As a management student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing management theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.
The management field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like operations management , business , business administration , MBA , human resource management and more. That is why creating a management dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.
We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, there is a possibility that the study is not viable.
This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.
Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.
Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.
Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample management dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Dissertation & Thesis Outline | Example & Free Templates
Published on June 7, 2022 by Tegan George . Revised on November 21, 2023.
A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical early steps in your writing process . It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding the specifics of your dissertation topic and showcasing its relevance to your field.
Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:
- Your anticipated title
- Your abstract
- Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review, research methods, avenues for future research, etc.)
In the final product, you can also provide a chapter outline for your readers. This is a short paragraph at the end of your introduction to inform readers about the organizational structure of your thesis or dissertation. This chapter outline is also known as a reading guide or summary outline.
Table of contents
How to outline your thesis or dissertation, dissertation and thesis outline templates, chapter outline example, sample sentences for your chapter outline, sample verbs for variation in your chapter outline, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about thesis and dissertation outlines.
While there are some inter-institutional differences, many outlines proceed in a fairly similar fashion.
- Working Title
- “Elevator pitch” of your work (often written last).
- Introduce your area of study, sharing details about your research question, problem statement , and hypotheses . Situate your research within an existing paradigm or conceptual or theoretical framework .
- Subdivide as you see fit into main topics and sub-topics.
- Describe your research methods (e.g., your scope , population , and data collection ).
- Present your research findings and share about your data analysis methods.
- Answer the research question in a concise way.
- Interpret your findings, discuss potential limitations of your own research and speculate about future implications or related opportunities.
For a more detailed overview of chapters and other elements, be sure to check out our article on the structure of a dissertation or download our template .
To help you get started, we’ve created a full thesis or dissertation template in Word or Google Docs format. It’s easy adapt it to your own requirements.

It can be easy to fall into a pattern of overusing the same words or sentence constructions, which can make your work monotonous and repetitive for your readers. Consider utilizing some of the alternative constructions presented below.
Example 1: Passive construction
The passive voice is a common choice for outlines and overviews because the context makes it clear who is carrying out the action (e.g., you are conducting the research ). However, overuse of the passive voice can make your text vague and imprecise.
Example 2: IS-AV construction
You can also present your information using the “IS-AV” (inanimate subject with an active verb ) construction.
A chapter is an inanimate object, so it is not capable of taking an action itself (e.g., presenting or discussing). However, the meaning of the sentence is still easily understandable, so the IS-AV construction can be a good way to add variety to your text.
Example 3: The “I” construction
Another option is to use the “I” construction, which is often recommended by style manuals (e.g., APA Style and Chicago style ). However, depending on your field of study, this construction is not always considered professional or academic. Ask your supervisor if you’re not sure.
Example 4: Mix-and-match
To truly make the most of these options, consider mixing and matching the passive voice , IS-AV construction , and “I” construction .This can help the flow of your argument and improve the readability of your text.
As you draft the chapter outline, you may also find yourself frequently repeating the same words, such as “discuss,” “present,” “prove,” or “show.” Consider branching out to add richness and nuance to your writing. Here are some examples of synonyms you can use.

When you mention different chapters within your text, it’s considered best to use Roman numerals for most citation styles. However, the most important thing here is to remain consistent whenever using numbers in your dissertation .

