is an exciting thing, but it's always a collaborative effort. You can ask family members to collaborate on the presentation with you to ensure that no family members are left out. And remember to share the presentation with your family once the family tree is complete!

How to work on a group presentation

Working in a group can be a great way to tackle complicated tasks or share unique knowledge. When it comes to illustrating your team’s results to an audience, it can be tricky to navigate how to pace your presentation and who gets to speak, among other factors. Check out these tips for how to start a presentation speech, how to conclude a group presentation, and everything in between.

How to do a group presentation

Some people thrive working in groups , while others prefer to tackle projects by themselves. Balancing all these differing personalities is one of the key skills to ensuring that your presentation goes smoothly:

Tell your story with captivating presentations Banner

Designate roles and presenting order to team strengths

The clearest way to do set presentation roles, and the order of these roles, is to set them early in the process and based upon the strengths of your group members. Designate roles based on certain skillsets and to keep from duplicating efforts. For example, having one or two people work exclusively on designing your PowerPoint presentation can streamline the process. Depending on how long your presentation is, you can assign everyone on your team three to five slides to discuss.

The importance of practicing

In addition, it helps to rehearse your presentation multiple times to iron out any kinks and build confidence. Practice your presentation together as a group so everyone can be prepared in front of your audience. Here, communication is key, scheduling regular meetings and clearly delegating tasks ensure everyone is on the same page.

How to start a group presentation speech

Just like the rest of your presentation, it helps to have just one person speak at a time. Assign the role of introducer to someone on your team. You can also choose to designate someone as the narrator who can both start the presentation, introduce team members, and finish in the conclusion.

Ensure that they clearly state the purpose of your presentation and provide an overview of what you’ll cover. You can also start with a compelling hook or an intriguing question to grab the audience’s attention. Introduce each member of your group and their roles and expertise to establish credibility and cohesion.

How to conclude a group presentation

At the end of your presentation, it helps to summarize the key points of your presentation and reiterate your main message so that your audience can retain as much information as possible. End with a strong closing statement or call to action to leave a lasting impression on your audience. Thank them for their time and invite further discussion or questions.

Mastering the art of group presentations requires effective collaboration, enough time for preparation, and a confident delivery. Play to your group’s strengths, give everyone plenty of time to speak, and value everyone’s contributions equally. Check out more tips for how to create an effective presentation , how to make group projects go smoother , or how to connect with virtual audiences .

How to Make a Very Good PowerPoint Presentation About Yourself in 2023 (+ Video)

Learn how to make a presentation about yourself in PowerPoint. Use this handy technique for company presentations, sales pitches, or even school projects.

Presentation About Myself

Creating a presentation about yourself may seem like a daunting task. After all, talking about yourself is a nerve-racking experience for even experienced speakers. But when you take the time to prepare and plan ahead, you can nail it.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to prepare a good presentation about yourself . We’ll cover tips for introducing yourself, preparing your who am I presentation, incorporating your accomplishments, and more.

How to Quickly Make an About Me Presentation With PowerPoint PPT Templates (Video)

Giving an about me presentation can be stressful–especially if that presentation is about yourself. An “about me” presentation is easier with templates. Learn more in this short video:

For even more tips on how to make a presentation about yourself, keep reading the tutorial below.

How to Prepare a Good Presentation About Yourself

With proper preparation and planning, you can easily create a great creative self-introduction PPT presentation. Here’s how:

1. Decide Which Information to Include in the Presentation

powerpoint about me template

The first step in creating an about me presentation is to decide which information you want to include. While this may be a presentation about you, that doesn’t mean you need to include your whole life story. Only choose to include information that’s relevant to the audience.

If you’re giving an about me presentation in a business conference, focus on your skills and education. Explain how they’re relevant to the topic. If you’re giving a who am I presentation in a local community meetup, then it makes more sense to focus on your involvement in the community.

2. Prepare & Design the All About Myself PowerPoint Presentation

Before you create the all about myself PowerPoint presentation, write the contents first. Once you know which information to include, put it in bullet point format to make it easier for your audience to follow.

Once you’ve prepared the content, start designing your about me presentation in PowerPoint. The easiest way to design your presentation is with a premade PowerPoint template.

