Mumbaikar Movie Review:
Mumbaikar Movie Review -

Lakh lakh roz aake bas jaate hai, iss seher se dil lagake phas jaate haiâæ shola hai ya hai bijuriya, dil ki bajaria, Bambai nagaria. Remember these lines from Taxi No 9 2 11? It was a pretty spot on description for what many people call the ‘city of dreams’ – Mumbai! It is chaotic, it is a mess, but people still come here with eyes brimming with hope and an unfaltering will to make it work, no matter what. Santosh Sivan, in his film Mumbaikar, probably tried to capture this beautiful chaos that defines the city. Probably, because it is not quite what is conveyed till the end. In fact, the film continues to be a chaotic mess, thanks to the script and the editing.
The storyline of Mumbaikar follows three people who have come to the city in search of opportunities. While one (Hridu Haroon) wants to work in an AC room making 25k because it is something that’s looked up as prestigious at his home, another(Sanjay Mishra) wants to get better treatment for his son, while the third (Vijay Sethupathi) wants to be a gangster. A mistaken identity and an incident on a bus later, their paths cross with an unemployed-by-choice man (Vikrant Massey), an HR at a BPO (Tanya) and a dreaded don (Ranvir Shorey). What unravels is more chaos till it reaches a resolution.
Watch the trailer here :
The major problem with the film is how it is handled. It is helmed by Santosh Sivan, who has made a mark as a director. It is sort of really disappointing when you look at how talented the cast is and how the director has proven his mettle time and again and still messes up a film that could have been good.
The script does no justice to the characters and the very competent actors who play them. The audience never knows what drives them to do whatever they carry out. Except for Hridu Haroon, the other stars hardly get any backstory. The problem it creates is that the audience can never totally feel what the characters are going through and stays aloof! On top of that, the editing is not as smooth as we had expected. It jumps from one scene to another, making the entire film jumbled up. The result is a hotchpotch!
Performance wise, most of the actors are underutilised and their talents are wasted. This can be called Vijay Sethupathi’s debut in a Hindi film. He does infuse life into his character and induces genuine laughs with his performance. He tries to move beyond, but the writing severely holds him back. And it is true for the rest of the actors as well. I mean, if you have actors like Sanjay Mishra, Ranvir Shorey, Sachin Khedekar and Vikrant Massey and limit them with how their characters are written out, the severity of the injustice is humongous.

‘Mumbaikar’ movie review: Santosh Sivan’s remake of ‘Maanagaram’ is more grating than gratifying
Despite a spectacular vijay sethupathi, ‘mumbaikar’ is more like a pitch where the two ends behave differently, and works only when you stop taking the themes seriously.
June 02, 2023 01:26 pm | Updated 01:43 pm IST
Vijay Sethupathi in ‘Mumbaikar’
In hyperlink cinema, one expects the emotional pull of multilinear narrative structures to keep us invested till the strands come together to catch us off-guard. In director-cinematographer Santosh Sivan’s Mumbaikar, a remake of Tamil hit Maanagaram , there is so much reliance on editing to underscore that we are watching a hyperlink film, that the whole idea of generating nervous energy becomes gimmicky.
The tedium sets in from the beginning perhaps because six years have passed since Lokesh Kanagaraj announced his arrival with Maanagaram . The theme lacks novelty and the surprise element is wafer-thin. For all the claims of being an action-thriller, you could pretty much guess the next twist and the upcoming punch. The issues of acid attacks, discrimination against migrants, and standing up to injustice have been dealt with in such lopsided fashion that they hardly make you feel the import.
Moreover, like some of the recent remakes of south Indian films, Mumbaikar sounds like a dubbed film. Hridoo Haroon is cast as the migrant from Uttar Pradesh who loses his UP Education Board degrees in a skirmish, but his voice has a distinct south Indian twang. Hridoo might look like a fish out of water but there is plenty of talent around him to keep the boat afloat in choppy waters. As a rebel in love, Vikrant Massey tries hard to make sense of his character. So does the equally bright Tania Maniktala. But in the absence of quality in the writing, they can hardly inject any real energy to the proceedings.
But just when you are about to give up on the film, Sivan changes gears and Vijay Sethupathi makes an entry with a bevy of inside jokes delivered in his cutesy Hindi that made him such a darling in Farzi . Playing a gangster-in-making who bungles his first kidnapping assignment, the mercurial actor invokes Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan and even Marlon Brando to evoke mirth; with his accent, he could get away with the harshest of words with a straight face. As Vijay employs his unhurried charm, we stop taking the film seriously and start laughing at the scenarios that the film offers.
Having said that, it is not the kind of terrain that tests the acting chops of Vikrant and Vijay, or for that matter, the versatility of seasoned supporting actors like Sachin Khedekar, Ranvir Shorey, and Sanjay Mishra. Perhaps Vikrant is attracted to a role that for a change allows him to flex his muscles. The film marks his Hindi debut, but Vijay Sethupathi is a little too spectacular for the size of the film. As for Sivan, Mumbaikar might well count as yet another directorial venture that doesn’t match his stature as a cinematographer.

