Ram Movie Review:
Ram Movie Review:

Rams review – Sam Neill and Michael Caton's unpretentious sheep farmers will move ewe
Don’t judge this warm, funny, tender and down-to-earth rural drama about odd-couple brothers by its garish marketing materials
T he poster for Rams depicts a perturbed-looking Michael Caton next to a smug-looking Sam Neill , both standing behind a sheep, which, like them, is staring into the camera. Going by this advert alone you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a bone-headed comedy about cack-handed country types and their livestock – something with a tagline like “they’re baaaaaad to the bone” or “just ewe and me”.
How wrong you would be. Rams is a lovely, even-tempered drama about men and rural life, gentle but firm of spirit, with a down-to-earth pith and a way of entertainingly and unpretentiously exploring potentially difficult subjects such as masculinity. Director Jeremy Sims and screenwriter Jules Duncan faithfully remake the excellent Icelandic film of the same name, which won best film in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes in 2015 and tells the story of two brothers who live on neighbouring sheep farms but haven’t spoken in many years.
In the Australian version, the protagonist Colin (Neill) is the more affable of the pair, a sensible chap with savoir-faire, who gazes upon his cattle with love and reverence, literally telling them how beautiful they are. Les (Caton) is quite the opposite: a stink-eyed “get orf my lawn!” type, with zero patience and a glowering disposition, prone to epic solo drinking sessions followed by marinating while comatose in the sun.
Handsomely shot by Steve Arnold in and around Mount Barker in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, with occasional roving drone shots that make the film look a little touristy, much of the drama takes place on the brothers’ farms, the MacGuffin arriving in the form of a terrible disease that infects one of Les’ prize-winning rams. Authorities decree that every sheep in the valley must be killed for the sake of containment, which means, in addition to the brothers losing their livelihood, the potential end of their prized bloodline.
A small group of local farmers meet and spitball ideas on how to react, with Les on the side (illustrating his outsider status) kvetching loudly, while preparing himself a scone. “They don’t know, do they?” he bellyaches, “they just come here and–” then he abruptly stops mid-sentence, upon discovering there’s no more cream left in the bowl in front of him.
Les never concludes that line. Sims chops the sentence off and lets it linger; lets the silence take hold for a beat or two. Usually scripts deliver neat lines with neat finishes, film-makers turning the loose threads of real-life into smooth contrivances. The incompleteness of this moment gives it something paradoxically interesting: a special kind of mundanity, and an imperfection that suits the film’s earthy tones. It is indicative of an experience that is not going to rush for you. Like the television series Rosehaven , similarly full of country air and wide open spaces, the audience will adjust to its tone and rhythms – and most likely find that adjustment process rewarding.
It isn’t clear where the plot of Rams is heading, particularly for those who haven’t seen the Icelandic film. That uninspiring poster, and a wishy-washy trailer stamped with a line of text reading “Where there’s a wool there’s a way” (groan) seems to indicate the brothers might do something to please the gods of genre algorithms, joining forces for instance in some kind of sheep-shearing competition and returning home triumphant, lugging a big golden trophy. But that is not the case at all.
Sims has learned from Grímur Hákonarson (who directed the original) important lessons about containing a film tonally, with few of the stark switches between “happy” and “sad” that made his previous feature Last Cab to Darwin a limited, dictatorial experience emotionally. At the heart of the picture are two very appealing performances from Neill and Caton, who feel even from early moments like real, lived-in characters, well cast to reflect their differences as actors. Caton has always been a bit scruffier and Neill a bit slicker. The former is the kind of bloke who eats rissoles and goes to Bonnie Doon for the weekend ; the latter looks good in a leather jacket .
The “neighbouring brothers who don’t speak to each other” setup could have felt like high-concept gimmickry, but it rings true in a funny sort of way. By contrasting geographic closeness with emotional distance, Sims explores a truth we are all confronted with: that there are certain things – particularly those involving our bloodlines and backgrounds – none of us can ever really escape; things that follow us everywhere even if we never move. In this respect I was reminded of director Clayton Jacobson’s dark comedy Brothers’ Nest , another film about starkly different siblings existing in the shadow of their parents – or in the words of one of the characters, another film about “family shit”.
The setup of Rams also develops into an interesting perspective on loneliness and masculinity, with messages blokes in particular may relate to: how men often shrink inside ourselves; how we so easily shy away from expressions of feelings; how we deploy various techniques to shield ourselves from the stabs of memory. See? I told ewe this wasn’t a dopey comedy about sheep. It’s funny at times – but also tender and touching: the cinematic equivalent of a gently moving turn of phrase.

‘Rams’ Review: Down Under Do-Over Injects Broad Comedy Into Icelandic Festival Darling
Sam Neill and Michael Caton star in this Australian remake of Grímur Hákonarson’s 2015 Icelandic dramedy, amplifying the film's underlying humor.