Qualitative Research Skills In The Marketing Research Process
Published 25 Jun 2024
Introduction
The marketing research process helps analyze the problems involved in developing a specific marketing campaign related to an organization's specific product. A number of steps are involved in the marketing research process, and differences exist in the management and research problem. Those steps and differences are identified here, along with the evaluation of qualitative techniques used for primary data collection.
Steps involved in the marketing research process
The processes involved in marketing research are identifying the problem, setting the research aims and objectives, determining the design of the research, planning the sample, collecting the required data, analyzing those data, and formulating conclusions from the analysis.
Identification of the problem: In order to initiate the market research process, the identification of the problem experienced by the organization needs to be defined. The problem statement should be taken into consideration so that it can find a way to deal with the problems and resolve it properly (FLEACĂ, et al. 2016).
Identifying research aims and objectives: In the next step, research objectives and aims need to be defined so that the extent of the research problem can be determined. The research aim can illustrate the significance of the problem statement.
Research Design Planning: After defining the objectives and the problems related to the marketing research process, the research design needs to be determined. As the needed information is to be collected and analyzed, the specific procedure should be developed, and Research Design can be a master plan for it (Benzo et al. 2017).
Sample planning: It can be found that in order to collect the proper and first-hand information, the population or number of samples is to be defined. The target population and the right representation of samples need to be taken into consideration.
Data Collection process: Data collection is needed to resolve the problem regarding marketing research. Both primary and secondary data can be considered in developing market research methods (Kennedy, 2017). Whereas human interaction can be used as the primary data source, secondary data sources are comprised of reports, articles, journals, and other Publications.
Data analysis: In order to generate the research, the collected data needs to be analysed so that the right outcome can be generated properly. The respondents' responses need to be categorized properly so that the data transfer to the data storage media can be developed properly. Moreover, the right analytical technique needs to be chosen so that the outcome will be right.
Conclusion formulation: This is the final stage of the marketing research process, where the information is interpreted and conclusions drawn to be used for managerial decision-making. In fact, the Research report will be developed based on this segment.
Differences of the management and research problem in the given context
Management and research problems are dependent on action-oriented problems where research problem involves the Collection of data, sampling, and the analysis of collected data. The management research problem can be identified as one of the problems which are experienced by the management of a specific organisation (Birks, 2016). On the other hand, the research problem can be developed on many aspects unrelated to the organization. In the given context, thus, the research problem would be different as it is related to the problems of marketing research and its problems
Application and evaluation of qualitative techniques for primary data collection
Primary Data collection is one of the most effective techniques that can be helpful in terms of making sure that real-time data related to a particular subject is incorporated in the research. In this case, the researcher needs to make sure that he or she asks the right questions to the right stakeholders who will be considered as the research participants. However, there are several techniques related to primary qualitative data collection, such as the following.
Individual Interview—Interviews are the most popular technique for qualitative research. In this case, researchers can acquire more detailed information from individuals who are directly related to a topic or situation (Horrocks, 2018). Creating a list of questions and making appointments with the participants are activities related to this technique.
Focus Groups—This technique allows research to obtain information that can be easily generalized. Statements from individuals are critically analyzed, as different people in the same location can provide contrasting information. The main activities are gathering a group of participants and creating a list of questions.
Observations—Observation can be regarded as the easiest way of collecting qualitative data. In this case, the researcher sees a certain situation or event just to understand the changes or developments that are visible to the naked eye (Choi, 2018). However, there are no guarantees that the researcher will understand specific changes in a detailed manner.
The success of any business organisation largely depends on how the company and its management are able to align themselves with changes in the internal and external environment. However, understanding the environment is very important, and in this case, different research questions can be very helpful in understanding the alignment of the different business environments. The report effectively provided the opportunity to learn about such techniques.

Are there certain actions or behaviors during the activity that you did particularly well or that you would wish to improve?
It can be said that I was very excited when I got the opportunity to execute this assignment, and therefore, I decided to put my best foot forward in the execution of this assignment. However, during the execution phase, I understood that I had issues with my time management skills. In this case, I faced some difficulties in managing my other personal commitments while being aligned with my academic commitments, and therefore, I think that there is some room for improvement in terms of time management, and I must make timetables in order to accommodate my different commitments. I will try to make sure that I can cut down on my commitments so that the important activities are on top of my list in terms of allocating time.
In what ways do you think you could improve your own practice in relation to gathering data, analysing information, and using intelligence?
I think that the most effective way to improve my research skills is by ensuring I can access all effective online sources. In my opinion, as technology develops, all the literature sources will be available online; therefore, to effectively execute secondary data collection, the online sources must be accessed. It can be said that the internet is also helpful in terms of primary data, which is quantitative in nature. There are several websites and platforms in the internet that can be used for online chat and this will be helpful in gathering information from participants who live far from the researcher.
However, in order to be effective in gathering data from these online techniques, one has to be aware of the websites and how they access them from different browsers. In this case, I will also look to improve my research skills and make sure that I am able to surf the internet and learn about different platforms related to data collection.