Agio PowerPoint Template from Envato Elements

3. Create Your Introduction

Your introduction will be the first thing your audience will hear. As such, your introduction slide about yourself needs to pique their interest and make you feel relatable. This will build trust with your audience. It’ll also help you keep the audience engaged throughout the who am I presentation. Plus, it’ll make you more memorable long after the presentation is over.

A great way to kick off the introduction to your creative self-introduction PPT is to tie yourself to the topic and then tie the topic to the audience. Start by stating your name and job title and then share a random or a fun fact about you. Then, transition into the main part of your presentation about yourself.

4. Sell Yourself & Talk About Your Accomplishments

One of the hardest parts of your all about myself presentation is selling yourself and talking about your accomplishments. An easy way to do this is to highlight the results you’ve gotten for your clients. Accompany them with testimonials on your about me presentation slides.

You can also share your accomplishments and skills by providing value first. Then, talk about how you got there before transitioning into the actual accomplishment list.

5. Adapt Your About Me Presentation for Different Lengths

Be sure to tweak and adapt your presentation for different lengths. For example, a one-minute presentation about yourself is enough to state your name and job title and share a relevant fact about yourself. A five-minute presentation allows you to include more information, such as your professional achievements or your related work.

It’s a good idea to inquire about the length of time you’ll have available. Plan your presentation for that time slot.

6. Engage the Audience Before the Start

Turn your audience into active participants.

Engage your audience before you start the all about myself PowerPoint presentation. You can do this by:

  • telling a story related to the presentation itself
  • sharing a statistic from your industry
  • mentioning a compelling quote
  • asking the audience to introduce themselves

This turns your audience into active participants. They’ll be more likely to stay engaged throughout the about me professional presentation.

7. Give the Self-Introduction Speech

Once you’ve introduced yourself and gotten your audience engaged, it’s time to give the self-introduction speech. During this part, make eye contact with your audience. Keep the about me presentation informative without bragging.

Refer them back to the introduction slide about yourself or the handout for any extra information. This way you can keep your about me professional presentation succinct. Keep some relevant information for later parts of the presentation. Revealing everything at once will make your presentation less interesting.

8. Nail the Conclusion

You’ve hooked your audience with a great introduction slide about yourself, you gave the talk and kept your audience engaged. Now is the time to nail the conclusion. Start by asking your audience if they’ve got any questions and encourage them to start the discussion.

Once you’ve answered their question, let them know what’s the next step and what they should do. Be sure to include this information on the final slide as well as on the handout.

9. Establish a Personal Connection With Your Audience

A connected audience is an engaged audience.

A personal connection with your audience will make them trust you more and remember you and your all about myself PowerPoint presentation. A few ways to establish a personal connection include:

  • sharing a few fun facts about yourself
  • asking your audience to share their name
  • using humor to break the ice
  • maintaining eye contact throughout the presentation

10. Practice With a Friend

To make sure that your who am I presentation goes smoothly, practice it with a friend. Not only will you be able to deliver your presentation without awkward pauses, but your friend or coworker can give you valuable pointers.

Practice your about me professional presentation well in advance to have plenty of time to prepare.

11. Make Them Laugh

Adding humor to a presentation about yourself can make you more relatable.

We’ve already mentioned using humor to break the ice and to establish a personal connection with your audience. Humor makes you more relatable and can make any topic more interesting. Use humor sparingly and tastefully, otherwise your jokes will miss the mark.

12. Keep Your Audience In Mind

Your about me presentation should be tailored to your audience. For example, if you’re delivering your presentation in a formal setting with a corporate audience, keep the tone professional.

Get familiar with your audience before you start preparing your about me slide template. This knowledge can serve as your guide. It’ll help you decide which information you should include. Plus, you can decide what style and tone of voice to use. Understanding the audience is a must before including humor and cultural references in your all about myself PowerPoint presentation.

13. Show Your Passion

Show your passion. Everyone has a passion for something, whether it’s your job, your hobby or a cause you care about. When you show passion, people see you as more relatable. This helps form that personal connection and establishes trust, especially if they share your passion.

Think about how your passion relates to your professional achievements as well. This can serve as an unusual but more memorable way to deliver your presentation and talk about yourself.