Nearly six years ago, “Rams,” a touching humanist drama from Iceland directed and written by Grímur Hákonarson, won hearts — and prizes — at the Cannes Film Festival. Now, in trots “Rams,” an Australian remake, directed by Jeremy Sims (“Last Cab to Darwin”). Adapted with winning cultural specificity by former newsman Jules Duncan, it’s longer and more broadly comic than the Icelandic version and boasts a tacked on, feel-good ending. Beloved Antipodean stars Sam Neill and Michael Caton play the two estranged brothers who must pull together to save what is dearest to them: their sheep.
Although they have not spoken to one another for 40 years, Colin (Neill) and older brother Les (Caton) Grimurson (a nod to the first name of director Hákonarson, as are the Icelandic sweaters the pair are first seen wearing) live on neighboring stud farms in a valley near Mount Barker, Western Australia. The spectacularly scenic landscape with its nearby mountains and beaches as well as baking hot summers and bush fires becomes a fateful character in the action.

Both brothers raise a breed of special heirloom sheep and are rivals in an annual competition for best ram. When Les’ flock shows signs of Ovine Johne’s disease (OJD), an incurable and highly contagious bacterial illness, the veterinary authorities decree that all the sheep in the valley must be destroyed. It’s a devastating blow for the local farmers, but the order hits hard-drinking, unruly Les and quiet, thoughtful Colin particularly hard, and they rebel against the rules in their own distinct ways.

While this setup follows that of the Icelandic version down to the terse notes that Colin sends to his brother via his clever sheep dog, it also expands the roles of some of the supporting players, including a widow (Asher Keddie) who lost her husband in a brush fire, her handsome, 20-something son Jackson (Will McNeill) and Jackson’s crush, Sally (Asher Yasbincek), the assistant to Cat (Miranda Richardson) the attractive local vet. Cat, an English expat, develops romantic feelings for Colin, but given his unwillingness to let anyone inside his ramshackle house where he has hidden a ram and three ewes, their relationship is mostly played for laughs.
Like helmer Hákonarson before him, director Sims presents the rigors of farm work, the plainness of his solitary protagonists’ lives and their deep affection for their sheep, but gives them a more comic tone. Also playing to the cruder humor of the Aussie context, there’s a running verbal and visual joke about the potency of the brothers’ well-endowed rams, and the buffoonish characterization of the representative of the Agricultural Department (Leon Ford) invites jocular scorn.
While the rampaging force of nature in the Icelandic “Rams” was a blizzard, here it is an out-of-control bush fire fought by volunteers throughout the valley, including Colin and Les. Along with the film’s humor, this element surely struck a chord with domestic audiences, making it one of the Oz box office hits of 2020.
Of course, the film’s main selling point is the particular chemistry of its two leads. It’s a delight to see the usually dapper Neill convince as a disheveled farmer, with his unshaven face, wild hair and utilitarian clothing. Meanwhile, Caton, with his baleful glare and drunken muttering, is utterly believable as the older, angrier brother.
On the tech side, the cinematography by Steven Arnold is attuned to both the beauty and danger of what nature brings, while the clever production design by Clayton Jauncey makes Colin’s bathroom the locus for multiple pivotal plot points. Despite some tragic events, the jaunty score by Antony Partos reassures that this iteration of “Rams” remains a comedy.
For the record, yet another remake is under way with the South Korean company Yong Film.

‘Rams’ Review: Ailing Sheep and Quirky Characters
This comedy-drama starring Sam Neill, Michael Caton and Miranda Richardson depicts a catastrophe for a farming community in Western Australia.
- Share full article
By Glenn Kenny
The rough, dirty life of Australian sheep farmers would seem an unlikely topic to yield much in the way of cinematic lyricism. Especially in a narrative involving sheep actually dying of a devastating disease. Nevertheless, “Rams,” rooted in a 2016 Icelandic movie of the same name, has its pastoral moments (mostly in its breathtaking views of Western Australian landscapes), not to mention raucous comedy.
The screenwriter Jules Duncan’s narrative, given a hemispheric switch from the Grimur Hákonarson original, is not generically unfamiliar. It’s a story of brothers at odds who are forced, after much resistance, to become brothers in arms.
Colin (Sam Neill), a taciturn type, shares land but not much else with his older brother, Les (Michael Caton), an angry type who’s more voluble than Colin only in that he likes to cuss people out. They live and work on two adjacent plots, which were once owned as one by their father. Their rams are of a special breed and, as a contest at the movie’s opening attests, are invariably the envy of the region.
Colin notices a problem with one of the prize specimens. A friendly local veterinarian (Miranda Richardson) confirms that there’s a rare but catastrophic disease at work. All the ovine beasts in the vicinity have to be liquidated, and the area quarantined for a couple of years.
Colin isn’t having it, and he secretes a few sheep in his house. Soon Les, with whom he hasn’t spoken in decades, gets wind of this — literally, as the odor increasingly attaches itself to and wafts from Colin’s place. Much of the movie’s comedy derives from Colin’s futile efforts to keep his animals hidden. And his new alliance with Les comes from what they need to do to keep those beasts alive.
Directed with a genial breeziness by Jeremy Sims, the movie negotiates emotional downshift and uplift with confidence. Some of the characterizations are unpredictably quirky — Les’s enthusiasm for the 1970s hard rock group Humble Pie is unexpected. The main pleasures of “Rams,” though, come from watching the three veteran lead actors play their eccentricities out.
Rated PG-13. Running time: 1 hour 55 minutes. In theaters and on Apple TV , Vudu and other streaming platforms and pay TV operators. Please consult the guidelines outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before watching movies inside theaters.