Specific features of the ecological functioning of urban soils in Moscow and Moscow region
Eurasian Soil Science
Urban soils (constructozems) were studied in Moscow and several cities (Dubna, Pushchino, and Serebryanye Prudy) of Moscow oblast. The soil sampling from the upper 10-cm-thick layer was performed in the industrial, residential, and recreational functional zones of these cities. The biological (the carbon of the microbial biomass carbon, Cmic and the microbial (basal) respiration, BR) and chemical (pHwater and the contents of Corg, heavy metals, and NPK) indices were determined in the samples. The ratios of BR to Cmic (the microbial respiration quotient, qCO2) and of Cmic to Corg were calculated. The Cmic varied from 120 to 738 μg C/g soil; the BR, from 0.39 to 1.94 μg CO2-C/g soil per hour; the Corg, from 2.52 to 5.67%; the qCO2, from 1.24 to 5.28 μg CO2-C/mg Cmic/g soil per h; and the Cmic/Corg, from 0.40 to 1.55%. Reliable positive correlations were found between the Cmic and BR, the Cmic and Cmic/Corg, and the Cmic and Corg values (r = 0.75, 0.95, and 0.61, respectively), as well...

Soils and plants of Saint Petersburg are under the constant technogenic stress caused by human activity in in-dustrial, residential, and recreational landscapes of the city. To assess the transformed landscapes of various functional zones, we studied utility, housing, and park districts with a total area of over 7,000 hectares in the southern part of the city during the summer seasons of 2016-2018. Throughout the fieldwork period, 796 individual pairs of soil and plant samples were collected. A complex of consequent laboratory studies performed in an accredited laboratory allowed the characterization of key biogeochemical patterns of urban regolith specimens and herbage samples of various grasses. Chemical analyses provided information on the concentrations of polluting metals in soils and plants of different land use zones. Data interpretation and calculation of element accumulation factors revealed areas with the most unfavorable environmental conditions. We believe that a high pollution level in southern city districts has led to a significant degree of physical, chemical, and biological degradation of the soil and vegetation cover. As of today, approximately 10 % of the Technosols in the study area have completely lost the ability to biological self-revitalization, which results in ecosystem malfunction and the urgent need for land remediation.

The main purpose of the present study was to monitor actual contamination levels and execute a comparative assessment of results in a mid-sized Hungarian city for two different years. The first citywide soil investigations were completed in 2011. In 2018, the most prominent properties (pH, CaCO3, texture, and trace metals Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were reanalyzed and were supplemented with mesofauna on selected sites. The available trace metal elements of urban soils showed the following tendency in 2011: Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd > Cr = Ni = Co. In 2018, the previous order changed to Zn > Pb > Cu > Cr > Cd = Ni = Co. Cd and Pb enrichments were found, especially near the M7 motorway. The comparison between 2011 and 2018 revealed soil contamination was, on average, higher in 2011. Soil microarthropod communities were sampled and assessed using abundance data and diversity measurements. Soil biological quality was evaluated with the help of the Soil Biological Qualit...

A soil diagnosis of an urban territory Stepnoe (Saratov region) was conducted within the framework of soil research monitoring of inhabited localities with low levels of anthropogenic impact using chemical and microbiological analysis. Excess over maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of mobile forms of Cr, Zn and Cd were not observed within the researched territory. A universal excess over MPC of mobile forms of Ni, Cu and Pb was established which is most likely connected with anthropogenic contamination. It was discovered that, at the territory of the Stepnoe settlement, mobile forms of heavy metals compounds (HM) in most cases formed paragenetic associations with high correlation coefficient and despite this, an excess over MPC was not significant. This point to a common mineralogical origin of the elements inherited from the parent rock. The values of the total index of chemical contamination were not above 16, which puts the researched samples in a category with permissible contamination. The indices of the total number of heterotrophic bacteria, iron-oxidizing and hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria in most samples corresponded to normal indices for chestnut solonetsous and saline soils. In some samples, a deviation from the normal indices was observed justifying the impact of specific contaminants on the soil.