14. Pay Attention to How the Presentation Looks

Use a professionally designed template such as this one from Envato Elements

Sure, the presentation is about you. But that doesn’t mean that how it looks is unimportant. You want to make a good impression. The best way to do that is by using a professionally designed template such as those available from Envato Elements.

So, if you haven’t already done so, switch your information over to a professionally designed about me PowerPoint. You’ll learn more about professionally designed templates in the next section.

How to Make an About Me Presentation With PowerPoint Quickly

Now that you know the basics of what should be included in your about me presentation, let’s go through the steps of actually creating it. The easiest way to start is with a premium template. For this tutorial, I’ll use the Amarish PowerPoint Template .

amarish template

It’s a modern and clean design with 30 slides and five color variations for a grand total of 150+ slides.

1. Decide on Your Slides

Delete a slide

As mentioned earlier, the Amarish template comes with 30 slides, but chances are you won’t need all of them. The first thing you should do is delete unnecessary slides. You can easily delete a slide by right-clicking on it and pressing Delete Slide .

2. Customize the Title Slide

Customizing the title slide

Once you’ve decided on the slides you want to keep, take some time to customize the title slide. You’ll want to include your name and a nice profile photo of you. To customize the text, double-click the title and then enter your name. To add your photo, click on the picture icon and select a photo from your computer. Then, press Insert .

3. Add Your Content

Adding content to your About Me presentation

The next step is to add your content to the presentation. Like the title slide, all you’ve got to do is double-click text, press CTRL+A to select all of it, and then enter your text.

As you’re entering the content, you can also customize the fonts used in the presentation about yourself. Simply select a different font from the drop-down menu.

4. Highlight Your Achievements With a Timeline Slide

Use a timeline to highlight your achievements

Make sure to include a timeline slide to highlight your achievements. This is a great way to showcase important dates and milestones in your career.

The Amarish template comes with a stunning timeline slide that’s easy to customize. All you’ve got to do is edit the text and the years to match your milestones. If you wish, you can customize the color used to represent the milestone by selecting the circle and selecting Format Shape . Then, set the Fill option to your preferred color.

5. Customize the Style

Customize the style and colors of your presentation

The last step is to customize the style of your presentation. The easiest way to do this is to change out the colors used in your presentation about yourself. All you’ve got to do is right-click on a colored shape and select the Format Shape option. Then, choose your preferred color for the Fill color.

Or click on the Design tab and then press the down arrow on the Variants tab and hover over Colors . Choose a different color theme to quickly change colors throughout the presentation.

How to Start a Presentation About Yourself (8 Quick Design Tips)

One of the best ways to start a presentation about yourself is to start with a premade presentation template designed for PowerPoint. The benefit of working with an about me PowerPoint template is that you don’t have to start from scratch. This means you’ll be able to create your about me professional presentation much faster.

PowerPoint templates come with various slide designs that you can use to share information. Just customize the design with your text and your choice of colors and fonts.

presentation work family

Once you’ve got a PowerPoint template to use as a starting point, there are a few design tips to keep in mind so you can create a good presentation about yourself:

1. Create a Visual Hierarchy

A visual hierarchy is where you arrange the elements by priority. When you arrange the elements on your about me slide template by importance and relevance, you create a logical structure for the information on your slide.

Creating a visual hierarchy helps your audience understand your main ideas and follow your topic.

2. Use Unique Fonts

presentation work family

On Envato Elements, many about me slide templates come with unique fonts that you can download. Also, Envato Elements has thousands of unique, downloadable fonts.

Use fonts to create a specific mood or meaning. People are used to repeatedly seeing the same default fonts, so using a unique font makes it more memorable.

3. Keep Text Down to a Minimum

Resist the temptation to include all the information on your slides. Not only will this overwhelm your audience, but you also run the risk of your audience getting bored as they’ve read what’s on the slide and are now waiting for you to move on to the next one. Share the main idea on the slide and then elaborate in your speech.

4. Increase the Font Size

Keep in mind that your about me professional presentation will most likely be viewed on a screen or a wall. And not everyone will have a seat that’s front and center. So, you need to increase your font size to at least 28px so even those who are further away can still read what’s on the slide.