Vinaya Vidheya Rama movie review: Ram Charan, Kiara Advani’s action drama is an assault on the senses
There isn’t a single element in Vinaya Vidheya Rama which salvages the story from being a train wreck. And in the process, it crushes everything on its way, including the joy of watching a film.
There’s a scene in Boyapati Sreenu’s Vinaya Vidheya Rama , starring Ram Charan, where Raja Bhaiyya’s (Vivek Oberoi) henchmen tell a hapless bunch of government officers that except for vultures and death, nothing can reach the remote area where all of them are going to die. There are a bunch of dead bodies, of people who dared to stand up against Raja Bhaiyya, in the vicinity. But in all likelihood, I am sure that they died voluntarily after reading Boyapati Sreenu’s script. They all probably died of an overdose of suspension of disbelief. In another scene, Ram Charan says that he killed 300 people along the way. Maybe, they too wanted to die after reading the script, if there was such a thing in the first place.
It’s a miracle that Ram Charan himself doesn’t flinch while delivering his dialogues or believing in what he’s doing in the film. In that moment, Ram Charan is probably the bravest man around because he’s stuck in a situation where he knows that although he might emerge as a hero in the end, he is going to lose a lot of things that he earned with his recent film, Rangasthalam . Because, there’s no way one can justify a film like Vinaya Vidheya Rama . It’s an assault on your senses. This has got nothing to do with how loud the film is. That is the least of all the problems that plague the film. The tally of dead bodies keeps growing as the film progresses, but what Vinaya Vidheya Rama kills with all its brutality is the joy of watching an action drama. It says a lot about a film, when in 140 minutes of its runtime, there’s just one scene which grips your attention.
Surprisingly, there’s a decent plot beneath the dead bodies in this film, which could have been turned into a stage to narrate a revenge drama. In the beginning of the story, we are told that a bunch of orphans rescue a baby, and soon, they decide to stick together. Few years later, their youngest brother, Ram (Ram Charan), vows to protect the family against all threats, and their eldest brother, Bhuvan Kumar (Prashanth) goes on to become an IAS officer. The rest of the story is about what happens when Bhuvan is sent to Bihar to hold elections in the state and how it brings him face to face with a local don, Raja Bhaiyya (Vivek Oberoi).
The film has an intense conflict point, and it also has plenty of scope for drama and explosive action moments. But alas, none of that matters. The only thing that you are likely to remember is the sight of two heads flying in air only to be caught mid-air by vultures. It’s a masterstroke on paper, but it made me laugh out loud while watching that epic moment on screen.
Realism has absolutely no place in the world of Vinaya Vidheya Rama . This is a film where the hero would jump atop a train, travel from Dwaraka to the Indo-Nepal border, hop on a horse and reach the destination before the villain makes up his mind. I’m not making this up. The funniest moment in the film is a sound effect where the voice over goes - “You have reached your destination”. That had to be the quickest ride ever in the history of transportation. This is also a film where a snake dies after it bites a man. This is also a film where the camera zooms in on a woman’s body first, before showing her face, as part of her introduction scene. This is a film which finds humour in a woman kicking the balls of a man, quite literally.
Look, I get it…you are expected to look over a few fallacies while talking about a mass commercial film. But why would you want to defend a film like this? It has no respect for its audience, let alone the story it wants to say. It doesn’t know if the story unfolding on screen is the present or the flashback. Every actor and technician who has worked on this film deserves better. Perhaps, they know it too.
There are a few things that will never change - 1) Boyapati Sreenu saying ‘Babu…ready…Start Camera…Action 2) Sun rising from the East 3) Our enthusiasm to watch films. A film like Vinaya Vidheya Rama comes as a rude shock to that enthusiasm to watch films. If you haven’t watched the film yet, thank your luck and wish that it doesn’t run out sooner or later. The good thing is that there’s a way to start afresh. If you watched it on 11 January, wait for two days to light the bonfire on the day of Bhogi, and burn your memory of having watched this film.