Mumbaikar Review: If you haven't watch the Tamil version, the unpredictability of Vijay Sethupathi starrer will be enjoyable. A good, one-time watch.
Mumbaikar Review : Big cities bring both advantages and disadvantages. The opportunities they offer are vast, but the sense of isolation that comes with being a part of such a city can be all-consuming – regardless of whether you are a resident or a visitor. The city spares none. With its central theme of mistaken identities and the predicament of those trapped in adverse situations, the characters in this Santosh Sivan- directorial, an official Hindi remake of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Maanagaram, learn the importance of kindness and gain valuable insights along the way.
At the very outset, Hridhu Haroon, in the role of a young man, who thrusts into the bustling metropolis from a small town, tells the HR (played by Tanya Maniktala), “If I embrace Mumbai as my own, the city, too, will count me as its own.” But, Mumbai, City of Dreams for some and not quite as welcoming for others, had other plans. Things go awry soon after in this urban thriller that spans over 48 hours and offers a glimpse into the lives of multiple characters who encounter a range of challenges.
Tanya’s boyfriend, played by Vikrant Massey, is a rebel to pursuing a decent and meaningful life. Hridu, meanwhile, gets mistaken for Vikrant and is beaten up by thugs and ends up losing his important documents. In another track, there is a slightly eccentric man (Vijay Sethupathi) who has his heart in the right place. He aspires to make it big in life, both in terms of wealth and fame, and joins a criminal gang in Mumbai with help from a friend. His first task involves kidnapping a young boy named Rahul from his school. In a twist of fate, he abducts the wrong boy who happens to be the son of a notorious criminal, PKP (Ranvir Shorey). Then there is a cabbie (Sanjay Mishra) who works at one of PKP’s businesses that rents out cars to the same BPO that Tanya and Hridhu work at. In the botched kidnapping, the stories coverage and the characters find themselves entangled in a situation involving ruthless gangsters and corrupt police officers.
It’s a potboiler with a good mix of action, drama, romance and comic relief. Vijay Sethupathi is effortless as a peculiar man with unique quirks but a compassionate nature. He does crimes to establish himself as a famous ‘Don’, but his conscience begins to betray him. He gets the bigger share of the punchlines and delivers a solid performance.
Vikrant Massey delivers a convincing performance as a rebellious man torn between his desire to do what’s right and his limited patience for those who cross him. He effortlessly transitions between a lovelorn romantic pursuing a scorned girlfriend and an angry guy willing to go to any lengths to seek vengeance when threatened. At the same time, Massey beautifully plays a compassionate citizen who lends a hand to help a stranded little boy reach home. Ranvir Shorey delivers a solid performance as feared gangster PKP, showcasing both his terrifying presence and his emotional depth as a desperate father on a mission to rescue his son. As the plot thickens, Shorey’s frustration grows and he delivers standout scenes that leave a lasting impact. Sanjay Mishra and Brijendra Kala (as a police sergeant) do justice to their parts, while Tanya has very little part in the whole script. Hridu makes up for his inconsistencies in the second half.
The parallel storylines in the film move swiftly between each other, but unfortunately, the dialogues fail to make a significant impact. At times, the accents are thick, taking away the clarity of the dialogue delivery, and overall, they fall short of the expected impact. The film falters in detailing that is supposedly meant to add to the quirky script. There’s a Bengali character thrown into the mix, who speaks surprisingly faulty Bangla, and then there’s a promiscuous woman, caught in a raid, who feels the need to cat-call a man while still at the police station. On the flip side, the inter-connections don’t feel forced, but reflect the reality of life in a metro, where the sheer population leaves enough room for misplaced identities and a comedy of errors.
If you haven’t watch the Tamil version, the unpredictability of the hyperlink thriller will be enjoyable. A good, one-time watch.
The film is currently streaming on JioCinema.