5. Mind Your Photos

Crisp, clear images are an important part of a PowerPoint about yourself .

Use high-quality photos. You’ll want to make sure that your photos aren’t blurry and are well-lit so everyone can see the subject of your photo.

6. Ensure There’s Plenty of Contrast

For best practices, make sure there’s enough contrast between your slide background and the text. Black text on white background works well and maintains legibility. This will ensure that everyone can read the contents of your presentation.

7. Be Careful With Colors

presentation work family

When used right, colors can add wonderful accents to your presentation about yourself .

Use colors that reflect your personal brand. But don’t go overboard as too much color will distract your audience. Use color as an accent in headings or to add a border around your page instead of as a full slide background.

8. Reduce Your Use of Bullet Points

presentation work family

Bullet Points have been a staple for a long time in the presentation world. They’re a great way to add visual interest. But now they’ve gone out of style. There are other ways to add visual interest.

When designing your about me slides, try not to use too many bullet points. If you’ve got information but don’t know how to present it without bullet points, know that there are other tools you can use. One of the tools you can use in your about me presentation is icons. They add visual interest to your slide and can look clean and simple. Icons also anchor information while making it quickly digestible.

The pros and cons of a family member joining your team.

Hiring a family member can bring both significant benefits and challenges to your team

In many businesses, the idea of hiring a family member can arise for various reasons. It may be a family-owned business where involving relatives seems like a natural progression, or a growing startup where trusted hands are needed, and who better to trust than family?

Sometimes, during times of crisis or rapid expansion, family members may step in to fill crucial roles quickly. Additionally, you might be asked to recommend someone to fill a job opening, which can lead to considering a family member for the position. While bringing a family member onto your team can offer a mix of advantages and challenges, it’s a decision that requires careful consideration to ensure it benefits both the business and the familial relationship. Here are two reasons for and two reasons against having a family member as part of your team.

1. Enhanced Trust and Loyalty

One of the primary benefits of having a family member join your team is the enhanced trust and loyalty they bring. Family members are likely to have a deep commitment to the success of the business, knowing that their work directly impacts the family’s well-being. This inherent trust can lead to a more cohesive and dedicated team environment, as their loyalty to the family often translates into a strong work ethic and a willingness to go above and beyond in their role.

Additionally, the shared family values and understanding can create a sense of unity and purpose within the team. This can foster a positive work atmosphere where everyone feels aligned with the company’s goals and mission. The bond of trust can also facilitate open and honest communication, leading to better problem-solving and decision-making, which ultimately benefits the entire organization.

2. In-depth Knowledge of the Business

Furthermore, family members often have an in-depth knowledge of the business, especially if they’ve been involved in it from an early age. This familiarity with the company’s operations, values, and history can be incredibly valuable. They understand the business’s nuances and can quickly adapt to their role, making the onboarding process smoother and more efficient.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Their background knowledge can also help in maintaining continuity and preserving the company’s culture. Family members are likely to have a long-term perspective and a vested interest in the business’s sustainability and success. This can be particularly beneficial in family-owned businesses, where preserving legacy and tradition is important. Moreover, their intrinsic motivation to see the family business thrive can lead to a more driven and resilient workforce, contributing positively to the company’s growth.

3. Potential for Nepotism and Favoritism

However, one of the significant downsides of hiring a family member is the potential for nepotism and favoritism. Other employees might perceive the family member as receiving preferential treatment, which can lead to resentment and decreased morale. This perception can undermine team dynamics and create an environment of distrust and dissatisfaction.

Favoritism can also lead to unfair business practices, where decisions are made based on family ties rather than merit. This can hinder the company’s growth and innovation, as more qualified or suitable candidates might be overlooked in favor of a family member. Therefore, it’s crucial to establish clear and transparent policies to ensure all employees are treated equally and fairly. Having objective criteria for hiring and performance evaluation can help mitigate these issues and maintain fairness in the workplace.

4. Strain on Family Relationships

Moreover, mixing family and business can strain personal relationships. The professional challenges and conflicts that arise at work can spill over into family life, causing tension and disagreements. Disputes over business decisions, performance issues, or differing visions for the company can lead to personal conflicts that affect the overall family dynamic.