If you’ve ever felt a visceral desire to see Sam Neill fondle sheep testicles and Miranda Richardson barehanding a sheep turd — and who hasn’t? — then fire up Rams on Hulu. It’s an Aussie adaptation of a 2015 Icelandic film about two sheep-farmer brothers who are long estranged despite living right next door to each other. One whiff of this one betrays the formula of quaint, provincial dramedies, although there’s always a chance it’ll upend such expectations.
RAMS : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
The Gist: Colin Grimurson (Neill) talks to sheep. “You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful,” he tells them as he herds them around his lovely Western Australia acreage. Perhaps you won’t be surprised to learn that he has more to say to sheep than to other people. It’s a lonely life out there even though his brother Les (Michael Caton) lives within spitting distance. They haven’t spoken a word to each other since the Mesozoic, lugging grudges around like balls and chains on their brains. Colin’s sheepdog finds a dead ewe and its abandoned lamb just over the fence, so he picks up the mewing baby, shoves it in the door to Les’ house and buggers off. As usual, they enter the local sheep breeder competition, and as usual, their Kalgan Horn rams are the two finalists. New vet in town Kat (Richardson) declares Les’ big boy the winner and neither of the Grimurson bros seem happy about it. They’re just a couple of inscrutable old fahhhts.
To be fair, Colin is less inscrutable next to Les, who’s a violent, possibly homicidal alcoholic. Tragedy strikes when Colin discovers that their prize flocks — and those of all the shepherds in the area — are infected with a disease requiring mass euthanization and the burning of facilities, e.g., the barn his and Les’ father built by hand 90 years ago. Kat does what she must and calls in authorities, including a glib government pissant who initiates a Dept. of Agriculture vs. Dept. of Angry Old Men subplot. Les blames Colin for this development, so he fires a few bullets through his windows. The local farmers think the near-eradication of all their work is overkill, and they definitely have a point, but what else can they do?
As Les gets arrested for resisting the feds, Colin euthanizes his herd himself. Horrific, sure, but it allows him to shepherd three healthy ewes and one heavy-testicled ram into the spare bedroom for a little secret breeding operation. To cover up the smell, he tosses some prawns in the rubbish bin and leaves the lid off, but that doesn’t dissuade Kat from stopping by for a sip of wine at Christmas. He keeps her out on the porch, because in the house, the sheep are getting on with a good holiday humping. So, inventory: outlaw sheep, simmering sibling feud and a painfully realistic third-act wildfire. Something has to give here, doesn’t it?
What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain hath wrought many of these type of earnest small-community not-quite-comedies. See also: Saving Grace , Waking Ned Devine and more recently, Wild Mountain Thyme .
Performance Worth Watching: In terms of Neill’s filmography, Rams isn’t exactly Jurassic Park or Possession . But he wisely sidesteps many gruff-old-bugger cliches to find the sensitive spots in his character, who’s clearly more than just a coot.
Memorable Dialogue: Kat nails Colin’s personality right off the bat when he drops by her office: “You’re a welcome distraction from fecal samples.”
Sex and Skin: So many closeups of sheep nards. So, so many. OK, it’s only three or four, but it feels like 10 too many.
Our Take: There are times when Rams comes perilously close to being Deez Sheep Nuts: Da Movie (or Ball Fondlers , the A-Team parody in the Rick and Morty universe). It’s not really about animal husbandry, but the subtext is loud and clear: If they can’t spend their time coercing sheep to f—, these two old coots would be even more miserable than they are now and their lives would have no meaning. There’s a scene in which Colin watches as his burlyboy ram mounts one of its harem, and the guy is delighted in a manner that borders on creepy voyeurism. It’s quite funny to be honest, and a nice bit of acting by Neill.
Otherwise, the film tends to hit its share of boilerplate story beats, from Colin’s warm friendship with the nice-lady vet to the inevitable resolution of the brotherly rivalry. Screenwriter Jules Duncan and director Jeremy Sims take a stab at topical relevance by including the modern environmental concerns or life in Western Australia — we’re all too aware of the wildfires that have devastated the country, the product of global climate change — but it feels only partially realized and tacked on, and it fattens the film’s runtime to a patience-testing 118 minutes. It’s not as funny as it could be, and the conclusion is an anticlimactic feelgood wheeze. But Neill and the supporting cast are strong enough in their well-considered performances to make them a genial bunch of country folk worth spending some time with, even when they’re casually handling the genitalia and/or leavings of farm animals.
Our Call: STREAM IT. Rams is a likeable enough slice of rural life to make it worth a watch, if your tastes tend to run mild.

