Find up to date information on funding opportunities in the School of Chemistry .

Other funding sources

You could benefit from a funded PhD place along with enhanced training and development through our Centres for Doctoral Training .

Each year the University receives funding from the Research Councils for new postgraduate scholarships (Masters and research). You should check the relevant Research Council website for further information.

There are many trusts, charities and foundations that award partial funding for postgraduate study. There are huge numbers of applications for these sums of money, so you’ll need a strong case to make a successful application.

Postgraduate research fees are not regulated by the UK government so decisions on UK undergraduate fees do not apply to them. Our postgraduate research fees are set independently and reviewed on an annual basis. Where the research projects undertaken require a high expenditure on consumables, equipment or other resources an annual bench fee may be charged in addition to the academic fees.

Leeds University Faculty of Social Sciences Doctoral Scholarships for researchers from UK Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic groups

The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Leeds, is inviting applications for the next round of its doctoral scholarship scheme for UK Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic groups to undertake postgraduate/PhD research within the Faculty. Three scholarships are available this year.

The Faculty is inviting applications from candidates from UK Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic groups currently underrepresented within postgraduate research.

Scholarship holders will have access to world leading facilities and supervision, and to research centres which shape the research and innovation agenda within and beyond the social sciences. All postgraduate researchers in the Faculty are members of the Social Sciences Graduate School , bringing together a socially, culturally and intellectually diverse community of doctoral researchers, in an interdisciplinary research environment geared to addressing global challenges. Our doctoral researchers also have access to bespoke training and support via the White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership.

These scholarships are available on either a 1+3 (Masters and 3-year PhD) or a +3 (3-year PhD) (or part-time equivalent) basis. Depending on the level of research training already achieved, and where applicants do not yet meet our entry requirements for PhD study, we can also support applications via the 1+3 scheme. This would include funding to undertake an appropriate Masters degree (MA, MSc, LLM) in the Faculty of Social Sciences in the first instance followed by the PhD.

Each scholarship will cover full UK research degree fees and a maintenance grant at current UKRI rates.

We aim to encourage a diverse postgraduate research community and develop a more inclusive pipeline for future academics and university leaders.

Doctoral scholarships for researchers from UK Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities

Equality, diversity and inclusion are central to the core values and ambitions of the University of Leeds and the Faculty of Social Sciences. We are committed to addressing different forms of intersecting inequalities in relation to our teaching, learning, research and broader engagement with society.

As part of our work in this area, we hope to help address the significant underrepresentation of ethnic minority students in postgraduate research and throughout academia with a funding opportunity for Faculty of Social Sciences postgraduate research applicants from UK Black, Asian and underrepresented ethnic minority communities.

For a period of up to five years beginning in 2022, we will be inviting applications for two new doctoral scholarship awards each year across the Faculty, covering full UK fees and maintenance at UKRI rates. There will be a total of 10 scholarships available over the course of the scheme.

This initiative aims to encourage a diverse postgraduate research community and help to develop a more inclusive pipeline for future academics and university leaders.

This scholarship is now closed for 2024/25 entry. Applications will open again in autumn for 2025/26 entry.

Online event

The Faculty of Social Sciences hosted an online information session for this scholarship in January. To find out more about about the initiative, entry requirements and what it’s like to research at Leeds, watch the recording on demand .

After leaving school, I did a foundation year in Fine Art from the University of the Creative Arts, and I still like to paint with oils in my freetime. However, I realized that I was passionate about the ideas that mould soceities and shape lives, and so decided to go to university. I originally intended on studying English Literature, but during undergraduate at the University of St Andrews (2009–2013) I discovered theology for the first time – the exploration of ideas about God and everything in relation to God from within a particular religious tradition. I paired this with modern history, as a way to understand how philosophical ideas, the scientific revolution, and Christian theology are interwoven in modern Western soceity to inform our beliefs about how we are, what matters in life, and how we should act. These questions continue to animate me.

I went to Princeton Theological Seminary (2013–14) for a taught master’s programme where I was enriched by reading and discussing some of the most important theologians in Western history – Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, Hans von Balthasar, and Karl Barth. After a year off, I started a PhD with Prof David A.S. Fergusson at the University of Edinburgh (2015–2019). I discovered a recent work in analytic philosophy of mind regarding the idea of panpsychism, and I decided to explore its implications for the doctrine of creation; how Christianity views God’s relationship to the world and how human should interact with the natural environment.