Maintaining a healthy balance between work and family relationships requires clear boundaries and effective communication. It’s essential to separate professional roles from personal ones to prevent work-related issues from impacting family harmony. Setting expectations and having open discussions about potential challenges can help mitigate these risks. By establishing ground rules and maintaining professionalism, you can help ensure that both family and business relationships remain intact, fostering a more stable and supportive environment.

Hiring a family member can bring both significant benefits and challenges to your team. Enhanced trust, loyalty, and in-depth business knowledge are strong advantages that can drive the company forward. However, the risks of nepotism, favoritism, and potential strain on family relationships must be carefully managed.

By weighing these pros and cons, you can make a more informed decision that supports both your business goals and family harmony. When considering whether to recommend a family member for a job, it’s crucial to evaluate both their fit for the role and the potential impact on team dynamics and family relationships.

White West Virginia couple accused of adopting Black children and forcing them to work ‘as slaves’

West Virginia deputies forced their way into a barn on the property, where they found two children in a small room.

A West Virginia couple are charged with human trafficking, child neglect, forced labor and more after, prosecutors allege, they adopted five Black children from a shelter to do forced labor and live in deplorable conditions.

Jeanne Whitefeather

Jeanne Whitefeather, 62, and Donald Lantz, 63, are accused of adopting the children, ages 6 to 16, from a shelter for homeless and vulnerable youths, targeting them for forced labor specifically because of their race, according to the 16-count indictment.

“It alleges human trafficking, human rights violations, the use of forced labor,” Kanawha County Circuit Judge Maryclaire Akers said of the indictment, according to West Virginia Metro News . “Human rights violations specific to the fact that these children were targeted because of their race and they were used basically as slaves from what the indictment alleges.”

Donald Lantz

Whitefeather and Lantz are being held at South Central Regional Jail in Kanawha County on $500,000 bail, according to jail records. They both pleaded not guilty this month. Whitefeather’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Lantz, who, according to court officials, is representing himself, could not be reached for comment.

Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies said they found the children in October during a welfare check at the couple’s home in Sissonville. They said they forced their way into a barn on the property, where they found two children in a small room.

“The children had no means to exit the barn on their own, no running water, no bathroom facilities, and were obviously deprived of adequate hygienic care and food,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement at the time. It said they then found a “small child” locked inside the main home alone.

The two children in the barn, ages 14 and 16, said they had been locked inside for about 12 hours when they were found and were forced to sleep on the bare concrete floor, according to the indictment. Court documents said that the children were dirty and had a strong body odor and that the 14-year-old had “open sores on his bare feet.”

“Neighbors also reported that the children were forced to perform farm labor and were not permitted inside the residence,” West Virginia Metro News reported, citing the filing.

During the hearing, according to The Associated Press , Whitefeather’s attorney, Mark Plants, said that there was a key inside the shed where teens were found and that there was “just a plain and simple misunderstanding about what is going on here.”

Lantz arrived home hours later with an 11-year-old boy, and he led deputies to a 6-year-old girl who was staying with friends of the couple, according to WCHS-TV of Charleston.

The couple are accused of abusing the children initially at their 80-acre ranch in Washington state and then in West Virginia, where they moved after learning they were being investigated, Metro News reported .

The couple first posted their combined $400,000 bail, but a judge ruled this month that the bail was too low and raised their bonds to $500,000 each. Prosecutors said they believe the couple paid the initial bond through money they made from human trafficking at their Washington and West Virginia homes, which they have since sold .

“We believe that the family lived at those two residences while they were committing the crimes. That turned the residences from property into contraband,” Kanawha County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Christopher Krivonyak told NBC News.

“We said, ‘Judge, we want you to hold on to the money until we have a chance to litigate the claims. If we’re right, that money should go to the kids.’”

Editorial: Drop in L.A.’s homeless population shows efforts to house people are paying off

A man in a reflective safety vest approaches a tent at night.

Finally, the homeless numbers in the city of Los Angeles are going in the right direction.