'Rangasthalam' Review: Charan Steals The Show
Movie: Rangasthalam Rating: 3.25/5 Banner: Mythri Movie Makers Cast: Ram Charan, Samantha Akkineni, Anasuya Bharadwaj, Aadhi Pinisetty, Prakash Raj, Jagapati Babu, Amit Sharma, Pooja Hegde and others Music: Devi Sri Prasad Cinematography: R. Rathnavelu Editing: Navin Nooli Production design: Ramakrishna, Mounika Action stunts: Ram - Laxman Producers: Naveen Yerneni, Y. Ravi Shankar, Mohan Cherukuri Story, screenplay and Direction: Sukumar Release date: March 30, 2018
One film that has been generating lots of buzz for the last few months is Ram Charan and Sukumar’s “Rangasthalam”.
The film has generated a huge interest among film lovers, and of course Charan’s fans. Amidst high expectations, this rural drama set in the '80s has hit the screens.
Let’s find out if the film lives up to the expectations...
Story: In the 1980’s, in a fictional village called Rangasthalam in Andhra Pradesh, Chitti Babu (Ram Charan) leads a happy life doing agricultural work. He is partly deaf. He falls for the charms of the village belle Ramalakshmi (Samantha).
When his life is going smooth, trouble arises when his well-educated elder brother Kumar Babu (Aadi Pinisetty) contests for the gram panchayat elections against the ruling president (Jagapathi Babu).
Village rumour has it that the president’s men killed many people who tried to contest against him in the past.
Can he remain silent when Kumar Babu threatens to unseat him? The village politics turn murkier forcing Chitti Babu to take up the sword.
Artistes’ Performances: Undoubtedly, this is Ram Charan’s best performance of his career. Playing a deaf character is challenging for any artiste and it is even tougher for a mass star like Charan. He daringly accepted this role and put in his heart into the role of Chitti Babu, shutting the mouths of his detractors. Even when the film turns dull during the second half, he glues us to the screens with his performance. His terrific act is the real highlight of the film.
Samantha as village girl Rama Lakshmi, also does a terrific job. It's surprising to see her switching effortlessly into the role.
Aadi Pinisetty gets a prominent role and he does a good job. In the two important roles, Jagapathi Babu as village’s landlord and Prakash Raj as MLA Dakshina Murthy, have both given their best performances.
Anasuya as Rangamma is a surprise. She shines in this role.
Technical Excellence: Sukumar’s movies always carry high technical and aesthetic values. Though the film is set in 1985 in an interior village, the locales, the sets and the production design is stunning. Entire Godavari village is realistically recreated by art directors Ramakrishna and Mounika.
The ever-dependable Rathnavelu has also captured the rugged rustic beauty and the picturesque Godavari belt in an eye-catching manner.
But music is definitely the film's strength. The song “Yentha sakkagunnave” is excellently filmed. “Rangamma mangamma” has great verve. There are two bit songs too. Devi Sri Prasad has given best output with background score.
Action stunts are okay. Editing needs crispiness especially in the later part of the movie.
Highlights: Ram Charan Performance of all actors Music Production design Final twist
Drawback: Regular revenge theme Drags Inbetween
Analysis: With the very first scene that shows Ram Charan speeding his bicycle to save Prakash Raj from the road accident, the film takes us to the 1980’s rural area. Without taking much time, Sukumar establishes the story and the characters. We have a hero who has hearing problem. We have a village president who is evil and corrupt. We have a beautiful girl. And a well-educated brother of hero who wants to bring change in the village. The characters and their motives are established in the very beginning. Story is set. Conflict is created.
To hold the interest for two hours, Sukumar uses a back and forth narrative. In fact, the beginning and the climax part of “Rangasthalam” reminds us of recent Nani starrer “MCA”.
The conflict between a good young guy and the ruthless village president is seen in many films in the 1980’s. As the story is too familiar, Sukumar has focused on other elements.
Sukumar has not attempted anything novel in terms of plot, but he succeeds in bringing out best performances and transports us to the rural area of AP during the 1980’s.
Also, he has written the characterization of hero Ram Charan differently which is the main strength. Hero playing a guy with hearing problems is somewhat unusual. This handicap is effectively used in driving the story and screenplay. Every twist and turn in the film is based on this deficiency of the hero. But the politics shown here are too naïve and clichéd.
In earlier movies, Sukumar had indulged in mathematical equations and made audiences use their brains. Here he has chosen a simple story, regular situations, but this time he has indulged in over melodrama.
Jagapathi Babu’s menacing performance (he hardly speaks in the entire movie), Samantha’s fun role as Ramalakshmi, Anasuya’s characterization make a lot of difference to this regular story.
As said earlier, Sukumar puts more focus on creating mood: the village scene, the '80’s period, the dialects of the actors, the customs and the tirunallu… all are pitch perfect and create a fresh feel. Both his actors and technicians have put in their best work for this film.
The art work is exceptionally good. The camera work is beautiful. Though not all songs are catchy, Devi Sri Prasad has given one of the best outputs. Thus, the film works on these aspects and fails in presenting any new point.
Like in his previous movies, Sukumar begins well, but loses grip in the second half. While the first half of the movie has many moments especially the romantic track of Charan and Samantha, the second half is clichéd drama. Moreover, by the end of the movie, one gets 'heavy' feel by the runtime and melodrama.
Overall, “Rangasthalam” is not a regular mass film. Nor is the story different. It is all about performances and best production design. Ram Charan gets to show the world that he is a good actor too, apart from having good dance moves.
Bottom-line: Worth Visiting

James Ristas opens our eyes to the real and true story of how we got here in his short film Ramgog!
The world has fallen into darkness. The last woman (Emma Geller) and man (Kris Salvi) wander through the void abandoned by god. As the woman cries out to god for leaving them to starve in loneliness, they are approached by a simian-like celestial entity…Ramgog. Ramgog reveals the true nature of humankind and the next steps humanity should take should they choose to follow him.
First, I love the weirdness of Ramgog! The opening reminds me of the old religious arthouse films of long ago. Presented in black and white and on film, a homage to French “film d’auteur” our protagonists are in the void, not merely a darkened sound stage.
“Ramgog reveals the true nature of humankind and the next steps humanity should take…”
Emma Geller carries much of the film performance-wise and nails the seriousness of the strange situation. The appearance of Ramgog is one to behold and a throwback to the glorious low-budget costuming of 50s sci-fi. Ramgog wants to be taken seriously, which is the fun of the film.
My only qualm is that the short creates a world and vision for the future but lacks a much deeper meaning in life. What it suggests at the end merely breaks the surface of life, where I want it to go two or three layers down. If you’re going to create a new religion, you really need to address a few aspects of the nature of humanity that separate your religion from the others.
Ramgog! is an ambitious project that nails the tone and its tongue-in-cheek nature to get its point across.