After compelting my PhD, I got my first job as a postdoctoral research fellow, and then a lecture, in science-engaged theology at the University of St Andrews (2018–2021). I worked on two large grants from the John Templeton Foundation, the St Andrews Fellows in Science & Religion and the New Visions in Theological Anthropology . At St Andrews, I developed and taught undergraduate modules on “Science, Religion and the Mind”, “The Problem of Evil,” “Holy Scripture, Sacred Earth: The Bible and The Environoment”, and “Saints and Cyborgs: The Imagination in Theology and Science”, as well as assisted in teaching on the taught postgraduate masters programme in Analytic and Exegetical Theology.

I was thrilled to join the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science at the University of Leeds in 2021. Since coming to Leeds I have mostly taught on the BA in Liberal Arts.

Research interests

I am a Christian theologian interested in interdisciplinary engagment with analytic philosophy and with the natural and psychological sciences.

My doctoral research and first book developed a vision of theological panpsychism , which pairs classical Christian doctrine (i.e. doctrine of creation ex nihilo, the incarnation, the resurrection of the body, etc.) with the metaphysics of panpsychism. Panpsychism is the idea that consciousness is not unique to human beings or even animals, but comes in gradients as a fundamental and ubiqutious feature of reality. I argue that this recent revival in panpsychism is something Christian theologians should welcome as way to articulate creation’s value and praise of the unique Creator. I have also published a short popular level book called Creation and Ecology introducing readers to the Christian doctrine of creation with Grove Books.

I then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in science-engaged theology at the University of St Andrews for three years. With Dr John Perry, I co-wrote a book on Science-Engaged Theology , exploring how this idea differs from previous trends in the field of science-and-religion, considering what it means for the standing of theology in modern research universities, and offering some guidelines for theologians wanting to use empirical studies as a resource within their work. You can find a special issue I co-edited in the journal Modern Theology on this topic, which gives concrete examples of scientifically engaged theological research.

My current research project is a monograph on exploring what neurodiversity, and autistic people in particular, can teach theologians and the church about what it means to be human, a child of God, and members of the body of Christ. I have published three articles on autism and theology to date:

 • ‘The Challenge of Autism for Contemporary Theological Anthropology,’ International Journal of Systematic Theology (2020)
 • ‘Autism, Doxology, and the Nature of Christian Worship,’ Journal of Disability & Religion (2021)
 • ‘Accountability, Autism and Friendship with God,’ Studies in Christian Ethics, Vol. 34, Is. 3 (2021).

I have also published on other topics, many of them beginning with “p”: pantheism, panentheism, participation, pnematology, and pica (ok, the last one really refers to an article looking at eating disorders more widely, not just pica). If you want to read more about these publications you can find my CV and many pre-publication drafts on my academia.edu cite.

Junyang Song, PhD Candidate

"My PhD study (Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing and Midwifery (Full-Time)) will focus on exploring the impact of lifestyle patterns on the cognitive health of older adults with cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM). The objective is to identify the risk factors associated with cognitive impairment, as well as the barriers and facilitators of behavioural changes. This research aims to contribute to the development of evidence-based lifestyle interventions in the future. I aim to establish a comprehensive theoretical framework to guide caregiving practices and self-care strategies specifically tailored to address both cardiometabolic multimorbidity and cognitive health. This study area has always intrigued me, and I am deeply passionate about delving deeper into it.

For several reasons, I decided to pursue my PhD studies at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. The school has a strong international reputation and offers a rigorous academic environment. It also provides world-class teaching, resources, and opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation.

My supervisors, Dr Sharon O'Donnell and Dr Frances O'Brien, are highly accomplished researchers in cardiovascular care, and value the integration of academic research with practical applications. My research aligns closely with the overall research strategy of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, particularly in the areas of innovation, ageing, and chronic diseases. I am looking forward to conducting independent research in the School, to explore cutting-edge problems in ageing and cardiovascular health.

Additionally, Trinity conducts important research projects, including the TILDA and IDS-TILDA cohort studies. Doctoral students can participate in these large-scale projects to gain a deep understanding of health issues in older adults. The international partnerships provide opportunities for collaboration and research exchanges with other top universities and medical institutions, exposing them to different views and best practices in nursing and healthcare.

This scholarship represents a pivotal achievement in my academic and professional advancement. It not only offers financial support and recognition for my research but also provides an invaluable opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the fields of nursing and health."