Mumbaikar Review: Vikrant Massey & Vijay Sethupathi’s Crime Drama Is Perfect Light Mood Weekend Entertainer
Bollywood industry has been quite intrigued with South Indian films and is often seen remaking them for the Hindi audience. From Bhool Bhulaiyaa to Drishyam, Rowdy Rathore, Singham and more, we have an endless list of South Indian film remakes which has not just won millions of hearts but have also ruled the box office and OTT platforms.
And now, another remake is making the headlines which has released today. We are talking about Santosh Sivan directorial Mumbaikar which happens to be a crime action thriller. To note, Mumbaikar happens to be the remake of the Tamil hit Maanagaram and has been the talk of the town for its interesting ensemble of cast.
As Mumbaikar has released after an immense buzz, the crime thriller drama came with an interesting storyline which will keep you hooked throughout. The story revolves around a kidnapping which went wrong and ended up creating a hilarious series of twists and turns. It all started with an aspiring gangster (played by Vijay Sethupathi) mistakenly kidnapping a Mumbai don's (played by Ranvir Shorey) son. And while he tries to make it up for the mistake, the child's escape ends up in a hilarious roller coaster ride intertwining the lives of four main characters.
Santosh Sivan has managed to capture the chaotic yet happening life of Mumbai city which has been a dream place for everyone and how it has the power to change anyone's life in no time. The direction is simply brilliant and manages to keep you hooked throughout with its multiple storylines running parallelly and later converging into a dhamkedar climax
Vikrant Massey looks cute in his boy next door yet bindaas avatar and his fearless avatar is surely a treat to watch. Besides, we can't miss out on Vijay Sethupathi's swag in his Bollywood debut. After all, he is a star for a reason and does complete justice to his character. While Sanjay Mishra and Ranvir Shorey's performances were on point and did add to the entertainment quotient, it was Hridhu Haroon's innocence as a small town guy lost in a big city that touched hearts and left us in awe. The guy clearly has a lot of potential
Final Verdict:
Well, it is undoubtedly an entertaining watch which its share of ups and down. But this humour infused crime drama and Santosh Sivan's impressive storytelling approach does make it a good watch. So, if you are tired of watching the regular stuff on TV and OTT and want to watch something refreshing where you don't have to apply much of the brain, Mumbaikar is a perfect option that can qualify for a masala entertainer weekend watch.