Sita Ramam Movie Review: This Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur starrer presents outstanding plot turns
In the mid-1960s or thereabouts, Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer) fell in love with a stranger (Mrunal Thakur as Sita Mahalakshmi) after trading letters with her in the film Sita Ramam.
Title: Sita Ramam Cast: Dulquer Salmaan , Mrunal Thakur and others Director: Hanu Raghavapudi Run-Time: 154 Minutes Rating: 3.5/5
It has been more than a decade since love stories churned out by Telugu cinema have become eventless. Most of the time, plot turns are shallow and when there is a tragedy, it looks borrowed or forced. For a change, 'Sita Ramam' jettisons run-of-the-mill ideas to narrate a meaty story packed with rich emotions, flavourful execution, and haunting ideas. Even when it presents melodrama, it doesn't cry for attention.
In the mid-1960s or thereabouts, Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer) fell in love with a stranger (Mrunal Thakur as Sita Mahalakshmi) after trading letters with her. Twenty years later, the love story of Ram and Sita has been through a chequered journey full of twists and turns. Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) is in search of Sita and she figures out that she has to first trace Ram. In the process, she learns about Ram's edgy story which is a pack of unexpected incidents.
Hanu Raghavapudi pens a love story that is not over until it is over. That way, he makes things unpredictable. The tension inherent in how the romance between the Ram-Sita duo evolves keeps us invested without letting us demand frills.
The fusion of suspense and jaw-dropping execution is something this film excels at. Vishal Chandrasekhar's background score is lilting and intense, as the case may be. The songs (right from those tuned to montages and chartbusters like 'Inthandham' and 'Oh Sita Hey Rama') acquire noble contexts of their own. Their placement is never out of the place. The cinematography by the PS Vinod-Shreyaas Krishna duo is spell-binding, matching the standards of first-rate Bollywood films.
For a period drama, 'Sita Ramam' does look a tad too colourful at times. But the multitude of emotions, the air of whimsicality, and the ensemble cast lend the whole film a glorious aura. Some of the combination scenes between the different characters are written to elicit feelings of gloom.
Mrunal Thakur's is one of the loveliest performances by a female lead in recent times and there are no two ways about it. Her expressive eyes, her charming smile, and her graceful looks make her layered character look utterly believable. Dulquer Salmaan's classy performance makes this love story an affair to remember. The chemistry between the lead pair is so pure and pristine that anything less than extraordinary music and cinematography would have been greatly disappointing.
Rashmika Mandanna adds a layer of suspense to the script with her performance. Sumanth's Brigadier Vishnu Sharma and Jisshu Sengupta's character are neat. Shatru is good as Ram's fellow soldier, while Sachin Khedekar, Gautham Menon, Prakash Raj, Vennela Kishore and Tharun Bhascker are fine.
Indo-Pak conflict with Kashmir as the centre stage is a trope this film uses to give unusual situations and rousing moments. The action scenes are more about the underlying emotions rather than stunts.