The results of the 2024 point-in-time homeless count released Friday show a 2.2% drop in the population of unhoused people living in the city of Los Angeles, from 46,260 in 2023 to 45,252. That’s not a huge difference, but it is noteworthy and hopeful, especially considering that the 2023 figure was up 10% from 41,980 in 2022.

For the record:

11:40 a.m. June 28, 2024 An earlier version of this editorial incorrectly named the committee that L.A. City Councilmember Nithya Raman chairs. It is the Housing and Homelessness Committee.

No issue in the county and city of Los Angeles has been more fraught, costly and agonizing than trying to house and help the tens of thousands of people who find themselves living on sidewalks and in shelters. So it’s heartening to see that the strategy employed by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass seems to be working.

Editorial: Lack of housing is pushing more seniors onto the streets. That’s on all of us

A new study gives us hints why more older people are falling into homelessness, but the solution remains the same: more affordable housing.

June 24, 2024

Her Inside Safe program focuses on moving people from encampments across the city into interim housing, mostly in the form of hotels and motels, but also tiny homes. The county has a similar interim housing program called Pathway Home and also provides services to homeless people living in interim and permanent housing.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles County, the numbers are basically flat from the year before, down 0.27%, from 75,518 to 75,312. That’s not much, but it’s a big improvement over the 9% increase the previous year. It’s also encouraging that the number of chronically homeless people — those who have been homeless a year or more and have at least one disability, health condition or substance use issue — went down 6.8% from 31,991 to 29,823.

The fact that there is some progress after years — the numbers had continually increased since 2018 — is a result of city and county officials working together in a way that they hadn’t before, according to Va Lecia Adams Kellum, the head of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. For example, both governments declared homelessness an emergency.

Editorial: L.A. can’t become an affordable, livable city by protecting single-family zoning

By excluding single-family zones from affordable housing incentive programs, L.A. leaders are squandering the potential to transform the city into one that works for people of all income levels.

June 17, 2024

LAHSA reports that the county made a record 27,300 housing placements last year. That is remarkable, but people keep falling into homelessness for the first time and are replacing those who get housing.

Adams Kellum says the homeless numbers would be worse without various city and county services, along with rent subsidies and housing vouchers that allow homeless people to find places to live. Eviction protections have kept others from losing their housing. Also about 4,000 city-financed units of permanent housing for homeless people — including units financed through the city’s Proposition HHH bond measure — became available in the past 12 months, according to city housing officials.

The most dramatic change found by the 2024 count is the shift between unsheltered and sheltered homeless populations. The number of people living on streets, in parks, riverbeds, cars or elsewhere outside dropped by 5.1% while the number of people living in temporary housing rose by 12.7%. It was even more dramatic in the city, where unsheltered homelessness dropped by 10.4% while the shelter population rose by 17.7%.

Editorial: Mayor Bass has no more excuses for delaying Venice Dell homeless housing

No more excuses for delaying the construction of Venice Dell homeless housing, Mayor Bass

June 3, 2024

No doubt this has a lot to do with Inside Safe. According to LAHSA, 2,754 people went through Inside Safe as of May. Slightly more than 500 of them were eventually housed permanently housed. The county’s Pathway Home had moved 629 people into interim housing as of April.

Inside Safe also appears to have shifted the demographics of homeless people somewhat. For example, the number of homeless people in South Los Angeles (including L.A., Compton and other cities) increased by 891. Adams Kellum, attributed much of that increase to the influx of homeless people in encampments from other parts of the city and county into affordable motels and hotels.

L.A. City Councilmember Nithya Raman, who chairs the council’s Housing and Homelessness Committee, says the decrease in unsheltered homeless isn’t only because of Inside Safe. She said the city added 3,000 new shelter beds since 2021 and also increased city-funded permanent supportive housing units.

All this is promising, but it is only making a dent in the problem. Not only does L.A. need more supportive housing for homeless people, it needs more affordable housing in general. A homeless person with a voucher in hand can’t use it if they can’t find an apartment. Getting homeless people into temporary housing and shelter is important. But moving people into permanent housing is what will make the homeless numbers go down significantly.