The objective of the study was to determine properties of soils located within a city, and to assess the effect of anthropopressure on the accumulation of carbon and nitrogen in soils of Pruszków . a medium sized town in central Poland. Surface soil layers (0.20 cm) were collected at 36 sites. A total of 12 samples from lawns, 11 from allotment gardens, 9 from fields and 4 from fallow lands were subject to analysis. Lawns and allotment gardens were treated as central zone I . under strong pressure of anthropogenic factors, fields and fallow lands were treated as zone II . with potentially low level of anthropogenic influence. The statistical analysis showed significantly higher (p=0.008) amount of organic carbon (Corg) in lawns (mean 20.5 g·kg
For the first time, the quantitative geochemical data are given for urban soils of several groups of cities which differ in population. The content of chemical elements is considered as well as the specific ecological significance of soil contamination by these elements. The figures were established by authors on the base of average concentrations of chemical elements in the soils of more than 300 cities and settlements. The major part of data (sampling, analyses, and their statistical treatment) was obtained directly by authors as a result of special studies conducted for more than 15 years. The sufficiently numerous published materials of different researchers were also used. The greatest elements accumulation comparing with the Earth’s soils (tens of thousands of tons per 1 km2) is associated with an increase in the content of Ca and Mg. Considering the environmental significance of chemical elements accumulation in soils, we note the primary role of Pb and Zn in all groups of cities. Out from the rest pollutants it is necessary, first of all, to note As, Cu, and Cl, which are the main contaminants in four of six cities groups. In two groups of settlements, Cd and Co are important soil pollutants. In three groups, a considerable increase in the Ca content significantly modifies ecological–geochemical state of soils.

Suburbanization Problems
in the USSR :
the Case of Moscow
Suburbanization processes typical to cities in Western Europe, the USA and other countries are not observed in the USSR or they are distorted to such an extent that they may not be compared with existing standards. This states the question how Soviet cities-succeeded in escaping this stage of urban development. In order to answer this question, we should first summarize the main aspects of Western suburbanization.
Firstly, it is well known that the urbanization processes are linked to structural changes in the economy. Thus the transition from the stage of concentration to this of suburbanization is associated with industrialization, and the transition to the third stage - déconcentration - is related with the rapid growth of employment in the non-industrial sphere. Secondly, a suburbanization of economic activities can be distinguished. It applies in the first place to the building and iron- working industry, transports, engineering and chemical works. These are polluting and requiring extensive areas. This suburbanization of industry is caused by the following factors: rising demand for land from firms ; worsening of transport
tions in the inner cities ; demand for lower land costs and taxation levels in suburbs ; rapid growth of road transports; state policies regulating the growth of large cities ; migration of the labour force to the suburban zones. Scientific and educational activities are also transferred from the centre to the suburbs.
The third important aspect of suburbanization applies to the population. In the suburbs two opposite flows of population meet ; one is centripetal, coming from non- metropolitan regions, the other is centrifugal, coming from the central city. The reasons for the migration to the suburbs are as follows : declining living standards in large cities (overcrowding, slow housing renewal, environmental problems, etc.); growth of motorization of the population, development of communications (telephone, telex, fax, computer) ; intensifying decentralization of working places ; lower land prices in the suburbs ; state support for the intensification of real estate development in the suburbs. The above-mentioned factors and reasons for suburbanization are altered in the Soviet cities. Let us explore them, by taking for example the largest one - Moscow.

The Moscow oblast is the most highly developed and most populated region in Russia. The social and economic causes of Moscow's extensive growth reveal that its problems are a reflection of the ones facing the USSR. The concentration of economic, social and management functions in Mos-. cow in Soviet times materializes the strong centralism of the particraty and weighs down on the city's development.