2025 Ram 1500 pickup’s new engine and technology will surprise shoppers
AUSTIN, Texas — The 2025 Ram 1500 pickup will say goodbye to the beloved Hemi V8 engine and hello to more power, technology and driver assistance systems when the updated truck bows this spring.
The new Ram also introduces a new high-end trim level, Tungsten, with features like automotive-first Klipsch audio and 24-way power seats. We don’t have full details on pricing yet, but with a base price of $87,155, destination charge of $1,995 and a few option boxes left unchecked, the Tungsten may be the first Ram 1500 to flirt with six-figures out the door.
The 2025 also introduces Stellantis’ most powerful electronic architecture. Called “Atlantis high,” Ram says it’s faster, more secure and enables over-the-air software updates.
Key visual changes include new grilles with bigger “Ram” badges, LED lights with approach and departure sequences, up to 22-inch wheels.
The 2025 Ram 1500 should be in dealerships in the first quarter of 2025.
2025 Ram 1500 trim levels and prices:
- Tradesman: $40,275
- Big Horn/Lone Star: $44,935
- Rebel: $64,195
- Laramie: $60,030
- Limited Longhorn: $75,650
- Limited: $75,155
- Tungsten: $87,155
Source: Ram. Prices exclude $1,995 destination charge.
1. So long, Hemi, hello inline 6
After more than 20 years as a mainstay of Dodge and Ram pickups, the 5.7L naturally aspirated Hemi V8 engine is missing from the 2025 Ram 1500.
A new family of inline six-cylinder engines replaces it with more power, and presumably better fuel economy, when official figures are available. The new engines displace 3.0L and are called Hurricane. They debuted in the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer and get their name from an engine family Jeep built, a callback to an engine Willys developed for military Jeeps in the 1950s.
Inline engines are renowned for power and smooth, vibration-free running. That’s made them popular with brands like BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes for decades.
The new Hurricane features twin turbochargers — small, so they spin up fast to provide quick response when you floor the accelerator. The standard-output version’s intake air gets 22 pounds of boost from its turbos to produce 420 horsepower and 469 pound-feet of torque. That’s more than the 2023 Ram 1500’s 5.7L Hemi produced — 395 hp and 410 pound-feet, if you’re scoring at home. Or if you’re alone.
As if that weren’t enough power from a mere 3 liters of displacement — smaller than a six-pack of 16.9-ounce Coke bottles — the high output has 28 pounds of boost and generates 540 hp and 521 pound-feet of torque.
Premium gasoline is recommended for the standard output engine, required for the high output.
The Ram 1500’s base engine remains the 3.6L Pentastar mild hybrid V6. It generates 305 hp and 271 pound-feet of torque.
All three engines are mated to Stellantis’s stalwart eight-speed automatic, which shifted quickly on the road and performed well off road in my day at the wheel.
I spent my day in a loaded Limited model with the high-output engine and air suspension. It stickered at $87,845, excluding a $1,995 destination charge.
That may seem like an unfathomable price for a pickup, but it’s in line with previous Rams and the competition.
Ram 1500 competitors:
- Chevrolet Silverado
- Nissan Titan
- Toyota Tundra
2. Hands-free driving makes its debut on Ram 1500
Stellantis’ first hands-free driving system debuts on the Ram 1500. Modestly called “hands-free driving assist” — GM and Ford named their hands-free system’s Super Cruise and Blue Cruise, respectively — the feature worked very well in a brief test on a divided highway. The lane centering feature was confident and subtle, rounding curves with none of the nervous little corrections that marked some other first tries at hands-free driving.
Acceleration and braking are also unremarkable — which is exactly what you want from a hands-free driving system: no drama.
The system works on limited access roads. It’s included in the three-year connectivity package on vehicle’s with all the necessary hardware. Fees to retain the service after that haven’t been revealed.
The system doesn’t offer hands-free lane changes and passing yet, but expect those features in over the air updates.
Features on new Ram 1500 Tungsten:
- Indigo/Sea Salt interior color scheme
- Suede headliner, A- and B-pillars and sun visors
- Klipsch 23-speaker audio with 1,228 watts
- 24-way power, massaging seats
3. Passenger-only touch screen
A 10.25 touch screen in front of the front passenger seat is invisible to the driver, but allows the passenger to use apps and music from their devices, suggest changes to navigation destinations and view the truck’s exterior cameras. It’s a handy device making its pickup debut in the Ram.
The Ram’s other controls include a 12- or 14.5-inch touch screen, depending on the model. There are physical dials and buttons for most audio and climate controls. That’s a welcome departure from many vehicles, though some of the buttons are on the small size for use in a moving vehicle, especially if you’re wearing work gloves.
Some frequently used features, including heated and ventilated seats and heated steering wheel, don’t rate buttons, meaning you have to dip into the touch screen’s sub menus to activate them.
Safety and driver assist features
- Hands-free highway driving
- Adaptive cruise control
- Automatic high beams
- Turning cross-traffic alert and braking
- Blind spot alert
- Rear cross traffic alert
- Emergency steering assist
- Automatic parking
- Parking sensors
- Traffic sign recognition
- Head-up display
- Lane departure alert and assist
- Drowsy driver detection
Driving impressions
Engineers tuned the pickup’s suspension and steering for more refinement. The steering is quick and responsive.
Multiple available camera views come in handy when parking and off-roading, particularly since the hood’s power dome can make it hard to be sure where the pickup’s front corners are.
Maximum towing capacity is 11,580 pounds, payload 2,300.
In addition to hours on a variety of roads in top of the line models, I took the off-road oriented Rebel trim level on a challenging off-road course. We forded flooded arroyos and navigated mud from recent storms. The locking differentials, low range of gears and electronic engine and traction controls conquered steep inclines up and down and loose sand and gravel.
The Ram is quiet and comfortable on highways and surface roads. Between the new engines and safety and driving assistance features, it was easy and comfortable for driver and passenger.
Key features, 2025 Ram 1500
- Twin-turbo I-6 engine
- 14.5-inch touch screen
- 10.25 front passenger touch screen
- Power tailgate
- Laser-etched trim
- Phone as key
- Dual wireless chargers
- Color head-up display
Why get a Ram 1500?
The 2025 Ram 1500 is a capable and attractive truck. Top models look luxurious inside and out, thanks to LED walk-up lighting and good interior materials. The Hurricane engines should match the old 5.7L Hemi’s performance with better fuel economy. In time, they may also match its macho appeal.
It’s a shame Ram’s fuel-saving eTorque mild hybrid system is only available with the base 3.6L V6 though.

Pixel 9 Pro XL specs leak teases amazing on-device Gemini AI features
If you buy through a BGR link, we may earn an affiliate commission, helping support our expert product labs.
Google is widely expected to release four Pixel 9 phones this fall. The list includes the next-gen Pixel Fold, which might be called Pixel 9 Pro Fold, according to a new leak. Then, we’ll get the Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Now, we have a Pixel 9 leak that offers a few specs for two of the four 2024 Google phones. Such leaks are common in the world of Pixel devices. Google can’t keep any secrets about its devices or chooses not to. But this Pixel 9 Pro XL specs leak is quite telling, as it teases a big upgrade that teases on-device Gemini AI features coming to Google’s next-gen handsets.
Blog MySmartPrice first uncovered Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Geekbench 6.3.0 benchmarks. As you can see below, these early scores are well below what the iPhone 15 Pro/Max can offer. But we’re looking at early tests featuring non-final software. And that’s assuming they’re real, to begin with.

What’s more interesting than the benchmark scores are the specs they mention. The Pixel 9 Pro XL test shows the handset will feature Google’s Tensor G4 chip and 16GB of RAM. The Pixel 9 test lists the same chip but paired with 8GB of RAM.
I said earlier this week that, as a longtime iPhone user, I’m willing to wait for Apple to give me the Siri AI experience I want on the iPhone . That’s a personal AI assistant that’s aware of context. By that, I mean the data stored on my phone and what’s displayed on the screen. Siri will then be able to take commands for taking action in apps or controlling the iPhone.
A key aspect of Apple Intelligence is privacy via on-device processing and a brand new type of cloud-based processing. The former is probably the reason why Apple Intelligence won’t run on iPhone 15 and older devices that will support iOS 18 . Again, it’s about the RAM.
After all, we all knew Apple’s AI strategy would hinge on strong privacy features. Google probably predicted it, too. Moreover, Google will also want to outdo Apple’s AI with its massive Gemini model.
On the same note, the Pixel 9’s 8GB of RAM might be bad news for on-device AI. But remember that Google talked about its Gemini Nano and Gemini 1.5 Flash models on stage at I/O 2024. These will let Google bring some of the advanced Gemini features to devices like the Pixel 9 complete with on-device processing. I am speculating here, however.