For the first time since 2018, homeless count finds fewer people living on L.A. streets

June 28, 2024

Long Beach, CA - Findings of the 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count reveal that Long Beach identified 3,376 people experiencing homelessness in January 2024, compared with 3,447 people in 2023. This number signifies a 2.1% decrease from last year-the first time the City has reported an overall decrease in homelessness since 2017. "I am very encouraged by the 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count numbers," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "For the first time in seven years, we are reporting a drop in overall homelessness, including a nearly 50% reduction in youth homelessness. It's clear that the work the City has done in addressing homelessness is beginning to turn the tide. These numbers let us know we are on the right track and must continue on in the work." After the homeless population in Long Beach jumped significantly following the COVID-19 pandemic, the City proclaimed a local emergency to strengthen the City's preparedness and ability to respond. The emergency, which was in place from Jan. 10, 2023, through Feb. 28, 2024, put into place policies and programs that provided immediate assistance and laid the groundwork for positive long-term outcomes.

Lights, camera, action: Students explore environmental health themes

Video project challenges undergrads to act out classroom concepts

Students crowd around a camera

Amelia Wong (left), Jade Davis, Zoe Chen, Alaina Rich and Nisha Saranat review their footage between takes.

While whipping up a chicken salad in the Nosker House kitchen, first-year student Jade Davis and her classmates can’t stop breaking character. They’ve set the scene: an unsuspecting patron takes a risk on a new restaurant just to get food poisoning—in the middle of a big day of studying, no less.

The group wrote the script and cast the roles, but they’d be the first to admit acting isn’t part of their 10-year plan. As students in  PUBHEHS 3310: Current Issues in Global Environmental Health , they were tasked with creating a short film or skit to highlight one of 18 topics they learned about in the classroom.

“It’s really easy to just put together a presentation and just talk about what the topic means, but that’s not the best learning experience,” said Associate Professor  Paul Rosile who teaches the class. “The creative video takes a lot of critical thinking, and it really makes them think about how they can creatively represent environmental health concepts and topics with their storyline, acting and dialogue.”

As good public health educators and practitioners know well, the field is only effective when its importance is clearly communicated – when complex concepts are distilled into easy-to-digest messages.

Davis's group chose to focus on food safety because they thought it would be something they could act out with resources at their disposal — access to a residence hall kitchen and a pre-packaged salad from campus dining. The class shed light on public health work that is invisible to most of the people it protects.

“I was introduced to so many topics that could be health hazards that I had never even thought of,” Davis said. “Like the food safety stuff... I didn’t know that much went into keeping food safe and keeping people safe. That alone has opened my eyes.”

Davis recently declared her major in public health with an environmental health specialization while taking PUBHEHS 3310, an online general education course primarily taken by first- and second-year undergraduates.

With more than 100 enrollees during the fall and spring semesters, Rosile knows not every student will walk away deciding to specialize in environmental health. Regardless of their ultimate academic destination, he wants them to leave with more awareness about how their communities are impacted by threats such as hazardous waste, and air and water pollution, and to be prepared to share that knowledge.

Rosile and  Margaret DiMaria , the college’s structural design coordinator, have been tinkering with the creative assignment over five semesters, figuring out how to best  leverage Ohio State’s virtual learning tools to provide students with a quality groupwork experience. Students use Teams to meet during synchronous sessions, which affords Rosile the opportunity to pop into breakout rooms and meet with each group.

The course is a “shining example of online instruction done thoughtfully,” DiMaria said.

“Paul is very effective helping students connect concepts to their everyday life. It allows students to see how public health affects them personally,” she said. “I see a lot of lightbulbs go off in this course.”

That was junior Stella Wineman’s experience. Last fall her group created a video with parallel storylines focused on two different families — one struggling with food insecurity and another who did not. While one family faced greater health challenges and had a hard time getting to a grocery store and accessing healthy foods, the other experienced less friction in their daily lives.

“We wanted to show the true disparity between two different households,” she said. “You’re able to see privileges that families who do not experience food insecurity have, which if you haven’t experienced food insecurity, can be eye opening.”

Wineman, who is majoring in international affairs and diplomacy and minoring in global public health, said she still notices when she drives through a community and hasn’t seen a grocery store in a while, even months after completing the course.

"It enlightened me about the places I’m going to and the things I’m seeing around me,” she said. “It makes me think about it a little bit differently.”