Mumbaikar Review: The Writing Does Not Fully Align With Vijay Sethupathi's Skills
Mumbaikar review: vijay sethupathi's first hindi film does nothing to eclipse what the versatile chennai-based actor achieved in the amazon prime web series, farzi ..
Vijay Sethupathi in Mumbaikar .(courtesy: YouTube )
Three disparate men who have just arrived in Mumbai with specific goals and another on the verge of quitting the city for good for reasons beyond his control constitute a gallery of perfunctorily interesting characters navigating life on the streets of the megalopolis in Mumbaikar .
The antics of these feckless men - they are all either on the run from someone or running towards something - do not, however, add up to much because director-cinematographer Santosh Sivan's whimsical and well-meaning tribute to Mumbai is way too erratic to hit the high notes with any degree of consistency.
Streaming on Jio Cinema, this direct-to-OTT release is a rigmarole that is as confounding as the city of Mumbai would be to anybody who is still finding his foothold in an urban sprawl that never sleeps. Mumbaikar, which starts out in the daytime, reaches its climax at night when the case of a kidnapped schoolboy keeps a couple of cops, a gang of criminals, the boy's father and sundry other blokes awake.
One middle-aged man (Sanjay Mishra) lands in Mumbai to start a new life as a taxi driver. A young lad in love (Hridhu Haroon) leaves his hometown and reaches the City of Dreams to look for a job in an information technology firm where Ishita (Tanya Maniktala) is the HR head. And a taciturn traveller from Tirunelveli (Vijay Sethupathi) is in Mumbai to fulfil a dream. He aspires to make it big as a gangster.
The job-seeker is hired by Ishita's company but he loses all his certificates when he is mugged in a case of mistaken identity. Talking of mistaken identities, that is a plot device that Mumbaikar resorts to all through its two-hour runtime as one character after another finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not surprisingly, nothing goes right for them - or for the film that they are in.
A jobless Mumbai boy (Vikrant Massey) - he asserts that he is unemployed by choice, not chance - is besotted with Ishita, who reminds him that she isn't a 1980s Hindi film heroine who would brook a stalker and eventually acquiesce to his entreaties.
Mumbai seems to be in the vice-like grip of Prabal Kant Patil alias PKP (Ranvir Shorey), a one-time fish trader who is now a dreaded mafia don with interests in many businesses, including a taxi service that supplies cabs to Ishita's company.
The paths of all these people cross when a gang of criminals deploys the gangster-in-the-making to kidnap a wealthy man's son from a school. He gets holds of the wrong victim and sets off a chain of events that unfold in the course of a single night. For the three outsiders groping for their way in Mumbai, their first day in the city threatens to be their last as all hell breaks loose.
The employment-seeking lover boy rides a cab whose driver, also a newcomer to the city, has no clue where on earth they are going. The mafioso - he knows the city like the back of his hand - is drawn out of his home as a crisis looms and a bunch of goons give him a right royal runaround.
And while the chaos is compounded with each passing hour, the pining-for-love jobless man is instructed by his policeman-uncle Sangram Shinde (Sachin Khedekar) to leave Mumbai immediately. The truculent guy has poured acid in a hoodlum's posterior, and with good reason, and the law is closing in on him.
Elements borrowed from many a genre - slapstick capers, gangster flicks, crime dramas and screwball actioners - are assembled in this messy mish-mash that does not yield the sort of percentage that the makers obviously expect from it. The film flits from one thing to another - the editing does not help matters - and often loses its way in a sea of incoherence.
Vijay Sethupathi's first Hindi film, Mumbaikar does nothing to eclipse what the versatile Chennai-based actor achieved in the Amazon Prime web series, Farzi. A poster of the Rajinikanth starrer Kaala (seen behind him in one scene) points to the character's essential mental makeup.
However, there is little else in the film that could help the audience understand the character's motivations. Sethupathi does his very best to deliver some moments of mirth, but the writing does not align fully with his skills. The screenplay does not allow him to ever go beyond half tilt.
Mumbaikar has at least two other veteran actors of proven mettle - Sanjay Mishra and Sachin Khedekar. They, too, suffer the consequences of being trapped in a script that does not volunteer enough information about where they have come from and why they are up to what they are up to.

Vikrant Massey, Tanya Maniktala and debutant Hridhu Haroon go through motions with varying degrees of success. Haroon, amid all the pandemonium, gives a good enough account of himself for the audience to want to see more of him.
Coming from Santosh Sivan, a filmmaker with no mean track record, Mumbaikar is a disappointment, a tepid caper film that fails to hit its straps.

Mumbaikar Movie Review | Jio Cinema
- June 2, 2023
Mumbaikar Movie Review: Jio Cinema is on fire; they are coming with back-to-back shows and films these days. One of the direct OTT releases on Jio Cinema is Santosh Sivan’s directed film ‘Mumbaikar.’ The film is around 2 hours long and is available to watch on Jio Cinema in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and some more dubbed versions along with subtitles.
The film is a dark thriller and is a kind of anthology film. It revolves around 3-4 characters. The film starts with the kidnapping of a child who is a gangster’s son. How the case and investigation will be common between all those three characters, the film tells you all. The film shows a youth from a village who has come to the city in search of a job, an aimless lover, and a gangster.
The film tries to make you laugh in many instances but fails badly. There are some really amazing performances, and Vijay Sethupathi looks brilliant, but still, the film lacks in terms of screenplay and cinematography. The film also lacks the thrilling element and looks flat. The film has moments of its own, but overall, it fails to make any impact. The music and the background music (BGM) of the film are also below average.
Vikrant Massey is average in his role, and he looks tired and dull. Vijay Sethupathi looks brilliant, and Sanjay Mishra looks good too. Tanya is brilliant as Ishita, and Sachin Khedkar was decent too. Ranveer Shorey shines in his role, but the best performance in the film was by Hridhu Haron. He is the star of the film, and he nailed it in his role.
I am giving the film 2 out of 5 stars. The film has nothing special, and I will not suggest you watch it. Jio Cinema has some great content and shows, and you may look at them if you are looking to watch something this weekend.
- Name Of The Film: Mumbaikar