"My PhD in Nursing and Midwifery will focus on ageing, which is an important challenge globally, especially for countries with large populations such as China. While increases in longevity are to be celebrated, the increase in the older population is leading to a higher demand for health care and social care, as well as increased pressure on care resources and services internationally. China is seeking to learn from international experiences, to respond to challenges associated with an ageing society, an aspect of which is an increasing risk of unmet healthcare needs. Trinity is the host of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) , which is a large-scale, nationally representative, longitudinal study on ageing in Ireland. The Trinity Centre for Practice & Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) also has provenance in age related nursing and interdisciplinary research aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of health care services.

My supervisors are Professor Anne-Marie Brady and Dr Louise Daly. Professor Brady has over 30 years of clinical practice, education and research experience in innovation, mixed method research, chronic illness, health care management, and has gained significant understanding of health service delivery issues in both the Irish and international context. Dr Daly is an Associate Professor in Ageing and Community Nursing and her clinical, education and research interests are in care of the older adult, with experience in interpretive and review methodology. I have worked closely with my supervisors to develop my PhD proposal. This PhD proposal is aligned with the mission of the TCPHI and with Chinese health policy which seeks to re-configure services, to inform the development and optimisation of the delivery of care resources for older people to enable effective and integrated clinical care pathways.

We are grateful to the experts from both countries for their initial recognition of our research. This strengthens our confidence in further in-depth investigation. This also provides valuable development opportunities for my future career development and international perspective expansion."

Research opportunities

Dynamic risk prediction for patients with multiple myeloma.

One full scholarship is available in the Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research in the School of Medicine in 2024/25.

This scholarship is open to UK applicants and covers fees plus £19,237 maintenance. This fully funded PhD place provides an exciting opportunity to pursue postgraduate research in cancer clinical trials methodology within the Leeds Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit at the Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research. The Institute is an international leader in the field of clinical trials and the CRUK Unit is one of the largest in the UK being one of only 7 clinical trials units to receive a prestigious infrastructure award from Cancer Research UK. We conduct national and international early phase and late phase clinical trials specialising in blood cancers, treatment with radiotherapy, and colorectal cancer, and this PhD will integrate into these portfolios.

We invite applications from prospective postgraduate researchers who wish to commence study for a PhD in the academic year 2024/25 for the CRUK Clinical Trials Unit Scholarship. The award is open to full-time or part-time candidates (UK only) who meet the eligibility for a place on a PhD degree at the School of Medicine.

Background

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a cancer of the bone marrow for which there is currently no cure. Standard treatment recommendations for newly diagnosed myeloma patients usually consist of continuous therapy for life. Teams treating MM and their patients require a clinical prediction model that provide personalised prediction of risk at key clinical milestones along the disease-treatment pathway to aid collaborative informed decision making.

Current prediction models are mainly based on prognostic factors measured at baseline, generally at diagnosis or start of treatment [1,2]. Disease response, including minimal residue disease (MRD), is one of the strongest predictors of survival. Therefore, dynamic risk models which capture how risk evolves over the course of the disease may be informative for patients and clinicians. Dynamic prediction is a powerful approach to exploit the most recent information for obtaining more accurate predictions of further prognosis.

There are several methods to estimate dynamic risk including simple methods such as conditional survival [3], to more complex methods such as landmark analysis, time to event methods incorporating time-varying and time-dependent effects, competing risk models, multi-state models and joint modelling of longitudinal and time to event data [4,5]. More complex modelling allows both baseline and time-dependent characteristics such as repeatedly measured biomarkers to be incorporated in the risk model. This allows us to assess if risk factors retain their prognostic impact in those who have survived to a given time point or if accumulating information over time is more useful to improve prediction at specific time points.

Studentship

The overall aim of this project is to build and disseminate robust dynamic clinical prediction models based on multi-modal data assets generated as part of national UK academic clinical trials. These trials contain detailed patient level information on clinical, genetic and disease response variables including longitudinal repeatedly measured biomarkers.

The project will conduct a scoping review of methods to model dynamic risk and applications to myeloma. Informed by methods from scoping review, clinical predictions models for myeloma will be developed and applied. This will involve assessing if dynamic risk models improve predictive performance from static models, identifying the key landmarks in the treatment pathway where dynamic models are needed, internal and external validation of models and other methodological considerations. Methods to display and communicate personalised risk estimates will be developed.

Supervision

Day-to-day support will be provided by Dr Lesley Smith and Professor David Cairns and of the Leeds Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit, with expertise in the development and implementation of statistical methods in clinical trials and clinical prediction models. Co-supervision to gain clinical context will be provided by Dr Christopher Parrish.

References

Cook G, Royle KL, Pawlyn C, Hockaday A, Shah V, Kaiser MF, et al.