10 Worst Fantasy Movies Of The 2010s
10 movie characters who looked totally different in the sequel, inside out 2's 10 best & funniest quotes.
- The A-Frame delves into a scientist's pursuit of scientific innovation, blurring the lines between ethics and hastened advancement.
- Despite genre-blending mishaps, the film offers thought-provoking commentary on the importance of ethical medical procedures and innovation.
- Johnny Whitworth delivers a compelling performance in a tale that balances entertainment with an exploration of false hope and ethical dilemmas.
The mad scientist trope has been thoroughly explored throughout film history. Typically, the story involves the pursuit of scientific innovation that leads to bizarre side effects that render the experiments dangerous. But what would happen if a groundbreaking achievement were discovered inadvertently? Should the inventor further explore the protocols or rush to test human subjects? In Calvin Lee Reeder’s creative sci-fi horror thriller, The A-Frame , ethics and hastened innovation are in battle for the search for life-saving discoveries. An intriguing blend of genres and themes, The A-Frame fulfills its promise to excite and entertain even with its mishaps.
The A-Frame (2024)
The a-frame introduces intriguing conversations about scientific innovation & ethics.
In one of the opening sequences of the film, we meet Donna (Dana Namerode), a seemingly anxious young woman who plays piano in her friends' band. Lying on a massage table, Donna receives Reiki therapy. She’s willing to try any nontraditional method to avoid losing her right hand to amputation after being diagnosed with cancer. While she awaits an appointment at her physician’s office, she meets Sam (Johnny Whitworth), a man who promises her a positive outcome from an unorthodox alternative to the doctor’s orders.
Sam is a quantum physicist desperate to uncover the truths about a subatomic universe. While attempting to open portals to this other world and improve the machine’s efficiency, he accidentally discovers a radical cure for cancer. Ready to legitimize his work and make it a staple in both fields, Sam hacks into hospitals to examine the records of patients. He is in desperate need of a participant who is willing to serve as the first patient in his human trials — ethical codes and proper investigative work be damned.
An intriguing blend of genres and themes, The A-Frame fulfills its promise to excite and entertain even with its mishaps.
Reeder’s latest feature brings up interesting and thought-provoking conversations about ethics and scientific advancement. Conceptually, the narrative is one that is easy to find interesting, especially considering the “post-pandemic” world we live in today. Whitworth’s Sam seems to be interested in making a mark in the quantum physics world and medical progress. But when things go awry, he takes on that mad scientist persona and shifts his priorities away from ethical procedures to achieving his goals, no matter how many people he has to hurt in the process.
The A-Frame's Genre-Blending Isn't Always Effective
But the film is thoroughly entertaining regardless.
The script effectively examines Sam’s gradual descent to madness in a way that offers laugh-out-loud moments. There are times when a more serious tone takes priority, like when Donna attends her cancer support group sessions and when other patients begin to accept their fates. However, the film occasionally suffers from tonal whiplash as a result of blending genres and implementing humor where it doesn’t always fit. Perhaps it’s a way for Reeder to materialize the inherent kookiness that comes from a script of this nature. Whatever the intent, it doesn’t always work, though there’s no denying the film's entertainment value.
One thing that would have strengthened The A-Frame further is a full embrace of more horror film elements. Avoiding these to implement mystery and even humor often leads to the diminishing quality of the watching experience. Framed as a Cronenberg-like film only hurts The A-Frame in the long run, especially since the film's body-horror elements are few and far between. We never gain insight into Sam’s psyche — we're supposed to just accept that he’s a mad scientist with no further background information.
Despite not having a full character study of Donna or Sam, the cast delivers strong enough performances to maintain the level of entertainment needed to keep us engaged. Whitworth, in particular, teeters on a thin line between charming and creepy in such an effective way that it leaves you with a level of uncertainty and discomfort. These competing feelings are enough to keep you on the edge of your seat while also providing a sense of hope that things will work out in the end. Namerode’s more reserved performance is a nice addition to balance the wonky storyline that develops.
An intriguing tale of ethics, scientific discovery, and false hope, Reeder’s The A-Frame is a nice journey through the mind of a mad scientist. The creative concept implements some thought-provoking commentary about the importance of using ethical procedures to advance medical innovation. While the film doesn’t properly balance its genre-blending and tones, Whitworth and Namerode carry the script through their performances and intense chemistry. It may play its cards too safely, but The A-Frame delivers the entertainment exactly when it needs to.
The A-Frame premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival .
- Johnny Whitworth gives a creepy, scene-stealing performance
- The script is thought-provoking in how it examines ethics and scientific innovation
- The genre-blending and tonal shifts aren't always effective
- The script plays it safe with the horror elements
- tribeca film festival
